This is the first and only fic that is exclusively Empires SMP related. Specifically season 2, which is my favorite season. Probably because it was the one I ended up watching live. Anyway, when I saw western on the list of prompts, I had to bring back Tumble Town and the Sheriff for it.

Also, not enough people talk about the G/t potential for season 2 of Empires? I mean, canonically Joel was an 11 foot tall god and Jimmy was shrunk down using a special lore potion. Why did I not do more things with this? Anyway, both of those things are relevant to this fic.

 Joel flew over Tumble Town, trying to see if he could spot the tiny sheriff. Normally, from this height, it would be impossible to see someone that small, but thanks to the power of Lore, Joel’s eyesight was better than the average players.

 As he flew over the town, he couldn’t help but think of how well it was coming together. Jimmy was actually becoming a pretty decent builder and that was seen in every new build he made. Joel would go so far as to say he was even proud of him.

 He shook his head, now was not the time to be thinking about that though. The reason he was here, looking for Jimmy in the first place was because he wasn’t answering his messages. From anybody. It wasn’t just Joel who had tried but Lizzie, Gem, Scott, Fwhip…everyone on the server had tried to contact the man but no one had received anything back.

 So, after days of this, Joel finally took it upon himself to find Jimmy and figure out what was going on.

 He landed in the center of the crater, nearby the first building Jimmy had built here. This was where he usually stayed if he was in. He crouched down, still in his godly 11 foot form, and knocked on the door.

 Silence.

 Joel frowned. “Jimmy, it’s Joel. I came by because you haven’t been messaging anyone back.” Joel called into the building. He waited for a few seconds but still nothing. “Come on Jimmy, I know you’re in there!” He didn’t. “If you don’t come out and talk to me, I’ll break your door down.”

 After nothing again, Joel reared back with the intent to break the door when his comm dinged. He paused and grabbed it, looking at what had come through. Surprisingly, it was from Jimmy.

 Joel frowned. Well that was out of character. If anything, he was at least expecting an exclamation point at the end. Something seemed off.

 At least he knew Jimmy really was in there though.

 “I’m not leaving until you come out and talk to me!” Joel exclaimed. “And I’m still very willing to break your door down.” He reared back again only for the door to suddenly swing open.

 Joel froze and looked down. Jimmy was about a foot tall thanks to the lore magic Joel had splashed on him. But with Joel himself being 11 feet tall, the size difference was even more noticeable between the two of them. Jimmy could comfortably fit in his palm if he really wanted to. Which, by the way Jimmy was glaring at him, he probably didn’t.

 That was the other thing. Joel has seen Jimmy annoyed and angry multiple times. That was their whole bit this season. But that’s all it was. A bit. Joel knew Jimmy was never really angry with him and Jimmy knew Joel didn’t really mean it.

 At least, that’s what he had thought.

 But looking down at Jimmy now, he was starting to question it. He had never seen such a genuinely angry and pained look on the sheriff’s face before.

 Joel’s face softened. “Jimmy, I-”

 “I told you to leave me alone!” Jimmy yelled, cutting him off. “I don’t-I don’t want to see you or anybody else, okay?! I just need to be alone right now.” Jimmy turned around and tried to go back inside.

 Joel, panicking at how Jimmy was acting, stopped him by reaching down and grabbing him.

 “Hey! Let go!” Jimmy yelled, and Joel’s heart dropped at the genuine distress in his voice.

 Joel moved away from the house, standing to his full height and holding Jimmy carefully in his hand, lifting him up a bit more to see him better. Jimmy was struggling against his grip, trying to free himself. But it was fruitless and Joel’s hands didn’t so much as budge. 

 “Jimmy, it’s just me. Please just talk to me or something! We’re all worried about you.” Joel said, trying to calm the tiny sheriff down. 

 Jimmy paused in his struggles and looked down, not making eye contact with Joel. “...Are you really?” Jimmy asked, a biting tone to his words which caught Joel off guard.

 “What? Of course! We’re your friends.” Joel exclaimed, looking at Jimmy still wrapped up in his hand. He looked a lot more vulnerable than Joel had ever seen him like this.

 Finally, Jimmy looked up and met his eyes and Joel was surprised, and a bit horrified, to see tears there. “...Are you really?” Jimmy repeated, this time his tone was defeated and sad, no hint of any bite left.

