She had stopped by the river to collect water, realizing only then she had been humming. She found herself doing so at times when in need to soothe herself after something had made her heart race in a way that was unbecoming for a guard, let alone a captain. But too often she was prey of her own emotions, and had to walk away. "I know when I'm being followed," she finally spoke up, turning enough to look above her shoulder. "Come out."

Her voice jolted him back to the present, and he raised himself back from his crouched position, boots crunching upon fallen leaves to properly alert her of his presence as opposed to skulking about. “Tauriel,” a smile bloomed on his face when she met his gaze, and he crouched next to her, swirling a finger in the cool river water. “I thought we were not to go out alone?”

Tauriel allowed herself to smile, pleased to see Legolas but always careful to keep a proper distance, least his father or others could misinterpret their relationship. "Forgive me, I did not know it was you," she answered as her fingers moved away from a dagger at her belt, "Your father allowed me to leave so I could finish hunting the last spider orcs. Again." She had almost betrayed her frustration there, since she was on a fool's errand meant to be repeated again and again. It was not a job that Mirkwood could complete alone but Thranduil would not hear it. "Does he know you have left?"

Uncle Thorin headcanons nobody can dissuade me from, part 2: young uncle Thorin

during Dís' pregnancies he acts like a rock for her and her nervous husband, while he is secretly terrified when she goes into labour

he weeps the first time he gets to hold his nephews (and the 10 times afterwards)

he handles Fíli like a bomb in the beginning, because he is scared of accidently dropping or hurting him

after Fíli is weaned and Kíli is born, Dís and her husband have a hard time, since Kíli is a very restless baby. To give them some more breathing room, little Fíli spends the next few years in a sling tied around Thorin's chest and accompanies him everywhere. Thorin is more than a little sad, when this time ends, but fortunately soon Kíli is weaned and then Thorin gets to carry him around everywhere

he gives them cute nicknames. Fíli is his jewel and Kíli his gem.

he goes into crisis mode whenever one of the lads coughs more than once (fortunately Óin is very patient)

when Fíli and Kíli are small, they often climb into his bed at night, for example when they are cold or scared. It usually ends with Thorin waking up with at least one of Kíli's feet in his face or an elbow in his gut

he cuddles the two all the time and after little Gimli is born, he gets the same treatment

whenever all of them get together, Thorin usually ends up with three Dwarflings on his lap. (he found a way to stack them. Dís doesn't know what to think about that)

the only reason Fíli and Kíli don't call him adad is the fact, that Thorin would never claim that title out of respect for his late brother-in-law

when they are all of a sudden grown-ups, he sorely misses the time when they were small enough to sit on his knee or come running for a hug

he has a box hidden under his bed with his nephews' old things. He gets a little misty-eyed whenever he looks at their tiny baby boots. (one time he shows them to Dwalin, which ends with both of them sobbing. They don't speak of this afternoon)

he is in general a lot more affectionate and caring with them than on the quest, which is one of the reasons Fíli and Kíli are disturbed by his behaviour starting in mirkwood

My favourite thing about the Hobbit is that both Bilbo and Thorin are not considered attractive by their own peoples beauty standards, but they find the other insanely attractive

Peregrin Took + A Man in Armor by Rembrandt

This is part of a series of illustrations I've done which is reimagining old oil paintings ("renaissance paintings", though not all of them are from the time of the renaissance so I will use that term sparingly haha)

Rembrandt depicted the young man in the original painting as weighed down by his armor and weapons (as they do appear sightly too big for him)-- and yet having determined thoughts about the possible battle ahead. I thought this extra fitting to portray this as a hobbit, and since I already did one with Merry, I chose Pippin!

So i know we all like to hc that legolas knew at least aragorn before the quest, or the elves of imlardis.

But honestly, au in which legolas is genuinely just some random elf that showed up to deliver a message, was roped into the council and saw the most amazing oppurtunity to fuck with everyone and took the elf spot in the party?

Like, no-one knows who tf he is, he’s just a messenger (no one knows he’s thranduil’s son) and elrond gave him a seat at the council out of indulgence. And then this one motherfucker no one knows ends up joining one of, if not the most, important quest in ME.

Legolas, knowing damn well no one’s got a clue who tf he is: hold on, i sense an opportunity to do the funniest shit ever.

And after he volunteered himself, it’s not like elrond can just go: no, wait a minute.

Legolas has got the audacity. He’s sensing all the imlardis elves’ daggers in their eyes and is full on cackling in his head.

They are having a horrible time and legolas is thriving!

The walkers themselves don’t know untill after the quest.

Tauriel rapidly climbed the last rocks, arrow ready and steely gaze following the last of them, despite the anger that was rushing through her body. She took the shot. It was a curious thing, this grief that Thraundiel had briefly spoken of to her, different from the kind she had felt for her parents; there had been guilt at the edge of it, because she had made her own personal duty to save Kili and had failed, and instead of despair it had turned into quick to raise anger and tears that would not come out. That anger had just resurfaced, realizing that Legolas was there, because the only thing she cared for left was him, and he didn't seem to share any concern for his own wellbeing or position.

"You shouldn't be here," she nearly snapped at him, making her way back, "It's dangerous and your father's army is far from us. Your father is far from us, he will be furious." He had shown her compassion and they had parted more amicably than they could have, but she had no doubt that the king would not want his son anywhere near the elf who had left Mirkwood to never return. "Go home, Legolas. This forest is full of dangers."

The strangest Tolkien fandom history rewrite I've seen lately from people who make hating the show their entire personality is this shift in pretending that The Hobbit films were just as lauded as the original trilogy.

I get the most intense cuteness aggression when it comes to hobbits. I would happily risk having my face bitten off by the Shire equivalent of a mongoose that is Bilbo Baggins for a chance to cuddle him for a few seconds. With the exception of the Sackville-Bagginses, there is not a single hobbit in the entire Shire I would not gladly squeeze the breath out of like Lenny in Of Mice and Men and should they choose to stab me for it, I can except the consequences

Which got me thinking

Which race in Middle Earth gets the worst cuteness aggression around hobbits?

First there's the race of Men, who obviously have a lot of cuteness aggression around hobbits. Aragorn gets it. Eowyn gets it. Boromir definitely gets it. Faramir gets it too but isn't sure what to do about it. Eomer breaks a spear in half trying to deal with it. Denethor does not get hobbit based cuteness aggression which is why he died in a fiery inferno. This is balanced out by Barliman Butterbur who has to fight the inner demons every time a hobbit walks into the Prancing Pony

Then there's the dwarves, which....I think it's a toss up over if they get it worse than humans, because on the one hand, the size difference, which is undoubtedly a contributing factor, is less intense with dwarves. On the other hand, they express affection a lot more violently then Men tend to do, so maybe it's a wash?

The dark horse is the Elves, because in LOTR and the Hobbit, they seem a little too serene to experience cuteness aggression, but I know in other books, they do get violent sometimes, so maybe a bi-product of the elves kind of mellowing out is that they lost their tendency toward hobbit-based cuteness aggression. Or they just got better at hiding it maybe?

(If you've read the Silmarillion and any of the other Legendarium books I haven't gotten around to yet, put in the tags which elf you think is most likely to get cuteness aggression around hobbits. :thumbsup:)

*average amount of cuteness aggression experienced by Wizards is a statistical error* Saruman does NOT get cuteness aggression around hobbits. Radagast experiences mild cuteness aggression around hobbits. Spiders Gandalf, who lives nowhere and experiences intense cuteness aggression around every hobbit he has ever met is an outlier and should not be counted.
