Grateful Dead - Drums and Space: Percussion and Ambient Sound (1966-1995)
"Drums/Space is my religion!" It could only be Steve Silberman, author/activist/head on the first episode of the latest season of Jesse Jarnow's Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast. The new season delves into the 1978 era, when that experimental/abstract/totally psychedelic section of a Dead show became more or less codified. Sadly, just as I wrapped up the episode last week, I learned that Silberman had passed away. A major loss!
"I hated when I got tapes that cut out Drums/Space," Steve says. "I hated when people said, 'Oh, that's when I go to the bathroom.'" So, in tribute, here's a 10-hour megamix of nothing but Drums/Space (or at least Drums/Space-y situations) that spans virtually the Grateful Dead's entire onstage career. Steve's gone, but the music never stops.

"Silberman said he 'always' flinched to see media stories about autism presented primarily in terms of their cost to society, for example 'an estimated fifty million dollars a year.' He asked: 'what is the cost of a human life? It’s inestimable and no one knows what someone’s potential is going to be, particularly when that someone is a child.'”

As we reflect upon the life and death of the wonderful Steve Silberman (Dec 23, 1957 – August 28, 2024), let's remember this message he posted a year ago this month:
"When I die, please don't say that I've crossed over into the spirit realm, gone to the Other Side, moved on to a better place, rejoined my ancestors, or any other of those comforting fables. Just selfishly or selflessly use my own impermanence to WAKE UP to your own."

It wasn't me... it was... my evil twin brother! This week, V and Emily look at a somewhat different kind of fandom by delving into the long, long history of As The World Turns, a daytime soap opera that ran for over 50 years. ATWT made television history in 2007 when they featured the first M/M kiss, and first positively-portrayed M/M relationship, on American daytime television, but of course, Luke/Noah were not without drama. Melodrama. This star-studded episode features green-card marriages, murder attempts, doctor-blackmailing, Meg Ryan, and Spanish prisons. What more could you want from your stories?
This Week In Fandom History is a fandom-centric podcast that tells you… what happened this week in fandom history!

Suddenly every machine stopped at once And the monitors beeped the last time Hundreds of thousands of hospital beds And all of them empty but mine
Well, I was lying down with my feet in the air Completely unable to move The bed was misshapen, and awkward and tall And clearly intended for you
You checked yourself out when you put me to bed And tore that old band off your wrist But you came back to see me for a minute or less And left me your ring in my fist
My hair started growing, my face became yours My femur was breaking in half The sensation was scissors and too much to scream So instead, I just started to laugh
