Thanks for the tag, @roseofcards90!
Last song listened to:
youtube
Currently watching:
Move to Heaven (kdrama) - this probably isn't my usual fare, but I think I'm liking it so far? (Finished the first two eps) It's basically about telling the stories of the dead and making sure they get the respect they may not have received in life. One of the main MCs is autistic (as in, literally diagnosed) and the writing/acting seems to have a good balance so far with not babying him by showing he is competent but just has different rules and different people "get" him to varying levels? (There are definitely some little bits like the implication that his dad learnt sign language for him that feels warm rather than some writer just googling "common autistic traits") Will see how it goes anyway. It seems like the story of the day is episodic but the character stuff is building in the background.
Link Click (donghua) - Started watching this when s1 was airing but it was airing in the same period as Oddtaxi so the mystery parts of my brain were focused more on that at the time. To simplify it, it's a time travel donghua where the MC has to go back in time in order to retrieve info without altering the timeline. Season two is airing now and whilst I prefer s1 still overall s2 is still pretty interesting? Season one is more episodic/structured into arcs with a character focus, whilst season two is more full pelt mystery (so it's a bit surprising I prefer s1 tbh).
Jujutsu Kaisen (anime) - I'm an anime-only with this and am probably going to remain that way (especially from what I've gleaned about the manga - I might just watch to end of season two then leave it be?). Season two so far has captured me more than season one, though I've not seen the latest episode yet so will see if that holds when we return to the main cast. Either way, the openings and endings are genuinely so well-made. Even if the series goes entirely in a direction I hate I know I'll always have them.
Again My Life (kdrama) - Lawyer guy gets into trouble trying to take down a powerful guy. Gets killed (shocker). Gets sent back to his younger self to do it right this time. Not a super original plot admittedly, but it's a chill story so far and the relationships between the main cast in it (pretty much all platonic at least at this stage) are all really sweet. It's also doing surprisingly well in giving the female characters interesting conflicts
Adventure Time (US cartoon) - Not watching the whole thing and I have seen a number of random episodes out of order before, but am trying to crash course my way through enough to watch Fiona and Cake. Just finished the episode about Finn's ocean phobia and um, bit more yikes than I was expecting at this stage, but okay. Also, unfortunately, I can entirely see what people mean about Bubblegum&Finn being inspiration for Makima&Denji
Currently reading:
Klara and the Sun - first arc complete, extremely worried about some flags I'm picking up, rip. It's from the POV of a robot (AI kinda deal) and narration-wise, it really shows. Klara's pretty naiive in some ways, but the world-building and clues still make their way through the narration filter
House of Leaves - okay, ngl, I'm not far into this at all, but I've been confused about references to it for years and it seems meta so I'm going to get through it
Will bundle manga in together for ones I'm properly keeping up with rather than checking in every few months to catch up so: Skip and Loafer (monthly release), Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun (monthly), Spy x Family (fortnightly). Webtoons: Rebirth (weekly), unOrdinary (weekly).
Current obsession:
idek what I'd count because I'm into a few things rn and none of them to the extent I've done the whole deep dive? I'm being relatively chill, for me, I'd say. I'll say Link Click, Good Omens, Spy x Family are the things I'm most into nowadays? Good Omens is definitely what I have the most reblogs queued up relating to by far. There's just so much art and meta and I'm not used to being into a fandom here that just has so much. It's a bit overwhelming, honestly
Not sure who to tag but anyone who sees this and wants to have a go feel free (and feel free to ping me in it, I'm nosy) ^^

Billboard USA Exclusion Zone Episode 9 (04/22/2023)
Tumblr media
Hello there and welcome to my weekly show where I look at the new debuts from the Billboard Global Excluding US chart. Yes I didn't do this last week. Part of it because I had final thesis to revise. But also I didn't feel it with most of the debuts and the less I said about Melanie Martinez...the better.
Anyways this week is definitely more interesting than last week because we have three j-pop songs and one of them came from the most hyped anime this season Oshi no Ko. We also have some k-pop too and even some surprises. Let's do this.
-----------------------------------------------------
16. "People Pt. 2" by Agust D ft. IU
Another day, another new solo song from a BTS member. Now we get Agust D who usually do the rap portion of a lot of BTS songs with this being another rap song. This reminded me of early 2010's rap song where you have a singer doing the hook and it just reminded me that Airplanes is now could be considered as retro...next.
23. "Search & Rescue" by Drake
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (this is shit)
30. "I AM" by IVE
I love a lot of IVE songs and I will say that After Like has the best obvious sampling last year. Which is why it's kinda disappointing that this didn't clicked with me as much as it did. The production is tiring and it's basically "I'm back bitch" singles.
80. "Un Finde Crossover #2" by Ke personajes X Big One X FMK
I was vibing to this...then the farty synth and the laser beam sound appeared.
83. "Baby Don't Hurt Me" by David Guetta, Anne-Marie & Coi Leray
This is just sad now. Like I think this song that made me realized that maybe AI music isn't so bad after all when anything David Guetta made in 2022-23 sounds like AI generated mush.
102. "Mera Na" by Sidhu Moose Wala, Burna Boy & Steel Banglez
First and foremose Rest In Peace Sidhu Moose Wala. Secondly this song is just a well produced Punjabi rap and the addition of Burna Boy here is needed.
135. "Idol" by Yoasobi
And here it is. The song that might be the center piece of Oshi no Ko. Anime series based on critically acclaimed manga made by the same guy that did Kaguya-sama. Now even though I haven't watched the anime, I have been spoiled by the manga and well the reason why I swelled up while listening to the song while reading the lyrics...yeah this song is something special.
141. "Kizuna no Kiseki" by MAN WITH A MISSION x milet
Oh hi it's another Demon Slayer song but tbh might be the worst one imo. Yeah this song is great but it's typical for shounen anime to have banger OP at this point and nothing could beat Gurenge.
146. "Never Felt So Alone" by Labrinth (uncredited: Billie Eilish)
One of my favorite content creators Spectrum Pulse coined a term "Riverdale-core" to describe songs with bombast but no substance tackling social issues but with the gaudiness of a vaudville villain. Well for this song I wanna coined a term "Euphoria-core" which is lowkey mostly RnB song with strings and mechanical production.
154. "Zero" by NewJeans
Now I am interested what NewJeans will follow up after the big success of Ditto and OMG. And seems like they are making...a drum and bass song about Coke Zero....okay then.
162. "Chanel" by Becky G & Peso Pluma
Now we will see more impact next week, but what a year it is for Mexican music. Seems like the sound of the trumpet plus that bassline is caught on (tbh idk what to say at this point like after listening to Idol with subs on I'm a jsdhjkdsh)
178. "LADY" by Kenshi Yonezu
WHY IS THERE TWO COKE COMMERCIAL SONGS???
I highly recommend everyone to listen to these songs.

♡ FILMS FOR FAUNLET FASHION INSPO ♡
~~Got bored so compiled this (pretty extensive) list of film references for faunlet style and aesthetics, might be helpful for anyone looking to delve into and develop their style. Don't take this as some kind of gospel, it's just a bunch of movies and shows that I think can be useful reference points. My personal style and taste for example is a huge mix and amalgalm of stuff I see, from movie characters to paintings, books, comics, cartoons, music videos, haute couture collections, K- and J-idols, BJD dolls, even elements and staples from female fashion that I kind of genderflip or just outright mix into and merge with my own "masculine"/boyish/whatever faunlet fits. I think the secret to finding your style is to never limit yourself & always be creative (& clever ofc)! ♡
Feel free to suggest and tell me some of your personal films/shows that inspire you the most. I'm sure I forgot some stuff >.> Hope this helps somewhat lolol
WARNING: A LOT OF THESE HAVE MATURE THEMES AND +18 STUFF, SO DO RESEARCH BEFORE WATCHING AND PROCEED AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION, CAUTION & RESPONSIBILITY!

