I think this is even longer and more rambly than yours 😭😭 i'm so sorry YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS

but you did! so, first off, Athi is uhhh passionate and can be quite stubborn, she is very much an act-first-make-excuses-later kinda gal, and she loves with her whole heart. she also ultimately agrees that the Veil has to go, and is pragmatic about what that means for Thedas' current inhabitants. I mean she isn't quite to the same "whatever the cost" point as Solas, and I think she's actually more realistic about what that cost might be than he is, but she is satisfied with a pretty high level of risk. in fact, I like to think this causes a lot of friction with Varric, and then Rook as well. she's maybe gotten a little too comfortable with making world-altering decisions.

anywayyy during and immediately after Trespasser, she is in pain and exhausted and that plus two years of pining after her ex (humiliating) and having to literally hunt him down have made her kinda bitter and resentful [tiny fic]. I mean, a bit pleased, also, to find out he has been pining right back! But mostly pissed off that he left her—again—and is being so stupid and stubborn about doing this alone, and about losing half her ARM, and also she's very very very sick of playing scapegoat for the humans. so she disbands the Inquisition and goes on the hunt again herself. this entire time period is rough for her; she does a lot of traveling, much of it solo, trying to locate Solas and use her connections to find a better way to offer him (magical science is NOT where her own talents lie). she sees her friends when she can, and finds joy with them and in the natural wonders of the world like she always has, but is largely consumed by this task, and it wears on her. I do think she tries to move on romantically a time or two (probably at Dorian's insistence tbh), but it never gets far. by VG she's pretty much resigned herself to living in this weird awful limbo where she loves him and maybe he loves her and that doesn't matter even a little.

the ending i wrote for them [tiny fic, same series as the other one] is for sure a tragedy, which.. I've always viewed them as a tragedy, and Athi's kind of a pathetic, tragic character, but I was really hoping Bioware would write me a happier ending. and they did! I'm mostly satisfied with it, even though a lot of the getting there doesn't make sense to me. the choice to go with him was in-character for her.

so in the VG canon, she steps in to help out the south because i guess no one else has their shit together (and she does?? somehow), and comes back for the big fight. In That Moment, she has never been more sure about anything in her life. kind of like Rome, it's a sense of relief. she's devoted ten years of her life to finding him and figuring this out, and cannot imagine spending the rest of it just. living normally without him. in true Athi form, she does not think this decision through, but would come to the same conclusion either way. whatever happens, they'll figure it out. or maybe they won't! but in her mind, together is far, far better than not.

spoilers for the fic-to-be, but since i'm not a longfic writer and it might suck in which case i'll keep it to myself, i'm not worried: in MY canon for her, she splits her efforts between supporting Rook as a sort of agent and attending to things in the south, which is for sure suffering but not utterly devastated. athi's actually the one to "recruit" Mythal (which goes predictably well /s) and learns a TON about the blight and the titans and tranquility that she adds to what she's learned from the vir'abelasan and some other people, and realizes that now that the gods are out, there's an opportunity to genuinely Do It Right if they can kill them. so she goes into the final confrontation with much more of a plan in mind, and is way more involved in talking Solas down. and him entering the Fade is not him relinquishing his goals, like it is in-game, but more of a redirection. like, yeah this way will be much harder and take longer, and Solas is going to have to do a lot of healing before they can even start that work, but it will be a true solution and not just an undoing, like he wants, or an atonement, like Rook wants. and then in the Fade they basically have to learn how to love each other all over again, because it's been a decade and they have BAGGAGE. but i love that for them!

ultimately their happy ending is that they heal the blight and the titans and bring down the veil (maybe they convince people in the waking world, maybe not, haven't decided) and the world changes and its cataclysmic (not like everyone dies but. a lot of things change! society gets fucked up) but also whole. still ruminating on the flavor of ending i want for them, but rest assured it is way happier than nomt.

