I'm forcing myself to at least TRY to draw real backgrounds, but sadly, I didn't really listen to the teacher when I was supposed to learn about drawing perspective in environments and now I have to pay for that.

I cba to make the meme but every episode of Utena during the Black Rose arc when they’re like “we have no choice but to revolutionize the world” it makes me wanna make a meme of the old guy going “guess I’ll die” but instead he says “guess I’ll revolutionize the world”

Cars and the Adolescence of Utena
(Spoilers for the Utena movie)
.
.
.
.
.
.

.

.
.
.
So there's this bit in the Revolutionary Girl Utena movie where the lead character turns into a car.  This is a thing that happens and the director is infamous for refusing to explain it beyond "I wanted to turn a girl into a car," but honestly every time I think about it it becomes less and less strange to me.  Or at the very least it makes more sense, which is LIKE the same thing?
The movie's big theme is adolescence, and a lot of what goes on is sort of a weird reflection of what adulthood looks like when you're not quite there yet.  In this light the use of cars as an ongoing metaphor is simple: when you're a teenager, cars symbolize freedom, the ability to go where you want.  You don't have to be stuck in the same place.  You can _get away_.
And so Utena becoming a car means that she and Anthy have the ability to leave, and Shiori's gloriously silly admonition that she's not the only one who can do it is, well, a reminder that this freedom isn't unique.
(You could also make some commentary about Utena rusting away being a remark on her feeling stuck and needing Anthy's help to realize her potential, that it's only between the two of them that they find a way out from the place that life has taken them so far: I like this understanding because it emphasizes the idea that if anyone's saving anyone they're both saving each other, which is how I view their relationship.)

I'm putting a jump because it's long and I have Things to Say.
"I think it's also because most people think that you can't use what you learn in literary class and that they are useless."
I wonder if they had much education in the matter to begin with, and that's not a dunk, but from my experience it's pretty easy to tell most of the time. I'm obviously biased the other way around since I live for that crap. I studied literature in high school. I am a fricking translator. I count Toni Morrison and Murakami among my favorite authors. I live for overanalysing media.
But I'm a firm believer of "everything has something to tell". Yes even the "objectively" worst piece of media you can think of. And I don't think discussing about "quality" should even be a thing when you're trying to analyse media in a way that's actually, you know, interesting.
And the truth is, they aren't incapable of this "level" of analysis, because no one is incapable of it. I think they're just utterly uninterested in talking about it because they don't like the source material, and therefore it has to be absolutely devoided of any quality whatsoever and more importantly, of any depth. In their head recognising depth means recognising it's good (it does not, and IT DOES NOT MATTER).
They can't dissociate their opinion/taste from what the media has to tell, because they see everything through what I'll call a "cinemasin lense". It's like counting points, and if the result is below a certain threshold, the media is shit. It's also a comfortable position because it allows you to say: I'm objectively correct. You wouldn't want not to be.
So as a consequence there's a lot of bad faith going on. Basically: if I like it, yes it's that deep. If I don't, it's 100% crap.
It's the same with suspension of disbelief. Literally every game in existence needs some. If not, it wouldn't work as a goddamn game. Yet to this day I still see non ironic (speaking of XBC2) "if Morag is the best Driver of Mor Ardain, why is she only level 10? I'm very intelligent." Of course that example is super extreme, but 1. I saw it so much it's actually distressing, 2. it's very representative of the attitude as a whole.
Man, another extreme example, but imagine looking at something like Shoujou Kakumei Utena the way they nitpick children media. That's the sort of batshit insane impression this situation leaves on me. Ironically it loops back to being a very, very stupid way to interact with media because it's so superficial, it misses the entire point. And it's also guaranteed to make you mad at everything in existence, more or less.
Like, I'll be the first to say fans read too much into things, but IT'S FUN.
What is there even to "discuss" about "how come sometimes when you kill an enemy they lose their ring and sometimes they don't???". Genuinely, who the fuck cares??? It's just for gameplay shenanigans??? I'd understand if they were selling you a political drama and the story ended up the way GoT did, but come on. You can't tell me that's in good faith. Just roll your eyes and move on. I know I did.
Ok so I just wanted to say this : I got some people telling me that I was arguing semantics when debunking the vid. And that worries me cause in media analysis, you ARE supposed to play semantics...
Which actually made me realize that most of the video essays on ytb analyzing supports or dialogue never really questionned why a character speaks in a certain way and how it conveys their personality, what does it shows about said character and the overall effect.
While there is not one way to analyze a media, in general the literacy ask you to try to ask yourself what something represent symbolically and that can comes through the use of words. Which is why I insist on using the jpn version for Engage. Each language has its own rules, system and own semantics with all the subtlelty and nuance possible. This is what makes translation so hard, the fact that you have to choose the right words to properly render the nuance of the original sentence without adding or removing in meaning. Even then, you can't rely on translation one hundred percent to study the writing of a media. Words are tools, and they create effects by creating meaning. That's why studying semantics is important and checking the original text is.
In japanese there is several words with different nuance that English can't take into account. You can say "I" by either using watashi, boku, ore, atashi, washi, ware/waga/ga, jibun etc. And all of those have slight different nuance due to the practice linked to those words, the context in which they are usually refered to and so on and so on. Each information transmitted by the text is important, the wording and how it is said, all of this are another way of showing something.
And also, taking into account the subtext behind a character's silence.
Take chapter 2 for example, in chapter 2, when Lumera told Alear she hoped they would view her as a mother like they used to 1 000 years ago, Alear remained silent and made a rather sad face, showing their uneasyness. This silent is playing into the many instance of foreshadowing in Engage, where Alear's lack of familiarity towards Lumera is apparent. Their awkward reaction comes from the fact that Lythos Castle and Lumera don't ring a bell and when you know the truth behind all of this, it all makes sense that Alear would not feel familiar with that place.
Yes I play with semantics, but playing with semantics is essential in an analysis. I know the meme of the "curtain are blue means nothing deep" made a lot of damage, but every choice matters. The "curtains are blue" means something : either it is linked to the mood of whoever choose the curtains, either it is a choice made by the author to create "un effet de réel" to quote Barthes, an element that might play later on, existing for aesthetic reason to create a sonority like Flaubert used to.
If you never try to look into a sentence, you won't obtain a deeper analysis and will only stay on a surface level.

Hey!! I was wondering if you can give some links or instructions on how to download and run the Utena game, I was planning on playing it before winter break ends but I can’t seem to find any links that are still working or any files that are still open :/ anyways, hope ur having a good day!
I was able to find an accessible link here.  All the instructions for setup and translation are included on the page.  It’s the same page I had gotten the game from when I downloaded it, so at the very least, it worked about a year ago. Everything seems to still be working, so I hope that you’ll be able to get the game up and running.
If the link ends up not working for whatever reason, you can always head to the In The Rose Garden homepage, click the “Shoujou Kakumei Utena” forum, then scroll down and select the “English Translation of Utena Game (Itsuka Kakumei Sareru Monogatari)” discussion.

Tengen Toppa Gurren  Lagaan
Shugo Chara (Probably not a great show, but it means so much to me its hard for me to not include it)

Just saw this on Youtube, figured I’d share this here.
I love the idea of doing it in the same fairytale style that opens the show, with the same question if it was a good idea for Anthy to do what she did.
Which given what Dios became, it’s not a bad question to ask.
