NANA Week 2020: Day 3, More Meta on Another Favorite Hachi & Nana scene
So I’ve dissected two of my other favorite Hachi and Nana moments (here and here) so here’s another. ♡
So this is one happens in chapter 14 and it sets up a whole lot for the future of both young women. We’d just had our expectations turned on our head, regarding Hachi/Shoji and in turn we have our expectations turned on our head again because we don’t actually expect Hachi to have a tryst with a celebrity. Nana already has that camp covered, as the cooler and more collected character, destined for fame. Hachi is supposed to be the typical, average girl next-door. Sure she has an affair with a married man in high school, but we don’t expect her to find her so entangled with the celebrity lifestyle like we foresee for Nana.
Moreover, this comes immediately after Nana and Hachi’s conversation on Hachi’s childhood bedroom floor, in which Nana promises to be honest and more emotionally open with her. Nana has always been a woman that is very open with affection with her fans, but Hachi isn’t just her fan. Hachi is someone that Nana has promised to be honest with.
And it’s for Hachi that Nana invites within their shared home the man she more or less considers the devil. Because Takumi represents Trapnest and just as much as Nana’s insecurities lead to believe Reira was the one that stole Ren away from her, Takumi is just as culpable. It’s Nana after all that is quoted as saying “Trapnest means “The Trapped Den” Once we enter it, we can’t get out by our own means I thought that that name could only come from a man who love having power over other.” Whether or not this is only a revelation that Nana realizes after Takumi has stolen Hachi from her side just like he (and Trapnest) did with Ren, it is Nana who invites him in the first time.
This is likely combined with a lot of factors (she’s back with Ren, and in the early days she was likely in the honeymoon phase and not quite so jealous of Trapnest who’d stolen him away) but I don’t think the meaning is lost on Nana. Afterall it’s just a few chapters later, where Nana walks in on the opposite scene - Hachi opening the door to invite Takumi in.
This is the beginning of Nana’s miasma of doubt and insecurities, as she loses all the trust she had in those around her and her jealousy and abandonment issues all come crashing back down on her. Nana begins a crusade to win Hachi back to her side, to steal her back from Trapnest.
And Nana was the one that invited him in, and it’s likely part of the reason that Nana continues to resist the intrusion of people like Miu, Asami, and even Shin into her and the rest’s lives - she doesn’t need all of this extra competition. Because, in part, everything for Nana is a battle to win people’s affection. So much of her delight and passion as a singer is the love and devotion of her fans. She wants and craves that perception of love that she was denied as a child.
But to return to this moment, preceding Takumi saying, “Welcome home, Nana” to Hachi (as this is the translation from the official translations and I think it is more accurate) it is a surprise to the reader that Takumi is there. Hachi is outside the door, priming herself only to meet Ren for the first time and she like us isn’t expecting this surprise.
Before he opens the door, we see Nana tells whoever is opening it that her name is Nana, not Hachi. She’d obviously been referring to her by Hachi the whole night, but of course Hachi gets to be greeted by her own name when Takumi surprises her. It’s in that evening party with Ren and Takumi that Hachi stops objecting to the nickname Hachi because Ren calls her, other than when she and Nobu start dating. Takumi, to my memory, of course never calls Hachi Hachi because like Jun, he isn’t part of that group. He doesn’t need to differentiate between the two women and he’s more likely to just refer to Nana as “Ren’s woman/girl.”
This actually isn’t a criticism of Takumi for once - because once again, it was Nana’s choice to tell him that information. It was Nana that invited Takumi to have that sort of intimacy with Hachi that Nobu denies Hachi during their relationship. Nana denies accepting Takumi into her friend group and the rights to the group’s nickname for Hachi, accidentally makes him more intimate for Hachi. Especially since in the meantime, Hachi is out that door thinking about how to introduce herself as Komatsu Nana, not Hachi.
Now let’s set aside Takumi for the rest of this discussion, because it really is the emotion between Nana and Hachi that I love this scene for.
