Barboun
Tumblr media
We’ve been on a bit of a Middle Eastern kick lately and so we thought we’d keep it going by trying out Barboun in Shoreditch.  Pretty much directly across the road from Gloria (read what we thought about that here), Barboun is an eastern Mediterranean restaurant with a wood fire grill.
Tumblr media
We started the evening with smoked eel with carob molasses and split pea.  This was really tasty.  The eel was really tender and had an intense smokiness to it.  I really liked this.
Tumblr media
Next up was the dolma.  Clearly not the most photogenic of dishes but fairly tasty.  These were dumplings of sun dried aubergines stuffed with sour cherry, garlic yoghurt and bulgar wheat.  I thought it was a little underseasoned but apart from that, the flavour was good.
Tumblr media
As always, when bone marrow is on the menu, I order bone marrow.  This was topped with what seemed like bacon bits and some breadcrumbs which was a nice little touch.  The only thing about this was that they were pretty stingy with the bread.  No way was the 3 or 4 thin slices of sourdough enough for all that amazing bone marrow goodness.
Tumblr media
For our slightly larger plates, we got the beef short rib that came on this pitta like flatbread with a yoghurt and an iskender sauce.  The beef must’ve been cooked for a hell of a long time as that thing was soft!  You definitely didn’t need a knife for this.  The flatbread was really nice and the sauces complementing each other, the iskender a little spicy and the yoghurt calming things down.  The beef itself was a little bland though which was disappointing.
Tumblr media
The other large plate we ordered was the sea bass.  It came pan fried on a bed of fermented yoghurt and saffron cream.  The fish was cooked really well with a crispy skin and the saffron cream was subtle but yummy.  A pleasant enough dish but nothing too special.
Tumblr media
For dessert, we had a sesame fondant with hazelnut ice cream.  This was delicious.  The fondant oozed out hazelnut sauce when broken into and the coating of sesame seeds made the whole thing smell amazing.  The ice cream was also really good quality ice cream which is always nice to have.
Tumblr media
We also ordered a kunefe that came with kaymak (which is like a clotted cream) and pistachios.  This was delicious.  It wasn’t too sweet and underneath the deep fried pastry skin was stringy cheese.  What with the cheese, the pastry and the deep frying, this was a great dessert.  I’ve had kunefe a few times before but I think this is my favourite version so far!
Barboun is pretty good.  The eel was my favourite of the smaller plates we started with and while the larger plates were disappointing, dessert more than made up for it.

Linguine Vongole / Cecconi’s / Shoreditch, London ⠀ Noodles ★★★ Broth/Sauce ★★ Toppings ★★ ⠀ 🔎 Will you come again? ⠀ 😐 For drinks maybe. ⠀ Good for: Fancy date night out. The pasta was way too hard for me, (I like al dente but this is on the harder side!) could have done with a minute or two more. There were broken shells and sand in the clams, and overall the dish was too salty, plus greasy when the dish started cooling down. That said the staff has been very lovely and the decor of the restaurant is really nice, would come back for a drink, perhaps not the pasta. . . . . . #pasta #vongole #londonpasta #londonfood #londonfoodie #shoreditchfood — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2xlq67B

Blacklock Shoreditch
Tumblr media
A while ago now, we had a pretty amazing Sunday Lunch at the original Blacklock in Sunday (read about it here).  We really enjoyed it back then and have been meaning to go back and try their steaks.  It’s taken us a while but we have finally made it back.  Keep on reading to see what we thought!
Tumblr media
We started off with the pre chop bites.  These were three little bites on crackers with toppings including blue cheese, their in house made pickles, anchovies and eggs.  They got a little stronger in flavour with each one and were a great little appetiser.  The anchovy with the egg mayo mixture was probably my favourite of the three.
Tumblr media
After the pre-chop bites, it was the starters.  First was the pigs head on toast with gravy.  Wow, this was amazing!  The toast was crunchy, the gravy was think and unctuous with a deep meaty flavour.  The pork was full of flavour, a nice mix of lean and fatty meat and the pickled cucumbers and chillies sharp and balanced the dish perfectly.
Tumblr media
This was the lamb belly ribs with a bunch of slaw.  The slaw was fresh and crisp while the lamb belly ribs were tender, fall off the bone and just fatty enough.  These were really tasty but didn’t quite live up to the high of that pigs head on toast.
Tumblr media
We decided to share a 900g bone in rib eye cooked medium rare.  We had originally gone for a 750g steak but luckily, we came to our senses early enough to change our order and boy was that the right choice.  The beef came nice ad pink with a lovely charred crust.  This might not have been quite up there with the steaks at Hawksmoor or Goodman but it was pretty damn good!
Tumblr media
To go with our steaks, we went for a garlic marrow spread which wasn’t actually a spread like I expected, it was just a couple of chunks of bone with the marrow and garlic butter inside.  The only thing I can say about this is that I wish there had been more of it!  Garlicky, beefy and just melts in your mouth; so good.
Tumblr media
Special mention has to go to these beef dripping chips.  Often, beef dripping chips can be a bit soggy but these were super crispy as well as beefy.  I really enjoyed these and will be ordering these any time I go!
Tumblr media
For dessert, we had both the cheese cake and the bread and butter pudding.  The cheese cake was basically just a great biscuit base, a load of white chocolate and a whole load of cream!  Definitely not the lightest dessert but so good!  Not the prettiest but a lovely end to a great steak dinner.
Tumblr media
The bread and butter pudding was unfortunately a bit of a disappointment.  It was a little stodgy and a little bland.  It definitely needed a bit of cinnamon and maybe some nutmeg too.  There was also not enough raisins in it (the 2 in the photo were pretty much it).  It was possibly the only dud in this meal which was a shame but it wasn’t enough to put me off from coming back.  For dessert, stick to the cheese cake.
Blacklock Shoreditch is a great place to go for a super tasty steak.  It was a lot cheaper than some of the bigger name steak places like Hawksmoor and Goodman but it was still really good quality steak and the sides were pretty awesome too.

