Photo booth (Simon 'Ghost' Riley x GN! reader)
Warnings: none (let me know if there is any!)
Word count: 1079
There weren't many times when Simon had a day off, but when he did, you better know he'd be spending every moment with his partner.
Back for a few days after a long mission? Reports are finished in record time and left on Price's desk.
A few hours between long meetings? He's calling you or sending a text, just wanting a moment of peace and to hear your voice before he'll inevitably have to deal with Soap's shenanigans.
Point being any time away from work he has, you're the first thing on his mind, and he will do anything to get that little bit of recharge time with the one person who he feels he can truly relax with.
So when the 141 gets back from a long, few-month mission on the other side of the globe, as soon as humanly possible, Simon's heading home to be with you.
The first few days are just spent curled up together. Lazy mornings turning into lazy afternoons with lingering touches and tender kisses. Cooking together in the warmth of your shared kitchen, his big arms wrapped around your waist as his chin rests on the top of your head. Warm meals and lots of storytelling, more so coming from your end, but who wouldn't want to know about how the neighbours got into another fight and might be ending in divorce this time?
After those initial days just gently getting back into the calm civilian life, the two of you are more than happy to adventure out for the day. Treating yourselves to a nice cup of tea and a fresh pastry from a rather fancy cafe in the heart of town and a calm walk by river, hand in hand, the two of you find yourselves in a little corner store as the clouds roll over and little drops start to fall.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
"Bloody hell love, a little rain won't hurt ya," Simon chuckles as you pull him into a nearby corner store as the droplets of rain start to gain momentum, falling in a more rapid succession.
"Yes, but I did my hair today, and I don't want it to be ruined," you answer with a playful roll of your eyes. The store is much more pleasant than the rain, with a warm glow to the lights and, most importantly, nice and dry.
Deciding to busy yourselves while the rain rolls over, the two of you go up and down the few isles, pointing out little snacks you want to try or ones you have tried and definitely didn't like. Coming to the end of one of the isles you spot an old photo booth pushed into the corner and excitedly pull on Simon's arm.
"Si, look! Do you think it works?" The whole thing looks like it hasn't been used in a long while, but, taking your chances, you pull the curtain open and the display lights up.
"Suppose it does, come 'ere," a large hand moves to hold your waist as you're pulled onto Simon's lap, the two of you making a tight fit in the small booth.
With an excited squeal you press a few buttons, pulling a few pound coins from your pocket and inserting them into the machine, a quick preview of the photo format appearing on the screen. Before the two of you can plan what your poses will be, the first timer starts counting down.
""Right, just a smile then?" He says, guiding one of your arms over his shoulders as you lean your head closer, big smile pulling at your lips and a hint of a curl on the Brits. The flash clicks and the photo shows before another timer starts counting down.
"Now a silly one!" You say, holding up bunny ears behind his head as you stick your tongue out, Simon doing quite the similar pose. The timer stops and another flash goes off, both your eyes drawn to the preview of the photo. For a burly military man Simon sure does look a bit silly with the tip of his tongue poking out and your fingers as bunny ears behind him, contrasting his usual hard and gruff facade he put son for the average individual.
"Hey, you copied my idea," A playful shove is given to his shoulder as you look at the photo, chuckles leaving the both of you. "Can't help if it's a good idea," Simons voice grumbles though the smile on his scared lips tells you how happy you make him as he pokes a finger in your ribs, making you laugh.
"Simon!" You giggle, half heartedly pulling away from him, "That tickles!" The Brit doesn't stop his teasing and you try to pull away again that you almost fall off his lap, arms flailing slightly but a hand firmly on your waist ensures you don't go anywhere. In the struggle the timer for the third photo finishes and the flash goes off just as you feel like you're tipping.
As the two of you calm your giggles you see there's only one photo left and you turn to look at Simon, exaggerated disappointment on your face. "Look you ruined the photo," you tease as you point to the screen.
"Wouldn't have been ruined if ya were more original," He chuckles, fingers lightly pinching your thigh as he gazes at you with those big brown eyes. "I'm plenty original, thank you"
The timer counting down for the fourth and final picture snaps you both back as you stumble to figure out one last pose.
"What do you we do for this one?" You ask out loud as you try your hardest to think of a cute pose.
Without more than a little grumble of a 'Come 'ere' Simons free hand reaches up and gently wraps around your neck, pointer finger helping guide your face to his as your lips meet his. All thoughts are almost completely disregarded as you lean into his touch, eyes fluttering closed as his tongue traces the seam of your lips. Just as you begin to part your lips the flash goes off and the machine begins to print the series of photos.
""ere you go, love," Simon grumbles as his hand leaves your warm skin to grab the photos, handing them to you. Hand on your thigh giving you a gently pat before guiding you off his lap and out of the photo booth, grin on his lips the whole time.

What Picture Of You The Baki Men Choose As Their Phone Background, Pt. 1 <3
Reader X Baki, Retsu, and Katsumi
I saw this prompt for some other fandoms and thought it was absolutely adorable, so here are some silly little sweet headcanons for your reading pleasure!
Thank you and I hope you enjoy!
Warnings: Mostly fluff, some mentions of suggestive themes and spicy texts, but other than that it’s rather mild. Also, it’s pretty lightly edited. No gendered words, but leans towards a female reader.
/)/) /)/) ( . .) (⸝⸝ᵕ ᵕ) ~ ♪ (ა📱ა૮( )ა
Baki Hanma 📱
Lock Screen- A cute picture of the two of you from one of your first official dates. It was at an amusement park and some of the park employees were greeting oncoming guests dressed up as mascots, milling around the front of the park posing with and taking pictures with the newcomers. At the time you were rather embarrassed, the characters mostly flocked to the children that were entering the park, but since there were no children in your party they all buzzed around you instead. The huge, florescent pink cat-suited individual that danced around you commented on what a lovely couple you were, urging you and Baki to form a heart with your hands as they posed energetically behind you, their cohort (an equally bright blue dog) snapping a quick picture of the three of you with Baki’s phone. Though the photo was rushed and a little blurry, you are all smiles in the shot, both yourself and Baki looking both bashful and genuinely happy. The love radiating through that image alone warms his heart each time he glances at it, and it warmed yours in turn to know he cherished the memory as much as you did, going so far as to set it as his lock screen so that he could be reminded of it each time he checked his phone.
Home Screen- A candid picture of yourself on another one of your dates, taken quite some time after the amusement park picture was taken. The newbie awkwardness in your relationship had greatly diminished at this point, a peaceful sort of comfort and familiarity now reigning supreme in your romance. Years of being with another person does that to you, your new-relationship jitters subsiding as you get to know all about your partner, their best and worst sides. With time all their obnoxious or gross habits have long since been laid bare, but you are still somehow simultaneously finding new things about them that make you love them even more. Your love changes with time, morphing from something fresh and new to something much deeper, more concrete, more real. The picture he displayed on his homes screen was taken on a random day at a random time when nothing in particular was going on. You were simply walking in front of him and stopped for a brief moment to look at something across the way. He wasn’t even sure what it was that caught your attention, didn’t even really care, he was just fully fixated on you and how breathtakingly gorgeous you looked in that average, everyday moment. Before he even realized he was doing it he snapped a pic, and he was very grateful that he did. Each time he stares at his screen his heart races, beating so rapidly it’s as if he was back in the puppy-love stage of the relationship, and he falls for you all over again.
/)/) /)/) ( . .) (⸝⸝ᵕ ᵕ) ~ ♪ (ა📱ა૮( )ა
Retsu Kaioh 📱
Lock Screen- Like Baki, Retsu is rather fond of candid pictures. Something about capturing you spur of the moment in your day to day life really appeals to him, his heart fluttering when he catches glimpses of reminders that you have become a part of his daily routine. He gets to witness you in all states of being, and knowing you are comfortable enough around him to be your most natural, unguarded self, warms his heart like nothing else. You yourself didn’t find anything super special about the picture he took of you at the home and garden store. If anything you felt the image of yourself holding a succulent in a death grip, eying it a little too intensely as you debated whether you wanted to purchase it or not, was embarrassing. Retsu begs to differ, and each time you gripe about it he goes on a mini spiel, explaining to you in a little too much detail just how endearing he finds your ‘suffering an internal crisis as you try to find the perfect plant for the kitchen windowsill’ expression. This never ceases to instantly make your cheeks blush bright red at the impassioned nature of his tone. Still, the fact that he can find such ardent moments of love in the mundane is one of the reasons why you fell for him to begin with. You hope to share many more little adventures with him that yield even more random pictures you can look back on and smile, whether you personally find them flattering or not. As long as they bring Retsu joy, you will find joy in them as well.
Home Screen- If the picture of you at the store made you a little self-conscious, then his home screen was enough to make you want to bury your face and cry. At some point he had snapped an image of you asleep on the couch. This wasn’t some cutesy ‘I just fell asleep and look like a peaceful little angel’ snooze either- you were DEEP in the troughs of a nap, completely dead to the world. Mouth wide open with a rivulet of drool seeping out the side, old shirt rumpled up with your hand rested on your exposed belly, hair an absolute rats nest as it messily framed your head, it was the kind of picture that could easily be used as blackmail. Yet Retsu cherished it, beaming down at it like a parent looking at their child’s straight A report card. While you cringed each time you peered at his phone screen, questioning why in the world he would pick such an unflattering picture of you to stare at each day, it crossed your mind that maybe he set it as a joke, or to poke fun at you. That thought was quickly laid to rest however, as the sheer look of pure love that reflected in his eyes each time he stared at it made you keenly aware that his choice of setting it as his wallpaper was no prank. Somehow he found true beauty in that gross picture of you, and that in and of itself melted your heart a little bit. So it didn’t really matter how much you loathed the picture, after seeing Retsu’s puppy dog eyes as he stared at your passed out visage you decided it was fine to let him keep it as his background in lieu of something a little more complementary (as long as no one else was allowed to use his phone and potentially see it, that is).
/)/) /)/) ( . .) (⸝⸝ᵕ ᵕ) ~ ♪ (ა📱ა૮( )ა
Katsumi Orochi 📱
Lock Screen- He is definitely the type of dude to have some kind of dweeby, professionally done picture of the two of you as his lock screen. You remember thinking he was kidding when he asked you if you were interested in booking a couples photo session, but when you noted the serious look in his eye as he pressed the issue, you knew the offer wasn’t a joke. Though hesitant, you found yourself unable to turn him down, and a few days later you found yourself in a photo studio posing awkwardly while a photographer happily snapped away, complimenting what a cute couple you were as he directed you to pose this way or that. Despite the previous uncertainty and slightly uncomfortable atmosphere, quite a few gems were born from the shoot, and you ended up being very happy to have some beautifully charming shots to look back on. A certain picture stood out from the rest, one grabbed just as some silly, random comment from Katsumi made you both burst into a fit of laughter. With his arms wrapped around you from behind and huge genuine smiles engulfing both your faces, you leaned into one other, reliant on each other’s support lest you collapse to the ground into a pile of giggles. It was such a fun, happy capture that it very easily became your all-time favorite picture of the two of you. So you couldn’t help but smile when you happened to spy his lock screen, finding it ironic that he chose your favorite picture to grace his background, especially when your own lock screen displayed the exact same pic. <3
Home Screen- A spicier selfie you sent him in the past. While there is no nudity in the shot itself, you can pinpoint the precise moment you took the shot, remembering it as one that definitely led to some much more revealing pictures (with provocative text to match). You also remembered being quite proud of the selfie- the seductive smolder in your eye, the way your shirt had slunk down your shoulder, the coy little smile on your face as you bit into your bottom lip, all of it came together for a truly sexy presentation. You weren’t one to often brag about your looks, but that day you worked hard to look hot and it had certainly paid off. That day had also blessed you with good lighting and one of the best hair/makeup days of your life, so to see the image grace his phone screen made butterflies burst in your stomach, a feeling of elation washing over you with the realization that the effort you put in was not in vain. Though it made you blush a little to see that he had made one of the private pictures you sent him his phone background, there was no denying that it pleased you greatly. He was the type of man that earnestly believed that you were the most gorgeous thing on the planet no matter how much or little you were dolled up, but realizing that he took extra notice of when you put in effort to look your best for him, liking it to the point of making it a picture he could stare at all day (while all manner of fantasies were surely buzzing through his brain)…. Well, it certainly set your heart a flutter, for more reason than one.

For Cassia: 3, 8, 11! And for Nyxram: 1, 6, 11!
<:D!! AAAAA thank you so much!
Secret Ask List
-------------------- .: • CASSIA --------------------
3) what song describes your oc?
cassia is one of those ocs where the music i find for her playlist is almost all vibes and not really based on lyrics. it's the energy of the music, the way it makes you wanna move or bob or sing along. that being said: "rage" by hyper crush and "joyride" by kesha immediately make me think of her. lyrically, "i love it" by icona pop might be a good fit.
8) what hobbies does your oc have? what do they do to unwind?
cassia's major hobby is rollerskating! but she's also super into street art, and she enjoys beautifying her favorite areas of new york in a manner of silly or meaningful ways. when she's at home, she also enjoys random doodling--mostly ideas for graffiti or future street art--learning dances from her favorite music videos, and playing a variety of video games.