When you look at the panels - how the images carry, it goes from the reveal that it’s Takumi at the door, to Hachi’s eyes filling with tears... to Nana. Because it’s not Takumi that Hachi is crying over. It’s Nana’s expression of love for Hachi. Hachi has been working hard for Nana, doing everything she could to get Ren and Nana back together. Even before she was Nana and Ren’s go between with her phone, it was Hachi that took Nana to that concert. She mad that dream about Ren at her door, handing her those tickets and Hachi actually managed to get Nana to that concert. So Nana returns the favor and gets the guy Hachi had said she’d actually wished she dreamed about being at her door in her dream and all Hachi can think about is gratitude towards Nana.
Because Hachi is still so fresh off her break up with Shoji. She’d originally been like “I don’t need love” and immediately got jealous of Nana’s relationship with Mai. Because Hachi craved that love and validation and she’d just been hurt at the sight of Sachiko in the store. Her own feelings of insecurity led her to exploding at Nana and Mai unfairly.
Of course Hachi apologized, since she was in the wrong. But Nana’s gift of letting Hachi see the man she’s such a big fan of is all the affection she needed. She still felt hurt and betrayed by Shoji. Watching Nana and Ren get back together was what was inspiring Hachi to think about getting back into the dating scene, but I think until this moment Hachi still felt so unloved because of Shoji. “I felt your love more than a million ‘thank yous.’” Hachi narrates in the future - because this was Nana’s big expression of love to Hachi.
“I made her cry,” Takumi claims but it’s not him that’s made Hachi cry. Not really. That was Nana’s work and Nana knows it - look at that smug expression Nana has on her face when Takumi first opens the door to Hachi. She didn’t even have to look up to know that Hachi was happy and she was delighted to do so. Honestly, Hachi would have been happy with Takumi’s autograph like Nana promised. But this was something special. I didn’t bother getting a clipping of it, but Hachi continues to narrate saying, “I just burst into tears... ‘cause I realized this dream-come true was my special reward from Nana.”
It’s all about how Nana made Hachi feel in that moment, even years later. This is the moment that Hachi really and truly met her future husband and father to her children. And yet, just like with everything else, Hachi continues to relate it all back to Nana.
Like I already said, the official translation actually says that Hachi felt Nana’s love - not her friendship - that moved her And that wording is so much more powerful, the word love. Even if we don’t put our shipping goggles love has such a strong impact. Hachi and Nana have only known each other for... a couple months at most. And yet Hachi felt it.
And moreover, the official translation doesn’t just say “That’s what pleased and touched me”.... It says “You made my day, my year, my life.” And sure we can interpret that as being the pivotal moment Hachi met Takumi which changed the entire trajectory of her life... But it was also such an expression of love that I’m sure Shoji never did for her (who yelled at her for daring to clean his apartment for him) and a romantic act that Takumi fails to achieve due to gaslighting her whenever he did anything remotely sweet. This was the grand gesture of love Hachi needed and wanted from a lover.
The chapter ends on that last panel above, with Nana getting up from her seat. The next chapter picks up a bit later on in the night, with Hachi in the kitchen cooking, and Nana assisting. I can only assume, though, that Nana threw an arm around Hachi (if not actually hugging her) and teasing her for her tears.
Hachi’s too nervous to exchange more than a few words with Takumi outside their conversation about tomatoes (though Hachi does enjoy listening to all the insider details of the celebrity lifestyle.... also learning that Takumi shits too lol). Honestly, Hachi has a more significant conversation with Nobu on their beer tbh. But when Hachi and Nobu get back, Takumi is gone (probably a booty call) and Hachi is upset that she didn’t get Takumi’s autograph. Ren promises to get her one and we all know what happens after that. If she’d gotten that autograph that night or Ren hadn’t remembered his promise right in front of Nobu... Who knows what might have happened? Even if Hachi and Takumi still had their one-night stand, who knows if Takumi would have seeked her out again if not for Nobu’s reaction?? And that all goes to show that this one, simple and sweet symbolic gesture on Nana’s part for Hachi changed so much.