Smokestak
Tumblr media
Now that the summer is in full swing, it’s definitely bar-b-q season.  If you’re not one for doing it yourself, there are now a bunch of restaurants that do really good American style bar-b-q in London.  I’d heard that Smokestak in Shoreditch was one of them so headed down there to go check it out.
Tumblr media
To kick off the meal, we had this pitta bread with pesto and parmesan.  The pitta was super soft and fluffy and the pesto and cheese on top were really tasty.  A nice carby start to the meal!
Tumblr media
Lamb rib with parsley and shallots.  These were ok.  The skin was a little bit tough and there wasn’t a huge amount of meat on them.  The flavour was good though.
Tumblr media
Next up were pig tails.  These were amazing!  Super crispy with a sticky molasses sauce.  Under the crispy skin was a mix of gelatinous tendon along with chunks of meat; so good!
Tumblr media
These crispy ox cheek nuggets were also delicious!  The coating had these big flakes of crispiness and they were stuffed with beefy goodness.  Along with the pig tails, these were probably my favourite dishes.
Tumblr media
This was a pork belly rib with pickled cucumber.  The bar-b-q sauce on this was a little sweet but the pork was really well cooked and super tender.  The pickled cucumbers were also really zingy and did a god job balancing out the sweetness of the pork.
Tumblr media
This was a salad of charred greens, tahini, peanut and pomegranate.  I really liked this.  With a meal that has as much meat as this one, you need something to offset the richness and this did the trick and was pretty damn tasty too!
Tumblr media
The beef brisket.  If you come here with enough people, you can order a whole brisket or even just take it away for either a house party or just one hell of a dinner for one!  The brisket itself was pretty great.  It was juicy, smoky and tender.  It came with a slightly spicy sauce and some pickled chillies.  Not sure I’d be able to finish a whole brisket but you know, what; I wouldn’t mind giving it a go :)
Tumblr media
This was possibly my least favourite dish of the whole evening.  It was a daikon slaw with fish sauce.  It was just a bit flat; the daikon wasn’t really crunchy enough and it was just not very memorable.
Tumblr media
We also ordered a 30 day dry aged beef rib.  I had high hopes for this as I do love a good beef rib.  However, this was a little disappointing in that it was just a bit dry.  The flavour was good but it just wasn’t as pull-apart soft as I’d imagined.
Tumblr media
This dish was salt baked beetroot with big slabs of goats cheese on top.  This was really good!  The beetroot was nice and sweet and just look at that cheese!  There were also hazelnuts to give it a bit of crunch.  I really enjoyed this!
Tumblr media
Our last dish was a coal roasted aubergine with red miso and toasted cashew nuts.  Miso on aubergine is pretty much the Japanese dish Nasu Dengaku and this version was really good.  It was sticky and sweet; so soft and almost caramel-ly.  It was really rich but the cashews provided a really nice crunch; really good!
Tumblr media
Now onto dessert!  First up was poached rhubarb, custard and ginger crumble.  This was just like a really good rhubarb crumble.  The poached rhubard was quite sweet but really tasty and the custart and crumble were delicious.  Maybe more of a winter dessert but still, top notch!
Tumblr media
I love a good sticky toffee pudding and this was a good sticky toffee pudding!  The sponge was soft and surprisingly light but then it was smothered in this sweet toffee sauce; so good!
Overall, I quite liked Smokestak.  There were a few misses but the hits were big hits - I’m thinking the pig tails and ox cheek nuggets.  I’d definitely be up for going back but I’d change a couple of things in the order.  Still, if you’re looking for good BBQ, this place will do it!
