Well, 2023 was... busy, mostly. I started a new job in late 2022 and it's taking a looot of my time, which sucks because I've had a looot of ideas for art and fic and not nearly enough time to do them all justice! As you can see by the monthly samples, fandomly speaking my life (and brain and heart) was just taken over by one fandom (especially one ship, and especially one character), which... actually I won't apologise for! Vox Machina and Critical Role gave me so many emotions and fuel for creating stuff (and even playing TTRPG for the first time in my life!!), it's been great. Here's to another year of being unabashedly ridiculous 💜

At first I was very much a drarry-only guy but in the last couple of years I've been reading a variety of pairings and/or multi-fandomly. Here are some faves from the HP fandom:

prongsfoot! I love them. I love them angsty and tortured and dying from lust and deeply in love and sexy. What a ship. What a ship.

dralbus. Give me the age gap and the hot conflicted tension pls!

I'm also here for some Sirius/Harry dirtybadwrong smut.

jegulus. I've read some recently and I enjoyed the dynamic portrayed.

Other fandoms:

berencel (Captive Prince). I want MORE of this ship.

Emralt (Geralt x Emhyr from the Witcher) This is Astolat's fault because I read her Witcher fics and loved them and fell head over heels for this ship.

John Childermass/John Segundus from Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. I'd never think to put these two together but then I read a bunch of amazing fics and saw how perfect they are for each other.

Having a really interesting time with Kate because like. I'm generally a lot more fandomly inclined than she is but she's gotten a lot more fannish about this one; I've been into the show a lot longer but she's watched it from the beginning whereas I started watching in the middle of season three; she knows all about cast dramas and leaked scripts and publicity events and everything I've learned about that kind of stuff has been against my will; we both ship Buck and Eddie but she's Committed to that ship and wants Tommy to Go Away while I am Team Threesome; etc etc so it's like we're basically speaking the same language when she texts me about it but like... different dialects or something

there are two very specific moments that made me go “oh no i ship mike/michael now”:

(1) literally not even a scene with either of them, but Mikey complaining that he’s basically unable to sleep without Edgar, how awful it is when him and Edgar have different sleeping shifts, etc. in the middle of a bunch of scenes that start with either Mike or Michael being woken up by the other

(2) Michael going “hey just offering, do you want to integrate consolidate?”, which is what really solidified “oh my god you’re plural” to me, and oh my god i have a Thing for intra-system shipping (fun fact: the first thing i could be said to have Fandomly Shipped™ was Ryou/Yami Bakura :V yep, problematic abusive ships from the very start!) (especially where it leads to the question of “wait what the fuck are we to each other, because clearly no normative frameworks work here”, as literally comes up later with “Wait, are we brothers? Wait, are you allowed to say you love me??”)

Since it's V day/Virgin Insecurity Day, what are your favorite confirmed couples in media?

This may be a very small list because usually the shit I like don't ever get to be canon and if it does it isn’t for very long.

Kim Possible & Ron Stoppable: After years of shipping 2 characters together only to get shut down over, and over, and over again this was the one instance where a show went “You know what? We ain’t trolling you this time. It’s exactly what it looks like”. When the So The Drama movie went down it truly felt so surreal and strange to actually see something I wanted become a reality. It’s kind of a personal highlight for me fandomly speaking and that’s how big of a deal it was. They will always be at the top of that very list for me. Drakken & Shego are also in there as well.

Superman & Wonder Woman: It's not the status quo canon but whenever we get the adaptations where it is it's always a good time for me. I do appreciate Diana and Steve Trevor in the movies, however.

Joker & Harley Quinn: Toxic, abusive, manipulative and every kinda fucked AND YET I loved that shit in Suicide Squad. I shipped that shit in the animated series having not read the comics and always wanted to feel vindicated in some way for actually buying into that pairing and then came Suicide Squad to feed my starving-ass. And then in classic fashion I was told to go fuck myself and the world shut that whole thing down.

Caulifla & Kale: A couple so legit they got people out here concussed thinking they ain’t a couple. Two characters incredibly powerful in their own right and glow up even more so together ‘cause their fusion ain’t nothing to fuck with. The first real Saiyan women the series actually showcased and as long as it took to happen they were worth the wait. Sure; the show wants you to believe Goku can beat them but that’s all just nothing but fan fiction.

I.. I self ship( via a girl/nb insert, im just nb) with a boy character who is fandomly assigned gay. Hes not canonically anything but i do hc him as bi. Any advice for how to deal with those in and out of the self ship community who say im invaild cause they think hes gay? It hurts alot because hes also a comfort character and he makes me so happy.

It’s perfectly fine to self-ship with a character with no canon sexuality! Just because others hc him as gay doesn’t make you or your feelings for him invalid. People can be real jerks and I’m so sorry people have invalidated your feelings before! I bet you two are the cutest!

