Tails's heart clenched at the sight of her tears, the soft whimpers tugging at something deep within him. The vibrant pink stain of the smoothie hardly mattered compared to the way cream trembled, her small hand still clutching his like it was her only anchor in the storm. For a moment, the clutter of his workshop—the half-finished gadgets, the scattered blueprints, and the lingering scent of motor oil—faded into the background. All he saw was her.

“Cream, hey . . .” he began, his voice barely above a whisper, unsure how to weave words that could untangle her from her spiral. He knelt to her level, his free hand hovering just shy of her shoulder, hesitant to intrude but desperate to comfort.

“You didn’t ruin anything, okay"?” he said gently, his tone as steady as he could muster, though his throat felt tight. He tilted his head slightly, trying to catch her downturned gaze. “That smoothie? It's nothing. And . . . and the lunch idea? Honestly one of the nicest things anyone’s done for me in a while.”

Smiling softly, his thumb brushing lightly over the back of her hand in an absentminded attempt to soothe. “And that bump? Well, I’ve had my fair share of those. You know, part of being a genius inventor is also being a walking magnet for accidents. Trust me, it doesn’t make you any less amazing."

With a subtle blush cascading his muzzle, he would bask in a coquetry attempt of solace. Thinking Sonic, Tails gave her a small, lopsided grin, one ear twitching as he continued. “Besides, I’ve got just the thing for that bump. I think I even built a prototype ice pack that’s shaped like a Chao egg .. Maybe not my most groundbreaking invention, but hey, it works.” He would keep that sidlopped grin, praying to Gaia above that it looked as handsome as he assumed it to be. "You don’t have to be perfect, Cream. I mean, c’mon, you already are! Hardest job in the world, right?"

Practice run:

Cream’s button nose wiggled, whether it be the invasive smell of saw dust coating her lungs, or her anxious tendencies, she could not decipher herself.

Her lips parted slightly, as if to form words, only to close again before pressing into a tight line. Fingers curled tightly around the basket she carried, knuckles whitening with the strain.

She needed to say something.

Yet her heart raced, paws clamoured with sweat beneath silk gloves. She stood behind the fox who continued his mindless muttering, gadgets and gizmos a’ plenty littered near him. His arms stretched out beneath the belly of his plane, fingers groping blindly for a missing tool.

Cream hesitated, her steps soft as she edged closer, her instincts whispering that this might be the perfect moment. But just as she gathered her courage, his hand closed around the elusive object, and the rhythmic tink of metal on metal resumed, his muttering unbroken.

Her cheeks flushed, the warmth spreading through her muzzle. She shouldn't have barged in unannounced. What was she thinking?

Head bowed, she turned away from the workshop, the weight of yet another failed attempt pressing down on her. She could already picture the gentle, apologetic expression her older sister would wear, Emerald eyes full of understanding, as though she could feel the nerves that had once again gotten the better of the little rabbit. Her mother would follow suit, enveloping her in a warm embrace, her soothing voice assuring her that there would always be more chances.

But it all felt painfully familiar—predictable, even. The same refrain: too young, too timid, even now.

A heavy sigh escaped her lips as she walked, her gaze falling to the rhythmic dance of her polished Mary Jane shoes, peeking in and out from beneath the hem of her dress with each reluctant step. They seemed to mimic the ebb and flow of her own hesitation, vanishing, reappearing, over and over again.

Oh well, she’d just prepare him lunch another day—there was always tomorrow.

Lost in her thoughts, she barely registered her own steps until a sudden jolt brought her to an abrupt halt. She stumbled, nearly losing her balance, her mind reeling from the unexpected collision. Serves you right for not watching where you’re going dear, her mental image of her mother chided, the words laced with disappointment.

Heat rose to her cheeks as she dusted off her dress, glancing around to assess the damage to her pride. She sighed heavily, her shoulders slumping under the weight of her embarrassment. Surely, this afternoon couldn’t possibly get any worse. Or so she hoped.

“Yikes, Cream, are you alright?”