Since we are still blogging, sure! I'll give it a go on why this series is fantastic

TL;DR: Monster Men and Monster Fucking, Clever and Zany world building and science doing, heartfelt natural romance, multiple complex antagonists, and it's Just Really Funny

First, Jaegars exist. They are all cheerful and happy-go-lucky monster men that murder with a smile and passion. They are also silly, loyal, and really funny to read as the comedic minions vs their stoic bosses. They are wild, rambunctious, and will die in the line of fire because it is their duty and they love violence.

I am listing out Jaegers first because they were the Only reason I continued reading this comic and I have no regrets

Second, fantastic world building and science shennanigans. We live in a world where mad scientist geniusus are the norm. And anyone that has mad genius level intelligence are called Sparks. And they all have the weirdest and narrow niches to just explode their sciences on. So you have Idiot Savants all around with wacky Dr. Seuss Machines just trying to defend, kill, or do random shit as they see fit. Like I am reading currently Mad Scientist Woman obsessed with Rats. Her pets and children. She made them giant and poison resistant. She taught them to do a play. She loves them like children. Another crazy spark guy is just obsessed with pies and making pie throwing machines and mood changing pie recipes. No containing the madness!

Third, an Actual Legitimate Romance. I started reading this comic before I got into my dumb-but-no-really romance book genres. So I was really apprehensive about reading romance in comics, especially with the love triangle angles of it or multiple leads. So I just wasn't sure. But here, we see our lead Agatha slowly turn from an unsure clumsy assistant into a science wielding powerhouse that doesn't put up with shit. And during that, because of that, we see the slow burn build up of why and how she fell in love with Gil and Tarvek, and how they became friends/lovers/rivals. How they all care for each other even while trying to be science and the art just shows it well

Fourth, multi-layered antagonists. You think we have a Big Bad? Yeah we do, but we actually have two. Barron Klaus Von Wolfenbach who is ruling with an iron first trying to maintain the peace and is effectively an antagonist who is against our main character Agatha because her legacy and heritage threatens the stability he established. He is not a villain, but 100% an antagonist who is willing to do ANYTHING to keep the world safe.

Not forgetting our gals here, Lucrezia Moonfish. She is the defacto Big Bad. World Domination. Trying to take over earth and dimensions and possible space wherever the hell she's currently at. She is ruthless, evil, sciencey, does what she wants when she wants. She is trying to sacrifice her daughter to herself to bring herself power that's how terrible she is. We love to see a woman villain taking charge because she can.

Also did I say that her and Klaus fucked? Because they totally fucked.

Finally, this comic is just really funny. Like, just Truly Really Funny. Lots one one line jokes. Lots of running gags. Lots of physical comedic, dark humor, sight gags, deadpan humor, background jokes. Anything and everything is fair game. And it's legitimately funny. When you laugh you actually laugh. It really is a breath of fresh air to see my favorites just be funny in any scenario.

God there's so much more I want to go off on, because trust me, I was there, I had to get a nudge to put my foot in the door on this comic. But it is worth it trust me.

Oh please allow me to elaborate, since I’ve quite researched this matter a bit I might have some insight to share.

Our chaos manipulating powers mostly come from being attuned to the Master Emerald but it’s not quite as simple as that. Due to the nature of chaotic energy it can be a rather unstable energy to deal with, some individuals are more sensitive to these energies than others, and there’s really no telling how it could affect each individual on a biological sense or even ability wise. This is why even though we all have chaos abilities we are able to manipulate it in different ways and even have our on ways of channeling that energy. 

Grandfather Spectre for example, in his young adulthood he experienced an incident in which his body absorbed really high levels of chaos energy directly from the Master Emerald. 

