Some Reddie headcanons I have for absolutely no reason
- Eddie hates driving when Richie is in the car because Richie is an obnoxious backseat driver, but absolutely loves driving alone.
- Eddie also loves going on drives up in the mountains once he moves to LA with Richie, because he can speed like a maniac with 0 consequences because everyone is speeding
- Richie is extremely worried about Eddie when he goes out on joyrides because Richie is a surprisingly reasonable driver. But, Richie is too anxious to say anything for fear of sounding like Eddie's mother, so he opts to call Ben (who is similarly terrified for Bev constantly once she starts working through her post-divorce post-derry bucket list)
- Richie chews gum, but exclusively bubblegum flavored gum, never EVER mint, he thinks mint gum is sacrilegious (he also swallows the gum, of course)
- Eddie is addicted to KitKats and peanut butter cups
- Richie prefers sour candy to chocolate, except when he goes to the movies with Eddie and absolutely demolishes boxes of Raisinets which Eddie is horrified and disgusted by
- Eddie drinks venti lattes with multiple extra espresso shots like an absolute psychopath, as well as owning an elaborate at home coffee bar (Nespresso machine, torani syrups, fancy milk frother, coffee grinder) he's not a snob, but he is an absolute addict. Somehow he is never more jittery and anxious with caffeine than he is as base model non-caffeinated Eddie- if anything coffee mellows him out
- Richie, in spite of what changes in terms of money and fame, will always choose an iced vanilla coffee at McDonald's, or shitty diner coffee with a ton of creamer if under pressure and in need of caffeine. He also loves those disgusting canned oatmilk coffees
- Eddie is creeped out by people without allergies/intolerances chosing to drink alternate milks, and fiercely defensive of Whole Milk as the Superior Milk (it's just better! and nothing else tastes the same or froths the same for lattes)
- Richie will forget Eddie's order at restaurants and cafes they frequent, forget half their grocery list unless it's in text form, and literally cannot remember the name of his own prescription medication. Eddie has to text him reminders any time Richie is picking something up for them so he doesn't completely fuck it up. However, he's amazing at remembering Birthdays and Anniversaries.
- On a similar note, Richie has a fantastic singing voice but can't remember lyrics properly so he serenades Eddie with his own versions of songs (primarily focused on making Eddie elbow him in the gut for "being disgusting and ruining all music forever") whereas Eddie has impeccable memory with lyrics but can't sing for shit. This leads to constant arguments. Especially when involving Richie's rendition of Danger Zone. (Why the fuck would you choose "highway to my dick and balls"??? That doesn't even rhyme with danger zone)
- Eddie will not for the life of him go to the hospital even if he's literally been stabbed because anything medical to do with himself is a trigger, but any odd health concerns peers mention he can almost immediately give scarily accurate advice on- Richie frequently bothers Eddie about his own colds/pains/etc, especially about his headaches and wether or not they are migraines
("no, dickwad, you have a left side headache because you literally haven't had water since 2014"
"I have had... Drinks that contain water"
"Baja blast doesn't count")
- Richie's comfort meal is home cooked chicken noodle soup with ginger and lemon- if he is even slightly feverish he is doing his best sad, sick boyfriend eyes at Eddie about making it
- Eddie's comfort meals are a rotating cycle of Taco Bell, boxed mac and cheese, and frozen pizzas, but if he's even slightly sick he's fasting besides water, bone broth, and ginger tea- in his mind, comfort meals are for emotional pain, not physical sickness
- Richie temporarily worked as a Doordash/Uber Eats Driver
- Eddie secretly loves sappy emotional movies and shows, but pretends to only enjoy making fun of how much Richie likes them
- Richie's favorite Marvel character is Tony Stark, and he cried like a baby during Endgame