Teorema by PP Pasolini (also Saló tbh bt I feel kinda weird recommending that lmfao even though it's a pretty well-established masterpiece & one of my favs)
Total Eclipse by Agnieszka Holland (teenage Arthur Rimbaud is a core faunler reference tbh, strange that I don't see him brought up more, though he's been a queer/twink culture icon for ages so yeah)
Les roseaux sauvages by André Téchiné
Call Me by Your Name by Luca Guadagnino
Deep Red by Dario Argento (only for the flashback Xmas scenes with the creepy little boy in knee-highs and Mary Janes tbh lol)

L'enfance nue by Maurice Pialat
A Single Man by Tom Ford
Looking for Langston by Isaac Julien
Sacré College, Garçons d'Etage, Scouts and Gamins de Paris by JD Cadinot (WARNING: Cadinot's films are basically erotica/arthouse vintage gay p*rn so obviously 18+!!!!!)

The Lost Boys by Joel Schumacher
Y Tu Mamá Tambièn by Alfonso Cuarón
Summer 85 by François Ozon
Les Chansons d'Amour + La Belle Personne by Christophe Honoré

summer 2019 anime sum-up
lmao i realized i never did this and posted the fall season b4 this.... oops
kimetsu no yaiba: tbh started out kinda meh. and now it’s turned into one of the new big shounens. i was not expecting that. nearing the end got rly good and i was rly looking forward to more episodes! tanjiro gets cooler and cooler! animation is rly nice (thanks ufotable) and the way tanjiro’s water is animated. like. aesthetic asf. it’s so good. i love black-haired emo dude and zenitsu (my spirit animal) and ofc nezuko she is adorable im c r y. side note: the hashira? i think they’re called? some of the ugliest fkn characters i’ve seen in ages like flame boy? stone boy? i HATE them. and the gem dude too like man get a new tattoo artist on god.... he needs it.,,,,,,and inosuke is so pretty it’s unfair
dr stone: ok man dr stone rly went off. tbh. i’ve always been a whore for chemistry since reading the flavia de luce series (btw, i want more books of) and watching this just tickles my noodle brain in a good way... who needs prozac when i get a shitton of serotonin from watching senku dick around....  (btw what is going on with what’s his face and the girl. yuzuriha????? i can’t remember. i love senku don’t get me wrong but i need their perspective too... bc i hate lion dude... so much.... dick....) again i will repeat that i am a whore for chemistry so i get oFF on this. backgrounds are amazing/ animation so nice n clean (most o the time lmao). i thought i would hate the black n white haired trickster boi and ms yellow ponytail and suika but no! dr stone is such a good show that they are now great, loveable characters. also i am senku and chrome’s whore so jfc. man, i love the explanations of all the chemistry shabang, but some things i think would be better if explained! like senku doing physical labour at the beginning- ex. making all those pots and building that shit by hisself. i know he weak af. yes he smart but like. construction? difficult. pottery? even for me the artist . difficult. and that shed of his was filled to the brim. HOW. anyways, i love this so much i am crying constantly
just realized i didnt need to write about dr stone. oh well.
danmachi 2: wtf yo. haruhime is so pretty but not a fan of her personality! bell still cute af and still don’t rly like aiz! animation good as always, and my god i shit myself whenever the argonaut theme starts up bc that is ? one of the best pieces of non-sawano hiroyuki pieces i’ve ever heard? addicted to it. and the opening! love the dynamics, the brief ‘rain’ scenes like when mikoto slashes the raindrops and just her motion basically? as an animator that is what i aspire to accomplish because i just love that. tiny little scene.
arifureta: this would have been so much better had they dragged out mc’s op-ifying process! made him suffer more! i explained this briefly in my ‘first thoughts’ post for this season, but story-wise and pacing-wise his power-up could have been so much more deserved and gratifying. think shield hero- loser suffers, gets angry, slowly builds up power in an epic payoff! would have been so epic too. and also if they’d made his gained powers less.... crazy nerfed. again: HE SHOULD HAVE SUFFERED MORE AND THIS WOULD HAVE MADE A BETTER SHOW. harem thoughts: yue- meh. sucky char honestly. shea- my fav girl, she is a great character don’t judge- sexy and love her personality and love her character design and love how much fanservice she gets lol. panty flash ftw. dragon girl- discount darkness honestly , tho nice design. and mermaid girl- yuck, annoying,  DO NOT like the ‘papa’ trope! (ahem sao.) it’s gross. also just fuck mc’s classmates honestly- paladin dude sucks ass, healer girl OOF that last episode ruined her, samurai girl is ok i guess. hate ai-sensei too like shut UPP annoying ass HOEEEEE (postscript: opening=very epic too)
kanata no astra: plot twist? check. trillion well-done plot twists? check. this was done very well. i am so happy. all those plot twists and turns would usually suck in any regular anime- but this was written with GODLIKE ability. thank you, lerche. legit, this was such an enjoyable ride, i eagerly awaited each new ep! typically i hate space-related stuff but like! survival stuff gets my goat.... like this was good- (tho maybe more technical-stuff in the survival theme would make it so cooler) what shocked me the most: (spoilers alert) didn’t end up hating quitterie or funi. (tho the puppet made me want to strangle smth) luca’s gender had rly confused me but i’d decided on him being a boy- so basically that reveal left me like WHOA. i died. did luca rly have to show emo boy their tity tho... kanata losing his arm gave me the yeeeks, charce being the traitor was made sO WELL into a surprise even tho i’d kinda already suspected him<- like that was just fucking amazing writing there. gj. and ares the princess! ok man! shocked! AND also the whole clone thing, just fucked me right up. up the ass. like there are probably more plot twist layers in this than a fkn ogre has.... anyway shrek aside, yun?’s character arc was very pleasing, i think that was done very well! and the ending made me UwU like BRO? goals tbh. yeah this is a hidden gem and is just so good, so well-written overall.
cop craft: didn’t have high expectations. i am now,,, quite,,, shocked &,,, blown away. sweetheart this is a good fucking show. so why @ livechart.me DOES IT HAVE 7.40 STARS WHEN FKN ARIFURETA HAS 7.72. can someone explain this to me? i’m outraged. LIVID.  matoba and tilarna were amazing characters btw! loved their dynamic! briefly i thought it might get romantic! nope, it didn’t, so it’s all good. actions scenes were epic, tilarna’s design and outfits were so much nicer than i thought they’d be like. she is so cute. and the op- man, if that is not such a bopper vibe then idk what is. i could watch it forever. it deserves so much more than what it’s got rn.
naka no hito genome: (serious question: is this considered some sort of isekai?) genome gave me btooom vibes honestly but like- this is SO much better than btooom and most game/trap/ kinda shows. fkn BOP of an op, especially the sequence at the end with short clips of each character in action (nutt). paka-san was a good boy and he deserves irl merch. i fell in LOve with all the characters (bubble boy= hot, akatsuki= ok meh actually kinda boring, karin= hot and i want her to punch me, ruromori= beautiful 12/10 would let her stalk me, sleepy eyes boy= baby + dazai vibes and hot af, twin boy= also hot, onigasaki= hot and love him so much, and loli girl= her light grenades got annoying but nice char design) anyways yeah more of this would be epic. i wanna see sakura and her twin reunite, and how they get out basically! also animation quality was very good which is surprising considering it’s a silver link anime.
kono yo no hate de koi wo utau shoujo yu-no: i include the whole title bc this is a good anime. (also livechart.me why 7.27 stars i will fuck you up) only meh part of this is the return to earth from dela granto bc that was like a culture shock and honestly at that point i’d forgotten a lot about what had happened on earth and didn’t care as much. btw, f ayumi and f the other brown-haired oneesan. mio and kanna ftw. obvs i didn’t understand the sayless x takuya thing like dumbass horny teenager . why u gotta creampie the worst girl. u have mio. bruh. (tho mio x ‘oyabi!’ boy is a great ship) also, takuya’s mom? keiko-san? idk if you’ve noticed but that’s literally my name so yeah just glad to finally have some keiko representation. altogether goodass anime. the time travel/ rezero esque reset thing almost got me but this was done well. so no problems. both ops very good. first song was bae, second also bae (just realized it’s by konomi suzuki, one of my waifu idols, so yea nice) and ed2 also so pretty! also yu-no’s design was rly pretty, the outfit colours, and her pigtails rly suited her :)
granbelm: sorry this is the last one lol this was a long ass post! other than the fact i dont rly like mecha this was good.... action, CHARACTER designs aesthetic asf, honestly rly pretty ok. i liked the cast, very diverse and more depth than most shows of this ilk. op was nicely choreographed- especially the part where the girls’ faces are contorted by their gems, showing their magical girl side. nicely done. mangetsu didn’t end up being that bad a char, and honestly? suigetsu is best girl and deserved better. and the ending too- like, bro, that made me kinda sad. some off points: anna’s mom was a little unrealistic as a mom like woman- please learn to control your child, and, white-haired girl’s sister should have played a bigger part, based on how her parts in the opening were emphasized! (quick note- blue girl, love her, great bad guy, when she dumped anna made me so happy honestly, she is beautiful, and i couldn’t actually decide who i wanted to win between her and suigetsu....)
hope u enjoyed this bad review. pls share ur opinions w/ me on some of of these more controversial shows. thank.

