Maha Shivratri - Importance, Celebrations & Rituals
What is Maha Shivratri?
Maha Shivratri is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals in India. Known for its beautiful rituals like fasting, praying, chanting, meditating and offering various Abhishekam (ritual bathing) for the Shivalinga, representing Lord Shiva, this auspicious day has all-night-long rituals and celebrations seeking blessings from the Divine through Lord Shiva and his consort, Maa Parvati. The word, ‘Shivratri,’ means the night dedicated to praying to Lord Shiva and as the name suggests, this festival is observed mainly during the night, making it truly one-of-a-kind. This festival is celebrated on the fourteenth day of Phalguna month of the Lunar Hindu calendar. This year, Maha Shivratri will be observed on Wednesday, 26 February 2025. The date and month of Shivratri change every year as it is based on the lunar calendar. Hence, this adds a special significance to the festival, connecting it deeply to nature and cosmic cycles.
Significance of Maha Shivratri
Shivaratri is significant, both in religious and spiritual contexts. In the religious context, according to ancient Vedic and Puranic texts like the Linga Purana, Skanda Purana and Padma Purana, Maha Shivratri signifies many epic events. One of the main significance is that this is the night when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati united in a celestial holy matrimony, representing the harmonious balance of the divine masculine and feminine energies. This night is also believed to be when Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance, the ‘Tandava’, which embodies the cycles of creation, preservation and destruction within the universe. Maha Shivratri has a deep spiritual significance too. It represents the victory of light over ignorance and darkness. In the Puranic stories, this night also signifies the night when Lord Shiva vanquished Tripurasura, the demon of darkness and ego and also destroyed ‘Tripura’, the three great cities of the Asuras, earning him the name, ‘Tripurantaka’. Thus, Maha Shivratri is a great opportunity for devotees to purify their body, mind and soul. It is believed that by waking up the whole night on this auspicious festival and singing prayers and Bhajans for Lord Shiva, one is blessed by the Divine cosmic energies. This night is considered as one of the most powerful and magical nights when the devotees can transcend their boundaries and connect with the Divine energy. Maha Shivratri is thus, a deeply spiritual day for the devotees. It gives them an opportunity for devotion, reflection and celebration of Lord Shiva. People pray for blessings from the Divine, the Supreme Power and work towards Enlightenment and Spiritual development and Awakening.

Embracing Tradition
Maha Shivratri, which translates to the “Great Night of Shiva,” is celebrated with great fervor across India and among Hindus worldwide. It falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Phalguna (February-March). This auspicious day is believed to be the time when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction.
Spiritual Significance
For devout Hindus, Maha Shivratri holds immense spiritual significance. It is a time for introspection, penance, and seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. Devotees observe fasts, perform rituals, and offer prayers at Shiva temples throughout the night. The chanting of mantras, singing of bhajans (devotional songs), and recitation of Shiva scriptures create an atmosphere charged with divine energy.
Rituals and Customs
Maha Shivratri is marked by various rituals and customs that vary regionally but share a common thread of reverence for Lord Shiva. Devotees often visit Shiva temples, especially the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. They offer belpatra (leaves of the bilva tree), milk, honey, water, and other traditional offerings to the Shiva Lingam, symbolizing the worship of the divine masculine energy.
Spiritual Awakening through Yoga and Meditation
Yoga and meditation hold a special place during Maha Shivratri celebrations. Many devotees engage in pranayama (breathing exercises), asanas (yoga postures), and dhyana (meditation) as a means of attaining spiritual enlightenment and connecting with the cosmic consciousness. The practice of yoga is believed to purify the body, mind, and soul, preparing devotees for deeper spiritual experiences.