How the Duffers likely will make the general audience AWARE of Byler and CHEER for Byler
First the TL;DR. They'll probably do it with:
Revealing the Painting Lie
Will comes out to Mike
Will gets bullied for being gay, and Mike must make a choice
Mike and Will face danger together, alone, for the 1st time
And I'll spell out exactly how and why!
(CAVEAT: I can't claim to know 100% what will happen of course! This in the spirit of fun analysis and speculation.)
We in the Byler fandom have our theories: Flickergate, Lettergate, Churchgate, etc. While totally fun and while it would be amazing if they became reality, they don't answer the question of how the Duffers would manage audience expectations to make them accept and cheer for Byler.
Because we all know the reality: on a surface level, season 4 ended with a grand "love confession" from Mike to El. It appeared to have culminated a four-year arc that started from show's beginning. For the vast majority of viewers, a Byler relationship will be a HUGE SURPRISE.
This isn't just heteronormativity; it's also the fact that in every slow-burn romantic relationship in fiction, the story needs to openly tease "Will they or won't they?" for a while first. The audience needs to start thinking that these 2 characters (1) MIGHT be together, and (2) eventually that they SHOULD be together and cheer for them!
For Jonathan and Nancy, there were a lot of moments suggesting they MIGHT be together in Season 1. Then in Season 2, we had THIS episode (where Steve left Nancy wasted at the party) that made the audience think Nancy absolutely SHOULD be with Jonathan instead of Steve:
The show then dragged things out MORE before their first kiss.
Anti-Bylers raise a fair point that there "isn't enough time" to replace a relationship that seemed to have been "fulfilled" at the end of s4, with an entirely different one. Of course, the ground has been laid for four seasons, but HOW EXACTLY can the Duffers make the audience accept and cheer for Byler, after seeming to have "built up Mike and El for 4 seasons"?
Showing Byler is POSSIBLE:
First, the most obvious (and elegant) way for the Duffers to accomplish this is by revealing the Painting Lie.
The main things that make the General Audience/GA dismiss the idea that Mike likes Will back are that he (1) confessed "I love you" to El and (2) said things like "it's not my fault you don't like girls" and "we're FRIENDS" that suggest he can't be gay or bi.
The show has to address these two things, and there are ways that are pretty obvious.
The fact that El had no role in the painting COMPLETELY undercuts the "I love you" confession in the GA's mind. Milevens completely underestimate how this will affect Mike and El's relationship and how the audience will view it. El didn't commission the painting. When Will gave the painting, he wasn't describing El, but himself. Mike confessed his love to this false picture of El, one that was actually WILL.
When El finds out, she'll realize that Mike said he loved her based on a LIE. She'll realize that she accurately clocked Mike for not loving her when they argued in s4. It's likely that she'll take the initiative to break up or take a break in their relationship. (El deciding this will assuage concern that Will being with Mike would "betray" his own sister.) Mike might desperately try to repair things. Even if he does, this will show the GA that Mike's struggle for an entire season to say he loved El -- already very concerning for a romantic couple -- was a complete fiasco, and that Mike and El will PROBABLY NOT end up together.
Mike (and the GA) will be confronted with the fact that Mike felt romantic love for the first time because Will described HIMSELF. It will be apparent that Will would be a more suitable romantic interest... if he were a girl. =) It's just too bad that "Mike is probably straight"!
Now how to deal with that misconception?
We come to our OTHER Chekhov's gun that needs to fire: Will comes out to Mike. Will is still closeted at the end of s4, and his right to be out and find happiness is clearly central to his future arc. This HAS to be resolved. And he HAS to come out to his mom and his BEST FRIEND.
When he comes out to Mike, he of course won't spurn Will. Will probably explains he didn't come out earlier because he was afraid Mike would be homophobic because of what he'd said that summer, "It's not my fault you don't like girls":
If Will does, then Mike will have to explain why he said it. First, Mike probably apologizes and makes clear he accepts Will. The show (maybe Mike himself) might remind us that he defended Will from homophobia in s1. But this makes the GA wonder "Then why did he say it then?" And Mike might be exceedingly defensive when explaining himself. Will coming out to Mike is a golden opportunity to show the GA that NOT EVERYTHING IS AS IT SEEMS, and Mike might be dealing with internalized homophobia.
That's one way to signal that Mike might be gay or bi. And there's another!
We've been told that Season 5 returns to Season 1 themes. The Core Four are probably bullied for the Hellfire Club, and Will might be bullied for being gay. Ross Duffer says that s5 will center on Will's "emotional arc" and his "coming into his own as a young man," so his confronting homophobia in an 80s small town is quite likely. Since Mike and Will are joined at the hip in s5, the same accusation could easily extend to Mike. All this means that Mike will be confronted with the CHOICE of whether he'll stand up to anti-gay bullying. (Perhaps this is why there's a BTS pic of Mike with a bruise on his face?) It might be strongly implied to the GA that Mike is standing up, not only for Will, but for himself. Shrewd viewers would see the parallel to Mike defending Will from homophobia in s1, making them rethink that scene as well. (Defending Will INTENSELY would simultaneously suggest he's closeted AND clearly parallel Jonathan fighting Steve in s1, which showed Nancy that "only love makes you that crazy sweetheart, and that damn stupid.")
How Season 5 can make the GA CHEER for Byler:
Showing Byler is possible is the main obstacle; next is the much easier, and FUN (and agonizing) part!
First, the show has put Will through so much trauma and made clear how selfless he is, that the audience already wants him to have a happy ending. He almost certainly will suffer again in s5. We probably are reminded that as a gay person in the 80s he believes he's "not gonna fall in love." Meanwhile, the show has made clear that his love for Mike is PAINFULLY deep and won't simply go away.
Once the GA sees the POSSIBILITY of a Mike/Will romance as per above, their mental floodgates will open. As Jancy shows, It doesn't take much to get the audience to root for a relationship, after the seeds are planted. And Byler has FOUR SEASONS of seeds for the GA to look back on with fresh eyes!
How to recall those 4 seasons of material? We already know that Will is in danger and we'll see a return of "leader Mike" in s5. This likely will include callbacks (and even flashbacks) to Mike and Will's relationship in s1 and s2. There's the newly-filmed flashback from when they were young kids. This all will bring their long-time closeness to the fore in viewers' minds. But with the artifice of Mike's relationship with El knocked away, they will see it as potentially romantic and realize that this show seems to have secretly been building them up as a romantic couple all along.
Add to all that: we likely will have Will and Mike facing danger together, alone, for the first time:
It was Jonathan and Nancy facing danger together in s1 that made the vast majority of viewers ship Jancy. Mike and Will facing danger will put their LOVE (remember: the audience already accepts them as best friends who love each other!) and their willingness to RISK THEIR LIVES for each other to the fore. Callbacks, flashbacks, and dialogue will remind the GA of their sacrifices for each other: Mike putting Will before everything in s1 and s2, and Will sacrificing his feelings to help Mike be with El. They might hug each other after a near-death experience and have a mutual Gay Panic, which will be a callback (and contrast) to their non-hug at the airport. Millions will say "They should just kiss already."
There are SO MANY WAYS to get the audience cheering for Byler.
Will probably lives in Mike's house because the Byers don't have their own house in Hawkins anymore. Mike, if he doesn't know already at the season's start, will KNOW the painting came from Will and wonder if it was romantic. The tension between them in s5 will make s4 look like nothing in comparison.
When Will comes out to him, Mike might ask, "Is... there anyone you like?"
He'll ask NERVOUSLY, like he once did before:
Will probably won't answer honestly; he might make up another boy! ("I met him in California. We like a lot of the same things. He even likes D&D...") To which Mike says, "COOL." (BTW, this could obviously echo the airport scene and make viewers reassess and understand that as another miscommunication!) This leads to a new cycle of these two boys thinking their love is unrequited LOL.
Only this time the General Audience will be fully aware of it. The miscommunication trope widely used in fictional TV romances will not only tell the GA that Byler should happen, but WILL happen. Will and Mike become THE "Will they or won't they?" couple that everyone is talking about. Mike's sexuality and his feelings for Will probably aren't officially revealed until mid or late season in order to let the excitement build. If Season 5 is released in more than one volume, there will be a flurry of videos and articles revisiting past seasons, finding evidence of Mike's feelings for Will that we Bylers have curated for years. Except for a few vocal homophobes, the show will make the GA (even people who don't watch analysis videos online) fully onboard with a Byler conclusion before it happens; the SHOW ITSELF will set-up and tease it and make the GA desperately want these boys to "just kiss already."
Season 5 will be messy. And glorious. And the most Byler season of all.

