Hi! I am beyond uncomfortable asking for money from other people, but my partner and I really need help to save our chicken, Barbara.
Barb needs surgery to fix a shattered tibiotarsus (the bone between her femur and her lower leg). After three attempts at splinting her leg, the vet told me on Friday that surgery is really her only option other than humane euthanasia, and I really don't want to do that because she is perfectly happy and healthy aside from her broken leg. It just doesn't feel fair to not at least try to raise the funds we need for this.
I know that to some people, Barbara would be "just a chicken," but that's not the case to my partner and me. Our animals at the Funny Farm—that's what we named our home—are everything to us. If Barbara were a cat or dog, we would pursue every option possible to help her have the best quality of life; her being a chicken is no different.
Here's a link to the fundraiser.
If you don't want to give to the GoFundMe, I have Venmo and Cashapp (both w/ the username beckylongstocking). I'm also working to create stickers and t-shirts and other items to support Barbara, if you'd like to contribute and receive something physical in return. I'll post updates on my lil artstagram, @rebekahmakesart.
If you can't contribute financially, please consider reblogging this post. We only have a few weeks to raise money before our next appointment, which is when we'll be making the ultimate decision on how we can move forward.
Thank you. I love you.

I just remembered I have free will and can post whatever I want, so here are the misfits as chicken breeds, half based on my personal experiences, and half just on the vibes. (Perhaps I'll do the acolytes and staff later heheh)
Lenore
Plymouth Rock
Morella
Buff Frizzle (bantam breed)
Duke
Silver Laced Polish
Pluto
Black Old English Game Bantam
Berenice
Golden Sebright (Bantam breed)
Eulalie
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte
*(Note: bantam breeds, whether true bantams or bantam versions of regular breeds, are pretty much mini chickens. They're like... Half the size of regular chickens lmao. This includes their eggs, making their eggs perfect for halfing recipes!)

I want chickens someday (someday 🥲) and I’d love one a these lacy lads. This one’s a black lace golden wyandotte!
[ID: an illustration of a colorful rooster standing, facing to the right. He is on a green background with red flowers. His feathers are mostly red and gold, with black lacy markings on his chest and iridescent green tail feathers. End.]

I'm bored and hyperfixating on chickens again so heres most of the nuwho characters as chicken breeds
I'll be basing my choices on both aesthetics and personality but some may be more of one than the other lol
13 is a buff bramha. They're super sweet and affectionate but they can also kick your ass if they want to.
12 is a faverolle. Faverolle roosters are very gentle and mellow but not necessarily super cuddly. Also they're just so fluffy, how could I not pick them for 12
11 is a serama. Seramas are chatty, friendly, good with kids, and are full of personality.
Yaz is an australorp. This is a personal favorite breed of mine since my favorite bird I ever kept was an australorp. They're very curious, outgoing, and friendly but they also have a self assured spirit which keeps them pretty high in any pecking order.
Clara is a Rhode island red. They're pretty bossy and confident but under the right circumstances they can still be loveable and fiercely loyal birds.
River is a modern game. They're known as one of the top fighting breeds in the world and it SHOWS. One look at the legs on this bird will tell you not to mess with it.
Missy is a golden laced wyandotte. Being one of the bossiest breeds I've met, they're certainly a force to be reckoned with. They will fiercely defend their place in the pecking order and make damn sure their underlings know their place.
Dhawan!master is an american game fowl. Yet another famous fighting breed, they're incredibly close to what the chicken's wild ancestors wouldve been like. The roosters plumage is dazzlingly colorful and they will not hesitate to defend their own with beak and claw.
Kate is a Plymouth rock. They're vigilant and brave, with a keen eye for predators and a stoic demeanor.
Osgood is an amerucana. They're known for being very calm, affectionate, and quiet. Some can be quite curious too.
I would add more but I've reached the limit on pics I can add to a post sadly. I might add more later tho lol

Also, the chicken mystery continues. I’ve even turned to Reddit for help. So far there is perfect consensus that a rooster is bothering Crash the golden Wyandotte hen and zero consensus on which of the chickens is the secret rooster.
I’m seriously considering spending one evening on the farm this week so I can check the chickens when they’re asleep and can’t run away. That or I’ll steal my dad’s GoPro and set it up in the coop.
I will find out why my favorite hen has had her back feathers torn out.
#fury's life#fury’s a farm kid#some of these chickens are unquestionably hens#but some could conceivably be a late-puberty rooster#and some of them are too fast for me to catch to check

Easter bunnies (aka chabbits, skvaders, or boultry) are GMO designer pets turned practical livestock from Runaway to the Stars. Each breed has a distinct egg color! They are popular choice for small spacer colonies, since they’re quiet and produce eggs and meat on a completely vegetarian diet.