asks!
Tumblr media
yeah, xiyi's road to mutual understanding, though rocky on occasion, still was always paved with love, care and most meaningful friendship.
in case of tianshan, they both can be assholes, especially he tian who shows awful entitlement at times. but they're getting there.. what i really love about their relationship and the way it started is the fact that he tian was the first one around to genuinely see in momo something greater than he lets on, his potential~ to be "an outstanding person".
mo was treated unfairly since childhood, i imagine it did hurt tremendously to not only be ostracized but also to love and look up to his father while everyone considered him a vile criminal. even his friends let those occasional "don't end up like your old man" phrases slip.. and he tian appears out of nowhere and acts (rightfully so) as if mo's past does not define him at all. and says that what really matters is who he is and what he does. and sees him and his true strength, pride and spirit behind all the attitude, hostility & bad temper.
which leads me to the last part of your ask. he tian doesn't need a reason to help mo, money isn't hard for him and he could make it rain on mo anytime, however he knows damn well that mo needs this reason, otherwise it would be "charity", and mo is too proud to accept that. that's why he tian makes him work for it, so that mo can justify it to himself. and i feel like things like 10K for a kiss~ are just little loopholes for he tian to help the person he cares about without making him feel inferior (while also getting something in return, let's be fair lol).
oof that's a long one sorry.. everyone go read the update!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm so sorry i’m replying only now! thank you so much for such kind words! it would be really interesting, i haven't really tried any of those characters, even though i love their design.. i hope i have some time soon. thank you!!
Tumblr media
ehh not really. tsurumi is my favorite character and koito is a precious and lovable dumb bitch, and i may draw them in a suggestive manner lol but i wouldn't want to see them ~~together~~ since their power dynamic is huuugely imbalanced. and again, koito is a dumb bitch
Tumblr media
well, he is a piece of shit in general tbh
Tumblr media
oh dear. my ship has sunk ever since i saw the raws. i just hope haru aka best boy eventually finds happiness, and aki can go die in a ditch for all i care
Tumblr media
hey! im almost a decade late but i started yowapeda recently lol as for this season there's not so much i watch
banana fish (has me fucked up every week smh) vento aureo (!) golden kamuy 2 kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteiru
manga: golden kamuy hxh gokushufudou dead dead demon's dedede~ uramichi oniisan innocent rouge blanc (asumiko nakamura) given kuroshitsuji
manhua, manhwa: 19 days & sq someone else's bl manhwa (really good shounen ai) here u are wolf in the house (!)
Tumblr media
hey, not at the moment but *hopefully* soon. thank you so much!!

((ABSOLUTELY unreleated to Naruto)) What do you think of Yuri/Shoujo Ai? Do you like it?
Tumblr media
I don’t know much about it tbh. I sure like it as a concept (girls’ love), but every time I stumbled on it, it was either slice of life or horror with gore and yandere witches and both are kinda boring to me. I like angst and certain themes, so if a manga has them to me it’s ok if it’s yuri, yaoi, het, or nothing at all, and if the characters and their dynamics are interesting to me, I’m in. So far I’ve found the most interesting ones (and the most fitting for my taste) in mlm/yaoi/shounen ai. Also, I don’t like shrill voices, and the 90% of female anime characters have a shrill bubbly voice, not even considering their characterization that in a girls’ love story should be much more accurate than a shounen. I know the stereotypical yuri couple has a decent voice for the ‘top’ girl and the everpresent shrieky girl as her partner, so I never felt like deepening my poor knowledge of yuri. Do you recommend something I might like? Knowing my (picky) taste and all? :)

T: Fandom tropes you cant stand? Any NOTPs? C: Any character you identify with? owo
T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?
Basically any tropes that come from yaoi/shounen-ai, like the seme/uke thing, it just… ugh. I especially dislike the ‘super seme Alexander/weak uke Daniel’ trope that went around too much in the days of yore where people acted like Alexander was some creepy rapist and Daniel some defenseless little baby. I know I sadly contributed a bit to it myself back then but it just… always made me uncomfortable. I can’t see them that way at all, it just feels wrong.
As for NOTPs, I don’t think I have any? I probably used to have some but I’m generally bad at paying attention to things I don’t like and if something doesn’t tickle my fancy I just… forget about it lmao. But I think that’s a healthy approach tbh, you shouldn’t invest time and emotion on things you don’t like.
C: What character do you identify with most?
I mean, if it isn’t immediately obvious from my writing almost exclusively from his POV… Daniel, of course. :P I don’t know why exactly, I just felt this connection as soon as I played the game and it has stayed the same ever since. Daniel speaks to the side of me that has a lot of repressed anger and other negative emotions; the side that we cannot due to cultural reasons and ‘proper’ upbringing express, so we just ignore it and let it eat us alive, until it comes out in stressful situations. And don’t let me get started on the bullying, good lord. I did a Daniel as a kid and pushed one of my bullies down two flights of stairs when I finally snapped (he deserved it, zero regret). That thing about Henry was an immediate ‘oh god hashtag same’ moment.
And, this sounds horrible, but I like that his survival instinct was portrayed in such a realistic way. That he’s not some selfless little hero, just ready to die. In his shoes I’d probably do the same and save my own skin. Maybe that’s why his story really spoke to me and got underneath my skin.
I don’t know, I feel like my life had been missing a character like him who represented the worse sides of humanity; the ugly, selfish, twisted sides. It’s very therapeutic to write him. Don’t get me wrong, I do think Daniel has his good sides too and I find him very likable, but he’s not what I’d call a good person (but I don’t see him as evil, either - being evil and being a bad person are not 100% the same thing in my opinion, but that’s a discussion for another time).
Ooookay I’m getting sidetracked, let’s wrap this up :’D Never get me started on Daniel or I won’t shut up.
TLDR: it’s Daniel all the way, baby. Also did I mention that delicious English accent? Not to be that person, but GOD. Talk to me all night, man, I’m buying you a drink.