And yet, looking back, all Hachi remembers is the love she felt from Nana. (╯︵╰,)

An Elemental Spread
In the Oxford Dictionary, the Elements are defined as “any of the four substances (earth, water, air, and fire) regarded as the fundamental constituents of the world in ancient and medieval philosophy.”
For the purpose of this Spread I would like to include a 5th, more elusive, element: that of Spirit.
This Spread is made up of 4 mini-spreads and a 1 card-draw, each one providing you with more insight in to the elemental forces at play in your life right now.
I recommend completing the whole Spread to get a balanced overview of how the Elements exert their influence and see how they might interact with each other - but you can also use each mini-spread separately, if you want to focus on just one area that you believe needs some attention.
For those less practised in Tarot: do not be deterred, the exercise is broken down in to bite-sized components so everyone can give it a try, just take it step by step. The suggested exercises at the end are just that: suggestions. Feel free to discard or incorporate them as you see fit!
Everything you learn during this exercise can be implemented in other spreads you complete, providing more insight and depth to your Readings.
The Spread
Start by dividing your deck in to 5 piles: Separate all Major Arcana cards first and put them in one pile. Then divide the Minor Arcana cards in to their respective suits.
1. Earth ~ using Pentacles only!
The element of Earth is represented by the suit of Pentacles. It stands for the Physical World, Material Possessions, Abundance/Poverty, Money, Education, Employment, Craftsmanship, Skills, Homelife, Housing and Health.
Earth can be rich and fertile, allowing for abundant crops; It can be dry, parched and brittle, providing little nutrients for what we plant; Our roots can reach deep down, providing us with stability and strength; or we can find ourselves on shaky ground, giving us little comfort and security.
1) Current State: My Field of Dreams.
2) Negative Influences: What is eroding my soil, causing instability and stress?
3) Positive Influences: What is nourishing my soil, making it fertile to sustain my accomplishments?
2. Air ~ using Swords only!
The element of Air is represented by the suit of Swords. It embodies Thoughts, Intellect, Knowledge, Action, Power, Communication, Judgement, Analythical Powers, Excitement, Anger, Anxiety and Defence Mechanisms.
Air is a powerful driving force, it can carry a seed as well as an aeroplane; it can be a forceful wind or a gentle breeze; a typhoon laying waste to everything that surrounds it or an unseen force driving the rainclouds from the sky; it can push a ship firmly towards it’s destination or blow it off-course all together.
1) Current State: The Wind in my Sails.
2) Negative Influences: What stormclouds are obscuring my view, preventing me from thinking clearly?
3) Positive Influences: What fresh winds blow away the rainclouds, allowing my truth to shine through?
3. Water ~ using Cups only!
The element of Water is represented by the suit of Cups. It stands for Emotions, Intuition, Relationships, Sensitivity and Receptiveness.
Water can appear as a steady river flowing freely through your life; be reduced to a slow trickle or evaporate in to thin air; it can turn in to a crushing waterfall or a raging torrent, sweeping away everything in it’s path. It can choose the path of least resistence whilst simultaniously wearing down the hardest rocks. It is restorative, adaptable, receptive and cleansing.
1) Current State: My River of Life.
2) Negative Influences: What acts like a dam, preventing my river from flowing freely?
3) Positive Influences: What could prevent my river becoming stagnant, helping to keep the water running clear?
4. Fire ~ using Wands only!
The element of Fire is represented in the suit of Wands. It stands for Passion, Inspiration, Ideas, Creative Force, Sexuality, Enthusiasm, Risk-taking Behaviour, Temperament and Energy.
Fire can be imposing or terrifying - it can rage, frighten, consume and destroy; or it can be comforting and warm, inspire and illuminate; it can provide protection or cause chaos in it's wake.
