I wanted to talk about something real quick.

In 2021 I was booked in to the hairdressers for the first time as an emergency by my sister because even she was like "Hal, you need a hair cut."

It was only when my mum said I could have what hairstyle I wanted and I chose to go part head-shaved for the first time, did my brain truly really know what euphoria was - I was so happy

But it was also terrified me. Because as I made my way home alone, in the back of a taxi/uber , my brain legitimately started asking me a very weird question it had never thought of before this point: What if you're trans?

I pushed the feeling aside, thinking it was me being silly. But over the past couple of years since then, those thoughts have started to come more frequent -

I've come off all of the meds that I needed to, to officially fully recover from my psychosis episode from 2018 from a reaction to sertraline and anxiety spiralled and so on. I'm on the meds I was on before I got bad.

On Tuesday 12th February, my psychiatrist discharged me from her services because she said there's nothing she could do for me- I was happy, I had no problems and we talked about my feelings about who i think I am. You know what she said to me? Because of how much progress I've made, to the point where I can now control my anxiety and push it back so its not even a bother at all, she thinks my brain is starting to explore things it couldn't when I was younger - things I could have known about myself earlier, but I never had the chance.

She wanted me to be happy. She told me it was alright to feel this way. People have been so accepting and I'm so grateful. And there is hope.

I still get that good feeling from a hair cut even now, I love my hair super short and shaved and right now, I feel like I'm nonbinary. But I also have the feeling to start shopping in the men's clothes.

I'm 27 and learning things about myself I didn't realise. I'm still questioning things, I'm still learning.

I'm me. I always have been. And the future is looking oh so bright

THE ROARING 20'S

The 1920's were a decade of luxury and indulgence for many; however, there was a lot more to it than just wall street and flapper dresses.

FASHION OF THE 20'S 

Fashion in the 20's consisted of a lot of things. The main fashion statement of the 20's was the liberation of the corset, a very different thing from the past hundreds of years. As women were now starting to gain more rights thanks to the suffrage movement, many women did not want to be limited by the rigid corsetry of the Victorian era. 

Following the movement of more fredom of clothes in the 1920s, the sillouhette generally moved away from the hourglass steriotypical. Up until this point in history, many people now prefer a dropped wait line due to its versatility to different body shapes as it made everyone look great, as well as a shorter hem. This also allowed much more freedom for movement as women found they could now dance more freely as well as play many more sports. however just because these dresses were simple it does not mean they wasn't beautiful many techniques were used to create different effects which look absolutely gorgeous

Headware and hair also changed dramatically in the 1920s. Many people opted to wear hats such as chloche hats and bobbed hairstyles. This, I believe, came mostly from the insporation of La Garconne, the bachelorette, who went against almost all society standards of the previous era, getting pregnant out of wedlock, cutting her hair short, and wearing stereotypically manly clothes.

SUFFERAGETTES

The suffering movement started in 1840 and ended in 1920, but it really picked up the pace in the early 1900s. The suffrage movement was a movement by women for women focusing on gaining more rights, in particular the right to vote. 

A lot of traction for the women's rights movement came from WWI. This was because many women didn't have roles in the workplace, such as factories, etc., so when all the men were away at work, the women were needed to help run things back home while the men were at home. So when the war came to an end, many women decided that they didn't want to go back to their old lives where they depended on their husbands and, in fact, wanted to build a life for themselves and gain independence. 

One of the most famous suffrage protests was at the 1913 Epsom Derby. On this day, while the horses were racing, Emily Davison threw herself in front of King George's horse, Ammer. It is unclear whether Emily intended for the horse to hit her or for the horse to stop in another part of gaining attention for the rights, but either way, this was a tragic day and made many more people fight for women's rights, and women took a lot more seriously due to the public seeing the places they are willing to go to to get their rights.

1. lack of representation of Black Women in Hollywood, Media, Art Community, Gaming Communities. (or just ignorance in general.)

 *It’s off topic about art but...it’s still historial and informative. Take a Look at Beyonce, She was the first black woman to ever perform in 2018, We are very much behind when it comes to equality in anything really.*

 White Washing is a problem because of lack their of Black Female Characters in the art community/Anime/Comic/Cartoon Industry. There is many versions of the same (pale)(Light) skin toned, of every character imaginable, and never really any dark-skinned obviously very VERY much BLACK characters.

 Black Washing: People wanting to see their favorite characters if they were from another nationality, African, Haitian, etc. What would they look like? Darker yes but with fuller lips? Pointer cheeks? who knows? it's u to the artist. 