Hey guys, we’re back with our Top 10 Anime of Summer 2019 – Week 3.
1. Given – continues to give us music, drama, comedy altogether in this amazing shounen-ai story.
2. Vinland Saga – glory for the strong, death for the weak. This anime is simply on killing spree and it shows no sign of stopping from bringing amazing fight scenes and interesting story for all of us.
3. Astra: Lost in Space – we are now entering a little bit deeper to a bigger conspiracy.
4. Fire Force – the quality of animation is definitely a top-notch this season and the story is getting interesting too.
5. O Maidens in your Savage Season – I just love how Mari Okada could always deliver a good writing despite of how obscene the topic could be and this anime is a perfect example how a good written story could make a common plot interesting.
6. DanMachi Season 2- Finally, we are getting some huge improvement in the story and it’s lit than ever.
7. Dr. Stone – a little bit of slow down here from our favourite scientist. However, the quality is always there, I just though the story is on the mode of “the calm before the storm” for a great build up.
8. Gorgeous Butterfly: Young Nobunaga – this anime is really pretty and if you think that it’s your typical bishounen series? Just wait! J
9. To The Abandoned Sacred Beasts – the drama is quite heavy to carry in this anime and I really enjoyed every ounce of it here.
10. How Heaver Are the Dumbbell You Life? – Definitely a fun show you won’t expect based on its title. It’s truly funny and fun to watch especially the educational info they embedded on its story. Now, this is motivating me to work out somehow I think.
In our honourable mention list, we have the following:
11. BEM – I seriously love the graphics and animation here though it’s quite mediocre in eyes of other people. I also enjoyed how it could easily change the mood from light to dark, and vice versa.
12. The Ones Within (GENOME) – could be this season’s best suspense-thriller anime. The combination of comedy, drama, and a little bit of madness is really perfectly mixed here.
13. Skilled Teaser Takagi-san – I just love how the innocence keep us all interested in it and every second is never wasted as it always made us smile to its cute story.
14. If it’s for my Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord – Personally, Latina is really making the show amazing and I wish the rest could catch up to her. Nonetheless, this is a very relaxing and fun anime to watch if you want to unwind.
15. Cop Craft – and here we have one of my personal favourite. This really reminds me of Garo: Vanishing Line and I’d been quite the sucker type when it comes to Urban Fantasy so I am really having high expectation for this. As of now, it’s quite average but the promise is definitely still there.
For the leftover anime, we have the following:
1. Black Clover – After the epic fight between the Wizard King and Leader of the Midnight Sun, who would ever contest with it getting the first spot? I could that this is by far one of the best episodes from the anime series.
2. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – the feels is here again and the anime is doing what it has always been good and that it is to let us get to know that even demons have some kind of emotions in them.
3. Fruits Basket (2019) – Damn, the feels and nostalgia is just too much to handle. It feels great to get a glimpse at the backstory of Tohru’s friends as well as her mother tbh.
So, which shows this week did you enjoy the most guys? Please let us know by leaving your comment below.

aa So I just woke up to this?
Tumblr media
I’m just.. speechless? I can’t believe this actually happened, so thank you all for the last few months, for every like, reblog and comment. It’s been such a pleasure to interact with you and scream about Mirio and The Big Three<3 I hope 2019 won’t bring us too many tears (spoiler: it will.) and we can all laugh about their shenanigans again (spoiler: we won’t.). This blog came alive with crazy good fanart, hilarious memes and sweet headcanons, sprinkled with my neverending affection towards Mirio, so kudos go out to the amazing artists and writers that create the content we love<3 Thank you for over 1k followers and I hope to see the family of mirihoes grow in the progressing year! I’ve received a lot of questions for my milestone special and I only picked out a few, but if you want more of these, let me know! Now let’s dive right into the Q&A!
Heey~ I’m a huge Bnha fan and I love this blog, keep up the great work!! \(^-^)/ I’d love to know how old you are, if that’s not too personal of a question?
Not at all! I’m actually 20 y/o and my Birthday is in June, also my zodiac is Gemini👭
What do you do for a living?
I’m a university student in my second year! I’m majoring in Linguistics and my minor is English Literature and Culture. Though before, I did a year of Environmental Sciences, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea so I quit🤷‍♀️ I’m also part timing at a boutique.
Hello! I check your blog everyday and I can’t with all your reactions, they’re almost always the same as mine:D Which state (USA) are you from and what languages do you speak?
Lol, do I really sound American?:D I’m actually from Germany, so German is my mother tongue! Other than that, I consider myself pretty fluent in English (your assumption of me being a native speaker flatters me so much, you have no idea) and I guess my French is decent. I can order food and ask for directions in Spanish (ayyyy) and studied Hindi for two semesters at Uni. Also I’m currently learning Japanese for my degree in Linguistics.
Do you have a favorite anime show? Other than My hero academia of course!
My all time favorite anime is definitely Arslan Senki! Besides that, I also love Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Assassination Classroom, Durarara, Hunter x Hunter and pretty much every existing sports anime (Haikyuu, Kuroko no Basuke, Daiya no Ace, Free!, Yowapedal, Yuri on Ice, Prince of Tennis,.. although Haikyuu is my favorite) I enjoy most genres as long as the plot and characters appeal to me.
Do you read any manga? (also LOVE YOUR BLOG!!<3)
Yeah! I really love manga and I’ve read tons of shoujo when I was younger (I bingeread every night in middle school tbh) Nowadays though, not so much anymore.. It’s not that I came to hate it, I just don’t have as much time unfortunately-.-’ I do read the new Bnha and Haikyuu chapters on a weekly basis, but I can’t manage more than that. I also read yaoi/shounen-ai manga and doujinshi from time to time, but it’s not as much of an obsession as it was a few years ago. However, I own a couple of manga series (Bnha, Haikyuu, Arslan Senki), which I love to reread in my free time😊
hey, we share a love for mirio, so do you maybe have a few anime recommendations, or any good anime you’re watching now?
uhuhuhu birds of a feather flock together;))) Of course I can dish out some recommendations, but I’ll start with what I’m watching atm. I started rewatching Daiya no Ace not so long ago (due to the announcement of Season 4) so I sometimes watch a few episodes of that when I find the time. Also, and this is a recommendation as well, there’s this new track and field anime called Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru (Run with the Wind) coming out every Friday and it’s hilarious. If you like sports anime, you should definitely give it a go! The last anime I’m rewatching right now is Sukitte Ii na yo (Say I love you), cause I’ve been in a shoujo mood lately and after several years I still can’t deal with the cuteness of this show. Now for recs.. this is hard, since everyone has a different taste in series, but other than the shows I’ve named in the Favorite anime” question, I’d recommend Wotakoi (Wotaku ga Koi no Muzukashii). It’s a very sweet anime about the love stories of otakus, so if you like a good laugh and lots of fluff, this show is for you (11eps). Same goes for Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (12eps + 6 short specials). Shounen-wise I enjoyed for example Noragami, Bleach, Katekyo Hitman Reborn and Magi. Shoujo-wise I can always rewatch Toradora, Kimi ni Todoke and Itazura na Kiss. Sorry for rambling, there are just too many!😅
What pronouns do you use? And what’s you sexual orientation? If the latter question is too personal, just ignore it(/ω\)
No worries! I use she/her pronouns and I’m pan, slightly favoring men. Probably due to the fact that I’ve only had hetero relationships so far. Though, I really don’t care about my partner’s gender🤷‍♀️
hi, i’ve been going through a rough time lately and your reblogs and memes never fail to make my day. how so you stay positive when things are going downhill? (sorry for the weird ask..)
Your question isn’t weird at all! I’m sorry to hear that you don’t feel well lately and I’m glad my posts are able to cheer you up a bit<3 I, for my part, am a very optimistic person and always try to concentrate on the positive things in my life, but I cannot deny that due to my personal problems I’ve spent many nights sleepless as well. Unfortunately, there’s no recipe for happiness, but here are some things you should always keep in mind should you feel down: Don’t surround yourself with toxic people. Don’t let them in your life and if they already are, either ignore them or cut them off. The latter won’t always work, since the world of adulthood is a cruel place, but try to develop a thick skin and don’t let them abuse the power over you that they don’t actually have. Try to talk with people. I can tell from experience that talking about your problems will almost always make you feel better, or at least lighter afterwards. Think positive. There’s never only black and white, so even if everything seems hopeless or bland, you should never cease to search for the good aspects. An example from me: Uni fucks me up real bad atm. I have six exams and one term paper to write this semester and I’m seriously afraid of failing. I’ve always had insane expectations of myself, because when I was a toddler, my parents found out that I was highly talented and that has been a as much of a curse as it is a blessing throughout my entire life. Whenever something gets too much for me and I end up in a slump, I think about how grateful I am to have so many wonderful friends. I think of all the things I plan to do with the money I earn, such as travelling, buying manga, movies, clothes,.. and even if that might not seem like a trivial matter for some people, I think of all the amazing anime coming out this year: Ice Adolescence, One Punch Man Season 2, Attack on Titan Season 3, Fruits Basket remake, Bnha Season 4, Haikyuu Season 4, Daiya no Ace Season 3.. Why am I naming these? Because they keep me going. They give me something to look forward to. They make me realize that I’m extremely grateful to be alive, because I get to experience these works. I get to discuss my favorite shows with people, who share my interests! I get to scream about Mirio’s bara arms with you guys! If that isn’t something to be cheerful about, I don’t know what is<3
And since I don’t want to end this on a solemn note, here’s a personal favorite of mine:
On a scale from 1-10, how much do you love Mirio?^^
1.000.000 (A million, you get it? wink wonk) Thanks for sticking around! Hope this gave you a little insight on who I am and I’d love to spend 2019 with you as well<3

