oh hey i saw that new zilla. its a fucking vfx tour de force, godzilla is fucking evil and nasty and despite being the smallest godzilla in quite a while feels FUCKING ENORMOUS. i watched it w the gfs in four dee ecks so the fucking chair whipped around and blew air past my ear which was ridiculous and for a few limited moments really did enhance the experience. mostly it was just stupid fun though. anyways. spoiler cut.

the rah rah we got beat in a war so this time well Win in a war done by Private Citizens and not the evil Government really rubbed me the wrong way. that characters are ok, acting is fun, story is melodramatic but hey its fucking godzilla. but more than any of that the Well Boy What If You Kamikazed Better And Didnt Die shit just really bummed me out. i guess its not really out of line with any other big budget blockbuster out there, but man. what a shame.

i really Really like the vfx work in this movie, its viscerally thrilling in a way im not sure ive ever seen godzilla. but that story is genuinely so distasteful to me i think i have to give it a 3/5. i can't recommend going to see this movie enough. godzilla fuckin rules in it. the actings good too! the period-ness of it plays well! its a fun ass movie! three outta five!

Godzilla 2016 - ShinGoji (シンゴジ)

MinusGoji really feels like the platonic ideal of a modern Godzilla, which makes sense considering its base design apparently comes from Godzilla: The Ride and not an auteur project like SHIN GODZILLA. I've heard that for Japanese audiences, the Heisei design from GODZILLA VS BIOLLANTE is the default look in their minds, and so it makes sense that's the primary inspiration here. But I love the integration the wilder elements of later designs into a more standard whole, with the radiation scarring of the 54 original that ShinGoji maxed out, gigantic dorsal spines that evoke Godzilla 2000 (who also feels like an influence on MinusGoji's emphasis on a big scary mouth), and the more directly scientific aquatic features brought it by Legendary's take (specifically the visible gills).

As pointed out by others, while it may be coincidence, there's even a slight resemblance in the face to Stan Winston's design from the never-realized Jan de Bont/Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio film that eventually mutated into Godzilla 98.

Needless to say, I loved Godzilla Minus One, but…

It has the most pathos of any Godzilla movie I’ve yet seen, an utterly terrifying depiction of the G-man, and superbly written human characters. Godzilla as a symbol of PTSD and the way trauma never really leaves a person (as shown in the final scene) is profound — it’s a delight to see people traumatized by war achieve a redemptive victory and defeat their metaphorical trauma, at least for now, and the message to live for a better future is something just as valuable now as it is for the time period of the film.

However, I can’t forgive this film for the crime of not being Shin Godzilla, my favorite movie ever. This is ultimately subjective, but I find I greatly prefer Shin’s animal lashing out in pain to the angry, vengeful monster of Minus One. MinusGoji is a classic Godzilla (plus regeneration and detonating atomic breath), and that suits the film, but I prefer the risks taken to make ShinGoji weird and distinct. Shin Godzilla is the story of the world’s most difficult euthanasia, not the genuine, personal conflict of Minus One, and while the deeply personal story of Minus One is beautiful and engaging, but it doesn’t hit as close to home for me as Shin’s exploration of how politicians would genuinely react to an unprecedented disaster — Shin is deeply concerned with political power, while Minus One focuses on the actions of postwar civilians and individuals. Minus One is the Godzilla movie we’ve all been waiting for, a proper tribute to the original, but it just can’t beat the deconstruction of Shin for me. Much as I enjoyed it, I left the theater wishing I had rewatched Shin.

Minus One gets a 9/10 from me. It’s my third favorite Godzilla film after the political drama of Shin and the Kaiju-on-kaiju action of KOTM. Of all Godzilla films, Minus One has the best vocalizations for Godzilla, so definitely see it before it leaves IMAX.

Are you excited for Shin Kamen Rider? (Not Kamen Rider Shin, boy I had to explain that to a lot of people) I had coincidentally watched all 98 episodes of OG Rider long before the movie was announced. Please never watch all 98 episodes of Kamen Rider btw it will drain your soul.

I am insanely excited for it, especially after the most recent trailer released! Shin Ultra and ShinGoji were fantastic and it looks like this will blow them both out of the water.

Also don't worry I don't plan on watching the entirely of the original show anytime soon, it's definitely not the most pleasant experience shotgunning it.

that godzilla web weave was originally gonna be longer btw. i wouldve included stuff from ghidorah the three headed monster, vs destoroyah, shingoji and final wars but i didnt have the time to watch those movies again and the post was getting too long
