thoma's eyes were so green. the lush emerald warbled and trembled under your gaze and you felt your heart squeeze painfully. your thumbs swiped away at the rivulets that swam down the slopes of his flushed, red cheeks.

the sun never cried.

but thoma felt himself eclipsed by the shadow of mourning; a love so close and supple in his hands yet only minutes away from being so far out of reach. engulfed by the swell of a sorrowful ocean, time continued to teeter onwards and encroach closer and closer to the shores of an inevitable goodbye.

"i'll write to you, each and every day. i promise." his voice clamored in his throat, desiring nothing more than to voice how much he yearned to stay by your side and let the winds of the anemo archon tickle him pink with delight.

his arms encircled you and hovered over your body like a protective shield, shying you away from the view of the ship that would soon take him far, far away to a land where you no longer stood by his side.

"will you think of me as well?" you asked quietly against his chest, careful not to let your mind be blotted out by the hammering of his heart.

"always. forever."

eternity was in his grasp and he clutched onto it in a vice grip, deft fingers squeezing their way into the fabric of your shirt as if you'd disappear any moment. suppressing the shake of your shoulders and heaves of your chest was futile; thoma felt every inch of your body and knew all of your tells.

"hey," he smiled—a warbly smile full of love and mirth and sorrow all encapsulated into his lips, "if you cry more i don't think i'll be able to leave this dock."

"then i'll keep crying." you mumbled as you shoved your face back into his chest, yearning for his heartbeat to fill your ears and consume your mind.

his laugh reverberated across your body and filled you with an impossible warmth. how would you ever get by without him?

"i promise you i'll come back. and when i do, we can go pick as many cecilias and make as many cakes as you want. does that sound good, honey?"

you nodded ferociously, desperate to cling to the memories he'd made with you during his time in mondstat.

reluctantly, thoma removed his arms from your body and reached up to his neck to unclasp the necklace that hung from his neck. the metal pooled itself into the clammy, warm grip of his hands which then fell like a waterfall into your hand, underside cupped by thoma's.

"i want you to have this so you know i'm serious about my promise," thoma guided your hands to cup over the necklace and kissed the back of your knuckles, "my heart will only ever beat for you and no one else."

with shaky hands, he clasped the necklace and let the tags fall to your chest. the metal beamed in the setting sun and pulsed next to your throbbing heart.

you ignored the sting of tears hidden behind your eyes and let your worries fall away as your lips met his. stay here forever, be with me. if only, but you knew that thoma was nothing if not loyal to those he loved. his hand cupped the back of your head and pulled you impossibly close to the warmth radiating just beneath the thin layer of his clothes. he drained you of all your sorrows even after pulling away with ruddy lips and cheeks and eyes that sang ballads of romantic love for all to hear.

"i'll wait for you."

your words echoed around in his mind as he kissed you goodbye one final time and as your waving, sobbing figure grew smaller and smaller as the ship bound for inazuma grew further and further from mondstat's ports. thoma clasped a fist around his heart and tried his best to will away the void pain resounding in his arteries. he reached for the metal necklace but remembered its new owner, but nonetheless felt relief course through his veins.

the promise he made to you sat comfortably in his heart and he began counting down the days where he'd see you again.