DM-GATE (a st/byler theory)
if you saw this last night, strap in. because this post is about that
so me and @reo-bylerwagon were talking about how weird mike's dialogue is in s4, specifically in his monologue. it's so....corny. his monologue just doesn't sound like stranger things. mike just doesn't talk like that ever. characters who are overly dramatic and corny are made fun of by other characters. the show just doesn't train you to accept something as corny as mike's monologue, especially from MIKE. mike just isn't that kind of character.
we also pointed this dramatic dialogue between mike and will in the van. will's monologue to mike is very sweet but the dialogue is kind of corny too. will compares mike to a knight in shining armor, leading and inspiring as the heart of the party.
and i, in a moment of completely oblivious genius, said "honestly in the monologue he uses the same voice he does when he's dm"
if you don't know what dm is, it means dungeon master. the dungeon master is the one in dnd who leads the adventure, the organizer.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/735a33ff0ad17825fc7e2950b761ca74/5963902badd4c294-84/s540x810/74475b8f7d2759c1284bb792102a0f5ee4b91a53.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e57ca363f70ea6e4714c1a722805372d/5963902badd4c294-ab/s640x960/463d145d9e696acebdddf31f54e2d0b28dd52b22.jpg)
this is the role mike has in season 1 when they're playing dnd. will is also dm in s3 when they briefly play, right before the byler rain fight. eddie is the only other character we see be dm.
dms have to be eccentric, they have to act. they have to be convincing. they have to lead and guide.
in the painting will gives mike, the party are depicted as their dnd characters. so no one can even say this isn't connected to dnd.
"See how you're leading us? You're guiding the whole party, inspiring us. That's what you do.
See your coat of arms here? It's a heart. I know it's sort of on the nose, but that's what holds this whole party together. Heart. Because, I mean, without heart, we'd all fall apart."
in the monologue when will calls back to their conversation in the van, this is symbolic of mike reverting back to his role as dungeon master, as leader. if mike has to lie in the monologue, of course he would pull from a role he's played where he makes things up and sounds convincing.
@reo-bylerwagon gave the best line ever, "he's being the mike in the painting"
and the craziest part is that's CANON. mike is inspired by what will says, he takes it to heart. he feels more confident. he tries to be the mike in the painting. it should be easy, to speak from his heart to el, but it's not, because he's not in love with her. in the monologue, mike is doing the same thing he does when he's dm. he's performing. he's trying to be convincing. he's trying to guide, to inspire.
also, @reo-bylerwagon said that will pushing mike to giving the monologue is giving "MIKE YOUR ACTION!!" WHICH IS SO FUCKING TRUE😭😭
after this realization i went back and watched the scenes where mike is dming. the VERY FIRST LINE OF DIALOGUE we hear in the show is mike dming. "Something is coming, something hungry for blood." and the second line?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c7255460ec72259061b21766468ede8c/5963902badd4c294-fb/s540x810/f869d503ec982badea019898d47c4ab6d9534fb6.jpg)

i could never put a finger on why mikes language in the monologue seemed so weird. it's because he's talking like a dm. he's using the dramatic language dms use during a dnd session.
@reo-bylerwagon also pointed out that mike and will are piggybacking off of dnd to save el. everyone in the final fight was piggybacking.
will set the stage, mike executed.
also, i mentioned the only other character see be dm besides mike and will is eddie.
and what is eddie's big moment in s4?
Master of Puppets.
MASTER. OF PUPPETS. DUNGEON MASTER. DUDE.
and another thing
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c4941115a4b3a199fda5db078f57fcd6/5963902badd4c294-f0/s540x810/975f189d1b155ec96113ba6a961b7a763158a22e.jpg)

we've all seen this, but it's not only that mike and will's characters are on the book.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/096d5399803a57496e381cd30b542a72/5963902badd4c294-b0/s540x810/02e2df3a3d1d1e82b99382a6ee8233b6f645bf9f.jpg)
it's a dungeon masters guide.
with mike and will's characters on it.
mike and will. the only party members we've seen be dungeon masters.
COME THE FUCK ON.
AND ANOTHER THING
"Dude, that's the donation box."
"I know, I'll just use yours when I come back. I mean...if we still wanna play."
"Well yeah but...what if you want to join another party?"
"Not possible."
this is a dm i got like 2 years ago that changed my brain chemistry:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/967d831c27dbf02b74f316a55d7757e4/5963902badd4c294-77/s540x810/05ee079ff04ef420435f2cb93491faf3f3b09b2f.jpg)
this is NOT a reach. everything in st is compared to dnd. the duffers are massive dnd nerds. it is not unbelievable that they'd connect this to dnd as well.

I loved reading the Byler slides as much as the next guy, but my only gripe about it is how Mike is said to be using El as his beard from day one. I think some Bylers skip over the connection that Mike and El have, because they do have one, even if it isn't romantic.
They've been bonded together by trauma and Mike (in my opinion) was pressured into beginning a romantic relationship with her because he's a boy, and she's a girl.
Me personally, I don't think either of them really have romantic feelings for the other. El maybe, but I still feel it was a relationship built off of societal pressures and being too young to really understand.
My overall point is, I don't think Mike used El as his beard, but rather is in the relationship because of his own comphet. He sees the relationship as what he ''should'' be doing so the feelings that he is feeling must just be normal, right?
The end of season 3 is his ''oh'' moment for me. When El tells him that she loves him and kisses him, I think that's when he realised, ''Yeah I should... probably be feeling something right now. And I'm not. Oh.'' And, without El in Hawkins to remind him what he ''should'' be, he's able to be himself a little bit more. Grow out his hair, be an outcast, the whole shebang.
Again, all my personal opinion, but I am a firm comphet Mike truther. :))

Byler doubt?
This isn’t even about bad writing
Will is one of the characters the Duffers care the most.
They didn’t give Will a place in the main plot in two seasons for a reason.
They said it themselves after s2, Will should be away from the Upside Down drama for a while.
He should just have a normal life as a kid, with his own struggles while growing up.
It was on purpose, they wanted to give him a break, at least a break from Henry and the MF.
And guess who is the one that leads the party when Will is in danger?
Ofc is Mike.
So, as Will is in the “side line” Mike is kind of too.
They were always a team, their dynamics in the story take the same amount depending of each other.
It’s not the same with the other characters.
So, it’s kind of logic that now, the story will get even better for them, if Will is in the spotlight, so is Mike.
And with the feelings they have now, it would be weird they don’t get to be together.
Their slowburn was specially for this moment.
I don’t know how it will be resolved in general, but I do know (I’m actually pretty sure) that Will and Mike’s scenes were beautifully shot. The dialogues, the cinematography, everything.
Now that is almost exposed to the audience, the directors will go crazy with them.
So, the real question is
Are you guys ready for Byler happening?
Cuz I’m not 😆

