Gilmore Girls S6.E05 “We’ve Got Magic To Do”
Emily: "You were a two-bit gold digger, fresh off the bus from Hicksville, and what made Mitchum decide to choose you to marry at the time, I'll never know. Hats off to you for bagging him.
He's still a playboy, you know? Of course you know. That would explain why your weight goes up and down 30 pounds every other month.
But these are ugly realities. No one needs to talk about them. Those kids are staying together for as long as they like. You won't stop them. Now, enjoy the event."

Tristin Dugray lore hcs
wc: 1k
warnings: mentions of broken/dysfunctional families, tristin's siblings both have drug problems, mentions of sexism and abortion (v briefly), mentions of cheating (also v briefly), tristin is not super close with his siblings, brief mention of DUIs (not tristin), I think that's it??
summary: lore on Tristin's family whipped up in my little plastic play kitchen by yours truly lol
a/n: I MISS HIM!!!! I SAW SOME GIFS THAT MADE ME SALIVATE!!!!! also!! in case it wasn't obvious the Dugray family is based on the real life Dupont family, just like how the Huntzbergers are based on the Sulzbergers
song recs: family jewels - Marina (ouch!), be here - palaye royale, everything is romantic - charli xcx
Tumblr media
The Dugray family have made their fortune as far back as the American revolution, starting with immigrating to America and manufacturing gunpowder for the American soldiers
This eventually led to the Dugray family owning one of the largest and most established chemical manufacturing corporations in America, DuGray
They invented a number of household names like pyrex, teflon, styrofoam, and even superglue, and also make ppe for people who work with or around chemicals
A while back, they also acquired two bank chains on the east coast, one of which is for east coast businesses, and the other is expanding slowly across america.
The Dugray family’s net worth is roughly 18.6 billion. I know.
Also, the Huntzberger family’s net worth is roughly 21.7 billion. I know.
Tristin mentions at one point that he has a “matching set” of baggage with Paris, and we know Paris’s parents are not at all close to her, or each other
We also know that her father is the head of a pharmaceutical company, and when her parents divorced it was in the newspaper
So yikes!
Anyway the only family mentioned by name is Janlon Dugrey, his paternal grandfather (I’m assuming if Janlon was his mom’s dad he would have a different last name yk)
So OBVIOUSLY I had to flesh things out a little
Looking at this family tree I made a while ago, Tristin has two older siblings: his oldest brother Royce, and his older sister and middle sibling Sutton
They’re both a bit older than Tristin, since his mom is their dad’s second wife
Truett DuGrey married Helena Holshire and had Royce, then Sutton
They divorced when Royce was around 7 and Sutton was almost 5 because Helena suspected Truett of cheating, and Truett suspected Helena of being a gold digger
Both were true
A couple years later, Truett is introduced to Blythe Ross while working on publicity for the banks his family as acquired
Blythe and Truett didn’t necessarily get along, but she could handle him better than most other women he’s met
They were actually introduced through Mitchum Huntzberger and his wife Shira, because Shira and Blythe are sisters
Surprise!
So Blythe gets pregnant and Truett can feel another Helena gold digger situation coming
