A loophole in the rules (rewrite)
So, someone on Ao3 asked for a part 2 to this! So I’m gonna get around to it, but first I had to re-read this part to refresh myself on my own plot, and...holy fuck. I just. I had to rewrite it. My food wars knowledge might be a tad rusty now, but I hated how the original was written, so I am! Fixing it. Hope you enjoy this rewrite lol!
Tohtsuki Academy. Japan’s, or maybe the world’s, pinnacle of culinary learning. A school known for it’s cut-throat tactics, and the fact that it was so expensive to attend that someone would’ve needed generational wealth for the entrance fee, let alone a semester’s tuition. So, to an outside observer, the student body was full of nothing but the snobbiest, elitest rich kids from around the world. Sent to earn prestige, network with other politicians-to-be, and learn how to prepare and cook insane ingredients that cost more than a human soul. And, while you were one of those generationally wealthy students who’d been sent to either net a rich husband or a diploma, even you could agree with the common person’s take. Because, for every Tohtsuki student that was self aware and non-judgemental, there were at least five others who looked down their noses at anything that wasn’t wagyu steaks for dinner or had a price tag to rival Kopi Luwak’s.
But, at the same time, you never took the criticism too seriously, because there was simply no way a person who couldn’t attend the school could know the reality of the actual madness that the student body had in it’s veins.
That reality being that the academy was more or less lord some unholy amalgamation of lord of the flies and the wild west. That you could step on somebody’s five-hundred-dollar shoe and be thrown into a cooking battle that could cost you something as simple as a slap to your pride for losing, or the deed to your family’s entire soy sauce empire. And that it was all determined by cooking skill with a council of ten 15-18 year old students to rule over the chaos.
Which, for a normal, sane student such as yourself wasn’t much of an issue. After all, in your years at the school, you’d made no move to cause trouble or draw attention, so the only time you were involved with a Food War was when you and your friends decided to watch one after class. Nobody had any reason to ruin your life for status or pride, and you were happy to keep it that way until you graduated in just a few months.
At least, that had been your plan...up until you’d allowed yourself to be swept up in the thrill that was Daichi Watanabi.
Being eighteen, like yourself, with a love for food and cooking akin to a frenzied shark and a confident, loud personality that seemed to fill a room, Daichi had swept into your life a little over a month ago with the determination to win your heart and little else. And, while he did have a reputation as a delinquent, and for being very hair-triggered on his declarations of a Food War, after you’d spent your entire high school career only a small step above a ghost, it had been exciting to be pursued and desired by such an energetic and wild man.
However, it had only taken that short amount of time together for you to realize that, while Daichi’s energy was infectious, and his aggressively confident way of throwing himself at things he wanted was a great source of spontaneity and inspiration for you. It was also the reason he was so willing to challenge anybody to a food war over immensely petty and perceived slights to his pride.
Not to mention that the man easily fell onto the entitled and elitist side of Tohtsuki academy’s demographic at times, had his own impressive petty streak, and had grown increasingly jealous in just a few short weeks of dating. To the point that he had just about imploded in on himself when he learned that you had been paired up with the eighth seat of the council of ten for a simple class project, even though at that point you hadn’t even become official with him. Which, as you looked back, you could admit was a red flag that you’d blatantly ignored.
While on one hand, you could understand. Kuga Terunori was not only one of the ten mafia bosses that ran the school, but he was considered to be one of the prettiest men in your class. So, you could see why Daichi was threatened by the thought of him as your project partner and all the time that would require you to spend with him. On the other hand, however, you still took offense to the fact that your boyfriend had so little trust in you that he felt the need to try and chaperon the few times you and Kuga had needed to meet up outside of class for a project. Regardless of the logic behind it, you couldn’t deny that Daichi’s reaction had swiftly soured the entire relationship for you.
Honestly, how has Daichi not gotten his ass beat yet? Like, in a literal sense. You thought to yourself while you sat beside your left over chocolate charlotte in the late-afternoon sun. The baked good forgotten in its tupperware just like your school notes were in your lap. Like, he tried to outright intimidate Kuga to never work with me again, how the hell hasn’t Kuga done something to get back at him for that? He never struck me as the type to brush that type of treatment off- Wait, I’m still Daichi’s girlfriend, is it bad to be wondering this stuff?