why byler is the only logical way to end stranger things: a personal opinion
long post incoming. i've been thinking about what else can they do other than canon byler or is there any logical way which would please everyone. but i genuinely can't find any logical ending.
first of all, let's see the options i heard from people who doesn't think byler is gonna happen.
not adressing will's love for mike, mike never finding out about it and will's arc simply focusing on supernatural part : well, we all know that's impossible. not after spending a whole season to show us his deep love for mike. also it's confirmed that an emotional arc for him is what is gonna tie up the story.
"his love for mike was for him to explore his sexuality, he's gonna have another boyfriend." : they could easily show it to us without bringing mike into it. the byers moving to california was a perfect chance for it since it's a place better than hawkins when it comes to LGBT, they could easily give him a love interest, include him to their journey to find el just like they included argyle and give him a good character arc in s5, just like robin in s4. well, they didn't.
"mike is gonna reject will" : okay, then what was the reason of making him fall in love with mike? did the writers want to write a horrible story for the only gay child in the group? especially after showing us how miserable he feels about mike and how much he loves him? no.
now let's look deeper at the character arcs. my biggest reason to think byler is the only logical way is: will byers
i don't think i have to mention how much will suffered throughout the show and how he needs the happiest ending. they left season 4 at a point where everything about that love triangle is unresolved and they're obviously going to do something with it.
we all know mike is the one who understands will the most. he always been, since the very beginning. we've been shown that their bond is different and special. in a scenario where mike rejects will, we all know this is gonna be ruined. will is not gonna magically bury his love and go back to being besties with mike. and for mike, it's not possible for him to ignore will's love for him and stay friends as nothing happened. it would ruin their friendship for absolutely nothing.they can't simply take the only one who understands away from him.
will said he wants to spend the rest of his life with mike for two times. even if he doesn't have any hope, he desires it. so why giving him a love that he will never have? in this scenario will's character arc is literally "the gay kid always thought he will never have love just because he is gay, he thinks it's wrong and he is a mistake, well yes, he was right! he will never find the love and just watch the other straight people have it. thanks for watching stranger things." will's arc should be an arc where he is proven wrong, where he understands it's okay to love, where he is loved the way he loves, purely. otherwise his character arc is gonna be useless. where did we leave will in s4? he was thinking there's no chance for mike to love him and he has zero hope-- he ripped off the band aid. if mike rejects him the character arc and all the build up in season 4 becomes useless. he was at zero, and he is still at zero.
like i said giving him an arc where he is loved the way he loves was easy to be done without mike but now it's too late. they made it super clear that will doesn't want to be loved, he wants to be loved by mike. mike hurts him yet he still thinks mike makes him feel like he's not a mistake at all. that's not a simple crush. that's pure love. as a writer of a show you don't spend too much time to sympathize the characters love to the audience -something you never did with your other characters, at least not as much as will- you don't show them pouring their heart to a gift, just to waste it, just to make the character feel the worst they can feel just to make the person they love happy. will loves mike such a way that he prioritizes his happiness over his. this is what is gonna pay off.
the second character whose character arc needs byler: mike wheeler
mike has always been the most complicated character of the show, but most of his actions have no explanation other than him dealing with his own feelings. the show introduced mike as the leader of the party and i think it's okay to say he was one of the main characters in season 1 & 2. what happened after s2? a crazy character downfall. the audience started to dislike him and think he is useless. he didn't have any character development in the past 2 seasons. why? why? why?
because we all just watched him struggling. dealing with something inside of his mind that we don't know.
let's talk about a scenario where byler doesn't happen. this makes all mike's arc about being a love interest since s3. no development, no explanation for his behavior in the past 2 seasons. of course mike is traumatized and never talks to anyone which effects his behavior a lot. but there's still an unanswered question. why is he distancing himself from will specificially? the writers showed us that they understand each other the best, they know each other the best and notice if somethings wrong, so why is he distancing himself from the person who he needs the most as a best friend?
this is where we start to think if the problem is will himself, for mike.
why did we make will fall in love with mike just for mike to distance himself from will for no reason and make will upset? did we want will to suffer for no reason or create an empty storyline?
if mike is not how we think he is, he is going to end the show with an empty character arc who is nothing but a love interest, a side character. if mike ends up how we think he is, he is going to be the best onscreen representation of internalized homophobia. people think he is useless or just an asshole but he will turn out to be a perfectly written character who has his own arc.
people love to say "gay people didn't exist in 80s, byler would be unrealistic." which is completely wrong. gay people DID exist in 80s and they DID find love. did they have peace? they didn't. this is why mike and will are gonna be a real representation. we watched all the real struggles they went through. even if we don't get to see them as a couple, they will know they love each other by the end and that's what matters. and there's nothing unrealistic about it.

thinking about how milevens tend to assume that bylers want mileven to break up just because we want byler to happen.
no love
wanting byler to be canon and wanting mileven to break up are two separate wants.
Mike and El have their own story outside of will. Even if Mike wasn't queer and Will wasnt around this story would still be their story. Will may be a character in their story but the story is still about mike and el. Mike and Els story line is the marriage of the two of their two individual character arcs.
El's story arc is based around the fact that she was abused as a child and was dehumanized to an extreme level that no child should ever experience. She does not have an identity of her own. She wasn't raised to even expect to have one in the first place. Her story is learning to be able to her own person. To just be herself and learning who that person is.
When she met mike she created an identity around him. and identity of being the super powered mage who saved the day. that was El. then she became mikes gf and suddenly she was now "mikes gf". It wasnt until she met max that someone actually tells her that she is allowed to be her own person. "theres more to life than stupid boys" "what feels right" before Max she was just existing trying to play a role of what she was supposed to be rather than figuring out who she was or who she wanted to be. What she wanted. El is not raised to have wants. El was raised to be a weapon, a lab rat, a tool that does what they are told.
When this story intersects with a story arc like Mike has you get the disaster that is Mileven.
Mikes story arc is actually very similar. Mike is a very codependent person. He wants to feel needed. he wants to feel useful. If he doesnt have a use to someone he thinks he must be a waste of space. Mike doesnt know who he is outside of other people. He has never explored what he wants for himself. He is for other people. As a codependent person myself i can relate to this a lot. It can be hard to know what YOU want for yourself, outside of people you care about. Mike puts his loved ones before himself so much to the fact that it tends to get him into trouble more often than not. The issue with being codependent is that you become almost blind to who YOU are and what YOU need. you suppress your emotions for other people and these emotions only tend to surface when you realize that holy shit. i cant do anything here. This is the situation mike is finding himself in during season 4 and continuing into season 5. there is nothing he can do anymore. it is clear that him putting el above his own feelings and giving her what she wants in his attempt to help is not working. In fact its HURTING his relationship with el. Now mike doesnt know what to do. so he's drifting. El was his trauma partner. when things get too hard and too confusing he retreats into "el mode" where his only thought is what El needs. This is not a healthy mindset AT ALL. no matter how much the media romanticizes that sort of thing. IT IS NOT HEALTHY. you cant live like that. but now El has communicated "i dont want that. stop lying and get your shit together".
so mike is stuck. and el is stuck.
because theirs is a coming of age story. however not all coming of age stories are romantic. Mike and El cannot communicate with each other. they are both selfishly selfless in the way they treat each other.
I am going to be who you want me to be because i think thats what you want and it makes me feel secure.
this is not something you want in a relationship. a relationship is based on trust and vulnerability. being able to be youre rawest and truest form of yourself for another person. and feeling seen and loved despite it.
this is not present AT ALL in mileven as a couple. they are both discovering who they are still and are not space to be doing that in a relationship where they feel the need to hide themselves from each other. you cant find yourself that way.
wow look how much nuance i pulled from mike and el without mentioning will once. wow its almost like will is not the reason their relationship is failing