Shivratri 2024 Special: Must-Do 5 Works for the Pleasure of Lord Shiva
The auspicious festival of Mahashivratri is arriving soon on 08 March 2024. This day is supremely sacred to Lord Shiva and observing a fast and worship on Shivratri 2024 is known to be extremely dear to Him. Here are some special things you can do on this blessed day for the pleasure of Lord Shiva:
1.Chant the Shiva Panchakshara Mantra
The five-syllable mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” is the most beloved by Lord Shiva. Chant this mantra 108 times with devotion and focus on Shivratri 2024 for the contentment of the Divine Lord.
- Chant slowly and pronounce each syllable.
- Use malas or japa beads to easily keep count.
- Set a target like 11, 21, or 108 repetitions.
2.Perform Abhishekam
Abhishekam is the practice of bathing a deity in sacred liquids while chanting mantras. On Shivratri 2024, perform abhishekam on a Shiva lingam at home or in the temple using substances like milk, honey, curd, ghee, sandal paste, and bilva leaves. Offering bilva leaves is said to be especially pleasing to Shiva.
3.Make Bael Leaves Offering
Bilva or bael leaves are extremely sacred to Lord Shiva. Offer three leaves on Shivratri 2024 to please Him. Place one leaf on the Shiva lingam and chant “Om Namah Shivaya”. Place the second leaf while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” again. Place the third leaf and repeat the mantra a final time. This simple ritual delights Mahadev.
- Pick fresh, unbroken leaves for your offering.
- You can offer just one leaf if three are not available.
4.Fast and Keep Vigil
Observing a fast on Shivratri shows devotion. Eat only fruits and milk before sunset. Stay awake all night chanting, praying, and singing bhajans in Lord Shiva's honor. Staying up vigilantly is a way to show commitment to Mahadev.
- Take the next day off from work or school to rest after staying up all night.
- Share Shiva stories and serve Prasad to others to make the vigil more engaging.
5.Pray at a Shiva Temple
On the night of Shivratri 2024, spend time at a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Attend the special puja and celebrations held on this night. Offer prayers, meditate, and take darshan of the Shiva lingam. Seek blessings and inspiration to take your spiritual practice deeper.
By doing these observances on Mahashivratri, we can demonstrate our utmost devotion to Lord Shiva and earn his divine grace. May this Shivratri 2024 bring you peace, fulfillment, and closeness to the eternal Lord.
Har Har Mahadev!

Om Sairam
Every Navrathri is a special occasion for all devotees and significantly for Sai devotees. The Navrathri leads to the Vijayadashami, the occasion of Sai’s Mahasamadhi. This Navrathri Baba and the Satcharitra got me thinking about another sacred nine-the Nav vidha Bakthi. In chapter 21 of Satcharitra, we learn about the nine forms/ways of worship. Following any one of these methods with loving devotion may lead us to stability and peace of mind or our own seemollanghan where we can finally unite with Baba.
Here I wish to capture some instances found in the Satcharitra, that inspires me to believe it is an act under one of the nine forms of worship.
1. SMARANA- Thinking about God or taking his name whenever you can is SMARANA or remembrance.Radhakrishnamai felt that the greatest form of Bakthi was namasmarana. She initiated constant reciting of Baba's name in the Dwarkamayee during many festivals and involved all the devotees in it.
Baba by his own example read the Ramavijaya at the time of his passing away to encourage everyone do the same so that most importantly at the time of our passing away we may remember God.
When the Rohilla used to constantly shout and remember the verses of Quran, Baba asked others to put up with it as there is nothing better than remembering God and as it would keep bad thoughts away.
Many times Baba has shown that merely thinking of Him would entail us of his help. The Satcharitra too asks us to remember the Chavadi procession every night before we go to bed or fall asleep.
When Nanasaheb Chandorkar is transferred to Pandharpur he wishes to visit Baba and ask Him to come to Pandharpur. As soon as Nanasaheb comes to Shirdi, Baba in Dwarkamayee is making Bhajan which is to the effect that He wishes to go to Pandharpur. This mere thought of Nanasaheb was graced and blessed by Baba.
