kinou nani tabeta and uramichi onii san have the same problem. niche manga about subjects that do not appeal to any specific genre that i love to death that have a total of 3 lovers on tumblr dot com.

Something that people don't talk about enough is how fucking funny the "Kinou Nani Tabeta" doujinshis are. Like, yeah that's where the sex scenes happen but honestly they are absolutely hilarious because you see how ridiculous Shirou is and how much Kenji is struggling to keep up.

Like when Kenji decided not to get hair treatment bc it might affect his performance in bed, and Shirou heard this and was like: "please go bald, the lights will be off when we fuck anyway, and lord knows I need as much as I can get before your libido starts declining fr" and Kenji was like *man standing emoji*

And then, Shirou's type is literally a stern and stoic top who would hurt him, and Kenji is just NOT that guy at all. Shirou genuinely thinks being mistreated is lowkey sexy, both in the bedroom and in daily life (please seek help). Meanwhile, his current partner is so gentle and kind to him that he starts missing the toxicity of his ex like HELLO????

And then, you get to the part where Kenji dresses like a Yakuza and Shirou is insanely turned on by this, and he's like begging to be beat up and degraded and the entire time Kenji is internally like: "the bar is too damn high, what the fuuuckk........" And they have intense sex that scares Kenji, and that day was supposed to KENJI'S birthday.

The fact that you can see the moments where Kenji is like "this is some freaky ass shit" and meanwhile Shirou is internally like KYAAAAAA MY HUSBANDDD

My reaction, as soon as I saw Shiro staring at his spreadsheet on my screen, was oh, I MISSED them.

The character development we got up to here didn't get retconned (my biggest fear with any sequel), and I love it so much. That scene at Shirou's company – he's DEFINITELY not going to girly bars, and everyone knows, but the way his boss really emphasised the "he's not going anywhere they've got girls!" … poor Shirou. Also kudos to Nishijima-sensei, I loved his 😑 face in that scene. We see that as a plot point, that's going to come and cause more trouble (or plot development) – I'm excited to see how that goes.

I was genuinely sad about their supermarket closing. Where we choose to shop is such a personal thing, and as someone who hates third-party-inflicted change, I really felt for Shirou here. His indignant reaction to learning the cashier could be friendly! And the way he doesn't learn -- but we do -- that the lady from the supermarket is happy to see him again!

Kenji -- I missed him, too. He's a lot, but he's perfect that way, and every time Shirou and Kenji were on screen together I just kept thinking how much I love these two together.

For the staging: I LOVE how I can see Yoshimoto-sensei's panels in many these shots. I don't remember that as clearly from S1, though I might just not have been paying attention then.

I missed this show so much. Looking forward to trying more recipes, too, when Shirou makes things I can get the ingredients for. ¥30k/month for two adults' food is incredible, I'm in awe. Raw ingredients for food (other than fresh seafood) can be had relatively cheap where I live, my household cooks pretty much everthing from scratch, we rarely cook or eat meat at home, and when scaled, we still don't manage with that little. Gotta take a page out of Shirou's book.

Kohinata is delightful, I need to hunt for gifs of him swaggering towards Wataru and Shiro-san while flexing his chest muscles

Finally Shiro-san told him that he didn't have to eat it, I was wondering how long it would take. I would love some rice balls with burdock root (besides the point but I love the word "burdock" in english. it sounds so earthy, hearty and appetizing)

Everything about Wataru screaming was pure perfection. The gayest little shrieks. And Shiro-san's face when he got too absorbed into the food

The facial expression at "well 50 is 50 after all" is killing me

everytime when these four hang out it is such a spectacle of acting. Every movement they make, every facial expression. I am so happy.

I love Kayoko doing her detective work and then freaking out about it. This married couple is so silly I love it. They are so excited. Bless them. Uchino Seiyo is brilliant. I love everything about this. Kenji explaining what 2-chome is, and Shirou-san both freaking out about it but also trying to listen in.

I'd also love to have some tempura and aji fry...

That Kenji....san killed me. As well as Kenji's "chuuu" while he squeezes the lemon. ("fourth place out of six" in the background - every little detail is so perfect)

Uchino Seiyo's lip almost trembling with how hard the emotions hit him.

Wataru and Kohinata remain the most hilarious combo in terms of characters.

I adore that these two met in their 40s. Perfect premise for this show.

A Few Words On "disillusion"

It's hard to put into proper words what Fate and the Nasuverse as a whole have meant to me for the past year, now that I'm slowly inching towards my one-year anniversary of finishing Heaven's Feel. One day I want to write more about Fate/stay night, but thankfully, today I will just stop at its incredible opening, specifically the version heard in the anime adaptation of Fate route by Studio Deen.

