I Ate It!Yumigeta Ako (23.10.15)
Good evening🌛
I'm Yumigeta Ako 🛑
Thank you very much for all of your snack recommendations‼️
For savoury snacks you mentioned Kaki no Tane、Bakauke、onigiri senbei、kinako mochi、potato crisps…
And for sweet snacks、you mostly mentioned chocolately things like Alfort!
Yeah、I totally agree…。
A mix of sweet and savoury、is just the best〜
Also local delicacies!
Okay so、looking at your responses
Maybe、there are lots of dishes that only exist in certain areas、so you don't realise that so you don't think of it as a 「Local delicacy」?!
There were a lot of comments saying 「There aren't really any local delicacies from my area…」、which is what made me think that。
But I completely understand。
The other day I found out that 「Fried Kuro Hanpen」 isn't served in school lunches anywhere else!
I bet the citizens of Shizuoka prefecture will know what I mean 🤣 Fried Kuro Hanpen always appears in school lunches right 笑lol(With fish and fried rice balls)
Although I wanted to learn about dishes from other areasー、I noticed something interesting from these unexpected results so I'm glad I asked!
Thank you very much for answering‼️
Also today…
Was the end of our Osaka performancesー‼️
This time we had 4 performances over 2days、and I managed to give my all in every performanceー!!!!
It was so much fun♡

I feel like I'm finally getting used to your cheers and calls(At our First Event I was surprised each and every time 笑lol)
And before 「Suggoi FEVER!」 today you all went 「Ohh」、which was insane🤦‍♀️
I exclaimed like 「Uwaa」!
I really feel like our performances are a success because you're all there getting fired up!
Everyone、you're so Suggoiii
And And
Today was Fukumura-san's last Osaka performance!
Today I was surprised when I realised that when we come to Osaka on our next tour Fukumura-san won't be there。
...
Next up is Ehimeー!!!!
My first time in Shikoku!!!!!!
I'm nervous about going to a new venue for the first time but I've managed it every time so far、so I'll do my best😊
I'm so excited〜!
⋆┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈⋆
Well then it's time for today's 【Gettaa Life】✨
Today…
I ate…
That thing I really wanted⤴︎

Tatatatatatataakoyaki❤️
...
I just couldn't forget the takoyaki I ate at our First Event、and I've been wanting to eat it again for ageーs so I'm thrilled that I had it today!
Ah、by the way I drew the background myself
Each takoyaki has a slightly different amount of seasoning so take a look okay 💕︎
...
I really do love Osaka takoyaki♡
I Getted 「The flavour of Osaka's Speciality」✨️
If I have time to go sightseeing next time I'm in Osaka、
I want to try touring around a bunch of takoyaki stores〜❗️

⋆┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈⋆
T/N News and information has not been translated
⋆┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈⋆
...
And did you notice anything different in today's photo?
My double eyelid is thinner that usual…
My right eye is pretty much a total monolid!
So I used a brighter coloured eyeshadow than ususal!
I'm glad you can see the colour more clearly than usual〜
I also extend my eyeliner more on monolid days〜( ◜ω◝ )

Bakudeku canon divergent, vampire quirk AU

If he’d remembered the map’s, he’d checked out before coming correctly, the lake was less than a quarter mile beyond the tree line from where he stood in the clearing. There was a small farming village west of the lake, and it was maybe another couple miles next to the dam. Bakugou was certain that the authorities had canvased the town as well as surrounding areas, but if he was lucky, they’d missed something or someone that saw something that day that could aid in his search. Either way, it was another starting point.
After hiking to the nearest village, Bakugou sought out their small police station. The place maybe had two officers on duty per shift, and three shifts rounding out a day. For major cases, detectives were brought in from the next larger city. It was the epitome of small and very common in the more rural areas of Japan. Because of his notoriety, the authorities knew who he was, but luckily had no idea that he wasn’t a part of the task force.
“I’m doing follow ups,” he did his best to sound official and reign in his temper. “Making sure that no one reported seeing the hero called Deku?” The officer shook his head. “So, no strange events from April twenty-seventh?”
“Strange? Not on that date, but the next day, there was an attack on a citizen. They claimed that they were ambushed late in the evening but could not give any description. The man is a known drunkard and we assumed he was intoxicated and hallucinating until we saw the marks on his arms.”
“Like scratches?”
“No, they looked like an animal bit him. He swore he hadn’t been drinking, but when we made contact, he was still slurring his words and out of it as if he was.”
‘Not very strange but okay,’ Bakugou made a mental note. “Anything else?”
“Two days after that, a woman reported seeing an unusual green streak in the sky.”
Green?! That peaked Bakugou’s interest. “What direction was it going in?”
The man shrugged, “we didn’t ask because we assumed that she just saw a meteor or something going through the atmosphere.”
“Ugh!” he palmed his face. “I need to speak with her immediately. That could be a clue.” Bakugou proverbially rolled his eyes at the thought. ‘Bet the pro searchers didn’t think to ask these kinds of questions.’ Of course, if all you ask is a closed ended, ‘did you see x’ kind of question you’ll only get a yes or no answer. If Midoriya was on the run, he would be a fool to show himself so easily to citizens. So, the clues would lay in the minor details.
“Certainly,” the desk sergeant responded. “I will have an officer take you to her home.”
It was nice not having to walk or use his quirk unnecessarily. A patrol officer drove him to the edge of the town where the woman lived in a small cottage on her farming property. The home was a half mile from the main town and without streetlights, the night would be much darker with a better vantage point to see any phenomena in the sky. While the officer waited in the car with the hero’s belongings, Bakugou knocked on the woman’s door. When she answered, he introduced himself and asked her to tell him any details she could recall from the night of the green streak.
According to the older farmer woman, the light appeared to have originated from the forest bordering her farm and headed in an easterly direction. She pointed in the direction and Bakugou surmised it could be in the direction of Tokyo, but it was too general to know for sure.
“But how do you know it wasn’t a meteor or something naturally occurring?” Bakugou questioned the woman.
She smiled, “Young man, I have seen many in my lifetime and they always travel at a steady pace against the horizon. This one started off slower then sped up. In fact, right before it would have been over the town, it’s speed increased and moved so fast it disappeared in the blink of an eye.”
As if ‘it’ worried about being seen by the townsfolk, Bakugou realized. “And ma’am, are you sure it was a green colored light?”
Again, she nodded and smiled, “like a copper fire streaking through the sky.”
It took a moment for Bakugou to realize what the woman meant. Copper produced a greenish flame when burned, and green was also the color of Midoriyas quirk.
“One last question,” Bakugou asked. “Is there anything else you can think of, or anything in the area you saw the light coming from such as abandoned buildings, any cave systems, or maybe strange animal activity around that time?”
“Why yes! There’s an old abandoned mine in that part of the forest. There are probably still tunnels. My grandfather once worked them until it was closed down.”
Bakugou thanked the woman for her information and told the officer to wait for him while he checked out the mine, but the officer explained he needed to get back to town.
“I can come back around dark once I finish work and pick you up,” the man offered. “That would give you about four hours to do what you gave to do.”
“Yeah, that’ll work. Can you hold onto my stuff?”
“Sure, I’ll just take it to the station.”
“Perfect.” Bakugou agreed. He’ll probably need to stay the night anyway before moving on.
Once the patrol officer was gone, the hero blasted his way towards the forest in the direction the woman had provided to him. She’d told him that the area might be overgrown in many places, but the last time she’d been there, she remembered an old utility shed still standing. And sure, enough the growth was quite dense with little snippets of human structures peeking through the brush. Bakugou first found the entrance to the mine shaft but saw no evidence of activity such as disturbances in the dirt, no footprints, or signs of a campfire, anything that would suggest a human had been using it as a shelter. Next, he moved onto the shed the woman told him about and saw that the structure was still standing. Not surprising from what he could see of the material. Red pine was a strong type of wood resistant to mold, suitable for this kind of environment.
That’s where he saw the first glimpses of activity. Bakugou knelt and touched the recently disturbed earth in front of the shed’s door. Despite being around a month old, the dense tree canopy had protected the footprints and scuff marks from washing away. He moved into the small structure itself, gauging it was approximately eight feet wide by 10 feet deep. The walls were lined with broken shelves, some still holding a myriad of rotting, rusting tools, or other junk left behind. Nothing of real use, even if…
Bakugou’s eyes fall onto a jumbled pile of rags left on a shelf near the entrance. The lighting was poor, but when he got closer, he saw the red spots of dried blood. His breathing slowed, could it be? “Were you injured Deku?” He mumbled to himself as he picked up and turned the rags over in his hands to inspect them. It wasn’t a lot of blood, couldn’t have been very life-threatening injuries, but still, seeing the evidence made his blood boil. “Reckless idiot!” Bakugou screamed. “Where the fuck are you?!”
Of course, there was no way for him to confirm the blood was Midoriya’s and not some passing vagrant in the area. So, he kept searching the ruins of the building. If his friend had sheltered there, maybe he’d left something else behind, just a trace to confirm it was in fact Deku. He found a small burned-out area on the ground with remnants of a fire, including animal bones perhaps from a meal? There were other disturbances on the dirty shelves from a previous person rummaging around the left-over junk, but nothing more. Talk about frustrating!
No, wait… Bakugou zeroed in on a tiny scrap of fabric partially obscured by a shelf as if it had fallen and been pushed underneath by accident. It was only a quarter-size of his palm, and the torn piece of fabric wasn’t discolored which meant it hadn’t been there long. ‘This looks like a piece of his uniform,’ Bakugou surmised. It matched the green color Midoriya wore. Now he had a torn fabric the same color of Deku’s uniform, the green streak seen in the sky shortly after the battle, and the recent blood on rags. Circumstantially, it was good enough to convince Bakugou that this had been his friend and the man really was still alive and on the run.
“See!” Bakugou raged to himself in that empty forest. “Stupid idiots! I should’ve been out here looking sooner not them! Who else would know Deku better than me?!” ‘Tch,’ those fools in the task force didn’t know anything considering the woman told him no one else had talked to her before him. What took him less than a day to find, was more evidence than the authorities had found in a whole month of searching!
Originally, Bakugou had planned to stay in the area, but if he believed this promising information, Midoriya was heading back east. ‘Hopefully back home.’ Three weeks had passed since this woman’s claim of a green streak, so either Midoriya hadn’t arrived back in Shizuoka, or he was still hiding out somewhere. Either way this was promising; something better than nothing at all. So, he took the officer up on the offer to stay the night at a small inn they hooked him up with, but bright and early the next morning Bakugou caught the bus out of town heading in the direction the woman provided. ‘I’m coming Deku…’