2. Archana- Worshipping God with rituals is Archana. It often involves offerings and chantings. Megha is an ardent follower of Archana type of worship. He performs Aarti regularly to Baba both in person and in his wada. He performs Archana and pooja in the same manner it is done for Lord Shiva.Megha for the sake of doing abhisheka for Baba on the day of Shivratri walks miles and miles to get sacred water from Godavari and also regularly travels long distances to get Bilva leaves for worship. He daily performs Archana in all the temples and then performs Archana for Baba as well.
3. Dasya- Acting as a servant of the Lord. It normally involves performing various acts/ services for the God. Bagoji Shinde used to perform services all day to Baba. When Baba recieved a fire wound, Shinde used to daily apply ghee and tie new bandages. He would carry an umbrella for Baba whenever he left the Dwarkamayee and would always be present near Baba to do his bidding when Baba rested in Dwarkamayee.
Balaji Patil Newasker also used to daily sweep the roads on which Baba used to walk for his daily Biksha rounds.
Kakasaheb Dixit once when asked to sacrifice and behead a goat, still became ready to do it at the bidding of Baba, although he had never performed it before and would have been quite averse to do it by himself. He said he would do what Baba asked him to do.It was not his place to question Baba or to deny him. This is the true nature of Dasya or service.
4. Shravana- Listening to the stories of God and His name is Shravana.Once Hemadpant got a doubt in his mind about why Baba is blessing another with just a week's parayan/ study of the sacred books when he wasn't blessed even after so many years of service. For this Baba asked him to go listen to some Leelas from Shama. I feel when Hemadpant ji was going astray with doubtful thoughts Baba put him gently back on the path of Bakthi through Shravana. In turn Hemadpant also wrote the Satcharitra and helped everyone listen to/read the Leelas of Baba.
Baba also encouraged all his Bakthas to read sacred scriptures and also explain them to an audience.
5. Sakhyatva- Friendship with God.Shama many times did not behave very formally with Baba. When Mrs. Khaparde goes with her Naivedya and Baba eats it and relishes it, Shama asks him why the partiality. Only Shama could ask that. Another time Shama tells he doesn't want a naughty God who pinches him when Baba teases and touches him. Shama tells Mrs. Aurangabadkar that if Baba’s word doesn't come true he will himself drive out Baba from the masjid. He doesn't feel the need to be reserved with Baba yet at all times he turns to Baba without a second thought. While a scorpion bites him he still rushes to Baba without thinking or trying of a remedy first. He does worship to Baba when he has to fulfill vows to his family Goddess. He is in constant awe of Baba and realises that Baba is both the cause and effect when he says "Oh, Deva you sit here calm and composed and agitate the devotees and when they get restless, you draw them here, some in person and others through letters. If you know the contents of the letter, why do you then press me to read it?"and ""Deva, what is this play of Yours? You first raise a storm and make us restless and then calm it down and ease us”, such is Shama's devotion to Baba.
6. Padasevana- worshipping the feet of Baba
Worshipping the feet or padam/padukas of the Lord is very auspicious. In Satcharitra devotees of Baba make padukas of Baba and install it at the Neem tree where Baba used to sit when he first visited Shirdi and called it his Gurustaan. Aarti and Naivedya were performed daily there.
Padasevana for me can also be service at the feet of Baba.
Bayajama used to roam the forests daily to feed Baba lunch. Mrs. Khaparde never ate before offering Baba Naivedya and service.
Lakshmibai Khaparde daily prepared Naivedya and only after Baba had it she would eat. She also used to shampoo his legs. Mavsibai, Anna Chinchanikar,Nanasaheb Chandorkar , Hemadpant and so many other have regularly shampooed Baba's feet, hands and massaged him and Baba has allowed each one to worship Him with their own way of worship.
