Do you have any personal perspective on Loki or Sigyn you’re willing to share?

Sigyn is "cool disaster-bisexual aunt who DIY's her house and grows weed in the backyard" while Loki is "Combine the energies of Betelgeuse, Jack Sparrow, and your average Loony Toon character and blend on high."

Message from Sigyn

"You can't always get or reach your desire through a straightforward way. Many times the detours are what allow you to learn and experience things that you wouldn't have otherwise, should you choose the fastest route.

When your Tower has fallen and you need to rebuild yourself, it takes patience and courage and determination. You may already know what window you want to put on your walls but if your walls haven't been built yet, you can't have your windows yet either, metaphorically speaking. I know it can get frustrating, demanding and stressful at times, especially when you want to move forward but your Ship is not ready for sailing yet and you feel stuck. But would you still leave and potentially sink your ship or would you work on it just a little longer to make it sturdy and ready for the journey ahead?

Even if you don't seem to be physically moving, spiritually and energetically you are moving faster than you can imagine. It just takes some time for the physical aspects to catch up to the non-physical.

Don't feel discouraged if your plans, ideas, goals or dreams seem to be out of reach for in your heart you have already grasped them - energetically they are and were yours the moment you claimed them. It just so happens that the physical world is a bit slow and you may face obstacles and detours but despite them you should always stick to your vision - that is if you are certain that that's what you truly want; then nothing can stand in your way of reaching it.

I hope this helps at least some of you who are going through similar situations. We know and see how much struggle you handle each and every day but this is what builds your resilience and character and what truly shows if you have faith in your dreams and yourself. On the other hand, please don't forget to have more fun - reaching your goals and dreams shouldn't feel like another obligation or duty. It's something that, even if you struggle as you commit to working on it, still has a sense of excitement and love in it, even if subtle, it's there.

If, however, there's no love or excitement at all, then you may have to reevaluate if this is something you truly want and ask yourself some questions to get a bit closer to Yourself and your true desires. Don't be afraid to acknowledge them - they are Yours, not your parents' or society's.

As an ending note - watch out for the butterflies - they send you encouragement, hope and faith to keep moving and believing. You too can fly. "

OK so re: my recent post about the spider above my altar; I just did a tarot reading with Loki asking what They needed to tell me and such, and They gave me some cards that indicated a new frienship/relationship was going to begin soon, so I asked if They meant a.. "human" relationship or a spiritual one, and they said spiritual so in conclusion Loki is trying to get me to work with another deity more lol

Hey Pagans who worship/work with Sigyn!

I did a quick one card reading for who (with my own self as a possibility) stuck the veiling thing in my head. It's not something I was really concerned about, more of a curious "just checking" thing

I drew the Queen of Cups. Which hit me as strange since it's not something I'd associate with myself or any deity I work with. The character on the card is a pop culture character commonly headcanoned to be hijabi so I wrote it as "probably my curiosity then" and moved on

But it hit me just now at the end of the day after a bit of browsing. The imagery and meaning of the queen of cups practically shouts Sigyn. I haven't worked with any of Loki's family except having a mini shrine for Jormugandr

Anyone who works with Her, do you have any advice on telling if I'm right? Or what to expect from Her?

Anyway, here’s my rant of the year. I sent it as a text to my sister first but ig it can go here too :/.

I’m sorry but Ragnarok most likely doesn’t even exist and if some 15 year old girl got drawn into Heathenry by watching marvel with her younger brother and now she wants to practice rokkatru???? Then??? Fuck??? Right??? The??? Fuck??? Off???

Yeah maybe it’s not historically documented but there are a few things that allude to the worship of Loki in the past. WAYYYYYYY before the poems about Ragnarok were even written.

Frankly, it’s nobodies business who anyone decides to worship other than the person worshipping. Second of all, even if Ragnarok DOES happen- Most of us will be fighting on Loki and Hel’s side anyway. I don’t know very many people that die in battle anymore. Obviously during wars, and across the sea. But here???? There are not many people felled by sword.

Third, Rokkatru is the worship of the beings that are neither Aesir or Vanir, but centered around Loki and his family. (Aka, Hel, Sigyn, Vali, Narfi, Fenrir, Angrboda, Jörmungandr) and the elements they represent.

Fourth, many people don’t take the myths LITERALLY. many think they are metaphors, or stories to explain things science couldn’t understand back then (see: Loki being the cause of earthquakes).

