how we fell apart

read it on ao3: how we fell apart
summary: Clutching the handle of your suitcase, you knew in your heart that Aaron Hotchner wasn't coming. There would be no dramatic sprint to find you at the plane's gate, no out of breath declaration of love or promises to never let you walk away from him again. Aaron Hotchner had made his decision, cemented his fate. And now it was time for you to follow yours.
or, a glimpse into your college years alongside aaron hotchner, as the two of you maneuver a ‘will they/won’t they’ relationship.
prologue
july, 1992, seattle-tacoma international airport.
“Hi, you’ve reached Aaron Hotchner. I’m sorry I couldn’t get to the phone to take your call, please leave your name, number and a message and I’ll-,” You snapped your phone shut, tired of hearing the same voicemail recording over and over again.
He should be here by now.
The hands on your watch were mocking you, time taking you further and further away from the future you would have bet your life on the day before. Maybe, in his last-minute packing efforts he somehow managed to forget his phone. Or pack it so deep in his suitcase he had no chance of fishing it out. Maybe he was stuck in traffic, so stressed out by the sea of cars in front of him that the ringing of his phone didn’t even register in his mind. As hard as you tried to drown your worries with explanations and excuses, you knew the truth. Aaron Hotchner had never been late once in the whole four years you knew him. He never packed late for any trip, especially one that would relocate him across the Atlantic Ocean. He always picked up the phone, especially when he saw your name spread across the small screen.
He should be here by now.
Your backpack felt heavy on your shoulders and you were sure the handle of your suitcase had firmly indented itself on your palm from how hard you were clutching it. You had to move, you knew that. You had been standing outside one of the many entrances to the airport for over an hour at this point. Wait any longer and you wouldn’t get through security in time to make your flight.
But, he was supposed to go through security with you. He was supposed to sit next to you on the plane and squeeze your hand during takeoff; you’d both pretend it was solely for your benefit, but you both knew he was still getting over his fear of flying. You were supposed to both struggle to get comfortable in the too small airplane seats, make stupid jokes over airplane food.
A shaky hand dialed his number one more time. One more time. It went to voicemail, again, and you wondered how many times you had called him at this point, dozens, easily. Instead of hanging up, you decided to leave a message; unbeknownst to both of you, this would be the last time you ever ‘spoke’.
“Aaron,” you started with a deep breath, “I’m still outside, where are you? You’re never late, you’re-,” you voice fell off into silence, struggling to figure out what you wanted to say. “I’m not mad, I just need to know what’s going on. We can get you another flight, we can figure it out,” you were pleading at this point, almost embarrassed with how desperate your tone was. “Just tell me you’re okay.”
Aaron Hotchner wasn’t coming to the airport.
You stayed outside of the gate for as long as you could, desperately searching for his face in the sea of people. Hoping, you would see him running towards you out of breath. That you would get some cliche, declaration of love at the gates of the plane. That he would promise you he would never let you go without even a word, that he wouldn’t leave you, not like this. The two of you would board the plane, hand in hand, scared of the future, but comforted that whatever was to come, you would deal with together.
As the airline workers made the final call for boarding, you finally accepted that he wasn’t coming. Aaron Hotchner had made his choice, cemented his future. A future that didn’t have you in it. And now it was time for you to go chase yours.

concept for my open stories, ive been struggling with finding the energy to actually put words to page and make them full stories. ive been thinking about releasing the rest of ‘in the stars’ in like ‘headcannon, bullet point’ format. theyd probably be cut up into smaller ‘chapters’ and it would give me the ability to 1) give yall the rest of the story and 2) space to one day come back and write it fully out.
i might even do this with some of my other open fics as well, i have so many ideas for them still and i want to just put them out in the world. thoughts lol??

not to get overly specific for sake of privacy but i was deeply affected by multiple instances of gun violence that happened in the past few weeks and dealing with that type of trauma/emotions/feelings/etc. while still being a full time student with two jobs has been a lot to say the least. im still “active” and here and love all of yall so much i just have very little motivation and drive to be writing/interacting
