charlie was born and raised in waco back when it was just baylor and branch davidians so color him bemused by fixer upper. his parents, bill and rosie, are both retired teachers and are the kind of people still very much in love after almost fifty years together.

charlie loves the idea of love. he was raised in a house with a lot of love and sure, he believes in it. he just hates it in execution at present.

charlie's upbringing was chill and pretty idyllic. he rode bikes and ran track, bossed around his little sister jessie, and graduate from high school as valedictorian and with a full ride to baylor. he lived in the dorms but went home for dinner half the week for his first semester but he was absolutely not homesick at all.

he started out studying history with every intention of being a teacher like his parents and doesn't have any profound explanation for why he decided on law school instead - he was twenty two, the lsat was there, he got into ut, and he decided it was better to spend three years in law school than accept the teach for america gig.

law school and austin were exactly right for charlie and he would have been happy to spend the rest of his life there. he met some of his best friends, including clint marshall, who is a walking, talking texas stereotype and charlie's ride or die.

he also met rebecca but boy is he never in the mood to talk about that.

okay fine: he knew rebecca while she was in undergrad through a deeply incestuous friend network, they met again after she had graduated and when he was an associate at his first firm, it seemed like they wanted the same things and hit it off perfectly. cut to three years later and they were living in a flipped bungalow in barton hills with a cat and again: it seemed like everything was fine! he'd proposed! she said yes! they had reserved a venue! she had driven through silobration traffic in waco with him! he felt perfectly fine going on a two month trip to argentina to work on a contract!

he really can't tell you now if he regrets that decision or not but either way: he came back and got dumped for the ex rebecca always told him to not worry about.

he's fine!!!

bachelor living did not suit him at all - he tried. lord did he try. he gave it three months of being single and getting his shit organized and then let his sister and sister and law try sending him out on dates but, as lucy so gently put it, he was a little too bitter still.

so he decided to flee. not to waco, as suggested by his parents (and shot down by his sister) but to san francisco. he signed up with a recruiter who got him in with another firm specializing in contract law. he mostly works with tech bros who are all designing the next facebook and if it works out for them, cool! either way charlie gets paid so he doesn't care.

he likes san francisco. he didn't think he would - it was just the furthest he could go rather than his number one choice. apartment hunting is going to kill him and he's still not sure how the hell he wound up with cat custody but...it might all work out.

D A Y 2 || today i’m happy because a very sweet kid gave me a flower anonymously. thank you, whoever you may be, for your genuine heart & kind soul. plus it’s pink! i’m also happy to have a best friend like emma who hates mornings but consistently wakes up early to see me because i love mornings, plans surprises for me every time we hang out, & swarms our workplace hours before our shift when thousands of people are there just to find the best darn mini chocolate glazed donuts we could ever eat! also sort of kind of happy silobration is over & now i can peacefully sleep in my bed

This is us not being able to go to the Fall Silobrations festival @magnolia @visitmagnolia because there is no parking for handicap there’s no parking for disabled. We asked a police officer -actually 2 police officers …(1 Sheriff & 1 Waco police officer)where we could park? and they said “you have to walk everywhere and the closest place is two blocks away”. This is ridiculous and I believe it’s illegal that there’s no accommodations for disabled people like myself who cannot walk 2 blocks! I’m really sad because we just moved to Waco and this is upsetting! Anybody know who I need to write, email or call? There are still two days left or more of the salad celebrations and we can’t even go back because it’s going to be the same thing. Anybody have any ideas how to help us? 6 month log: you are loved.

Every 6 months I’m going to try to share my most memorable moments. Good or bad.

These past six months were the most intense mixture of good and bad that I’ve ever experienced. I had some struggles within myself. I became a mother. I’ve made memories with my husband. No matter what struggles we dealt with, I can never say the past six months were bad, because there’s too much good mixed in there.

August.

