I'm very obsessed with birdkins because the vast majority of them are so so beautiful. The ones with vibrant colours that brighten the room. The ones that make me feel like I'm looking into deep space as I admire their wings. The ones with elegance and grace that just steal your focus. The ones so small and precious that you just want to cup in your hands gently. The ones that run so fast on legs so very powerful. The ones that sing like the wind on a beautiful lukewarm day. The ones with such pride and strength in their eyes as they soar higher than the others.
And then there's my shoebill ass self just staring at them like

pathologic furry designs because im a nerd
(aglaya, rubin, and lara, *ft artemy)
i usually dont post uncolored drawings/doodles but i plan on making a few of these
HUGE thanks to my buddies for help/input on these..both are huge brained and awesome at art follow them now
heres the thought process (spoiler free, mostly based on patho 2)
me and my buddies were in a call for all of these and we had a very intellectual conversation about all of them. when looking for furry designs i usually think of personality, mannerisms, and likeness.
Aglaya, Shoebill
both of the friends i asked havent played the game past day 5 (one of them is on day 2) so i asked “what animal would she be” with just a picture of her model. i was interested to see what 2 people who’ve only seen her once (in the intro) would think of her purely on vibes and brief dialogue. the first suggestion was “some kinda bird” and that seemed to stick.
a bit tall, a bit intimidating. so we threw out Herons, Ostriches, Peacocks…
Shoebill seemed to fit. I wanted a bird that was either grey or black, some kinda desaturated color but also one that was tall and a bit scary. Shoebills are definitely considered pretty scary. theyre also super tall and i remember saying in the call "these things are huge if i saw them flying i would cry." when it comes to shoebills, i imagine them towering over most other animals, especially with that neck and beak! they're also ambush predators i believe. shoebills fit Aglaya's first impressions perfectly.
i almost made her a Dalmatian... im glad i didnt...
Rubin, Skinny Pig
I wasn't even going to initially draw Rubin here... it started by me asking "who'd be a naked mole rat?" and the immediate answer was "Rubin..." which made me remember that he was bald LMAO. I figured that fit a little, and the original drawing was him as a naked mole rat. a few things werent quite right though.
first, digging. i cant imagine Rubin as an animal who's entire thing is digging around and being dirty, he's a doctor and, other than blood, i can't imagine he'd wanna be dirty...
second, social groups. as far as i know, naked mole rats are very social within their own circles? just from the early game (as early as the first 3 days?) he's pretty antisocial and seems to have a distaste for the Kin, even if influenced by grief(the emotion not the person). he even seems reluctant to be close to close friends.
and, of course, moles have to be saved for someone else... we'll get there. WINK
..i dont remember how Skinny Pigs came up, i think i was just googling them and thought they were funny since i have a friend who owns some.. i did a bit of googlin and asking my buddy in the call about skinny pig mannerisms.. theyre pretty...territorial? at least males to other males, theyre pretty aggressive as far as i know. this definitely fit Rubin. the OTHER reason for any kind of guinea pig was considered was because of the concept of "test guinea pigs" and not in a literal sense, but just the concept, because of Rubin's connection to Isidor. i will say i felt like the smartest person on earth when i thought of that.
also the cute ears absolutely influenced the decision.
Lara, Generic Ass Wolf
Lara was genuinely so difficult... unlike the other two, there were literally no suggestions being thrown out. my description was something like "maybe something small, cute, short tempered, but social?" and, for some reason, that was a tall order. my first guess was a mouse, but that wasnt perfect... we thought we'd have to turn to bugs and fish, though a lot of bugs and fish are hard to find personalities for.. at a surface level at least. we decided to save bugs and fish for other people...
and then, the suggestion of "wolf" came up, albeit reluctantly. when it comes to furry-fying characters, wolves and dogs are definitely...up there, in terms of "most used/obvious".. but really, think about it.
Believe it or not, wolves can be a little anxious, if not in a way that presents itself as anger/defense. this is also how i described Lara, "anxious in a way that presents as anger." also, wolves, while sometimes being a little solitary, are commonly in packs. which is...Lara's, like, Whole Thing. a house for the living etc etc..
I don't think i need to explain wolves too much either way. theyre The Furry Animal. whatever you know about wolves is probably true for Lara. it seems low-effort but trust me this decision took forever LMAO
and i mean...look at her. she looks like a wolf
*Artemy here is a bull because... yeah. that's the most obvious one. as #1 artemy fan i couldn't in good conscious make him anything other than a bull even if it's low effort idgaf... ill look at types of bulls for him later.
hope you liked my rambles..