 Joel felt his heart break a little.

 “Of course we are. Jimmy, you’re one of my best friends.” Joel said, his voice going quiet. Joel licked his dried lips. “Is this…is this because of the bit we’ve been doing? I don’t actually hate you. Nobody does!”

 Jimmy was silent for a long moment. “...I-I know it’s a bit. But lately it’s just seemed like…too real?” Jimmy shook his head and turned away, face now hot. “This is why I needed some time to be alone…”

 “Jimmy.” Joel said and opened his hand so he was now cupping Jimmy in both hands before bringing him up to eye level. Jimmy looked him in the eye, a bit surprised at his tone. “I’m so sorry I didn’t see you hurting sooner. We can stop the bit and I can grow you back to normal.”

 Jimmy’s eyes widened and then, shockingly, he shook his head. “No, no! The bit is funny and being small like this isn’t too bad.”

 Joel’s eyes narrowed. “Jimmy, the bit is the whole reason you think we hate you.”

 “I…” Jimmy trailed off. “But the viewers-”

 Joel shook his head. “Your mental health comes first, Jim.” Joel thought for a moment. “Maybe we can progress the bit. To where we come to an understanding and become friends? And if you don’t mind being small too much we can keep that bit going?” Joel suggested, trying to make this work.

 Jimmy thought about it, going over the details in his head. “I…I guess that would work.” He looked up once more to meet Joel’s eyes. “Sorry, I just…It was really getting to me for some reason this season.”

 Joel’s eyes softened. “You don’t have to be sorry. I think some of us do take it too far sometimes. I…take it too far sometimes.” Joel admitted feeling guilty for causing Jimmy this much pain. “But please, next time just say something? You had us all worried when you weren’t answering our messages or coming out of Tumble Town.”

 Jimmy hesitated briefly but nodded. “I’ll…I’ll try.”

 Joel nodded, that was all he could ask of him. And now Joel knew to do better as well. He’d have to tell the others eventually but that could wait for later. “Now come on. It’s been too long since I’ve hung out with my best bud. How about a movie night back at my place?”

 Jimmy’s eyes widened and for the first time since coming here, Jimmy smiled. “Yeah, I’d like that.”

 Joel grinned. “Alright, then hang on.”

 Jimmy’s face turned to confusion. “Wait, what-?

 Before Jimmy could finish, Joel cupped him closer to his chest and took off using his wings. Jimmy let out a small shriek. “Joel!” Jimmy yelled but it was said playfully and with a slight laugh behind it. Joel grinned and continued back towards Stratos.

 They were going to be okay.

Hide & Seek references compendium

I put so many little easter eggs and hidden things in my Hide and Seek fic, so here is my little ongoing list of references I purposefully put in the fic for those of you who like this kind of thing idk man

Chapter 1, Disney's Hercules: "Hey, Mack! Ya wanna buy a sundial?" Disney's Jungle Cruise: “Trader Sam’s! Come shop at Trader Sam’s! He’ll give you a great deal on shrunken heads! Two of his heads for one of yours!” the Holmes Hotel, Hugh's Pies is a reference to Nickelodeon's Jimmy Neutron series, Lilo's Stitches and Embroidery is a nod to Disney's Lilo and Stitch, "Crusty the Crab" is a nod to Spongebob Squarepants, Chell's Portal Stop is a reference to the game series Portal, and the final scene is from the ROTTMNT episode "Hidden City's Most Wanted".

Though this is not technically a reference or Easter egg, I wanted to add this note… I made a point of referring to Splinter as Lou Jitsu when he was mad or angry or selfish, and as Hamato Yoshi when he was scared or sad.

Chapter 2, Leo's determination to have Raph call him "the world's greatest ninja" is a reference to the film, Leo's quote "Land safely!" is taken from the episode "Mystic Mayhem" as well as the episode "The Evil League of Mutants", Leo's complaining to be leader is a nod to his future role, Raph referring to his father as a "sewer monster" is a reference to the episode "Man vs. Sewer", Splinter has a flashback from the episode "Goyles, Goyles, Goyles" and the line "OW! Why, you little--!" is also taken from that same episode.