It's funny that not only your posts but other bylers' posts always talk about how much Will does for Mike, how much he loves Mike and how much his actions say that vehemently and I absolutely agree with that. But when it comes to Mike's part, there is absolutely NOTHING to prove that Mike loves him back, where did you guys get that from? Will always sacrificed himself for Mike, always tried his best to protect him, but Mike never did much for him. Yes, I know you will deny this with some passive aggressive response, deep down you know this is true, Mike does not respond to Will's feelings, much less to the same extent. Just as you say El is unhappy with Mike, Will would be too, you should also want someone better for him.
Bestie I wrote a 20 pages document about Mike's thought process and made 300+ power point slides about Mike's character and Byler, I love Mike Wheeler with all my heart and he would be the best boyfriend to Will and he will be 🥰
Mike has been the heart and fought more than anyone else (except maybe his family) to get Will Byers to safety and he loves him with an intensity that you can only have in your dreams because someone that actively spends their time sending annoying asks about a fictional ship can't be a good person in my opinion
YOU are the one that has such a low idea of Mike Wheeler and you still want him with El?
You're not watching the show correctly if you think that Mike is anything else than a boy with the biggest heart and the bravest behaviour on that freaking TV show
Mike Wheeler is the reason why they got Will back in season 1, he never gives up on his friends and wants them all to be happy and he loves and supported Will through his difficult time in season 2 and even in all the other seasons, he's always there for him when he needs him the most and without him Will would be literally dead, Will's speech in the van talking about how Mike inspired him to be brave and keep going was not just Will saying random shit, we have multiple moments between them since season 1 where Mike shows his love for Will
It's not Mike's fault that he doesn't know about Will having feelings for him, it's not Mike's responsibility to make Will feel better for his jealousy or heartbreak and it's not his fault if WILL decides to lie to him about the painting, Will is completely aware of that, you apparently are too stupid to get it
Mike being a dumb teenager a few times in the show doesn't make him enemy number one, all of them have been dumb teens because it's normal that they are while dealing with all of the big feelings they are all experiencing, as is normal that they will all grow up and change and learn how to deal with them in a better way
Believing that Mike doesn't love Will is the real delusion ❤️
Some examples of Mike loving and deeply caring about Will:
I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO CARES ABOUT WILL to his family after Will goes missing
Fights for him in season 1, convincing the others to go out in the woods just to have Will back with him
After he thinks Will died he goes home and cries to his mother, desperate
Has a whole scene where he's focused on caressing the drawings Will made because he misses him so much
Convinces El to use the radio so that they can find him, bringing her to school just for that reason
Beats up a bully that would have 100% kicked his ass twice harder if it wasn't for Eleven, just because he insulted Will
Is Will's best friend since kindergarten and Will made him stop feeling alone and scared, they found companionship with each other since they were basically infants
In season 2 when Will is showing signs of not feeling well he's the most worried for him and he said so to his friends
Takes care of him when he has the Halloween episode, brings him to his home and they talk and share confidences and Will feels understood by Mike and opens up to him, Mike never judges him for "being crazy" and actively wants to go crazy together with Will, they do this for each other again and again and again during the whole show and during their whole friendship
He listens to him when Will talks about Dart being from the upside down and immediately believes him
When Will is missing from school he's so worried that he decides he has to go to his house to check on him after seeing him have the episode on the school field
Stays with Will and reassured him and gave him courage and strength and made him feel like he has some agency in what's happening to him by telling him that maybe he can spy on the monster and he's not completely powerless
Stays with Will in the hospital to support him through everything.
Mike saves his life again in season 2 with his speech btw and he also saves him by having a plan to fight the mind flayer with the fire and also understands that they can't close the gate if Will has that inside him still, he is the first one to think about Will's wellbeing again and worry about him...
In season 3 he's a dumb teenager so yeah, he's distracted by his brand new relationship and hormones, but when Will actually opens up to him about the fact that he's hurting their friendship because of that Mike IMMEDIATELY takes action and changes his behaviour, he takes Will's opinions in such high regards and takes them to heart and acts accordingly
He apologizes to him for being dumb and acting out FIRST thing and then he changes for the rest of the season and goes back to being the best version of himself ( his relationship with El is part of what is making him act like that btw, like Nancy was acting like a dumb teen in season 1 because of Steve and Barb told her but she didn't listen and then Jonathan told her and she did listen, they are kids that's what kids do because of peer pressure and wanting to fit in, it happens since the dawn of time )
When Mike loses Will we have a whole ass scene dedicated to that showing Mike's internal thoughts even if we don't hear him say what he thinks yet he's devastated again
He's suffering as much as Will is.
In season 4 we are given hints that he even tried to call Will and WILL was the one really pulling away, he's not "the bad guy" he was 100% right here. Will is speechless because he is in the wrong here, Will was pulling away and feeling jealous and feeling abandoned because he has feelings for Mike but Mike felt the same exact thing, he felt like he lost Will too, they understand each other on a deep emotional level, they have a bond that El and Mike did not really show on screen imo
Will feels comfortable opening up to Mike and so he is always ready to do the same for him, he sits down and listens to Mike's fears and feelings because he loves him, exactly like Mike listens to Will again and again
They make each other feel loved, all the love Will felt from him in season 2 Will is now giving it back to him in season 4
It's funny that they were still in a supposed fight in this scene lol they are such simps for each other!!!
Mike Wheeler's love for Will is like breathing, he doesn't realize but he's doing it at all times 🥰
There's more reasons and more scenes but I can only put 10 GIFs so I'll stop here, I'm sure you won't even read this because you're just that type of person that doesn't even have the balls of having a real conversation with someone instead of attacking them randomly just because you feel insecure as fuck 🫶

