 “Myrrh won’t bite you.”

 Aegon balked at her genuine tone, her frank assurance; she could see the disbelief in each newfound twist of his expression. His lips parted. His arms dropped to his sides, punctuated with white-knuckled fists. To him, Myrrh might as well already have bloodied teeth.

 And then, unexpectedly, he spoke his own offer: “Pet Sunfyre, then.”

 His own expectations were bound to be disappointed. He expected her to pale, to shift and reconsider and doubt. He expected her to change her mind and leave him be.

 She did not want to leave him be.

 “Fine.”

 Prince Aegon was accustomed to another breed of woman – lovely and courtly, mutable, vibrant from their ribbons to their bones. And she was a stone, unable to be moved.

 All he had for her in return was a quiet, “Oh.”

The laugh that bubbled up from Aegon’s throat was bitterly amused. “Well, if you do win the joust this year, your only choice is to name Lady Alyse the Queen of Love and Beauty.”

 Shock bolted through her like lightning, forcing her hand to clamp down painfully tight around Aegon’s.

 Mallory nodded. “I intend to.”

 His response was one she hadn’t expected, but she now knew better than to expect the obvious from Mallory Royce. He was unlike any of the other four. She could not quite anticipate his actions. She could not think of where his next blow would land.

 It was both dangerous and exciting.

 “You…” Aegon sputtered, slipping his hand out from beneath Alyse’s tight grip to hold onto his cup for dear life. His knuckles paled, and as he leaned in, he licked the wine from his lips. “You’ve already made plans to win! What about everyone else? Do you believe Ser Royce will win the joust?”

 Alyse curled her hands over the edge of the bench, gripping both her skirt and the stiff seat beside her thighs. If Aegon’s grip made his knuckles pale of color, hers became bone. Do not make this difficult, she begged. Pride kept her from giving voice to her pleading. Pride kept her shoulders rigid and her breaths even, regardless of the sudden swirl of anxiety in her guts. How many times must I remind you that I am doing this for us? Let him win. Let him name me. Let him marry me. It will change nothing.

Alyse felt a sudden pressure on her arm – a gentler touch than she expected, though surprise still left her breath catching. Queen Alicent’s apology was a wan smile that stretched right up into her glazed brown eyes.

“A beautiful child,” she offered.

“I would have named her differently.”

Alicent’s brows rose with an upward tug of curiosity. “Oh?” the queen asked, her fingertips lingering at the hem of Alyse’s sleeve. “I think that Harla is a lovely name. It will suit her as she grows.”

“Harlon and his brother took turns fucking a woods witch on the full moon in exchange for immortality,” Alyse muttered under her breath, quietly enough that even Alicent was forced to lean in closer to her in order to hear. “I would have named my child something with… less historical significance.”

Not Harla, not Visenya, not any name that might tie an anchor to her tiny ankle.

She would have named her Sera or Tyla or Clare, and Alan would’ve fawned over them both for hours, and the three of them would have buried prophecy together, with dirt beneath their nails.

Alyse dipped into a curtsy, her head bowed, before watching as both the queen and her shield departed.

King’s Landing might not be some distant thing forever.

Happiness might actually be a creature that Alyse could hunt down, and the arrows she’d spent years making – her quieter weapons, honed for survival after living so long amongst her hurricane of a family – would be of use in a royal court. The queen must have seen such a thing inside of her.

She was a hunter. Queen Alicent would make good use of one with her talents – not in the Kingswood, but in the Red Keep.

So, steps were taken. Alliances, built. Pieces were moved across the board by a careful hand. But rather than letting herself run rampant, she stamped down the thrill rising in her belly with a single thought.

Fingers trip. Friendships end. Ankles twist. You know that better than anyone.

 A sharp tug at the skirt of Alyse’s dress stopped her short, knocking out her wings, tethering her to the bench carved with drips of ivy. She twisted to look down at her mother, and she saw naught but tension in the woman’s heart-shaped face – from her broad mouth to the lines around her eyes to the furrow of her brow.

 Lady Leonette’s sharpened stare was proof that dagger could be carved from amber.

 “You will not leave the Bounty until you are married.”

 There was more there that remained unspoken, a quiet slip of something that sounded like, "So you will not leave.” In her mother’s eyes, the ultimatum was an insurmountable one. Her daughter was impossible. Her daughter was unappealing. Her daughter would die a bitter maid, and her body would feed the Bounty for longer than it would ever feed a babe.

 There was no relief to be found in the queen, either. For all of her talk of stealing Alyse away, there would be no theft, no breathless flight under cover of darkness. She required Lord and Lady Barren’s permission to take on their daughter. And for as long as Alyse remained unmarried, that permission would not be given. Her mother did not play with lies, not in the way she so often did; Leonette made a game of power and truth.

I cannot be free of them until I find a tighter chain, she thought, her eyes falling shut to ward against the glare of the midday sun. Warmth wept into her skin, but there it found a lonely cold to contend with.

“Speak plainly!” Alyse shouted. Outside of the armory’s closed doors, she heard something fall to the floor and clatter. The sound was so sudden that it made her jump. When she found her words again, they were quieter, but no less earnest. “I’ve indulged you for too long now, father! I’ve figured the rest out! Give me this.”

This time, when Lord Bryor set Stormcaller aside, it was done properly for display. He rested the greatsword onto the trio of pegs crafted specifically for the task of cradling the weapon high on the stone wall, and then, he turned to her.

 “Your marriage to a Northern lord would cleave the prophecy in two,” Bryor told her. The unadorned truth did not ache less, and the cut it carved into her still bled. “Everything that I did to you, I did for our family. Every lie I told for you, every green-blooded lord I sent away, every heart I broke… even yours, I acted so that House Barren would remain standing.”

 She’d begged him to tell her.

 Steeped inside of her anger, Alyse wanted nothing more than the liberation she expected from her father’s honesty. She had not stopped to wonder about its wounds. Her response was little more than a sigh.

 “Then I was your sacrifice.”

𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐈𝐏𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐍 — a House of the Dragon fic.

The Bounty was a place of promise and healing, and as Viserys Targaryen’s health began to well and truly decline, his Queen decided that a visit to the seat of House Barren might prove beneficial to her husband. Rather than travel all that way for no more than a dip in a pool, it was decided that they would host a tourney there, as a celebration of both their twentieth wedding anniversary and the twentieth nameday of their son, Aegon. There, they were introduced to the Lord and Lady Barren, as well as their four children — the cautious Ser Quintyn, the rebellious Alyse, the calculating Cyrus, and touchy Trysta — unaware that one of them would be following them to King’s Landing at the tourney’s end. Out of them all, the one most unaware of Alyse Barren’s pending impact upon their family was Aegon himself.