That’s when Blythe tells him she can’t go to his work event because she has to go to a clinic
Truett stops in his tracks and realizes three things at the same time
Blythe is not in fact using a pregnancy to try and get access to his money
He loves his son Royce as much as he’s able to, but he’s already becoming apathetic and Truett can’t pass over the family business to someone with no drive or ambition
Royce is 10 by the way
Lastly, he realizes that this might actually be beneficial to him
So he convinces Blythe not to get an abortion and to elope instead
Once she gets her body back after the baby they’ll stage some wedding photos and claim it was from a little over a year ago so no one knows he had the baby out of wedlock
When she’s 18 weeks along, he schedules a private ultrasound to find out the baby’s gender
He tells her that if it’s a boy, everything will be fine
If it’s a girl, he’ll serve her annulment papers and nice fat alimony and child support checks to keep both of them out of his life
Blythe isn’t sure if she’s relieved or not when the doctors announce they’re going to be having a healthy baby boy, but Truett sure is
So he grows up watching his burnt out older brother and back bone of the family older sister navigate middle school and high school when he’s barely starting kindergarten
They don’t have any harsh feelings toward Tristin
Not really
They were just never that close yk
It’s like the pilot of umbrella academy, “we only see each other at weddings and funerals”
Except really, they only see each other when Truett forces them into whatever is going on with the family business, or to bail each other out of trouble
Royce is just waiting for his trust fund to kick in so he can fuck off and smoke weed in peace
Sutton is desperately trying to keep her image and life together while hiding her nicotine dependency and steadily growing pill problem from the public eye
And Tristin just wants to fucking feel something
His mom has been in and out of “med spas” and “wellness retreats” for so long he wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t recognize him, and the only time he and his dad talk is when he’s making charges go away
Sutton is engaged to this guy Clint
And he’s fine or whatever, Tristin hasn’t really talked to him much before
But he’s keeping his ear to the ground to make sure he treats his sister right
Sure Sutton can be condescending and a total control freak and act more like a mom than his actual mom
But she’s still his sister
So Sutton’s been off planning this huge wedding and trying to start some lifestyle brand for luxury dog beds and organic phone cases or something
Royce barely managed to keep his latest DUI for driving stoned under wraps but Truett still found out and sent him off to rehab
So Tristin starts high school at Chilton feeling almost lonelier than ever
Tristin aches for consistency, for stability
Thanks to Duncan and Bowman he sort of has that
And people like Paris that he’s literally been in school with since he can remember
It’s not that they’re particularly close, but he just likes that she’s always around when he’s going to and from class
There’s a few other people like that too, loose acquaintances that haven’t dropped out or transferred
They make him feel like even if everything else has gone to shit, he still has his winning personality
And he still has Chilton