i realized i don't have a pinned
so. i'm ebin, biromantic, raccoon therian ghost kin, i'm part of a system and our main is @terracentrism
i go by it/its/itself and id, which is it in latin
here's my carrd if you're interested
if i had to label myself, i'd say i'm a procyon aethereum exspiravit, which means either "the ghost of an aerial raccoon" or "a raccoon in spirit, soul, breath, life and death" — the later being a figurative and philosophical interpretation of it
procyon-aethereum is also my fictional species and my fursona, who's an anthro raccoon that wears feathers on its body and a shoebill stork mask to cover its face
i am into politics, literature, history, fashion, languages, culture and writing. out of these, brazilian culture, history and brazilian-portuguese literature are my favorites
i usually call myself a communist sort of as a joke, because though the foundation of my ideology comes from communism, i am definitely way closer to being an anarchist. though again i don't like to put myself in boxes and labels, so all i can say for certain is that far right people can get the fuck away from me
im a radical inclusionist in regards to gender and sexuality, which do not include pedophilia and bestiality in any way. i am welcoming of people with paraphilias as long as you're anti-contact or exclusively consensual contact with those who are able to consent.
i support systems of all origins and i don't want anti-endos interacting with me
this is a personal blog by the way and i don't want to be involved in syscourse

You like birds, you like Octopath Traveler, so the question is: what type of bird would each traveler be?
THIS IS A GOOD QUESTION
Olberic: shoebill stork. I have no valid reason except the Aesthetic
Cyrus: hmm... african grey parrot? Extremely intelligent, harbors chaotic energy... I look at them and don't feel Dad vibes, but funky uncle vibes. On the other hand I absolutely see him as a mynah bird as well
Tressa: budgie!!! Social lil fellas, smooth talkers, bouncy and full of joy, really curious and bold!
Ophilia: ring-necked dove, or some other bird in the pigeon-dove category. They're calm and peaceful (and I see Lianna as a mourning dove)
Primrose: ironically... my first thought was a crow. They're very intelligent but also fiercely protective of their own. It's not unlike them to exact revenge (aka shit a ton on your car) if you've done wrong to one of their kin. But also I have to mention birds-of-paradise because their dance ahdhsgsg (also also: bourkes parakeet. Calm, reserved, elegant and one of my favorite birds)
Alfyn: cockatiel. The crest. His HAIR. Also the embodiment of the sun, social, get along well with other birds, and they Heal me
Therion: parrotlet. Smol, can lash out and be moody, but also sassy and bonds strongly (typically to one person while tolerating others). Their beaks are like knives....my fingers Know this. They keep to a tight-knit group (either pairs or a small flock). Alternatively, crow as well. They're thieves >:( ALSO honorable mention: broody hen, source: you
H'aanit: african grey hornbill or a great-horned owl? I am... not too sure. But when I look at her I feel these in my soul

Here we go: We’re starting out with the fun ones. Time to vote in the NEORNITHEAN FAMILY you want, and then a specific bird will be picked from that family in the last week of the prelims, solely so that write-ins won’t be necessary. Please READ the below information so that you make an informed voting choice! You have through January 7th!
HIGHLIGHTS & INELIGIBLES
Palaeognaths
The first major division of modern birds, with the rest being neognaths. All lineages except for the tinamous and lithornithids are flightless. Highlighted families include Lithornithidae (early flighted palaeognaths with long slender bills), Aepyornithidae (elephant birds), Rheidae (rheas), and Dinornithidae (giant moa). List of ineligible candidates: Struthio (ostriches, family Struthionidae), Casuarius (cassowaries, family Casuariidae), Apteryx (kiwi, family Apterygidae)
Galloanserans
The earliest-diverging group of neognaths. Modern galloanserans include a wide variety of land and waterfowl. Highlighted families include Pelagornithidae (birds that evolved fake teeth coming out of their beaks), Dromornithidae (large, flightless herbivorous birds that resemble emus or moa), Anatidae (waterfowl such as ducks, geese, and swans), Phasianidae (landfowl such as pheasants, partridges, and turkeys), and Presbyornithidae (duck relatives that mimicked flamingos & lived in the latest Cretaceous). List of ineligible candidates: Gallus (chicken & junglefowl, family Phasianidae), Pavo (Indian peafowl & green peafowl, family Phasianidae), Gastornis
Strisorians
A group of mostly insect-eating neognaths, including some of the most specialized vertebrate fliers. Highlighted families include Apodidae (swifts, fast flying insectivores that spend much of their lives in the air), Caprimulgidae (nightjars, nocturnal or crepuscular insectivores), Steatornithidae (oilbirds, nocturnal frugivores capable of echolocation), and Trochilidae (hummingbirds, the smallest living birds, capable of hovering flight). List of ineligible candidates: Nyctibius (potoos, family Nyctibiidae), Mellisuga (bee & vervain hummingbirds, family Trochilidae), Podargus (tawny frogmouth & other members of Podargus, family Podargidae)
Columbavians

