Art I made to celebrate my involvement with Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope DX as a pixel artist!
At the moment I can't share any art I worked on for the game juuust yet, but I can't wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I've been a huge fan of the series ever since the Kickstarter, so being able to work with the team has been a dream come true--thank you so much, Yacht Club!! 🙌

My Favorite Games of 2023.
Hi. Hello. Thanks ever so much for clicking on this page. Happy to have you.
First thing's first: I'm a little freak when it comes to video games. I don't feel the need to beat most games I play. From Software is one of my favorite studios in the industry and I've never finished a single one of their games. This means, fortunately, that I get to play a LOT more games than the average bear.
I've written up some blurbs about my top ten favorite games from 2023, but before that here's the list of every game I remember playing this year that left any sort of lasting impact on me (in no particular order):
Dead Space Remake Resident Evil 4 Remake F-Zero 99 Humanity Dredge Metroid Prime Remastered Anemoiaplois Alan Wake 2 Baldur’s Gate 3 LoZ Tears of the Kingdom Counter Strike 2 Hunt Showdown El Paso Elsewhere Jusant Slay the Princess| Remnant II The Finals Street FIghter 6 Lethal Company BattleBit Remastered Don’t Scream Homebody The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog Pizza Tower World of Horror Super Mario Wonder Mr. Sun’s Hatbox Fifa 23 Sea of Stars (Demo) Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update)
And the games I played that were NOT released in 2023:
Unpacking Persona 4 Golden Picross 7 The Order 1886 Shovel Knight Dig Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Spider-Man: Miles Morales Pac-Man Championship Edition DX Project Zomboid Quake LoZ The Minish Cap Drill Dozer Wario Land 4 Pokemon Pinball Resident Evil Revelations Summer of ‘58 Trackmania TwinCop We Were Here Visage Cursed Halo CE Half-Life 2 (I probably play this once per year) Witch Hunt Red Dead Redemption 2 Cyberpunk 2077 Borderlands 3 Brutal Legend Cultic Slay the Spire PUBG Rez Infinite Batman Arkham City Alan Wake Alan Wake: American Nightmare Max Payne LoZ: Majora’s Mask 3DS Metroid Prime Metroid Prime 2 Tunic Everhood Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII Remake GOODBYE WORLD Yakuza: Like a Dragon Critters for Sale Dome Keeper Phasmophobia Hades Nintendo Switch Sports
Now that you understand the kind of freak you're dealing with…
Let's dive into my top ten favorite games from this objectively fucked up year.
10. El Paso Elsewhere Developed by Texas indie studio Strange Scaffold, El Paso Elsewhere is a Max Payne-clone with vampires, an opinionated narrator, and lots and lots of bullet time. As a small studio punching well above their weight class, Strange Scaffold leans into abstract, PlayStation 1 minimalism when it comes to visuals and pairs them with a soundtrack that will make your hands sweat. The vibes are here and they're ready for the end of the world. I'm personally also a big fan of everything this studio stands for.
9. Mr. Sun's Hatbox I want you to imagine Metal Gear Solid V. Now I want you to imagine that game as a 2D, level-based, slapstick platformer you can play with up to three friends. If you think that sounds stupid, you'd be right. And it's beautiful. As you build up a secret army of soldiers with various skills (and disorders), you'll start to develop *favorites*. This game constantly asks if you're willing to send those favorites on a harrowing mission and risk losing them forever… or if you'd rather send an idiot you recently captured who blinks constantly and can't kill anyone without fainting.
8. Dredge Every year I feel like I find one game that falls into the “just one more round” category, and baby… Dredge was it for 2023. As a weary fisherman in strange waters, you'll make the most out of your 12 measly hours of sunlight only for your daily voyages to inevitably pull you into the darkness of night, and night is when things get weird. Rocks emerge from the fog that you swear weren't there before, your equipment malfunctions, and you're pretty sure you just saw something in the water… something big. Despite only containing a small collection of islands, the world of Dredge manages to feel vast - perhaps vast enough to swallow you whole.
7. Resident Evil 4 Remake I was curious to see what sort of changes would be made to the timeless classic and father of modern 3rd person shooters, Resident Evil 4. I wasn't let down. RE4 Remake takes all the things that didn't age well about the original, tossed them out, and replaced them with only good things. And MORE things! It's campy, fun, and better than a game of bingo.
