Jacobi and McKellen as grand marshals of New York City's 2015 pride march.

All Good Omens (show) fans will know Derek Jacobi as the Metatron. His brief role on Doctor Who is also getting a lot of mention in recent posts, but I'm not going to talk about any of that.

Like his Vicious co-star Ian McKellen, Jacobi has had a long and illustrious career in theatre, television, and film. McKellen and Jacobi met when they were at Cambridge.

I'm not a huge fan of the Daily Mail, but this article, an interview with the two actors, is quite interesting. I'll just quote this part:

Jacobi says he came out to his mother when he was at university. ‘She said, “All young men, go through this phase, don’t worry.” I remember saying, “Don’t tell Dad.”’ He doesn’t know to this day if she did. ‘I think she did, but I don’t know. But they were wonderful, my parents, not much was said but they kind of knew, they got it.’

McKellen hasn’t heard his friend talk of this before. ‘That’s the first time I’ve heard that,’ he says, genuinely moved. ‘I never came out to my family. Biggest regret of my life.’ It turns out he didn’t even come out to Derek at university, even though it’s always been reported that he had something of a crush on him. 

‘Yes, I did fancy Derek, but I didn’t act on it, God, no. It was illegal, remember. I do get on my high horse about it, because it was so difficult. There were no gay clubs you could go to. No gay bars, no gay newspaper, nothing. What there was was a bit sleazy, I suspect. One of the reasons I became an actor was that you could meet gay people. Even then everything was difficult. When you went to America they asked, “Are you now, or have you ever been, homosexual?” I lied on the form. It was a different world.’

I want to talk about Vicious for a bit, the ITV britcom in which Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen play an aging gay couple, (respectively) a homemaker, Stuart Bixby, and an actor, Freddie Thornhill, for fourteen episodes.

Freddie (McKellen) tells Stuart (Jacobi) about a part he's hoping to get.

I had to add these for the Broadchurch reference.

It's a law that British actors of a certain age play this part.

I couldn't find one with Michael Sheen and the skull, but here he is in the role.

McKellen did the part again at 81 in an age-blind production.

Jacobi's big breakout was the titular role in I, Claudius on the BBC in 1976.

In the '90s, Jacobi played amateur sleuth and 12th century monk, Brother Cadfael on the ITV series.

I had watched some of Vicious before, but, spurred on by Jacobi's reappearance on Good Omens, looked for it again and watched both seasons a couple of weeks ago. Because I love a good fancast and Jacobi and Sheen (at least as Aziraphale) remind me a little of each other, I couldn't help but think that Jacobi and McKellen in their youth could have played a version of Aziraphale and Crowley. (There have been a couple of posts noting this about Jacobi, and that he might have been up for the part if it had been done soon after the book came out.)

I also think that Tennant and Sheen could have pulled off playing Freddie and Stuart in a flashback.

An even younger version of Freddie and Stuart does appear in the series, however, played by Luke Treadaway and Samuel Barnett.

Also good casting! They do a great job playing McKellen and Jacobi playing Freddie and Stuart.

Shoutout to this post by @ember-knights, that suggested Good Omens fans should check out Vicious for a glimpse of what life in the South Downs cottage might be. And also to other posts mentioning Vicious and Good Omens in the same breath, as well as comparing Sheen and Tennant to Jacobi and McKellen (which I probably reblogged but can't find right now).

Cast of Vicious: Frances de la Tour, Iwan Rheon, Philip Voss, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Marcia Warren (Wikipedia). (Yes, the upstairs neighbor (Rheon) does go on to play Ramsay Bolton on Game of Thrones. He's a sweetheart in this, though.)

Now, I don't think Crowley and Aziraphale are the same as Freddie and Stuart, by any means. Freddie and Stuart say quite cruel things to each other. The characters become deeper in the second season; it’s a little sweeter than the first. I enjoy the bitterness of the first season too, though. It is funny, and Good Omens fans may enjoy watching it if only to see Derek Jacobi (who plays the Metatron) in a comedy role and a role that's sympathetic, especially if they are not familiar with his large and impressive body of work.

I don't think Aziraphale and Crowley's life in the bookshop as a couple, not just a group of two, or life on the South Downs, would be exactly like this, but there are somehow some similarities that I don't even know how to begin to pinpoint or explicate.

Crowley and Aziraphale’s affection is always so palpable and that’s not always clear with Freddie and Stuart. Crowley and Aziraphale are so loving that, even when they're bickering, it's joyful, even when they're arguing, even when they're coming apart (temporarily) at the seams, their love is undeniable. I don’t even think their breakup was toxic; although they were desperate at that point and hurt each other badly, it wasn't what they wanted. Sometimes it's that way.