Highlighted families include Columbidae (pigeons, stout-bodied mainly herbivorous birds that are often kept as pets), Musophagidae (turacos, arboreal frugivores with unique pigments in their feathers), Cuculidae (cuckoos, mainly insectivorous arboreal and terrestrial birds), and Otididae (bustards, terrestrial birds including some of the heaviest modern flying birds). List of ineligible candidates: Columba (rock dove/pigeon & other members of Columba, family Columbidae), Raphus (dodo, family Columbidae)
Gruiforms
A group of mostly ground-dwelling neognaths often associated with water, including the cranes, rails, and their close relatives. Highlighted families include Gruidae (cranes, long-legged omnivorous birds), Rallidae (rails, mostly secretive semi-aquatic birds), Aptornithidae (adzebills, large flightless, possibly predatory, extinct birds from New Zealand), and Heliornithidae (finfoots, grebe-like aquatic birds from the tropics). List of ineligible candidates: Grus (whooping crane & other members of Grus, family Gruidae)
Mirandornitheans & Charadriiforms
Two groups of neognaths that may or may not be closely related, both mainly foraging in or near water. Mirandornitheans include grebes and flamingos, whereas the very diverse Charadriiforms include gulls, sandpipers, auks, and many more. Highlighted families include Phoenicopteridae (flamingos, long-legged filter feeders), Podicipedidae (grebes, diving birds with lobed rather than webbed feet), Scolopacidae (sandpipers, a diverse group that mainly forages on shore), Laridae (gulls, terns, and skimmers, agile fliers that forage near the water surface), and Alcidae (auks, wing-propelled diving birds). List of ineligible candidates: Pinguinus (great auk, family Alcidae)
Ardeans
A great diversity of neognaths that mostly hunt in aquatic environments, including some of the most specialized marine dinosaurs. Highlighted families include Spheniscidae (penguins, a semi-aquatic group of flightless birds living mostly in the Southern Hemisphere), Phaethontidae (tropicbirds, a group of seabirds with extremely long tail feathers and very small feet), Gaviidae (loons, diving birds that resemble ducks & geese but are not closely related and are extremely clumsy on land), Pelecanidae (pelicans, birds with large beaks that allow for the consumption of huge quantities of seafood), and Sulidae (boobies and gannets, seabirds that plunge-dive for prey). List of ineligible candidates: Balaeniceps (shoebill, family Balaenicipitidae), Eudyptula (little blue penguin & Australian little penguin, family Spheniscidae)
Accipitrimorphs & Opisthocomiforms
Accipitrimorphs include the majority of diurnal birds of prey. Opisthocomiforms include the hoatzin, an unusual herbivorous South American bird. The two groups are probably not close kin, but a recent study found opisthocomiforms closely related to telluravians, a diverse group of mostly arboreal birds including accipitrimorphs and the remaining bird groups in this survey. Highlighted families include Cathartidae (large scavenging birds mostly from the New World), Accipitridae (hawks, eagles, and Old World vultures), Teratornithidae (giant extinct birds of prey, among the largest flying birds ever to have existed), and Opisthocomidae (the unusual hoatzin and its close fossil relatives). List of ineligible candidates: Gypaetus (bearded vulture, family Accipitridae), Sagittarius (secretary bird, family Sagittariidae), Opisthocomus (hoatzin, family Opisthocomidae), Harpia (harpy eagle, family Accipitridae)
Owls
Owls, a group of mostly nocturnal birds of prey. You’ve probably heard of them. Highlighted families include Tytonidae (barn owls and their close relatives), Strigidae (all other modern owls), and a variety of fossil owl groups. List of ineligible candidates: Tyto (true barn owls, grass owls, & masked owls, family Tytonidae), Athene (burrowing owl & other members of Athene, family Strigidae)
Non-Piciform Coraciimorphs
Coraciimorphs are a group of mostly tree-dwelling telluravians. Many nest in tree cavities or burrows, and they encompass a diversity of ecologies including predators, fruit-eaters, and omnivores. Highlighted families include Coliidae (mousebirds, frugivores that climb and hop acrobatically through the trees), Alcedinidae (kingfishers, predatory birds that catch prey by diving from a perch), Bucerotidae (hornbills, omnivorous birds often with bony crests on their large bills), and Trogonidae (trogons, fruit-eating birds with backwards-pointing first and second toes). A particularly diverse group of coraciimorphs including woodpeckers and barbets. Highlighted families include Gracilitarsidae (small, long-legged extinct piciforms that may have been agile fliers), Galbulidae (jacamars, long-billed insectivores with shiny plumage), Picidae (woodpeckers, tree-climbing birds that drill holes in trees while foraging and nesting), and Ramphastidae (toucans, particularly large-billed barbets from the Neotropics). List of ineligible candidates: None
Cariamiforms & Falcons
Two groups of mostly predatory telluravians. Cariamiforms are ground birds whereas falcons are mainly fast aerial hunters. Highlighted families include Ameghinornithidae (extinct herbivorous ground birds that may not actually be cariamiforms - but what they actually are is poorly studied), Phorusrhacidae (terror birds, often large-bodied extinct flightless predatory birds), Cariamidae (seriemas, long-legged predatory birds with retractable second toes), and Falconidae (falcons, mostly fast-flying predators as mentioned previously). List of ineligible candidates: Falco peregrinus (peregrine falcon, family Falconidae), Titanis, Phorusrhacos (both family Phorusrhacidae)