Chapter 3, Mikey's dream is obviously a nod to all that he will do in the future.

Chapter 4, The origin of Lace Face from the episode "Man vs. Sewer".

Chapter 5, Phineas and Ferb "Escape from Phineas Tower": "That's some mole!" The line "Raph! Your enormous body is crushing me!!” is a reference to Disney's Lilo and Stitch, "sweater town" is a reference to the Gravity Falls episode "The Hand that Rocks the Mabel", the line "I didn't want to believe it, but... *sigh* science." is taken directly from the ROTTMNT film as well as a moment when Leo mentions that Donnie was wrong, Donnie uses two really's, a reference from the episode "Breaking Purple", Donnie gives Leo the comic seen in the episode "Jupiter Jim Ahoy!"

Chapter 6, Splinter's tv flips through several channels which include clips from media. These include a Thomas Sanders vine with "Weatherman Al", the quote "My leg!" from Spongebob Squarepants, part of the Fairly Odd Parents' theme song, Mrs. Cuddles' catchphrase "Let's be friends forever!", "I've got bad feeling about this" is a quote from Star Wars, the fake show about "Goosey" is an easter egg to @gooeseyleo and her Gooseyleo series. When Leo goes onstage, he does "a few improvised dance moves", which is a nod to Ben Schwartz and some dance moves he did in the Netflix improv comedy special "Middleditch and Schwartz”. The Lou Jitsu play the boys perform is a parody of the Godzilla franchise and the Pacific Rim films. Donnie's line "I strive for accuracy" is a reference to @sleepis4theweak 's comic (which I think about every gosh darn day), Horsebot-3000 and Splinter's line "I liked Horsebot-3000" are references to the show Community, season 3 episode 7: "Studies in Modern Movement".

Chapter 7, in the illustration Leo and Donnie are wearing Transformer and Decepticon t-shirts, respectively, and in the background you can see spray paint that spells out "Atomic Lass", as well as a drawing of the turtles' weapons.

Chapter 8, a young BEBOP AND ROCKSTEADY make an appearance, as does a very young Harvey Hokum from the ROTTMNT comics. When Bebop tries to sell Leo, he calls him “Shelly”, a reference to my pet turtle of the same name. In the illustration you can see a goldfish on the shelf, which is meant to be Piebald.

Chapter 9, How It's Made, APRIL O'NEIIIIILLLL, Harvey Hokum, Warren Stone and Kendra are referenced, "Operation Blue Suede Shoes" contains the title of a song, a reference to how in the show there are several similar code-names used for the characters ("Purple Rain" for Donnie, "Yellow Submarine" for April, etc.) Leo says that Mikey has empathy amplified, a reference to the fanfiction of the same name written by @filsa-mek on AO3.

Chapter 10, the boys watch "Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit". Leo promises to never leave Raphael alone and to always find him. Raph offers several scenarios that actually happen in the future where Leo searches for Raph - sewer monsters (a reference to the episode Man Vs. Sewer), getting captured by bad guys (the episode Bug Busters), and aliens attacking (the events of the film). The chapter as a whole is also based off of a few sketches I made - one of which shows the boys watching the film with Splinter, and one where Raph has a bad dream and wakes up to seeing he hurt Leo, who offers to help and gets the bros together for a turtle pile.

Chapter 11, the episode is heavily inspired by an episode of the audio drama series Adventures in Odyssey, specifically the episode "Mandy's Debut". The line "Wow, the shortcake of death" is a reference taken from said same episode! During Leo's flashback, a reference to the meme "She knocked that smug look off my face, but fourtunately I had a smaller smug look underneath" when Leo takes off his sunglasses to reveal a cooler pair of sunglasses underneath. Leo and Raph make a note to the fact that Leo is not the eldest in this universe.