I noticed on your anime list that you’ve completed Yu-gi-oh! Dark Side of Dimensions & the old Sonic the Hedgehog OVA. May I ask for your opinions on these movies? I’d love to hear them!
Ohhhhhhh boy… Heh Heh, alright.
Yu-gi-oh! Dark Side of Dimensions
I love Trading Card games. I used to play YGO and the Pokemon TCG, I regularly play Weiss-Schwarz and WIXOSS and, well, recently I’ve gotten into the Duel Links version of the YGO TCG too. I may not be very good at this sort of games or most games, but I get hooked on them very easily.
So really, as much of a guilty pleasure of mine YuGiOh is, it’s still a *pleasure*, so as soon as I learned (by accident) that the DsoD movie exists, I decided to check it out.
I… honestly got a lot more than I expected, not gonna lie. I was kinda blown away in a good way. Like, it wasn’t a Master Piece, but by the standards of someone who grew up with the 4Kids version of the Anime, it might as well have been.
The movie was written in the Manga continuity by Kazuki Takahashi, and it actually really shows. A lot more effort is paid to highlighting the characters’ humanity and a lot of fluffy and slow character moments, which were almost always cut out of the Anime when the Manga was adapted (yes, even in the Japanese version and season 0; the anime adaptations were both kinda really bad, regardless of language), are fully present here. Like, Joey/Jounouji, Tristan/Honda and Tea/Anzu get to do things other than badly playing card games and being friggin’ cheerleaders. Heck, even poor Human!Ryou gets some actual screentime! It’s kind of impressive. And the way in which the movie elaborates on Sato Kaiba’s unhealthy obsession with Atem to the point he fails to be able to continue his life with the guy gone, while Yugi is able to move on perfectly fine (albeit with some residual grief) is downright scary and haunting. It kinda feels like a dig at the fanbase too, in a way; going all out saying “Look, you guys, the story is over. You can stop reviving the poor guy in your fanfics now. Don’t be a Kaiba.”
The weaknesses of the movie come in in two forms: A) How it deals handles having multiple card battles on-screen over the short time span given to the movie, while still having a proper story and B) Diva Aigami. (I know, those are technically two names, but his disguise is never given a proper first name, so I’ll just use it as one game.)
Okay, so Dimension Summoning. Works on no level, and like, I mean NO level. It claims that the stats of a monster are decided by the willpower of the person summoning it, but thanks to this movie being set after the end of Duel Monsters, everyone’s will-power is already so far off the charts, this detail never even begins to come into play. All the other extra rules are just excuses for bullshit plot twists and to speed up the games. By the end of the movie, the progression of the card games is harder to follow than in the WIXOSS Anime, and I don’t use that insult lightly. I guess that it’s hard to make a less than 2 hours long movie featuring several fully-played card games with a working story, but like. Just don’t. Cut down on the number of card games played, if it really doesn’t work otherwise. I’m sure nobody would have minded that.
Then there’s Diva’s story which is a mess, from beginning to end, tearing gaping plot holes into the established lore of the Manga, mostly by virtue of making Shadi Shin look like a total and utter moron in retrospect (it’s almost like his Abridged Series portrayal is supposed to be canon now.) The concepts introduced with the Plana are cool and could make for a great plot point, but they don’t really fit with the established lore of the Manga’s Universe, coming across as more science-fantasy than the outright fantasy the manga mostly went for, which makes the Plana’s connection to Shadi, one of the most outright “magical” characters in the Manga all the more puzzling. All in all, the Plana feel like something that would fit better in the worlds of YugiOh GX or 5Ds, but not the original Duel Monsters. Makes you wonder if Takahashi’s tastes just changed over the years.
Diva himself is an utter mess too. His whiny-ness and sense of entitlement make Shinji Ikari look like friggin’ Kamina Jiha. He had every chance to take a moment to breath and think about how stupid what he doing is and he just failed and let the Millenium Ring- the very thing he SHOULD have been angry at from the start, rather than Yugi,Ryou&Co - take control of him. In the process, he ruins paradise for his sister and everyone else involved, for no other reason than screwing things up so badly that Atem is *forced* to exercise some divine intervention, lest everyone he knows is to join him in death prematurely. Ultimately, Diva’s entire character boils down to: “Brother, why did you ruin shit for everyone else?” “BECAUSE UWEHHHHH”.
However, all in all, I still really enjoyed the movie a lot for the way it portrayed Yugi&Co. It really did feel like a tearful reunion with old friends and I appreciate that. The Animation was amazing too. If they re-adapted the Manga with this overall style of quality (in characterization of the main characters and in animation), I’m sure it could easily become one of the best merchandise-driven Anime out there. Not that I need that in my life, but it’s a nice thought. It’s definitely a better candidate for re-adaptation than friggin’ Sailor Moon …*COUGH COUGH*
Sonic the Hedgehog OVA
I… don’t have as much to say on this one. It’s a weird, weird take on what, at the time, was a weird, weird game. I get that it was supposed to be the pilot for a Sonic Anime that never ended up being made (which is a good thing, since I’ll take Chris Thorndyke over Princess Catgirl ANY day- YES I SAID IT.) but it does have merit. The characterization of Sonic as a bit more of a morally grey character, rather than a Shounen Hero who’s overly apathetic to anything that moves slower than 180mpH was a nice take on the character, and Tails’ characteristics as the genius gadgeteer were used well. I don’t get what they were going for with Knuckles, tbh, if Sonic Boom didn’t exist I’d say this was the weirdest take on him I’ve ever seen. I think if Sonic Boom Knuckles were to put on the hat of Sonic OVA knuckles, the Master Emerald would implode in shame somewhere out there.
The story is nothing to write home about. It’s kinda cool to have a version of Metal Sonic that ends up redeemed, but that plot point was kinda poorly explained and also sort of horrifying. Like, think about it, if the reason he was redeemed is because his AI is actively an exact copy of Sonic’s Soul, does that mean SONIC DIED IN A FIRE? Just… think about that…
(Some people would love to, I’m sure.)
All in all, it’s yet another strange, strange, animated takes on a series with loads and loads of strange, strange takes on it. One of these days, there needs to be a joking crossover where all the different animated Sonics meet one another. It’d be utter chaos, I’m sure.