1) Current State: The Fire in my Soul.
2) Negative Influences: What causes my fire to either die down, or burn too bright so it consumes everything it touches?
3) Positive Influences: What sparks my fire and feeds it, keeping a warm, steady glow?
5. Spirit ~ using Major Arcana only!
The 5th element of Spirit is often forgotten about, but it is the one that binds the other elements together and can shape, control, direct, unleash or temper them.
To clarify what I mean when I speak of “Spirit” here, I will provide you with some suitable synonyms:
Words like Psyche; Ego; Life Force; Soul; Essential Being; Inner Self; Anima; Ethos; Essence; Temperament; Disposition; ... any or all or a combination of these terms can be used to describe this Elemental Force we all feel within us but can find so hard to define.
Draw one Major Arcana card to identify your driving force, that what helps you create and maintain balance between the elemental forces influencing your life, your well-being, actions, thoughts and personality. This card is neither Upright nor Reversed, as you should take both sides in to account - it represents both your Strengths and what you need to be Mindful of.
I have included a picture of my own spread to give you an idea of what the whole may look like:
Suggested exercises to get even more out of this spread:
A• Write down your findings after each spread completed, so you have a clear overview of all 5 elements and can compare them, see how they might interact, counteract or reinforce one another. This will tell you where your Strengths lie, as well as which areas can use more focus and developement.
B• Put your Spirit card next to each individual spread and interpret how this driving force might influence each element.
C• For each separate spread, add up the number value of the cards and simplify until you have a number between 1 and 10, this gives you the numerological value for that spread and shows you where you are in the development of that particular area of your life. Court cards have no numerological value so should be counted as “0”.
Example:
Ace + Page + 10 = (1) + (0) + (1 + 0) = 2
Or: 8 + 9 + 6 = 23, then 2 + 3 = 5
0 = Infinite Potential - embodies all that is and all that will be - wholeness - no separation - everything is possible.
1 = Beginnings - Potential - Inspiration - Gifts
2 = Duality - Choices - Balance/imbalance - Reflection
3 = Chaos - Birth - Synergy - Growth - Creativity
4 = Stability - Power - Rest - Organisation
5 = Conflict - Competition - Adaptability - Forced Growth
6 = Success - Harmony - Transition - Compassion
7 = Strategy - Planning - Victory - Discipline
8 = Strength - Control - Evolution - Release
9 = Contentment - Contemplation - (Re)Evaluation - Luck
10 = Completion - Satisfaction - Fulfilment - Germination - Karma
D• Add the Numerological Value of your Spirit card to that of each separate element and compare the outcome to the exercise above to see wether the energy of your Spirit adds value to that element in your life or diminishes it. This will show you wether you need to work on your Spiritual Energy or if you are on the right track.
For example: The numerological value of your Fire Element is 2 and your Spirit card is the Hierophant with a value of 5. The overal outcome is 7 so your Spirit Element has a positive influence over your Fire Element.
If the numerological value of your Water Element is 9 and you add the value of your Hierophant Spirit card, this would make
9 + 5 = 14 and 1+ 4 = 5. So your Spirit Element has a significant diminishing effect on your Water Element.
In practical terms this might mean that you need to watch out you are not repressing your emotions by focussing too much on the objective, rational side of things - it might be healthier to allow yourself to have an emotional reaction to an issue, just let yourself feel it and then let your emotions flow through you.
E• The number of cards used in the collective Spread is 13, with a numerological value of 4, denoting stability and power.
Add up the numbers of all 13 cards in the Spread to get an overall idea of your current position in your Life Cycle.
~~~•~~~•~~~•~~~•~~~•~~~•~~~•~~~•~~~
*NOTE:
A lot of sources will also attribute male or female qualities to each of the Elements, describing Earth and Water as being Feminine (passive, receptive) and Air and Fire as Masculine (active and imposing).
