Kin-iro Mosaic Blu-ray Review

Kin-iro Mosaic is the anime adaptation of Yui Hara’s slice-of-life comedic manga. It’s known as Kinmoza or translated as “Golden Mosaic.” Apart from the anime, which ran for two seasons, as Kin-iro Mosaic and Hello!! Review: KINMOZA! and Hello!! KINMOZA

“ Shinobu Oomiya once left Japan to participate in a homestay in England. During her time there, she became close friends with Alice Cartelet, the daughter of the family she was living with. However, when it was time for Shinobu to return to Japan, the two were able to express their sorrow despite the language barrier between them. Five years later, now a first year student in high school, Shinobu receives a letter by air mail in a language she does not understand. This letter is penned by none other than Alice, detailing her own homestay in Japan. In fact, Alice will be attending Shinobu's high school and living with her! Alongside their friends Youko Inokuma, Aya Komichi, and Karen Kujou, the five girls attend school together and learn about what their different cultures have to offer, day after day. “

A very ok series. I didn’t have any particular feelings about it one way or another. i watched both season 1 and 2 in one go. I found myself struggling toward the end of season 1 going into season 2 to keep going... Not for any reason then I just wasn’t attached to any of the characters and I was getting bored. I initially started watching this series because I am going to London in September (2018) and it seemed like a fun little thing to do since my last world travel was to Japan. I was saddened to find this series is more about Japan then England though but let’s save that for... 

Criticism: 

I know there must be Japanese voice actors that speak better English then we were given in this series. We are supposed to believe these are native English speakers who have learned Japanese as a second language, but when they speak English it is atrocious and sounds like American English to boot!  

Karen 

lol just kidding, but only kind of, I found her really annoying. I like her dynamic with Kuzahashi-sensei but that is about it. 

The story is boring and we’ve seen a dozen Japanese high school anime, why not push the envelope and make this story more about England? 

The art is mundane and lifeless and the characters are overly loli 

Positives: 

La-la-lesbians and it does not seem as teasy as a lot of yuri plots are. They are pretty straight up that these girls are into each other, especially in the case of Aya toward Yoko 

Honestly my favorite character is Honoka and I am sad she is not in the series more. 

When Alice and Karen have that conversation in English about takoyaki vs taiyaki I was literally dying because that is one of the exact translation issues I had while I was in Japan, it was very relatable!

Sentai Filmworks Anime Series Removed From Crunchyroll

On August 1, 77 anime titles licensed by Sentai Filmworks were removed from anime streaming platform Crunchyroll. The titles removed included several Yuri and “Yuri-ish” series, as follows:

Some of the titles are currently available to stream on HIDIVE. Of those previously mentioned, all are on the platform except for KINMOZA! (Season 1) and YUYUSHIKI.

In an article published on Crunchyroll News, Miles Thomas, Crunchyroll’s Director of Community Marketing, said:

Kiniro Mosaic: Thank You, online un nuovo trailer del film in uscita ad agosto

La commedia si sposterà a Nara e Kyoto per la gita scolastica di fine liceo.

Pubblicato un secondo trailer di “Kiniro Mosaic: Thank You!!”, il film d’animazione tratto dal manga comico slice of life ideato da Yui Hara, che sbarcherà nelle sale giapponesi il 20 agosto.

Il video anticipa la gita scolastica a Nara e Kyoto delle protagoniste, durante la primavera del loro ultimo anno di liceo. Inoltre, anche in questo nuovo trailer è possibile ascoltare un breve estratto del tema musicale del film, intitolato “Kin-iro Rhodanthe” e cantato dalle doppiatrici delle sei ragazze.    

Il lungometraggio è in lavorazione presso STUDIO GOKUMI (Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles, Seton Academy: Join the Pack!) e AXSIZ (Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood, Ulysses: Jeanne d'Arc and the Alchemist Knight) e sta venendo diretto da Munenori Nawa (Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn, Locodol). La sceneggiatura sta venendo curata da Yuniko Ayana (Locodol, Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko), mentre al character design è tornato Kazuyuki Ueda (Hinako Note, Kiniro Mosaic), unico membro principale dell’originale staff dietro alla serie televisiva.