The Persistence of Fate
Summary: Kimera Togo is a vigilante hero operating in the Kansai Region of Japan. After nearly thirty years, the aftermath of the Kamino Incident pulls him back to destiny - back to his former friend and the now-retired Symbol of Peace. Despite his tumultuous origin leading them on diverging paths, he is unable to resist the call to find Toshinori Yagi once again.
This story details the origin of Charlie's BNHA universe origin story and his connection to All Might. It's a bit long, so beware.
Music: Little Pistol - Mother Mother
The sun refused to show its face. In the bleak grayness, it remained hidden behind heavy, foreboding clouds that hovered ominously over the tops of buildings and blanketed the city in darkness before night even fell. The air was thick with humidity, the buzz of insects in the small trees droning absently in the midday. Sun or no, the city had life. Trains rumbled by, causing the ground to vibrate beneath the concrete streets. Cars beeped with indignation and citizens walked by casually, enamored with their own conversations. Never quite paying attention to much beyond themselves and their immediate surroundings.
But who could blame them?
Weeks had passed since the Kamino Incident in Yokohama. Even hours away, in the heart of Kyoto, it was all anyone had spoken of in the days following. Fear had enveloped the city - what would they do without the Symbol of Peace? Without All Might? - and yet life continued as normal. Maybe Yokohama was a little too far away… When was the last time All Might had even shown his face in Kyoto anyway?
The nearest pro-heroes were those at the Fat Gum Agency. Smaller-time heroes drifted in and out of the city here and there… But maybe its disconnection from All Might meant that the fear of the League of Villains had been kept to a minimum… There was no reason for them to come to Kyoto anyway.
...Maybe.
But that didn’t mean that the city was villain-free.
“Fury. We’ve got a report coming in from Minami Ward. There’s been an organized assault near the Katsura River.”
Ears twitching, the crackle of the radio pulled Kimera from his silent reflection. From his position atop one of the city’s temple shrines, the vigilante hero had been keeping an eye on the area. It had been relatively quiet - until now. He’d anticipated emboldened villains to show their faces eventually. Figures, it’d be on one of the gloomiest days of the year thus far.
“Details,” he replied, unmoving from his perch just yet. He’d learned a long time ago to prepare before launching himself into action. A notch in one of his long rabbit-like ears and scars that remained hidden underneath his clothing were stark reminders of the lessons he’d learned in his youth.
“No names are coming up in the database yet, but we’re still pulling. Two villains so far. One power-quirk, one technical quirk. We can provide backup, if needed.”
“Hold for now, but be ready.” Kimera finally shifted his feet, moving from his crouch and hopping across the temple’s slanted roof to the ground below. In the cover of the gloom, he was able to sprint away and out of sight of any curious passerby, his quick steps carrying him in the direction of the Minami Ward. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d taken on two villains at once. He was confident in his abilities, though it had taken him several decades to get to where he was now. And even then… he would need to be cautious. If he ran into any pro-heroes on the way, he’d need to be quick about absconding before the police were called.
“Four kilometers to the south, Fury. Better be quick.”
“Going as fast as I can!” Kimera snapped, a bit forcefully into the radio receiver. He was quick, but he was no damn bullet train. At least not without unleashing some raw power that would be more detrimental than helpful before he could even face the villains.
Before the voice on the other end of his communicator could crackle in his ear again, the rumbling echo of an explosion rocked the ground beneath his feet as he ran. The shockwave sent a spray of water from the river across the ground, bringing Kimera to a halt as he neared the walkway that bordered the river itself. Villain spotted. People ran in panic away from the water’s edge, shouting and hollering as they went. Kimera paid them no mind.
“Hey… It’s the Night Fury!”
He peered to the side as a fleeing tourist pointed out his presence. He would be hard to ignore in the midst of a villain attack, when he was not doing his utmost to remain unseen. With his shiny black scales and blazing orange hair, Kimera was instantly recognizable. Even if he didn’t have his sidekicks with him.
“Get out of here, will you?!” He snarled at the finger-pointer, sharp teeth and glaring green eyes clearly less-than-pleased; an act which made the tourist recoil and continue his escape away from the riverside. The fewer citizens were in the way, the easier it would be for Kimera to leap into action, aiming for the water where another surge of waves announced the presence of the villain that had caused the commotion to begin with.
From the water, the villain emerged, his body rough and sand-paper like as he roared an aggressive challenge. Rows of serrated teeth lined his mouth, a sharp fin jutting from his back. He was large - easily five stories tall. Kimera assumed this was the power-quirk that his sidekick had spoken of. So where was the technical-quirk user?
His question was answered for him as a figure sprung from the shark villain’s back, hurling down and landing with a sickening slap in front of Kimera, cackling with pleasure as it eyed its apparent competition. Kimera slowed to a stop again - taking in the details of the villain’s flat, rippled head making a foul sucking sound with each of the villain’s inhales.
“Huh,” Kimera began with an unimpressed snuff. “Guess calling you a ‘sucker’ is a bit too obvious, hm?”
The villain hissed at him. “I won’t be insssssulted by a man who issssn’t even a real hero! Where are the actual heroes? They too busy to bother with us?!” The suckerfish villain sounded insulted. As if Kimera’s very presence was an attempt at mockery.
Temper flared, the vigilante hero narrowed his gaze at the other, a low, threatening growl churning its way from his chest and up into his throat.
“Man. You’re really gonna wish the pro-heroes were here,” Kimera replied, bracing his large feet underneath him before using them to surge forward in a burst of vicious and feral speed. A pro-hero would hesitate to kill; held back by the law of the land.
The Night Fury had no such qualms.
=====
His parents were unremarkable when they died. Crushed by the rubble of their own home, his mother and father had likely passed away without much pain. Neither of them had been heroes, foregoing the use of their quirks to take on boring, normal office jobs. Someone has to do it, his father had always said. Especially when money was so short.
He’d grown up in a small hovel-like home in Osaka, his quirks manifesting fairly early in his development. Shiny black scales, not dissimilar to his father’s, dotted his arms and legs, the limbs ending in pointed, thick claws. Long rabbit-like ears sprung from the top of his head and swiveled to and fro, mirroring those of his mother’s. Neither had a tail, but Kimera was blessed with the strong appendage to round off his quirk. His mother had affectionately called him a hodge-podge of animal quirks, and he figured that was fairly true. All he knew is that he had the blazing orange hair that was typical from his father’s family tree and the green eyes that his mother was known for. A hodge-podge of many things.
Togo Kimera had not been allowed to go to school. As soon as he could walk and talk, his mother and father had tasked him with managing their small side business: selling small bundles of flowers which they grew in their free time in the small window boxes that lined their ramshackle home. He knew his parents wanted better… but if they were to keep their home, it was the sacrifice they all had to make. Even now, Kimera found it hard to resent their decision.
He was twelve when an evening was interrupted by chaos and calamity, the Kimera family caught woefully unprepared. Their home was shattered by a rampaging villain, showering them with sharp and heavy debris and burying them like a tomb. His parents had gone swiftly, but Togo had been simply trapped, his limbs snared underneath him and panic gripping his senses until fear left him silent and unconscious.
Kimera emerged from the rubble two days later; thin, dehydrated, and terrified. The pro-heroes had come and gone, leaving him behind. It hadn’t been until he was cornered by a concerned stranger who informed him of the events that he realized that his home - and his parents - were gone for good. Before he could be escorted to the police, the young, fearful boy bolted down the street and into hiding, surviving on water from the Yodo river and stolen food from street vendors where he could find them. He refused to be taken to the police; frustrated with the knowledge that they would simply place him in a strange home with strange people. Or even worse… in a place where there were even more kids with sad stories like his own.
He didn’t want to hear it.
He was fourteen when he decided to leave Osaka, venturing to the north and towards Tokyo. Kimera knew that very few opportunities existed for a homeless teenager in the city… but he was tired of walking in the shadow his parents left behind. Tired of being sad and dejected… tired of simply being. Something beyond the sun called him - and so he went.
Exhaustion stopped him along the way. Lacking a map or any real sense of direction, Kimera found himself lost in the Shizuoka Prefecture, wandering tiredly and almost aimlessly. Man up, he told himself. But that did little to curb his waning energy or fill his belly with a substantial meal. Frustrated and tired, the boy curled up on a bench along the sea-side, the sound of the waves in the dark distance acting as his lullaby.
The sound of voices in the near distance woke him. The sun had barely peered over the edge of the horizon as his eyes fluttered open and he lifted his head, staring down the beach. He was still tired. And still hungry. But he remained where he was for a moment, allowing the sleep to clear from his eyes as figures strolled down the sand in his direction. Ears twitching, he sat himself up and listened.
“You really think the exam’s gonna be that hard? I haven’t studied at all!”
“Of course, stupid! They have to be hard. Otherwise anyone could graduate from U.A. It’s prestigious for a reason!”
Kimera snuffed in realization. They were students. High school students, by the look of them. Uneducated as he was, he wasn’t stupid. He remembered seeing other kids coming to and from school as he stood on the street corners with his baskets of flowers. He’d still learned to read and write, though his parents had been mediocre teachers. But he’d never heard of U.A. Prestigious? What did that mean?
Turning his gaze away as the strange students passed him, he kept watching them as they walked away, ears trained on their conversation. It was morning, wasn’t it…? So they were going to school?
The shaggy-haired boy opted to chase his curiosity, allowed the students to get a significant lead before he hopped off the bench and followed them. He wondered what high school was like, what having friends like these students was like, what having nice clothes and backpacks was like. He was well practiced at staying out of the eye of the general public, having lived on the street for well over two years now. And by the time the students arrived at the gates of the school, Kimera had pulled back a bit, ensuring that he wasn’t seen. There were students milling back and forth, chatting and laughing, sharing stories, and exchanging fake air-punches with one another. Like they were fighting.
Prestigious… Kimera rolled the word around in his brain for a few moments. He’d heard it before. When his mother spent evenings huddled with her tiny television in her room. Prestigious high schools were often established for kids with powerful quirks. To train them to be heroes, she’d said.
Can I be a hero too? He’d asked her one day as he sat next to her alongside the street, flowers nestled in his basket. He remembered that she’d pat him on the head and had said nothing. Thinking back on it… maybe that had been her way of telling him that he was not meant for that life. Thinking even more, he recalled seeing the pro-heroes that had defeated the villain that had destroyed his house. They spoke on the TV about how difficult the villain had been, but that rescue efforts had deemed it to be a low-casualty event.
A churning feeling of bitterness bubbled in his throat before he swallowed it back. It had been the villain’s fault, not the heroes. Still… they had seemed so casual...
“Hey, wanna share this sweet roll I picked up on the way? Don’t think I could eat the whole thing.”
The voice drifted towards him from the throng of students, his attention zeroing in on that sweet roll as his stomach gurgled angrily at him. He hadn’t eaten in a good while - almost two days, in fact. He’d long since learned to curb his hunger when it got bad… But seeing such a delectable treat being held up and brandished so openly…
Without thinking, Kimera abandoned his hiding spot, creeping towards the students which had been lingering behind the others that had already entered the school’s gates. A sudden ravenous urge to eat spurred him forward, stalking them with predator-like intent before the boy lunged.
With a snap of his sharp teeth and a possessive growl, Kimera leapt and snatched the sweet roll from the student that had been offering it to another, causing the boy to cry out in surprise.
“What the hell?!” He said as Kimera landed, sweet roll in mouth, and bolted lightning-fast back to his hiding spot. Part of him knew that he looked less like a boy and more like a greedy street dog, but his stomach didn’t seem to care. He’d gotten away with his prize and, with relish, devoured it once he was certain that the student hadn’t come after him. It was big enough to fill him up for a whole day! And he’d never had anything that sweet or delectable.
When he was full, Kimera allowed the most fiendish idea to cross his mind. If U.A. was full of students like this… coming to and fro… no doubt, their backpacks FULL of other goodies… then possibly…
Yes, he decided. He’d stick around for a while.
---
Kimera took advantage of his quirk - his quick and stealthy movement and keen senses - to keep up his routine thievery. He never took money… only food. To him, that made it less of a crime. It was a stupid distinction to make, but to a lonely, hungry teenage boy, it was all he could do to make sense of his situation.
He had begun to think that he’d get away with his trick in perpetuity, but it was not to be. One day he knew he’d pick the wrong target. And he knew it the instant the student turned on him, using strong arms to put Kimera in a head-lock before the boy could abscond with the boxed lunch he’d been trying to nab.
“Not so fast!” The student said, keeping a strong hold on Kimera as he squirmed and thrashed, trying to escape his captor’s grip.
“Let me GO!” Kimera hissed, dropping the box and scrabbling at the other with his claws. The other boy was much larger than he was, and older too, though not by much. Still, there weren’t many people who could manage to withstand one of the boy’s vicious bites. He resorted to his teeth, latching them in the student’s skin before he was released. Kimera didn’t wait to make a hasty escape, though he didn’t anticipate being chased.
“I just want to TALK!” The student called to him as he ran. Talk?! Why?! Kimera ignored the other boy’s pleas, but he was not an endurance runner. Despite his petty pilfering, he still ate poorly and much less than he should have. His legs hollered at him in their exhaustion until he was certain they would give out. It was only then that Kimera knew his only option was to turn and try and be threatening to scare the other off. It was clear that he could be outrun.
So he swiveled, turning on his heel to face the other in the middle of the small side street. Like a feral animal, he growled, the sharp spines along the back of his neck bristled in alarm and fearful aggression.
“Leave me alone!” Kimera snapped, his tail thrashing from side to side in agitation as the student approached, hands out as though he was trying to be placating. But Kimera knew better… he had grown suspicious in his days alone. Wary of strangers, he didn’t want to talk to anyone.
“I just wanted to apologize,” the other boy said, eventually stopping short of where Kimera stood and maintaining a distance between them. “You’ve been taking everyone’s food these last few weeks and I wanted to figure out why. Everyone’s kind of upset, you know.”
Apologize? Kimera squinted at the boy, his yellow hair framed in the light of the sun behind him. It was too bright out here. Kimera was used to the dark. And it was hard to make out the boy’s features.
“...I was hungry.” He kept his sentences short. He didn’t want to give anything more away than he needed to.
“Are you… a student around here?”
“No.”
“So… where are you from?”
Kimera didn’t understand why this all mattered. And he was still too tired to keep running. So he exhaled in an agitated huff.
“Osaka.”
“What’s your name?”
A bit of the tension in his shoulders released as his body began to decompress with the realization that he was no longer in panic-mode. But he was still skeptical.
“...Kimera,” he answered, his tail curling around him defensively. He almost jumped when the other boy took a few more steps forward and offered his hand cheerfully. It was only then that Kimera could see his face properly, his bright blue eyes and blazing golden hair seeming ethereal in the glow of the sunlight.
“Well Kimera,” the boy said with a grin. “My name is Toshinori.”
Kimera stared at the offered hand, confused by the boy’s invitation to shake it.
“Let me buy you some food!”
---
Scared as he had been, Kimera was not one to turn down food. Toshinori had been generous, reassuring the boy that he would not turn him in for his food stealing and treating him to a relatively large and hearty meal at a local shop that seemed baffled about the state of Kimera’s thin, frail body.
He couldn’t remember the last time he’d eaten so much. Not in his whole life. It made him pleasantly sleepy, but he had been unable to escape further probing by the older U.A. student who was curious about where he’d come from and why he was hovering around the school.
“Was just like I told you… I was hungry,” Kimera had said truthfully. He’d been on his own for some time, he’d told Toshinori, though he resented the pity he knew lingered under the surface of Toshinori’s gaze. “I came from Osaka thinking that maybe there was more in Tokyo… maybe I could get a job or something… But I guess I didn’t make it that far.”
Kimera admitted that his family had long-since passed away, left to his own devices after his home was destroyed. Toshinori listened, his eyes somber as he did so.
“Did you not ever think of becoming a hero instead?” Toshinori had asked, clearly confused as to why that had not been presented as an option. But Kimera looked at him skeptically, answering in little more than a scoff.
“Kids like me don’t become heroes. Kids like you do. Going to that fancy school and all. That’s what you go there for, right? I heard some other kids talking about your exams and stuff.”
Toshinori nodded, explaining that U.A. had some of the best and brightest - that it was where all the pro-heroes went before they were great. Most of what he said sailed right over Kimera’s head. He didn’t know how a school could be so special, but then again, he’d never even set foot in one. Their experiences were so different…
“So…” Toshinori began when the day began to turn to night. Kimera had noticed that the boy had seemed to skip some of his classes… But he said nothing about it. Maybe he was old enough to do that. “Do you have somewhere to go? Other places to get food that doesn’t involve maybe… getting heroes in training upset? Someone meaner than me might nab you eventually.” He grinned a little sheepishly, as if apologizing for their earlier wrestling match.
Kimera scratched at one of his long ears, hesitant to admit that he had nothing of the sort.
“I have somewhere to sleep,” he lied. “It’s just food that’s hard to find.” Couldn’t lie about that. Toshinori had already caught him stealing it.
Toshinori seemed to think, silent for a few moments before he smiled again, setting a hand down on the table between them with enthusiasm.
“How about this! You come meet me after school tomorrow. I’ll bring you food if you tell me more about that quirk of yours.”
Kimera blinked. “My quirk…? Why do you wanna know about it?”
“I’m a hero in training. It makes sense to learn as much about different fighting styles to make sure I know how to handle each one. It’ll give me a leg up in my studies - it’s a mutual trade-off! How about it?”
The justification seemed shaky. It was only later that he would realize that this was Toshinori’s way of checking up on the younger boy. And keeping him out of trouble. But Kimera didn’t understand that as he stared at Toshinori’s smile and excited hand gestures.
On the other hand… free food was free food…