Before you could mull the question over, a shadow washed over the page of your notebook and stayed there until you looked up at the cause. Only to be greeted by the smug smirk of the aforementioned eighth seat who stood in front of you with his hands on his hips. “Uh, hello Kuga, sir. What can I do for you?” You asked, your posture quickly straightened so that you weren’t leaned forward and awkwardly close to your classmate. “Hi!” He chirped, the simple word enough to instantly put you on edge. Because, while you hadn’t made a habit of talking to Kuga, you were quick to realize in the week you’d spent on a project with him that he only used such a friendly, sugary tone to mock someone, or endear himself to them. So, you couldn’t help but scan over the man for any signs of which motive he might have in that moment.
Which, allowed you to note the way the sunlight seemed to turn his peachy brown eyes pink, and the fluffy puff of sunflower-blonde bangs that distracted from the carefully unkept, chocolate-colored back half of his hair, as well as notice how his cinnamon-sandalwood cologne oddly complimented the ghost of sichuan peppercorns that permanently haunted every fiber of his school uniform. But didn’t give you any hints for why the council member stood in front of you as if he had blackmail to use against you. So, you tried again to ask, “May I help you?…” “Oh, I just came by to invite you to an important food war, that’s it.” He said with that sickly sweet tone still in his voice. Maybe even dialed up since he could probably tell it discomforted you. “W-why?” “Because I feel like you should be there.” Abruptly, his voice dropped down to a villainous purr while he continued without his eyes ever leaving yours, “I also sort of, y’know, just want you there.” And in that moment, you understood that the dual-haired man was less asking, and more informing you of where you should be. And you knew, that he knew, you didn’t have the option to refuse. So, you instead sighed. “Alright, when is this food war, then? And, um, why did you want me there exactly, sir?” “Oh, you’ll see! And it’s right now, so come on!” He sang, his tone suddenly back to that bright and sunny facade while he grabbed your hand and dragged you to your feet and off towards the school’s arena with no care for the notebook that fell from your lap, nor the cake you had no time to grab.
While you still had questions that rattled around your head as you followed behind the eighth seat of the council of ten, it was pretty clear that Kuga Terunori wouldn’t answer them, so you simply had to hope that the food war would somehow provide the answers you so desperately craved.
But, as soon as the dual-haired man pulled you across the threshold of the building, Kuga left you to fight the flow of eager, gossip-y students with a simple, “Get to the front of the crowd, kay?~” sang back to you while he trotted off to the green rooms to prepare for his duel.
Maybe I should just leave. This feels insanely sketchy… You thought, though you still let the flow of the other excited students pull you to the stadium seats. And, while you did briefly debate doing as you were told or not, you ended up leaned against the guard rail to watch with the excited gaggle of Kuga fangirls as the contestants strolled out to take their spots at the temporary cooking stations set up in the middle of the gymnasium-esque room. Though, while the girls around you admired the eighth seat in his spotlessly white changshen- or, maybe chanshen-inspired? You couldn’t exactly tell -with gold trim, with his confident, photogenic smile, and peacock-esque hairstyle, your own eyes were quick to lock onto his opponent instead.
Daichi Watanabi, what in that wad of chewed up bubblegum did you bargain to get the eighth seat of the council of ten to agree to this stunt?! You thought at your loud-mouthed, soon-to-be ex as he strutted past Kuga to take his spot. His own winning smile on his face despite the lack of real interest in him from the crowd, his french-style chef’s outfit proudly adorned with faded stains from his chaotic cooking style and many other frivolous food wars. Though, you dialed back into the announcer’s explanation of theme and reasoning just in time to catch, “-And, as a reward for winning! The two have agreed to wager…” The dark-haired girl paused as she read the notecard over again, then glanced at the judges before she continued uncertainly. “Um...D-Daichi Watanabi’s girlfriend?”