And, lest I'm putting you off Vicious here, the Ineffable Husbands are a high bar as love stories go, but you will get to see some love and affection between Freddie and Stuart too, and I'd really love to see these actors work together more. (I am happy with how the show ends up, by the way.)

Hi!!! Yes, yes I can! I actually wrote down everything I could remember from the panel like right after I saw it and just for some reason never posted it to tumblr. This is more like "things I can recall" than convo snippets but here you go!

This is from the 2023 BTVS Cast Reunion panel at C2E2 this past April for anyone confused/curious

*(CC - Charisma Carpenter, DB - David Boreanaz, JM - James Marsters, MB - Marc Blucas)

the moderator wasn’t great imo, like she didn’t really ask any show specific questions and I think only asked Marc like one or two questions directly but the cast were fantastic

CC’s family were there cause they’re from the area and so she gave them a shoutout and thanked us for the applause because it makes her look like the cool aunt (also she didn’t really swear in comparison to the rest of the cast and I think that may be why)

Also CC and DB have SO much chemistry its insane

DB was asked how broody he is in real life and he told a story about how someone earlier told him he looked really miserable XD and CC jumped in and talked about how giggly he is

MB talked about his audition process and how when it was down to him and the guy who wound up playing Parker and he had to chemistry read with SMG he blew his back out playing basketball and had to wear flip flops to the audition cause he couldn’t put his shoes on and basically didn’t do well because he was in pain but in an unconventional Hollywood move, JW called him up later and said he knew he could do it and to come back after SMG got back from vacation and try again

CC also talked about her audition process and told the story how she was stuck in traffic going from the Malibu Shores set to the offices in Burbank and her agent paged her “911” so she pulled over at a gas station to use the pay phone and her agent was like “where are you? they want to leave” and CC went “they are not leaving, tell them to order a pizza!” and then went on and nailed the audition to the point where she walked out and told her agent she got it before she was actually told she got it

DB talked about his audition process too and how he was spotted walking dogs and asked in to audition and his first round with Marcia Roberts they talked about Italian restaurants for like an hour and then she was like “oh we need you to read this”. And then when he went to the second round with more of the execs he started talking about restaurants again and eventually Greenie was like “okay we get it can you read?” So he did and the scene he read had Buffy kicking Angel off a motorcycle and there was a rocking chair that he kept trying to visualize as the motorcycle and eventually JW told him that no matter how long he stares at it, it won’t become a motorcycle. Then DB said that his read wasn’t the best and he didn’t feel great about it at first but eventually he got it around to a place where he could end and feel good about it and then he kinda knew he got the part (And CC was like “oh you knew too!”)

also someone in the audience asked if a hotdog is a sandwich and all of the cast said no and then DB started talking about how the best hotdogs he ever had were grilled and from Boston or somewhere and then went on a huge rant about Chicago food and how it’s frowned upon to put ketchup on your hotdog (I’ve never really experienced that tbh and I’m originally from the area XD) and how Chicago pizza is like soup and it was so funny because he was just so adamant and just really funny

And CC was like “you triggered him!” and playfully trying to like almost talk him down

at the end of his rant DB just goes something like “the hotdogs set me off!”

Someone else asked about CC and JM working on supernatural together and if they knew they’d be working together before hand and JM said he did and that when he was told he’d be working with CC he was like “oh no” because he genuinely thought she was mean because of how good of an actress she is and then partway through filming he was like “oh I am SO sorry, I am an idiot” and CC was like “and I was like ‘oh so that’s why we never interacted on set’”. Also JM kept complimenting CC on her acting and said he was really happy to have done that episode because it allowed him to make a new friend and CC said she was really happy for that time because she got to really know James and because it was fun to try and not butcher Romanian together

they were asked about their favorite episodes and James said “The Body” because of the tonal shift and how they could do something so powerful they didn’t even need vampires or music. Marc said “Hush” and that when filming, he was newer to the industry but was so impressed by how much was able to be conveyed without dialogue and it was a moment he was like “oh they this creator [JW] has power”. DB talked about what he remembered from Becoming Part 2 with being stabbed in the gut and a mouth opening up and being sucked away and going “buffy!” and Marc jumps in and goes “are you sure you weren’t saying ‘Riley!’” and DB then goes “Riley! you’re next! you’re the next boyfriend!”