One thing I realized while traveling with my fandomly this past week -

None of us ship, write, or integrate ourselves into the Frozen franchise the same way. Some of us have evolved over the years. Some sit sideline until inspiration hits. Others (me) were slow to find the light (tumblr) in the first place.

I, myself, wrote straight-ship pieces for Elsa for years before delving into female relationships for her. I fell into the Honeymaren suit after the second movie, and I still write frohana one shots.

My friends don’t necessarily enjoy my content.

They all have their own preferences, side ships, and analysis’s. We all enjoy different things about Frozen, but not one of us ridicules or downgrades the others interests because of our dislikes. We are all open minded and understanding. In terms of creative works, we are supportive and find common ground.

I have never been active in a fandom before (outside of FF.net). I had heard rumors about the dark sides of social media and shipping feuds. I was aware things could pick back up when the second movie released, and now I’ve experienced some of that divide myself.

But if it is possible for four different people with different interests and unique ways of contributing to the fandom to travel internationally together; why can’t others? Why can’t we all find that common ground?

Humans are, by nature, different. All of us are unique and have individual ways of looking at things.

I don’t enjoy Elsanna content, but I hold no resentment toward someone who did or currently does. I can look a little wider with my interpretation. “Hmm, perhaps they believe the only one for Anna is Elsa and vice versa.” - I can agree with that even platonically, and wow, look at that... I’ve found common ground.

Then there’s the ability to crossover- shipping outside of the Frozen realm. I, personally, cannot. I struggle with AUs, and my mind doesn’t let me take characters out of their time periods. I don’t know why, but it is hard for me. Despite this, my friends enjoy this kind of writing. I cannot do it myself, but I can support their creative endeavors as a friend.

I know this is a long winded ramble about something most people probably don’t care about, but I wanted to share my thoughts.

I have many friends on here who love the idea of ace-Elsa. Others gay-elsa. Elsanna. Kristanna. Bi-Elsa. Gay-Kristoff. AU-Frozen. Frohana.... the list goes on and on. And I love and respect each one of those friends, and their individual interests.

Respect is a powerful thing. However, love is even stronger.

I love what people create on Tumblr, and I thank you for sharing what you make even when others may not agree.

I think at home and in our ‘real-life’ we’ve all been subjected to some kind of rejection. It seems silly to carry over that hostility into a place where we’re all bonding over the same thing, but just in different ways.

For whatever reason it found you, I am glad you love Frozen. I love you all for loving Frozen, and I hope you know that Frozen loves you back.

what/who are in your top 10 obsessions as of lately (like as in heavily-fandomly involved with?)

Interesting question. I love & hyperfixate on many things but this does not necessarily translate into creating content/consuming fandom material publicly/talking about it on my public social media, if at all? I might adore something but my average follower might have no idea. When I obsess over a series/ship/char there’s often incentive to keep it private for fear of fandom tainting my experience, not feeling the need to consume anything because the source material itself is enough, or I don’t feel I can do it justice in my style? Idk. It’s also hard to be super obsessed with many things at once ngl.

My biggest 10 obsessions rn off the top of my head (whether public or not) are probably, in no particular order:

1. Yunmeng Brothers from MDZS, yes I drew shitloads of them and it was terrifying, this is the worst kind of public hyperfixation I’ve ever had

2. Fugo (& Narancia) / Vento Aureo in general

3. ShinoYama/anything to do with Gundam: IBO , I’ve been in this hell for 2+ years now & I’m still so deep I’ll probably never leave lmao

4. Kakegurui, specifically Ibara Obami don’t @ me I’m weak for his fuckboy chr design and it’s HOSOYAN MY FAV. Season 2 was EXCELLENT I am thrilled, dare I say I enjoyed It more than the first just cos it’s got tropes I ADORE (plus, this shithead of a lad).

5. Dororo. Hyakki, Tahomaru & Dororo are my kids forever.

6. SHIKATEMA / Naruto in general but UGH SHIKATEMA ARE SO GOOD I stan forever, as a ship or individual characters ❤️

7. Daiya no Ace I LOV THE NEW ICHINENS I’m really enjoying Act II.

8. ....Daddy Zoldyck, his terrifying wife and disaster children. I love the Zoldyck clan. Crazy Rich Assassins. They’re the main thing I care about in HxH.

9. Recently watched Free! Starting Days and ugh I love the Kirishima brothers and Asahi and MAKOHARU FOREVER lmao I never stopped loving them but watching that movie last month for the first time unearthed all my feels (been a long time since S2 aired) and I’m gonna catch up on TYM / S3 once I’m done w/ cons this month!

