In a couple of weeks, the preschool your eldest daughter attended was going on a field trip to a petting zoo in Montebello, California. Chaperone sign-up sheets were recently emailed to every parent, and you were debating with Harry about who should be the one to tag along. It wasn't a requirement to be a chaperone, but your worrisome maternal instincts sure made it one.

Harry was lying on the couch, his socked feet dangling over the armrest. You sat normally, your legs bent over his straightened knees, as you stared into space. The conversation kept hitting dead ends, but you were insistent on coming up with a solution as soon as possible. You had enough on your plate to deal with in the weeks ahead.

"Only one of us can chaperone the field trip," you repeated for probably the fourth time that night.

"I'm more than willing to take off work for it," Harry replied, his fingers casually laced over his chest. His eyes were closed since it was nearing ten p.m. and you hadn't been able to make up your mind about which parent should volunteer their time and energy toward the field trip. You had cornered Harry when he went to shut the living room lights off and forced him to sit down before he retreated to bed. It wasn't that you didn't trust him to be a chaperone—he'd definitely handle the controlled chaos that came with supervising a group of kids in an environment full of animals to gawk at. You just considered yourself a more watchful person, but really, it was an excuse to witness your daughter's interactions with her classmates and make sure she was adjusting well to being in school.

"I'm more than willing to as well. So..." You tapped your fingers against the couch cushion. "We need to make a decision right now. Signups are first come, first served."

Harry hummed in acknowledgment. "I can go."

You slowly nodded and said, "Okay. Well, so can I. You know, if you're not able to take off work."

He snorted a laugh and shifted his body, getting more comfortable. He was going to get a crick in his neck if this conversation didn't hurry along.

"What?" you asked, unsure why your reasonability was so amusing to him.

"You're funny."

You tilted your head back against the couch and sighed. "Harry, I'm trying to get us ahead of the game. Otherwise, neither of us will be able to chaperone, and then our child will be in the care of a random person."

Your trust in the preschool was substantial, but a part of you was still cautious about the parents. You hadn't found the chance to build relationships with them since you started working part-time again. Your little girl was a wanderer, and if something caught her attention, she was off and admiring it without notice. Other parents didn't know that about her. What if they didn't pay close enough attention and accidentally let her get lost? The mere thought was why you were determined to claim an open spot as a chaperone.

"You're not making this particularly easy, honey," Harry said lightly, tiredness rasping his voice. "I’m telling you that I would love to be a chaperone instead of a chef for a day. Getting to pet adorable animals is also a plus."

"Maybe we can write both of our names down," you replied, deep in thought. Half of what Harry had said ricocheted off your brain.

"I thought that wasn’t allowed." He yawned, stretching his arms. "Just put my name down. If work ends up being a problem, I'm sure they wouldn't mind you taking my place."

You contemplated his decision, then asked, "Did you read the chaperone responsibilities list?"

He frowned. "No, but there's time. The email was only sent this morning."

"You have to read it," you said firmly. He needed to be as prepared as possible. This was the first field trip of many, and rules have most likely changed since you were a kid.

In a lull of silence, Harry's hand caressed your ankle. "What are you anxious about? Talk to me."

You wanted to say everything, but not even someone as wise as Harry could procure a remedy for that. "Nothing," you mumbled. "Just trying to have a solid plan ready."

"Are you worried the moms will be all over me? Pulling me aside and asking me"—Harry paused for dramatic effect—"burning questions?"

You looked over at him, taking in his sly little smirk. He was being like this on purpose. Not to make you jealous, since you were years past that phase—instead, it was a way to distract you from ruminating over minuscule matters.

"I’m not worried at all," you said confidently, flashing him a grin. "Because you know what to do if that happens, right?"

Wordlessly, Harry lifted his left hand, showing off the gold wedding band snugly fit on his long ring finger. Exactly, you thought to yourself.

"And if they persist?" he asked, enjoyment brightening his expression. You knew he loved this type of banter.

"You show them the picture of me that you keep in your wallet." You leaned toward him. "If that doesn’t work, you call me and put whichever mom is flirting with you on the phone."

He bit his soft bottom lip. "Yes, ma'am."

You crooked your pointer finger, beckoning him closer. He sat up with a groan, his face now mere inches from yours. The hypothetical scenario caused misplaced jealousy to surge through your bloodstream, and you had to remind him of some things.

"You are my husband."

Harry traced the tip of his nose along your cheekbone and said, "Loud and proud, baby."

Your breaths became shallowed. "Father of our two children."

"And counting."

You pinched his waist, and he writhed with a heavenly laugh. "You're conventionally attractive, which piques a lot of people's interests. And while it used to bother me in the past, I know that your soul is tethered to mine."