Dropping Byler Evidence Every (Other) Day Until Season 5
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ Day 23: Airport Hug(s) . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁
I haven't done one of these in a little bit because I'm just getting moved back in at university but I'm glad to be back! This time, we are looking over Mike and El's airport hug vs. Mike and Will's.
These two scenes are extremely different. It is clear which one the writers and directors gave more importance. AKA which one is supposed to be the main focal point of the scene. If you think that the meeting scene in the airport is supposed to be all about Mil*ven and how cute their relationship is, I'm sorry but you are not watching the same show as I am. The airport hug between Mike and El and the airport 'hug' between Mike and Will are supposed to convey these messages:
Something is wrong with Mike and El's relationship and they are trying to push it down, meaning it will come to the surface later.
It has something to do with the way Mike's acting.
Something has changed internally within Mike between Season 3 and Season 4.
This something is to do with Will.
You are supposed to notice Mike's actions towards Will more than his actions towards El.
This is how I will structure this ESSAY ASS POST
Number One:
Something is wrong with Mike and El's relationship. It may not seem this way from the beginning, in fact, it seems very much like they are back to the way they used to be at the beginning of S3, apart from the making out- um yeah, so it all seems well. But that's the thing.
Developed relationships with depth, relationships that the audience need to crave for, do not get presented in this super cutesy, teenager-y love way. Unless there are other stakes. In Stranger Things, it is apparent to us that there is always something off when characters seem Too Happy. Something will go wrong, things won't stay the same as they were at the beginning of the Season. I really don't know how to describe it, but basically what I'm saying is, even in their cute moments, the audience needs to sense that something is off. Even if it's very minute.
The kiss is cute. But that's all it is. There are no stakes behind it, nothing bad has happened yet, which is why an audience who likes the couple already may feel happy with it. But a GA may be able to sense that this is unlike other kisses or meetings in ST. The kiss is not after a fight, the kiss is not after a long time of pining, the kiss is not an 'i can't lose you' kiss, the kiss is not a 'relief after a long time of fighting through something' kiss. It's just a kiss.
You may be thinking this is a bit harsh, but the GA also know another thing. El is lying to Mike. Her letter foreshadows problems for their relationship instantly.
From her letter, we know that she is lying about having a good time at school and in California. The audience may then believe that there must be something wrong with their relationship if she feels the need to lie. Especially El, the one who always says 'Friends don't lie' and got annoyed at Mike lying last season.
So this kiss isn't supposed to be cute. It's supposed to be tense. Because we are supposed to know that she's lying to him, and narratively, the truth always gets revealed.
Therefore, the audience is supposed to take away from this interaction not that Mike and El are a cute couple, but that El is trying to hide stuff for a reason.
And the audience quickly gets their reason why:
Number Two:
The reason why El's been so weird with Mike, the question that is ringing around in the audience's head get's half-answered with the next sequence.
The audience should know that something is wrong based on the way that the happy music suddenly shifts to something far more morose, and El looks hesitant before faking a smile. JUST as she fakes her happiness in her letters.
Therefore, the audience sees it is somehow Mike's fault she feels the need to act this way. So far, we have ticked off two problems in their relationship: El is lying to Mike, and El seems upset at the unfeeling note Mike made. These must be linked together.
I also think that the audience see that it is signed in such an unfeeling way, despite the kiss. This means that the kiss at the beginning no longer seems genuine at all. So obviously, the audience must be wondering where this is all coming from , and why Mike is upsetting El.
Number Three:
Something has changed internally within Mike. The time between Season 3 and Season 4 has drastically changed Mike's actions towards both El and Will. We know that suddenly Mike is being unfeeling towards her in his note, meaning that the rest of his interactions don't seem as genuine to the audience. This may be a different view they had from Season 3.
They have just been introduced to a change in El's behaviour towards Mike (she now lies to him), meaning there must have been a change in Mike's behaviour to have caused this. And this is all internal between seasons:
What changed?
Now, we should get the answer when we look back at the end of Season 3. Mike looks back at Will's house. He hugs his mom like he's numb and just realised something huge. The monologue over the top keeps saying how he doesn't 'want things to change'.
Later, in the apology scene in Will's room, we find out that Mike was afraid of losing Will, which is why he got mad at Will seeming standoffish.
SO WE GET THIS SCENE WHERE WE ARE INTRODUCED TO MIKE BEING SUPER WEIRD WITH EL AND THIS IS ODD SO HE MUST HAVE CHANGED AND THEN HE ACTS WEIRD WITH WILL SO IT ALL POINTS TO.........
Number Four:
The reason why he has changed with El is because of Will. The reason why he seems so unfeeling towards El yet so disingenuous and unlike himself is all because of Will. The way he acts, the way he writes notes, it all boils down to this moment in the scene.
Will is reason he's nervous. Will is the reason things have shifted.
If something has changed internally within Mike to clearly act differently enough with El to make her lie to him, AND something to make him act weird with Will, then they must be linked together.
Besides, if we want to go the super obvious, on the face of it analysis - Mike is simply nervous because his feelings have been realised. He doesn't want to let them show so he can keep up this disingenuous relationship with El. He just wants to seem normal. It all adds up.
Harking back to El's letter, she mentioned one thing about Will, and that was that he was painting something for a girl that he had never told Mike about. And Mike acts standoffish about the painting when Will confirms that it probably isn't for him. It's clear as day - he's nervous to keep up this facade, he's jealous that Will's not making paintings for him, and he's been scared of losing Will (confirmed later on).
I mean, this might be all well and fine. Mike might not be having an impactful scene with Will, after all--
OKAY I CAN'T EVEN TYPE IT OMG ONTO THE NEXT POINT
Number Five:
Mike's big problem has to boil down to Will. This is proven by the fact that we are supposed to focus on this interaction far more than his interaction with El.
First of all, it is important to note that the directors of the show are intentional with where they place extras during a scene. They have free will, and we an see their choices being made during the airport reunion.
In the first and last Milkvan kissing scene, the camera is focused on them, yes, but it is very busy. Watch the shippers try to edit this scene, the duffers really said. I mean, it was so hard to take a screenshot of them without a person in the way of the camera. This is not by accident.
Mike is wearing a visor, he's holding a bag so he can barely hug her, he's also wearing sunglasses inside?? You can't see his facial expression, making this seem even more disingenuous. Again, people are moving in front of the camera, it's very very busy.
It's supposed to be a little overwhelming. That is not a coincidence, they aren't filming in an actual busy airport. So so many extras walk in front of them during the whole scene, not just the kiss, but while they are speaking as well.
Compared to the scene with Will...
No extras pass in front of them, the camera is closed in on their facial expressions, making them very clear without obstruction what they are feeling. This tells the audience to look quickly! This is important!
This is why the main takeaway from this scene is not at all about how 'cute' Mil*ven are. It is supposed to remind you of the problems in Mike and El's relationship, introduce that Mike has changed between S3 and S4, making him seem disingenuous and wanting to seem 'normal'. And that this is all because of something to do with Will.
And based on the clues that he's repressing a lot of his emotions all of a sudden, he's heard that Will is painting for someone else, he's being unfeeling toward El because of Will for some reason..... Mike's problem is that he is trying to deny or repress feelings for Will.
Atp it seems too obvious to post.