 Reason for this: Lack of Equality, Education, Respect, Motivation, and acknowledgment. The Lack of people imagining how or knowing how Black women look, act, speak, talk (other than Ghetto or Angry). 

When they make a black woman, it's always, stereotypical or wishy-washy simpled down, Afro or Straight hair. 

It's out of frustration of not seeing ourselves, the fact that many people choose not to acknowledge it on purpose, is the reason they changed the tones of many other characters. 

We Yearn to see ourselves, especially in Romance Visual Novels.

By saying they can't see or understand the problem, even with intensive research, an explanation from said Black Women, Girls, etc. 

 What's even sadder is our counterparts, Black Men Have all of the love and attention, but are draw overly Sexual Bodies(and Angry/ Overly Hyper Stereoscopic Gangster Persona); most of the time.

 Lately, it's been dying down, since we have characters like EKKO in League of Legends and Lucian, Rock Lock, and Not as mainstream anime Michiko to Hatchin's Satoshi Batista and even Light Skinned Black men are getting in on the attention. (Note:  Rock Lock Is Definitely Afro-Japanese, His name is Ken Takagi (My Hero Academia))

We rarely see ourselves to the point we don't even know how to start, drawing ourselves once we do learn to draw, especially me.

I know how to draw straight hair, but not natural African/Black curly hairstyles, at all. I'm just as tired of seeing black women not portrayed in anime, don't even get me started on the lack of Muslim representation- or even Eastern Indian, and Natives being drawn and portrayed Stereotypical; *sigh*. 

Also miss me with the bullshit about how Japan is Japanese and all Characters are Japanese when I’m sure There is Foreigners who live in JAPAN and they exist, as well as  in Anime too, especially the White girls with BLONDE HAIR and BLUE EYES.

I’m also very happy to see more Black characters being portrayed, with natural looks, not overly exaggerated characters of racist depictions of us.

Sorry I ranted On I needed to blow off steam with the countless racist white people (in the anime community) who’ve told me that “force diversity is shit.” or “You complain to much.” or “Then you draw it.” like we arealy don’t and it’s rejected for funding because it’s not enough white people in our art, or it’s too black.

You wake up to a gentle tapping on your arm and the smell of home cooked food wafting around the cabin. You sit up with a yawn, lifting yourself off the man who rescued you and freeing his legs. Looking down to your bandaged leg you can tell the nap (and the pain meds) really helped numb the area, at least until you’d have to move. The man – Jotaro, his name’s Jotaro- looks down at you from where he’s standing, blue-green eyes lingering on your wounded leg as well before he offers a hand to help you up.

You can’t help the slight whine of pain that slips from your mouth, but quickly rally yourself and shift your weight to your good leg. You refuse to let go of Jotaro’s arm; you know you won’t make it far without leaning on him. He seems to be a man of few words but Jotaro understands exactly what’s going on and holds his arm firm and steady as you grip it with both hands and hobble forward to the other room where the meal has been set out.

You make it to the dining room with his help and freeze when you realize how many men are here in the house. You make an effort to straighten up and lean less on Jotaro as you both make it to the empty seats. You realize no one’s started in on the food yet as Jotaro starts heap food onto his plate. They were waiting for him to start- oh god, he’s the alpha, isn’t he? Good thing you seem to be on his good side already. Less risk of being forced out of the pack’s territory and into the path of more hunters if you had Jotaro on your side.

The redhead at the table seems ready to burst with questions, you can tell he’s doing his very best to be polite about it at least, not like the guy with the silver mohawk. Your explanation and apology seem to set everyone on edge, but they’re not throwing out accusations at you, so it must be the fact that there were wolf hunters in their territory.

It’s quiet for a minute until the older man- Joseph- regales you all with a story from his youth, how he once… crashed a plane while battling a god?

By the end of dinner, you are full of delicious food and exhausted. Just sitting upright for an hour has taken a toll and you’re pretty sure the pain killers are wearing off. Your leg throbs as you shift a bit to get the blood flowing. The rest of the guys clear out of the dining room, bringing plates and leftovers to the kitchen. Jotaro stands and offers you a hand to stand up.

“Thanks.” You wince at how out of breath you sound and sigh as you take his hand.

He looks like he’s thinking hard about something before instead of pulling you to your feet he bends down and puts your arm around his neck. “What? Wait! I can walk, I’m fine!” You’re flustered to be back in his arms as he ignores you and lifts you from your chair.

“Its fine. You’re tired, and there’s no sense straining yourself just to walk down the hall.” You let out a little huff at his logic and can’t help the soft purr that builds in your chest and you accept your fate. He purrs back in response and you melt further into his hold.