7. Keertana- Kirtana means singing the glory of God. Dasganu Maharaj is the most apt example of this. He sang kirtans about Baba and always did Kirtans and Bhajans with a photo of Baba and through his singing and story telling spread the glory of Baba. Nanasaheb Chandorkar was equally responsible for spreading the glory of Baba. Even though he did not sing, he spread and spoke about the glory of Baba and his Leelas to anybody and everybody he met. He made sure many people benefitted through Baba’s grace. For me Kirtana is spreading the glory and grace of God and hence none better than Nanasaheb comes to mind who spread Babas greatness to many. Many of Baba's Aarti was composed by KJ Bhishma. Madhav Adkars Aarti finds a place in Satcharitra.Reciting it helps in troubled times.Dasganu Maharaj's Stavana Manjari . The songs sung by women of Shirdi in praise of Baba like while grinding wheat in Chapter 1, all of it is Kirtana at its glorious best.
8. Namaskara- Falling at the feet and seeking the grace of Baba. The story of the Tarkhad family in Satcharitra reminds us the power of Namaskara. When mother and son leave for Shirdi they wonder who will perform pooja for Baba at their home and the father undertakes to do it. Before starting to perform pooja he does Namaskara to Baba and says let the worship not become a mere formal ritual but allow that it be done wholeheartedly. Then the pooja is successfully performed for a couple of days and on the third the Naivedya is absent-mindedly forgotten. This is communicated by Baba to the son and mother who are at Shirdi. That one sincere Namaskara was accepted by Baba and he accepted the pooja from that moment on and says today He had nothing to eat. That one sincere Namaskara made Baba visit their home everyday.
Baba also once tells Bala Buva who visits Shirdi for the first time that he has know him for four years.Bala Buva then understands that he had made Namaskara to Baba's photo 4 years ago and that was sufficient for Baba.
9.Atmanivedana- complete surrender to the feet of Lord.
Radhakrishna Mai is perfect embodiment of Atmanivedana. She is fondly referred to as Meera to Baba’s Krishna. She eats whatever prasad Baba send her from His plate. She initiates namasmarana, she asks devotees to get palkis and horses and dresses and many objects for worship just the same way Krishna or Vithoba is worshipped. She is called the 'school' by Baba for anyone who enters her presence can only gain Bakthi and understand Bakthi. She sweeps the roads that Baba walks everyday, she prepares the Naivedya and other prasad that Baba requires. She even when badly hurt or under severe ailment continues her service to Baba.
Kakasaheb Dixit is another devotee who surrendered at the feet of Baba. Although Nanasaheb had suggested Baba' s name to cure Kakaji of his injured leg, Kakaji after hearing about Baba had instead wished that Baba would cure the lameness of his mind. And so after some years of regularly visiting Shirdi he built a wada there and constantly thought of Baba and did Baba's every bidding and grew his spiritual self as per Baba's instructions. He slowly left behind his temporal jobs and activities and took the spiritual path under Baba’s guidance. He was speaking of Baba till his final breath.
This is a humble attempt at expressing myself and my love for Baba, if there be any mistakes ,I request you to forgive me.

THIS MAHA SHIVRATRI, VISIT THE MOST CELESTIAL & DIVINE SANATANA DHARMA & VAISHNO DEVI YATRA AT THE SHIVOHAM SHIVA TEMPLE. Maha Shivaratri 2025
Significance Of Maha Shivaratri Shiva Temple became the Shivoham Shiva Temple. It symbolises the journey of a true Yogi from being a believer to a true seeker of the truth.
Transcend 'Om Namah Shivaya' and evolve to 'Shivoham' by realizing the true meaning of the Mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' - 'O Lord! I bow down to You in the form of Shiva,' to 'Shivoham' - 'Shiv Aham’ which literally means 'I am Shiva.' But actually it means, 'I am nothing, Shiva is everything.'
Then, evolve from Faith in God, from praying in the temple, to Realizing God. This is Enlightenment. This is God-Realization. Realizing the Ultimate Truth that God is not God, God is SIP - the Supreme Immortal Power that is everywhere and in everything.