I WILL STAY SHRIEKING ABOUT THIS FOR ETERNITY IF THEY DON'T
if they don’t use the 12” version of smalltown boy in ST5 i will fucking riot. it is literally 9 minutes long. it has multiple instrumental breaks (space for dialogue) and different versions of each verse so the story can build up alone with the song. for instance, it provides ample time for mike to get vecna’d accompanied by byler flashbacks a la running up that hill.
they cannot forego this opportunity.
#but also i will shriek if they do use it#it's toooo perfect#it's so much more haunting than the radio cut#and yes long instrumental breaks#perfect bg music!!!#but shit even if they used it as credit music for one such episode#it's just.......agh#it's so byler#it's why i like that they didn't put that version on mike's playlist#it should be saved for the show#also the 1987 studio version of the promise by when in rome#that's just like....the final end credits of the show to me#it HAS to be#maybe i am expecting too much but still#i am correct#and so is op#st5 hopes#st music#st playlist#byler playlist#byler songs#byler music#st5 speculation#byler s5#byler#byler st5#smalltown boy#the promise

thinking about loz byler au again (breath of the wild specifically rn) and my brain keeps going "oooh the party as the champions" bc it sounds like it works out PERFECTLY there are 6 people in the party there's 6 champions if we count link and zelda, who are obviously mike and will, and then I remember that this would mean 4 of them have to be dead for like. the entirety of the main plot
#and other issues#like anyway the way I'm thinking about this is max=urbosa lucas=revali dustin=daruk el=mipha#it wouldn't be a direct one to one thing obviously. for a variety of reasons#idk like it sounds good on instinct and then I start thinking about the specifics of it and get confused idk I wish I could solve problems#bc like. details related to each specific champion and whatnot. like. urbosa knew zelda's mom. that can't work#and then like. who would be the champion's successors then?#I think el in mipha's position would work pretty well actually which is making me want to fit#the rest of the party in the other roles but it doesn't work the same. well actually no lucas and dustin are fine#probably bc revali and daruk are each Just Some Guy#whereas urbosa and mipha are characters who have actual history with link and zelda#and therefore more details in the lore that you have to work around#ok the issue is mostly max as urbosa and then the things with the champion's successors#like. mipha has a little brother. el does not. and I mean it could be any family member theoretically but that's kind of confusing for el#IDKKK#I'm thinking about this too hard bc its not like I'm gonna do anything with it#I should think about the skyward sword loz au instead that one's easier#only questions you have to answer there are who gets to be groose and who's impa#I can't figure those out either#loz byler

I just made a HUGE discovery for a possible song featured in Stranger Things 5 for BYLER, PLEASE hear me out 😭
This song, is called "Bizarre Love Triangle" and guess when it was released...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/42c91a8280be116fa1c9bce0919c91b0/f1e5f5e2f7a10d3a-dd/s540x810/bc0c3775bac25f86f823388250caca38a7032951.jpg)
In November 1986 (the year and possible month the season is settled). I'M CRYING.
This song, talks about a Love Triangle. It is gender neutral, so we can totally interpret it the way we want, so here's mine:
The love triangle is obviously Mike - Will - Eleven. Now why bizarre? Because it is not two boys in love with the same girl, but one boy and one girl in love with the same boy, and that boy not sure if he likes the girl or the boy...
Let's see the lyrics shall we?
FIRST VERSE:
Every time I think of you
I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue
It's no problem of mine, but it's a problem I find
Livin' a life that I can't leave behind
There's no sense in telling me
The wisdom of the fool won't set you free
But that's the way that it goes and it's what nobody knows
Well, every day my confusion grows
———
Now, let's analyse these lyrics with Will's pov...
Every time I think of you = Mike
I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue = the color of Mike. Every single time he thinks about Mike, it feels like being shot, maybe in the heart.
It's no problem of mine, but it's a problem I find = meaning that for him, it isn't a problem of liking Mike, but it's a problem overall for society or for everyone else (their friends, families...)
Livin' a life that I can't leave behind = he can't forget Mike so he lives the life he's currently living because he can't leave it behind, leave Mike behind. He's too attached to him, to leave him.
There's no sense in telling me
The wisdom of the fool won't set you free = Will is known as the wise one of the group, and also the fool (= doesn't like girls, is childish, is gay). Meaning that his own wisdom won't set Mike free (probably of the fake person he's being, the fake relationship he has with El).
But that's the way that it goes and it's what nobody knows = It's the way things are, Will likes him but Mike is trying to act straight and nobody knows that, nobody knows they're struggling.
Well, every day my confusion grows = this sentence can feel like a response to what Will has "said" before. He says all those things, and Mike answers this. His confusion of liking Will grows every day. He feels confused if he actually likes El or not and if not, if he likes Will.
———
So with this first verse, things are set that Will loves Mike but he's too detached from that, too confused about who he loves and what he should do. Now, let's see the chorus:
CHORUS
Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I'm waiting for that final moment
You say the words that I can't say
———
It seems like the chorus can be perceived as Mike's pov. Let's see how the analysis works out here:
Every time I see you falling = every time Will is on the bottom, like with his feelings, when he feels at the bottom (= sad).
I get down on my knees and pray = can be a reference to the fact that Mike's family are conservatives, and religious. Although we've never seen them pray or anything, they're the cliché of the suburban family with a big house, and this cliché involves being Christian.
I'm waiting for that final moment = the ending of the show?
You say the words that I can't say = the most obvious of them all: we know Mike is unable to say I love you to El, so he's waiting that final moment where Will is going to say I love you to him, because it seems like he's incapable to do it himself. Which means that Mike won't be the one to say I love you first.
———
So this chorus was centered on Mike's feelings and current situation. Now, the second verse.
SECOND VERSE:
I feel fine and I feel good
I'm feeling like I never should
Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say
Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday?
I'm not sure what this could mean
I don't think you're what you seem
I do admit to myself that if I hurt someone else
Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be
———
This is so Byler coded, and it is again, Mike's pov. So here's my analysis:
I feel fine and I feel good
I'm feeling like I never should = not okay to be feeling that way, this good.
Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say = this can have 2 meanings. Either it is about how he's feeling good when he's next to Will and he doesn't even know what to talk about or say because he's flustered. Or, he says he's feeling "good" and he shouldn't be when he's with Eleven, and whenever he gets this way, with El, he doesn't know what to say because he doesn't like her that way.
Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday? = About Will: why can't they be friends like before, like what changed? About El: why can't they be strangers/friends like before, why did they have to be together that way? Why did he push himself to in the first place.
I'm not sure what this could mean = About Will: the feelings he has, he's not sure what they are about (= his love feelings towards Will). About El: he's not sure of why he's feeling uncomfortable when he's with her (= platonic feelings towards El).
I don't think you're what you seem = I'm not sure if this could be said by Will or El. It can be, again like some sort of answer, response to what's previously said. So I think it could be El or Will saying to "you" (= Mike) that he's not acting like his usual self, he's different, faking to be perceived as normal (= regarding El, acting straight).
I do admit to myself that if I hurt someone else = back to Mike. Again this can have 2 meanings. For El: admitting that if he hurts her, by using her as a beard. For Will: hurting him by ignoring his feelings, letting him on the side and only concentrating on Eleven, hurting his feelings (platonic like romantic).
Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be = for El: what they're meant to be, so friends. Meaning if he hurts her by not admitting that he doesn't like her, he'll never see her and him as friends. For Will: what they're meant to be is boyfriends. Meaning if he hurts him by not admitting his feelings and ignoring him, he'll never see each other as lovers.
———
We can clearly see how this verse applies to Mike, as how he's confused and trapped between dating a girl he doesn't like and wanting a boy he likes. But it is the 80s, he's scared of what others would think, especially himself. Because of this internalized homophobia he has.
The rest of the song is the chorus repeated four times.
Overall, this song is exactly what Mike feels about Will and about Eleven, about this Bizarre Love Triangle.
If you have other interpretation for that song, please feel free to give it. This was mine, and you may not be agreeing with it entirely, so if you have a different opinion, I'd be glad to read it.