How Do You Choose The Right Chicken Breeds for Seniors? In the end, choosing the right chickens for seniors isn’t just about fresh eggs—it’s about creating a delightful experience filled with joy, companionship, and the soothing clucks of contentment in your backyard. Imagine the pleasure of waking up to the gentle clucking of your feathered friends, ready to start your day on a cheerful note. But how do you ensure that your new chicken companions are easy to handle and fit seamlessly into your life? Let’s dive in. First things first—personality matters. Yes, chickens have distinct personalities just like we do. If you’re seeking a peaceful environment, consider breeds like the gentle Buff Orpington or the sociable Wyandotte. These laid-back ladies will bring a sense of calm to your coop and won’t stir up any unnecessary feathers. On the other hand, assertive breeds like the Rhode Island Reds might bring a bit too much sass for a serene setting. It’s essential to choose feathered companions that align with your lifestyle and temperament for a harmonious flock. Now, let’s talk space. Not everyone has acres of land for their backyard chickens, and that’s perfectly fine! Compact breeds like Bantams thrive in smaller areas while still providing ample entertainment and companionship. Don’t let limited yard space deter you from the joys of chicken-keeping. With the right breeds, you can create a cozy chicken haven right in your own backyard. Health and mobility considerations are also vital. If bending down to care for your chickens is a concern, consider automating your feeding routine and investing in accessible coop designs. Making sure that caring for your feathered friends is physically manageable will make the experience much more enjoyable and stress-free. By incorporating smart tools and ergonomic design, you can ensure that both you and your chickens thrive. And let’s not forget the sheer delight that chickens can bring. Their quirky behaviors and unique personalities can brighten even the dullest of days. Whether you’re seeking the perfect egg-layers, charming companions, or a bit of both, the right breeds can enrich your golden years and bring a sense of purpose and joy to your daily routine. In conclusion, taking the time to research and connect with local farmers will help you choose the ideal chickens for your senior years. With a thoughtful approach to selecting breeds that match your preferences and lifestyle, you’ll create a harmonious flock that not only provides fresh eggs but also fills your days with laughter and companionship. So, embrace the clucks, enjoy the feathers, and revel in the joy that backyard chickens can bring—one cluck at a time. https://backyardchickennews.com/how-do-you-choose-the-right-chicken-breeds-for-seniors/?feed_id=8044&_unique_id=675ad0bc84a13

This is a super cool addition, but to be completely honest a lot of this is not super accurate! Chicken breed history is super interesting but just because something is heritage does not mean it is period appropriate. That also depends a lot on where the time is set!
-Cochins and Brahmas are considered asiatic breeds, but they’re actually British breeds bred from Chinese birds. They are an amalgamation of many different round Chinese chickens. These breeds were favorites of Queen Victoria’s and didn’t arrive until her reign. Orpingtons and other larger “dual-purpose” heritage breeds were derived from Chinese birds. The American dual-purpose heritage breeds were derived from them. During the Victorian era and before, the average person would not have these fat round chickens. They would have smaller, gamier looking birds, as most European breeds are. Brahmas and Cochins have only gotten as big as they are in recent years.
Common European and Mediterranean chicken breeds generally would have had had skinnier bodies, like this golden Campine. Again, a lot of the color pattern and designation into separate breeds is more recent. It wasn’t until the Victorian era that Campiness were considered a separate breed from the Braekel. Most people would not have specific breeds like this, he is just representative of general body shape from the time. Photo is from the Livestock Conservancy. The Minorcas mentioned are also a good example. :)
- Wyandottes and Plymouth Rocks (proper breed name, barred is just a color. Whites are common in showing) are both American breeds that occurred after colonization. It’s important to think about location and time. These birds would not have been in Victorian England. Also- that blue laced red color of Wyandotte is a recent addition to the breed and is not even APA recognized yet.
-Egyptian Fayoumis are super cool and super old. Just keep them in Egypt.
-I’m not super familiar with the native history of Cemanis. They’re cool but prone to cancer due to excess melanin. Again, unless you are writing a very specific type of story, you wouldn’t see them running around a farmyard.
-It should be noted that chickens were domesticated for cockfighting. It was an extremely common sport for both working class people and British nobility. Period accurate works should include cockfighting birds more. Not condoning blood sports, but they are an important part of chicken history.
Sorry I just really really really like chickens.
This is.....niche. Do period-appropriate chickens even still exist? Idk anything about chickens. I like the fancy ones.

been having a lot of bird dreams recently. Night before yesterday I dreamed we took in a batch of baby ducks that sort of turned into baby chickens
then last night I dreamed I was taking a walk through the neighborhood and saw an abandoned flock of rhode island reds, a gorgeous golden wyandott, and a cluster of speckled white hens like the ones I have now. I think my subconscious is making up for the lack of new birds this year.