You can do so if you wish, but I have chosen not to. My personal feeling is that these notions might be outdated and we lose nothing by taking away these supposed gender specifications - in fact what we could gain is a deeper understanding of fundamental “sameness” of each individual Soul.
Spirit knows no gender, we all carry each element inside us, inextricably blended, albeit in different proportions. We are all just people in the end, and that is what I choose to focus on!
**NOTE 2
Please be aware that some Tarot Decks work with a modified system, where they attach the suit of Wands to the Element of Air and Swords to Fire. So should you be using decks like The Modern Spellcaster’s Tarot, The Art Nouveau Tarot, The Shapeshifter Tarot, The Dreampower Tarot or The Celtic Dragon Tarot amongst others, please make the required adaptations!
Father, I want to live a life of obedience to You. Make me an instrument of Your peace. Teach me to love even my enemies. Give me the strength to wage peace when what I really want to do is wage war. Today, I choose to surrender my stubborn will to You. I lay down my emotional weapons and choose peace. Be glorified in my relationships, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen
[Psa 135:1-18 NLT] 1 Praise the LORD! Praise the name of the LORD! Praise him, you who serve the LORD, 2 you who serve in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God. 3 Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; celebrate his lovely name with music. 4 For the LORD has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel for his own special treasure. 5 I know the greatness of the LORD--that our Lord is greater than any other god. 6 The LORD does whatever pleases him throughout all heaven and earth, and on the seas and in their depths. 7 He causes the clouds to rise over the whole earth. He sends the lightning with the rain and releases the wind from his storehouses. 8 He destroyed the firstborn in each Egyptian home, both people and animals. 9 He performed miraculous signs and wonders in Egypt against Pharaoh and all his people. 10 He struck down great nations and slaughtered mighty kings-- 11 Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kings of Canaan. 12 He gave their land as an inheritance, a special possession to his people Israel. 13 Your name, O LORD, endures forever; your fame, O LORD, is known to every generation. 14 For the LORD will give justice to his people and have compassion on his servants. 15 The idols of the nations are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands. 16 They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see. 17 They have ears but cannot hear, and noses but cannot smell. 18 And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them.
[1Sa 9:1-14 NLT] 1 There was a wealthy, influential man named Kish from the tribe of Benjamin. He was the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 His son Saul was the most handsome man in Israel--head and shoulders taller than anyone else in the land. 3 One day Kish's donkeys strayed away, and he told Saul, "Take a servant with you, and go look for the donkeys." 4 So Saul took one of the servants and traveled through the hill country of Ephraim, the land of Shalishah, the Shaalim area, and the entire land of Benjamin, but they couldn't find the donkeys anywhere. 5 Finally, they entered the region of Zuph, and Saul said to his servant, "Let's go home. By now my father will be more worried about us than about the donkeys!" 6 But the servant said, "I've just thought of something! There is a man of God who lives here in this town. He is held in high honor by all the people because everything he says comes true. Let's go find him. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go." 7 "But we don't have anything to offer him," Saul replied. "Even our food is gone, and we don't have a thing to give him." 8 "Well," the servant said, "I have one small silver piece. We can at least offer it to the man of God and see what happens!" 9 (In those days if people wanted a message from God, they would say, "Let's go and ask the seer," for prophets used to be called seers.) 10 "All right," Saul agreed, "let's try it!" So they started into the town where the man of God lived. 11 As they were climbing the hill to the town, they met some young women coming out to draw water. So Saul and his servant asked, "Is the seer here today?" 12 "Yes," they replied. "Stay right on this road. He is at the town gates. He has just arrived to take part in a public sacrifice up at the place of worship. 13 Hurry and catch him before he goes up there to eat. The guests won't begin eating until he arrives to bless the food." 14 So they entered the town, and as they passed through the gates, Samuel was coming out toward them to go up to the place of worship.