Note
(same anon that previously sent an ask about the monologue, because writing all this just got me thinking)
Another thing to take note of is that Mike only talks in the past/present tense, but never in the future tense. He says "I've loved you every day since" but never "and I'm going to love you every day for the rest of my life". He's clinging to the past, he's refusing change. There's a line after where he says "And I’m not ready to lose you -- you hear me??". It's just so clear to me. Once he's ready, he can finally grow and allow new and better things to come into his life, and truly come of age. That's the kind of ending I believe is right for the show and those characters in a more general sense anyway.
OMG IVE NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE PAST/PRESENT TENSE STUFF THATS SO TRUE
i've always thought that it seemed like both mike and el were clinging to the past. it starts in the s3 epilogue when el says i love you too. its supposed to be taking the next big step in their relationship, maturing and changing. but mike realizes he doesn't want that, he doesn't want things to change. he doesn't want to get more serious with el. he yearns for the past when he was closer with will and didn't have the pressure of growing up and committing to el. and of course the idea of that scares him bc it makes him question the nature of he and will's relationship.
"And I guess...if I'm being really honest...I don't want things to change. So I think maybe that's why I came in here. To try to maybe...stop that change. To turn back the clock. To make things go back to how they were."
i've analyzed the living hell out of this in a byler way, because it is undoubtedly coded towards byler, but i think there is a bit of mileven here too based on what happens in s4. here's some quotes/moments that made me think mike and el were clinging to the past because they know they have no foundation of a future.
"Bitchin' right?" "Yeah, yeah, bitchin'. Do you come here a lot?" mike is so dismissive of her here it's kind of funny
then there's mike bringing her eggos before their fight. he's trying to make peace with a staple from their past, but it doesn't work, because that's not what makes a relationship strong.
"You can't let those mouth breathers ruin you, ruin us." again a reference to a joke/phrase from their past. something they share, or should share. mike feels like saying that will draw them back together. but it fails
"They're nobodies. And you're a superhero." "Not anymore." i feel like this one speaks for itself lol
and the fact that the song playing over their fight is called "Eulogy", a track that plays during scenes referencing dead characters (barb, bob, el (before mike knew she was alive), billy) and metaphorical deaths, like el moving into the cabin with hopper. "This is your new home." it's representing the death of el's old life in the lab, and finding new beginnings. their fight was the death of their relationship, and even mike knows it. a fight you can't come back from.

tw; rant. Once again here to remind everyone that byler not being endgame is, at best, negligent queerbaiting
this is the show where one of the producers said "the UD mythos is important but the heart of the show are its characters and their interconnectedness/family dynamics" or something along those lines AND also said that "very few things are coincidences in this show."
i'd have been ( and i bet a lot of other bylers too ) COMPLETELY FINE without byler even being a possible card on the table. i'd HAVE STILL BEEN A FAN OF THE SHOW without byler! in fact, i WAS--i cared more about el and hopper's rs than i did mike and will's. it wasn't until S4 that i REALLY got invested in the show bc of the promise of will's arc, WHICH INCLUDES MIKE. the way they handled the painting arc, if byler isn't endgame, is literally the most underwhelming thing i've seen.
the only difference that byler makes in my case is that if it hadn't come across as a real possibility, then i would've remained a casual viewer and not think about the show again until it came out, like yknow, most people. so this whole "will they won't they" thing going on makes it feel like a marketing technique to keep people who enjoy byler hooked at the promise of something significant developing there.
this isn't about "oh your ship didn't become canon? tough luck" it's legit that they would ruin their show for me FOR. NO. REASONNNNNN. I WAS ALREADY A FAN!!! I HAD NO BYLER EXPECTATIONS!!! not to mention how shitty it is on the lgbt community. and also, the mass hate bylers would get.
and before you say "its ur own fault for being delusional, they didn't queerbait--" I'm sorry but what Noah is doing IS QUEERBAIT even if he doesn't mean to and the duffers should tell him to stop hinting at byler until post s5 or whatever
im not even going to talk about the show IMPLYING BYLER for ages. for example; dustin telling lucas that he saw him and max holding hands and that meant there were feelings between them even if lucas denied it/said she was just scared vs mike holding will's hand AN EPISODE PRIOR
or the song "on the bus" playing during a lumax scene where they connected vs it playing on a byler scene in s4 using very similar phrasing it's like they're subtly winking at the audience.
the shitty way that mileven finally got their 'i love you' like im sorry it feels so rushed and awkward if this was supposed to be the culmination of mike's arc
i could literally go on and on and on and other bylers could as well so yeah. ugh im sorry for the negativity in the tag but i just REALLY need that to be very clear that byler vs mileven isn't an argument that is ocurring on equal ground and that byler isn't 'just a ship that people analyze too much'
if it was never going to be canon, THERE WAS NO NEED TO HINT AT IT **AT ALL** and THAT is what really grinds my gears. most bylers would still love ST bc our favorite character is WILL. we would've been fine if will's whole thing was telling his best friend he was gay and that's it. like, the bar is on the FLOOR ... me personally? i'll be satisfied with will getting a completed arc in the supernatural and having his moment to shine and bringing the story full circle like WE WERE PROMISED ( unless yknow, people want to call us stupid and delusional for expecting will to be important at all )
what i will NOT tolerate is people being mean to bylers for being upset about byler not being endgame in the end bc WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BE. and if you're one of those people sincerely: FUCK YOU. i wish you get exactly what you deserve. thank you for reading and that's it from me