He carries you out of the dining room, but you must be more tired than you realized because when you blink and open your eyes again you’re suddenly in a hallway. Jotaro has stopped in front of one of the doors, another very serious look on his face as he thinks. You hum a little to catch his attention, and it works as those aqua eyes snap to meet your gaze.

He sighs and averts his eyes, “We… don’t have a guest room here. You’ll have to get settled in my room. I’ll sleep in the lounge.”

“Oh! No, you don’t have to… I can sleep in the lounge! I don’t want to be an inconvenience.”

“No, you need proper rest. And a room with a door. You don’t know how loud the old man and Polnareff can be yet.” He wears a small smile as he opens the door and makes his way inside, setting you on the queen bed. Besides the bed there is only a cheap night stand in the room. They must have just been here for a guy’s trip or something, the space doesn’t feel very lived in.

He turns and rummages through a travel bag while you survey the room and turns around holding a bundle of clothes. “You can wear some of my PJs. Do you need help getting to the bathroom?” he nods over to the other door in the room that apparently is not a closet like you had thought.

“Thanks. Just to the door is fine. The hardest part is getting up again, I think I can put a little weight on it right now.” You nod as he reaches and helps you to your feet again. You are able to hobble to the bathroom with his help and he sets the bundle of clothes on the sink counter.

He lets go of you and rummages in a linen closet for a minute, turning back to you with a slightly dusty and mis-matched washcloth and hand towel. “Sorry, this is all that I have here, I’ll go see if the other bathrooms have a real towel or something.”

“It’s fine, this will do. I’ll just get the worst of it off right now.” You pause for a moment, trying to think of a way to word your next question. “You, uh. You guys haven’t been here that long, have you? Were you guys on a hunting trip or something? Guys weekend?”

Jotaro hums to himself, “Something like that. We were actually scouting it to expand our territory. This was our test run to see if we liked it enough to stay. But you’re right, we’ve only been here a few days now.”

“Ahh. Wow,” your eyes widen as you realize, “I must have used up all my good karma or something to run right into your new territory. What are the odds…” You trail off as you realize how badly today could have gone for you. You’re shaken from your worried thoughts by Jotaro’s hand on your shoulder.

“Hey. You’re safe now. You can stick with us as long as you need.” You smile and nod at him. “I’ll let you get cleaned up. I’ll be just down the hall if you need me.”

He turns to leave but something possesses you take hold of his hand before he can make it out the doorway. “I… Don’t want to be alone, tonight I mean… You don’t have to sleep in the lounge if you don’t want to, the bed looked big enough…” Oh jeez, you can feel how hot your face is from the blood rushing to it. You’re sure if you turned to the mirror instead of looking at your feet you’d see a previously undiscovered shade of red.

“Alright, if you’re sure.” He… agreed? You can’t help but smile as you look back up to his face, embarrassment forgotten. He’s smiling a little too and you have a feeling this is normally a rare sight. He heads for the door again, “I’ll get some more pillows while you get changed then.”

You shut the door behind him and turn to the bundle he left for you. T-shit and sweatpants. Good thing they were the kind with a drawstring, you had a feeling they were going to need rolled up at the ankle and the waist with how tall Jotaro is. You turn to your reflection for the first time tonight and are surprised with how pale you are, probably still anemic from your earlier injury.

You do your best to clean up the leftover dirt and smudges of blood and run your fingers through your hair as well as you can- a quick search of the bathroom had yielded no comb. You quickly don the sleep clothes and roll up the pants so you don’t trip on your short journey to the bed. You exit the bathroom and hobble your way to the bed, hand on the wall to support yourself. Jotaro comes back into the room holding two more pillows and a blanket he’s found. He must have changed as well, but you have to admit he fills out the simple clothes well.

You both settle into bed side by side. He’s opted to be a gentleman and keep a layer of sheets between you and let you have the thicker blanket all to yourself. You’re still tense, sharing a bed with a virtual stranger, but then you take a deep breath and all you can smell is him. Instantly you are calmed, enough that you unintentionally start purring again. What is up with your instincts today? You’ve never given into them so easy, were you still on edge from the chase earlier? That must be it.  The close call must still be on your subconscious mind, you’ve never been that close to…

Your thoughts are derailed again as he purrs in response to your distress, but the fear and stress you’d felt in the forest still lingers in your mind. You wish you could relax like you had been for your nap earlier. Maybe a little bit of embarrassment now would be worth a good night’s rest?

