"Kyoko-chan!" Haru called as she waved to her best friend. "We have a lot to do today!"

Kyoko wasn't positive what Haru was referring to, but if her best friend needed her help she'd be more than happy to oblige. "What is it, Haru-chan?" She politely smiled, curious what the other girl needed help with and why they'd have a lot of work to do.

"Tsuna-san just informed Haru that tonight the boys are having a bonfire." Haru nodded and fished out a list of groceries she needed to get for the party.

Kyoko smiled, she loved the parties the Vongola put on, even if she and Haru were put to work all the time. Haru's creativity would always be welcomed with open arms when situations such as this arose. From Namahage to Princess ball gowns, Haru was an expert seamstress and her love for sewing could be heavily utilized here tonight. "It's a Halloween costume theme."

"Hahi? Costume bonfire?" Haru looked puzzled. "Is this another one of those traditional Vongola parties that Reborn-chan throws all the time? The ones that never make any sense?"

Kyoko smiled and nodded. "Mhmm, Reborn-chan's the one who said it was to be costume themed to begin with."

"Ah, we need to get started then." Haru excitedly gathered her purse. "We should shop for materials and supplies first."

The first thing the girls went for was food. If this was Halloween themed, they wanted to go all out. They grabbed hot dogs, marshmallows, chocolate bars, graham crackers, hot cocoa mix, various ingredients for treats and desserts and enough candy to fill a bowl and treat bags too for the younger ones.

"Is Reborn-chan joining us?" Kyoko asked, curious if they needed to purchase some espresso or not. Reborn liked his coffee strong and if he was coming too then Kyoko wanted to be prepared.

"Yes, we're going to need coffee, sushi and milk as well." Haru smiled, she knew who those items were written specifically for. It was no surprise Yamamoto and Reborn would make requests for something like that.

"I see that smile, Haru-chan. You like him don't you?" It was no surprise who the milk and sushi would be for, they were Yamamoto's favorites after all.

"Hahi!" Haru hadn't thought she'd be caught so easily. But it was true. She'd gotten over Tsuna and realized he was and always would be only her friend. However she hadn't expected the Namimori baseball star to catch her attention next. However when she analyzed things, it was often Gokudera or Yamamoto who had been there for her more often. "Don't tell anyone, Kyoko-chan." That was Haru's own way of admitting it before getting even redder in the face.

She hadn't really noticed it but the more time they spent together, in the future and the present, she realized Yamamoto wasn't just attractive and athletic but kind and protective, and had a little dangerous charm of his own. He wasn't a full blown Yankee like Gokudera, but he had his own allure and charm and that's what had drawn her in. Maybe she should make him some chocolates for Valentine's next year? That is if no one else already scooped him up. Yamamoto was quite the popular guy, having a fan club of his own as well, it honestly made Haru a little bit jealous. "We'll have to keep it cold, we can't let something like that spoil."

"Should we ask his dad to make the sushi? It would give you an excuse to go see him when you pick it u-" Kyoko was cut off swiftly by a very flustered Haru.

"Kyoko-chan! You should ask him. If I ask it'll look suspicious."

Kyoko just smiled. The bet was on. If Haru wouldn't ask Yamamoto out, Kyoko would do it for her at the bonfire. "Okay."

"Hahi!" Haru was shocked at how calm and collected Kyoko was about the situation. She should have never said that, Haru regretted it. If Kyoko asked him for her she'd look like a total wuss now! But who could blame her for being intimidated, he had a fanclub of his own. There was no way Haru could hold a candle to those girls.

They picked up decorations as well it wouldn't be Halloween themed without Halloween decorations. "Do you think we have enough to put up?" Haru asked, and just as she had, Kyoko nodded and the doorbell rang. The boys had arrived just in time to help set up.

Tsuna and Yuni walked in holding hands and even though Haru had been over him for quite some time now, it still stung a little, but the sting was soon replaced by something warmer. Well at least slightly warmer.