List 3 shipping tropes you love 

The “Almost Kiss”

As a writer, this is one of my favorite romantic things to write for. You think something is going to happen. The scene is building to that moment. The eye contact, the breathing, how the characters are slowly leaning closer, maybe someone is having second-thoughts and is wondering if this is okay, maybe someone is letting the other know that it is okay, and both characters are so near each other both metaphorically and physically that it almost feels like the right thing to do.However, the intimacy isn’t fully-realized in that moment. The scene is emotionally and maybe even physically charged, but there’s still that air of hesitation and one or both characters concede to that before bridging the last few inches between them. As much as a kiss scene or the Big Damn Kiss is important, depending on what the story is about, I like to draw things out a little more. Kissing to me is something that I don’t want to rush, especially if someone is going to kiss someone that they care for a whole lot. Kisses can signify a lot of things about where a relationship is, where it’s going, and the conscious act of holding back and saving that kiss for later speaks volumes of its own.It adds a touch of emotional-depth into what’s going on. That right now is not the best time to do it, but at least both parties know that the other is okay with it. Also, FYI, I feel like there’s more value to an almost-kiss than an actual-kiss.

Couple’s Dance

Oh my gosh. I love this so much. Whether it’s a waltz, a tango, dancing in your lover’s arms while soft jazz music serenades in the background, feeling open and feeling free with the person that you love, and just having the time of your life. That’s freakin’ goals. I’m loving the intimacy that scenes like this can come with. This is one of my top 5 scenes to write for. I love a good couple’s dance and showing the progression and nature of a relationship through how they lead and follow the other. Also as a visual writer, it’s a stunning and compelling way to illustrate how much trust and value the characters have in each other through actions rather than words. It’s just a tender, sweet moment.

Emotional Vulnerability

One of the reasons why this appeals to me so much is because I, myself, have difficulty with being emotionally vulnerability. It’s incredibly hard and it’s easier to just wear a facade and not express what you’re actually feeling inside. So when a character that has this does find someone that they feel comfortable enough to open up to and just be their whole, true self, that means so much to me.Emotionally vulnerability is not a hop, skip, and a leap away. It takes time, it takes dedication and building trust, it takes time getting to know each other and ourselves, and what I love about it is that it can’t be rushed. Everyone reaches emotional vulnerability at different rates and some people get there sooner than others. The point behind emotional vulnerability is taking things at your speed while being mindful of what your partner’s speed is. It’s not a compromise. It’s taking the time to understand each other at a deeper level and letting each other grow naturally into the relationship rather than turn things up a notch and speed-run the entire thing.Like I mentioned before, I have a difficult time with emotional vulnerability. Talking about feelings, matters of the heart, and being open and honest is quite taxing. And even moreso when it’s rare for me to find fictional relationships out there that go through and engage with emotional vulnerability. This is something I hold onto, dearly. For me to find a ship that has this and it feels just right…I can’t describe in words how much that means to me.It’s why a ship like Odazai is something I don’t want to let go of. It appeals to the very nature of who I am as a person and in a sense, it’s personal reassurance.

Quick & Dirty

I know some young people follow this blog, so I hope I don’t have to explain what this means. I’ve come to accept that I’m an old-school romantic that resonates more with slow, long-term relationships than what’s prevalent today. Not to say that modern fictional relationships can’t be slow or lead to something long-term, but I more commonly see the “quick and dirty” version than the former.Depends on the fandom, depends on the ship, depends largely on the preferences of what people want to create out of a ship. It’s just that my preferences don’t align and that’s okay. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t like a certain ship or how it’s commonly portrayed and written. That’s why more than one ship exists so you can find something that you resonate more to.

Infidelity

Or in layman’s terms, cheating.

If there’s something going on between two characters, I’d rather have them talk it out and be civil and honest with one another. Rather than going behind someone’s back and….yeah.

Certain Kinks

We don’t aim to kink shame on this blog. You got your own kinks, I have my own kinks, a lot of us more or less have a preference for kinks. Putting that out there, I don’t want to know what your kinks are. However, some of y’all have asked me what my kinks are. So yeah, Tumblr is an interesting place.

It’s all a matter of preference, really. There’s just some that make me uncomfortable. That’s it.

If the ship is physical, reversible or not? 

Hell yeah, reversible all the way.I’m familiar that ships tend to have a designated lead and follower. There are other terms to use, but I’m using these ones because shoot...I’m wary about using the other terminology. But the thing about overly using those fandomly-conceived or even canon designations is that it evokes this feeling of a power imbalance. For instance, two characters can never feel equal to each other. It starts to go into a trend where one character is a subordinate for the other, and that’s a WHOLE conversation for another ask.If a ship is physical and there’s a reversible nature to it or if a fic writer gives the nod and shows/portrays it, there’s not enough words in the English language to describe the respect I have for that writer. It’s not necessarily about taking turns, but it gives a more down-to-earth, realistic element to the ship and the intimacy involved.

How important is the sexual part (if any) of your ship? 

If you’ve gotten this far and have ready everything, I think you’ll understand that I don’t care/give a damn about the sexual part of a ship. If it’s there, it’s there. If it’s not, it’s not. I care more about emotional intimacy than anything of a sexual nature.

Being biromantic may play a part into why I answered in the way I did, but who really knows?