11) what was your inspiration for your oc?
i distinctly remember driving to my local movie trading company to see if they had any physical dvds for tmnt'03, and "girlfriend" by avril lavigne came on spotify shuffle. for whatever reason, i got the image of a pink-haired girl in rollerskates, and she wouldn't leave my head. cassia's my first tmnt oc, and i think she was always meant to be kind of like april in that she's a grounding presence in their otherwise chaotic lives. despite how high-energy and mischievous she is, she's extremely stable and does regularly go to therapy, which has made her more thoughtful and aware of others along with herself. her biggest conflicts come from being an out trans-girl in the 90s and early 2000s, but none of it is tied to her immediate family (her parents ADORE her). she is, for the most part, about as ''''average'''' a civilian in the tmnt'03 world as you can get. i dunno! i think i kind of just wanted to give them all another anchor of sorts, another safe haven. cassia's parents, oliver and esme, also become guardian figures to the turtles in a sense (especially mikey). esme loves to mother them.
-------------------- .: • NYXRAM ----------------------------
1) does your oc have a voice claim, if so who?
god yes. nyx's voice claim is shohreh aghdashloo. the moment i heard her as enforcer grayson in arcane, i pointed at the screen and muttered: "you". as someone who's very picky about these sorts of things i seriously feel like it was gift-wrapped to me. >xD shohreh also provides the voice for the dragon in damsel, which is a dumb as hell movie but i will continue to listen to it for the sake of hearing her talk.
6) if your oc is in a fantasy setting, what profession would they be in the modern day?
kind of a weird question, since 'modern day' implies that this is more a difference in time period? e-e;; i imagine she'd likely still have assassin roots, but. after the rebellion succeeds, the republic begins to rebuild, and the games are disbanded, nyxram takes it upon herself to use her family's "estate" as a sanctuary for the animals used in the games, since most of them can't be returned to their natural habitats due to injuries and/or being raised in captivity. so! i think a potential "modern day" or "human" profession for her might be owning and managing something like an old friends senior dogs sanctuary. providing housing, love, and comfort for older animals when most folks want younger pets, and ensuring that their last few years are happy and safe. she's taken so much life, so... it feels like giving back, in a way.
11) what was your inspiration for your oc?
@/plantdonut doesn't live with me (alas), but if she did, i would have turned to her during our '03 rewatch a few years ago and asked, bluntly, "why do all the triceratons gotta be dudes? where're my giant, amazon warrior dinosaurs?". and within a few days, i was practicing my hand at drawing triceratons, so i could make it so. my two major points of inspiration for nyx come from cassandra cain (2nd batgirl, pre-new52) and john wick. cassandra for being... basically born and bred to be the perfect assassin, only to have 'too much' compassion and love and guilt and go hero instead, and john wick for being a 'baba yaga' to anyone who knows his name. not the boogeyman, but the one you send to kill the boogeyman. the idea of a triceraton assassin was very cool to me, given that they're often a straight-forward, loud, and blunt force to face with little concern for being subtle. it also draws an interesting connection to her and the turtles; at some point nyx comments that despite their practice being tied to assassins such as herself, any blood on their hands comes from self-defense. in some ways, she envies them. but in many more, she doesn't. she's the sole survivor of her clutch, and the only one of her siblings to 'earn' a name. she was, in a way, a political move--a gift/tool offered to the prime leader to ensure that her parents had a connection to power and could continue their own work with protection from punishment. ...they just didn't expect for her to want something else. since the triceratons seem to have a handful of 'nods' and aesthetics pointing toward the roman empire, i named nyxram after the greek goddess 'nyx', the personification and substance of night. i also specifically use greek spelling with her, whereas her parents will have roman spelling of their names to further emphasize her 'otherness' from triceraton society as a whole.
#tmnt oc#tmnt 2003 oc#;letters: heaven's night#;asks: secret ask list#;tmnt oc: cassia dubois#;tmnt oc: nyxram#[ no i haven't named nyx's parents yet because naming characters is HARD and i want to do it with PURPOSE ]#[ but i at least have ...the 'rules' for their names... in that they need to be roman spelling... yes ]#[ they would be the people whose names are 'nyx' and 'ram' and combine their names to#name their kid because they can't be fucking bothered to think up an actual name tho ]#[ i started to say that to jenn once as a joke but then realized no actually they suck enough to do that for real ]#[ but that's not the angle i decided to take in the end >xD;; they still need names ]#[ BUT THANK YOU c: !!!! ]

Thinking of you and the rest of the people who were apart of the fexi fandom last year during this time. I’m thankful for all the memories made that we can look back on for happier times when we need it. Take care of yourself and you have people here if you need it ❤️🩹
Thank you anon, that’s very kind of you. Fexi is the first fandom I ever really got involved with. I’ve been a fan of different things in the past, read fic for it, even written a few but I never really did anything past that. Fexi was the first time I immersed myself within a community. I interacted with others, got to know some people, reached out to others I didn’t know and discussed the show and ships, even getting to the point of talking about non-fandom things and just everyday life things, the good stuff, the bad, the struggles, triumphs etc. I’m introverted for the most part, unless I really click with you and the easiest way to do that is through common interests and through Fexi fandom, I was able to come out of my shell for the first time in a long time.
I also was going through a rough time last year, I had a break up of sorts and my parents marriage was at very turbulent point and there was just a lot of toxicity around me. Fexi fanfic, tumblr and the connections I made through the fandom really and truly got me through some hard days - I don’t know what I would have done without it. I am so thankful for what this experience has brought me. I’m heartbroken over Angus as he was such a light, on screen and off. Although he is more than Fezco, the pieces of him he put into portraying such an amazing character has been such a big part of coping during the heavy times and that means so much to me. That might sound silly to the average person but all of you understand where I’m coming from because you are feeling it too - the sadness, the helplessness, the disbelief, the gratitude and the anger that someone so young, so kind would be taken from his loved ones so soon. I didn’t know him personally but I appreciated the parts of him he allowed us to see. I’ll always have the memories, the fics, the fan art etc. but nothing could ever take the place of Angus himself, the world truly lost a rare gem. Feel for everyone in the fandom who is mourning him rn. If anyone needs to talk, I’m always here to lend an ear and that includes you anon. Take care ❤️

Well, it took like two weeks longer than it should have, solely because I wanted to collect the legends this time and Raikou is a pain in my ass. But I finished Crystal. Commentary under the cut.
Ledian was, for all intents and purposes, my starter. I wound up breeding for Psybeam off Venomoth (yes, I used Dupe Glitch to get the Rare Candies to get that done in a reasonable timeframe, don't worry about it), and gave it Thunderpunch/Ice Punch as its other moves. Light Screen was the final, but if I could do it all over, I would've kept Reflect instead. Ledian wound up pretty good. Its offenses left a lot to be desired, but its defenses made up for it a bit. Special Defense in a game where all moves of a type are special means you can wall out a good number of fights just fine. In short, even Lance fears the bug, because Thunderpunch is excellent against Gyarados, and Ice Punch can destroy Dragonite. The real selling point is that Ledian has a fast level up rate. If I could do anything different, I might have just put more time into Ledian, because it really has an excellent time against a lot of threats in this generation. Bless the elemental punches.
Bellossom, my sweet baby who took forever to find for some reason, was...okay. Sleep Powder is devastatingly powerful this game, so as long as she gets a hit in, she did well enough. One run of the League, I managed to take out four of Lance's Pokemon just with Bellossom. Petal Dance/Sludge Bomb/Moonlight/Sleep Powder can get you a lot of mileage, though it is funny that Gen 2 is the way it is, resulting in Moonlight not recovering much if the time of day isn't night. The main hiccup is that Petal Dance can be really hit and miss, and a lot of her matchups that I wanted to be better weren't solely because Petal Dance was just shy of a 2HKO. Queen of infuriating ranges, this plant.
Umbreon is my wife's favorite Eeveelution, but I admit it's always taken a back seat with me. I'm 100% and Espeon player. But I decided that this run was, in part, finding Pokemon that are good at counterpicking certain sets. And Umbreon...you know, I actually really like it. It tanks incredibly well, and has enough offensive power to respond decently well. It counters Will complete, is quite helpful against Koga, did well with Karen thanks to Headbutt before reaching Moonlight level, and can be an effective option against some of Lance's team. Faint Attack is great against Red's Espeon, since it negates his only real counterplay in Mud Slap. Confuse Ray can absolutely cheese shakier fights. Moonlight is great recovery. I kept Bite as my last move, just because it was so effective at flinching when Umbreon is faster, and the high PP rate meant exploring was much easier. But I did consider Psychic, and Umbreon would've done amazing with it.
Corsola was a fun pick. I've never once run Corsola, but I realized that this was a good time to try, given Red's Charizard. What's fun is that Corsola actually does have a tremendous number of tools in its arsenal. Much like Ledian, it has a fast level sequence. Surf is just very strong, and let it clear Jasmine just fine. But the real fun was Rollout + Harden. It's a silly set, but Rollout gets up to some very funny shenanigans if it hits. Pryce gets bopped, Koga gets bopped, Lance gets bopped. Recover is the part that really gets it going. While you can't pivot to it at any time while using Rollout, it can stall out some major threats as needed. Corsola wound up being a lot of fun, and easily counters Red's Charizard.
Piloswine! ...god, I'm gonna be sad about this. Piloswine was a mistake. I'm sorry, Piloswine, you know I love you, but good lord. Swinub fell behind the level curve tremendously, and was exceptionally difficult to get caught up. Once it did, it could perform decently well, but the path to the average level was fraught with constant failure. It really did not have a great life. Which is sad. I really wanted Piloswine to shine, and it did not. Set was Powder Snow/Ice Beam/Earthquake/Strength. Hit hard where it mattered, but often didn't get to be overly impressive. I kinda wish its experience went to Corsola and Ledian instead. It would've been more levels. Though I guess that would've also meant Pikachu was much harder.
Misdreavus is great, solely because it's a 100% counter to Snorlax. Dead serious, it cannot be hurt by Snorlax, so Curse TM means you win guaranteed. I love her dearly. I know it's a last minute acquisition, but it's nice to have a last second addition that's fully ready to throw down with the superboss the instant you pick it up. Love that for her. Set was Shadow Ball, Curse, Perish Song, Flash.
Overall, I had a really fun time. I think I should've just ignored Piloswine, let the levels do the talking for Ledian and Corsola, and instead just caught like a level 35 Rhydon from the Victory Road path to clear Pikachu for free anyway. Oh well, live and learn.
Not sure what game's going next on handheld. I'm considering Emerald, but not sure yet. Stay tuned.

ignore that silly anon omg! ur rec posts were sooo refreshing, especially bc u weren't necessarily rec'ing obvious authors. i love the way you talk <3 everything u write is so funny, your fic notes are their own delight to read & so many of your fics are lowkey underrated. luv the crack fics and how they still have serious elements. "here i am & here you are" is in my all-time favs and i'm so happy ur on tumblr and in this fandom <3333
Thank you so much ❤️ You're the absolute sweetest and I have no words because you've used all the lovely, heartwrenching ones. BUT! Since you mentioned that "Here I Am & Here You Are" is your favourite, I thought I'd share a coda for the fic that never made it into the fic mostly because I only wrote it two hours back. Also, this one goes out to all the SamBucky fans who were sad that the two didn't get much screen time in the fic!
"We Just Keep Going" on AO3 | 1,829 words | Rated M
"Well, well, well," Bucky propped a hand up against the door. "If it isn't my favourite person with my second least favourite person. A pair, when put together, forming a union so utterly average in my favourites list that it doesn't even warrant the work of accurate ranking."
"Did you run lines for that?" Steve asked.
"You're not very good at math." Tony tilted his head.
"Agh." Bucky wrinkled his nose, "I already hate this sequel. Come on in."
"Sequel?" Steve added as he pushed their suitcases through. Tony trailed behind them, running a hand over the flat tile on the door, a colourful piece that bore the words, "BEARS AHEAD! GRR!"
"You two. Back together." Bucky shook his head, "can I have it on the record that I don't endorse this?"
"What record?" Tony asked. "What're you even on about? I thought you lost an arm, not your head."
"Wow." Bucky pointed a finger at Tony. "You know, this is why people call you "difficult"."
"Yeah, yeah," Tony said, "how's the new one handling you?"
"I would say like a dream but I don't want to feed your ego, so I'll say like a," Bucky steepled his fingers, metal and human hand making a compelling image when intertwined. Like some harmonic fusion of AI and humanity. Real cyberpunk shit. Bucky exhaled, deciding on, "like a well-constructed reality."
"Okay." Tony drew out the word, "is Chip here?"
"Who?"
"Sam." Steve clarified.
"Oh, haha, Chip 'n Dale, I get it. You think you're funny. Shut the fuck up." Bucky said, no bite to the words. "Yeah, he's around here."
"What a welcome." Tony crossed his arms. "Okay. I'm gonna change, then lay on the couch, drape an arm over my eyes and nap off the jet lag."
"Sure." Bucky shrugged. "Sam's gone to get burgers. Should I wake you then?"
"Steve can wake me then." Tony shot a glare at Bucky. "Since he knows how to do it without totally violating someone."
"It was one time, we were twenty-two, and the ice had all but melted." Bucky protested, quips easy from an argument too often regurgitated, so well-worked that they slipped out easy even after a decade.
