23 October 2024: King Abdullah II visited Al Hussein Technical University (HTU), which has graduated 688 students since its establishment in 2016, with a 100 per cent employment rate.
An initiative of the Crown Prince Foundation, HTU was established with the aim of bridging the gap between the number of graduates and their employment rates in technical fields.
Accompanied by Crown Prince Hussein , His Majesty toured the university, which is based on learning through practical projects and experiences.
Crown Prince Hussein said the university is successful thanks to the outstanding efforts of the team behind it, which has worked to provide quality education and training, with a focus on jobs of the future.
The Crown Prince spoke about the steady growth in enrolment levels in HTU, starting with 180 students in 2017 and reaching 2,600 students today, adding that admission is based on students' desire and readiness.
HTU offers bachelor's and technical degrees, and includes specialties in engineering and information technology, providing modern courses in data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and videogame design and development.
During a meeting with members of HTU’s board of trustees and deans, His Majesty was briefed by HTU President Ismael Al Hinti on the university's role in promoting technical education in Jordan to achieve high employment rates, as well as increasing students' ability to keep pace with labour market needs and the rapidly changing industrial sector.
He said the university has formed more than 245 partnerships with the public and private sectors locally and internationally to provide eight-month internship opportunities in a real work environment that provides students with practical and technical skills to ensure they later have the best employment opportunities.
The university's skills enhancement programmes have helped employ more than 2,800 young people in the ICT sector, while HTU’s THE CORE tech incubator and accelerator has supported more than 60 local start-ups, according to Hinti.
During a visit to the German Energy Academy, hosted at HTU’s School of Engineering Technology, His Majesty was briefed on the academy's role as a regional centre for honing the skills of professionals and engineers in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and smart grids.
At the robotics laboratory, the King also listened to a briefing on how the lab provides a dynamic environment for learning through experimentation and application.
At the university's library, which is the first public library at a Jordanian university opened in partnership with Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation, His Majesty and the Crown Prince spoke with a group of students and graduates and listened to their experiences at the university and their achievements.

Smuggling Lemons
Jumana Emil Abboud
2006
20', 4:3 aspect ratio, sound, 1 channel video.
Synopsis
In the video Smuggling Lemons from 2006, Jumana E. Abboud takes us on a journey from Jerusalem to Qalandiya/Ramallah. It is a journey of contrast, which begins in a green garden at the artist's grandparents home in Galilee and ends in a heap of ruins in Qalandiya/Ramallah. She is smuggling lemons. In fact she wanted to take an entire lemon tree with her, but she can't carry it along and must settle with the fruits. Quoting Jumana, "every Palestinian home once has a lemon tree in its reach, but an aggressor's acts of expulsion have not only divided Palestinians from eachother, but have also severed our reach to our own gardens. I attempt - through symbolic action - to carry the lemons, to smuggle a tree's worth across the divide. When completed, (and this you will not see in the video), I will invite you to drink sour lemonade made from the very lemons I smuggled; in so doing, obliterating the lemons entirely. Yet their taste remains in the memory of your consciousness". At first, the lemons are carried in a belt around the waist, that looks suspiciously like a garment a suicide bomber would use. Then they travel handheld along the demarcation wall. Images of the enormous grey concrete wall against the body of the luminous lemon (in the soft hand), brings us to recognize the imbalanced power situation in the region. Abboud visualizes the limitations in movement which the Palestinians experience daily, simply going from one city to another. - Pia Torgersen