This was probably the bottom of the pit for me, concerning postpartum depression. I cried from morning to night. I could barely even be there for my baby because I had no motivation to do anything. I felt disconnected from him. My mind told me so many lies about the value of myself and my place in this world. It was hard and my memory of those days are dark. It’s just not what you want to feel when you look back on the “newborn days”. Oh, and the cherry on top was my week-long hospital stay due to a very stubborn infection in my breast. Breastfeeding was not my friend and I do not miss those days.

Anyways, thankfully my husband got me help and once we found the right medicine, my battle with the depression was an uphill journey. Slow... hard...but uphill. I’m working on making my own mind a more positive place and my doctor thinks in 6 more months, I can hopefully be weaned off of the medicine. 🤞🏼 I think a big part of it–besides, you know, brain chemicals?–is just believing in myself. I feel really confident that I can be me again. An even better version, at that.

I have a lot more to say about this and one day, maybe, I’ll take a deep breath and type it all out. But for now I think I’ll leave it at that. I will say, I’m very grateful to have had plenty of support from so many people, especially Alex.

Sister Trips.

Last spring, my sisters and I made a trip to New Orleans and it was so much fun, we decided we had to make regular “sister trips”. In the last 6 months we’ve made 2 trips to Houston and of course I loved every minute of it. My sisters are the best company.

In October, our SIL Tavyn joined us and we tried ramen at Ramen Tatsu-Ya. We had the best chocolate chip cookies at Tiny’s No. 5 and basically just shopped the rest of the day.

The 2nd trip was to shop post-Christmas sales at the galleria and my SIL Ali was able to come that time. It was also Noah’s 1st trip to Houston :’)

If you have a sister(s), take a trip together. I don’t know where we’re going next, but wherever it is I’m already looking forward to it!

Friend Trips.

I made a last minute day-trip to Magnolia’s Silobration with my friend Mary and I’m so glad we went. Magnolia is always a good idea and it was fun to spend time together apart from our husbands (nothing against our husbands lol).

And our group trip to Toledo bend was so much fun. We played monopoly and Jackbox games at night and went to Natchitoches during the day. Even our meals together–from burgers at a gas station cafe to a firework show and cocktails at Maglieaux’s–are great memories for me. I guess it’s true that food really does bring people together lol.

Outdoors

I made a little promise to myself to get outside more and I’d say we’ve done pretty well. We’ve made great memories walking local trails and we’re making plans to branch out a bit into Texas and also see more of Louisiana. We’re planning a canoe trip with friends but it’s so hard lining up everyone’s schedules.

One of my favorite days was our quick trip to the gulf to fly a kite. We brought the kids and even though it was a little cold for them, Noah loved playing in the sand and Jackson had a blast running from waves with me on the shoreline.

A big lesson I’ve learned these last 6 months is that people never seem to know how loved they are. I think it’s a good practice to stop and consider yourself through the eyes of people around you and remember that yes, you are loved. Even if you feel like a burden, there is someone in this world who is just grateful you’re here.

My grandfather is at a difficult time in life. So naturally ...he can kind of be a downer if he’s just in that mood. Once or twice he’s commented that he feels in the way, or burdensome, and it breaks my heart. Doesn’t he know we want to care for him? Honestly: so what if it is an inconvenience? We’re just happy he’s here. It makes it all worth it.

For a while, I felt like a burden on the people around me. Like, great, they’re already dealing with a lot and now they have to deal with me. I felt in the way. I made things harder on people, right? Right. That part is actually true. But what I learned is that it’s okay. They want to help me. All their help was powered by love, and I completely missed that. Instead, i listened to the lie in my head that it was powered by obligation. And there’s my lesson: people never know how loved they are.

So I think we need to make it clear. Let people know you’re grateful you get to care for them. You love that they’re here. It could save someone’s spirit.

They were my best seller that season. 😂 The sign on the building was what @chipgaines surprised me with when we found out we couldn't afford a real sign. He always saves the day. This was also the year that the phrase "Live Laugh & Love" was at its peak in popularity. And my biggest regret was selling that large antique counter in photo #3. I still think about that thing. I have zero regrets though about stepping out and just going for it- this shop, this business, it has our hearts. We are so thankful and this is why we SILOBRATE!