6. Jusant I really feel like this one didn't get the recognition it deserves. Jusant is a rock climbing game that combines the quiet contemplation of Journey with the mechanical specificity of Death Stranding. Unlike Death Standing, though, there is very little story to interrupt your flow. There are plenty of collectible bits to find for those curious to learn more about what happened before the events of the game, but the environmental storytelling does most of the heavy lifting. For me, the joy of the game comes from how it feels. Right trigger controls your right hand grip, and left trigger controls left hand grip. Plan your route, manage your stamina, and climb high above the clouds in search of answers.
5. F-Zero 99 This. Shit. Slaps. I've never been a big F-Zero guy, but this MADE me one. The “battle royale”, 99 player format is the perfect fit for the ruthless, high octane world of the game. Races last about three minutes, and friend, they are the most intense, white-knuckled three minutes of your life. The decision to make your boost meter the same as your health meter started in F-Zero 64 (I believe), and it is so much more HARROWING in this game when another player could side-swipe you mere meters from the finish line and blow you to bits. Sadly it's only playable via Switch Online, but it made me cheer, laugh, and scream enough this year to earn a spot in my top 5.
4. Alan Wake 2 Remedy makes weird games that also manage to exist in the AAA space and for that I will forever love them. Although Alan Wake 2 resembles a 3rd person shooter survival horror, I'd honestly say it's more of a narrative game than anything else. There's sidequests, there's puzzles, there's upgradeable skills, but at the end of the day the characters, world, and story are what kept me playing. If you haven't checked them out recently, you should definitely watch a story recap of the original games before diving into this sequel, but the wild swings for the fences this game takes are well worth that small price of admission. There's a god damn musical number, for Christ's sake.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom I've really got nothing to say about this game that most people don't already know. It's incredible. The fact that Nintendo made a game that redefined an entire genre and then made a SEQUEL to it that ups the ante is remarkable. To be honest, I've only cleared the Rito, Zora, and Goron cities. I got a bit tired of exploring the depths and guiding Koroks to their friends, but I can't deny the sheer level of complexity and polish on display here. I saw someone on TikTok build a functioning Mecha Godzilla in this game. Good God. I've heard that the ending of this game is one of the best in the franchise, and if I'd seen it this year then it may have wound up higher on my list, but for the time being I'll continue picking up this masterpiece from time to time, chipping away at it until the day comes that I can finally smack the tits off thicc Ganondorf.
2. Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update) I know I'm gonna get shit for this, but I don't care. This year was the 25th anniversary of Half-Life and Valve released an update that made playing it (and it's online Death Match) much more accessible. I threw it on my Steam Deck out of curiosity, expecting to play for 20 minutes. I could not put it down. It is unbelievable how modern this game still feels. I simply had so much fun sprinting through the corridors of Black Mesa with a dozen weapons strapped to my back, blasting aliens and military Spec-Op chumps as a 24(?!) year old theoretical physicist.
1. Baldur's Gate III This game is fucked up, man. The sheer amount of writing in this game scares me. We can all talk about how BIG this game is, it deserves it, but the thing BG3 does better than any other role playing game I have ever experienced is actually encourage roleplaying. I've played through Act I four times now, with four different groups of friends, and it has felt fresh every time. I have seen the same events play out in so many different ways that it boggles the mind, but in every one of those play sessions I see players asking themselves “What would my lil guy do here?” rather than "what is the best thing to do here?" The game rewards players constantly for just trying shit and the D&D 5e rule set means playing like the character you said you were from the start leads to frequent Points of Inspiration. Maybe one day I'll see the end of this story (probably not), but I don't have to in order to feel a connection with BG3's world, characters, and most impressively, the characters I made myself.
Honorable Mentions for 2023
5. Dave the Diver 4. Homebody 3. Sea of Stars 2. Humanity 1. Super Mario Wonder
Top 5 Favorites NOT from 2023
5. Metroid Prime 4. Final Fantasy VII Remake 3. Cursed Halo (Halo CE Mod) 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 1. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (3DS)
Games I didn't have a chance to play from 2023 but still want to when I find more time...

