Im staying off of social media today, I remember the attacks. I was in high school. I saw the second tower collapse live on tv.
I remember the entire state of Minnesota being terrified because al quidah released a list of their next targets and the Mall of America was in the top 3.
I remember people online saying it was Afghanistan and bin laden, and being confused when we declared war on Iraq. I remember my best friend at the time’s family telling me sadame was a bully and we needed to take him down. We watched the first attack live on tv. I remember crying when the missiles launched.
I remember the sudden, terrifying switch to people believing torture is good and necessary. I remember when torture porn became a very popular movie genre.
I remember how terrified immigrants were. An old woman got jumped by a gang of young men. A Sikh man was shot in the head for wearing his turban. Hate crimes were rampant.
I remember actively losing my rights in the name of “freedom.” In 2005, I remember reading about how the bush administration knew something was going to happen and actively let it, just so they could gain more control over American people.
I remember how much useless garbage was being shoved down our throats in the name of the dead. “You are not a true patriot unless you buy this commemorative 9/11 glassware set for 3 installments of $19.99!”
I remember the government plastering pictures of firefighters and cops in hero campaigns. I remember John Stewart fighting for medical care for first responders, because the government abandoned them.
I remember people being told their entire lives that 9/11 was the single worst American tragedy of modern history. I remember, during covid, people becoming outraged over how many people were dying. I saw “thousands of 9/11s” referenced often. I saw people realize how little their governments actually care about their safety.
Ive been seeing a lot of gen z turning 9/11 into memes, and honestly, I don’t blame them. Gen Z didn’t make 9/11 a joke, the fucking government did.
Today I am going to keep to myself and mourn and hold people in my heart. Sending my prayers and love to the countless souls who have died on and because of 9/11.

I had my graduation today and it was good until uhm something racist? happened to me
You need to know that my parents are from india and but I was born and raised in germany.
Now uhm I have a lot of experience with people who made jokes about me. For example they‘d ask where my red indian dot is. This red dot is also called „Bindi“ and In Hinduism, the bindi is associated with the "third eye" or the sixth chakra, known as the Ajna chakra. It is believed to protect against demons or bad luck and enhance spiritual awareness.
But I‘m not Hindu I‘m Sikh and now matter how hard I’m trying to explain the people that I don‘t wear the bindi because it isn’t a part of my religion,they still won‘t get it. Also some turkish people made fun of the name of my religion because the word „Sikh“ sounds exactly like the turkish word for „fucking“ or something like that idk. And when I was younger some boys would always laugh when I‘d tell about my religion and they would make fun of me.
Now back to my graduation do you know this one indian meme song? (the one dingedingedinge sound?) Well when they called me to get my report card (I was the last one) someone started to play this song and now my day is ruined. I really tried not to cry even former friends of mine giggled.They all laugh and did nothing and I felt super uncomfortable. Like it started so well why did they have to ruin this for me?
I don‘t know who the person was but the person was 100% not in my class I have to see my classmates still 1 week and idk I feel more awkward then before i have zero clue what am I supposed to do :(
Do you may know what I can do? after holidays I‘m going to change the school which means I have to get to know new people and after all these bad experiences that I had I‘m super scared to tell anyone where I‘m from or in what religion I believe. I‘m really this close to lie and say that I‘m from a different country instead of saying india

the people in the class laughing are awful and the fact they are your former friends makes my blood boil. they're racist pricks that don't deserve to even be in your presence babe
its one week and there might be some tension but remember that it is only one more week and then you never have to see them again. ideally, you would never see them from this day forward but its good you're getting away. its good to keep that mindset.
it is so important to remain true to yourself baby, i would like to think that this new school would have better people in it but you can never know. just be you, for everything that you are because your religion and your heritage are important to you, never ever change or lie bc racist arseholes get their way then and thats not great. scope out the school, catch the vibe, and gravitate towards those you feel are kind and will accept you for who you are.
you were born to shine as the person you are, never for someone you aren't. i truly hope everything goes well for you and if you ever need to rant or literally anything at all, my ask and pms are always open for you.

Alrighty sooo
Idk if anyone else has noticed this too but ever since Modi's come to power it's been IMPOSSIBLE to have a conversation and not bring up religion. So these are more like my comments on what I've heard in such circles.
Look. It's not a doubt that obviously Islamophobia and hinduphobia are both very real and serious problems. The Islamic extreme right and frankly the non-islamic extreme left tend to focus entirely on Islamophobia among Hindus and they entirely omit all the Muslim bigots. I genuinely can't stand for it cuz obviously very biased news.
Now here's the thing, Hindus are a majority and I completely stand with them when they say that being a majority does not benefit them in a manner where they're not oppressed. But what a lot of Hindus fail to realise is while they might not be benefitting in that sense, they do still benefit from it (I'm talking about the far right ones tho) cuz I mean whenever they're preaching hindutva and talking crap about Islam they like to bring up how they couldn't insult Muslims in a way that Muslims insult them like my brother in Christ you ARE that's literally what you're doing as we speak. Idk if this is making sense but I could elaborate on this if you'd like.
Now on the topic of my religion, and sikhophobia (yes that's a thing and us Sikhs are like the mr bean in the corn field meme waiting for the Hindu Muslim matter to get sorted so we can eventually bring up our issues as well). There's a common pattern of sikhophobia I've noticed in the Hindu extremists. They will look at all the sewa and all the 'the golden temple feeds 50000 people a day' sorta stuff and start talking about how sikhi is just a sect of Hinduism and then if you call them out for it (and this is one thing that gets on my nerves so bad) they'll start crying about how they're trying to be secular but apparently only Hindus need to be secular in this country (I'm sorry are u being secular for brownie points) but anyways they like to claim us as a sect of their own religion
BUT
But. The moment Sikhs protest or demand their rights (farmers' protest 2020) suddenly these very people start calling us khalistanis and terrorists
And this is not me giving my stance on khalistan, I know nothing about the Khalistanis to have an opinion but what I do know is that even protests that have nothing to do with Khalistan are shut down by extremists just cuz the major portion of protesters are Sikh and I really wish we talked about this

I'm not gonna reply to this with my opinions before researching it further but thank you, especially on the perspective on the discrimination you experience as sikhs 💜 although i will say this you're 100% right about it being impossible to have a conversation without bringing up religion in the modi era and it's exhausting

Hello the tumblr. It's me Liz from Twitter. This is awkward.
If you have a tumblr, it might be true that you also like awkward stuff.
I stole some memes today. By the time I got them, they were disconnected from their creators. If you know who made them, I'd be overjoyed to add credits.
Tumblrs alt text doesn't let you look at the picture while you're writing it. That's barbaric. I also discovered after posting this that I can't figure out how to read the alt text so I'm just going to describe the pictures in the body of the post. Tumblr alt text readers, I welcome your feedback.

I still had my LiveJournal in September 2001 . Those were the days when I torrented a lot of hardcore pornography on the computer my little boyfriend made for me.
Girls couldn't make computers then because being in frys was disgusting and we just never dealt with that.
The next meme had a harmful trope in it, and I didn't recognize it until I started writing about it, so we're going to skip that, but I think I'll still talk about it.
The meme I was looking at had a magic wish granting genie on it, and the genie was wearing a turban. Genies are appropriated from an Arabic tradition.
People who wear turbans are Sikh. Whole different cultures.

I'm mad that my primary source of information about racism is being systematically destroyed. I learn a lot from the people on Twitter.