“...Alright. But… just make sure no other kids are around. I don’t need them knowing I’m still hanging around,” Kimera eventually agreed. As long as he could stay out of trouble, get a free meal, and be okay with sleeping on a bench or in the train station somewhere, he could manage to show Toshinori a thing or two about his quirk.
If only he’d realized that his hesitant agreement that day would change his life.
---
In the weeks that followed, Kimera realized that the pity that had been in Toshinori’s eyes on the day they’d met had all but vanished. With regular meals, Kimera had been steadily putting on weight, the life in his limbs filling him with energy that he hadn’t felt since he was tiny. He no longer felt inclined to nab food, even if places to sleep were still hard to come by. He had yet to tell Toshinori about his home situation… but part of him didn’t want to. What they had was good. He didn’t need to make it more complex.
As Toshinori learned more about Kimera’s quirk and his abilities, the shaggy-haired boy realized that Toshinori was a wealth of knowledge. About U.A., about quirks, about fighting, and especially about becoming a pro-hero. It was a whole world that he hadn’t known existed. Heroes fighting villains before there were casualties. Heroes running agencies with others who were just as intent on protecting innocent lives before they could be ruined. Powerful heroes and fast heroes and all-encompassing, grand heroes. Toshinori told him story after story, showed him fighting moves and revealed a dense history that Kimera knew he would have never been exposed to in Osaka.
Maybe… just maybe… he could become a hero too.
But he was not like Toshinori - or “Toshi,” as Kimera had begun to call him. (It was an improper nickname, but Kimera was unaware of enough formalities that Toshinori didn’t seem bothered.) Toshi was powerful and strong. He had a body that could send villains flying; fists that could put fear into the hearts of even the most villainous individuals. Conversely… Kimera, though healthier, was still thin and wiry. He was built for speed and stealth… Not for power.
“...Will you teach me how to be stronger?” He asked one day as Toshi sat next to him on the beach, their attention focused on the waves reflecting the sunset in the distance. “Will you teach me how I can use my quirk like you use yours?”
Toshinori grinned at him, enthused by the question. “You wanna become a hero, huh?” Kimera knew it was unlikely… he did not go to a hero school. Or a school at all. And from what Toshi had told him, it was a rough road paved with red tape. But surely, it wouldn’t be impossible… would it? Toshi didn’t seem to think so.
“...Yeah,” Kimera replied with a nod and a look of determination. His parents had missed their chance… Kimera didn’t want to.
Toshinori stood, flexing his muscles and giving Kimera a thumbs up. Even if Toshinori was still learning himself… surely, there was something that he could teach Kimera. And the hybrid boy knew that he would have to take advantage of that while he could. Toshi was graduating soon, he’d said. They’d have to make the most of their time.
“Let’s do it.”
Their training sessions began after Toshi had completed his lessons for the day. They’d meet not far from the school and trek down to the beach park. It was an open space and gave them plenty of room to move about without drawing too much unnecessary attention. Kimera would keep an eye out for strangers. If anyone saw Toshi using his quirk outside of the school, he’d said, he’d get in trouble. And so Kimera had agreed to keep it a secret.
Together, they began to hone their abilities. Weeks turned to months, the two becoming fast friends as they exchanged quick attacks and practiced their defenses. Toshinori grew stronger with each passing day, his punches being delivered with heft and power. Kimera knew that whoever his mentor was must have been teaching him well, even if the other boy came to their sessions looking worn out to begin with. Kimera appreciated that he never missed their time together.
But as Toshinori grew, so did Kimera. His teeth were sharper and claws stronger. His tail was a powerful limb which could deliver a painful whip and slap, and his feet carried him faster and farther with precise leaps. He learned quickly, taking advantage of his speed to dart around Toshinori with confidence and accuracy, diving in for hits where he could get them. He knew Toshi could take whatever he delivered with enthusiasm, even if the both of them left their training sessions with fresh bruises and heavy limbs. Toshinori would always smile. It made Kimera’s heart thump happily to see his smile.
His first friend. His only friend. With Toshi guiding him, he knew that he could handle anything.
Maybe I can become even stronger than Toshi, Kimera thought one day as they cooled off in the evening air after a particularly rough training session. He was delightfully unaware of any limits that Toshi had on his own abilities, but he himself would ensure that he never put too deep of a wound on the other, lest they have to stop their sessions because someone became suspicious. I would need to come up with a move that he wouldn’t expect… something… fast and sharp. He’s quick, but he relies more on his strength than anything… I bet I could catch him off guard. The thought settled in his mind. Tired as he was from their time together, he knew he had enough spare energy - now that he was well fed and growing every day - to put just a little extra time in training alone.
I’ll train while Toshi is in school. Then I’ll really surprise him!
When Toshinori’s classes kept him busy, Kimera kept to himself, working to increase his speed and the strength of his teeth and claws. But it wasn’t until he saw a pro-hero on the streets of Yoshida deliver a devastating slashing attack with his quirk that he realized… he could do the same thing. But with a spin!
A literal spin, as it turned out, was just what Kimera needed. By running at a full-tilt and wild speed, he could get enough momentum to tuck into a vicious roll and spiral towards his opponent like a saw blade, mouth agape and claws spread to get a surprise and lightning fast strike on them. One that was sure to give him an advantage.
He practiced on trees, at first. Glancing blows off of them and throwing himself painfully to the ground or against another tree in the process. Aiming himself once he was in the spin was hard. Aiming after he shattered the bark of the tree and ricocheted off of it was even harder. But his hits were doing damage. And he was impressed with his progress, even if he was struggling with accuracy.
Toshi won’t know what hit him!
Kimera kept the secret move to himself for several days, practicing in between his sessions with Toshinori to ensure that he was able to effectively pull it off without it totally taking himself out for the count.
“I want to show you something I’ve been working on!” He said when he finally felt as though he was ready. Finally, he could show Toshinori that their training had been paying off. He could be better. He could be strong and powerful. Just like Toshi was. And he’d prove that being a hero was possible; even for someone like him.
“Lay it on me!” Toshi prompted once they were positioned on opposite ends of the beach as they usually were. Ready for one or the other to launch an offensive attack from which the other would defend. Then they would continue until night fell and exhaustion settled in their limbs. But not today. Today, Kimera was going to start strong.
“Get ready!”
Kimera got his hind feet underneath him, legs bracing tightly before he sprang forward, rushing at Toshinori like a hungry cheetah in a burst of speed. He could see the grin on Toshi’s face as he ran, pride in his gaze at Kimera’s progress. The two had really grown together. Their hard work would pay off.
At his top speed, Kimera tucked into his roll, spiraling wildly towards Toshinori.
It was far too late before the boy realized in a panic that he was out of control. He hadn’t had time to perfect his aim - nor did he truly know how strong he’d gotten. Before he could tuck his claws to ensure that they didn’t do damage, he felt them snag flesh and pull, making contact with Toshinori’s last-second attempt at defending himself. The spinning blade that was Kimera had caught Toshi’s arm, collar-bone, and shoulder, tearing viciously at the skin and showering the sand beneath their feet with blood.
Kimera bounced off of Toshinori and soared into the water, hitting the surface with a loud and painful slap as he slowed and sank beneath the waves. His limbs screamed in pain with the impact, unable to move for a few moments before he could muster up enough effort to get himself above the water where he coughed and sputtered. On the shore, he saw Toshinori rooted to the spot, unmoving, until he toppled over and onto the sand.
“Toshinori!” Kimera cried out, gagging as water flooded into his mouth. Panicked, he struggled to make his way back to shore, finally reaching the shallows where he hacked up another mouthful of water before staggering to where Toshinori lay on the ground, clearly unconscious.
Is he… Is he dead?!
Heart pounding in his chest, Kimera felt tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. The blood he’d torn from Toshinori was absolutely coating the sand around him, the jagged and torn gashes in his flesh exposing muscle and bone where Kimera’s claws had raked them.
“Toshi! Toshinori!” He called, reaching to shake the older boy with vigor to try and get him to come around. But with each movement, Toshinori lost more blood. Moving him would do no good.
From somewhere nearby, he heard a voice, his ear swiveling to catch the words.
“I saw it!” The voice cried. “That boy attacked the other one!”
Wait… Wait, wait… no!
“N-no, I-! I didn’t…!” Kimera yelled back, rising to his feet and looking around in alarm. The voice of the stranger who had pointed him out was not the only one that was ringing in his peripheral. Now more and more strangers were approaching, brought around by the commotion of his and Toshinori’s collision, the sounds of horror at the sight of Toshinori’s unconscious body echoing in Kimera’s ears.
“Somebody call the police!” One voice said. “It’s a villain attack!” Hollered another.
Kimera’s voice was drowned out as he heard the sounds of sirens in the distance. They’d come for him! The people really thought that Toshi had been attacked!
Tears ran down Kimera’s face as he glanced at Toshinori. He wasn’t dead… He was alive. They would… they would help him. They would get him somewhere safe. But would they listen to a raggedy hybrid of a boy when he claimed that he had done nothing wrong?
No, he decided. They wouldn’t. Not with all that damage. Not with all that blood. Not when he hadn’t been smart or strong enough to control himself. Not when he had been unable to make Toshinori proud like he wanted to.
“I’m so sorry, Toshi!” Kimera sobbed. But he had no more time. With one last look at his friend’s unconscious form, the boy ran. Before the police could track and follow him. Before the heroes came after him like he was a villain.
Maybe I am, he thought as he ran.
As he disappeared down the beach and into hiding, he knew that it was the last time he’d be able to face Toshinori Yagi.
---
Toshinori recovered, though he remembered very little about what had happened. He was chastised by his mentor for sparring outside of the school grounds, harangued by the police about the identity of the mysterious chimera boy who had injured him, and questioned by his friends about the events of that day.
When he was able to, Toshinori had returned to the beach, hoping to meet Kimera - hoping to meet his friend. And yet, Kimera Togo was nowhere to be found. Even as Toshinori returned for several evenings after he’d recovered. Hoping. Waiting. Kimera did not appear.
Toshinori stopped appearing as his graduation from U.A. ventured closer. And once he was able to do so, he set off for America, and returned as “All Might”. The up and coming pro-hero. The powerful, unstoppable “Symbol of Peace.”
From the streets of the Kansai region where Kimera returned, the boy watching Toshinori… “All Might’s” rise to fame. He’d cut his hair as soon as he could, lest he be recognized as the boy who’d attacked the fledgling hero. His limbs had grown strong, though he was still thin and sleek, much more accustomed to speed than strength. But his power was nothing to sneeze at either.
In Toshinori’s absence, Kimera had come to the realization that he could never be a pro-hero. His upbringing was far too tumultuous, and with his lack of education and the fact that he’d simply left Toshinori there to bleed…
He didn’t deserve the title.
But his power was wasted, if he couldn’t help people. So he admitted that he could do that, at the very least. He didn’t need to be licensed or registered or whatever the hell else pro-heroes needed to prove that they were “allowed” to do good. He could still help others. He could still make amends for what he’d done.
The life of a vigilante was not an easy one. But it was a life. He made enough money under the table to get by, amassing a small number of others who shared his ideals. None of them shone as bright as Toshinori had. None of them could match his enthusiasm or his smile. But he could still call them friends, after enough time had passed. It was easy to attract quirkless others who felt that they were not empowered - not prepared or able to make a difference in a world full of evil villains. Not when pro-heroes existed.
“You can,” Kimera told them when he met them. When he was certain where their hearts lay. “You can make a difference. All you have to do is commit to it.”
With his small following of quirkless sidekicks, he would train them. To recognize danger and respond to it; to alert him of citizens in need of help. To use their own talents, gadgets, and abilities to help protect those who couldn’t protect themselves.
His alias came naturally. Working in the cover of night, Kimera often attacked villains without warning and without caution. His vicious, aggressive fighting style was to be feared, as his sidekicks often said. He didn’t bother capturing villains if he found them to be too dangerous. He’d long since abandoned his desire to obey the bureaucracy.
By the time he was forty, the Night Fury had a body count. He was not proud of it. But it was what had to be done. Sometimes, he ruled, villains could not be allowed to live.
Still… he longed for the days of his naivety. When he sparred with Toshinori and they dreamed of bigger things. When he could lose himself in the light of Toshinori’s eyes and know that the world would be safe if he was in it. Watching All Might on the TV… he knew that the man’s macho persona was not his true self. Handsome as he was, Kimera remembered him so differently…
Their paths had diverged, and yet whenever he caught a glimpse of Toshinori in the limelight, he couldn’t help but wonder…
Would I have made you proud?
===
During the Kamino incident, Kimera had fought the inner part of himself that screamed and railed against what he was seeing on the TV. He’d stopped, like the whole country had, to watch All Might put an end to the heinous villain that had decimated the ward and taken so many lives along with him. The League of Villains was in everyone’s mouths… The battle seemed impossible.
But when the world hollered and cheered for All Might as he raised his fist in the air and announced his victory, Kimera could only watch in horror. Toshinori had given his all… he was so damaged. So frail. After decades of his belief that nothing could shatter the man’s ability to persist… something had.
His heart lurched moment after moment, until the crowd had dispersed and Kimera was left to stare at replayed highlights of the battle over and over again.
Toshinori… He thought, fighting tears. I should have been there. I should have been able to be by your side. I should have… I should have…
But he couldn’t turn back the passage of time. And in the following weeks, the only thing he’d been able to think about was Toshinori. Where was he? Was he okay? Was he recovering? How could he carry on, knowing that he was unable to fight? Did he… have a family now?
Does he even remember me?
The thoughts plagued him like a hive of angry bees. It had been decades. Surely, Toshinori… All Might… wouldn’t have thought twice about Kimera in years.
But even as he lurched himself at the villain that had taken over the Katsura River, Toshinori lingered in the back of his mind.
I need to see him.
If there were a record for the fastest time he’d ever taken down a villain, it would be then, when the realization that the aching in his chest wouldn’t subside until he saw Toshinori in the flesh hit him like a ton of bricks. He savagely slashed at the suckerfish villain, rendering him immobile and knocking him unconscious with a swift rabbit-kick to the head. Gripping the suckerfish by his arm, Kimera threw him back at the shark villain that waited in the water, the two colliding painfully. Kimera wasted no time in following up, launching himself in the air towards the water with a burst of speed.
He tucked into his roll - his ultimate move which he’d perfected since its devastating use on Toshinori - and tore through the air, slicing through the shark villain’s gills and sprayed the water with blood as it collapsed into the torrent of waves. He probably wasn’t dead. But he would be out for the count, at least, until the police or pro-heroes could come and mop him up and out of the river.
Kimera, riding the ricochet of his contact with the villain, landed squarely on dry land, satisfied with his work. Those two would likely not return. And he had to get going if he wanted to get to U.A. by morning.
“Harada,” Kimera said into his communicator, listening as the crackle of the line announced that his sidekick had been listening.
“Go ahead.”
“I’m going to Yokohama. I want to figure out what went on in Kamino.”
“Now?! It’s a bit late for investigating.”
“I just have to see it for myself. Can you handle things in the meantime?”
There was a sigh. And then a response.
“Fine. Be careful.”
With that ‘blessing’, Kimera took off. He didn’t need to go as far as Yokohama. But he didn’t need his sidekicks to know what he was really doing either.
If I can just see Toshinori… That’s all I need.
---
They hadn’t lied when they’d said that U.A.’s security had been enhanced. As Kimera hovered nearby, he realized that if he’d tried to steal student snacks now, he’d certainly never get away with it. Absently, he wondered about the students within. From what he knew, they had been through so much…
He was older now, grizzled and aged, but no less strong. As he eyed the walkway that lead up to the gates, he pictured himself and Toshinori; being caught in a headlock as he tried to make off with a stolen lunch. The image in his head almost made him laugh. God… it had been so long.
He’d be a fool now to try and get anywhere near the school, so he kept his distance. He knew Toshinori was a teacher now. So he would have to be around eventually… But for now, he made his way towards the same beach while night had yet to become morning. Where he and Toshinori had often trained.
Where he’d… left Toshi’s bleeding body.
Kimera closed his eyes and tried to shake the memory from his mind. No, he didn’t need to remember that. He could focus on the good things. On the laughing and the friendly conversation. On the shared meals and the evenings spend with one another.
Of Toshinori’s smile…
“...Woah! You’re the Night Fury! Kimera Togo!”
Alarm shot through him as the young voice sounded over his shoulder. Kimera whirled around, teeth bared and scales bristling as he waited to be assaulted, but he was met instead by the face of a young boy. His messy, unkempt hair matched his gaze of wonder as he stared Kimera down. And had it not been for the bandages wrapped around his arms, Kimera might not have recognized him.
Izuku Midoriya. The boy from the sports festival… He thought. A U.A. student. He’d been there during the incident at Kamino too. Saving his classmate. And now he was… here. On the beach. Staring at him as though he’d grown two heads.
“...Keep your voice down, kid!” Kimera hissed when he realized he’d just been identified. It was still night, so he didn’t anticipate others being too close by… But he’d been wrong before. “Shouldn’t you be in bed or something?”
“Well… I was… meeting someone… But shouldn’t you be in Kyoto?” Midoriya asked, confused.
“I’m on an extended visit. Don’t worry about it.” Kimera didn’t need the third degree from a kid, no matter how freaky strong he was. “Why are you meeting someone in the dead of night??”
“Uh! Well! It’s…! A long story, actually! I was... Um!” The boy began to sputter, waving his arms around in a bit of a panic. Kimera stared at him dully. Kids.
“...Kimera…?”
Another voice startled him, making his ears twitch in instinctive delight. He knew this voice… As if it was acting of its own volition, he felt his heart begin to race, his limbs shaking as he turned to face who he knew was standing there. Staring at him.
Toshinori.
“Kimera… is it really you?”
All Might’s gaze was locked onto Kimera, taken aback and disbelieving. Kimera could only stare back, his own hard green eyes meeting the other man’s stark and bright blue. Even with all of the damage he’d taken… even though his body had been destroyed beyond reason… those eyes…
They hadn’t changed.
He was finding it very hard to breathe, his attention entirely taken from the young Midoriya and locked onto Toshinori’s gaze.
“...Yeah,” he finally managed to get out, his voice trembling.
“It’s me.”