MEgain's (isolated) future 😘😚
I thank God for the future courageous matriarchs, like the fictional Emily Gilmore, who will set MEgain straight in the coming decades. Unfortunately we won't be privy to these iconic moments, but they will occur and it's what she deserves.
There is something quite satisfying about watching multiple versions of self absorbed, smug, low rent harlots get their comeuppance through the "class" of people they worked to impress by stepping on top of innocents.
I dropped out of Stars Hollow & the Gilmore family about 20 years ago. As I catch up with the characters, I'm delighted to see multiple versions of the FUTURE social pariah, Mrs. Harry Markle Mountbatten Windsor-?______, receive her comeuppance.
Example #1: Shira Huntzberger, a dumb, smug wife who Emily Gilmore sets straight during a social function
youtube
youtube
#2-Serena, Renford's 4th wife, who Emily rejects at a DAR interview: "You're not gettin' in honey! You are never going to get in!" 😊

Unlike a lot of people here (because I'm ancient) I watched Gilmore Girls when it was airing on TV and rage quit twice, only to come crawling back eventually.
The first time was the S3 baby shower episode, at which point I just could not put up with Lorelai and her petty, childish behavior because Christopher didn't choose her over his pregnant girlfriend and was upset he was actually supportive of her. Well, big whoop, Lorelai that's probably why you shouldn't sleep with other people's boyfriends. I'm sure the example that you're modeling for your daughter here (mostly that it's okay to get entangled with men who are already attached because they were yours first) isn't going to be something she takes to heart a year and a half from now or anything.
Anyway, moving on. I rage quit the second time in episode 5 of season 6, "We've Got Magic To Do." This is the episode where Rory organizes a USO/big band themed party for the DAR, Richard is horribly disappointed that she has learned a new skill, and in the B plot Luke is upset when Lorelai encourages him to go camping.
It's not the worst episode of the season by a long, long shot. But I was bored by Luke and Lorelai's stuff, I have never really liked the upper class plot threads of the show so I was even more bored by Rory, and there were rumors about Christopher coming back and Luke's new secret daughter. I could tell it wasn't going to end well.
What got me to quit was Richard and Emily confronting the Huntzbergers, a plotline that made absolutely no sense
Emily and Richard were excited about Rory dating Logan not only because he is basically their ideal future grandson-in-law or because he possessed connections that might prevent Rory from becoming a penniless failed journalist like most of the people in her job field (funny how that turned out) but because they wanted to move up in their social circle.
However, Rory steals a boat, drops out of school, and seeks the refuge of her grandparents because Lorelai says she can't come home. She intends to party and slack off with Logan, but her grandparents insist that she work at the job they give her at the DAR and finish her community service hours if they're going to support her. (I will note that no one forces Rory to do this in AYITL and that's likely why she keeps spiraling: she can live off of the generosity of others and doesn't have to work, so she doesn't). You would think that Richard and Emily would have figured out that maybe Logan isn't the great influence on Rory that they hoped he would be, but alas....no.
The party is a huge success and you would think that Richard and Emily would be thrilled that Rory has pulled off this accomplishment, but no. Emily goes and rips into Shira, tells her that she's basically white trash and a scheming gold digger, and that she will never stand in the way of Rory and Logan's epic love story. Richard confronts Mitchum in the bathroom and accused him of crushing Rory's spirit and forcing her to seek an alternate career path that she is good at. The episode ends with him devastated that Rory is an adept party planner.
It still is ridiculous to me that two people who pride themselves on behaving according to social norms and maintaining the respect of those in their social circle would behave this way. It's deeply moronic and out of character. Why would they risk everything they've worked so hard for and jeopardize their social standing and Rory's to get back at two people they WANTED on their side? Pissing off Mitchum and Shira doesn't help Rory, it won't help her career if she does go back to school, and it's certainly not going to improve Logan and Rory's relationship. It's just putting words in their mouths that the writers want to express regarding their moral worth even though they've also spent the last season and a half focusing on how glamorous the rich kids sandbox can be. A month later, Jess comes back, encourages Rory to return to her life goals, and Rory breaks up with Logan and ends this plot thread. Hallelujah. No thanks to Richard and Emily, though, who probably could have made things worse for her in the long run career wise but didn't.
The whole thing was just dumb and dishonest and I hated it and still do. Plus, ASP was going to screw up Luke and Lorelai anyway, so why stick around for that? So I rage quit until the second half of the season 6 finale at which point I didn't watch again for another decade.

The difference though is that Paris learns from all of this and improves as a person when Rory is around; she moderates herself for Rory and Lorelai and never wished physical harm on them.
Emily is irredeemable, is awful to her help, and classist from the beginning (re: Shira Huntzberger).
Paris reacts as she does because she had no one to help her at all. Emily does this IN SPITE of all the people to help her.
gg fans when lorelai or rory are remotely imperfect: omg they’re so entitled, the true villains of the show!!!
gg fans when emily and paris regularly berate and bully people for no reason: omg #queen she’s so funny!!

The giant twelve seater table in the middle of the room was beautifully decorated. large clusters of orange chrysanthemums and sunny marigolds ran the length of the table, elegant white tapered candles in the middle. Each place setting had lovely bone china, a place card sitting atop each plate.
“Logan, there’s only eight place settings.” Rory whispered.
“What?” he whispered back, as he helped Orie into her chair.
“I. . . I don’t have a seat.”
Logan took stock of the table. “Mom, where is Rory’s seat?”
Shira covered her mouth. “Oh dear, are there not enough place settings? How did that happen? I’m certain I gave the maids Rory’s place card.”

I just realized that the actress who plays Tamara Jacobs in Dawson’s Creek and the actress who plays Shira Huntzberger in Gilmore Girls are one and the same. Wow she really has the market cornered on horrible women! :)