Demonstrating that the passage of time didn't necessarily reflect emotional growth, Tony shot Bucky a middle finger. Then, after pointedly waiting for Bucky to point out the bathroom, he took his clothes from the carrier bag and went over to the bathroom. The snick of the lock rang in a final pointed gesture and in the pointed silence afterward, Steve and Bucky met each other's gaze.
"You gonna give your old man a hug or are you too grown up for that kind of thing?" Steve asked.
"What the fuck are you saying?" Bucky made a disgusted sound, "you ever say that to me again, I'm kicking you out, brother or not."
"Alright, tough guy. Come here." Steve urged, bringing Bucky forward and hugging him, taking care to pat him on the back of the flesh shoulder.
"Y'okay? You all mushy?" Bucky asked into his shoulder, "Tony treating you well?"
"Shuddup." Steve replied good-naturedly, "You run Sam into an early grave yet?"
"He's a slow runner." Bucky seesawed, pulling back to make the gesture.
"Don't I know it." Steve said, "seriously, though. How've you been?"
". . . Better." Bucky admitted, "Not everyday, but, you know. . . a lotta days. It's good. I'm good."
"That's a solid deal." Steve praised, raising his eyebrows to punctuate the point.
"Ain't it?" Bucky gave a flash of a grin, all young fire and old contentment.
"I'm glad to hear it, Buck." Steve said, gripping the man's shoulder for a moment, just a brief press, "I really, really am."
"I know, ya big sap." Bucky shrugged the moment off. "How's Tony been? You fucking each other's brains out?"
"Reckon it would take a while to fuck Tony's brains out." Steve pondered, "since he's a genius and all. Lots of brain. . . cells."
"Okay." Bucky raised his eyes heavenward. "He ain't even that smart. Remember when he thought a carton of milk cost eight bucks?"
"He's a futurist." Steve said in his defense. "Give it a few years, it probably will."
"Christ alive." Bucky shook his head. "Good thing Sam's only drinking soy and whatnot."
"Agh, he's converted you?" Steve wrinkled his nose.
"Ye-up." Bucky turned his thumbs inwards, pointing at himself. "Total believer in the soy cream, right here."
"If your mother could see you now, she wouldn't even recognise you." Steve shook his head faux-solemnly.
"Uh, duh. Why'd you think I grew my hair out?" Bucky scritched a finger against his chin.
"I dunno, to hide your ugly mug?" Steve volleyed.
"Is that what the scruff on your face is for?" Bucky poked him. "'Cause what's that about?"
"I didn't have time to shave while travelling." Steve said, "I'll shave it off when I shower later. Tony likes me clean-shaven, anyway."
"Tony likes me clean-shaven, anyway." Bucky mocked in a jeering tone. "Jeez, the two a you are awful."
Steve paused, set his lips in a straight line and said, "'Cause the stubble can be scratchy when I'm rimming him."
"Eugh. Yuck." Bucky shook his shoulders out. "What the fuck, eugh. Oh god, I'm gonna gag."
"Okay, drama queen." Steve rolled his eyes. He took the pause to push their suitcases up against the wall. Upon turning back, he found Bucky raising an eyebrow at him.
"That's a homophobic remark." Bucky said.
"You're." Steve ran a hand over his face, "I'm too jet-lagged to listen to you right now."
"Good way to say you can't think of a comeback."
"Don't say comeback, it reminds me of—"
"Blah, blah, blah." Bucky stuck his fingers in his ears, "can't hear you, can't be traumatised by you and Tony." His voice rose higher with the second sentence, and it proved the "losing one sense amplifies the other senses" thing wrong because limiting his hearing was obviously causing an amp up in Bucky's lack of common sense and also, his (already debilitated and clearly debilitating further) sense of humour.
Thankfully though, it seemed that the universe was immune from the senses thing because it was with an apt sense for timing that the doorbell chose that moment to ring out.
Steve let Bucky continue his immature performance, going up to open the door in the charmless host's stead.
"Hey!" Sam greeted, takeout bags in both hands, "you're here!"
"Hey Sam," Steve returned, taking the takeout bags from him and moving them to the dining table, "good to see you, man. How've you been?"
"Great, great." Sam said, "How're you? Travel safe?"
"Yeah, perfectly." Steve said, "Tony's just getting changed. You came back quick, eh?"
"Got lucky with the line." Sam said, "how's—man. What are you doing?"
Bucky took his fingers out of his ears and gave Sam a sheepish smile, "well, well, well." He said faux-menacingly, "if it isn't my least favourite person."
"Don't say that about Steve." Sam sidestepped, "and why're you acting like a child?" Without waiting for an answer, Sam entered the kitchen and the sound of running water followed.
"FYI, this is why you're Dale in Tony's "Chip 'n Dale" analogy." Steve said.
"Look at you, bein' such a supportive boyfriend." Bucky said. "Boy oh boy, I best be careful or I'll be out of the running for boyfriend of the year."
The lock of the bathroom door clicked and Tony came out in a grey sweatshirt and trousers. Steve decided to save the fact that they were both Steve's clothing items for later, when Tony was sleepy enough to only notice the reprimand and not how hot Steve got at the sight of it. Tony ran a hand through his hair as he asked, "I heard the door. Sam's here?"
"Kitchen." Steve jutted a thumb out, and Tony headed over to say hi.
As the two began what sounded like an incredibly mature exchange of greetings, Steve and Bucky shared a short look.
"We are not the immature ones in our relationship." Bucky insisted, "we are not the "Dale" of the relationship."
"I think they're brothers, anyway." Steve gave an involuntary rictus, "Tony's always multi-tasking when we watch films. It's a problem. I'm working on it."
"Yeah, okay." Bucky sighed. "Hey, Stevie, off the record?"
"The record that doesn't exist?" Steve asked, "that record?"
"The very same." Bucky cleared his throat. "I'm happy you're back together, you know? Real happy. You average each other out."
"In your favourites ranking or in general?" Steve asked.
"Both, genius." Bucky said. "That's why you two work so well together."
"Thanks, Bucky." Steve said. "You too, you know?"
"I know." Bucky said, giving him a genuine smile. That, more than anything, made Steve feel properly settled. He was out of business in taking other people's opinions on him and Tony getting back together, but Bucky was definitely the closest to being a person he could trust to know enough to be accurate and honest enough to be truthful. So—the fact that he approved, well. It just mattered.
Sam and Tony walked out of the kitchen, still chatting, with table mats in Sam's hands for the food.
"Hey, Tones." Bucky walked forward, "hey, buddy, come here."
Tony made an "oof" sort of sound as Bucky came up and hugged him, matter-of-fact about it. The look Tony sent over to Steve over the shoulder was bamboozled. Befuddled. Somewhat begrudged. A tad bemused.
"Hey." Tony said, "you okay?"
"Yeah." Bucky patted him twice on the back and then stepped back. He pointed at Tony with the metal hand and at Steve with the other, "you two break up again, I'm suing you for psychiatric damage."
Tony's finger met Bucky's in a perversion of the E.T. greeting, pushing him back as he said, "Buckaroo, you couldn't afford me."
"Can we continue this over food?" Sam called out, "'cause I didn't wait twenty minutes for cold fast food."
"Sure thing, babe." Bucky grabbed Sam by the scruff of his neck and pulled him in for a tight hug and a peck on the cheek, "there, there. Didn't mean to make you feel left out."
"I wasn't even—" Sam tried to shrug out the hug for a futile moment before quickly conceding to it, "whatever, okay."
"I don't want to break up," Tony sidled over to Steve, "but I do want to keep up with the psychiatric damage."
"Agree." Steve wrapped an arm around Tony's waist.
"Should we fuck on his bed?" Tony suggested.
"Sam would suffer too, then, and he doesn't deserve it." Steve said, adding with a thoughtful tone, "let's do it on his old bike."
"We do average out." Tony said, and then, at Steve's startled surprise, "see, I can multi-task."

Just finished the annual Alien and Aliens rewatch, usually would do it closer to Halloween but DBD's Alien release got me eager. And once again it's simply stunning how perfectly the movies meld into one another, and how excellently they hold up. The first movie does such a great job of building tension with simple scenes that, in a lot of movies today would just be cut out entirely. Whole extended scenes of characters just walking around a room or down a corridor, arguments between characters, just small things that really build the tension and sense of foreboding. And it does a great job of hiding the Xeno, because obviously the effects were not perfect. The couple of times we see the Xeno full on, on an average television screen today, you can clearly tell it's a guy in a rubbery suit. But you only get that twice in the whole movie, once it's the briefest flash of the creature in the vents and then the scene cuts away, and then at the very end. The rest of the time it's shadows, sharp movements, bits and pieces, and it does such a great job of putting together the idea of this terrifying, stealth killer that is picking apart this crew piece by piece with no real recourse.
Likewise, Aliens is one of the few sequels I can think of that really just says "More is more!" and does it flawlessly. A bigger, badder threat being dealt with by a bigger, badder crew and it's basically the same outcome. It's not as much of a horror movie obviously, but it still does a fantastic job of mounting tension and fear with the trackers and the way the characters respond. You spend about half the movie just getting to know what Ripley is dealing with, how the various characters are going into this, and seeing a bunch of marines who are loaded up to kill whatever they find and treating this like it's going to be a walk in the park, and when shit hits the fan they do respond to it, but between bad leadership and being ambushed, they don't win. It's a pretty fantastic show of scaling up the threat without making it lose it's potency in terms of the terror and the shock.
And again, the effects are so well done. We get to see more of the Xenos obviously, and while they're still not perfect, the lighting and the action is done in such a way that artfully conceals that rather than simply trying to make every scene a thousand cut mess. The Queen looks frightening and imposing, though I think anyone whose seen the movies a couple times can agree that her fight with Ripley in the mech has a couple moments where it looks just a tad silly. But the point is that doesn't detract from the overall excitement and pure adrenaline that is everything else coming together properly.
Every year I watch these movies and Over the Garden Wall as sort of my Halloween season setter, and in all three cases I notice little things that I didn't before, or have new thoughts. I could honestly talk on and on about all of them and all the fun themes and character arcs. But I won't, at least not right now. I know no one will read this, it's just me shouting into the void. And thank god for that, I love being able to shout into the void.

Ough ok, today's eaps episode really Got to me and boy I was not prepared
I find it interesting, that the things that would trigger and harm other people, I love to seek out as a hobby. Shock sites, well made args, real life disappearances in the woods, existential conspiracy theories, etc. shit my schizo ass Really shouldn't be indulging but I do anyway for the sillies even tho it triggers persecutory hallucinations (please for the love of God don't do as I do). I find morbid and gorey shit fascinating
but then you just, have something simple as a 'make a wish kid' concept in a silly little VRC rp. and. it really fucks with me
because like, I'm never Not aware of how little time I have left. I am constantly under the ticking tower of death. Everyone talks about graduating college, getting a career, getting married, being able to live on their own. and I?-
I am just stuck. I'll maybe get to accomplish One of these and that's it. Knowing that I most likely won't live to see my 30s. And in two more months, the clock ticks down to 6 years left. 6 years till I develop bone marrow cancer or skin cancer from my immunosuppressant. And that's assuming that I survive till then, the never ending surgeries that remove my organs piece until there's nothing left; assuming I don't catch a skin or respiratory infection that everyone else can fight off except for me; assuming that I don't resume trying to overdose like I should've done when I was 14, before the universe decided I was a parasite it had to slowly kill off; assuming I survive living in a sundown town; assuming I don't die in a freak accident like a normal american on the highway; assuming I don't give into the impulse to do opiods to escape the neverending pain; assuming I'm able to get my shit together and take care of myself without having some needing to intervene before I literally wither away; etc. I could keep going about how the former prognosis is infact a positive outlook by all calculations.
Surprisingly, I've come to terms with this a few years ago. It's not a big deal. Well I mean it is, but it's nothing that can't be worked around. Everyone lives on borrowed time, we are never promised tomorrow anyway. The wise say to live like very day is you last, and whether I like it or not, I have the most reason to follow that compared to the average Joe
But what they don't tell you, is that, you never go through the grieving process once or twice. When you know your time is going to be up in less than a decade, it doesn't Ever stop. You just suffer the same stages over, and over, and over, and over again. Till you're fine. and then the next day your brain decides the last dozen times wasn't enough, time to process the state of our mortality all over again :) bc why not :) :) fml in particular ig
And honest to God that is the worst part of this all. It's not the colonoscopies, it's not the endoscopies, it's not the surgeries, it's not the thousands of needles that I've been stabbed with to the point where I can rate nurses like it's doordash. It's the grieving process that won't stop repeating once you know you're going to die
Anyway I just- I don't even know if I can finish the episode, and I'm only a few minutes in. This might honestly be the first video I'll ever have to skip. and it's SO FUCKING STUP:ID. Like I can go through all of this other bullshit jsut fine and not bat an eye, but THIS, THIS IS THE BREAKING POINT??? Fucking pathetic. I hate myself so mcuh tjhis is so stupid and I hate it. I think what I hate most is how I can never fucking get over myself. boo hoo so fcuking what. Just push through and stop being a limp dick coward for two mcfucking seconds. It's not even real, are we really gonna get our panies bunched up over pixles ona fucking screen? Is this Really the level we want to stoop to? Fukcing piece of shit good for nothing idiot.
It's not like I don't know Why it affects me so badly. It's all so stupid but I Know why. For fucks sake, I got body slammed into fnaf as a whole to cope with the fact my grandma literally got admitted to the hospital for emergency brain cancer surgery on the hour of Thee solar eclipse that happened in April. When she got admitted to hospice in May and we were dealing with the funeral, obsessing over the dca and later solar lunacy and TSAMS was the only thing keeping me sane.