Nearly 100 years after the “unresolved trauma” of the slaughter of thousands of Koreans in japan in the aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake, an ethnic Korean director is to make his third documentary on the subject.Oh Choong-kong is a second-generation Korean who was born in Tokyo but now lives in Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture. He made two documentaries in the 1980s about the killing of as many as 10,000 Koreans in and around the Japanese capital after the natural disaster, which claimed an estimated 120,000 lives.
More than 30 years later, however, 62-year-old Oh feels he has to make a third film to ensure the events of 1923 are not forgotten and that history is not glossed over.
“I feel the tragedy of the massacre again when I hear hate speech – such as ‘kill Koreans’ – in Japan again today,” Oh said. “That racism is still there and I want to bring together the knowledge of researchers looking into this incident with the voices of Korean residents of Japan who are working to make sure this is not forgotten and, at the same time, to make equally sure that it is not repeated.”
The Great Kanto Earthquake struck a little over one minute before midday on September 1, 1923, with its epicentre in Sagami Bay. The megathrust tremor had a magnitude of 7.9, triggered a tsunami that reached a maximum height of 12 metres and lasted, according to some accounts, as long as 10 minutes.
The quake devastated Tokyo and the port of Yokohama to the south, as well as the surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka. The damage was exacerbated by the number of major fires that broke out – most caused by cooking stoves being toppled – and there are stories of people being burned alive as they fled because their feet sank into the melted tar of roads.
Even after the last fires were put out two days later and the aftershocks tapered off, the horror of the disaster was not over for foreigners living in the region.
The government declared martial law and ordered local police forces to make maintaining order and security their top priority. Within hours, however, rumours were spreading that Korean residents were taking advantage of the tragedy to commit arson, loot damaged properties and poison drinking wells.
Even newspapers reported the rumours, driving the vigilantes into a frenzy.
Responding to the unsubstantiated rumours, mobs seized Koreans living in Tokyo and Yokohama and killed hundreds, while soldiers and police officers took part in the killings. The government later estimated that 231 Koreans died at the hands of roving gangs in the first week of September 1923.
Independent reports – and the Korean community – put the figure far higher, although a precise figure will never be known.
Oh embarked upon his first documentary in 1983 while studying at a film school in Yokohama, working with a Japanese classmate to produce Hidden Scars: The massacre of Koreans from the Arakawa river bank to Shitamachi in Tokyo.
The narrative was based on testimonies from Koreans who survived the attacks, including Jo In-seung, who was set upon by firefighters on the banks of the Arakawa in Tokyo. Jo sustained serious injuries when he was stabbed in the leg with a fire hook and recounted his memories of other Koreans being killed.
Part of the story focused on excavations alongside the river in a search for human remains after the bodies had been cremated, Oh said.
Sensing that the entire story had not been told, Oh produced a second film, The Disposed-Of Koreans: The Great Kanto Earthquake and Camp Narashino, in 1986.
The military encampment at Narashino, in Chiba Prefecture, was the scene of one of the worst atrocities of the slaughter. Some 3,000 Koreans were taken into protective custody at the base, but as many as 1,000 died at the hands of the military or after being forced to leave its confines, effectively delivering them into the hands of the lynch mobs.
Oh said he became convinced to make a third film after meeting Park Boon-soon, the widow of Jo In-seung, shortly before her death in 2014.
The dwindling number of survivors of the atrocities has made his research far more difficult, Oh concedes, but he has been assisted by the release of documents listing around 300 previously unknown victims that were discovered in South Korea in 2013. Japanese citizens’ groups have also provided help with tracing survivors in Japan.
One of the people he was able to locate is Kang Gwang-ho, the grandson of Kang Dae-heun, who died on September 4, 1923, at the age of 24. Kang was attacked in the village of Katayanagi, in Saitama Prefecture, by a mob armed with spears and swords.
The assailants were later put on trial, during which it was learned that the local government had issued orders for municipal officials to take steps to defend local residents. The order had not, however, dispelled the rumours of crimes committed by Koreans.
“This was a slaughter committed against members of Japan’s colonies here in Japan and clearly a violation of international law,” Oh said. “Yet the Japanese government is still not being completely open about the issue. That means this is an open historical tragedy and an unresolved trauma for all Koreans.”