[manga review] Men’s Kou
This is just my personal rant. I just finished ‘seems-fine-manga-turns out-a lil-shit-in the end’ kind of manga.
Tumblr media
Men’s Kou (Izumi Kaneyoshi) - baka updates
Description
From Serenus Dreamers:
Five minute walk to the sea. The closest train station takes 50 minutes by car. Famous private dormitory male high school Seihou is located in that super remote place. What will happen at that place where men are crazy for love?!
BEWARE, THIS IS GONNA BE A VERY LONG POST
Good Point
Idk whether The Author intention’s to portrayed such an ambiguous moments.
Educational purposes (life’s experiences)
Our main charas’s designed to have some painful past memories and traits, a death of our loved, unrequited love, unable to express our feelings, introverts, shy, etc. Its a common things and very humane; teenagers/HS students (mostly) have their first adult-to be-experienced in this timeline.
There’s no exact period when and which we could overcome those feelings, maybe a lifetime, maybe 3 mos, maybe years; who knows. It different with each other. But the important things are our willingness to let go the past, learn from our mistakes, and move forward to the future.
Forever but not really forever
Shoujous manga typically selling fluffy dreams, way too fluffy and occasionally way too stupid to read. I have read many shoujous manga that I dont want to read because it way too stupid. In this case, josei or any mature-ish mangas is much better.
Shoujous manga have this kind of philosophy, ‘your first love is gonna be forever and ever’. A simple reality form of classic fairy tale.
I rarely saw a shoujou manga which had a failed first love, overcome it, and obtain a new love. If there’s one, fans sometimes have their majority vote to ship female oc with 1st lead mc. Well, since shoujous type reader range from 13-18 yo, no wonder the stroyline was dreamy like.
It takes a lot of courage for shoujous mangaka to make a new POV for shoujous readers. Otherwise, their new projects unable to sell. In the end of the day, it comes back to money, eh?
* Plot
Plot wise, it’s very good. The plot is straight forward and each characters able to make a significant development. The main setting is about male high school (in deserted dorm) and their love story.
I able to grasp the author’s core in this story:
ability to take a chance
ability to let go and step forward
a strong willful of human being
friendship and loyalty toward it
* Characters
The characters design are great , eventho the style wasnt your typical shoujo style (wide eyes and detailed hairstyle). The style itself is simple but we able to understand the whole story.
The relationship between characters drawn very well. Maybe because the author wrote it in male pov, there’s sometimes a scene/dialogue that shown in male pov. It doesnt feel like shounen-ish manga, but almost like a real life male pov.
Each characters have their personal problems and background, but they manage to live in harmony in dorms and solve their daily problems. Disini juga digambarin kalo misalnya seseorang punya masalah itu, ga ada gunanya kalo disimpen sendiri, with sharing to our friends, we able to take step forward with their support. Still the choice to make still upon themself. What a beautiful of friendship!
imo, this is why i love man friendship rather than female friendship.
* Dialogue
I cant say much about this, since it was not an official translation. But, the humor they make sounds plausible to reader to understand. They have occasionally male high school jokes on it, which silly but entertaining. I guess this is the most fun part (for me).
Negative Traits
I pretty much understand, because this is a MANGA (a shoujo to boot), THE CHARAS MUST HAVE A GOOD ENDING, NO MATTER WHAT (business stuff, I know), but OH COME ON!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!?
I totally pissed. Betraying and cheating is not cool. And with your best friend? Just to fucking heal your-oh-so-deep-past-scar-cus-our-important-person-didnt-understand-ours !!? yeah right, KISS MY ASS!!!
Tumblr media
tbh, i hope the author can wrap the ending more realistic, it sucks. like everyone can really forgiven their best friend betrayal. even though Kamiki and Takano affair didnt emphasize what they’ve been doing for the past 4 months, but God know it was an affair afterall.
So, Author-san, did they for the past 4 mos comforting each other with:
secret phonecalls - what? they just talking about their pain?
secret meeting - hmm? just having a dine in and talk about some painful moments/feelings? or did you guys comfort physically too?
petty talk - i understand your loneliness, and i hope we can fix it together even tho we dont love each other (we have bf/gf).
wow, talk about some serious bullshit here.
Tumblr media
I dont think that Takano and Kamiki have a platonic relationship. The Author hints too many mysterious and WTF moments between em. Moreover, WHAT WITH THAT BLUSHED FACE!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hohoho, what an obvious feeling, dont you think!!!?
Tumblr media
And in the end, it turns their affair wasnt that big deal. They simply forgiven because Kamiki have a knight complex and Takano just studied abroad, they comforting each other while doing nothing wrong (talk about self justification here).
Tumblr media
Dude, you missing the point. It’s not what you supposed to do in a relationship. That way of thinking is what all betrayers do (and thought) all over the world. You dont trust and respect your original partner in all manner accounts. You just completely disregard their true values, their feelings and somehow put them in a whole different dimension. You think you doing this for their sake, but whose sake we really talking about?!
To make it worse, even their own friends; Genda, Nogami, and Hanai - in unison that ‘their’ affair happen for some important reason and Maki and Fuyuka should forgive ‘em. YEAH RIGHT. TELL ME STRAIGHT TO MY FACE IF THERE’S ANY IMPORTANT REASON FOR ALL AFFAIRS IN THE WORLD.
OVERALL THOUGHT
This manga kinda complicated for me, i like it but at the same time i hate it. So maybe someday, I will give it a try to read it again; eventually like it. But for now, I just gonna avoid it as much.
Personally, this is was a quite good manga. The characters, plot, and artwork quite my liking. This is a shoujou manga but in the beginning it has a shounen ai tone (eventually it’s gone after the 2nd volume till end). I love such a setting, all boys dorm with many ikemen around, and it reminded me with  Komatta Toki ni wa Hoshi ni Kike! (Miyuki Abe) Well, tbh i kinda hope it turns more soft BL tho hahaha.
It started very good, a lot of humors side (daily life at boys dorms, school and friendship - totally hilarious), romance (those very typical high school), and slice of life. The climax was unexpected, but still good; well at least the Author able to make me swearing a lot at this chapter (hey, I’m praising her here). But seriously, the ending was totally SHIT.