His hands traveled an intimate path up your thighs. "It always has been," he said, his eyes sincere.

"So," you said with finality, your heart racing from his words, "I’ll let you chaperone the field trip. Because you always come back to me and our family, and I know work has been keeping you away from your girls."

"How do you turn the most mundane thing into a romantic declaration?"

"With you as my muse, it's pretty simple."

Harry moved closer and brushed his lips against yours. "If you keep melting my heart, I'm going to lay you down on this couch and make love to you until the sun rises."

"Risky," you whispered, smiling against his mouth. The kids were asleep down the hall. Any lovemaking would no doubt be interrupted by the baby monitor.

"Tell you what," he said, stealing a hot, deep kiss from you that left you briefly stunned. "This weekend, I'll have my mother take the girls for a day so you and I can love on each other without any distractions. I miss having you all to myself."

"I'm right here," you said, cupping his face. "And I'd appreciate it if you kissed me some more."

"I thought you needed to sign me up as a chaperone."

You kissed him three times in quick succession before saying, "Shut up and make out with me."

"Roger that," Harry murmured, towering over you until your back sank into the couch.

This isn't just for DT17, it can be for any part of the duckverse! Gifts can be anything as well- art, writing, podfics, AMVs/edits, GIFs, whatever you'd like to make.

Send us an ask saying you want to participate!! In your ask give us a little of what you would like in a gift! Favorite character? Favorite episode or comic? A trope you like? You don't have to (and when making a gift you don't have to adhere to what the giftee likes), but it helps to give some pointers! I'll add a template under the readmore to give you some ideas. Gifters/Giftees will be randomly assigned.

Your gift does not have to be Christmas-themed at all! And please know that this should all be done anonymously, so please don't give it away! The mystery is a big part of this event! You will know who you're making a gift for, but you won't know who is making your gift. Once you know who you're making a gift for, you're encouraged to check out their blog to get a feel of what they might like!

Applications to join will be closing December 1st, and preferably, gifts should be finished by Christmas, though this is not a hard-set deadline. We understand that life happens and that the end of the year is particularly busy, and we'll still be here to reblog your gift whenever you finish it! Feel free to post your gift anytime in December. Between now and December 1st we will be assigning people as we go, so when you sign up as soon as there's someone to assign you to we'll let you know! Please let us know at the very least a week before Christmas if you have to back out. If you miss the sign-up deadline we may have to open them up again for makeups if someone simply has to back out, so don't give up!

With just over a day left to sign up as a creator for Fandom Trumps Hate 2023, here's a quick roundup of all of the numbers:

We have 705 offers by 527 creators (I've had to update this three times while writing this post!). Of those, 97 are offering to work in ANY fandom! The rest have signed up offering fanworks in 273 fandoms, including 177 write-in fandoms! (To compare that with roughly the same time last year, as we approached 24 hours left to sign up for FTH2022 we had 680 offers from 525 creators in 257 fandoms including 153 write-ins … meaning we have 23 more offers in 16 more fandoms by the same number of creators for 2023 … SO FAR.)

A look at the offers, broken down by type (with last year's numbers in italics for comparison purposes) -

The orgs selected least often are The Appeal, Razom, and Violence Policy Center.

In our listed fandoms Good Omens has increased its lead and its lock on the top spot. MCU caught up with Sherlock and Teen Wolf for a brief 3-way tie for 4th place behind HP and K-pop, but has since gained an additional signup to claim that spot, leaving Sherlock and Teen Wolf tied for fifth ahead of Star Wars, Stranger things, SVSSS, The Untamed, and The Sandman.

When creating your wish list, you must make sure to label which you want to ensure you are receiving the correct gift.

Crackships are ALLOWED! What is a crackship? It's a ship between two characters who have never interacted or been in the same franchise. Platonic or romantic relationships can also be crackships as well. They're usually nonsensical, but there will be a point at which the joke ship becomes an entire obsession.

An example of a crackship: Meta Knight x Princess Peach. Both are fighters in several SSB games.

“Come with me if you want to live.”

Wooyoung pointed dramatically at Yunho, who was lounging in his home office with a mug of coffee in hand. Yunho blinked at him, mid-sip, his face scrunching in confusion. 

“What?”

“Don’t ask questions. Just get up. Now,” Wooyoung hissed, glancing nervously over his shoulder like he was being followed.

Yunho sighed, setting his mug down. “Did your toast catch on fire again?”

“No, it’s worse,” Wooyoung snapped, yanking Yunho to his feet. 

“Byeol was turned into a human, and if K/N or Hongjoong find out, we’re both dead.”

“As in…San’s Byeol?”

“Yes, that Byeol!” Wooyoung practically shouted. “Except now she’s not a cat. She’s a human. And if K/N finds out she’s going to nail me to the wall!”