Countries & Regions / French
1. Current Job Description
I am working as a system consultant for a financial software company in Tokyo. I like my current job because I can utilize my knowledge and education I have gained over the years. There are so many French colleagues; actually half of the employees are French. The official language in the company is English.
I started the job a year and a half ago. The remote working policy is very convenient for me because I only need to go only once or twice a week to the office depending on the coronavirus situation. Compared to life in Tokyo, there is no rush hour and it is very comfortable. I can take the bullet train from Atami, so I can read a book or to listen to music at my leisure. The office is conveniently located near Tokyo Station, and the commute time is about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
I would be happy if I could keep on working several days a week at home after the coronavirus situation gets better, so that I can keep living in Izu.

2. The reason you choose to live in Shizuoka
I am originally from LILLE, in the north of France near Belgium. I came to Japan about 11 years ago, to work as a researcher at the University of Tokyo. While in France, I was interested in the Japanese culture; I was learning Aikido, for example.
I came to Ito city about 5 years ago to work for my father-in-law's company, an apartment rental business. Although my salary decreased a little bit, I was happy to go back to countryside after about 15 years living in big cities, such as Paris, Vancouver, and Tokyo. Main reason for accepting my father-in-law’s proposition was because we got a 2nd kid and it was difficult to live in Tokyo raising two kids with a small salary. Real estate prices in Shizuoka are much cheaper than Tokyo, and it has a better environment. It is easier to get into a nursery school and raise children as well.
I was also happy that my kids would grow up in the countryside. Now that my father-in-law's work has settled down, I am working for a company in Tokyo that was introduced to me by an acquaintance.
My first impressions of Shizuoka were very positive; It has abundant beautiful nature, such as sea, mountains , onsen(hot springs), etc.
Tumblr media
3. Life in Shizuoka
Shizuoka has a lot of fascination; good air, deep silence, forests, birds, dark sky at night and the possibility to go somewhere outside with kids during sunny weekends. There are especially some nice and free parks for kids like Komuro-yama in Ito, Citizens' Forest Ukihashi in Izunokuni, beach in Kawazu, or onsen. Actually I often go to the sea and onsen, with my kids, about once or twice a month, because they are about ten minutes’ walk from my house.
Tumblr media
4.Message
Since I work remotely, I am able to work in a place with abundant nature, which is very comfortable. Compared to urban areas such as Tokyo, there are fewer stores and restaurants in Shizuoka and it is sometimes inconvenient without a car; however, I prefer Shizuoka to a big city since I grew up in the countryside. If you want and have the possibility to get out from a big city to live in the countryside, you should give it a try, especially if you have kids!

Falling Skies
Tumblr media
Thank you for coming, everyone. I have news for you all.
Tumblr media
I have managed to recover data from the corrupted file.
Tumblr media
Really? That’s great, Kiibo! Now we can finally figure something out.
Tumblr media
Indeed. Well, done Kiibo-san.
Tumblr media
Well...don’t congratulate me just yet.
Tumblr media
Huh? What do you mean?
Tumblr media
Someone left their porn in the logs?
Tumblr media
No, nothing like that.
Tumblr media
I think it would be easier if I just showed you. What I recovered was a transmission from Earth.
Tumblr media
Like a message for us?
Tumblr media
No. A television broadcast. I’m going to ask that you all brace yourselves for what I’m about to show you.
Tumblr media
....
Tumblr media
“What you’re seeing right now is live footage from our camera at the scene!”
“You can clearly see the meteors raining down! We are witnessing what looks like the end of the world! This is not a movie! I repeat, this is NOT a movie! This is live, unedited footage! This is real! The sky is falling before our very eyes!”
“We’ve just been notified that the government has officially declared a state of emergency! Subway stations have been opened as shelters! The government is instructing all citizens to remain calm and evacuate to their nearest shelter!”
“Children and invalids are to be given first priori-”
:KVVRRT:
Tumblr media
And...that’s it. It cuts off there.
Tumblr media
Wh....what?
Tumblr media
...I....I remember....
Tumblr media
What’s happening out there?!
JAXA scientist 1: We’ve got projectiles breaching the atmosphere from Alaska down to Greater Indonesia, west to China!
JAXA scientist 2: My screens are full!
JAXA scientist 3: Shit! They’re all over the place!
Tumblr media
Goddammit. What should we do?
JAXA scientist 2: We’ve got incoming! It’s coming right for us!
Tumblr media
Huh?!
Tumblr media
*An explosion rocks the entire building. Every window explodes*
Tumblr media
As do...I...
Secret Service 1: Mr. Prime Minister, we need to get to the bunker!
Prime Minister: I’m coming, I’m coming!
Tumblr media
Please, we must hurry!
Prime Minister: What’s the problem!?
Tumblr media
There are projectiles en route to this location. We need to get you out of here.
Prime Minister: ...who’s it from? The Chinese?
Secret Service 2: Not certain, although the trajectory suggests otherwise.
Prime Minister: Alright.
*The group heads downstairs*
Secret Service 2: Impacts have already been confirmed in Iwate, Miyaki, Fukushima, Niigata, and Gunma.
Prime Minister: Is it anything like what happened in Shizuoka?
Secret Service 2: Quite possibly.
*The entire building suddenly shakes*
Prime Minister: What the hell was that?
Tumblr media
We should proceed as soon as possible. We may not have-
*Kirumi notices something in the sky through a window: bright orange glare followed by an expanding shockwave*
Tumblr media
GET DOWN! COVER YOUR EARS!
*Kirumi tackles the Prime Minister to the floor. The secret service agents follow suit*
*BMMMPPHH*
*Every window shatters, showering them all in fragments of glass*
Tumblr media
Ughh....are you alright, Mr. Prime Minister?
Prime Minister: What...the hell is happening?
Secret Service 1: Seems like...the end of the world...
Tumblr media
No...no fuckin’ way...
Tumblr media
Huuhh...hee...c-can’t believe I made it out of there.
Tumblr media
But...where the fuck am I?
*Miu climbs up a pile of debris, reaching the top floor of a small building*
Tumblr media
What the...hell...
*As far as she can see, everything’s on fire*
Tumblr media
What the hell What the hell What the hell What the hell What the hell What the hell What the hell What the hell What the hell What the hell What the hell
Tumblr media
I saw this news report back in prison. They said Shizuoka got hit first, then...this happened.
Tumblr media
In one day, they estimated there were close to thirty million causalities.
Tumblr media
Thirty...m-million?
Tumblr media
Then Akamatsu-san was right. I remember it now as well. By the end, half of Japan was in flames. Tsunamis began striking locations along the Pacific. The prime minister declare a state of emergency.
Tumblr media
Even when it was over, people started sayin’ it was the end of the world.
Tumblr media
End of the world....end of the fucking world...heeee...
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
Then...Earth is...are we...?
Tumblr media
I still don’t understand.
Tumblr media
I dunno either. Somehow, life managed to go on for most people.
Tumblr media
Go on?
Tumblr media
Huh? What do you mean?
Tumblr media
Wait a sec...Hoshi, how long ago you remember this happening?
Tumblr media
Hmm...from what I remember...
Tumblr media
About six months ago.