And here, at my fifth, and final point. I bring another FUCK OFF OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES RELIGIOUS PRACTICES, and continue with- Even if every single myth is literal in the MOST literal way. The Jotnar are still very, very powerful. And very much a part of the Norse pantheon. They are fierce and [sometimes] reckless, and unstoppable forces of nature[quite literally, if the myths are literal] and that seems like something worthy of worship, even if they do help bring Ragnarok to the aesir and vanir.

There are so many religions based PURELY on fear. And honestly? If people find relief in worshipping something that you think shouldn’t be worshipped- then find something else to talk about. Let people live their lives with whatever pieces of happiness they can find. Let them do that.

Sigyn UPG!

Oh my gosh you guys I had the most EXCEPTIONAL experience last night and I just have to share it all! And you know me, I’m not one to share this kind of personal stuff as much these days.

After scoping online for as much as I could about Sigyn and coming up with very little, I decided to leave an offering for her and actually invite her into my home to get to know her myself. And boy howdy did I get some UPG from that experience! Because so little is known about this goddess I’ve decided to talk about it.

Disclaimer: This is ALL UPG. The only thing we know about Sigyn in lore is that she’s Loki’s wife and that she held a bowl above his head to catch dripping snake venom until Ragnarok. That’s it. The following is derived from my experiences, and you can take it or leave it as you wish.

The best way to tell this is to tell it like a story, so please account for metaphor—this stuff didn’t LITERALLY happen. Let’s be smart here.

Anyways.

It began when I invited Sigyn into my home with an offering of chocolate-covered strawberries, which seemed to make the most sense out of what I had on hand. One of the first things she did when she arrived was express great approval for how much I was spoiling her husband, particularly honing in on the framed watercolor I made for Loki that I keep on his side of the altar.

She and Loki were both there, and a few things became obvious at once: Sigyn’s got a really bright energy to her, and she and Loki are MADLY in love. Given any opportunity Loki would sweep her off her feet, or dance with her, or carry her, as if to say, “Who’s the arm-burden now?”

Like a goddang conversation over tea I began to ask Sigyn about herself—”So, uh, what do you DO?” My intention was to figure out what she was the goddess OF, but her reply went something like, “Oh I take care of the boys and the garden, sometimes I paint.” And I was like “huh?” because that’s not what I expected.

And then

AND THEN

Friends, there were IMAGES that came to mind after that moment. A cottage in a meadow, charming as heck, all wooden on the inside with carefully organized clutter and colorful glass lamps. Overgrown but well-loved and cared-for plants. A sprawling garden, well-tended to, complete with at least two garden cats. Feelings of a mild summer night and fireflies, but also the gentle cool breeze of a spring day. It all had the vibe of something Hayao Miyazaki would draw, and something Jason Mraz would sing.

Sigyn IS artistic—actually, I think the whole damn household is. Instruments everywhere and art supplies. The house is FULL of DIY furniture and things. I got the very strong impression that Loki acts as Sigyn’s muse, happy to be WHATEVER she desires in order to spark joy and inspiration in her (this is my experience with Loki as well! I think he loves artists). It’s such a lovely relationship I could die.

In the kitchen I was shown the tea cupboard, and OH MY GODS YOU GUYS this woman has so much TEA! A tea for every reason! Colds, relaxation, stomach pains, sleep, you name it! And it struck me right then that Sigyn was very prolific at low magic: Kitchen witchery, green witchcraft, herbal remedies, etc. You know, more of the earth-based things as opposed to Frigg’s and Freyja’s lofty Seidr.

At this point I began to get a sense of what Sigyn looks like. Bear in mind, this is just how my brain interprets her since deity appearances are metaphorical to me: A woman on the cusp of entering middle age, with a middle-sized build, dark blond hair, hazel eyes, olive-toned and sun-darkened skin, and a couple of sun-spots and moles. Her face is charming and charactered, but definitely NOT the “young maiden” or “hollywood beauty” I previously imagined. She has some serious Cool Aunt vibes to her, actually.

As far as personality goes, she’s fun and playful at her default, bright as a sunflower, but her eyes and smile can quickly take on a cunning look to foretell some quip she’d say. She’s sharp. I got the sense she’s very fond of doublespeak—saying one thing and meaning another:

“Angrboda and I exchange recipes.”—She means witchcraft methods.

“He’s a Jotunn. He needs his exercise.”—The reply to my question about whether or not it bugs her that Loki’s so promiscuous.

(Also, fun fact, I asked her about that nasty “child bride” UPG and she LAUGHED and patted her [child-bearing] hips and said something like, “You better believe I’m a WOMAN!”)

A VERY good pick for Loki. She’s more grounded than he is but still just as bent on having fun. It’s such an amazing relationship I could die and I want to protect it forever.