Development on Shovel of Hope DX is in full swing over at Yacht Club Games, and Mole Knight is in on it! When the burly burrower receives his invitation, however, he mistakes it for an adventure of his own…
After witnessing the grandeur that is (Or, will be) a playable Mole Knight in Shovel of Hope, Mod Mona and I have been joking about Mole of Moling being real at last, which subsequently coerced me to write and voice this scenario just in time for Shovel Knight's 10th! I highly recommend opening the script for this audio in another tab if you'd like to follow along.
This is our longest voicework project yet, and we had a lot of fun with it!
— Mod Plague Minion (Formerly Mod Tinker)
(Disclaimer: There are two instances of a door knock sound effect present in the above audio, and I would like to stress that neither of them are real; I've muffled both instances as to not trick or startle any listeners!)

To think there was a period of time where I thought I wouldn't return to voice acting#Hopefully after I start voice training I can put my transfeminine voice to good use#Happy soon-to-be tenth anniversary Shovel Knight! And uh... condolences to Mole Knight. Mole of Moling shall be real yet!

To mark the 10th anniversary of Shovel Knight, the #1 indie game that first came out on Nintendo 3DS and Steam before it was ported over to other platforms (i.e. OS X, Linux, PS, Switch), I went ahead and pieced together an 80's inspired portrait with him holding the shovel way high and running like a proud fi-- uh, I mean, hero he is. Excuse me.
For this background alone, I used spraypaint to give it a much more inspired tone on a certain album that always helped me cool down with a much needed breather after a lot of work was done. If you haven't, I suggest doing so right away!
My first time with Shovel Knight dates back five years ago when I got the game for my birthday present, exactly a few months before COVID-19 made me stay home and worked hard on animation. I was able to get through the Shovel of Hope campaign while going for a perfect run without having to lose a single life or any health whatsoever. And once it was done, I thanked the boys the Order of No Quarter for finally coming to their senses and it was a fascinating experience. No problems were needed.
Now to relax and wait for that DX edition so I can be patient for another round. But entirely different! Or was it physical?

So that Partner Showcase and Indie World, huh?
In all honesty, this one kinda just went by me. Somewhat due to the lack of interesting stuff in it, but mostly due to you-probably-know-what. But nevertheless, let's cover this double whammy of a presentation
Balatro: Friends of Jimbo; DISTRACTION DANCE MUSIC HEARD. BEING THOROUGHLY DISTRACTED Neva; I swear I've seen this kind of game in like five different forms yet they all look the same. They're like Fromsoft games Moth Kubit; Corporately cute, I suppose Coffee Talk Tokyo; I don't drink coffee, so I can't really get the hype Sea of Stars; This just looks like the same kind of basic JRPG that you would see in any given anime when they need a "video game" to fill time PowerWash Simulator: Shrek DLC; someBODY ONCE TOLD ME THE WORLD WAS GONNA WASH ME! Morsels; Why does this look like Cuphead plus Little Nightmares to me? Date Everything; Anyone else remember Chairem Anime? Or at least skipped to Sofaden? Peglin; Isn't this the kind of game that's best suited for mobile? Wobbly Life; So Human Fall Flat but free roam? Pico Park 2; If there's one thing Grian taught me, its that this game is far more toxic than the Indie World guys are making it out to be Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope DX; You're telling me there's still stuff to add for Shovel Knight on Switch? I thought that was all burnt through Europa; Kinda getting BOTW vibes, NGL Cuisineer; ...So is it a roguelike but Overcooked or something? On Your Tail; Wonder how much furry you-know-what has been uploaded to you-know-where already? Metal Slug Tactics; So did SNK sell off Metal Slug or something? How does this count as Indie then? The Plucky Squire; ...Honestly I got nothin' for this one Pizza Tower; Y'ALL READY TO GET FUNKY?!