No longer lost in translation, a Whisky Tourist’s Guide to Japan
Tokyo has long had a special place in my heart, when I visited the first time I was a whisky fan who was exploring a city that had long been a fascination to me, now a decade later I returned with work and my experiences were a little different this time. Here is the GreatDrams whisky tourist's guide to Japan.
Check out the GreatDrams Ultimate Bar Guide to Tokyo too
Also see the detailed look at the Hakushu Distillery
Finally check out the most unrepeatable Japanese whisky tasting I've ever taken part in
Japan is more westernised now, easy to navigate and easy to communicate. Only time I needed my Google Translate app was in Duty Free to explain the concept of a flight transfer. Last time I was here it felt like another world, now it feels like my world; easier to navigate and communicate than France was when last there a year ago.
But has this westernisation come at a cost? I’m not sure in truth, but there were obvious let downs for me; I had spent ages pre-trip relearning business customs, phrases for getting around and how to order various sushi and drinks, but none of that was needed. And only one bar, Bar Butler, hand carved the ice balls whereas last time I was in town every bar did.
Maybe I have a romantic view of my last trip here a full decade ago, tho unlikely as I remember it vividly as I was ill for much of it with a form of Guillaume-Barre disease that effectively paralysed all the muscles in my face, meaning I had to manually chew and drink all drinks including neat whisky through a straw (would not be able to do that in the West now, but straws and plastic bags are everywhere here) which set in six hours after I landed in Japan and lasted until ten days after I was home. It was scary but I was so convinced I’d never be back here, and I am not one to really dwell on stuff like that, that I travelled the whole city, saw it and experienced it all. Who knew; the face freeze might have spread elsewhere as Guillaume-Barre often does, but it normally starts from the legs up, so I had to get on with things whilst I could.
Hence why I don’t think there is a huge amount of romantic rose tinted glasses retrospection here… although last time I did get to meet a monkey and have a photo with him, though like most photos from that trip I look miserable despite having an absolute belter as my face muscles could not raise a smile… I must have been the moodiest-looking tourist ever.
What hasn’t changed is the how busy and the extreme individuality of nearly every citizen within a culture of extreme conformity.
One of the things I was most impressed with was the people; they are so approachable and gentle, even if they cannot speak English they do their best to work out what you are saying.
The best example of this was when I was bar-hunting I kept getting to the address on Google and then drawing a blank as the addresses are so random and there are so many floors to each building with very few properly sign-posted that it is so hard to work out how to get in there unless you know the area. With that in mind I had to ask a LOT of people for help with directions and two in particular were incredible. If they can’t direct you they will walk you where you need to go, as noted in my Ultimate Bar Guide to Tokyo, “there was one guy who walked five blocks in circles asking people until it was clear it was impossible to find the place, then there was the guy who walked back from where he was going to discover the bar was on the 8th floor of his apartment block and he never knew. Be prepared to clock the steps in trying to hunt them down”.
Unbelievable.
[divider]BARS[/divider]
Japanese whisky was once the pride of each bar, now a selection of limited edition and single cask Scotches haves replaced that as they cater more for locals - which is understandable, but a challenge for tourists.
If you’re looking for bars, firstly check out my Ultimate Bar Guide to Tokyo, but here are the ones I would highly recommend:
Butler Ginza Branch
8 Chome-7-7 Ginza, Chūō, Tokyo 104-0061, Japan
Le Connaisseur
〒104-0061 Tokyo, Chūō, Ginza, 8丁目-4-26
Tokyo Whisky Library
〒107-0062 Tokyo, Minato, Minamiaoyama, 5丁目5−24 南青山サンタキアラ教会
[gallery type="rectangular" link="file" ids="33051,33052,33053"]
Bar Benfiddich
〒160-0023 Tokyo, Shinjuku, Nishishinjuku, 1 Chome−13−7 大和家ビル
El Calvador
SK Bldg 4F, 1-3 Maruyamacho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
Shinagawa Highball Bar
Exit Shinagawa Station using the East Exit and walk about 300 metres straight ahead of you, you cannot miss it
[gallery type="rectangular" link="file" ids="33047,33048,33049"]
.
Hibiya Bar Whisy-S II
8F Noco Building 5-6-5 Ginza, Chuo-ku
[divider]BUYING WHISKY IN JAPAN[/divider]
No whisky tourist's guide to Tokyo would be complete without a list of retailers you should try to visit if you’re looking for interesting whiskies, although there are no guarantees that there will be any gems, but you simply never know and ranges seem to change daily in some of them:
Liquors Hasegawa
http://www.liquors-hasegawa.com
〒104-0028 Tokyo, Chūō, Yaesu, 2 Chome−1, 八重洲地下街中4号
Liquor Mountain
1-2-16, Kabuki-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
Shinanoya World Wine and Foods - Shinjuku
Absolutely brilliant range of bottles - including limited edition Scotch and Irish whiskeys, as well as standard Japanese bottlings. 〒160-0021 Tokyo, 新宿区Kabukicho, 1 Chome−12−9 タテハナビル
A family-run liquor store about 300 metres down the road (east)
Just down the road from World and Liquor Mountain, I’m pretty sure it was a mom and pop store and was crazy cluttered, but at the back of the shop was a glass-fronted cabinet with a load of local bottles as well as some Scotch offerings and various interesting Japanese bottles too.
Isetan Department store
Great store, like the Harrods of Tokyo, and not only has it got a few great bottles there you can buy samples of many of the bottles they sell so you can try the stuff as well as buying it.
〒160-0022 3-14-1, Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
Isetan Duty Free store near the Ginza Station
Address: 104-8212 4-6-16, Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
The best part of this store is that, whilst their range is super-limited, you can buy the bottles and pick them up at the airport once you are past security to save on your luggage packing, given you will probably have other bottles to pack in as well!
[divider]MOVING AROUND THE COUTRY VISITING DISTILLERIES[/divider]
Tokyo, and Japan a whole, is really easy to move around, make sure before you travel you get a JR Pass from jrpass.com, it will cost £206 with special delivery and arrives super-swiftly. This will be your gateway to Tokyo and the whole of Japan as, as long as you use any of the JR lines which take you all over the place.
$rfsn_creative.generate('refersion_client/4644/creatives/dynamic/30030-d1efe313b3b721082c0bc9f5b5a4a605.json', { aid: '1445123.87f2d' });
Make sure you get a SkyRoam device, I hired one for around £115 plus £7 per day I was away and it was invaluable; it is effectively ‘internet in your pocket’ and actually felt like I was carrying ‘the internet’ each day. Good battery, allows you to connect five devices at once to it and mimics a local 4G network which you then connect to without paying more than your daily fee through SkyRoam. Marvellous. At times I got better connection than I do in my office! Buy here, and yes for this one I have an affiliate link as I was so impressed with it. Use coupon code GREATDRAMS to save 10% on your booking... win-win.
One thing to say up front; don’t expect many, if any distillery exclusives to add to your collection, Suntory do not seem to see the value in them and the distilleries I visited were too young to have mature spirit, although Asaka had bottles of their spirit that had been aged in various casks for up to six months available for around £28 - £40.
Gaia Flow
Travel on the Bullet Train from Shinagawa Station, which takes about 50 minutes - I would advise going to the ticket booking office and reserving a seat free of charge as these trains get really packed and you do not want to stand all that way.
Once you arrive at the Shizuoka Station, take a 35 minute taxi to Gaia Flow. Taxis will be outside the station to the left, and they are unlikely to know where you are going so show them the address and if you have a GPS device pre-load it so they can have a look.
Definitely call or email ahead of your visit as their visitor centre won’t be fully open until mid-way through 2019 but they are set up for brief tours if you so desire but it is courteous to let them know before you arrive so they can be free.
Asaka
From where you are staying take the JR line to Tokyo Station, which is MASSIVE, and take the bullet train to Kohriyama Station which will take about 80 minutes if memory serves. Then get a taxi to the Asaka Distillery. Again get in touch before going to ensure they are available and able to show you around. They have a shop which take cash only, but where you can try numerous young versions of their spirit including one maturing in Mizunara wood. They usually have limited edition whiskies in for purchase too that are limited to around 300 bottles each.
Hakushu
[gallery type="rectangular" link="file" ids="33044,33045,33046"]
Nearest station: Kobuchizawa, 1 hours 59 minutes from Shinjuku station in central Tokyo, then a 15 minute taxi to the distillery (or use the courtesy bus put on by the distillery at the weekend if it works with your itinerary). Simple.
[divider]IN SUMMARY[/divider]
Check out the GreatDrams Ultimate Bar Guide to Tokyo too
Also see the detailed look at the Hakushu Distillery
Finally check out the most unrepeatable Japanese whisky tasting I've ever taken part in
Japan is a phenomenal country with awesome people and an amazing amount of things to see and culture to experience so make sure you plan well and pay attention to train times as they are NEVER late.

Highlights include a cooking show, Funassyi imitating various Japanese entertainers (his imitation of Beat Takeshi aka Takeshi Kitano is priceless), Funassyi going camping, Funassyi going go-cart racing, and much more. There are also frequent live streams of The Pear doing interviews and so on.
There are also fan-exclusive meets with Funassyi, and fan-exclusive concerts too, such as the upcoming Zetsu Bushaa Tour (see schedule above).
Membership is 600 yen per month or 6,000 yen per year. You can now join from outside of Japan too, although the site is in Japanese only (and so is customer support and so on). Details here. You will most likely need a Japanese mailing address to receive materials from the site for now.
Note: Sometimes someone at the streaming video provider seems to turn on IP checking/blocking of non-Japanese IPs. If you can’t access the videos, just wait a few hours and it will usually get fixed.