Words cannot describe accurately just how fucked it is not only to watch someone else lose their mind as they're dying (and knowing that one day that's going to be me, and that's the future I have to look forward to), but also get slapped with traumatic flashbacks from my own medical procedures. It's almost funny in a twisted way how the simple smell of saline solution and cleaning alcohol can fuck a guy up. Istg I've never had my surgery scars impossibly itch in the worst way possible except when I'm around it in recovery wings.
Honestly I wish none of it affected me. Not to be selfish on main or anything, I'm just sick of wasting wasting what precious little time I have on pissing and moaning over things no one can change.
Maybe I'll be in a better headspace to watch EAPS later tomorrow or something. Hopefully. I despise the idea of trauma having any control over what I do and don't do in my life, and if there's one thing anyone should know about me, it's that I live on pure spite. Nothing will stop me istg, even if it kills me. People identify as male or female, and then you have me, certified stubborn little shit supreme
P.S. If you know who I am, don't bother trying to contact me outside of this post. I'm making it 'anonomus' bc I don't want ppl pussy footing around with sympathy or any of that bs. It's not wanted, and I hate the simple concept of being treated differently just bc I'm medically fucked. I can't stand ppl throwing pity parties for me. I ain't got time for that shit. literally. Also I already have hives and a migraine from crying while venting, don't make me relive these emotions please
Anyway, this is your local lunatic signing off. I've got fanfiction to write before I die, and I refuse to kneel to fate until all 3 of my main projects are finished - Winter

I’m not going to say I’ve seen them all; but I’ve seen most of the good shows on TV concerning investigations and that sort of thing. I should preface this by saying that I think all cop shows are lame at first; you’re not supposed to like the show, you’re supposed to fall in love with the characters. A really good plot line; however, (Criminal Minds) definitely helps put the nail in the coffin for a really good show, and I don’t know about you; but when the characters’ lives mesh with the plot line and the danger is real, (or new,) it makes the show that much more exciting. At least to me it does, I’m sure someone somewhere hated Criminal Minds, I was disgusted when I saw it on television after work one day, and denied being the one to have put it on before I left; but the facts easily overwhelmed me and I gave it a shot. So why on earth would LAPD be so over the top generic that it made me call out in anger over the fact that it sucked so bad to “watch something else” and cry out in my half awake state of sleepiness; the truth!
Out of all the cop drama tv shows on television reppin their city, why is Los Angeles the most clichée, generic, and annoying of the genre ?? One would think that as the epicenter of media entertainment in basically the world, the greater Los Angeles area should boast the best “cop show” of them all. There are actually too many reasons this could be, to really start guessing; but, the question which always seems to irritate me is the one laying 50% below the surface.. was it intentional?
The reasons for the obvious are simple and quick to go through, for example: the target audience is larger in families with younger children who watch after the nine to five rush, and therefore LAPD is quite sanitary looking in terms of explosions and gore making it not only child friendly but as pseudo-realistic as possible, ie. “Hollywood got money bro!” Which we all know is only true because of skill and not actual purchasing power; but I digress. The audio is obviously meant for those who are in a happy mood and have no mind, (did that come out how I meant it to come out? God they’re gonna kill me for thinking soon enough.. ugh,) sitting at home clapping their hands like at the ballgame waiting for the commercials to end. While this may paint the picturesque picture of what families look like On the silver screen, we can’t actually be sure it’s the media’s agenda to turn the average civilian family into puppets.. or can we? And lastly I’ll just throw in the fact that my other complaint was please watch something that doesn’t invlolve the use of the words “you’re going to jail” so many different and clever ways, when I have court on Thursday for a misdemeanor, thank you.
So maybe I didn’t give it enough time?
The more interesting aspect now plays out now that I get that garbage out of my head and start thinking.. say it is intentionally that bad, we have a more recent pressing issue that isn’t quite one hundred percent taken care of, and of course Hollywood is on the side of the BLM and Defund the police movement. I mean they are aren’t they, why wouldn’t they be? So then of course they would make their cops look cheesy in the face of the public, right?
Too simple.
There has to be more substance than that to something this deep. It doesn’t even sound like a good cover for trying to do the movement a justice. As easily as I dismissed it, is as easily as most should; which is why you can safely hold on to it and file it away until we return.
All BLM aside, in order to really support a movement, you have to make it seem like it’s a silly suggestion in order to really get your point across. “BLM? nah man of course we support that, that’s crazy you would even suggest such a thing..” but under the surface he looks calm and ready.. (‘sorry’)
The next thing I do is try to get into the hypotheticals; because I obviously lost them after that second half of edible I just ate and need to actually try to use my brain now. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it at that point right? Remind me not to write when I’m stoned.
The whole reason I started this post was because there have been a few lame attempts to make cops look badass in a realistic way. And I say lame; because they’re simply missing that production quality we’ve come to know and love. I’m only thinking of two anyways, Cops, obviously.. lame because it looked underbudget; but is basically a cult classic at this point, which is always impressive. Superjail; lame because, like all shows on Atlantean networks they tend to be purposefully over the top, (thank you🙏) and therefore written for minorities in cults and not an every home staple. (I’m thinking specifically adult swim at this point and not the entire Cartoon Network, btw.. but for real though, adults are a minority, lol!)
I don’t fancy myself a writer or anything; but if I were to put my finger on what’s missing, I’d have to say that’s a show that shows the truth without the hassle, and still puts that spin on some bad ass characters. Immediately I think Oakland’s Finest. Now that’s a show I’d watch. There’re two types of cops in Oakland, of course the rookies and the bullies; but give them attitudes and styles from other parts of the country and I think we’ve got something fierce. (Again, that needs explaining I’m not sure I can do all at once..)
If you’re not familiar with at least Oakland PD, Tampa PD, and Sherrif Joe Arpaio, then I will try my hardest to explain real quick without dumbing it down for the five people who read my posts; but, I’m thinking that cops are seen as badass in television shows because they do badass shit and beat up bad guys. Any show that tries to make office work and paper pushing look “bad” “ass” just ends up with another comedy that no one will take seriously as a “Cop” “Show”.. (Brooklyn Nine Nine?) there’s still plenty missing I’ve noticed, and the first part I think of; is beat work, the insane amount of time not working that’s still considered police work. That’s the part of f the job that makes a cop truly look bad ass: how they behave when they are not working. It’s when you see how an officer sits in his vehicle when he drives or rides shotgun, that truly defines his or her character, and isn’t that the entire point of the job, to have integrity in the face of adversity?
I’ve received my fair share of ass kickings by police officers. That’s what I want to see. Where is the video of me getting pepper sprayed?
I’m not talking about when cops are off duty either; but, if you’ve ever been arrested, you know that there’s a process: cuff suspect and place in car, make sure all conversations leading to arrest are documented, drive to check in spot, take suspect to jail. I’ve gone straight to jail one or two times and I don’t know if it’s just me; or what.. but cops are easy to talk to, and even if you don’t say anything, they don’t seem to give a shit what You hear Them say. Now that’s bad ass, not the watered down version of what we see on tv now with shows that mimic Hawaii Five-0. (I only use that one as a reference; because, it’s probably the only show that really has boasting rights to be so family oriented as a law enforcement show, and if you don’t believe me, try to live on Maui, or Hawaii for more than a month.)
So a cop show about dudes with badges being dicks and beating up civilians?
Now can you see why I’m thinking the Black Lives Matter and Defund the Police movement? My show would actually get the attention of the masses, and they’d watch it. Not only that, I loves our boys, so I wouldn’t try to make them look bad or mean, and let’s be real here, not gonna actually beat up civilians who don’t deserve it; but I’d like to tip that edge of comedy just a little darker to get it to be.. oh gosh, for lack of better words, actually “bad” “ass”
Tip that edge of comedy that seems to creep in on average sitcoms, and make the show darker. Less about the actual crimes committed and having to solve them; more emphasis on the actualities of modern police work, without the realities of the classics making the show seem less of a show, and making it seem like more of an adventure. The point is to be something new, to make it seem like there’s more to the job; because there is. To make that hidden and boring aspect, seem fulfilling and eventful. (Gosh, I wish there was a show that made my job feel like that.) so where would I start?
Start on two officers beating up a white guy and going to jail. They are partners and no one was killed but the laws are way more strict because of the movement. Officers will always get special privileges dude to the judicial system, so they are fast tracked to prison and of course stay together, damn has anyone been? I’ve got a lot of material to draw on.. too much to start here..

I’m well aware of the fact that, as a queer person, I consume media differently than the average viewer. Sometimes I think y’all get too caught up in the details of like how a light shines on something or how a shirt pocket is crinkled (I love you all, but please go drink some water and close your computer every now and then). So I like to check myself by asking my family and coworkers, especially the hetero ones, their opinions or takeaways from different shows.
I did this with Stranger Things and I’m here to reassure you guys that the general audience, the ones that don’t care anything about ships or the silly little romances on the show, finds Mike’s speech to El off. They can see that Mike is acting weird this season.
My coworker, unprompted from me, said something along the lines of Mike’s problem and why he couldn’t say I love you has to be more than him thinking he’s just a nerd and El doesn’t need him. She pointed out how attentive Mike was to Will’s feelings in seasons one and two, and how this season it’s like he’s just checked out and oblivious. She saw the inconsistencies in Mike’s confession and how it directly contradicted the way he acted in season one.
Now, like I said, this was all unprompted by me and she doesn’t know I ship byler. She doesn’t even know I’m queer. I just asked about where she thought the characters were going and she said well obviously they have to work to resolve whatever is going on with Will and Mike. She said it seemed like El was uninterested in Mike at the end, with bigger problems to face. She had a hard time accepting that Will is gay and in love with Mike while watching vol 1, but came back swinging in vol 2 completely on board. I literally had to talk her through it when she made comments like “well we already have Robin, they wouldn’t make another character gay” and “he’s so young how does he know all that yet.” And before you ask yes, she’s a cis het white boomer.
So, if even she can see something is going on, none of you are delusional. She agreed that Will deserves a win and that they have made it tough not to be sympathetic towards his character because they’ve just shown him struggling and suffering for four seasons, with very little reward. The GA is on board for this story because that’s how the Duffers have written it. They want you to see Will’s side of things and bring it to the forefront as he takes on a key role in season five. She is not the only person that’s said this to me. My mom, another cis het white boomer, has voiced the same thoughts.
The GA is going to be dissatisfied if they don’t resolve the issues with Mike, Will and Eleven. They made it the entire plot for their storylines, particularly Will and Mike, so it’s not going to go unresolved. I think I’ve honestly heard more feedback about Mike acting weird than about Will being gay, which is quite frankly surprising. But I just wanted to provide some reassurance that the GA does see it. You’re not crazy. Whether that ends up with Mike being in love with Will, too, remains to be seen. That’s in the Duffers hands, but just going by what we have seen on screen, their story is unresolved.

frozen hearts.
| summary | Aria and Yuta bonding, feat. some less than pleasant discoveries.
| word count | 2.5k
| warnings | bad parenting (?), neglect
| era | circa. 2014 through 2017
Underneath a frozen river, the water will keep running in a steady flow. It doesn’t care for the layer of ice blocking it out from the world; it has a sole purpose. To continue flowing, to continue rushing down the side of the slight hill. Rivers don’t stop for a cold snap.
Similarly, frozen hearts still beat despite their layer of black ice covering the outer shell. They are hard, and cold to the touch - almost unbearable to carry for any length of time - but they have warm blood rushing through them regardless.
The thing is, about frozen hearts, is one cannot be born cold.
Each life begins flooded with light and love and happiness and warmth; it fills up each corner of your vision and everything is bright, bright, bright.
Like a pot slowly brought to the boil, or the temperature slowly dropped degree by degree - you’ll freeze without even knowing it.
Aria likes to believe that’s what happened, at least. She can’t resent them, not as much as her head begs her too, for her heart pounds against her chest screaming no.
Too many fond memories filed away to be taken out and gazed upon with a bittersweet smile curling her lips makes for an impossible task when asked to burn the bridge connecting them.
Part of her was reluctant to let go, because she still needed them, still wanted their care and their comfort like she had once received in mountains. Like a drug, it had been snatched away from her without warning, and now she was an addict weaning herself off of it, trying to ignore the pang in her chest.
The other part, was scared. Terrified even. Scared that should she burn the bridge, should she cut the final chord, that they wouldn’t even feel it at all.
Call her cruel, but Aria wanted them to feel the pain she did when the bonds were snapped.
But how can a frozen heart burn?
A new perspective.
A new perspective can change the world, said her mother.
A new perspective is all that you need to change a catastrophe into something else entirely. Aria wasn’t sure if it was her that she was talking to, or if she was trying to convince herself.
Packed onto a plane with her abhorrently bright suitcase and a handful of folded papers to he name, Aria was given a pat on the back by her father, and a one-armed hug by her mother.
“You behave now, you hear me? Make your parents proud of you.” Her mother stood up straighter, brushing the non-existent dust from Aria’s shoulders.
Aria nodded, letting her parents take a final once over before she was packed onto a plane, with a red sticker slapped onto her suitcase.
Unaccompanied Minor.