A new thought occurred to me while I was rewatching the Huntzberger Family Shanghai. You would think that the Huntzbergers would see the heir to a media empire being married to a journalist as an asset, and yet they dismiss Rory as a viable option for Logan because she wants to work. But what if they don’t want Logan’s wife to work not just because they want her to devote herself to promoting Logan and his career, but also because they’re worried that she wouldn’t have kids if she worked? Grandpa Huntzberger mentions that Logan has responsibilities to the family, and, as the heir, one of those “responsibilities” is going to be producing the next heir. And given that Huntzberger inheritance seems to follow male primogeniture (Rory says Mitchum is the oldest boy, but the second of 4 kids overall, and I think it’s safe to say that Honor is older than Logan), they’re going to want that heir to be a boy. So the Huntzbergers expect Logan and his wife to keep having kids until they have at least one son.
If Rory is too focused on her career and just doesn’t get around to having kids, that’s going to be a problem for the Huntzbergers. They might even think that Rory’s lower-middle class upbringing and her close relationship with her mom will make her specifically decide not to have kids because she doesn’t want them to be raised by nannies (the way Logan and Honor certainly were) while she works. I can’t see Rory (or Logan) having an issue with someone just watching the kids while she’s at work, but the Huntzbergers don’t know Rory well enough to know this.
It’s still old-fashioned and sexist, but the idea that a woman has to choose between work and kids is still common even outside the upper class, so this makes the Huntzbergers seem a little less like they’re living in Regency England.

When people want to hate Rory and throw it in her face the way that Logan treated her and try to justify it I get so mad. "Rory shouldn't be mad about Logan sleeping with the bridesmaids because she actually cheated on Logan and she broke up a marriage" I'm done when people say stuff like this! People on TikTok think they are something else with their Rory hate but they are not. Again Dean lied to her and manipulated her he told her his marriage was over and she repeatedly tried to get him to work things out with Lindsay but Dean was adamant that it was over and coerced her he cornered her in her room and told her what she wanted to hear in order to get in her pants! That was Dean's fault! When Rory kissed Jess in Philly she never mean't for anything to happen between them. Jess kissed her and she was surprised at first but then she pulled away and she still cared enough about Logan that she felt she couldn't have cheated on him the way he cheated on her. Even if you want to try to say "Logan didn't even cheat on Rory" he cared nothing about how she felt, he totally gaslit her and invalidated her feelings. He made her feel like she didn't have a right to be upset, but before he said he didn't think they were broken up and that he just told his sister they were broken up to get her off his back, then once he gets caught he changes his tune, and says we were broken up I didn't think we were together. Well which is it Logan because there are a lot of holes in your story! This is why it feels like so many Rogans hate Rory because I keep seeing takes like this. They say stuff like this or "he put her in her place" (referring to when he yelled at her at the pub where they met Jess) or "he called her out on her priveledge" no he was just being an ass and felt personally offended in both scenarios. Logan has no right to call anyone out on priveledge. He is more priveledged than most people and him and Rory are no where near close to being on the same level of priveledged. She wasn't raised with priveledged Lorelai ran away from that life and didn't want it for Rory. Yes the Gilmore's have money but even Shira told Emily "there's our money and then there's your money." Meaning the Gilmore's were no where near close to being on the same level of wealth as the Huntzberger's. Rory may be in that world but Logan is of that world that's a big difference. There is no justification for Logan treating her like shit! I'm just so over Rory anti's trying to use Logan's flaws to punish Rory and justifying her treating her like shit! It makes me livid! No matter Rory's mistakes he has no right to treat her like that! 😡