Tumblr media
[ Theme: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ofr8qq… ] It's been five years since the event we now call Armageddon Day (A-Day for short) ravaged planet Earth, and forcibly reminded the human race that they weren't the ONLY race living here anymore. The supernatural, the mystical, the mythical...all of it real, hiding its fading glory away from a world that had forgotten them, and moved on in pursuit of science, not faith. Hidden away in a natural 'reserve' of sorts, a protected sanctuary for the forgotten fantasies of mankind, that place called Gensokyo might have been enough, allowing humanity to continue onwards, with the supernatural retreating to their own, undisturbed corners of the globe, never to interact with the race whose belief had spawned them.
A-Day had changed that, blowing open the boundaries of Gensokyo, and shattering the laws of physics, melding ironclad facts of science with the tempestuous, shifting vagaries of magic.
And, of course, dumping countless fleeing youkai refugees on a world ill-prepared for them.
Nine 'Zones' ripping holes in space across the world, each one almost eighty kilometers in diameter, surrounded on all sides by bizarre, crimson storms. Nobody knows what lies inside them for sure, but from what the refugees have said, Gensokyo, or what's left of it, is in there. Some of the things I've heard about that place now...hell, the things we humans have SEEN coming out of there, well...let's just say I don't blame the former residents for escaping.
Everyone knows what happened to Washington, after all.
But that's not really something I worry myself about too much these days. It's hard enough being a PI, much less a female one at my age without me wasting time on things like politics.
All I know is that the Zone which opened up here in Japan had an epicenter somewhere between Nagano and Tokyo...and the result basically chewed a perfect hole in our country, a gaping, storm-ringed circle that tore Tokyo in half, and completely devoured other districts whole. What it didn't outright destroy, it wrecked, the new coastline surrounding it lined with abandoned buildings and former residential districts.
Which turned out for the better, I suppose, as it gave the bedraggled youkai pulling themselves out of the water places to live and hide as they tried to piece their lives back together. By the time the world governments had managed to pull themselves back into some kind of order from the chaos on every front, the ruined districts had been turned completely into makeshift refugee camps and ghettos, filled with the survivors. Given that similar situations were occurring across the globe with the surroundings of the other Zones, you might be able to understand why that, coupled with the chaos caused by A-Day itself, ensured that humanity's typical first reaction of 'kill it with fire' didn't quite work out the way they hoped.
Of course, some people might call me cynical for that, and maybe I am...but then, I've spent my life chasing mysteries and the supernatural. I know it better than most, so for me, the supernatural becoming real wasn't as scary as all the earthquakes, storms, and other disasters that Day caused. For most people, however, that wasn't quite the case.
And as I'm sure you well know, fear leads people to do stupid, STUPID things.
I wouldn't say it was all the fault of us humans, of course. Youkai will be youkai, of course, and when faced with a place where they no longer had to control themselves, the more...unpleasant species may have indulged themselves. By and large though, most of them were more focused on running and hiding and surviving, so there's that.
I won't even say it was all as grim and terrible as it sounds, as like always, even humanity has its finer moments. Plus, thanks to a generation raised on stories and web culture of every kind...well, let's just say there are things I've heard from those hellish days, of human and youkai working together to protect each other, that can even make me smile.
…and that's not something I do much these days anymore.
Either way, none of this changes the fact that some smartass hardliners clung to the idea of blaming these bizarre newcomers for the chaos that had ravaged the world and, riding on a tide of human fear and resentment, as is the usual when faced with something new and different, attempted to demand 'compensation' for it. Blah blah blah, something about war crimes, return the youkai-claimed districts etc etc.
Obviously this didn't go too well.
Negotiations eventually broke down, and the inevitable fighting started...and both sides got something of a rude awakening in terms of where they stood in terms of military power.
The youkai, because the presence of magic everywhere meant they no longer needed 'faith' to survive...but that magic is spread so thinly their power's half of what it might have been once, and from what I hear, 'immortality' isn't quite what it used to be these days either.
The humans on the other hand ran into trouble because for all their technological advancements, the remaining youkai power and resilience was enough that after the first disastrous clashes humanity realized that exterminating them would cost almost everything in return.
The end result is a weird sort of 'peace' if you can call it that, but by and large youkai nowadays are still largely viewed with suspicion and prejudice, considered second class citizens at best. As a result, they tend to keep to themselves in the makeshift towns they've made in the ruins of the Zone surroundings. Shizuoka, Yokohama, Saitama and...well, what's left of Tokyo, all make up the biggest settlements, with the rest spread out around the landward circumference of the Zone in varying sizes. Near as I can tell, it's the same for all the other Zones across the world, or at least, the ones that opened on settled areas. The youkai don't get any new territory or living space beyond what the Zones already blew up since of course they're the only ones who'd be willing to put up with it, so it's no wonder all these shantytowns have sprung up.
Of course, it's no picnic. After all, the Zones are a hotbed of activity, sometimes spawning new monsters, or just wayward youkai that had somehow managed to survive in them for so long. Monster activity varies, with no real set pattern to what comes out of the things...beyond a definite trend towards horrifying and nightmarish beasts with a taste for catastrophic violence. Again, seems like we lucked out; everyone remembers the Godzilla looking monstrosity that rampaged across the Eastern seaboard of the US, or the flying, lightning spitting thing that ravaged Paris, but in a fine twist of irony, Japan remains untroubled by giant monster attacks.
Then again, we're the ones currently being lead by a masked Emperor whose gender nobody knows, in the midst of a rapidly accelerating revival of a new Imperial Japan, so what do I know.
Where was I...oh right. Yeah, the monsters...to be honest I think even without that, we'd still have put up the defense walls, if only because nobody but a maniac would leave a kilometers-wide towering crimson storm vortex completely unguarded or under surveillance 24/7. The walls are more like long fortresses, built on the landward sides of the Zone, and packed to the gills with arms, armor and scientific instruments. Crewed by garrison forces, the things are nigh indestructible, and serve as the bulwark against anything coming out of those red storms. Every Zone in the world is ringed by them, and their commanders have access to just about any military asset on the planet in the event of an emergency.
When a Wall Commander calls in for a kiloton-range airstrike, you'd best believe he gets it. Humanity doesn't agree on much these days, but when it comes to the Zones, and the monsters it can spawn, there's no hesitation: Hit it with everything we have, or die trying.
...the fact that these walls were almost built to keep the youkai trapped in there with the Zones is something most of the higher ups in government have quietly tried to sweep under the rug.
Either way, in the event anything gets through those walls, the youkai refugee settlements are first in the line of fire...and are expected to do their part in stopping it. It sounds cold, I know, but from a logical perspective, if the wall fails, even the weakened youkai would potentially be strong enough to stall it long enough for reserve forces to arrive, and for evacuations to be completed. I still don't like how it seems as though the youkai are expected to do all this in exchange for continuing to be treated like dirt, forced to live in those ruined shantytowns...but the world has never been what you'd call a fair place.
Resources are stretched too thin and distrust between the two races still runs too high for integration to be anything but a slow, painful process, with any number of outbursts of violence and controversy along the way. Crime's rampant in these towns, with shady entrepreneurs and underworld gangs of both species looking to make use of whatever they have to for survival or profit. The drug DTB surfaces on the news literally every other day, with some junkie looking to either get magical powers for a day, or a particularly desperate youkai regaining theirs and wreaking vengeance upon his or her oppressors.
It's not the best of times...but then it's not the worst, either.
I've heard talk of survivors within the Zones, or at least in the realm on the other side of those red winds. A 'Sanctuary' it's called, humans and youkai working and living together, waging their own war for survival against a Wonderland corroded beyond recognition. Magic's stronger in there too from what I hear, leading some particularly insane youkai, tired of the Outside World, as they call us, trying to get back in. I'd say it's about 50/50 on survival, especially now that the Sanctuary's managed to establish itself as a nation in its own right, with a representative on the United Nations, of all things.
A bandaged, horned woman with a practical cavalcade of animals at her beck and call, she's spearheaded the peace efforts, and is the person responsible for getting the idiots of BOTH species to back off long enough to start rebuilding and defending against the Zones. Plus, thanks to her, and the weight of the Sanctuary behind her, she even managed to buy enough time for smarter people to step up with solutions to the ongoing tensions between the two races and stave off yet another chapter in humanity's none-too-spotless record of war crimes.
They call her Kasen, I think, but like I said, a PI down in the Old Tokyo slums doesn't really have much time for politics.
Yeah, I live here, down on the edge of the youkai ghetto. And yeah, I'm a human too. So what?
Push comes to shove, both species can be idiots...but then they both have their high points too, and I don't have time to waste on 'speciesism' like most of the religious idiots and the supremacist hatemongers out there.
I've been a private investigator, with the odd spot of bounty hunting on the side to stay afloat, for the better part of three years now. I know most of the folks round here, and they know me. Long as nobody starts anything, we'll be just fine.
...'sides, it probably helps that I've done my fair share of problem solving around here since I started. I'm no good Samaritan or anything, but there's enough darkness in the world as it is already without the usual underbelly of humanity (and youkais) adding to it. Sometimes I get paid in cash, others in items or favors (and believe me, I always collect).
It's not a very glamorous life, but then this isn't a very glamorous world, at least not anymore.
I've got my office, four walls and a roof, got my contacts, my gun, and my motorcycle...my eyes too, but that's a story for another time.
It's not much, but it's all mine.
Even says so on the door: Renko Usami, Private Detective.
...well, under the usual graffiti and junk mail, anyway. How the hell are those places even in business still...?
Anyway, that's enough for now. Speaking of payments, I've got a client coming in tonight, and there're bullet holes in the sofa from the last time the local thugs came calling. They got off worse, but that still leaves me with a ruined couch I gotta cover up. Maybe if I throw a couple towels over it... ============================================================== HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! I am pleased to report that not only did I survive my fight with food poisoning/salmonella/whatever (an experience I have no wish to repeat ever) but I return with late Christmas gifts...like a long overdue return to Touhou via the end of the world! ...aka CCC, but most of you who read it know that already. And so we begin again with our next stage's 'protagonist', the private investigator Usami Renko and her personal outlook on the immediate world outside the ruins of Gensokyo, and some more geographical data. Mostly I'm just excited to be able to finally try my hand at a more 'noir' kinda setting and feel, and that's precisely what you have here in Old Tokyo. I'll likely be drawing very strongly on stuff from Akira, Snatcher, and more, so if you like that sort of stuff, Renko's story should be right up your alley! ...not to mention how much fun working this idea out in SAI turned out to be. I finally got to hint at a bunch of other stuff in the setting too, so woo hoo! Keep an eye out, there'll be more uploads this week with any luck, though I'm not sure how many will be CCC related. Either way, thanks for all the well-wishes, it's good to be back! As usual, CCC credit goes out to http://askdacast.tumblr.com/ and my crew on DA!

{:en}Travelling into Nagoya is perhaps one of my favourite trips. Everything you want to access is immediately around you – no changing of trains to get from the station into the city centre (Shin-Yokohama), no walking around to get away from the ominous building (Kyoto), and no buses needed to get to the actual city (Kanazawa!). And with Nagoya, it’s impossible to avoid the Yanagibashi area of Nagoya, both in terms of history and drinking.
The Yanagibashi market is open from early in the morning, supplying local restaurants and bars fresh produce, and also local citizens, looking for the freshest fish that have been brought into the port. The market has been around since the beginning of the Meiji era (around 1868). In the mornings, the market used to be full of hustle and bustle; however, as time has moved on, and supermarkets have taken over the roles of these individual shops, the area started to become dilapidated.
Enter in Sakaya Okadaya, which opened back in the 1920s during the Taisho era,  one of the few remaining sake bottle shops in the market. Located at the northern end of Yanagibashi Market, the shop has a varied selection of sake, wines, and also craft beer for sale, while also working as a distributor for bars in the area too. The parent company of numerous bars in the area has allowed Sakaya Okadaya to be able to dip their toes into opening craft beer bars in the Nagoya area.
The first bar, Craft Beer Keg Nagoya, opened in 2009 and was the first craft beer bar dedicated to domestic beer after Beer Circus, the taproom for another local brewery, Morita Kinshachi, closed back in the late 00s, due to a lack of demand for local craft beers. 2009 is also another important year as locals have deemed it to be the start of craft beer in Nagoya – a bold claim to make, but seeing as how numerous bars have opened since then, it’s hard to disagree with them.
Yet, the Yanagibashi area failed to see any benefit from this sudden uptake of domestic craft beer. The president of Sakaya Okadaya, Yamamoto Yasuhiro, grew up in the local area surrounding the market; however, seeing it change over time, he knew that something had to be done to rejuvenate the market. Seeing the crowds though in the evening frequenting the local bars led to the idea of opening a brewery – a first for the centre of Nagoya.
With the market playing such an important part of Yamamoto-san’s growing up, it was only natural for the area to play a huge role in the brewery. However, it was decided that rather than opening a brewery – mainly due to the area of land needed and also the financial demands from the outset – a brewpub would better suit the area. As an homage to the area, the brewpub was named Y Market Brewing and opened in March 2014.
Kachi-san, the head brewer at Y Market Brewing, was supposed to be off work on the day we went; however, what was supposed to have been a quick drop in to pick up some beers for a baseball game, (he’s a fervent Yomiuri Giants fan), ended up being a chat with Nakanishi-san as well about the aspects of brewing. Both Kachi-san and Nakanishi-san have a long and storied history with craft beer in Japan. Kachi-san started out at Kisoji Beer, which unfortunately closed in 2018, and Nakanishi-san began brewing at Ise Kadoya, still going strong in 2019. However, neither of their journeys into brewing were as straightforward as they make out to be.
Kachi-san began his adventures into craft beer overseas in Canada, and not in Japan. He was studying as an exchange student, but found himself to be running out of money and in need of more – studying overseas is a very expensive method of learning. Picking up a job at a local bar meant more money and also more access to locally made beers, rather than the big macro beers. It was also in Canada that Kachi-san also met Luc “Bim” Lafontaine, the famed Canadian brewer with over 20 years experience, with who has had experience in Dieu du Ciel (Canada) and also in Japan at Ushitora, and now owns his own brewery, Godspeed back in Canada. Lafontaine convinced Kachi-san to spend some money to begin homebrewing and a brewer was born.
Nakanishi-san started out at Ise Kadoya beer, one of the oldest craft beer breweries in Japan, working there until March 2014. His brewing history, while not as traditional as Kachi-san, started out in high school while classes in biology piqued his interest in fermentation – something that is the norm rather than the exception in countryside schools. Unlike universities and schools overseas, no Japanese universities offer brewing courses to potential brewers as none of them possess the requisite brewing license needed to legally brew beer. Nakanishi-san managed to find an opening in 1999 and then followed the “traditional” role of brewers in Japan – working and studying on the job, becoming head brewer in 1999. However, when Y Market came calling, he knew it was a chance for him to carry on with his learning of foreign styles of beers, in particular, American beers.
With the two brewers on board, and the brewpub ready to go, the whole application for the initial brewing was relatively painless. The original plan was for a 500 liter system, but a a brewery in Tottori had recently closed, so a 1000l system was purchased and is still used to this day. Kachi-san and Nakanishi-san began brewing beers that they wanted to drink, with Yamamoto-san giving them free reign – which has paid off for both parties.Y Market Brewing started out with pale ales and IPAs – both of which are heavily American influenced – so much so that predominantly American hops are used in the beers.
Both brewers were in firm agreement when it came to the kinds of beers that they wanted to make – ones that have drinkability. Beers can be high or low in terms of alcohol, hops, or malt, but they have to be drinkable – and not just one or two, but numerous times. The repeat beers that you can easily drink and come back for more. While there are some stalwarts among the Y Market Brewing lineup, for example the Sky Pale Ale series, the limited editions and seasonals are usually made from ideas the pair share and want to try.
The naming behind the beers isn’t as random as some of the names appear to be. The Sky Pale Ale series all contain a colour – Purple Sky Pale Ale, Yellow Sky Pale Ale, Orange Sky Pale Ale and so on, all stem from experiences that the pair have shared. The Purple Sky Pale Ale comes from some cloud system that Kachi-san experienced in Canada – thick, dark clouds along with some hot and humid weather, while Yellow Sky Pale Ale reminds them of the yuzu, better known as a Japanese citron, while the Orange Sky Pale Ale, as you’ve already probably guessed by now, reminds them of the orange colour found in the unknown fire rumoured to be seen in Kyushu called a “shiranui”.
In 2015, Y Market Brewing began to bottle some of their more popular beers as an experiment to see if there was a demand for them. However, in the small brewpub space, the bottling capability was low and Y Market Brewing enlisted the help of Gotemba Kogen, in Shizuoka, to help brew and bottle some of their beers. As the popularity of Y Market increased though, the 1000l started to hinder, rather than help the growth of Y Market Brewing. At maximum capacity throughout the week, and beers selling at times faster than they could make the beers, there was a need to open a new brewery.
In November 2018, Y Market Brewing opened up their new brewery in the northern part of Nagoya city, about 8kms from the city centre in a small industry area just north of the River Shin. The brewery has a much larger capacity with over 30kl available for fermentation and also 3 bright beer tanks too. The system itself also incorporates equipment that would be more common in an American brewery rather than your usual Japanese brewery, with a whirlpool tank (used for imparting more hop flavours after boiling and during cooling the beers), four hop rockets in succession (at the time of writing the most in Japan for a single brewery), and also a portable hop tornado, made famous by Sierra Nevada.
In 2019, Y Market Brewing moved from bottling their beers to canning their beers – a process that should see them continue to expand. ⅓ of every 3500 liter batch goes into canning, with the rest going to kegging for sales to bars across Japan. This new brewery though hasn’t meant the closure of the original brewery in the taproom. Beers that are popular are brewed on the much larger system and test brews are made on the taproom system. If the beers become popular, such as the Lupulin Nectar or the La Mosique, then they will be canned for future sales.
The move to canning hasn’t been easy. If you’ve picked up, or seen the cans, their simply coloured label on the side wasn’t a deliberate design process. The main issue faced with canning the beers was that the original label used on the can was made on a film that would end up crushing the can when it was heat shrunk to fit the can. As such, the label idea came in; however, Nakanishi-san did joke about what colours would come next as they use more and more of them up on the labels. Both Kachi-san and Nakanishi-san are interested in collaborations with both domestic and overseas breweries too with Cascade, Culmination, 50/50, and Heretic have been done or in the process of being planned.
Y Market Brewing have come a long way in a short amount of time, with good reason. Two brewers at the helm who are clear about their goals, with a president entrusting them with full control – a rarity in the business minded environment of Japan. Next time you’re in a craft beer bar and see Y Market Brewing, remember that it all started out because someone believed craft beer could save a small area of a city.{:}{:ja}名古屋への旅行は恐らくお気に入りの旅行の一つである。
ワイマーケットブルーイングは、良い理由によって、短期間で大きな進歩を遂げた。実権を握っている2人の醸造者が目標を明確にし、社長が彼らに完全なコントロールを任せている。これは日本のビジネス志向の環境では珍しいことなのだ。次にクラフトビールバーを訪れてワイマーケットブルーイングを見かけたときは、クラフトビールが街の小さなエリアを救うと信じた人によってすべてが始まったことを覚えておくべきだろう。{:}