It felt like a tag, and Aria could feel the eyes following her around the airport as she just barely managed to navigate her way to her gate and onto the plane.
At the gate, she fumbled with the folded papers in her small hands, and yelped when two of them slid out onto the ground and fluttered open.
Tucked inside one paper slip was her airplane ticket, the words INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA printed in bold across the top.
The airport hostess smiled kindly at the young girl, crouching down beside her to help collect the scattered things.
“And where would you be off to? Are you meeting your parents?” She asked, smoothing out the creases in her skirt as she scanned Aria’s ticket through and the light flickered green momentarily.
Aria shook her head. Her parents lived in Dublin.
“Aria, don’t be ridiculous. You have a full career ahead of you where you are right now, why would you throw all that away for a silly little dream?” Her mother sighed lightly.
“You’d never make it as a singer - I just don’t think you have it in you, darling.” She shuffled closer to Aria, tucking the girl under her arm. “Let’s stop daydreaming, hm? You have an early practice tomorrow, you need to get some proper sleep before that.”
Moving past the questioning woman, Aria took back her ticket from the extended hand. “I’m going to become a singer.”
Aria knew she was small.
She was an inch short of average height, and normally it wouldn’t bother her but when surrounded by a group of boys all going through the various stages of puberty at once, it became glaringly obvious that she was, in fact, quite short.
Kicking her toe at the floor of the practice room, she scoffed slightly. Stupid teenage boys and their stupid growth spurts and their stupid long legs and their stupid voice cracks.
They’d recorded the same segment of the song four times, because one of the trainees kept shattering his voice box anytime he went above a middle C.
Now, nearing ten minutes to twelve, the others had packed themselves away and left with a goodbye called over their shoulder - leaving Aria to pace the spring boarded floor mindlessly.
“Akari?”
Aria jolted slightly, whipping around to face the doorway from which a boy was hanging from.
“Yuta-san! Oh, hello!” Aria bowed a little shakily, startled from her own thoughts.
Yuta moved through the doorway into the practice room. He scanned around, frowning when he only saw Aria alone in the room. “Are you here alone?”
Aria nodded. “The others, they wanted to go home but I needed to stay so I told them it was okay.”
“The others?”
“My team,” She explained. “I’m training with the boys right now, and we’re meant to be putting together a piece for the evaluation next month.”
He stepped forward. “You’re training with, Hyunjae’s group? Why?”
Aria shrugged. “I don’t know either. They just told me to come here now instead of the other practice room, so I did.”
Yuta still looked confused, but Aria spun the topic of conversation around before he had the chance to ask another question. “It’s late, Yuta-san, shouldn’t you be at home?”
He blinked once, shaking his head lightly and looking back at Aria. “I could ask you the same thing. It’s dark outside, I’ll walk you back.”
“Oh no it’s okay!” She rushed to protest. “I used to walk home at night a lot, I’m okay with the dark now.”
Yuta bit the inside of his cheek with how fast he turned. “They leave you here alone a lot?” His face had taken on an incredulous look, and his eyes had a dark tinge.
“No no, that’s not what I meant,” Aria waved her hands about. God this was a mess. “Back home, I used to walk home after training. So I’m careful but the dark doesn’t scare me.” She emphasized home, not wanting an angry Yuta to come after Hyunjae in the morning.
It really was okay...
“Well the thought of you alone in the dark scares me.” Yuta said with finality, walking to the wall and picking up Aria’s jacket from the ground. “C’mon, it’s not getting any brighter.”
“You know, you said something. Years ago, and I’ve always meant to ask you what you meant but I never got the chance to.”
Aria flipped over on the bed, lying on her stomach with one eye open as she peered over at Yuta. The laptop with a film paused was perched precariously on the edge of the bed, and was beginning to slide off the duvet just as he went to grab it.
His fingers curled around the screen right before it fell off entirely, saving it from a broken spine.
Aria giggled. “Nice save.”
Yuta smiled, and pushed the now closed laptop towards the head of the bed where it would be out of harms way. Hopefully.
Not willing to drop the topic just yet, he sat up and put his hands on his knees. “You said something about walking home, that you were used to doing it in the dark.”
Aria hummed, half asleep with the warmth of the room. She’d wrapped herself in a blanket earlier on and it had kept her toasty - but now the warm air was slowly making her drowsy. “My parents didn’t really have time, so I just. Walked.”
“Your parents didn’t have time?”
“To collect me. From the ice rink, I mean.”
Yuta’s lips parted, but the words died on his tongue. His head tilted in confusion. “How old were you?”
“Mm, ten?”
“Ten?!”
Aria giggled, swatting at him and missing by a mile. “Don’t say it like that, it was fine! It was a ten minute walk, I wasn’t going to die.”
Yuta’s eyebrows were nearly touching at this point. “Your parents, made a ten year old girl walk home in the dark, what, twice a week?”
“Three times. I had morning practice three times a week, and evening practice three times a week.”
“You were ten?”
“Mhm.”
Yuta sat back. “What, were you training for the Olympics or something?” He joked, a half smile finding it’s way onto his lips.
“Mhm.”
The smile fell. “What?”
“That’s what my father told me. H’said, I was going to the Olympics to make them proud.”
“That’s, nice I guess-”
“To repay what they gave me.” She finished.
Yuta’s relaxed demeanor had disappeared entirely, and now he was staring in shock and slight trepidation at the sleepy girl lying on his bed. She had moved closer in the duration of their conversation, and was close to having her head pillowed in his lap.
“What did you say, Akari?” His voice was soft, hiding a more concerned undertone.
Aria whined, shaking her head. “No, don’t wanna talk about this. M’tired, m’going to sleep.”
“Akari no, two more minutes.”
“Goodnight.”
“Akari,” Yuta patted her arm, pulling her up gently. “Two more minutes, then I promise you can go to sleep.”
She groaned, turning to plant her fact in the blanket beneath her. “What, what is it?”
“Do you -” Yuta started then stopped. “Did you like ice skating?”
“I was good at it.”
“That’s not what I was asking.”
Aria rolled over, throwing an arm over face as she eyed Yuta suspiciously. “Okay, you’re acting weird. Stop acting weird.”
“I’m not acting weird!” He protested.
“Yes you are! You’re making me feel like I’ve done something wrong, stop it.”
Yuta sighed, moving to lay beside her and wrapping an arm around her waist. “Okay, I’m sorry. You haven’t done something wrong, don’t worry.”
“Then what’s with the bloody interrogation?” Aria’s voice was ladened with sleepy frustration.
“I just...”
“You just...”
Yuta pinched her arm. “Don’t mock me.”
“I wouldn’t have to if you could string a sentence together.”
Yuta let his thoughts gather, collecting them together.
It wasn’t weird, was it? A lot of kids felt a responsibility towards their parents, wanted to repay them for taking care of them, that wasn’t unusual. But on the other hand, it was normally the child who decided to take on that burden, they were rarely instructed to do so by their parents themselves.
Come to think of it, he doesn’t remember a single time where Aria has mentioned her parents; not at holidays, not during promotions. He doesn’t remember her ever stepping out to take a call from them.
Had Aria spoken about her parents at all? It wasn’t a thing he would have otherwise taken notice of, but suddenly Yuta was wracking his memory, trying to find a single time where Aria had mentioned her parents, spoken about them.
Yuta didn’t know why he was so worried about this. If there was a problem, surely she would have come to him? Come to someone?
Regardless of the logic telling him that, yes, everything was okay, there was a sinking feeling settling in the bottom of his stomach.
When asked about her family, Aria had always said NCT. Said that, NCT was her family; her home.
“Akari, when was the last time you spoke to your parents?”
Aria rolled her neck to ease the growing crick. She was still burrowed beneath the blanket, and Yuta’s hug was only pushing her deeper into a comforting sleep. “Last month, why?”
“What did you talk about?” He pressed.
“There was a problem with my VISA. Some of the adoption papers got mixed up or the name change wasn’t filed right or something.” Aria mumbled the words into the duvet. “Can I go to sleep now?”
Yuta didn’t respond.
“Yuta?”
Aria lifted her head, blinking blearily at the older boy. “You look like you’re going to be sick.”
Yuta was not going to be sick. It was just a lot to process. Yeah.
“You’re adopted?”
“You didn’t know?”
He spluttered lightly, “You never told me!”
“It’s not exactly a secret! Any article written about me has something about my adoptive parents written in there. ‘The heroic couple who gave a young girl a fighting chance~’” Aria snorted through her nose.
Yuta’s head was reeling. Aria was adopted. That was fine. Nothing wrong there.
But something still wasn’t sitting right with him.
“Is that what you ‘owe them’? The fact that they adopted you?”
“The orphanage I was in was being closed down - I think I was going to be moved to a group home, but the week before it shut, my parents adopted me. It seems fair that I’d owe them something for that, right?”
“No?” Yuta let out a winded chuckle, eyes wide. “Akari that’s not, how adoption works?”
“Sure it is. And anyway, I was good at ice skating. It’s not a big deal.” Aria rolled over back to her stomach with finality, clearly trying to signify an end to the conversation.
Yuta wasn’t done. He had finalized on what it was that wasn’t sitting right.
“You speak Japanese. I thought you - did your parents speak Japanese?”
Aria hummed. “No, I took lessons. They said it was good for the media - it changed their perception of me, I think. Made me more appealing.” The words were mechanical, and not her own.
“What does that even mean?!” Yuta’s voice was raised now, the boy sitting up.
It was like Aria was being treated like a show horse, trained in a few tricks and then sold on. What kind of people -
“Yuta, please.” Aria’s voice was soft, and her eyes were barely open. “Please, I just want to go to sleep. M’tired, you can ask me about this tomorrow, okay?”
He sat back, mollified. “Yeah. Yeah, sorry. You want to stay here, or?”
Aria snuggled deeper into the covers in lieu of an answer.
Yuta ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah. Okay, that’s. That’s fine. Goodnight, Akari.”
Aria’s phone lit up from where the girl had tossed it earlier, making a small ping. He looked over momentarily, catching the two small notifications before the screen faded to black again.

chapter 4 / chapter 6
-----
You were hyper-aware of the new way the team was looking at you as you entered the conference room. You shot a very anxious glance up towards Aaron, grateful for the very brief- but soft- glance he gave you before the business side of him took over again. You could feel the ghost of his hand hovering over that protective spot on your back again as he led you up towards the table.
It felt like your eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets, upon seeing the seemingly endless piles of photos in front of you. Your brain was struggling to process everything that was laid out in front of you and you felt your heart rate start to pick up; seeing it in person was worse than anything your mind had created in the drive here.
“Y/N.”
Your eyes shot up to meet the voice and you saw Spencer looking down at you with a look that was just on the edge of pity. “We tried to sort the pictures into piles of time relativity. Would you be able to go through them and help us create a firmer timeline?”
You nodded at that, vaguely aware of Aaron pulling a chair out behind you. You gladly slid down into it. Seeing Emily start to pick up one pile and push them towards you made you nervously laugh, the stress of the moment and how uncomfortable you felt forcing it out. When the entire team gave you a weird look you said, “Sorry, it just reminded me of last time.”
You gently picked up the stack of photos, trying to hold them as lightly as possible. The knowledge that the unsub had packaged these himself sent a shiver down your spine. You knew it was silly, but you somehow felt that by touching the photos you were somehow also touching the remnants of the unsub.
The first stack you easily dated as around four years ago, just from your hair; you’d drastically changed it for a role. You thumbed through the photos and could feel the knots in your stomach growing even tighter. Most of the photos were blurry and relatively distant from you, as if the unsub was still getting comfortable with what he was doing.
“This was four years ago, I had to change my hair for a role and I’ve never had it like that before or again.” You said quietly, pushing the pile back to Emily.
She nodded, giving you a gracious smile before pushing the next pile towards you. Your face fell immediately; something the team equated to how much more personal these set of photos seemed to be. You fanned the stack out in front of you. There weren’t many, as if even the unsub could recognize the inappropriate- ha!- nature of capturing you like this. In all of them you looked worn down, as if a cloud was following you everywhere you went.
“This was about two years ago.” You said flatly. It took a moment, but you could see everyone connect the dots in their head and suddenly the room felt very small.
Thankfully, the next pile was rather average and you guessed that this was just an ‘extra’ pile of photos that didn’t really seem to fit into a cohesive timeframe. As you scanned over them, one caught your eye and you pulled it a bit closer to you. You pointed a finger at the sign behind you.
“This is an exclusive club house, it’s difficult to get into. Security’s intense and everyone that enters has to sign in.” You informed the team. JJ reached out and grabbed the photo, putting it to the side for later.
You turned your attention back to the pile, making sure to give each photo a proper amount of attention, desperate to notice something useful.
“This one,” you said, pulling a blurry photo of yourself out of the pile. You were moving too fast for the camera to properly capture you, but you recognized the outfit. “I was wearing this the day Officer Reynolds told me you all were coming, isn’t this the outside of the station?” You said quietly.
JJ moved that photo to the ‘save for later’ pile as well. You gently re-stacked the pile and passed it towards Emily, waiting for the next one.
You watched as Emily seemed to be literally holding her tongue as she pushed the next pile towards you, a certain playful glint in her eyes. Once you were able to look at it, you couldn’t help but snort. You could feel Aaron tense up besides you, but you could find the humor in it. The ‘Aaron’ pile.