"Woman…" Gokudera almost growled until Kyoko reminded him to be nice.

"Hayato…" She scolded. "Haru-chan's our friend. Be nice or no cookies later." Kyoko could be terrifying when she wanted and what boyfriend liked being denied his own girlfriend's baking? That was a threat in itself right there.

Haru had crossed her arms and huffed, puffing out both cheeks and turning her nose up at him, until she heard that soothing voice, as calm and gentle as rain on a autumn evening, "Maa Maa, it's alright. He didn't mean any harm, Haru-chan." And there was that smile that melted her and made her mind draw a blank and made her swoon.

Just like the warmth of a bonfire, Yamamoto's smile warmed Haru's heart and it didn't take a genius like Gokudera to see it.

"Kyoko, why don't we go join the Tenth and the others for a seat around the fire. It's going to get crowded soon, everyone's coming tonight." That was Gokudera giving the hint to leave Yamamoto and Haru in at least a little bit of privacy. He knew the two were close and after tonight, he hoped he and Kyoko could be a little closer too, and maybe the bonfire would be the first step to starting a spark between them.

Taking his hand, Kyoko smiled and followed the Storm guardian out. As for Yamamoto and Haru…well they could catch up when they were ready, he was still kissing her.

You already know my bias for Haru, but you've also turned me on to the possibility of other ships for her like 1886 and that while I will always be a 5986 stan, you've shown me 2786 could have had potential had it been written better and even 0086 if they'd let her meet Enma and he had a chance at getting to know her. So you've actually gotten me to go from diehard 5986 to everyone (within reason) and 86.

I will forever stand on my soapbox and state that Amano created her to be a highly compatible character to then further showcase 'look at how great this girl is who could be compatible with so many others-- and yet she only has eyes for Tsuna'. The foil.

I love 1886, I love 8086, 2786 is... under the correct circumstances and the stars aligning JUUUUUUST RIIGHTTTT, I need not say anything about 5986. 0086 is a secret guilty pleasure ship of mine.

As we know I also like Byakuran with Haru (ehehehe), and I've shipped Belphegor with Haru (EHEHEHEHE).

I know no limits, I only know fun challenges to tackle. Glad that I could get you to see the light and see other fun 86 ships kekekekekekeke. 5986 really is important to me though for many nostalgic reasons so I totally get being diehard for them. I am sadly a person who knows NO CHILL and said ehehehehehehehehehehe YUS. There was a time I liked Basil and Haru if I recall (not in rpc).

‘Ship Bias’ Yamamoto? Curious to see what there will be

For Yamamoto I'm pretty basic, I like 8059 (Gokudera), 8018 (Hibari), TYL8029 (Squalo), 8086 (Haru), and 8084 (Basil)

If you've ever wondered why the primary Windows drive/partition on modern PCs is usually called C:, it's due to when IBM first launched their 8086-based IBM Personal Computer, it didn't even support the use of harddrives, which were both rare and quite expensive at the time, and instead usually shipped with one or two 5.25-inch disk drives, for which the first drive letters of A: and B: were reserved.

When the PC and its multiple clones finally gained official harddrive support a few years later, they were given the first unreserved drive letter available, which was C:

Though the modern Windows x64 PC has practically no actual hardware or software in common with its distant ancestor, the first drive partition usually still defaults to C: unless otherwise specified to this very day.

it's part of my wider 'NotSoTiny' project, a 16 bit ISA taking after the 8086. The name comes from the original plan to use a TinyFPGA BX, but it never shipped so I switched to a FireAnt.

on the left side with the mess of jumpers is 1 MB of ram (the fpga has ~15kB onboard), and on the right are a couple of SPI driven displays. The TFT up top has a microSD card slot on its SPI bus too. Some buttons will go in the center.

there're three github repos, one for the architecture, which has the documentation, emulator, and assembler, one for the HDL side of this project, and one for a compiler for a language i made for the purpose of making a compiler (at least when i get around to putting it on github)

Yes but no but yes.