“Ok, so this may be a dumb question, but,” you pause and inhale to build your courage, “can I… just… hold your hand? So I know you’re there? That it’s you?”

He shifts around a bit and you hear a muffled ‘Good grief’ as he turns his head to you.

You look away to try and avoid the awkwardness as best you can, “Fine, just thought I’d ask. I knew it was dumb.”

“Hmm. That wasn’t a no.” He pulls his hand free of the blankets and holds it out next to you. You marvel a bit at how large his hand is compared to yours as you grasp it. You feel almost tingly as you both settle down to sleep again. This time your thoughts anchored to the present, not the terrifying chase through the forest.

Dick Grayson – 80 years of hairstyles

Welcome to my ongoing TED talk about Dick Grayson. This week I’ll be talking about hairstyles. Just because fashion in hairstyles is kind of fun. 

The general hairstyle during the 1940s was short on the sides and back, longer on the top. One common variant was to have the top hair section parted on one side and combed over and slightly back to create a wave. (Wavy hair was in fashion in the 1940s.)

Dick did start with hair like that; longer on top and short side and back. In the very first panels, the top hair falls over his forehead. But he has been adventurous enogh to try out different fashions over the years to come.

As Robin. Top hair combed back, curls over the forehead. 

When he becomes Robin, the top hair is combed back; a cowlick makes part of the front hair fall in two curls over his forehead.

Silver Age/New Look. Parted on the side. 

His hairstyle will look the same for more than two decades. With the Silver age/New Look in Batman (1964), Dick’s hair is more likely to be visibly parted on the side, and sometimes a curl will fall down over the forehead.

Longer fringe.

At some time in the very late 60s/early 70s, Dick grows a longer fringe that falls over the forehead (isn’t it a bit like the style popularized by The Beatles, you think?). This style will pretty much stay with him in the 70s, 80s and into the 90s.

Long hair (mid-90s).

A few years in the 90s, Dick has long hair. Sometimes it was drawn as a mullet (short on front and sides, long at the back), sometimes just long all over; the artists don’t seem to be able to agree. It was Mirage, posing as Kory/Starfire, who cut his hair to this look, over Dick’s mild protest, in New Titans vol 1 # 88 (July 1992). 

At times, Dick would have his long hair in a ponytial; funny enough, his hair was always much longer when he had it in a ponytail than when it was loose. It was that way he lost his long hair, in a fight in Nightwing vol 2 # 1 (October, 1996) when a thug cut off the ponytail.

Edit. Brian Stelfreeze, who designed the “fingerstrip look for Dick, wrote in the model sheet: "The "whip" is not all hair but keeps the look streamlined. It also changes Dick's appearance."

Curtains hairstyle/fringe and some variations (1996 to 2018). 

After that, Dick went for what I think should be classified as the 90s curtains hairstyle, where the top hair is grown into a fringe that often falls over his forehead or even his eyes, and the hair is parted in the middle. It’s a lot like his original Robin hairstyle, to be honest, but his hair is often a bit longer on the sides than when he was a little Robin.

The following decades, he would mostly often stick to the curtain style, though sometimes the hair is parted on the side and he will look more like he did in the 80s. And in the Grayson comic book, the top hair was combed back, but often a few strands would fall forward.

Dick as a blonde – more likely than you think

Dick was supposed to be a blonde with a new secret identity, post his death in Forever Evil. Batman Eternal artist Jason Fabok made a Thanksgiving picture with a blonde Dick included (sitting behind Batman). 

However, plans change, and Dick kept his hair black in Grayson. According to the writer James Tynion IV on Twitter, “it mostly got dialed down to him removing a blonde wig on a case in the opening pages of Grayson #1″.

Recently shot in the head; buzz cut. 

... And then came that unfortunate event when Dick was shot in the head on September 2019 (which had everyting to do with the story in the Batman title and nothing to do with telling good Nightwing stories). He came out of that with a buzz cut, short all over. Since then, his hairdo has gone through a few variations on short hair, including longer on the top but shaved on the sides. Incidentally, the shaved sides hairstyle for men was in vogue in 2019, so Dick continues to keep up with the fashion trends.

Still, I’m sure we’re all waiting for Dick to become the one and only Nightwing again, and let the hair grow a bit. And actually, we have had several stories where Dick is and looks like his normal self, while the amnesiac story drags out in the current Nightwing and other Bat-titles.

Ideas for the Main Character and ‘Ethical Issues’

When coming up with ideas for the main character’s design, I began just by doodling whatever came to mind- sometimes trying to emulate Nick Cross’s style. However, I then remembered watching the short ‘Hair Love’ recently and how endearing the main character’s design was in that film, so I tried drawing a character using one of the hairstyles.