You fanned the stack out like you had done with the others, giving special attention to the details behind you. These were much more difficult to place and a much smaller pile, considering how careful the two of you had been.
“These must’ve been in DC?” You questioned, not really expecting an answer. You looked up towards Aaron, raising an eyebrow as if to give him the opportunity to share his thoughts. “Whenever he came to LA, I had an iron grip on our security but it was a whole different field in DC-”
Your sentence fell flat as your eyes went wide, nearly surging out of your seat up towards Aaron. He gave you a worried look, unable to place the sudden anxiety that had taken over you. “What about Jack?” You asked worriedly, “if he knows about you he must’ve found out about Ja-”
Aaron stopped you, putting a very gentle hand on the top of your shoulder, “He’s okay, I promise.” He said, using his hand to lightly push you back into a seated position. You nodded at that, eyes still wide, but your body seemed to deflate, the tension slowly leaving you.
The rest of the team was quiet, recognizing the personal nature of the interaction. But it was impossible for them not to notice the way your bodies reacted to each other. The way your body’s natural response to a stressor had been to move closer to him and the way he angled himself in a protective stance around you near simultaneously.
Emily pushed the final pile in front of you and you couldn’t help the corners of your lips pull up in a soft smile. You fanned out the stack of photos, taking a good look at all of them. They all seemed to either be promo photos or film photos of your time filming Mamma Mia in Greece.
“This is definitely from Greece. But some of these are definitely promo photos, it’s why I’m ‘posing’ in a few of them.” You said, pushing out one that visually made your point.
“What about this one? It feels a lot more intimate than a promotional piece.” Emily asked, pulling one out from the stack. In it, you were standing on the dock, face close to the camera. You had a big smile on your face and your thumbs up.
“On set, we had a handful of little disposable cameras that everyone could use.”
“Do you have any memory of who owned the cameras?”
“I…,” you paused, eyebrows scrunched tightly in thought, “I don’t know. The studio distributed all the photos after the movie came out. They’re pretty public at this point, it was five years ago.” You said weakly, feeling really disappointed in your lack of help. “I’m sorry.” You added.
Morgan stepped up closer to the table. “Don’t be okay? Now we know that the unsub has connections in Hollywood and we know he must be wealthy enough to fly to DC on a whim if he thought you were there. That helps narrow things down.” He assured you.
“Are there any specific photographers that you’ve noticed? Or any guy you feel like you’ve seen too many times and it’s no longer a coincidence?” Spencer asked.
You shook your head quickly. “I’m really used to cameras flashing in my face.” You said impishly. “I can remember a lot of fans that I meet, but if it’s just someone behind a camera I don’t think I’d really notice it at all.”
You felt Aaron move away from you and towards the computer at the end of the table. He clicked a few buttons and suddenly a woman's face popped up on the screen. You recognized her immediately from all the stories and photos you’d seen. Penelope.
Aaron brought the computer closer to where you were and her mouth dropped open for the second time today.
“Oh my god! Hi! Wow! I am, I am such a fan. I just-, you’re always so-”
“Garcia.” Aaron interjected but you raised your hand at him, giving him a ‘shoo’ gesture. The rest of the team had to stifle their laughter.
“Hi, Penelope right? I’ve heard so much about you.” You said sweetly, leaning a bit closer to the camera.
“Wow! Okay, I can’t believe this is-”
“Garcia, I need you to pull up visitor logs from a clubhouse that Y/N used to visit. I want you to cross reference it with other visitor logs of recent film sets she’s been on and her housing development. She’ll be able to give you a more comprehensive list.” Aaron interjected, and this time you let him.
You turned back to the screen, giving Garcia another smile. “The clubhouse is called Royal Blue, the picture couldn’t have been more than…, I think three years ago? But I’m not sure.”
“Alright…, okay the visitor logs seem to be locked tight, but never too tight for me. What are some of those movie sets?”
“The earliest photo is what? Five years ago?” You asked, looking around at the agents for approval. “Yeah, five years. So Mamma Mia, to start, Little Women. I’m working on Emma right now.” You droned, listing various movie sets you’d worked on in the past five years.
“Oh my god! I have so many questions about Mamma Mia. Like what was it-,” Garcia’s question trailed off as she caught sight of Hotch giving her a firm stare from behind you. “Right sorry, alright. I will break into the clubhouse and cross reference all of these lists to see if anyone comes up more than once. It was so nice meeting you, I hope we get to-. Alright, hanging up now!” Garcia said in a rushed voice. You watched her click a button on her end and the screen went black.
You leaned back into your chair, staring up at the rest of the team . “So…,” you said, drawing out the word, “what now?”
-----
“What are you doing?” Aaron’s asked, voice coming out from behind you.
You comically froze, hand just short of picking your keys up from the table. You slowly turned to face him, straightening your tote bag over your shoulder. “Oh! There you are, I was just on my way to come find you.” You said lightly, trying to diffuse some of the tension in the room. Aaron didn’t say anything, waiting for you to go on. “Johnny and I have plans tonight.” You said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world
On your part, you’d already forgotten about the whole ‘I’m on a date’ aspect on your earlier phone call with Aaron. In your mind, there wasn’t anything inherently suspicious about you going to spend time with him in the evening.
Aaron was viewing the entire situation in a very different light. When he had first come around the corner, he noticed how nice you looked. When the two of you had finally returned to your place you immediately went up to your room, disappearing for quite some time. He had originally thought maybe you were upset, the cognitive interview hadn’t revealed anything and even though he knew you didn’t really believe in their accuracy, he also knew how badly you wanted to be of ‘use’ for the case.
In your time upstairs, you had changed your outfit and styled your hair just enough to give it that ‘unstyled-styled’ look. It’s not like you were glammed out or anything, the only reason you’d put on a nice outfit was on the off chance you were photographed- hopefully not by the unsub-, on your way into Johnny’s apartment.
“And what is it that you’re supposed to be doing?” Aaron asked, trying to keep his voice as nonchalant as possible.
“Um, nothing much,” You said with an awkward laugh, when he was still looking at you expectantly you tilted your head. “I’m supposed to go to his place and we’re gonna run lines for the scenes we’re filming this week.” You explained.
“I can’t endorse you going out at night. Especially to someone’s home that we don’t have eyes on.” Aaron said firmly.
You rolled your eyes at that, picking up your keys. “Johnny’s fine, he’s been in the same place as me when nearly all the bodies were discovered.” You argued, putting one hand on your hip.
“With the recent development in the cases, I can’t let you do this.”
You started to walk towards him, intending to go around him. “Aaron-”
His hand shot out and gently grabbed you by the arm, stopping you from getting past him.
“Hey!-”
“Please,” he said, staring you straight in the eyes. “Don’t go.”
Your mouth fell open slightly in a mild form of shock. ‘We’re just running lines, I really need-”
“I’ll do it with you.” Aaron interjected hurriedly. “We’ve done it before, I’m not too bad at it, huh?” He said teasingly.
You pondered that for a minute. You and Aaron had run lines together plenty of times in the past, it was always something you got a kick out of, seeing Aaron try and morph into whatever character he was reading for. And while it wouldn’t be as productive as running them with your actual co-star, you reasoned it’d still be good enough. And as much as you hated to admit it, Aaron probably had a point about you not going out, especially in the evening.
“Fine. I just need to go call Johnny and tell him something came up.” You huffed, pretending to be more annoyed than you were.
“Here,” you said, reaching into your bag and pulling out your script, “I already have most of my lines memorized, I’ll just need you to fill in if I miss any. I have a pink sticky note denoting the scene we were going to start with. You’re reading as Knightely. I’ll meet you in the living room, alright?” You said, pushing the script into his hands as you walked around him towards the kitchen, pulling your phone out at the same time.
----
“No, I’m just saying I think it’d be more believable or whatever if we did a few more like nonchalant meals before like, running errands together or something, ya know?” You said lazily into the phone, holding it between your ear and shoulder as you used your hands to mix up a drink for yourself. Out of the corner of your eye you caught sight of the Dalmore. You reached out with one hand and carefully pulled it down, still remembering exactly how Aaron liked to take a drink.
“What meal really screams ‘we’re dating’? Dinner? That’s like the longest meal of the day, that’s gotta show some sort of commitment.” Johnny asked.
“Hm…,” you droned, “well we just had a lunch. If we want to kick it into high gear, we should do breakfast. Perfect ‘just spent the night’ remedy.” You said with a snort.
Aaron cleared his throat behind you and the sound made you jump. You pulled the phone away from your ear and saw you’d been blabbering for nearly half an hour.
‘Oh. Sorry.’ You mouthed to Aaron, before pulling the phone back to your ear. “Hey Johnny gotta go, but we’ll figure it out later! Yeah…, for sure, bye!” You hung up and placed your phone on the counter. Then you grabbed the drink you had poured for him, holding it out.
“It’s Dalmore.” You said plainly.
“I’m working.” He responded.
You rolled your eyes at that and held it out more aggressively. “Take it.”
You watched happily as he begrudgingly took it out of your hand, though you knew it wasn’t too difficult for him. You picked up your own glass and tucked your phone into the waistband of your pants. “Ready? Sorry, got carried away.”
While the two of you walked back into your living room, it was obvious something was bothering Aaron. You briefly wondered if something had developed in the case that he wasn’t telling you.
‘What is it?” You asked.
He looked down at you, confused. “What is what?”
“Don’t play dumb, you have a tell.” You explained, stopping to look up at him.
“I do not have a tell.” Hotch replied annoyedly.
“Yes you do.”
“No, I don’t.”
“If you want to be a baby about it, fine you don’t have a tell. Tell me what’s wrong anyway.”
“I’m trying to understand why you lied about not having a boyfriend nor seeing anyone recently. We’ll need to fully vet Johnny and look into his files, even if you don’t see it becoming serious.” Aaron near spat.
You snorted. “What do you mean lied?”
“You very clearly told me you weren’t seeing anyone, yet today has proven those claims to be false.”
“I know that sometimes, I like to be a huge pain but I’m serious, what are you talking about? I’m not seeing anyone.”
“Your co-star, Johnny? You told me you were on a date with him today. I just heard you on the phone make plans to stay with him overnight. I saw the pictures of-”
“Stop! Oh my god, I can’t believe you actually believed that.” You said, unable to hold back the laughter that bubbled out of you.
“Believed it? You’re the only who told me!”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have assumed you read through the lines. Johnny and I have been going on publicity dates. We’re just friends.”
“What were you supposed to be doing tonight then?”
“We were legitimately going to run lines. Maybe get ice cream, we’re trying to determine the best ice cream in LA.”
That’d explain the outfit, Aaron thought.
“And the phone call I just heard?”
“We were debating which meal screams ‘dating’. He thinks it’s dinner. I think it’s breakfast, ya know, cause it implies you spent the night.”
“Why didn’t you tell me that, before.”
“Don’t you remember when I had kinda the same thing with Timothee during Little Women? They made us hang out a bunch so the tabloids could just do their thing. I just assumed you’d fill in the blanks.”
Aaron was staring at you as if you had two heads. It was almost like you could see the gears turning in that head of his. Internally, he was more than embarrassed for how upset he’d gotten over the idea of you with someone else.
When it seemed that Aaron had nothing else to say, you started to walk again, not stopping until you were both back in your living room. You plopped down in ‘your spot’ on the couch, playfully patting the space a few cushions down that Aaron typically sat in.
“Crack open that script, I hope you looked through it. If you’re making me stay home, you better be useful!” You said pleasantly, trying to change the atmosphere into something more playful.
Aaron awkwardly sat himself down on the couch next to you, picking the script back up. As you watched him flip the script open and further acquaint himself with the lines you couldn’t help but feel a sharp pang in your chest. It was such an unavoidable reminder of the way the two of you used to run lines together when you were still dating. You had learned early on that Aaron best showed his affection through acts of service and he actually wasn’t that bad at delivering a line. Since the two of you were rarely together in person- it’s not like you’d let him waste a visit with you building a shelf or running an errand-, running lines with you was the easiest way for him to feel useful.
-----
Four Years Ago
“Okay Jack, you ready?” You asked, smiling down at the young boy standing across from you. He was dressed up in his winter clothes, despite the blazing heat of the summer. You and Aaron had tried to talk him out of it, but he demanded it’d be the only way for him to fully get into character. And who were you two to deny him? The sweet boy nodded, barely being able to contain his excitement as he bounced up and down on his feet.
“Alright, places everyone!” You yelled out, holding the diy paper clapperboard Jack had made for you. You held it out from your body and did a very exaggerated clapping motion. “Action!” You said, quickly throwing the clapperboard to the couch.
“Carrots!” Jack said, his voice more than enthusiastic for the role.
“Huh?” You said, heavily overselling your voice and reaction. Even with the one simple word, Jack was already in giggles, struggling to keep it together.
He leaned in closer to you, standing up on his tiptoes. “Behind you!”
“Oh! Right, excuse me.” You said, stepping to the side and gesturing to the ‘carrots’ behind you.
You made your voice really low to play the next part. “Woh, a real howler in July, yea? Where ever could it be coming from?” You asked, placing your chin in between your thumb and pointer finger.
Jack kept giggling at your ‘deep’ voice, he held his ‘script’ up to his face to read his next line. “The North Mountain.”
You jokingly ran a hand in front of your face, signaling a character switch. “North Mountain.” You stage whispered. You ran your hand in front of your face again, going serious. “That’ll be forty.” You said, holding your hand out with a ‘gimme’ gesture.