Tetris Forever; You guys think there are actually 99 Tetrises by this point? Star Overdrive; Why is this giving me Marvel vibes? Goat Simulator 3; It's Goat Sim. What else can I say? Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st; Basic-looking RPG. I got nothing Star Wars Hunters; Is this Star Wars Overwatch or something? ...okay S.T.A.L.K.E.R.; What is this, "I Can't Believe It's Not COD"? Worms Armageddon; Alright, where's my Holy Hand Grenade? Disney Dreamlight Valley; What was new within this that wasn't here the last time? The Patrick Star Game; Is this a goat sim-like game? No, this is Patrick Fitness Boxing 3; I imagine if you made this into a VR game, it would become the new Wiimote-into-TV Capcom Fighting Collection 2; Power Stone & co rise from the grave (Except the one Capcom fighting game series that's all about things rising from graves) MVC Fighting Collection; Break out the Mango Sentinels and find where your curly mustaches at, because mid-September is MAHVEL TIME, BAYBEE! Atelier Yumia; Honestly this looks like a poor mans Xenoblade to me Suikoden Iⅈ When will these sprite on 3d rpgs END?! Dragon Quest III HD-2D; (read above) Castlevania Dominus; Huh... neat Civilization VII; Let's just hope that Ghandi is as far away from this one as possible this time round Tales of Graces f; Wait, there's more to Tales of than just Lloyd and Yuri? Wow MySims: Cozy Bundle; Miis plus Sims make this, apparently FNAF: Help Wanted 2; har har har-har har har har-har har-har FNAF: Security Breach - Ruin; Dude, even the trailer was kind slow in framerate. That's how you know that this game has it rough Epic Mickey: Rebrushed; Unless I'm mistaken, I think that was actually the first time we've gotten a look at Tomorrow City. Every other location in the Wasteland was shown off before, but not here Tales of the Shire; Neat Just Dance 2025; Just Dance must have found the Fountain of Youth with how little dying its doing Funko Fusion; This just looks like a lesser Lego Dimensions, to be honest EA Sports FC 25; Dude, who even cares about EA Sports games? (Outside of our goat and savior Madden 08) Lego Horizons Adventures; I just want to know if and/or when the next Tt Lego game will be Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma; In all honestly, the whole "Japanese" aesthetic has been far overplayed to me. It's completely lost any luster in my eyes Yakuza Kiwami; FOUND YOU ON SWITCH, KIRYU-CHAN!!!
All in all, kind of uneventful. But at least not in terms of the rest of today, because SONIC 3 TRAILER, LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!

Welcome to Six Miles of The Shovel!
This Project is based on the concept of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon (and yes can’t forget @ryunumber )
Just like Ryu from Street Fighter Shovel Knight is well known for appearing many different games. Ever since Shovel Knight was included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Assist Trophy it became very easy to do these connections. Where does the miles part come from? In this case, every number is a mile
Here’s a list of the games Shovel Knight has appeared in:
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (as an Assist Trophy)
- Blaster Master Zero
- Rivals of Aether
- Blade Strangers
- Brawhalla (as a skin)
- Cook, Serve, Delicious!
- Creepy Castle (as an NPC)
- C-Wars
- Fall Guys (as a costume)
- Dino Run DX
- Indie Pogo
- Move or Die
- Mutant Mudds Super Challenge
- Riverbond
- Road Redemption
- Runbow
- Runner 3
- Aegis Defenders (NPC)
- Azure Striker Gunvolt 2
- Blasphemous (as a painting)
- Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
- Just Shapes & Beats
- Pixel Noir
- The Reward: Tales of Alethrion
- Yooka-Laylee.
There could more guest appearances for Shovel Knight but right now 25 is a solid number so yeah, there’s the that Shovel Knight has appeared in these games.
What are the rules?
- Video games or other miscellaneous stuff included (movies, tv shows and books can be included if they have a connection to the video game)
- Social media will be our savior
- Parodies excluded
- Fan made projects excluded (unless is bought by a licensed company)
- Costumes excluded (however if a costume is considered a character it will be included as the character itself or I can make an exception)
- Skins included (only if it’s a model swap or texture change like in Minecraft and Fortnite)
How can I make a request?
Just ask me the name of the character with their home series so that way I can identify which character in particular you’re talking about (for example: Black Knight from Fire Emblem Path of Radiance) because of course there are characters that can have the same name.
What is a Shovel Number?
Each character will have a Shovel Number which is a number of connections directed to Shovel Knight (For example: Mario has a Shovel Number of 1 via smash ultimate).