Shinobu Omiya è una studentessa di 15 anni. Potrà sembrare la classica ragazza giapponese, ma quand'era alle elementari è stata presso una famiglia in Inghilterra. Le manca il periodo all'estero e un giorno le arriva una lettera.

Il manga è stato serializzato sulla rivista Manga Time Kirara MAX a partire dal 2010 e si è concluso di recente con la pubblicazione dell’11° volumetto.

L’opera ha già ispirato una serie animata di due stagioni, ognuna composta da 12 puntate, andate in onda nel 2013 e nel 2015 ed entrambe disponibili in Italia in streaming su Crunchyroll, intitolate “KINMOZA!” e “Hello!! KINMOZA”. Nel 2016 è invece uscito un episodio speciale di circa 50 minuti, rimasto però inedito.

Let’s take a look at HIDIVE!

HIDIVE is a new anime streaming service, providing legal content for the US.  I don’t know if they serve other territories; given that their catalog is mostly/entirely from Section23, there’s a chance that they only serve North America.

Like Crunchyroll, much of the content can be viewed free in SD with ads.  Ad-free/HD/dub/new content/uncensored streams are only available for premium subscribers.

You can browse all anime series alphabetically under the TV tab.  The Movies tab contains both movies and OVAs, but they are all restricted to premium members.

The ????: Sometimes no Uncensored Version

The site says that Premium membership is required for the uncensored versions.  In some cases, only uncensored versions are available, meaning that there are no free options for the show.  Also, presence of, or lack or, a censored version doesn’t necessarily mean the show is overall mature or not.

Example 1: Young Black Jack

Two versions are available:

The TV Broadcast version is free to watch, while the Home Video version is Premium.  Since Broadcast versions are liable to be censored, these options make sense for a TV-MA show.

Example 2: The World is Still Beautiful

I saw this show on Crunchyroll when it aired, so I’ve seen the broadcast version.  It’s a shoujo romance, and I don’t remember it being particularly naughty or graphic, but I guess it was since I get this:

This is rated TV-14, and the only version they have.  There is no uncensored option.  So I will have to stick to Crunchyroll to watch this show for free.

Example 3: When They Cry

I haven’t seen this series, but I know it always makes those top-10 lists of most disturbing/violent anime of all time.  However, fear not, you can view the Home Video version for free!  There isn’t even an age gate for you to say you’re a grownup (like Yahoo View has) so you kids can watch too!

It only has the Home Video versions (which should be the uncensored versions) so either this is the same as the TV edit, or it’s an older series so they don’t really care whether you pay to watch or not.

The ????: Sometimes no Subbed Version

In a similar vein, there are a few shows that are dub-only.  So again, there are no free streaming options for them, since dubs are restricted to premium members.

Anyway, that’s what there is for the free streams!  The premium content has some interesting perks (such as captioned versions available for the dubs, and more customization for subtitles) but we’re all about the free stuff here, so you can explore that on your own!

Kin-iro Mosaic New Anime Film Reveals Its Title "Thank you!!" & Teaser Visual

    In the special live-streaming program hosted by the five main voice cast members today, the official title for the forthcoming all-new anime feature film based on Yui Hara's slice-of-life comedy four-panel manga series Kin-iro Mosaic / KINMOZA! was announced as Kin-iro Mosaic Thank you!!, along with a teaser visual featuring Alice Cartelet.

  Kin-iro Mosaic Thank you!! is directed by Munenori Nawa (Nakaimo – My Sister Is Among Them!, Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn) on a screenplay by Yuniko Ayana, the series composition writer for the two TV anime series. Kazuyuki Ueta, who has worked on all of the anime series, serves as the character designer, Studio Gokumi and its former second studio AXsiZ work on anime production. Its release date has not yet been finalized.

        The manga was was adapted into the TV anime series by Studio Gokumi for two seasons: Kin-iro Mosaic (12 episodes/July-September 2013) and Hello!! Kin-iro Mosaic (12 episodes/April-June 2015). The two seasons are available on Crunchyroll under the title KINMOZA! and Hello!! KINMOZA.