Violent Japanese Mascot That Tickled John Oliver Is Suspended by Twitter
HONG KONG — The Twitter accounts of a Japanese mascot whose naughty antics charmed the internet and drew praise from the comedian John Oliver were abruptly suspended this week.
Fans are bereft. But still kind of amused.
The cutesy-looking unsanctioned mascot, Chiitan, was modeled on a real-life otter that was itself an official honorary tourism mascot last year for the southern Japanese city of Susaki.
But Chiitan’s violent stunts — such as pushing over a car or attacking an inflatable pole with a baseball bat — became instant memes that delighted social media users around the world. Susaki city officials initially turned a blind eye toward them — until complaints about the mascot’s antics began to pour in from around Japan.
In January, a Susaki official told The New York Times that the city was consulting a lawyer because it worried that Charando, the design company that owned a copyright for Chiitan, was profiting off its viral antics. That is a concern in Japan because the country allows its citizens to donate tax payments to municipalities of their choice — a potential windfall for a place with a flashy mascot.
Charando expressed remorse at the time that its mascot had caused problems for its hometown. But after the city filed a court case in February against Kleeblatt, Chiitan’s management company, in which it asked for the mascot to suspend its activities, Chiitan kept tweeting anyway.
This week, Chiitan’s Twitter accounts in several languages went dark without explanation or warning, Kleeblatt said in a statement on Friday. The real-life otter’s account was also suspended.
Kleeblatt said in an email that it had not posted anything prejudicial or malicious on the accounts, only “healthy” material. The mascot has also appeared on Instagram, where it has 1.6 million followers.
Ian Plunkett, a spokesman for Twitter, said in an email that the company does not comment on individual accounts out of privacy and security considerations.
Soumei Arisawa, a spokesman for the city of Susaki, said on Friday that the city had not contacted Twitter about Chiitan’s Twitter accounts, and that other characters managed by Kleeblatt had also been closed in recent days.
But Mr. Arisawa added that the city’s copyright dispute with Chiitan was continuing, and that the rogue mascot was created based on the design of Shinjokun, the city’s official mascot, who is also modeled on an otter. (Chiitan and Shinjokun share a designer but are based on different breeds of otter.)
“The city wants Chiitan to stop her activity,” he said. “Shinjokun has the copyright and Chiitan is created based on Shinjokun’s design.”
Chris Carlier, a British writer in Tokyo who runs the website and Twitter feed Mondo Mascots, said it struck him as unfair for Twitter to ban the accounts of a “children’s character” like Chiitan, given all the inflammatory information coursing through the platform.
But Twitter may have deemed it necessary to take action against the mascot, he said, if enough parents complained about the “anarchic” nature of its videos.
“I feel most sorry for the actual living otter Chiitan, who had already lost her job as Susaki City’s tourism ambassador, and has now had her Twitter account suspended,” Mr. Carlier said. “The world’s unluckiest otter!”
Chiitan is one of thousands of mascots, or “yuru-chara,” that have proliferated across Japan since the early 2000s. Most are sponsored by municipalities or companies and tend to promote specific cities or regions.
But as officials race to brand their municipalities with cuddly mascots, many young people have gravitated to edgier ones that are what they call “disturbingly cute,” said Jillian Rae Suter, a professor of informatics at Shizuoka University in Japan who has studied the yuru-chara phenomenon.
“Of course, Chiitan is really cute, but then he or she also does these subversive activities, so that might help with its popularity,” she said.
Chiitan is still not a household name within Japan, but its international profile grew last month when Mr. Oliver devoted a nearly 13-minute segment of his popular HBO show, “Last Week Tonight,” to the mascot and its feud with Susaki’s government.
Mr. Oliver called Chiitan “psychotic,” but praised its videos as “works of art” and its tweets as “virtuosic.” He also unveiled “Chiijohn,” a mascot version of himself that his show sent to Susaki to meet Shinjokun, the city’s official mascot.
Michelle Goldstein, a spokeswoman for HBO, said on Thursday that the show’s team had no comment on Chiitan’s Twitter suspension.
But fans were showing support through an online petition to have Chiitan reinstated on the platform. As of Friday morning in Japan, it had nearly 4,000 signatures.
They were also visiting a Japanese-language Twitter account that Chiitan quietly opened on Thursday night. The account’s first post shows the mascot in signature naughty form: jumping over a wooden bar and crashing into a wall of metal cans.
“I’m going to post ‘Play house’ until the original account gets defrosted,” Chiitan said in the post.

Full 48th Anniversary Tour Cards, New Japan Cup 2020 Brackets Revealed
Tumblr media
Last night, as I went to bed, NJPW revealed not only the lineups for the 48th Anniversary tour,  but the brackets for the opening rounds of the New Japan Cup 2020. This is why my posts seem like they’re a day behind sometimes -- NJPW reveals stuff when I’m in bed, and then I work in the morning, so oftentimes I don’t to write about it til the next evening. As a great man once said, “So it goes.”
The prize for this year’s New Japan Cup is the right to challenge for the Double Gold titles against Tetsuya Naito at Sakura Genesis, on 3/31/2020. That being said, there are some very interesting matchups in the first round, not the least of which being Kazuchika Okada v. Jay White on 3/7/2020. Jay is my personal pick to win this, as it makes sense to run that match at Sakura Genesis IMO. Yuji Nagata v. Minoru Suzuki on the same day is also mouthwatering, although neither of those two will win the Cup. The show before, 3/4/2020, features Togi Makabe v. Jeff Cobb which will be...  interesting, as should Tomohiro Ishii v. Toa Henare, who’ve had a little bit of a (one-sided) feud through the years.
A rematch from the Best of the Super Juniors Final is on 3/8/2020, as Will Ospreay faces Shingo Takagi. The Golden Aces also face their next prospective challengers Dangerous Tekkers in singles matches that day, along with SANADA v. Mikey Nicholls, who is still getting an NJPW paycheck for some reason. The final 1st Round date sees Satoshi Kojima v. EVIL, which should be very good.
Two notables absences in the brackets, however, are Lance Archer and Jon Moxley. Mox can’t commit to a full tour, owing to his AEW commitments, and is likely to be at Sakura Genesis since that is a one-off. Archer, however, is rumored to be getting headhunted by AEW, so it’s not known how long he may be remaining with NJPW. Tomoaki Honma was also left out, and while he is pretty limited nowadays, his match with Taichi was one of my favorites from last year’s Cup.
Lastly, all New Japan Cup 2020 shows will be live on NJPWWorld.
Card lineups below:
48th Anniversary Tour - 3/1/2020, Ibaraki Mito Municipal Gymnasium

Mr. Okuma’s Project—Looking for Places to live…by boat
In the city of Saiki on Onyu Island (Oita Prefecture), 55-year old Satohiro Okuma runs a guest house. He had the idea of sailing with a group of middle-aged and senior citizens while searching for places to live. The trip plan had them leaving out of Saiki Port and visiting the various outlying islands of Kyushu.
Mr. Okuma quit his company job 5 years prior and moved from Tokyo to Onyu Island. The group he put together is made up of sailing aficionados from places like Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka, who kept in touch with each other via various social networking sites. The plan was to put together a trip to get people interested in Kyushu and its people through direct contact, and give them experiences to further their interest in moving to the area—using his own experience and knowledge.
There are now 8 men aged 55-77 in the group. They all stay on Mr. Okuma’s yacht “Hayamaru”— a 10.6 meter, 7.3 ton boat—and plan to visit Tsushima (Iki Island, Nagasaki Prefecture), Shimokoshiki Island (Kagoshima Prefecture), Iwo Jima, Tanega Island, and the various outlying islands. When they get to a place, they get to walk around the various port towns sampling food and culture while mingling with the locals. The budget is about 3000 yen (~$30 USD) per person per day.
The group departed October 28th, pulled into Beppu City’s Kitahama Harbor for inspections, and began their journey in earnest on November 1st. They plan to return to Saiki Port by the 25th.
“We’re a band of close friends who love the sea,” says Mr. Okuma. “We walk the port towns, hold individual negotiations on homes up for sale and, in general, search for available places to live in a way that is less formal than the governmental way of doing things.”