Yunho’s eyes widened in dawning horror. He wiggled himself free from Wooyoung’s grasp, taking a cautious step back. 

“Oh, no. No, no, no.”

“What do you mean, ‘no’?”

Yunho had always been referred to as a human golden retriever, with his sunny disposition, unwavering kindness, and innate need to help everyone around him–but not this time. There was no way Jeong Yunho, a devout Catholic, would engage in anything remotely related to the supernatural, despite the love of his life being a witch. 

“Come on,” Wooyoung huffed, giving Yunho a shove toward the hallway.

They entered Wooyoung’s room, and Yunho immediately froze. There she was—Byeol, now in human form, crouched in front of a display case containing Wooyoung’s prized butterfly collection. Her wide, curious eyes were fixed on the iridescent wings, her fingers hovering dangerously close to the glass.

Yunho groaned, dragging a hand down his face as the reality of the situation fully sank in. 

“K/N’s going to kill me,” he muttered under his breath. “But you—” he pointed at Wooyoung, “you are definitely going to die first.”

The little girl lit up as soon as she saw Yunho and bounded over to him, headbutting him in the chest. He staggered slightly, looking down at her in disbelief.

“Not if we fix this before she finds out,” Wooyoung said, crossing his arms. “That’s why I need your help. You’re good at…being responsible.”

“Responsible?” Yunho repeated incredulously. 

“You turned San’s cat into a person, and now you want me to clean up your mess because I’m ‘responsible’? Are you serious right now?”

“No, a fae turned San’s cat into a human,” Wooyoung corrected, defensively crossing his arms. “I tried to stop her, but she vanished.”

Yunho sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Okay,” he said, his tone more measured now. 

“So, you tried to stop her, but she got the upperhand. What happened, though? Why couldn’t you stop her?”

Wooyoung shifted uncomfortably, his gaze dropping to the floor. “She got into my head,” he muttered, barely loud enough for Yunho to hear. 

“You know I also act as a memory keeper, and she brought up things I thought I did a good job of burying them because it seemed so long ago. By the time I snapped out of it, she was gone and Byeol was…human.”

“Right,” Yunho said, nodding slowly as if he were trying to process the absurdity of the situation. 

“I’m sorry that happened. But it still doesn’t explain why you thought dragging me into this mess was a good idea.”

“Because I can’t do this alone!” Wooyoung burst out. 

“Look, I know I give you a hard time, but you’re the only one who can help without making things worse. I just need you to keep K/N distracted while I figure out the rest. Please, Yunho.”

Wooyoung barely ever asked for help—he was a familiar, after all, imbued with the power of magic just like his masters. Familiars were supposed to be capable, resourceful, and unflappable. Wooyoung prided himself on being all of those things. He wasn’t the type to panic or crack under pressure; that simply wasn’t in his nature.

But this was different.

This was a fae, a being whose power dwarfed his own, whose cleverness was as dangerous as their magic. And Wooyoung had failed. Not for lack of trying, but because she had done something he hadn’t expected, something he hadn’t been prepared for. 

Wooyoung hated admitting it, even to himself, but the fae had won, and now he was scrambling to undo the disaster he himself couldn’t fix on his own. 

Sensing his hesitation, Byeol slipped her head under Yunho’s large hand, effectively giving herself pats. Her big blue eyes peered up at him despite her clumsy movements. She didn’t understand the chaos her transformation had caused, nor the trouble Wooyoung had dragged Yunho into. All she wanted was reassurance, comfort, and maybe another pat on the head.

“P…Please,” she stammered, her voice mimicking Wooyoung’s pleading tone.

Yunho blinked, glancing between Byeol’s big, imploring eyes and Wooyoung, who was now standing near the door with his hands clasped together with an exaggerated pout on his face. 

“Alright,” Yunho finally muttered, leaning back with a weary sigh as his resolve crumbled. 

“I’ll keep K/N distracted. But you’d better find a way to fix this, Wooyoung. I mean it,” he warned, giving the familiar a pointed look.

“Oh my god, Yunho, thank you!” Wooyoung practically dove to the ground, landing on his knees with a dramatic thud. He pressed his hands together as if in prayer, his grin wide and unrepentant.

But deep down, guilt gnawed at him. He had, rather conveniently, neglected to mention the precarious detail that he and Byeol were planning a journey to visit none other than Lord Death himself. Then again, Yunho didn’t really need to know.

Wooyoung wasn’t sure what would horrify Yunho more—the audacity of the plan or the fact that Wooyoung had kept it from him entirely. Either way, this was the best course of action. His life, and Yunho’s, depended on it, and Wooyoung was willing to do whatever it took to keep them alive.