Look, space shuttles are primitive beasts. Not because they were designed in the 70s and were supposed to be retired after a few years and replaced by a better thing (though that was the plan), but because making things be the most simple version of themselves means theres less to go wrong,

Back in the 90s NASA was begging for old 8086 CPUs to put in the shuttle. For any real computing they just velcro’d a laptop to a wall.

Why would the shuttle, the only nearly actual spaceship we had using a CPU that old?!

Cosmic Rays.

Even memory at the time would get bit flipped by radiation from the ceramics used, and space is full of radiation. CPUs would output garbage because some charged particles blipped through and fucked with the logic gates on these tiny circuits.

But 8086? Fuckin’ HUGE transistors. You have to really zap ‘em to make them flip their flop. And NASA knew what happened to them in space. They had data on failure modes.

So when you see the enterprise TNG flavour with giant iPad consoles with garbage UI and people having to grope the screen, you known sometimes they were firing phasers because someone had chicken grease on screen.

Meanwhile, TOS Enterprise you had physical redundancy. You got an EMP from that dang space anomaly? Well all your switches were still working. Ok your computer core is slagged but you can still run stuff electromechanically.

You bet Spock has tripped a busted switch with one of Rands bobby pins.

Uhura’s got multitools stashed all over the ship.

Kirk’s got paperclips in his pocket and it annoys the shit out of the Klingons.

You know what?

I’m no longer holding Star Trek or Star Wars “accountable” for their clunky-looking sixties-and-seventies future technology.

Why?

Because the Enterprise is off on a years-long voyage through space. There’s no Verizon store, no Radio Shack, no Geek Squad out there. If the Klingons fire photon torpedoes and the bridge shakes and Spock’s head bangs against the fancy iPad72 touchscreen and cracks the glass, the ship’s toast. If Han Solo’s fingerprints get all over the starchart and the touch-calibration is off by half a centimeter, the Falcon is going right into a star. But if Mister Worf accidentally twists the command knob too hard and pops it off, he can just screw that thing right back on and it will keep working. Dust gets in there? Take it apart and clean it out. All the plugs are big and universal, all the power cells are functional and have a decent battery life, and nothing is built to expire in the next six months so you have to buy a new one.

That tech isn’t anachronistic or suffering a bad case of Zeerust–it’s practical, effective, and it works. Apple tried launching its own space exploration craft, it had to come back for full repairs within three months, and then it had to be upgraded over the next two.

But this? This is just good, long-lasting, fully-functional, and reliable craftsmanship.

minji’s the oldest of five kids ( three girls and two boys ), and as long as she can remember, the only constant in her life has been her mom, her siblings and their tiny apartment, with its grey, dingy wallpaper and thin walls ( her dad passed away when she was five ). they don’t have much – her mom manages to get some money by selling kimbap in the local market – but she grows up loved and happy.

her quirk actually manifests itself pretty late – around her fifteenth birthday – when she accidentally uses it on one of her siblings. needless to say, she’s terrified of it – she’s never seen anything like it, and her mom ( who’s one of her only sources of information at the time ) never mentioned anything about powers of any sort. minji keeps her mouth shut about it all while trying to get as much information as possible – over the years, she’s found out the general gist of it – but still kept it under wraps as she knew she couldn’t afford to be shipped off to hosu and leave her family behind.

and then – she uses her quirk to help another girl. it’s late at night, and the man had been following the other for at least fifteen minutes – so minji just – makes him go away. she hurries back home hoping that no one saw what happened, but the police is at her doorstep as soon as the next morning and she has no other choice but to go with them.

so now she’s here ! brand new so she’s still a lil bit lost when it comes to – well, everything.

the biggest difference is that now she’s pretty wealthy because of her quirk – she’s still not used to having so much money, and a lot of her old habits still bleed through every now and then.

can be a bit reserved around new people and in new situations – especially now, since this is the first time she’s ever been apart from her family for longer than a day. she does like being around people though, and can be quite the social butterfly if you give her enough time to relax around you.

big mom friend energy !! definitely the designated driver for every party. she’s used to being the ‘responsible one’ but pls make her see that it’s okay to let loose and have fun without worrying about how others are doing.

can be kind of naïve in the sense that she doesn’t really know anyone on the island yet – so she’ll probably believe 99% of the things you say, especially if you’re a hosu native.