I am currently trying (for about the 100th time) to make a video about Logan and his fucked up family and while I was at it, I watched the scene (well, part of it) where Honor calls Rory at thanksgiving because Logan told her they’d broken up and I literally had to turn it off, because I was getting so angry. Which is kind of funny, because I can watch Mitchum and Shira being horribe parents without getting worked up about it, but Honor being just a horrible sister seems to be really getting to me. And she is absolutely being a horrible sister, I will not accept arguments otherwise. There may be room to argue about the degree of horribleness, but just so much in that phonecall is downright cruel towards her little brother that she supposedly cares about and who just told her he broke up with his first ever girlfriend. So to get rid of all that annoying anger I’m going to write out all the reasons, why I think what she did was horrible and hopefully once I’ve put it out there, it won’t bother me quite as much anymore.
So let’s start right at the beginning. She calls Rory up and introduces herself with “Hi, it’s Honor Huntzberger.“ Now, I think this is important to note, because firt of all she feels the need to introduce herself at all, presuming Rory won’t just regocnize her voice. But more than that, she clarifys she’s honor huntzberger. Not just hi, it’s honor, your friend who regularly shows up in your life, but honor huntzberger, your ex-boyfriends sister, who shows up in your life so infrequently I need to use my last name to give you context as to who I am. And I think it matters that Honor’s relationship with Rory seems to be fairly superficial (certainly I can’t remember any mention of them having hang out together outside of this phone call) and yet her reaction to having been told they broke up is to call her up and tell her how sorry she is about this news.
Because in contrast her reaction towards Logan (as she relays to Rory) is to wanna throw a lamp at him. Her first instinct after being told something personal from her brother, something that would usually carry with it the implication of being in pain, is to get violent with him. Gee, I wonder why Logan didn’t feel like telling her about the break-up.
She then tells Rory he’s a moron and his own worst enemy, clearly assuming that the break-up is entirely his fault, that there is no possible way Rory did anything wrong. Again, I wonder why he didn’t feel up to the task of telling his loving sister. I can’t imagine anything better after my first break-up than being told by my family what a failure I am and that this is all my fault without them even knowing any details!
And not only does she think this, which might be argued is just sisterly concern and can very well come from a loving and supporting place, she presumably tells this to him and then calls his ex-girlfriend, that she apparently barely knows, to make it abundandly clear to her that she is totally on her side and good riddance to that loser. That’s not concern, that’s disdain and a total disregard for his feelings. She clearly thinks Rory was good for him, but doesn’t seem to think much of him as a person at all (later calling him an idiot again, while making sure that Rory knows that it’s not directed at her).
She closes by saying “we can still go shopping”, again expressing an interest in Rory, her brother’s ex-girlfriend, that she doesn’t seem particularly close with, while completely ignoring what that might mean to her brother.
Now, this isn’t about whether Rory or Logan is actually at fault for the break-up. I have my opinions on that and I know that reasonable people can have different ones, but this is Logan’s sister. I don’t think anyone would expect Lorelai to react to being told Rory’s relationship ended by telling her how stupid she is and then to turn around and call her ex to also tell him how stupid rory is and how sorry she is about all of  this. Least of all without any idea of what actually happened.
As fas Honor knows, Rory might have cheated on him, made completely unreasonably demands of him or you know, it might have just been a case of we don’t fit anymore and no one is to blame. But her immediate default is to assume the worst of Logan to such a degree that it just becomes fact with no wiggle room.
Now given what she knows of Logan, I can understand how she might think in the back of her head “oh, I wonder if he tripped himself up there”, because she’s not entirely incorrect in saying, that he’s his own worst enemy. She’s not really correct either, certainly not when it comes to his relationship with Rory, but as his sister, that’s watched him for many years, I can see her having that thought. But I can’t imagine having it without any love and sympathy, without feeling for his pain and without allowing for the possibility that it might be something else entirely.
And I certainly can’t imagine feeling the need to call his ex-girlfriend, that I barely know, to sympathise with her instead, to tell her what an idiot my brother is, to express more interest in my non-existent relationship with her than in my actual relationship with my brother.
Because even if Rory was her best friend and she was stuck in the middle, there would be no need to go that hard on Logan, unless she just couldn’t stand him. She could tell Rory that she was sorry about the break-up, without making it clear that Logan has no value in her mind. She doesn’t have to wanna get violent with him, to justify her concern with Rory. She could just feel for both of them.
And it’s such a sad thought, that there was absolutely no where and no one safe in that family for Logan. Not even his sister, who based on her first appearance in season 5 seems to have an affectionate relationship with him, thinks he’s anything other than a screw-up and a failure. And not just that, but because of that he’s seen as undeserving of sympathy and care. No one’s gonna tell him, it’s okay, I love you, you have value, I’m on your side no matter what, let alone, hey, this isn’t your fault. No one’s even gonna say, you’re in pain and I feel for you, even if they might still think it’s his fault. They care so little about him that he doesn’t get that basic level of human empathy that honor seems more than willing to offer to this random girl she only vaguely knows, because he was dating her in the first place. I just can’t imagine growing up so alone and with so much constant negative reinforcment about how little worth you have as a person.