What about limited time events?
Yes, limited time characters can be included however it will be known as a “Limited Shovel Number”.
What is the limit of Shovel Numbers?
It has a limit of 6 (for example: if a character has a Shovel Number of 7 then that won’t count).
What is it with parodies?
Parodies are simply a copycat of an existing character (for example: Symbiote Cat is a parody of Super Mario).
Is there something about fanmade projects?
If a project is fanmade that won’t count unless a licensed company has bought it (for example: DBX aka Screwattack from Rooster Teeth Games made a death battle animation between Studio MDHR’s Cuphead vs Joey Drew Studios Mascot Bendy. Joey Drew Studios bought the animation after they made a deal with Rooster Teeth Games by importing BATIM to home consoles, thanks to this the animation is now official to the Bendy Franchise)
What about Minecraft and Fortnite Skins?
If a skin is a model swap or texture change it won’t matter it will still be the character itself (although there are a few negative things about it).
What about SSBU spirits?
They’re the souls of the character itself.
What about Mii Fighter Costumes from SSBU?
We’ll get to that point later.
As of now this is part 1 of my project so get ready for part 2

Back from another trip and HOO BOY I brought back a few things! To start with though, here are JUST the things I got with my partner after visiting their local flea market and a few goodwills.
Most of this was from just three bags at one Goodwill that seemingly all came from one household getting rid of a bunch of stuff. In total they were only a bit over 20 bucks, but my partner found enough Monster High parts to be worth that much alone, let alone my picks of the lot and the other unwanted items (they work with kids, so they'll find another happy home sooner or later!)
Highlights I pulled from just this set of bags include:
IRL Minecraft Bow (no arrows)
A (recently tested functional) Bop It
A 2012 TMNT RC kart and controller (currently non-functional, may require new batteries)
A couple of clay art projects, one of which is a small turtle with a familiar blue mask painted on, and the other is a dinosaur with a shifting color light that shines through
The Shovel Knight Arby's DLC stickers (yes, a real thing that happened. Soon to be redundant thanks to DX, but oh well)
A ceramic cat statue I gave to my grandma on the way back home, which she tenderly placed alongside similar items in one of those glass cases for small things that grandmas naturally acquire
A frog valentine's day solar powered dancing guy. My mom loves those dancing guys but hates frogs so she had mixed feelings about this gift.
And the holy grail item, a 6 inch collector edition Classic Sonic figure, including display base and nearly all of his original accessories, save for a single splayed hand. This was what got us to buy the bags, as I figured the base would be a useful addition to my Sonic figure display, and we also spotted only the head in another bag. This guy alone would go for 35-150 USD depending on condition, and while mine has got some rough spots, it's still the highlight piece of the find by far.
Individually purchased items from the Goodwills include:
Jimmy Neutron for 2 bucks. Good movie, shocked I only just now got it.
Splatoon 1 for 5 bucks. Preserving the single player and local modes are enough for me, but potential Pretendo workarounds mean I could still effectively have the whole game. Probably sold my original copy for at least 5 bucks in store credit anyways.
Shrek Mug. "Shrug" for short. 5 bucks. Enough said.
Webkinz Bullfrog for 3 bucks. I've had the small version for ages as one of my most beloved childhood toys, so getting the full sized lad was cathartic. Here they now sit together in my plush collection, brothers united.
Items from the flea market include:
Symmetra funko for 4 bucks. No turret, predictably, but it'll do until I give her a custom real figure later.
Raddinyan yokai watch mini statue. 2 bucks. My first Yokai Watch merch I guess?
3-in-1 dog lego set for 7 bucks. Love the lady I get these legos cheap from, she just plays with some sets partway before deciding to sell them for cheap. Especially nice when we found the same set at target later for 20-30 bucks.
Diddy Kong Racing lunchbox for 2 bucks. Felt like a neat enough thing even if not something I wanted too badly. Apparently it goes for 30 bucks online if I wanna flip it?
And that's not even all I brought home, but the rest will be highlighted in its own post.

How do you feel about "Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope DX"? People are mixed about it and some people are angry at Yacht Club Games. I'll still get it anyway.
Honestly, I'm interested just for all the playable characters and wanting to see how they'll work for platforming.