Non-Corvidan Non-Passeridan Passerines
Passerines (or perching birds) are mostly small-bodied insect- and seed-eating birds, as well as the majority of modern bird species. The following are passerines and passerine-like birds that do not belong to two of the more specific passerine groups Corvida and Passerida. Highlighted families include Zygodactylidae (extinct passerine relatives with backward-pointing first and fourth toes like parrots), Pipridae (manakins, a group of Neotropical passerines in which the males often perform elaborate courtship dances), Pittidae (pittas, often colorful birds that live on the forest floor), Tyrannidae (tyrant flycatchers, insect-eating passerines that often aggressively mob predatory birds), and Menuridae (lyrebirds, terrestrial birds known for vocal mimicry, males have elaborate tail plumage). List of ineligible candidates: None

One of the most diverse passerine clades, including the groups closely related to crows. Highlighted families include Oriolidae (orioles, arboreal Old World omnivores including a few species with poisonous feathers), Paradisaeidae (birds of paradise, Australasian passerines in which the males often have extravagant plumage and spectacular courtship rituals), Vangidae (vangas, a group of Madagascan passerines with very diverse ecologies), Laniidae (shrikes, predatory passerines that impale prey on pointed objects), and Corvidae (crows, jays, and magpies, highly intelligent omnivores). List of ineligible candidates: Corvus (crows, ravens, and rooks), Cyanocitta (blue jay & Steller’s jay) (both family Corvidae)

Halcyon
Distantly related to the Ercinee, these sea-going birds even nest at sea, making them one of a very few birds which might be called truly aquatic. Not entirely dissimilar in appearance to the Shoebill, though much much smaller, not much larger than their Kingfisher kin, these creatures are equally dangerous and will hunt a wide number of aquatic species in order to feed themselves and their young. Despite it’s small size, however, it’s long tailfeathers are popular with Greek wandmakers as the creatures are, for all their smallness, incredibly powerful magically, being able to preserve calm weather for the extent of a full week in their immediate area, simply so they can lay and hatch their eggs.
Halcyons generally keep to themselves, travelling in mated pairs, keeping small rafts to sleep on at night - though they have been known to sleep on the wing and on the water when the weather is suitable and the waters are safe - and only making nests when they are about to lay. Eggs usually hatch on the third day after laying and can fly by the end of the week, when the birds’ ability to calm the weather ends. Offspring usually stay with the parents for some two to three months before travelling off to make their own way, only occasionally gathering in clusters, using bioluminescent displays to try to find mates. Interestingly, related specimens tend to have very similar displays, and Halcyons are known to seek mates with displays as different from their own as possible.