[Act 27:9-26 NLT] 9 We had lost a lot of time. The weather was becoming dangerous for sea travel because it was so late in the fall, and Paul spoke to the ship's officers about it. 10 "Men," he said, "I believe there is trouble ahead if we go on--shipwreck, loss of cargo, and danger to our lives as well." 11 But the officer in charge of the prisoners listened more to the ship's captain and the owner than to Paul. 12 And since Fair Havens was an exposed harbor--a poor place to spend the winter--most of the crew wanted to go on to Phoenix, farther up the coast of Crete, and spend the winter there. Phoenix was a good harbor with only a southwest and northwest exposure. 13 When a light wind began blowing from the south, the sailors thought they could make it. So they pulled up anchor and sailed close to the shore of Crete. 14 But the weather changed abruptly, and a wind of typhoon strength (called a "northeaster") burst across the island and blew us out to sea. 15 The sailors couldn't turn the ship into the wind, so they gave up and let it run before the gale. 16 We sailed along the sheltered side of a small island named Cauda, where with great difficulty we hoisted aboard the lifeboat being towed behind us. 17 Then the sailors bound ropes around the hull of the ship to strengthen it. They were afraid of being driven across to the sandbars of Syrtis off the African coast, so they lowered the sea anchor to slow the ship and were driven before the wind. 18 The next day, as gale-force winds continued to batter the ship, the crew began throwing the cargo overboard. 19 The following day they even took some of the ship's gear and threw it overboard. 20 The terrible storm raged for many days, blotting out the sun and the stars, until at last all hope was gone. 21 No one had eaten for a long time. Finally, Paul called the crew together and said, "Men, you should have listened to me in the first place and not left Crete. You would have avoided all this damage and loss. 22 But take courage! None of you will lose your lives, even though the ship will go down. 23 For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me, 24 and he said, 'Don't be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What's more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.' 25 So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said. 26 But we will be shipwrecked on an island."
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
“May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (Heb. 13:20-21)
THE YORKSHIRE WEREWOLF'S TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED, UNEXPLAINED OR UNTRUE YOU DECIDE ? (Parental guidance recommended)
Let me take you back in time. The year was 1865, and the world was shocked by the news of tall hat wearing American President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while judging the forerunner of “America’’s got Talent” ( he would bang on a large a gong if the act was shite) at a theatre somewhere in the States. But this was not the end of the the President. Documents and a photograph album found in the loft of a recently renovated cottage situated in the east coast village of Hornsea would shed a light on an amazing episode, up until now hidden from public view. Our story begins when Mrs Jemima Mulkinshaw, 82 the owner of “Cheese Cottage” near Hornsea contacted me, the story teller, with her frankly earth shattering claims. The following are the actual words spoken by the old person but transposed into words on a word processor document for your benefit. “ The builder found these documents hidden in the roof. Probably by my Father, who I am certain never wanted me to find them, in fact he wrote on the folder ” Don’t let my ‘effing daughter see these here documents". I have read and studied the contents of the file, and I have had their authenticity confirmed by a former antique expect who wished to remain anonymous, the star of many BBC TV series, like “Tat in the Attic, Antiques autopsy” and an episode of “Lovejoy”. The contents alter history as we know it. Here begins the stunning story. It was 1865 again, and Abraham Lincoln, tired and frankly pissed off with being President, wanted out. He couldn’t abdicate as he wasn’t British and his vanity stopped him from just saying I quit, so he contacted an old wrestling buddy ( Lincoln had won 300 wrestling matches and only lost two) Andrew Roake, who was head of a shady government agency specialising in relocation of witnesses. Abe poured his heart out according to the document, and basically needed to escape being a husband, a family man and the first Mister of America. Andrew came