BIG on food – and is actually a pretty decent cook. will definitely try and use you as a guinea pig for a new recipe tho.

is actively looking for a job! in the meantime, she babysits and picks up any small jobs she can find.

The History of AMD and ATI, and my History with Them

A Brief History of AMD

AMD is actually the oldest company in this pair. They incorporated on May 1st, 1969. They started manufacturing microchips for National Semiconductor and Fairchild Semiconductor. In 1971 they entered into the Random Access Memory (RAM) chip industry. In 1981 they entered into a technology exchange with Intel. It led to AMD becoming a second source for Intel's 8088, 8086, and 80286 chips.

In the early 90's AMD and Intel's relationship soured. It started when Intel refused to divulge the 80386 technology. A legal battle ensued with AMD winning the case in the California Supreme Court.  Intel canceled the technology exchange contract. Mainly because they wanted to be the sole producer of their X86 line of microprocessors. AMD began focusing on clones of Intel microprocessors. Intel then sued AMD over intellectual property rights of the X86 microcode. AMD solved the problem by creating their own clean-room microcode for X86 execution. They released their AM386, AM486, and AM586 to an eager user base because of the AMXXX series lower prices.

In 1996 AMD released the K5 to compete with Intel's Pentium. The K5 was a RISC microprocessor running a X86 code translation front end. It was more advanced than the Pentium. It had a larger data buffer and was the first chip with speculative execution. Advanced technologies that are still incorporated in modern microprocessors.

AMD purchased NextGen in 1996 for their NX based X86 technology that led to the AMD K6. The AMD K6 is a completely different microprocessor from the K5. It still used an X86 code translation front end, and added microcode execution for MMX. The K6II added 3D-Now technologies. This extended microcode aided GPU processing, and seemed to work best with ATI based GPUs. The K6 and K6II competed with the Intel Pentium II

In 1999 AMD released the AMD K7 Athlon microprocessor. The Athalon used a parallel X86 code translation unit, and more processing registers. The Athalon had  the new SSE microcode set. It also had the more advanced MMX microcode that shipped with it's competitor the Pentium III.

There are several versions of AMD Athlon microprocessors. In fact there are even current ZEN based architecture chips bearing the Athalon name. In 2006 AMD Purchased ATI. We are going to put a pin in AMD for just a moment and talk about ATI. We will get back to AMD in a bit.

A Brief History of ATI

Array Technologies Incorporated started as a Graphics Processing Unit development company. Founded in 1985, they manufactured OEM (Original Equipment Manufactured) graphics chips. Their primary customers were IBM and Commodore. By 1987 ATI grew into an independent GPU manufacturer. ATI's most notable early GPU was the Wonder series. It remained a mainstay in desktop computers until 1994 with the release of the Mach 64. The Mach 64 led to the 3D Rage featuring the Mach 64 2-D rendering engine with elementary 3D acceleration. ATI’s next generation card the Rage Pro was the first competitive GPU to 3Dfx's Voodoo. In 1999 ATI released the Rage 128 which provided DirectX 6 acceleration.

In 1996 ATI entered the mobile 3D acceleration market with the Rage Mobility GPU. In 1997 they purchased Tseng Labs to help with GPU manufacturing. This led to the development of future Rage mobility GPUs, as well as the ATI Radeon GPU that was released in 2000.

The ATI Radeon is a completely new design from the Rage series. It offered DirectX 7.0 2D and 3D acceleration. The Radeon GPU uses a series of stream processors (or cores) that allows for scalable GPUs. This is like Nvidia's CUDA Core design.