CC’s answer was when she got to finally stake a vampire in Graduation Day Part 2 and how she really felt like Cordy would know how to kill a demon at this point and then got to

The moderator did this like buffy themed personality quiz with the cast while people were lining up for questions and they were asked what outfit they’d wear if they got turned into a vampire and out of the options given (tracksuit, 19th century corset and dress, long leather trench coat) MB chose tracksuit, DB said “all of them” and also that he didn’t really care ahkdks, CC said the dress but she’d also be down for leather and heels because she likes to kick butt, and JM ofc said the coat

Also CC said she’d love to be a vampire and JM said she’d also make a great slayer and then asked the audience “wouldn’t Cordelia be a great slayer?” and everyone cheered

someone asked about how DB felt when he read that Angelus was gonna kill Jenny and if he was worried that his character wouldn’t be able to come back from that and DB was like “I was just happy I was getting paid” but then he talked about how you just go with it and let the script lead you and just go fully into it acting wise. And then he told a story about how when they were filming the scene where Angelus snaps Jenny’s neck, he remembers specifically where they were standing and when he did the crack he put a little flourish to it and afterwards people were like “dude are you okay???”

And then James talked about how the best character arcs are like a rollercoaster, you have moments of going up and being like “weeee” and moments of going down and screaming and you don’t want a flat rollercoaster

CC also started to go off of what they said but I honestly don’t remember what she said because she mentioned “salty goodness” and DB immediately perked up and got all smirky and faux flirty and put his arm around CC and she leaned into him and goes “helloooo salty goodness” and it was the highlight of the whole panel

someone asked what monsters they would’ve liked to either battle or be turned into in the show and ~ DB - Bigfoot, MB - Yeti, JM - Baba Yaga, CC - Medusa

CC’s Medusa answer was because in sixth grade she used to use curlers in her hair and it’d puff out and kids would make fun of her for that and she thinks having Medusa would maybe help her sixth grade self reclaim that. And then she goes “maybe this is something I should bring up in therapy”

MB talked about his sex scenes with SMG and how she’s little and he would have to be on top and he’d be like “you’re gonna kill this girl!”

Marc: “Looking down the line I realize we’ve all kissed Sarah” CC raises her hand really high: “I haven’t!”

DB joked about how the sex scenes with SMG were tame but on Angel he got to really let loose and he and Julie Benz got to go wild and CC goes “excuse me” and he kinda stops and playfully nudges her and says something that implies that hers were better or their scenes were good too (I don’t super remember because I think the moderator started talking over them)

also in the earlier discussion about all of them being Buffy’s boyfriends, DB got all goofy excited about going over to his own show and having CC on it and was like “see ya Buffy, I’ve got my own thing now” and sort of nudged CC

for some reason the QnA got cut short? it was super weird the moderator got a little card that I’m assuming had a note on it and said they needed to end the QnA and then James looked at the paper and the moderator said they had a raffle and everyone was bummed so CC was like “would you like a raffle or more questions?” and James handed her the paper and she immediately put her mic down

And the raffle was super strange because it was just trying to get people to guess how much Spike’s coat cost and people were guessing and she was like “higher” and then this woman was $400 dollars off and she was just like “oh I’ll give it to you” but then didn’t have a prize on hand and was just like “you’ll get one later” with no other info??? it was so strange

but we still had like 21 more minutes of panel left so the moderator just asked more questions which I probably have already talked about but I honestly can’t remember what order things were asked in

it was a really good and fun panel though, the cast were so great and they all talked about how much the fans mean to them and everything, they were very sweet and they also talked about how CC and JM were really championing the con scene from almost the very beginning and it was so super sweet and they’re all such a great cast

Thinking about Leave the Light on but it’s Two Bit. How every single night, he comes home exhausted from his job. It’s late and he just wants to sleep and ignore the world. But he can’t. So he makes himself a small dinner and glances around his house. It isn’t much, it’s small, but it was what Marcia always talked about. Marcia. God, everything came back to her didn’t it? He leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes, and let his mind wander back to her. He thought back to their long talks in the middle of the night. How he’d pull her close, take her cool hand in his and they’d just enjoy each other’s company like they had forever to do it.

Sometimes he lets himself hope that she’s just outside. She’s right around the corner and not twenty hours away, moving on and forgetting about him. He lets himself long for her in the late nights in his kitchen. He wonders too. About what their life could’ve been. If she’d stayed, would they have settled down? Would they have gotten married? Had kids? Would he be cooking up food for a whole family while listening to her laugh drift in from outside? Would they sit down for dinner and just talk about anything and everything?