Chapter 12, Raph, Leo, and Mikey teach April a game they play in the episode "Late Fee". When using sign language, Donnie tells Leo to "Stop yelling at me", which is inspired by a moment in Spy Kids 4. April introduces Raph to Ghostbear's starting career. Mikey repeats a line from the episode "Bug Busters", which is "Remind me not to ask questions anymore." Mikey uses the phrase "hydrate or die-drate", which is taken from a meme but is also something I say constantly as well. When in the Hidden City, Splinter hears people calling out to customers, one uses the lyrics to the Fairly Odd Parents' theme song, another is selling Mary Poppins' umbrella, a third is selling the three mystery journals from Gravity Falls, the fourth is selling Cinderella's glass slippers, and the last one is selling the Stanley Parable bucket of reassurance. Ochimizu is a Japanese mythical elixir of eternal life. The introduction and origins of Loathsome Leonard and the Mud Dogs. Malicious Mickey uses the "creepy doctor" line from "Stuck on You".

Chapter 13, Donnie delirium is directly based off of my own experiences with delirium, as well as his and Leo's conversation about whether or not Leo would miss him when he dies (which was an actual conversation I had with my mother when I was sick with croup as a little girl). The second half of that conversation was adapted from a scrapped fic called "The Kids Are All Dying". Donnie references the song "Big Yellow Taxi". The seven-tailed fox comes from Japanese folklore, but specifically this one was a reference to Naruto! Mikey sings the first line of the "Wonderfilled" song by Owl City. The secret ingredient being a discontinued soda was inspired by the ending of the musical "Be More Chill". The toad yokai becomes Heinous Green.

Short story, in the illustration you can see several signatures and sketches on Leo's cast, such as Raph signing "Mad Dawgs" and Mikey drawing his stickers. On the wall behind Leo is an eye exam that has the words "RISE" and "PHOEBE" on it. There's also a computer monitor in the back with Leo's vitals on it, as well as a notification about the trackers, and a list of all Hamatos Donnie tagged.

Despite all the pitfalls on the long journey to statehood, on May 11, 1949, the UN General Assembly, by the requisite two-thirds majority, approved the application to admit Israel to the UN by General Assembly Resolution 273. We should consider, too, aside from the legal documentation we are examining here, that Israel is replete with stories, memorial scriptures and artifacts from pre-Biblical times and possesses a calendar that dates to 5783. Israel’s existence is not only official but immemorial.

Following Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War and its acquisition of territory, anti-Zionists demanded that Israel return to its shrunken 1967 borders, proclaiming their opposition to “the immoral and impractical policies that deny Palestinians equal rights,” calling for an end to “the siege on Gaza” and for “a permanent ceasefire,” and putting the onus on Israel to comply. Jimmy Carter’s mendacious book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid" is worth examining in some detail. Among the weave of falsehoods that bind its pages, we find that UN Resolution 242 demands that Israel return to Palestinians all land captured in the 1967 war.  

This is utter fiction. Carter and his ideological descendants have probably never heard of or paid much attention to Eugene Rostow, former U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs and one of the leading architects of UN Resolution 242. Rostow explained in The New Republic for Oct. 21, 1991, that the Resolution allows Israel to administer its conquered territories until a just and lasting peace in the Middle East is achieved and that “the Jews have the same right to settle there as they have to settle in Haifa.” 

Further, no Palestinian leader and few Western pundits have acknowledged the raw fact that there are no 1967 borders to which Israel is required to return. In fact, there are only armistice lines that have no bearing on future negotiations to determine final borders. The late Hugh Foot, Lord Caradon, formerly Britain’s ambassador to the United Nations and, along with Rostow, one of the drafters of Resolution 242, stated in the Beirut Daily Star on June 12, 1974, that “It would have been wrong to demand that Israel return to its positions of June 4, 1967, because those positions were undesirable and artificial.” 

Lord Caradon’s account of the meaning and history of the Resolution is supported by the remaining two framers, Arthur Goldberg and Baron George-Brown, who are equally explicit in asserting its original intention. Resolution 242 is a pro-Israel and not, as constantly misreported, a pro-Palestinian article. Yet in the interests of peace, Israel has fruitlessly surrendered much of its war gains in Gaza and the West Bank, creating unnecessary misery for itself.  

It follows that Israel’s enemies, and antisemites in general, are either credulous or savage or both. Generally speaking, their leaders are political operators with gelatinous souls, concerned mainly for their personal safety and privilege and cathected on the Islamic voting bloc. Moreover, far too many ordinary citizens are unable to distinguish between a forgery (e.g., "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion") and a scrupulous work of historical documentation (e.g., the aforementioned "From Time Immemorial"). They are culpably deaf and blind, as Richard Ibrahim indicates, to the purport of an ISIS audio recording titled And Kill Them Wherever You Find Them (Koran 9:5) that pronounces the jihadist worldview of Islam: “The battle with the Jews is a religious one and not a national or populist one! It is not a battle for land, soil, or borders! In fact, it is a war that is legitimized by the Book and the Sunnah.”