Jack smacked your hand gently to ‘give you’ the money. But after his face fell ever so slightly. “Can we skip to when Daddy gets to come in??” He asked, giving you those big eyes you couldn’t possibly say no to.
You stood back, putting your weight on your back leg with one hand on your hip. “Hmm.., I think that could be arranged.” You reached over to grab the clapperboard. “Alright everyone! Back to places, but let’s start at ‘Hi everyone’, okay?”
Jack nodded excitingly and turned back to where he knew Aaron was standing, partially hidden by the hallway. “Places daddy!” He urged, pointing to where he should come stand.
Aaron came out from around the corner and you quickly covered your mouth with your hand, trying to hold in the laughter. Aaron had a big white hat on his head and had let Jack put a small orange dot on his nose. You and Jack had definitely double teamed poor Aaron, dragging him into your little ‘movie game’ as Jack liked to call it. The three of you had started doing this a few months ago, Jack loved ‘running lines’ with you and you were more than happy to oblige him. It had started when a sleepy Jack had stumbled into the living room one night when he couldn’t sleep and he saw you and Aaron running lines for one of your other movies. Jack had taken to it so much you ended up ‘hiring’ him to help you with your more child friendly roles.
“Alright, alright. Quiet on set!” You said, making a big deal of you bringing your index finger up to your lips in a ‘shush’ motion. “Action!”
“Hi everyone. I’m Olaf. And I like warm hugs.” Aaron recited robotically , very clear that he was reading directly from the paper. You smacked your hand back over your mouth, unable to control the giggles. Once you started laughing, Jack fell into his own fit of laughter; both of you fueled off the others amusement.
Of course, when you finally pulled yourself back together, a quick look at the way Aaron was standing with fake annoyance across his face and his arms crossed tightly against his chest sent you back into fits of laughter.
“Are you two done?” Aaron asked, no true malice in his voice.
It was rare that the three of you all got to spend time together. He’d been wary of introducing you to Jack. It wasn’t really a ‘you’ thing, but it was more of how Jack would be able to deal with it. There were the typical worries, what if you and Jack didn’t get along? Or what if you two did get along really well but then you and Aaron broke up and it hurt him even further? While you never intended to try and replace his ‘mom’, you still worried that your chaotic schedule would somehow hurt him, skewing his perception of yet another ‘parental’ figure. Not to mention the issues with him being able to keep your identity and presence in his life a secret; he wouldn’t even be able to tell people like Uncle Rossi that his dad was seeing someone.
But now, you’d been with Aaron for over two years. And Jack had known about you for about a year now. And everything had been going perfect. Jack was a stellar secret keeper, the unfortunate events of his childhood maturing him faster than any child deserved and he was able to fully understand the importance of the situation. The two of you had taken to each other quite quickly and every night the three of you would have a ‘bedtime’ call; even on the nights when Aaron was busy with a case you’d still call Jack on your own. You loved spoiling him with whatever hot new toy was popular among kids his age or getting him special early copies of movies before they came out. Aaron used to get on you about it, saying it wasn’t necessary, but you argued it was the most necessary thing in the world.
And now here the three of you were. Nestled away in Aaron’s apartment in DC. You had just flown in after wrapping up a shoot abroad and were just in time for the start of summer. Even though your career was at a seemingly new high, you had managed to secure a relatively empty summer. After long consideration and planning you and Aaron decided it’d be a nice treat for Jack to go spend a month or so with you in LA. You’d consulted heavily with many of your friends who kept their children completely hidden from the spotlight and had hired an airtight security team to assist you the entire time. Aaron was supposed to come out when he could, but you were all aware of how turbulent his poor schedule could be. Schedule permitting, you all would spend the next three days at Aaron’s apartment before you and Jack took off.
“Daddy! You sound like a robot.” Jack said, scolding Aaron. His voice brought you out of your thoughts and you looked down at him with a big smile.
“Daddy’s just no good at this huh?” You asked, shaking your head. “He’s no match for our talent, Jack!”
“This is really hot.” Jack said, holding up his arms. He must’ve been sweating his butt off in all those winter layers.
“You’re kidding me! I wonder who could’ve seen that coming.” You said sarcastically, reaching over to pull off his big hat and zip down the first of multiple jackets he put on. “I’ve heard that ice cream cools you down…,”
“Ice cream!’ Jack exclaimed, his eyes lighting up. He didn’t even look to his father for ‘permission’, knowing by now you had the most sway in the house.
“Go put on some normal clothes okay? Wouldn’t be fun if you passed out in your ice cream bowl, huh?” You told him, ruffling his hair before he dipped under your arm, making a mad dash for his room.
“He hasn’t even had lunch yet, you know that right?” Aaron asked, giving you a fake stern look as he walked over to where you were standing.
You rolled your eyes at that, reaching up to snatch the white hat off his head, letting your arms fall loosely around his neck. “Does it upset you that I’m always the cool one?” You asked teasingly, reaching up on your tiptoes to press the gentlest kiss on his lips.
He gave you one of his small smiles, reaching down to press a second kiss to your lips. “How was your flight in?” He asked, one of his hands wrapping protectively around your waist as the other one found its way by your hair, gently stroking down it the way you liked.
You let your head relax against his touch and pretended to think for a moment. Instead of answering you reached up again, pressing your lips against his, pressing yourself closer to him. You both thought you could stay this way forever; it being the first time you saw each other, in person, in nearly two months.
“Gross!” Jack’s voice seemingly cut through the two of you. Aaron was the one to pull away first, quietly laughing so only you could hear.
“Later.” He promised in a whisper.
You loosened your grip on him, turning to face Jack. “Oh Jack! Funny seeing you here, ice cream, right?”
-----
Present Day.
“Page 103, right?” He asked, skipping to the bright pink sticky note you had used as a place marker.
You jolted out of your memories, feeling the heat rise up your neck as you prayed it wasn’t too obvious you had just completely zoned out.
“Yep!” You squeaked out, “page 103, line 19, you start.” You said, waving your hands.
“And I do envy him, Emma. In one respect he is the object of my enemy, you will not ask me why, you are, you are determined, I see, to have no curiosity but I cannot be wise-” He started, keeping his eyes near glued to the page.
You frowned, shaking your head a bit. “Stand up.” You ordered, already getting to your feet.
“Excuse me?” Aaron asked.
“Stand up,” you repeated, motioning upwards with your palms. “This,” you said, motioning between the two of you, “doesn’t feel right if we’re seated, we’re supposed to move around in this scene, it’s supposed to be painful.” You explained.
He slowly stood up, looking at you for permission to start again.
“From where you left off, please.”
“I must tell you, Emma, what you will not ask! Though I may wish it unsaid the next moment-”
“So do not speak it.” You cut in. “If you wish to speak to me, as a friend or to ask my opinion as a friend I will hear whatever you like.”
“As a friend, Emma. That I fear is a word, tell me Emma. Have I no chance of ever succeeding?” He asked, looking up at you for further approval, you nodded and he continued. “My dearest Emma, my dearest, you will always be my dearest most beloved Emma, tell me at once. I cannot make speeches, if I, if I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more-”
“Let’s do a different part, yeah?” You interrupted, voice incredibly tight. You ducked from his gaze, reaching to bring your glass to your lips.
“Isn’t this the scene you have to practice?” Aaron asked, raising his brow at you.
“It doesn’t matter,” you replied, taking a long sip, “any practice as the character will be helpful.”
“If this is the one that’s troubling you, we should go over it.” He pressed.
“Page 56, start at line 9.” You ordered, throwing back the rest of your glass. “Read it over, I’ll be back.”
Before you could fully turn to go and refill your glass, Aaron lunged forward and grabbed your arm, pulling you towards him. The sudden movement caused you to stumble, throwing your hands out to steady yourself against his chest.
“You’ve been drinking a lot.” He stated, repositioning his grip on your arm.
“Am I not allowed to have a drink or two in my own home?” You challenged.
“What are you running away from?” Aaron asked, his voice so gentle it made your knees weak.
“You.” You whispered, after a long pause. You looked up at him with sad eyes and only found confusion in his. “I can’t, I-, don’t you see how funny it is? Your character is desperate for mine to be with and my character is the one to deny yours.”
Your confession pulled sharply on his heart. He couldn’t bring himself to say anything, not sure there were any words to appropriately apologize for how he had treated you.
“Why didn’t you ever call?” You asked, voice so quiet he almost didn’t hear you.
“I, I-” He stuttered, unable to think of an answer fast enough.
“I waited for weeks,” you said, looking up at him with a look that nearly brought him to his knees. “I waited so long and you never called.”
He brushed the hair out of your face, letting his hand fall gently against your cheek. His thumb caught a stray tear that had started to fall, softly brushing it away. “I don’t know.” He responded, his voice as quiet as your. “I don’t know, you didn’t deserve that.”
You pressed your face into his hand, closing your eyes as you felt more tears managing to sneak past you. He was finally admitting words you had dreamed of hearing for years, but yet you were unable to find any joy in them.
“You didn’t deserve that.” He repeated, sliding his hand towards the back of your head, pulling you firmly against his chest, while his other arm wrapped tightly around your waist. You let your body relax into his, slowly bringing your own arms up loosely around his neck.
You felt him gently press the faintest of kisses to the top of your head. “I’m so sorry angel.” He mumbled into your hair.
You pulled your head out from under him, looking up at him with big eyes. The two of you were silent, basking in each other's presence. Your eyes flickered down to his lips multiple times; something he duly picked up on. Just as you began to push up on your toes, nearly pressing your lips to his, eyes half closed in anticipation, his phone rang out.
You froze, falling back onto your heels with a small sigh. “Answer it, I’m getting a refill.” You said, pulling yourself out of his grasp. He gave you an uncertain look, as if he wanted to pull you back in and ignore the call completely.
You wagged a finger in front of him, shaking your head. In on fluid movement, you grabbed your glass and nearly ran out of the room
-----
It took you ten minutes to calm yourself down and another five to hype yourself up to return to your living room. And that was after you had made yourself a new drink.
When you entered the living room, Aaron’s back was to you; still locked on the phone. The tension was clear in his shoulders and your eyes drifted down to his free hand that you knew would be clenched in a fist. It was.
“Thank you Garcia, tell the team we’ll be there soon.” He said, pulling the phone away from his ear and hanging up.
“Aaron?” You asked.
He rolled his shoulders back, trying to loosen some of the tension from his shoulders for your benefit. He slowly turned back towards you, his face pulled in frustration.
“LAPD just reported another body.”

I wish you would write a fic where Xiaojiao and Xiaotian try to convince Red Son to build a pillowfort with them for M A X I M U M S N U G G L I N E S S
I hope the wait for this was worth it, I was very happy to get such a nice prompt!
"You have to be joking," Red Son said with a groan as he looked upon the veritable mountain of pillows and blankets and a few scattered chairs. At some points in the pile he saw what appeared to be strings of lights and stuffed animals. "You really expect me to help you build a... what did you call it? Pillow fortress?"
"Pillow fort!" Xiaojiao corrected with a wide smile and a bounce in her step as she dropped even more pillows onto the pile. There were so many pillows. Who owned this many pillows? "Well, it's more a blanket fort with the chairs, but that's just for structural integrity. It's going to be way more pillow than anything else! And yes, we do."
"What is the point of a pillow fort?" Red asked in a tone of genuine confusion and frustration at his lack of understanding. "It's just... pillows! And blankets and chairs and-and stuff!" He waves his arms wildly in the general direction of the mountain of mentioned stuff that Xiaojiao had seemingly finally deemed enough. "What does it do?"
"Be comfy!" Was her answer, almost as perky as ever but with a soft undertone to it that matched her smile. Red could tell she really wanted him to do this with them. She only sounded like that when she was serious and concerned, and the fact that he acknowledged his recognition of this was testament to how much he had gotten to know the dragon before him. "It's just... comfy, Red. You build it and you sit in it and you enjoy the feeling of being in a pillow fort."
"That sounds-" He wanted to say stupid, but he stopped himself short. Xiaojiao seemed so excited to do this, and she and Xiaotian had been so insistent on including him in things they enjoyed. And he had not disliked most of them so far. If he was under threat of destruction he might have even admitted he found some of them... fun. So instead he sighed before continuing with "- ...like something you would think I'd enjoy."
Xiaojiao's smile softened even more at this for just a moment. Then there was a knock at the door and she smiled her usual wide and jubilant smile as she opened it to welcome the other member of their little trio.
"Sorry I'm late," Xiaotian apologized as he rushed in, bags and a cooler in his arms. "There was a lot of traffic and the store I usually go to didn't have that snack you asked me to grab, but I found it at another one so we're all good!" He paused, looking over at Red Son with a half smile. "We, uh... are all good, right? You're gonna..."
"I suppose if it will make you both satisfied in my progress on 'learning to chill out already'," Red Son said in a half mocking tone, earning a snorting giggle from Xiaojiao. "Then yes. I will help you build your Pillow Fortress."
"Pillow fort," Xiaotian and Xiaojiao corrected in unison.
"It is Pillow Foretress or Pillow Nothing."
~
It took a good minute for the duo to finally gather themselves back after that. Red Son's completely serious tone with his final declaration sent that both into a frenzy of giggles and full on laughter, and Red almost stormed off before Xiaotian insisted they were only laughing because the sentence itself with ludicrous and they weren’t laughing at him.
