My trip to Madrid started with a very New York Story. My flight was scheduled for 9:30PM. I got out of work at 5PM, and was walking toward the Franklin Ave. stop by 5:30PM. I thought, "Plenty of time. I'll take the train, save a little on a cab, get there early and have an overpriced beer at the airport while I draw the planes taking off." The 2-3 train crawled out of the station and entered the darkness. A minute later we slowed, then stopped. A voice said, "We are being held for the moment. We should be moving shortly." 10 minutes passed. "Once again passengers, we should be moving shortly." 10 minutes passed. Then another. Then another. At 7:10, I thought, "Did I do something wrong? Is there some karmic debt that I must pay off? What is going on?!" I was still an hour away from JFK. I had left an hour and a half ago but had traveled less than a 10-minute walk from home. "Once again passengers..." Fortunately, this train was filled with some friendly people, and a couple assured me I could still make it. They said take the train from Atlantic Ave, not an Uber. It was rush hour and Uber would do me in. I trusted them, despite having no particular faith in trains anymore. We talked, shared some stories, and I snuck these drawings in. Finally, the train budged to the next station, Grand Army Plaza. I bolted out - Bolted like Usain Bolt. Kids, get the fuck out of my way! I arrived in time, but soaked in sweat and cutting it much closer than I would have liked for my first trip of this sort. TSA gave me a hard time. The guy said, "Sir, why are you wet? I'm confused. Why are you wet? Step aside, show me your hands. Sir, why are you wet??" They scanned me for chemicals or something. I wasn't sure what they wanted. I WAS wet - wet from July heat and a subway ride from hell. Writing this from Madrid, Spain with a big smile on my face! Inktober: Freeze When I can't think of anything to draw I start with people. In this case, I began with the free spirit in the right corner and then continued by adding copies in all directions, which kind of made a human snowflake ❄❄❄ Since coming back from my trip to Europe this summer, I've put the sketchbook aside and spent most of my free time learning basic animation skills. It's amazing what's possible with the Adobe programs. The Jordaan. What impressed me most about Amsterdam was its recurring shapes. The cyclists, the trees, and the narrow, crooked buildings often formed similar compositions. I wanted to draw as much as possible during this trip, but there was also too much too see, too many views and not enough time, so I floated around like a butterfly, making quick sketches here and there, using those shapes as a start and end point. Official Urban Sketchers Stamp Alert! Amsterdam is too beautiful. I spent the past few days biking around the Jordaan and city center, bumping into other people from around the world, and drinking amstel by the canals. Other than a few destinations, I've had no plan other than draw draw draw. I started this one on my first day and have been adding to it since. The markers have a mind of their own and want to make everything a cartoon, but I am enjoying that pull and just letting loose. The city has a very strong sense of shape. Madrid was like this, but in a different way. Amsterdam feels more inorganic - circles and squares - but I don't think there's a single straight stop sign in this area. They are all quaintly bent. It's a lot of fun seeing other cities in this way. The shapes got me thinking about a new animation, like the boat I did last week, but a couple steps further. If you swipe left, you'll see some ideas brewing. Motorcycles. Bikes. Tiny cars. Today I met with a whole crew of artists and after our sketch crawl, we went to the main event HQ, which was in Zuiderkerk, a 17th century church. There, they had these stamps, so I duly made my sketchbook official. It was also nice because I wasn't sure what to put in that panel. Tomorrow I will visit the Rijksmuseum and the Vang Gogh museum.