up with a plan; he would hire an out of work actor to fake an assassination while Abe was in front of lots of audience members. Then they would smuggle him out of the country to start a new life in Australia. It would cost a few dollars but clever Abe had stashed tonnes of confederate gold and silver in secret location’s so dosh was not a problem. So the scene was set, and John Wilkes booth resting actor carried out the fake murder, and the body of the 'dead’ president was exchanged with a lookalike corpse while Abe was swiftly extracted from the area and arrived at the docks were the tea clipper 'HMS Bell’ and its crew waited to set sail for the new new world of Australia. The ship’s cargo was made up of food, water and a shit load of gold and silver. As Abe watched from the crows nest as the ship set sail he wrote “….as I spied the land of the free slowly fade into the horizon I had tears in my eyes as I realised I had not laughed this bloody hard in years! Good riddence America and G'day Australia !” For the rest of the world Abraham Lincoln had died a hero of the people, unfortunately in the confusion, John Wilkes Booth failed to escape and went on the run. 12 days later, he was was shot by Mr Boston Corbett a Union soldier and great great grandfather of Harry Corbett the puppet master of sooty and sweep fame. Then fate would deal a mighty blow. A massive storm at sea battered the HMS Bell and the ship was thrown miles off course. Then the main sail was ripped from the mast and the ship was dead in the water. With no other options Captain Kirk gave the order to abandoned the ship. A cry of “women and children first!” went up. As there was only the cabin boy Harry Otter and the mysterious Lady fanthorpe (who was in fact abe in disguise) the two boarded the lifeboat along With A chest containing everything abe could shove in it. Due to the weight, no one else could fit in the small boat and swiftly Abe cut the ropes, leaving an angry mob shouting abuse as Abe forced young Harry to paddle faster. The cross dressing ex president and the bemused cabin boy watched in horror as a mini typhoon pulled the ship down into the doldrums and a watery death awaited all the crew. Lloyds of London received this telegraph message; “++++ URGENT+++WITNESSES SAW SHIP SINK+++STOP+++ALL CREW SUCKED OFF+++STOP+++BY STRONG WIND+++STOP+++THE BRAVE CAPTAIN WENT DOWN ON THE BELL+++END” 31 days later, Abe found himself on a beach. His small boat had finally ran a ground on dry land. He had managed to survive on meagre rations. And after 5 days at sea, abe found Harry rummaging through his trunk. “ YOU AIN’T NO LADY MISTER, I DO BELIEVE SIR THAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY MR LINCOLN WHO I BELIEVED TO BE DECEASED, SAY IT AIN’T SO?” Abe wrote that it was this exact moment that made him feel a failure, a fraud, a film flam man etc.That the truth spoken from this innocent chubby young child…hell’s bells that kid is so fat…. Abe fired the small Derringer pistol; both bullets hitting poor Harry right between the eyes. Thank’s to Harry, Abe managed to survive the ordeal (he wrote later that he tasted of lamb?). Now, washed up on an unknown island, Abe used up all the strength he could muster, dragging his trunk up the beach before hiding it in a cave. He then reluctantly changed from the ladies outfit into a ships crew uniform he found in the boat and ventured inland. Soon he was met by a young woman smoking fish near a cottage by the sea. Abe assumed this was commonplace as tobacco products might be hard to find in the new world “TIS this Australia sweet lady?” She puffed on her Clay pipe then replied “'Tis it buggery, this is God’s own country, Yorkshire! You yanky Twatt! ” Abe wrote how shocked he was by this revelation. Miles away from the new world of his dreams and his vast fortune lay at the bottom of the sea. The woman he was conversing with was Gertrude Mulkinshaw, a spinster living alone in “Cheese cottage”. Abe introduced himself as “John Smith” a sailor who had jumped ship and was on the run from the American navy. They began to talk and soon found that they had a lot in common. Both had wooden false teeth, Gertrude was All Yorkshire woman’s wrestling champion (undefeated). She said she made a living making curd cheese and smuggling opium and absinthe from France. Although she was not a conventional beauty, over the coming months,Abe and Gertrude fell in love and after a year they married in Hornsea Parish Church. They had a daughter and continued to live in the secluded cottage. Twenty years passed, and a strange American traveller turned up on the doorstep of “cheese cottage”. He was invited in by a suspicious Abe as Gertrude and her daughter had gone to Whitby to sell some cheese and opium at the local market. The man handed Abe a letter of introduction. It was from his old friend Andrew Roake . Inside the envelope was a newspaper clipping from the Hornsea Gazette, the local newspaper. It featured a sketch of Gertrude and Abe attending the Hornsea women’s wrestling competition, which was won by Gertrude. In the letter, which was attached to the clipping, Mr Roake had summised that Abe could have survived the sinking of HMS Bell and was alive and living here, in England. If it was Abe, Roake asked if he would he be kind enough to help the person delivering this letter who was another of his clients who wished to start a new life. Abe asked the stranger his name “ I am, Mr president sir, William H Bonney, better known as the outlaw Billy the kid.” Billy went on to tell a familiar story. He too had become sick of all the bullshit going on around him and had paid Andrew Roake a large amount of stolen cash to relocate him before some young buck tried to shoot him. Billy then dropped a bombshell. Roake’s intent was not honourable. The double dealing son of a bitch planned to blackmail Abe or reveal his true identity.These two infamous men sat drinking warm beer, eating Yorkshire curd tarts and exchanging tales from their previous lives until Gertrude arrived home., Abe was ready to introduce his new friend and reveal his secrets. Earlier, he told her, the two men had gone under cover of darkness to the beach to retrieve Abraham’s trunk hidden all these years from the cave. Then Abe told his wife the truth about his real identity. At first she thought he was smacked off his tits on opium but when he showed her the contents of the trunk, documents, medals and shit loads of gold and silver coins. She believed. It was during that night the three of them agreed a plan. Billy would telegraph back to Roake saying it was all a case of mistaken identity. For this, Abe would split his treasure 3 ways. All of them were in agreement and the documents were hidden by Abe whilst the remaining items were burnt. With his share of the loot, Billy travelled to Kingston upon Hull and bought a tavern in the city centre naming the hostelry “ye old Bonnie Boat” Abe and Gertrude ended the drug smuggling business and opened a factory in Hornsea making curd cheese in bulk. Gertrude would go on to write several books one of which “for the love of cheeses” would become a best seller in Wales. Abraham Lincoln or John Mulkinshaw as he became knownlocally , became a philanthropist, funding many charitable ventures, especially setting up a school for ship’s cabin boys in memory of “Chubby Harry”, his savory saviour. The opening of school was tainted by inference in the local press that John was under the influence of narcotics when he cut the ribbon at the ceremony. The newspaper headline was “HARRY OTTER AND THE PHILANTHROPIST STONED?”
Jimima Mulkinshaw, the alleged daughter of Abe, herself never married instead becoming a prostitute. This was not her own choice of employment but unfortunately she misspelled 'werehouse’ on her place of work form. On here retirement she moved back to cheese cottage and it was during the renovation this family secret came to light. She produced the final piece of the jigsaw; this photograph shown above. It shows an elderly Abraham greeting William outside cheese cottage on Abe’’s 100th Birthday, Abe was awarded a medal from Queen Victoria for services to the opium trade and he was ironically given the “Golden Teet Owl” medal, the highest award given to someone who was “a right good Yorkshireman!” Both men had lost their American drawls and had full Yorkshire twang. William was still the proud owner of his Public House had also been working part time as a hired hitman. Andrew Roake never attempted contact either men and legend says he used his vast, ill-gotten wealth to buy a remote island where he set up home with a french ex assassin Dwarf. This was this last meeting of the two old friends…
Postscript. Sadly, the expert who authenticated this collection events was arrested for making fake copies of dvds (mostly box sets of the BBC TV series 'Lovejoy’) and is serving 5 years in prison. I therefore submit this tale for your delectation and for you to decide it’s validation.
Headcanon that when Nana runs off to England, she goes out to punk rock clubs to dance. She'll meet cute, petite brunettes that she's attracted to, but always tells them that her name is Nancy and she never stays with them longer than that specific evening.
