Review: KINMOZA! and Hello!! KINMOZA

“ Shinobu Oomiya once left Japan to participate in a homestay in England. During her time there, she became close friends with Alice Cartelet, the daughter of the family she was living with. However, when it was time for Shinobu to return to Japan, the two were able to express their sorrow despite the language barrier between them. Five years later, now a first year student in high school, Shinobu receives a letter by air mail in a language she does not understand. This letter is penned by none other than Alice, detailing her own homestay in Japan. In fact, Alice will be attending Shinobu's high school and living with her! Alongside their friends Youko Inokuma, Aya Komichi, and Karen Kujou, the five girls attend school together and learn about what their different cultures have to offer, day after day. “

A very ok series. I didn’t have any particular feelings about it one way or another. i watched both season 1 and 2 in one go. I found myself struggling toward the end of season 1 going into season 2 to keep going... Not for any reason then I just wasn’t attached to any of the characters and I was getting bored. I initially started watching this series because I am going to London in September (2018) and it seemed like a fun little thing to do since my last world travel was to Japan. I was saddened to find this series is more about Japan then England though but let’s save that for... 

Criticism: 

I know there must be Japanese voice actors that speak better English then we were given in this series. We are supposed to believe these are native English speakers who have learned Japanese as a second language, but when they speak English it is atrocious and sounds like American English to boot!  

Karen 

lol just kidding, but only kind of, I found her really annoying. I like her dynamic with Kuzahashi-sensei but that is about it. 

The story is boring and we’ve seen a dozen Japanese high school anime, why not push the envelope and make this story more about England? 

The art is mundane and lifeless and the characters are overly loli 

Positives: 

La-la-lesbians and it does not seem as teasy as a lot of yuri plots are. They are pretty straight up that these girls are into each other, especially in the case of Aya toward Yoko 

Honestly my favorite character is Honoka and I am sad she is not in the series more. 

When Alice and Karen have that conversation in English about takoyaki vs taiyaki I was literally dying because that is one of the exact translation issues I had while I was in Japan, it was very relatable!

KINMOZA! Manga Concludes its Japanese Publication Run in 5 Chapters

  All good things must come to an end, and according to the official Twitter feed of Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara seinen manga magazine, Kiniro Mosaic, the manga that served as the basis for the KINMOZA! anime, is concluding its publishing run in five chapters.

  Written and illustrated by Yui Hara, Kiniro Mosaic has been serialized in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Max 4-panel comic magazine since 2010. The series has been adapted into two TV anime (2013's KINMOZA! and 2015's Hello!! KINMOZA) as well as a 2016 OAV with direction by Tensho and animation production by Studio Gokumi and Aksiz.

    An English language version of Kiniro Mosaic is also published by Yen Press, who describe the series as follows:

  Alice has just transferred to a school in Japan from England, and a whole world of adventures await with her new friends Shinobu, Aya, Karen, and Youko. Join the girls' daily school lives as they learn more about Japan's language and culture!
