ttm beach episode spoilers below!

something about how the game lets you decide when to end it all and come back to reality. press esc to leave. how it would be up to eva how long she'd stay there on that beach, but knowing she could never remain there forever. just a little while longer. something about how it greets you with the same image if you decide to open it again. the truth is, i never actually felt that way. do you begin the cycle again or do you find comfort in that temporary ending? and i just can't get past that it's the one i didn't want.

something about how player's actions represent eva coming back to the machine searching for closure. did she find it? will she? will we?

while it was only my first (of many) playthroughs, i think the way the game portrays dealing with grief is really heartwrenching and beautiful in how real but fleeting it all is.

oh god okay where do i even begin ... in general that was the most devastating ending in fiction ever i think... and i think the sigcorp series might be the only series ever to be able to pull it off. it's crazy how sounding out what we already knew would happen was still so !!! poignant!!! the music was spectacular. the art was spectacular. freebird's commitment to rpgmaker is astounding and i love it (though i know last hour and onwards will be unity)

more specific thoughts:

i loved being able to see more of rox and rob, particularly i love that rob is just a Really Strange Guy instead of the only normal sigcorp employee like a lot of us thought he would be, i think it makes his & rox's dynamic all that much funnier. two weird and offputting guys on totally opposite sides of the weird and offputting spectrum

even though the plot was very In Your Face compared to every other entry in the sigcorp series (this was made to answer questions about IF, after all), there's still so much to discuss and theorize about! i've spent So much time already discussing how i suspect neil died w/ friends (which i could make into a whole other post. tbh) and whatever the hell was going on with the quintessence cast ?? (more on that later)

i loved seeing eva's walls crumble down. she lied about the journey mattering more to her than the ending, of course she did because she works the worst job on the planet and she has to lie to herself to keep going. i can't think too long about her in the very ending asking such vulnerable questions to neil about if he'd really do all those sweet relationshippy things for her or putting her head into her arms and sobbing after he asked how it happened.oh.my god

i genuinely thought the quintessence guys from the teasers would be cameo characters, which yeah they were for the most part! but lunair was so interesting... what did she mean when she said she's something else entirely!! where did she come from why is she in on the simulation with faye!! the only rational thing i can come up with is quintessence being a side-project by neil leaking into the simulations but then that makes her comment before irrelevant... head in my hands

and i love/hate how the Entire series has been a simulation by eva... god especially minisode 2,,, realizing that party Never Happened and it was just her trying to make a happier memory for herself. do you think that was the last christmas neil ever celebrated? do you think she ever really gave him the sound recorder, or was it her present self playing 4D chess with their memories? it'll be a very long time until i can bring myself to replay any of these games knowing i'm being complicit in eva's unhealthy grief habits. well fucking done kan gao .how did you do it

shorter thoughts that don't need their own paragraphs: the minigames were so fun, the spectator mode for xtreme beach was such a fun touch; i loved the ingame confirmation about colin and river being deskmates; i think last hour will be the last hour of neil's life; after kan's tweet last year about last hour & the beach episode being the good and bad ending respectively, i placed my bets on beach being the good ending. i really hope i'm wrong now actually after seeing it; and finally i've already listened to world in a memory 200 times, it makes me nauseous every time

in conclusion: i need to hug eva rosalene so fucking badly

HAHA YESSS Freebird the beloved. To The Moon series has had a death grip on me for uhhh... 5-6 years now??? Neil especially 😎 yes the beach episode did wreck me. And then I got KO'd again when I played it with my girlfriend a week later and tried not to give away any spoilers. Also beware if you haven't played beachisode bc there will be spoilers in this response!

But the Bingo!!! I'm about to go on a bit of a ramble don't mind me-- I think that since Neil has like... been one of my favorites for so long if you asked me at different points of time to fill out this bingo it would be completely different. But I think the MAIN two squares in this which are the ones I could say more about are "Canon isn't real if I don't look at it" and "I fuck with this aesthetic so hard"

So. For the canon one... so the thing is I do appreciate the Beach episode and it's ending, I think it says a lot about certain topics and it portrays the like... side of death that is really difficult to swallow so it's not typically portrayed in media. I accept this (and also EXTREMELY look forward to The Last Hour RPG. PLEASE.). But there is always going to be a place in my heart where they did get their garden. Which, honestly, whenever I say stuff like that, I know that's the whole point-- that it's not accepting the reality as it is, just like Eva-- but also... maaaan.

The other one is a lot more simple and less like an analysis-- and literally just the "aesthetic" is the type of character that he set me up to love for the rest of my life ig 😭 I permanently will love the "silly, sarcastic, kind of an asshole characters that have another, sadder side to them that they're hiding." While it is a trope that can be a bit. well. cheesy. I think it's also something that can be done really well, and I get attached to those characters very easily :]

🎨What creative outlet do they like?

Well, Lynri canonically has made meme references, and her son is a massive nerd, so I like to imagine she also loves watching movies and tv shows, especially those that have a good sci-fi element to them. I think she spent a couple of nights on binge-watching sessions with Quincy because he didn't know half of the shows she was talking about and she had to catch him up. In return, Quincy introduces "bad movie nights" where they watch absolutely garbage films together. Lynri cringes so badly but just has to keep watching the train wreck. I also think Lynri's done a bit of amateur photography, and that she used to press some flowers in her books when she was younger. She invests less and less time into these creative outlets and eventually drops them altogether as she becomes solely entrenched in her work.

⬇️ What element would they bend?

I'd have to say water, as Lynri is a fairly quiet and focused person who has a sharp mind and a lot of strong feelings she keeps under wraps in her attempts to distance herself from others. The flow and subtle control you need for waterbending forms is something I could see Lynri mastering easily. Her coldness/aloofness at times can also coincide with the creation and manipulation of ice. Perhaps the temperature of the water she bends raises or lowers depending on how much she's isolating herself. :(

I also feel this is a little cruel though, since waterbenders have the capacity to learn how to heal physical injuries and pain, but apparently not disease...

I can also see Lynri as a non-bender who is exceptionally technologically skilled.

kudos to roxie and rob for being great friends to eva, reaching out to her and taking her on that vacation. we don't know who was calling eva in the starting screen but it was probably one of them or members of her family. it could have also been quincy! i've been thinking how they could help each other out while grieving :( i'm glad she has people she can count on in her life

also i really like that the beach episode gave us more roxie and rob moments, showing us more of their characters!! i love that they got more chances to be goofy <3 rob especially since in previous games, when he had lines of dialogue he was stoic and serious, and here we get to see that he matches roxie's freak kshfskfhskj

im wondering if eva left her job at sigmund after neil's death, since she'd had to get a new partner. plus this whole thing going down would definitely change how she feels about her job... i wonder if she ever briefly considered signing up with sigmund for a life where neil lived.

and last but not least: what the hell did angus mean by "... who's still alive, that is..." what is the fate of sigcorp

and i gotta say, while im a tinyyyyy bit disappointed over there not being a lot of new music tracks in the game, i really enjoyed hearing music from the previous games. and the title theme GOES HARD