It's not Tango's fault he hasn't been around Tumble Town much, not really. What can he say? When he gets into a redstone project, he really gets into a redstone project, and he knows that Jimmy knows that. But he can't help but think that maybe he should've come around a bit more often...if only so he could have more context for why his soulmate is currently no taller than his boots. Frankly, it's the most adorable thing he's seen in his life. (And Jimmy doesn't quite have the heart to tell him to stop when Tango starts carrying his tiny rancher around everywhere he goes.) OR: Scar tries to get Tango to stop carrying around the shrunken Sheriff, but his words go in one ear and out the other. Not that Jimmy really minds all that much when it's Tango.

The more i watched Empires season 2 the more i just got my annoyed by stuff. The constant use of the word lore to make up for the fact that Joel didn't take the story seriously so why should anyone else take it seriously. i don't wanna watch Joel half ass a storyline while other characters take it so seriously

The Toy storyline that should have been a one off but because of Joel made it insufferable to watch anything with Jimmy in it cause there would inevitably be that dumb joke in it. Jimmy has a whole western theme going on and it gets ruined because of one overblown joke when i wanted to see him be an actual cowboy and be taken seriously and not be shrunken down to make the toy thing work.

Sorry, last few days were crazy. Back to the MotW summaries.

So basically, in this session Grome, the groundskeeper said he had business to take care of in the basement, not to bother him, these are the things he usually does he'd need someone else to do, and then to Tabitha "If I'm not out by the end of the movie. Evacuate the theatre."

So the list of things were usual shit like "lawn, bathrooms, check boilers". When Malachi went to cut grass though he immediately had tiny men yelling at him about breaking the treaty and how this meant war. Jimmy, who spent the most time with Grome, had to figure out what was wrong about what was happening. He remembers Grome used to measure grass before cutting it, and suspects we did, in fact, break a treaty. They find a magical bush and go into it, becoming tiny like the people yelling at them.

They find out they're now at the Council of the Greencaps, who explain that the Theatre was built by the gnomes on Greencap land, under certain conditions, including that, as Greencaps gain health and magic through plant growth, and conversely, lose it as plants are hurt, the grass could only be cut a certain amount. They mention a "Mr. Knox" (The theatre is named the Edward Knox Theatre). Negotiations go poorly and Malachi uses a move that lets him "run away from danger, into a different, but equally bad situation". He ends up in the bathroom, still shrunken, and discovers a budding community of seamonkeys. Thed later does the bathroom and rolled high enough to, without ever learning they existed, slaughter them.

Malachi gets Jimmy to take him back to the bush where they summon a fairy, and use the empty whitecap from the redcap mystery to help the Greencaps recover their magic.

Then Jimmy goes to check on the boilers and discovers another blue guy flying around it, trying to lower the pressure, saying something bad is happening in the basement. He introduced himself as Andy the Anti-Gremlin. Jimmy befriends him, and the movie ends. They evacuate the theatre of people, then tell the Greencaps and Andy who also leave. The party asks themselves if they should leave. Grome's still down there. Someone says

"Well. Then I guess we haven't finished evacuating."

Thed puts his hand on the doorknob to the basement.

After reading a shit ton of... Totally normal fanfiction for an hour straight, I've come to the head canon that Jimmy absolutely hates being called a toy, as he always has, but not for the same reasons. Originally, he hated being called a toy because people associated him with woody, plus the fact that he looked like an off brand one when they'd shrunken him. But... Cue one night at a party with the empires crew where he was drunk after 5 bottles of alcohol, Joel taking him back home, equally drunk, and a one night stand where he was fucked until he saw stars and Joel repeatedly calling him a toy that more than provided to reaching his... Y'know. So now whenever people call him a toy he isn't mad... Quite the opposite, actually.

i thought about it a bit more, and i have another branch of the au/hc/whatever the hell this is.