But then reality comes crashing down as the kettle starts to whistle. She left. Marcia is gone and she isn’t coming back. And honestly, it’s good that she isn’t. Two Bit knows that. He knows that she deserves more than Tulsa and he can ever offer her. But damn it, if some part of him doesn’t wish she’d come back. She’d come back and knock on his door and tell him that she missed him. He knows it’s stupid, but god does he wish it would happen. But there was a reason he only allowed himself to wish late at night. Because late at night, no one was going to come by and see him. No one would notice if his eyes were raw and there were tears slipping down his cheeks.

It’s ok. That’s what he told himself. As long as she’s happy, it’s ok. So he’d sighed, straightened up in his chair, and poured water from the kettle. He lifted up his hand to rub his temples and try to fight away the growing headache he felt. It was late, he should sleep. But just as he went to turn off the light, someone knocked on his door. And when he opened it, there she was. Standing there, stance uncertain, hair longer, and face slightly changed, but there was no mistaking it. She was here. She was back. She was real.

BOY DO I okay strap in party people it’s time for anarcia headcanons part deux :)

Anetra has always been kind of insecure about the scar on her eye, and tries to cover it with makeup a lot but because of the spot it’s in and how big it is it’s hard to fully conceal. Marcia on the other hand thinks it’s part of what makes Anetra Anetra and also wants her girlfriend to fully love everything about herself, so she’s the one who suggested that she start painting the scar beautiful colors when she does her makeup and making it a beautiful highlight instead of something she feels like she should hide. Her personal favorite is when she does glitter. Anetra wasn’t sold at first but when she saw how happy it made Marcia she started to do it more and more and it honestly did help her confidence a lot and she loves the colorful accent now too!

Marcia can dance like nobody’s business, but she’s also clumsy as hell, which Anetra always teases her for but is also there to catch her and give her kisses to distract her (though Anetra loves to wear super high heels so half the time if Marcia goes tumbling and Anetra tries to catch her, they’re both going down)

You know those videos on TikTok and YouTube of people sewing like gorgeous princess ball gowns? Yeah, Anetra makes those for Marcia because she knows Marcia loves to feel like a real life Disney princess, and also she just thinks her girlfriend looks gorgeous in them. Marcia, in turn, helps Anetra make her dance costumes and cute club wear cause she knows that’s what Anetra feels the most beautiful and confident in. Every once in a while she’ll make her a gorgeous elegant gown though and they’ll go out for a fancy dinner date in their extravagant handmade dresses, looking 1000x hotter than any other couple in the place.

This one is courtesy of my friend! Marcia loves to play little jokes on their friends due to Anetras RBF. She’ll tell people that Anetras upset about something, or doesn’t like something and they always believe her cause Anetra absolutely looks like she is in a shit mood if she doesn’t actively think about her face, and then when people bring it up to Anetra she’s always very confused where people are getting that idea from. Clearly Marcia likes to be a brat sometime am I right ladies ;)

I personally believe that, like me, Anetra is a big fucking baby when she’s sick, and Marcia is low key a hypochondriac but only about Anetra cause she gets so worried seeing someone she loves so much not feel good, but she takes such good care of her and goes absolute mother mode. But it took Anetra a long time into their relationship to accept the help cause she isn’t used to being taken care of like that and she is more used to just curling up under the covers and whining about how bad she feels until it passes on it’s own. Marcia simply won’t let that stand and goes the whole 9 yards: soup, meds, cold compresses, shoulder rubs, even helping her shower (albeit they shower together most of the time anyways so this isn’t particularly novel)

As with before, my head is teeming with so many thoughts about this duo, especially after rabidly consuming any content I can find where they interact (they looked at each other once in a clip at the reunion and my friend immediately went omg Rachel look! Inspiration for your fanfic! So shoutouts to her tbh), and I love sharing my silly little headcanons that I hope you all love too 🥺 feel free to message me or reply with any thoughts on these ideas or any headcanons of your own!!!

and the third unit to permanently bite the dust in my RD playthrough is Marcia, because by fucking god, I was not going to reset on Geoffrey's Charge. that map is a slog

shoutout to geoffrey for dodging two hits that would have absolutely killed him, killing the boss on enemy phase, and securing me a first try victory. the title was right. that geoffrey can charge.

go to the sides and take out the archers and catapults? no. send geoffrey and kiran straight through to clobber the boss with a brave lance and hope they survive. fuckin hell man