This all being said, I quickly began to associate Sigyn with some of the following:

Low magic: kitchen witchery, green magic, etc.

Tea (all kinds)

DIY crafting

Art for art’s sake

Gardening and cooking, particularly as magical acts

The tidiness and happiness of a home

Personal balance

Steadfastness, resilience, and personal fortitude

And here’s some miscellaneous UPG:

Sigyn’s bisexual, which pairs well with Loki’s gender-nonconformity.

I guess she has tea with Angrboda from time to time and the two are good friends.

She considers Angrboda’s children her children as well.

Vali and Narfi are young adults and Sigyn’s doing a damn fine job making sure they don’t get into trouble at their rowdy and promiscuous age. xD

She’s not much into the “rabble of the Aesir” these days and I don’t blame her for it.

I now want Sigyn to be my aunt and tell me vibrant stories on her porch during a summer rainstorm with candles and tea.

Even if you don’t agree with this UPG (and you don’t have to) I wanted to provide it here in case some of you find it useful. It really, really bugged me that all Sigyn was defined as is “Loki’s wife,” and framed in senses that reek of 50’s-nostalgia. I’m glad I finally got to know her on my own terms and I hope we’ll become great friends. ^^ She’s really a wonderful goddess and deserves tons of love.

I want to hear UPGs. Despite working a whole lot with Loki I don’t know anything about his wife, outside of what I’ve read in the Eddas.

1. Sigyn’s the boss in the relationship, cmon.

2. Loki is actually pretty good at being romantic, I reckon, but only Sigyn ever sees him like that.

3. Sigyn has adopted Hel, Fenrir, and Jormungandr as her own, and the kids are fine with that (I’m sure they still see Angrboda as well, of course).

4. Would Loki play an instrument while Sigyn sang? Yeah, you bet.

I currently feel more of a pull toward Loki and his family (not sure if that makes me Lokean or Rokkatru? Is there a difference?) than I do the rest of the pantheon, and I have an altar for Loki and one for Hela. I feel like Sigyn needs her own space too, but I can find almost nothing devotional to get for her. Do you have any ideas?

Hi, Nonny!

A lokean is anyone who primarily worships Loki regardless of whatever other religious labels they identify with, and people who practice Rokkatru generally consider Loki to be one of the Rokkr. This means the two labels aren't mutually exclusive.

However, not everyone who worships Loki and his family identifies with Rokkatru. Many also work with the Aesir. Some don't hold the beliefs common to most Rokkatru practioners and feel closer to mainstream Heathenry instead. Some are just annoyed that the term Rokkatru is technically grammatically incorrect Icelandic. It's up to you to decide what you believe and what labels you'd like to apply to your practice, and it's okay to change labels as your practice evolves.

As for Sigyn, we have a whole Sigyn* tag with discussion and suggestions. (The asterisk is an old pagan Tumblr convention to weed out Marvel stuff, though it only works on desktop these days.) I'd also suggest going through Tumblr's general Sigyn* and Sigyndeity tags.

You'll find a lot of conflicting info because there's very little we have about Sigyn in the lore. People are working primarily from personal gnosis. So to a large extent it's okay to just go with whatever calls to you.

In light of certain family situations (both mine and my wifes) Ive had a lot of thoughts on Sigyn lately (so much so ive finally learned how to spell her name!)

One of the things that bothers me about my dysfunctional family my view of "how family should be" versus "how my family actually is" and unfortunately probably "how most families actually are."

That is, imo families are supposed to support and protect each other. Theyre supposed to value your wellbeing.

And that is supposed to carry thru to your community because family is supposed to be the foundation of your community. What I mean is that utimately, your family and your community are the same. The children you raise become your community, become the families of others in your community.

To me you cant be x-phobic/x-ist anything and still say that you support your family or community. Those things are the opposite of support and safety and the only thing to be done about them is to eradicate them.

So, for example, my grandmother is old school white catholic, which translate basically into all of those things in the name of her idea of god.

and I dont get it. and Im mad about it.

but without getting too deep into that, because its nothing new to most people in some way or another... back to Sigyn.

Sigyn as the goddess of bonds and most people wonder why she sticks with Loki.I dont really.

The bonds of what are supposed to be versus what they are.

People who were supposed to have Loki's back, but didnt.

Not that Loki is a saint, of course, but the theme of Norse mythology is that none of them are. Which also ties into how I see Loki as a bottom up person compared to Odins top down madness and all.

And it sort of comes down to their marriage, sure, but also imo marriage is about the family you choose. Odin and Loki became brothers by blood, and when your family of blood abandons you, who do you have?

As many of us know, we have the family we built. and that is Sigyn to me.