AMD purchased ArtX the designer of the Flipper graphics system in 2000. Flipper is built into the NEC graphics system on Nintendo GameCube and Wii systems. In 2005 Microsoft contacted ATI to develop graphics for the XBox 360. In 2006 AMD purchased ATI.

Back to AMD

With the Acquisition of ATI Technologies AMD retired the ATI brand name. ATI's GPU development assets are now known as the Radeon Technology Division. AMD also spun off their chip manufacturing facilities into Globalfoundries. This turned AMD into an Intellectual property, microprocessor, and GPU developer.

In 2007 AMD released their APU mobile microprocessor series. Called the Fusion series it was a marriage of AMD Athlon mobile CPUs and ATI mobile GPUs. They use an integrated PCI express link on the SOC (system on a chip) package.

AMD was a major competitor to Intel and Nvidia until 2011 with the release of the AMD FX series. Known as Bulldozer it was meant to be AMDs high powered server and desktop CPU. They provided advanced hybrid speculative execution, and multi level branch target buffering (multi-threading). In 2015 AMD was hit with a false advertising suit. This is due to the fact that their FX-series 8-core microprocessors were really a 4-core, 8-thread chip.  In 2019 AMD settled the suit. They offered bulldozer owners a coupon towards new CPUs.

In 2014 AMD hired Dr. Lisa SU (PH.d. in electrical engineering)  as CEO which led to the development of Zen. In fact it has led to a competitive push against Intel and Nvidia. In 2017 AMD released the Ryzen microprocessor. It is based on the ZEN micro architecture. The Zen Microarchitecture wasn't quite enough to compete with Intel's current CPUs. They were comparable though, and with their lower price they became popular. In 2019 AMD released the Zen 2 architecture with the Ryzen 3000 series CPUs.  This year (2020) AMD released a series of mobile APUs based on the Zen 2 architecture. The Zen 2 CPUs and APUs match or outperform Intel's  9th and 10 gen CPUs and APUs at a much lower price.

AMD has begun to put pressure on Nvidia with NAVI and Big NAVI. They utilize next gen technology, and Big NAVI will compete with the Nvidia RTX 3000 series.

My History with ATI and AMD

I have had several AMD (ATI) GPUs, but I don't really know what they are. For the most part as an ex-Mac-user I chose systems based on my usage case, and ignored the specs. Other than the PowerMac 8500, which got a complete overhaul. I did make some upgrades to the other Macs like upgrading the RAM and in the case of my Mac Pro I upgraded the CPUs. So there are only a couple GPUs (on the Macs) and a CPU of note.

My first ATI GPU that I actively chose was a Rage 128 PCI for Mac. I purchased it in 1998. At the time I was trying to get a few more years out of my PowerMac 8500. I upgraded the RAM, hard drive, and added a Sonnet Technologies Crescendo G3 500, and I installed the Rage 128 PCI. I used this upgraded rig until 2003 when I replaced it with a new PowerMac G4.

In early 2007 I purchased a Mac Pro for my masters level video production classes. I didn't feel the GeForce 7300 GT was powerful enough for On-The-Fly-Rendering. I bought the Radeon 5870 with the much larger 1 GB of video RAM which made video editing faster and more efficient.

In 2019 I decided to rebuild my workstation PC, and move away from Intel CPUs. I purchased an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X as my workstation CPU. The CPU is a video encoding and raw data processing beast. It is a real trooper.

In 2020 I purchased an eGPU from Sonnet Technologies called the eGFX Breakaway Puck. The model I purchased is the Radeon RX560. I use it with my 2017 HP Spectre X360. It works great. You can read my review here (https://waa.ai/e6Ui).

Next year (2021) I will likely buy an AMD powered laptop. This is an attempt to move away from the Specter and Meltdown exploits that plague Intel CPUs.

Conclusion

It's easy to say that AMD and ATI have helped shape the modern computer. Whether your computer has AMD parts or not the competition pushed Intel, ARM, and Nvidia. Computers would likely have been different without them.