@bthump right??? I have friends and a cousin who denies that there were any romantic feelings between them but I've noticed that most of the fans who deny it never provide evidence for their claims. I'm still waiting for my cousin to give me a reason(he's the only one I actually expect would come up with some evidence but I have evidence of my own) And another thing that gets me is that people know that Berserk was inspired by Devilman which was a shounen ai.
Yeah Devilman’s clear influence on Berserk and Guts and Griffith’s relationship trajectory is a pretty huge indicator lol.
hetero goggles tho man, they’re powerful. like Berserk is a story where one dude asks the other dude if he’s gay five minutes after they meet and that dude completely fails to answer, and people still manage to miss the subtext somehow.
@just-a-daft-punk not sure if I’m interpreting your comment correctly, do you mean guts and casca would’ve run off together earlier if it weren’t for casca’s feelings for griffith? because tbh i don’t see it myself, it took judeau practically shoving guts at her multiple times and then an attempted suicide and emotional breakdown for guts to make a move. and right before leaving he dismissed the idea of getting together with her out of hand because he wanted to prioritize finding a dream and becoming griffith’s friend.
like guts just didn’t really show any interest in her beyond leering at her in her dress once before his two chats with judeau imo.

Note
'clean yaoi' is shounen ai 少年愛 which means boys' love. like, literally boys' love. the youth's love. the young lad's love. shounen ai works have them pecking each other at most. the 'riskier ones' would have underlying sexual connotations or would hint at the boys doing the do off screen. sometimes, a shounen ai doesn't even have a kiss rip.
yaoi is homoerotica works. yaoi comes from yama nashi 山(場)なし ochi nashi 落ちなし imi nashi 意味なし which means no mountain peak (=orgasm), no drop (=feelings), no meaning. basically, have sex, fall in love... which isn't untrue lol in a lot of earlier yaoi works, the boys have sex first before they fall in love. either that or they're in love but they fck first before they figure out their shit. also, idk how to put this delicately but r*pe fantasy is heavily associated w/ yaoi.
(ive spent a lot of my adolescence reading yaoi, i am immune to so many shits u have no idea lol all the fck up shit u can think of, ive read it somewhere)
anyway, in JP, when we say BL we think of shounen ai which is vanilla stuff. u say yaoi and we go *horny thoughts* lol nearly all of 'mainstream' tv and movies adaptations from manga are from shounen ai mangas... kei x yaku, cheri mahou, restart ha tadaima, seven days (the one w/ the atrocious hair in OP's post lol but also my fav shounen ai). the yaoi ones i can think of are love stage and the takumi series. (and that one rated r movie w/ kidnapping & r*pe & drug + toy use which i forgot the name of fck it was insane but still managed to be less fckd than the manga asfghjkldi) there are a lot more yaoi anime than there are yaoi tv/movies tbh.
fun fact, 801 is a code for yaoi lol ya = 8, o = 0, i = 1 lol
then there are tanbi 耽美 and bara 薔薇 or バラ, which literally means 'rose' as in the flower rose.
tanbi isn't used anymore tbh... it referred to those really old gay romance that are usually really poetic and stuff and usually always between an older man and a younger boy. (JP had a history of older men doing the do w/ younger boys, it's a socially accepted AND expected thing at a certain point in history.)
bara refers to gay works created by and for gay people. mostly, people associated bara w/ muscly and hairy men but that's not true at all. that's such a bad stereotype tbh... ive read bara where they're perfectly normal looking men. basically, the men in bara are just normal men that exist in everyday life, not the idealized stick figures found in yaoi, which are usually targeted toward female audiences.
top-bottom dynamic doesn't really exist in bara works either. )top-bottom dynamic or, in jpn term, seme-uke 攻め-受け which literally means attacker and receiver, do u see the r*pe fantasy? lol) anyway, bara isn't exclusively pornographic... there's just a lot of explicit sexual content that are unashamedly realistic going on in bara content.
yuri 百合 or ユリ is the flower lily which symbolizes the beauty and purity of women in the jpn culture. it's used to refer to both pornographic and not pornographic lesbian works. girl's love isn't actually used a lot, surprising lol.
and pls don't use shoujo ai 少女愛... shoujo ai refers to the very illegal and not good pedophiliac fixation that older men have on young girls. think lolicon...
anyway, gay community in japan is sometime referred to as bara zoku 薔薇族 (= rose family) and lesbian community is referred to as yuri zoku 百合族
Hi fave bl encyclopedia ❤️
So my question is about Japanese bl, like I don’t understand it! Please help 😭
So I know japan is like the motherland of yaoi and they pretty much started it all, and they make some pretty graphic and explicit bls ( which is not my cup of tea tbh), but then they also have shows like cherry magic and keita and the most recent KEI X YAKU (I am watching this one rn, and I actually like it so very much) but for the life of me I can’t figure out why these shows are made with zero intimacy between the main couple, not even a simple innocent kiss?!
are these shows considered more mainstream? Are the yaoi only allowed in fandom space? And not in mainstream media?
Just why are these shows made the way they are?
Don’t get me wrong CM and KH are two of my absolute favorite bls of all times, but I still don’t get just… WHY?
Hi!
Tumblr media
The Weeds of Japanese BL
So I am going to go off of this blog post on the history of Japanese BL and yaoi and only bother to repeat myself if strictly necessary.
Top 10 BLs Out of Japan - top 10 plus history of BL (part 1 in the series on the history of BL)
Otherwise there would be a lot of rehash.
So my question is about Japanese bl, like I don’t understand it. Please help!
So have you read the above post? Because if you haven’t reading that will at least give you some kind of foundation for your understandable confusion.
But part of most people’s misunderstanding over Japanese BL actually has to do with the nature of Japanese cinema.
Here’s the thing, the Japanese have a very specific taste to their cinema. They have a style and lens that they stick to and (with a few noted exceptions) they pretty much haven’t deviated since the 1950s.
In film style there’s atmospheric (cinematic and sweeping, think Kurosawa) vs live action manga (think cartoonish, stylized framing and staging techniques meets slapstick).
In yaoi there’s light (sweet, clean, bright, airy) vs dark (erotic, serious, gritty, rough).
In the sexual sphere there's prudish & chaste vs kinky & explicit.
Everything seems to be bifurcated in Japan. Now on a very few occasions they can tread the line between the lanes, and borrow bits and pieces from different approaches, but most of the time they stick to those lanes pretty cleanly.
Tumblr media
I can’t figure out why these shows are made with zero intimacy between the main couple, not even a simple innocent kiss
Generally speaking, the shows that are very light very sweet and very bright, cartoony, with lots of slapstick elements will have little to no sexual contact at all: so Cherry, Mix Up, Ossan, Same Difference, and (I expect) Mr Unlucky to fall into this category. (I am not going to comment on KEI X YAKU since I didn’t watch it because it appears to be a censored bromance.)
Tumblr media
are these shows considered more mainstream?
Sort of, it’s more that they’re just considered a different category. Like how USA draws a distinction between the amount of sexual content that is allowed in a sitcom versus a soap opera. Similar kinds of topics, frameworks, filming style, and target demographics dealt with, but expectations around nudity and sexuality are way different. Different air times and lengths too.
This doesn’t seem weird to me because I grew up with soaps vs sitcoms. But if I step outside of my upbringing, it’s odd right? The nature of the sexual content is so different, but they’re mostly both family dramas with a ton of romance. And then the “late night” (read sitcom timeslot) soaps came along kinda blending the two. Ah... the 90s.
Where was I?
Okay so, why are they different? Because Japan thinks of them differently.
Tumblr media
Another thing to know about the Japanese film industry?
They take little to no interest in or guidance/feedback from the international market. They do not care. Their attitude, when something like Cherry Magic does well outside of Japan is... oh do the internationals like that one? How quaint. That’s special. Should we consider... distribution? *yawn* how tiresome.
Which is why a JBL will drop locally, get mad pirating and illegal subs and such, and then about half way through suddenly show up on a distribution platform like Viki or GaGa pretending it has always been there.
Can you sense my frustration? This is why backlist is so hard to get hold of too. But it KEEPS happening.
Like Japan just forgets about us.
Which is probubly because THEY DO.
Japan cares about their own internal market interest and style way way WAY more than any other BL producing country. (I would argue including Mainland China.)
Japan respects Japan’s taste.
PERIOD.
End of discussion.
Look at the HAIR.
Tumblr media
I rest my case.
When I talk about the fact that Japan has an unchangingly firm point of view? This is what I mean.
Set your expectations based on what Japan has done in the past, because that is what they will do in the future. You will never be disappointed. They will hold steadfast to their traditions, the good, the slapstick, and the kinky.
Tumblr media
Are the yaoi only allowed in fandom space?
Cherry Magic I would call both mainstream, popular, and live action yaoi.
Plenty of yaoi of this type (and back in the day) has very little on page kissing (or anything else for that matter), either. There is a whole sub-genre of sweet, or even clean, yaoi. Which is not to say it didn’t piss me off that they couldn’t actually kiss in Cherry Magic. Especial with that elevator fake out and the dead fish kiss from the side dishes. Very disappointing.
Might be expense involved. Talent ain’t cheep in Japan, might be too costly to have them kiss.
Or they just being coy teases about it.
Basically they brats, and we in a non-con kink relationship where they promise but never deliver kisses in some kind of weird passive aggressive D/s dynamic. Also, VERY Japanese.
Oh shit, my dating trauma is showing.
Ignore that last bit.
Just why are these shows made the way they are? Don’t get me wrong CM and KH are two of my absolute favorite bls of all times, but I still don’t get just… WHY?
I know it is super frustrating. I would like it if they just put at least one kiss in there too.
Here’s the thing: I happen to like Japan’s lanes, even as I am frustrated by them. Because when they do it well, they are square root of it all.
Get it???
SQUARE root?
Because, ya know, no kisses = so square.
Okay I’m pushing it.
But also the other lane gives us kisses = great = MURDER DEATH MUTILATION!!!!
Oh, Japan.
Tumblr media
Here’s some interesting stats on Japanese ‘s BL (or more properly LAY - live action yaoi) for you:
There’s still only about 55 of them.
High heat erotic LAY & pinks: 21
Light cheerful LAY in which there is little to no kissing, or it’s very dead fishy: 21
LAY that managed to be very yaoi but actually strike a balance between the two: 12 (and I include all the Takumi-kuns in here and they seriously might not qualify because... Takumi)
I just did the count for this post and it’s wild how even the split was.
(I’m missing some and not all are really BL, but with a sample of only 50+ it’s not really statistically viable anyway).
Tumblr media
If you want to really understand how Japan adapts yaoi you should delve into Love Stage!!:
Read the yaoi manga
Watch the anime
Watch the Japanese live action adaptation
Watch Thai BL adaptation
It’s a pretty informative experience. Tells you a lot about Japan’s relationship to the industry and genre that they started and how yaoi is treated differently in the different mediums.
Tumblr media
But honestly, the answer to your question is gonna really frustrate you.
This is all just Japan being Japan, and it’s the way they approach BL. Because it’s the way Japan approaches cinema.
Because, in the end, even if we call it BL, Japan is always going to do LAY, and that is kind of its own creature. The starter to the sour dough, not the bread that results.
Because Japan is always going to pick their lane and stick to it.
Having said that, here’s some LAY that actually manages to have all of the things we expect from BL including kisses!
Seven Days
Given
Life: Love on the Line
Restart After Come Back Home AKA Risutato wa tadaima no ato de
Utsukushii Kare AKA My Beautiful Man
That last one is absolutely amazing. See me lose my tiny mind over it and how it manages to be SO yaoi and SO Japanese and SO WONDERFUL despite everything. Or perhaps BECAUSE of everything.
Utsukushii Kare is a BL that actually no other country could make. It’s PURE uncut Japanese live action yaoi and it’s AMAZING partly because of that.
Tumblr media
Like I said above, Mr. Unlucky (AKA Fukou-kun wa Kiss Suru Shikanai!) is going to be an interesting test.
I, and many other aficionados of LAY, expect it to have no kissing. But it’s already odd in that it got its distribution sorted before it started airing. Like a goddamn adult. This is confusingly un-Japanese of it.
If Japan produces this as a slapstick comedy, in the vein of Kieta Hatsukoi (AKA My Love Mix Up), but it actually has decent kiss like Utsukushii Kare? It means Japan, whether it likes it or not, is finally being influenced by the popularity of Korean & Thai BL.
But if it doesn’t give good kiss, it means they are still sticking to their established traditions.
And this being Japan, my money is on the later.