jimmy, when hes possessing ghost, has red eyes that match his form when hes outside of ghosts body. gavin knows when jimmys possessing ghost, however toast just sees ghost being murderous and goes "ah... hes overly stressed again... perhaps he needs his calming tea ^-^"

when they DO get together, gavin and jimmy agree that itd be kinda weird if they kissed while jimmy was inhabiting ghosts body, so they just have to deal with gavin only feeling a weird pressure on his lips when jimmy kisses him. (like jello...)

also, toast and ghost decide one day to check out an old abandoned house in the middle of nowhere, and... ghost breaks down, because thats where he used to live. yknow... gregory casket. jimmy, instead of immediately possessing him, just... watches. he evaluates some things.

and realizes his demonic urge to kill and destroy has faded. just a tiny bit. hes become... more human. it disgusts him.

(ofc they calm ghost down and ghost comments on how he didnt black out that time. jimmy feels bad about himself because!! hes not supposed to feel sympathy or compassion!!! let alone love!!! ew!! domesticity is gross!! bleh!!)

he complains to gavin about it and they discover that ever since gavin and him have been hanging out more and more, jimmy's power has been... not shrunken, per say, just redirected.

it makes him feel vulnerable.

he lashes out. possesses ghost more often and kills meaningless people with an anger hes only felt once before. it all happens within a week, and he realizes something. it isnt ONLY anger.

its grief.

grief over losing his ability to blindly kill. grief over losing his murderous tendencies. grief over gaining COMPASSION and HUMANITY. grief over falling in love for the first time.

of course he grieves. hes been a serial killer for so long, it makes sense to mourn the changes hes experienced. but at the same time, hed never change a thing.

he goes back to ghosts home in ghosts body, covered in multiple peoples blood. (hes not sure how he got here, but it infuriates him that he can just automatically find it no matter how far)

toast is there, fussing over the host's injuries (since when did ghost get that cut? he... should be more careful) and jimmy... jimmy exits the body, and sobs.

he watches the love toast feels for ghost, and promises one thing to himself: while he cant guarentee he'll never kill again, he can make himself human... for gavin, toast and ghost.

he just needs to figure out how to make himself a host, so that he doesnt hurt the man hes attached himself to (in more ways than one) he WANTS to be apart of humanity. he realizes hes hugging his host when he opens his eyes again, and realizes hes been subtly seeing ghost as his... well, as his brother. it hurts, and hes angry at that conclusion, but hes too tired to deny it. he falls asleep outside of ghosts body for the first time, and finally feels human.

so yeah idk how it sorta turned into a fanfic buuuut i think i like the concept :D if theres any spelling mistakes,,, no theres not,,,, and if its kindaaa ooc then uhm. hmm. well i havent watched vt in atleast 2 years so theres bound to be some mistakes :P

Dw too much about being OOC, I think a fun thing with the medium is that canon is flexible. Plus, you have development from A to B, so I don’t think it’s too inane a concept! Wha- HOW DID I MISS THIS??? Okay so...SO. Western Duo. Scar and Jimmy. VERY fun combo :3

I can't say I ship it on a romantic level (I'm too loyal to Ranchers during the crossover for that lmao). BUT I do like them as a combo. Scar is wholesome chaos, and he often is a wonderful friend to Jimmy in the crossover. I will say this: the scenes where Scar tries to get Jimmy to just...roll with the punches and take the positive side of being compared to Woody into account? It's very sweet, and quite heartfelt despite how silly it is. Jimmy even takes the time to listen. But I also sometimes wish Jimmy had someone on his side completely, because a part of me always hurts a bit knowing he had to put up with those jokes at all when he (as a character) clearly didn't like them.

Coming from Scar, a Disney fan at heart and a good friend, his comments about Sheriff Woody were ENTIRELY supportive and genuine. But I also wish Jimmy had someone in his corner speaking up against the toy bit entirely rather than trying to get Jimmy to accept it. (And Scar laughed and poked fun at Jimmy's shrunken state even when it canonically upset the Sheriff, which was funny but also like...damn, give the guy a break.)