I found that I really liked the design and thought it could be fun changing her hairstyle in each stage of her life, maybe getting progressively more intricate and creative the more she learns to embrace her fascination for art and animation. So, I presented it to the rest of my group and it was received quite well.

However, Tiago brought up that they were concerned whether or not it would be ‘appropriate’ for our main character to be black, alluding to the fact that our group is predominantly white.

And this really surprised me. Whilst I understand that when creating characters who have a different culture or ethnicity to yourself, you won’t be able to share the same personal experience. But this is true of almost any character you create. Following this logic, am I limited only to creating white, female characters?

If this were a film specifically about black culture or what it means to be black then I would agree that that is not our film to make. But this is simply about a person who loves and is fascinated by animation. And I see no reason why that person can’t be black.

On another note, poc are severely underrepresented in TV animation as is, especially women. To quote Cree Summer (a voice actress who voices multiple black animated characters) from this 2018 interview:

‘I do the voices of all the brown girls... There still ain’t that many. Because there is this really crazy belief that black girls don’t watch cartoons, and that we don’t collect comics, and that we don’t like sci-fi, and that’s BS man. We love it’.

(Cree, paraphrasing her fans) “You don’t know what it meant to me to see myself in a cartoon, I got one little black girl that I get to see that looks like me. Thank you so much”

Tyler the Creator raises a similar argument in this 2017 conference:

Furthermore, I also recently watched this video analysis by ToonrificTariq of black characters in animation, and though it’s quite informally written and its sources often aren’t fully cited, it raises some valid points (and includes the above clips). 

‘there is no one black experience’ and ‘not every character with brown skin needs to be a political statement’. 

However, he also raises the point (at 13:00 in the video) that in the birth of animation, film & media, the way black people were portrayed was dictated by predominantly white people, and more often than not with harmful stereotypical caricatures. Only recently have we been able to move away from these depictions, even I remember watching Tom & Jerry cartoons growing up and seeing Jerry with a shoe-polish blackened face and big red lips. So it is imperative that black characters be portrayed respectfully and that we listen to a range of opinions from people of colour- to do our research.

A successful example of this would be Craig of the Creek, an animated series that began airing in 2018. It was created by Matt Burnett and Ben Levin, two white men. The series revolves around Craig, an African American boy growing up in the suburbs. With the series’ Emmy nomination, Common Sense Media award, and upcoming spin-off series, it’s clear that the show is well-loved. And this is because Burnett and Levin hired a diverse group to work on the show and help to shape it:

“We worked hard to put together the team that would help shape the show, a very diverse group of voices to add something that we needed that we couldn’t do on our own,” Burnett says. “That was always our goal when we decided to create the show, to work with a huge range of people and get their voices heard on TV.”

“We saw first-hand [working on Steven Universe] how much representation mattered to people and how important it is for people to feel seen. And so when we had the opportunity to create a show, we wanted to make something fun that the kids would love but would also have a positive impact,” Levin says. “In animation, you’re creating the world from the ground up. So every character is a decision in its own way. So as we’ve gone through the show, we talk about ways that we can provide representation as we create characters.”

White creators can make successful, relatable black characters, if they listen to black voices and take on their ideas and concerns.

One of the main things that I take away from these videos, is that what is more important than simply including a black character, is portraying them as a character- giving them a personality, a story, a life. ‘There is no one black experience’ (ToonrificTariq). According to author Leye Adenle: ‘I believe that you can write any character as long as you have empathy.’

Fascination is a human experience, I have experienced it, anyone who has fallen in love with animation has experienced it. And with this idea at our film’s core, I think we can make a successful, relatable character, regardless of race.

What I draw from all of this is, whilst it is extremely important to be respectful of other cultures and ethnicities, and to do your research to avoid any stereotypical or insensitive pitfalls, being overly-cautious to the point of seeing it as ‘inappropriate’ to portray any race other than your own seems to be holding us back from creating actual, needed change. 

So, learning and moving forward from this. I’d like to continue developing my take on the main character as a British black girl. Whether or not this becomes the final design for the film is up to the rest of my group. But, nevertheless I am going to look at sources from predominantly black artists such as Allen Fatimaharan, Vashti Harrison and Matthew A. Cherry as inspiration for my take on the main character’s design. And in the future, if we do decide to go forward with this design, I’d like to present our work to a diverse range of people to gather their opinions and make sure we are doing our due diligence.