On a scale from 1 to 10 how hard do you ship: 1) Yuumika 2) Rinharu 3) Karmagisa 5) Tododeku
What kind of hell is this… ranking my ships? xD
You know, I have lots of ships, but somehow I always find myself coming back to 3 of them that I can’t live without, like they’re always my obsession for some reason and Rinharu is one of them. And I mean it in a way “I don’t think there’s any unknown material left about these two for me, fictional or canonical that I haven’t seen, god knows how many times I’ve watched “Free!” and man, I’m a very emotionally constipated person, but I did woke up neighbours once yelling with my sister about them.”
And I want them to be together the most for sure, maybe because they’re right there with canonical stuff saying that they’re it for each other to the point of “the only one that makes me feel that way”. There are no canon girlfriends, Haru openly admitted to Rin that he “has no boyfriend and he’s free”, Rin.. well, we know that talk with australian parents; they can’t be seen as just friends I’m sure even for antis, and they’re so… I can’t explain… really perfect for each other and I just want them together so so soooo bad, like they can be together… like they’re so close… bitch I’m dying here. And I know creators are to scared to go there, but somebody explain them that they’re already there, I can’t imagine after seeing them longing for each other in this hellish season for Rin not to be with his shining, their dream finally came true, let’s wrap it for real, everybody knows friendship doesn’t feel like this.
I’m truly insane about them. As in “desperately need them to be together, need to gif every scene of them standing next to each other”. Plus when it’s this close, I guess it’s much harder than with a ship where you just imagine things.
I really don’t want to give mikayuu and tododeku less than 10, because I love them to death and think they’re perfection together, but they’re not my unhealthy obsessions. Mikayuu.. I just can’t imagine them not being together and they warm my heart in a way “they know they’re perfect for each other and everybody else in the anime knows it” which like I’ve already said is a rare thing for a non shounen-ai animes. I don’t get why they’be with anyone else, seems ridiculous to me with all the stuff they’ve been through and how they feel about each other. I’ll give them a 9, just because they’re not making me as crazy as Rinharu, not because I want them to be together less.
Tododeku is one of my top 5 ships. They’re like a super perfect combination that has soooo freaking much potential in my dreams. But the lack of canonical stuff throws me out of my dream land every damn time. Also I’ve read fics about todobaku and bakudeku (see, treason lol, with rinharu I would never read about them with other people, because… just no, can’t imagine that), liked some of them, but they don’t make my heart beat faster like tododeku loz. So yeah, I’ll give them a 9 also because, love them and can talk about them forever but not totally crazy about them.
Karmagisa, well, I enjoyed them very much during the anime and I always like seeing them on my dash, but I wouldn’t say I ship them super hardcore or would’ve made a post on “why the should be together” xD So Idk… a 6?
Tbh you should’ve asked “on a scale from 1 to Rinharu”… that’s how much I love them, they totally got my heart, I mean, I’d give them infinite points.
Tumblr media
P.S. I’d give a 10 to 3 of my ships only, I think. Because I know I’d squeel if I saw any new stuff about them.