May amnesia never kiss us on the mouth
Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme’s May amnesia never kiss us on the mouth (2020– ) examines how individuals bear witness to experiences of violence, loss, displacement, and forced migration through performance. Since the early 2010s, Abbas and Abou-Rahme have collected online recordings of everyday people singing and dancing in communal spaces in Iraq, Palestine, and Syria. This work brings these recordings together with new performances conceived by the artists, a dancer, and a group of musicians in the cultural underground in Ramallah, Palestine. According to Abbas and Abou-Rahme, through the circulation of this footage, “these fractured communities are resisting their own erasure and laying claim to space, self, and collectivity once more.”
This evolving project, co-commissioned by Dia Art Foundation and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, will be presented as both an online project and physical exhibition. The online platform will launch as part of Dia’s Artist Web Projects series. A subsequent exhibition will be presented at MoMA’s Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Studio.
Postscript: after everything is extracted
On December 10, the online project opens with a reflection on the act of mourning titled Postscript: after everything is extracted. Soon after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of the world, the artists gave focus to a piece of writing that they had begun before the lockdown, which speaks to a constant state of grief and pain experienced across virtual and physical spaces. This text will be layered with digital portraits and a new sound piece created by the artists in Palestine. The digital platform will expand in summer 2021 to include the extensive collection of found online recordings the artists have archived over the last decade alongside the original recordings.
May amnesia never kiss us on the mouth is co-commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Dia Art Foundation, New York.
May amnesia never kiss us on the mouth is made possible by support from the Khalid Shoman Foundation-Darat al Funun and by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

In the past 4 years, we've written songs, done concerts and plays, written a book series, developed an app (you'll see these last two soon), and now we're working on a worldwide curriculum to help teach every Arab child the Arabic language. But before we enter the next stage of our journey, we wanted to take a minute and take you on a journey backstage to show you all our accomplishments and what it takes to create everything you see on Adam Wa Mishmish. Behind every song written and every performance done are hours and months of hard work from a number of professionals, consultants and experts. This video is really a message of thanks to the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation that has supported us for the last 3 years. Without them, non of this would have been possible. It is also a message of thanks to all the parents and kids who watch us, come to our concerts and shows, and take the time to send us videos and tell us how much of a difference our program has made in their child's journey in learning Arabic. It all started with a single song to help teach our son Arabic, and now we help kids all over the world learn Arabic with over 55 episodes and songs, over 30 concerts, plays and shows, a book series with Dar Al Salwa, an augmented reality App with Maysalward, and over 100 children attending our conversational Arabic classes. These same classes are now being turned into a curiculum to help any Arab child anywhere in the world learn and love their mother tongue. 3/10/2017: Queen Rania visited the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation, where she was introduced to the foundation’s various cultural programs. Located in Jabal Amman, AHSF is a non-profit organization dedicated to investing in cultural and social innovation. The foundation’s work focuses on the advancement of thought leadership, literature and arts, and employment and innovation within local communities.
Her Majesty and the AHSF team joined a number of Jordanian innovators and startup founders at the library for a discussion on building identity through culture. The conversation focused on the vital role culture plays in identity formation, as well as its ability to drive innovation and entrepreneurship among the nation’s youth. During the conversation, participants addressed the necessity of enriching Arabic digital content catered to young children and the benefits of encouraging both creative and critical thinking from an early age. They also highlighted the importance of universal access to the arts, mentioning the need to support the musical sector, encourage local photographic talents, and use cinema to address social issues. (Source: Petra)
The conversation then turned to AHSF’s various cultural programs, including AHSF Cultural Days, held across Jordan’s governorates, as well as Jabal Amman Cultural Week. Qussisiya reaffirmed AHSF’s ongoing commitment to supporting culture, education, and science, particularly through the Abdul Hameed Shoman Fund for Scientific Research and the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Arab Researchers.
Her Majesty then stopped by the AHSF’s children’s library Knowledge Path, where children were engaged in storytelling, musical, and innovation-promoting activities. Under its collaboration with the Ministry of Education, AHSF aims to expand its programs into local schools, in addition to establishing school libraries and book clubs, enhancing school librarians’ training, and supporting technology and literacy-based student awards. AHSF was established by the Arab Bank in 1978. The foundation offers a vast selection of programs supporting creativity, scientific research, and cultural enrichment, which are aimed at positively impacting local communities.
