Despite being one of the few characters in Hazbin with confirmed identities (his ethnic background and sexual orientation), those identities are in of themselves, complex experiences.
There’s seemingly nothing about the character that is Black or White.
I think that’s why he is such a compelling character! Also, it’s probably one reason why he is such an attractive conduit for folks’ creative expression.
His identities are not necessarily why many people may gravitate towards him, but they do offer a chance for people to investigate him and explore a character—as unique as he is—into avenues they may not have considered before.
I can commiserate with feeling defensive of a character who shares an identity with you—ESPECIALLY an underrepresented one. Discourse is natural and completely fine! (And very educational sometimes in my experience)
But I don’t think it’s fruitful to police a fandom in these matters. Some folks come to my inbox (I delete the really rude ones) or comment sections with a very cop-like attitude to a space that’s supposed to be creative and/or fun *airhorn*
That’s my take as just some guy on the internet 🤓🛜 have a good dayyyyy
lin manuel miranda as hermes is incredible actually. i think it was valid some people were unsure about his casting at first, since he's such a recognizable (and heavily memed) celebrity, but that man can act. his delivery, the intensity behind his eyes... he was immersed and in character every single moment he was on screen. imo he was really great and believable as hermes, and i really enjoyed his performance
people not in the mcyt fandom cheering for mcyt to win the most annoying fandoms poll: a drm fan said something offensive on twitter so i hate all mcyt fans :(
mcyt fans cheering for mcyt to win the most annoying fandoms poll: we are approximately 300+ communities all forcibly shoved into one category. half of us hate each other and there is a rampant superiority issue between communities despite them all Literally just being people roleplaying in minecraft. not only are we split between creators, but different social media communities hate each other as well. a twitter mcyt fan and a tumblr mcyt fan are wildly different things and are at constant war with each other.
i like to imagine that paul suit discourse happens in-universe too. it's like one of those "blue and black or white and gold" things - every new CCRP employee is interrogated on what colour they think paul's suit is, and then unknowingly dragged into war based on their answer. if CCRP ever has company bonding paintball games, the teams are always split by what colour they think paul's suit is. one day, ted asks him directly, and when paul 'disagrees' (it's his suit and it's brown, god damn it. it says it right there on the label, see!) he insists the poor guy must be colourblind or some shit.
I say this in the kindest way possible, but I think this style of prose is more appropriate for a personal account rather than an update account. I have no idea who's being talked about half the time. 🥲
People on Instagram clutching their pearls a bit at the idea of shipping/drawing arkayne. It’s not my fault ok. It’s Harlan’s fault he made that freak call Artie ‘my love’ literally thirty seconds into meeting him. What other option do I have here.
“I watched Lisa Frankenstein and I don’t think it went deep enough into [serious real-world issue that’s related to the plot]” THAT IS NOT WHAT THE MOVIE WAS FOR.
Not every movie has to be a video essay about society or go incredibly deep into the characters/issues/etc. If they do, that’s cool, keep on trucking. Good to see it. We need more movies that dig deep, because there’s a lot of movies out there that suffer from not asking the hard questions.
But can you honestly tell me that you looked at the trailer for this movie and genuinely expected it to be some deep shit? That’s like watching the trailer for Rocky Horror and going ah yes. An astute film that tackles hard-hitting topics and makes me think about the human psyche.
Like. Girl. Can we please just let the camp ass movie be a camp ass movie. Sometimes a movie is just here to have fun with it. If you want to dig deeper on your own, go ahead and do it! I like to do that myself, and I think it’s fun to sort through the different layers of a piece of media. But don’t rag on the 80s pastiche, Tim Burton/John Hughes lovechild, horror rom-com for not tackling deeply nuanced societal issues. It wasn’t intended for that.
really hoping that the DA fandom doesn’t seem intimidating to anyone new - joining or being on the fringes of a huge and well-established community can be scary as fuck
sending a small and gentle pat on the head to anyone newer to the series