BUT beyond that, they are a WONDERFULLY chaotic pair with fantastic positive vibes overall! I'd love to see them team together during the Life series because, with Scar's insane Life series antics and Jimmy's ability to get on anyone's bad side without really trying, I think it would make for a steller and entertaining team up. They'd be loyal to the end with plenty of plot and comedic relief sprinkled in, but also would probably die quickly without anyone else there to stop them from being idiots xD

I know Nightwing is sexy (nice body, especially nice ass) but why is he your #1 Hero?

That’s actually a good question. It really made me think for a bit.

I guess there’s a lot of things that led to me settling on Dick Grayson, but ultimately I really like his sense of responsibility and justice that he got from being raised by Batman and looking up to Superman. He has a lot of history, relationships with a lot of fun characters, and he even got to be Batman. He’s been a sidekick, a leader, and a solo act. He’s a really flexible character (figuratively and literally), so you get to see lots of types of stories with him. He even recently got superpowers temporarily and before he lost them, he went to Superman to be like “Look, I’m like you now!” and they spent a really heartfelt moment where Superman showed him a view of Earth that only someone with powers like him could see. It was really cathartic seeing Dick finally get to live like his childhood hero for a little. I really like stories like that. When a writer knows how to write Dick Grayson/ Nightwing, they really write him well.

I used to be a fan of Marvel comics. My father is a Marvel fan, so when I began my foray into comics, I started with those. I would jump around reading different series. I liked Spider-Man, the X-Men, Hulk, the concept of the Sentry (mainly The Age of the Sentry miniseries that parodies silver age comics; a lot of his other stuff was a bit too edgy), and Deadpool, but I realized I wasn’t really into the Marvel universe as a whole. I read comics that focused on the world like Civil War and Secret Wars, but I never got as into all of it.

As I thought about which books I’d read next, I realized I really liked the DC universe from the video games I’d play. Especially Batman. I started getting really into learning about Batman, his allies, his villains, his iconic comic runs. In particular, I learned more about Nightwing. I had been a fan of the Teen Titans cartoon as a kid, but I still always figured that outside of that Robin was just a one-dimensional goofy sidekick.

My father told me he had an omnibus of the New Teen Titans series by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, so I started reading that and I realized just how fun of a character Robin actually was to read about. I read Chuck Dixon’s Nightwing series too and I realized that he was really what I was looking for in a hero. He had been around since 1940, so there was a lot of history to pull from. He was connected to Batman, a character everyone loves, so he reaps the benefits of being able to regularly interact with the multifaceted characters that appear in Batman stories. He lead the Teen Titans, so we also got to see him in a leadership role and it allowed him to be defined by something outside of Batman too.

Honestly, one of the things that endeared me to him the most early one was his name, “Nightwing.” Those less savvy with the history of DC comics might assume that name is derived from Batman, as Batman is named after a winged creature of the night. His name actually comes from Superman. When Superman and Jimmy Olsen were shrunken by Braniac and stuck in the miniature Kryptonian city of Kandor, Superman lost his powers and took up the new mantle of the hero “Nightwing” with Jimmy Olsen as his sidekick “Firebird” (Nightwing and Firebird being Kryptonian gods). Like I said, despite being raised by Batman, Superman is Dick’s favorite hero, so when he wanted to discard the name of “Robin,” he chose a name inspired by his idol. Honestly, Marv Wolfman is a genius for that. Wolfman really redefined the character of Dick Grayson and it’s because of him that Nightwing is my favorite.

There was also that time right before the New 52 happened where Nightwing became Batman. When Bane broke Batman’a back in Knightfall, Bruce honored Azrael with taking up the mantle of “Batman.” Dick became really jealous and insecure of that decision. Having been with Batman longer than anyone else as the first Robin, he figured he deserved the right to be Batman. Years later when Batman died, Dick decided for himself that he would be the new Batman, with Bruce’s son Damian as his Robin. It was a really interesting inspection of Dick’s character. He was really unsure of himself being Batman. But Dick is also a character who cracks jokes when fighting crime, so we also got a very different take on Batman than what was the norm for the time. One who was more lighthearted. There’s just a lot you can do with his history with Batman.

Idk, Batman and Superman are my other two favorite heroes, so it’s just really great following a character who’s inspired by both of them. He’s like the perfect outcome of what you get when you mix Batman’s stealth and detection with Superman’s charisma and sense of justice.

Also, he’s hot.