You might be asking yourself why that version in particular. I personally consider that version to be the best and most realized version of the song. While the original sung by M.H. is an intense, percussion-heavy battle hymn accompanied by aggressive, popping and buzzing synths that prepare you for the conflict of the 5th Holy Grail War, the anime version performed by Tainaka Sachi and arranged by the legendary Kenji Kawai, the composer for the Fate/stay night anime as well as many gems such as Ghost in the Shell and the anime adaptation of Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, is a beautiful ballad, ethereal and beautiful, just like the faint presence of a Heroic Spirit or a sprouting of a deep, emotional, yet youthful love.

So, please, get comfortable and give it a listen with me.

The start of the song is understated, as small previews of what is to come are obscured and slowly revealed by a low pass filter, simulating the feeling of being underwater. As the synths swell and the filter fully opens up. The abrupt cut pushes the first two notes of the bassline as well as adds extra emphasis to the vocal line as we jump straight into the verse.

Here is where I have to applaud Kenji Kawai's incredible arrangement: the song keeps its original intensity in the drumline with a complex hi-hat pattern and a lively kick. The way they are mixed here is wonderful; the hi-hats are very in your face, but considering the fact that they mostly occupy the high frequencies, they don't take away from anything melodic in the song's composition while adding that intense atmosphere. The snare, however is brought back and given reverb, making it appear distant. To me, the stroke of genius here, however, lies in the piano arrangement, wholly original to the anime version; the piano arpeggios in the verses are breathtaking. Taking a few steps up, before plummeting down the scale, these give a feeling of being swept up in something bigger than you, losing control, nothing staying permanent, the same feelings that Shirou experiences during the story. The synth choice for the little stings throughout makes the entire composition feel ethereal and magical, almost fairy tale-like; if you let go of it even for a second, it will disappear.

The pre-chorus functions as a sort of resting place; it always reminded me, in its mood, of Porno Graffiti's Melissa, the first opening to the 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist, giving it that wistful, adventurous feel. It is interesting to note that this is the portion of the song that has changed the most, compared to its VN counterpart. In the original, this part of the song is intense, almost suffocating with the amount of percussion present. It only serves as the buildup for the chorus, which it does excellently. Here, however, even the piano comes back to simpler chord hits, giving us ground to collect ourselves before we jump into the incredibly emotional chorus.

The strings swell as we are treated to the vocal line and lyrics that will forever encapsulate Fate/stay night as a whole to me:

The intense, yet soothing vocals of Sachi Tainaka as well as the beautifully emotional counter melody on the strings alongside the aggressive, desperate piano chords underscoring it all, make this moment transcendent. This entire post was inspired by the fact that for numerous times, when listening to this song in public, I genuinely cried during this chorus. It might be one of my favorite pieces of songwriting ever recorded. It will forever symbolize how much the original Fate/stay night means to me. It is an experience that is hard to forget. It's emotional, it's beautiful, it's ethereal, and it forever became a part of my heart as soon as I heard it.

shirou gets labeled as the cool guy who bottoms in kinou nani tabeta. we really need to pay respect to how much he cares. like the simple fact that he was so nervous about making the chef couple something they'd like only to realize their main purpose in coming to see him was to get legal advice and companionship with another gay guy, or his reaction to the celery going bad, his strong feelings towards Kenji that inform every aspect of his cooking. Sure he says "i'm just doing it because he's my best option" but like he doesn't need to force it - he just always thinks about Kenji when he things about cooking and he loves cooking. like he's just as sentimental as Kenji is - Kenji's just on the nose about it and likes that aspect of himself a lot more than Shirou does.

honestly for me it's part of why the tragedy of him being gay and having a rocky relationship with his family cuts so deep - this simply would not be the case in a society that accepted gay people.

Like you can see in every action that he did his best to cause the least disturbance for his family. Sure he thinks his mom's conspirical ways are annoying - he blames himself for that because his sexuality effectively ruined her mental health and caused her to seek out a cult (and tbh I can't help but hate her for that but i digress). He's sensitive to the things his mom likes - and then gets called a sissy for it - and he still cares about the sorts of food she'd need or how to cook well and other such feminine behaviors because he values her. And while they don't disown him - their connection is just so strained thanks to the fact they're homophobic and he's gay.

all this to say. shirou my grumpy grandpa i will literally care for you for the rest of your life and let you and your husband live like kings 😌
