We were seven years old. 

I considered myself to be a normal second grader but was convinced that she wasn't. "Oh, she's tiny but you must see her on the stage, I must say." They called her so many names. Bird. Swan. Ballerina in a music box. Maybe because her feet moved like one. She used to spin so fast, a mere spectator such as I used to faint. The youngest in her class which was dominated by tall fourteen years olds who seemed like oak trees to me. My mother tried to get me in with her, but I turned out to be one of the unfortunate who could only appreciate the art from a distance. But hey, I proved to be not completely useless. My fingers were my weapons, and so was my memory. Playing string instruments isn't that easy, you see.

I still remember the time I went to a kathak recital for the first time. I guess, I was fourteen. I was an accompanist for the sitar and was offered to sit on stage. If there's something that has remained unchanged in me for all these years, was the adrenaline. The stress to perform well on stage. This was the first time my teacher had entrusted me with the responsibility to be an accompanist and I had to make her proud. I donned a lilac pastel saree. "My child looks so grown up." My mother ruffled my hair. 

"You look just like your mother when she was ten, violets." My father had commented. A compliment which I wear like a badge of honour to this day.

I had never seen her dance in person. Just classmates, but our mothers were the best of friends. I had always considered her to be a child of my mother's friend. It all changed when I saw her on the stage that day. There were friends, family, well wishers and teachers in the auditorium. The air was cold with the air conditioning and the floor was hard. But then I saw her.