Red Son eventually conceded that, yes... that was quite the ludicrously bizarre thing to insist on. But the two did their model best to call their creation a Pillow Foretress (with more bit down giggles every time it was stated). And it was... enjoyable enough.
There wasn't much to it. They set chairs up in a very large circle. Placed blankets under and over them. Surrounded them in the absolutely mind boggling amount of pillows, making sure to make three little sections for each of them to sit in. There were stuffed animals in places that were almost deliberately haphazard, and Red realized he recognized one as Xiaotian's little monkey from his own apartment.
Xiaojiao had taken the lights on strings, a mix of soft pink and regular lights, and draped them around the chairs before pulling in her laptop on a little lap desk and some comics and other items. Xiaotian in turn set out what he had brought, a cooler full of drinks and buns and sandwiches and sweet and savory snacks from presumably a convenience store.
"Alright, climb on in Red!" Xiaojiao said with a gesture.
Red Son stared for a moment, looking at the two of them in confusion. "This... doesn't look finished."
"It's not," Xiaotian admitted, mimicking Xiaojiao's gesture. "But trust us, this will be way cooler seeing it from the inside!"
Instead of arguing, Red sighed and did as asked, finding it silly that he was sitting on the floor surrounded by pillows and chairs and blankets and-
They finally took a large blanket that Red Son swore could cover an entire average sized room floor span and draped it over him and the rest of the fort, moving the chairs so the feet holding down most of the corners, pulling some up to let in fresh air and leaving the front loose entirely. The top dipped a bit in the middle and Red realized the blanket was far thicker than he had realized. Then the lights went out.
Red Son had relatively good night vision, but the room they were in deep inside the Long estate had no windows. That not that it mattered, it was likely past dark by now regardless. Even to him it was pitch black, only the light of Xiaojiao's phone screen providing any illumination. He almost wondered if this was it. If this was some kind of prank and the two had finally grown tired of him and they were going to leave him here or dump water over him through the blanket or... or something!
Until the little lights inside the fort came on.
And it felt completely different in the dim light. It was... soft. Warm. Welcoming even. Like he was in a world entirely made of just these blankets and pillows and nothing else was outside of it. He finally took the time to realize how plush and soft the blanket and pillows under him were. How the pink light made the seams in the top blanket give off a sheen that he realized were woven bits of metallic thread.
"Whoa..." was all he could say as Xiaojiao and Xiaotian lifted the loose flap of the front of the blanket to join him. He felt completely out of his element, unsure of how to even react now.
"Comfy, right?" Xiaojiao asked, and he only nodded in reply as Xiaotian held out two things to him. His little stuffed monkey and a bar of spicy chocolate. Flame decal and hot peppers branding the wrapper. He took them both without question as the two made themselves comfortable next to him. Each pressed into one side slightly despite the room in the pillow fort. "Tonight we're just going to stay in here in our Pillow Fortress and relax. Stay awake, sleep, it doesn't matter. Just. Be comfy with us, Red?"
The last part was clearly a question. Both of them looked at him for a moment, waiting for him to react. He didn't for a moment, looking down at the items in his hands before moving the stuffed monkey to the crook of his arm and unwrapping the chocolate bar and taking a bite.
It was sweet. Bitter. Rich. And had almost enough spicy heat for him.
"... sure."
Xiaojiao smiled wide again and opened up her laptop to find that one show he told her he liked. The one about how different things were manufactured. He thought that they would both find it boring when he told them about it, but it seemed now that their interest in watching it with him had been genuine. In time they all laid down on their stomachs or sides to watch, drinks and snacks being eaten up by the minute.
Xiaotian nodded off first, though he lasted longer than Red Son thought he would. He seemed to have actually enjoyed the episode about vinyl disks in particular. And Red Son supposed that after a long day of work and his short personal training session he was bound to be more tired than the other two of them.
Xiaojiao lasted much longer, but it didn't surprise him that even she had to nod off eventually She loved every episode that had anything remotely mechanical.
Soon it was just Red Son and his show and the soft glow of the lights as he laid between the duo that brought him into a trio of sorts. Both pressed into his sides in some way (though Xiaotian had kind of starfished his way into his back and an arm laid over Red). And he gently tossed the little stuffed monkey over to Xiaotian when he started to reach around for something, smiling when the other held tight to his prize.
Red Son didn't think he'd... ever felt this comfortable. At least not in many centuries. And it didn't take him long to follow his friends into slumber with a soft, almost imperceptible rumbling purr in his chest.
He hoped they got to do this again one day.

Good Enough || s.r
pairing: spencer reid x fem!reader
warnings: overthinking | cursing | low mood | insecurities | lmk if I have missed anything ♡
word count: 1.9k
a/n: thank you for the love on my first fic, I hope this one loves up to expectations. i pretty much just wrote this in order to comfort my own insecurities so maybe other people can relate. my requests will always be open ♡
That evening your phone had gone off every couple of minutes, blasting your obnoxious ringtone over and over again; yet it was still on your kitchen counter where you left it that morning. You refused to pick it up, not wanting to look at the numerous text messages and missed calls that were on the home page. It was Sunday and your boyfriend was due to return from work, but over the last three days that he was gone, you had fallen into an awfully big hole of overthinking.
Seventy-two hours was a long time to have your brain constantly telling you that you weren’t good enough for the man that you called your boyfriend, Spencer Reid. Take away the few hours that you were sleeping in between, the last three days have been nothing but torture for you. Hence, the reason that you were ignoring his phone calls. He had just finished a case with the FBI, the last thing he had to deal with was you being low and insecure. It had taken six months for these feelings to start surfacing within your mind but once you started shedding the tears, there was no going back.
Spencer sighed in frustration, his phone indicating that he was running on low battery. He quickly clicked into your name again, watching the phone dial your number before the screen went completely black. Spencer hissed a number of curse words that gained the attention of his male companion, who was sitting closest to him in the bullpen. Derek’s brows creased together and he dropped the pen that he was playing with to focus his attention on the young doctor.
“You ok, kid?” He asked, turning in his office chair to face Spencer’s desk.
Spencer looked up from his dead phone that he tossed by his pile of files, his curls hanging loosely over his face. His mouth opened and closed for a minute, reluctant to get advice from Derek before he shrugged it off. “Nothing.” He simply replied.
Derek hummed in acknowledgement, “Very rarely do I hear Dr. Reid curse, but if you would rather me get Penelope or JJ to question you, I can do that.”
“Please don’t do that,” The skinny brunette whined softly, weighing out the options in his head before deciding to trust Derek on this one. “It’s Y/N. She hasn’t been answering my calls all day.”
“Ah, girl problems.” Derek teased, his pearl whites gleaming under the bright lights in the bullpen.
Spencer groaned, standing up from his desk. “Forget about it.” He snapped, starting to pack up his belongings to head home for the night.
“Kid, I’m joking. Look, you’ve been gone for three days. Just pop by her apartment on your way home, okay?” Derek suggested which earned a grimace from Spencer, “Bring flowers, tell her you missed her.”
“I did miss her.” Spencer sighed, his hand brushing his hair from his face.
“Exactly. You have been going out for six months, it shouldn’t be strange just dropping by.”
“Um, okay… Thanks, Derek.” The younger boy replied, forcing a shy smile in his direction.
Spencer started walking out of the combined offices before Derek’s voice halted him, he looked over his shoulder. “Behave, you minx.” This only resulted in Spencer rolling his eyes and stalking out of the room towards the elevators. On the way to your place, his thoughts began to linger, maybe it was a bad idea just to show up. He shouldn’t be this nervous going to be his girlfriend’s house but deep down, he knew there was something wrong. You always replied to his messages and never once sent his calls to voicemail. His thoughts started to jump to different conclusions, did he do something wrong and not realize it?
The sudden silence was oddly irking you; your phone had stopped ringing and you didn’t notice that you were taking comfort from your ringtone until it was gone. You couldn’t say you blamed Spencer for giving up trying to contact you, it wasn’t your intention on keeping him on the ropes all day. It was just that you weren’t sure that you were going to be able to answer the phone and pretend like everything was fine. You couldn’t pretend anymore that you lived up to his standard; he was the most intelligent man you have ever met, with a number of PhDs and BAs, and you just about got your BA degree. It was silly for you to compare yourself to an actual genius but it was more so the fact that he deserved someone that he could hold an actual factual and statistical conversation with; not someone that had to research nearly everything that he brought up.
The empty feeling in your stomach from not eating all day came alive and you climbed out of bed, catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. Your eyes were puffed and your hair was a bird’s nest, the fact that overthinking caused you to look and feel like this made you even sicker. You had just reached your kitchen door when the sound of your doorbell blasted around the apartment, grimacing you knew exactly who it was going to be. You weren’t expecting anyone else to appear at your door at eleven in the evening.
You slowly walked to the door, your sock-clad feet sliding across the wooden floors. You peeked through the peephole and your heart soared with the sight of an exhausted looking Spencer standing there, a beautiful bouquet of flowers in his grasp.
Opening the door, you hid half of your body with it but worry immediately covered Spencer’s expression. “Hi…” He said, his voice soft and he tried to step forward but you didn’t budge the door, “What’s wrong?”
“Spence, I just want to be alone for a little while.” You whispered, avoiding his begging honey-brown eyes that were drooping. His heart tugged at the sound of your voice croaking, and it confirmed his theory that you had spent hours upon hours crying. “I’m sorry-” You attempted to close the door but Spencer stuck his foot in the way and you sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to let this drop.
“I can’t leave here knowing that you’re hurting. Let me in, talk to me.” Spencer begged, and you couldn’t deny him entry anymore. It killed you seeing him looking so worried. As soon as Spencer stepped foot into your apartment, he wrapped his arms around you. The flowers brushed the back of your head and you collapsed into his embrace. He was warm and you were thankful that he was wearing a grey sweater, it felt soft against your skin and when you breathed in his scent of coffee and cotton detergent, you felt grounded again. His lips pecked into the side of your head, a hand coming up to caress your cheek as he pulled away. “Why are you crying, princess?”
“I’m not crying now…” You replied, a pout evident on your face.
“Why were you crying?” Spencer corrected himself, no hint of the worry lessening on his features.
“I… It’s nothing.”
“Clearly it is something. Tell me.” Spencer pushed, his thumb rubbing up and down your cheek gently. You sighed, your eyes closing which resulted in a tear escaping down your cheeks, running onto his fingers. “Oh, baby.”
“Spence…” You started, reaching to cover his hand with yours and you peeled it off your face. “I have spent the last three days thinking and thinking and thinking…”
“About what?” Spencer wrapped his fingers around yours, a feeling of heaviness erupting in his stomach.
“You deserve someone so much better than me-”
“Don’t start, Y/N, please…” Spencer’s head dropped, sadness radiating from the pair of you.
“No, no, let me finish. Please.” You begged, he nodded in response and watched as you took a shaking breath in. The rant that you had created in the shower two days ago flowed off your tongue in one breath. “You deserve someone that matches your personality more than I do, someone that reads more books or watches old films in different languages. You need someone to challenge you in an intellectual way and I… I just can’t do that. I’m average when it comes to general knowledge, hell, I don’t even know what my IQ is. A… And I don’t want you to wake up one morning bored and regretting ever starting this.”
Spencer whimpered softly, stepping closer to your shaking body. You avoided eye contact again but he reached behind you to place the flowers on the locker and he cupped your face with both of his hands. “Look at me.” He snapped softly, it was forceful but filled with love. He used his thumb to wipe the fresh tears away.
“Spence…”
“No. Listen to me. The last six months have been the happiest days of my life.” You tried to object but he shushed you, “Listen to me.” He repeated, squeezing your face slightly and you sunk into his touch again. His lips were trembling but they remained their pink shade similar to the tint in his cheeks. “I don’t want someone to challenge me, I challenge myself enough. I want someone that makes me laugh, makes me happy, makes me feel like a kid again. You bring out a side to me I didn’t know even existed, you brought light back into my life and I enjoy teaching you things. I don’t want you to recite the whole Bible for me, I don’t need that. I just need you, I need you being happy and yourself because I love you and you are too good for me.” Spencer whispered the last sentence, and he sucked in a breath.
“You’ve never said that before.” You replied, your heart beating rapidly against your chest.
“I never thought I’d make you feel that you’re were not good enough.”
Your heart sank at his words, regret cursing through your veins. “It wasn’t you, Spence. It was all up there.” You muttered, pointing to your head and for the first time that evening, Spencer shot you one of his smiles. The one that showed that he understood.
“Just promise me one thing.”
“Anything.” You replied, wrapping your arms around his torso.
Spencer smiled at the gesture and brought his lips down to yours, connecting them gently. Your eyes fluttered closed, embracing every erupting feeling that he was setting off. His hand slid into your mess of hair, bringing your closer and he deepened the kiss. His tongue danced around yours, and you were melting into him with every passing second. Just as a moan escaped passed your lips, Spencer pulled away. “Talk to me if you ever feel like this again.”
You nodded in response and he was happy with that. Spencer untangled himself from you and picked the flowers back up, he walked deeper into your apartment but you stood there, your eyes following his every move. “Spencer,” You called out before he disappeared into the kitchen, he turned to look at you, his eyes sparkling and he waited for you to speak, “I love you too.”
The smile he returned sent your heart soaring and he shook his head, a chuckle erupting from his stomach. “I know.”