As a result of this near death experience he noticed that his skin had darkened and had began producing clouds of his essence as well as becoming a lot more sensitive to chaos energy. This leads him to have near omniscience and a greater command of chaos force which allows him to do incredible things such as teleportation with the use of the chaos force. I’ll also add that our family lineage are a bit of an anomaly when it comes to us drawing energy from the Master Emerald in comparison to the rest of the populace. Since our family has years of research and exposure to these energies it’s a factor that is ingrained in our DNA, allowing us to have a greater discipline and sensitivity in channeling these energies more naturally than most.

 An unfortunate outcome of dealing with Chaos energies is that they can be quite unstable as chaos in an of itself is unpredictable, so while our lineage has done its part in making it a science there’s still variables that may be unknown to us or beyond our scope of comprehension.

Citrusella: • A witty, confident, hyperactive, and most importantly rebellious but means well. She has the energy to stand up and fight back if it means her friends are ok. (She is the type to bite someone’s face, she’s that chaotic.)

•Loves 2000’s scene, punk, and emo music and fashion. Her inspo is Avril Lavigne. She does her best to recreate her style to the best of her abilities.

•She hates on Swizz cuz he told her emo music is not a genre. She somehow never let that go? Another would be how him and jubi take up space in the couch. (She wants to watch domo shorts in the living room.)

•Her and the recolors have a band, their called ‘Sugary breakout’ She’s the lead vocalist, and electric guitar player.

•She uses a lot of hairspray on the daily! Sometimes she even uses her sisters when she runs out of hers. She sometimes spends her sisters money on clip-on extensions.

•She dislikes how jubileena embarrasses her like showing her friends photos of her “fashionable experimental” phase. She gets back at her by playing her guitar loudly in the garage.��

• She’s prone to be too touchy with her best friends, at times she needs someone to tell her to stop cuz she misses the signs.

Torvald: • The chillest gal around town. Who doesn’t need to say much to get her point across.

•She’s seen as the big sister to Sticky and Sakura for her chill attitude but Minty sees her as her little sister cuz she’s the original.

•R&B enjoyer with the style of Aaliyah. Mainly sticks to the 90’s, sometimes wear 90’s street wear if she has the time.

•She is considered the most honest racer, if someone were to tell her that they have a problem, she would give her full honest opinion even if it’s hurts.

•She’s a listener at best.

•Her catchphrase is, “Just be Mellow, my yellow’s.”

• Torvald enjoys doing comedy and does it as her side job whenever she’s not racing.

Nougetsia: • She’s quite a meek and timid racer, who can invent unique gadgets for the karts that can make the game even more fun and interesting for the gamers out there.

• Number 1# Bunny lover.

• Make-up expert when it comes to basic designs to the more complex. She has ALL of the foundations if you need it.

• Nouget love croquette especially if its pink, she’s a Beabadoobe gal. She loves alt rock and pop.

• She adores nature like her sister but knows it’s not always sunshine’s and rainbows. Sometimes she gets concern for her Adora’s sanity but it’s all jokes in the end.

• She is willing to do risky things just for fun. Like Hot wiring king candy’s kart and go crazy by staying up and going to parties with her friends.

• Nougetsia is a science enjoyer and at times can be a HUGE GEEK for specific topics.

Sticky: • The kindest racer you’ll ever meet. However can outsmart you in a race if you are fooled.

• She is the nerd of the mint sisters. And some would say the straight man of the sisters.

• Her favorite genre of music is lofi and indie. She enjoys wearing tumblr fashion, mainly the nerdy one. She’s inspired by Hemlock Springs along with being a nerd about books and movies.

•She loves watching movies in the meantime and is one of those friends who would give you trivia and facts about the movie when you’re watching it with her. (Just don’t ask any further questions.)

• Sticky loves reading books. Most of times she would go on the internet and buy books. (or steal, she gets it from Citrus) She loves studying about butterflies because she loves the patterns they have, her bow even resembling a butterfly. To show her love of them.

• Sticks loves creating poetry that would express her feelings about what she’s going through, or about others.

• She’s an all around a kind, somewhat sarcastic, intelligent, and patient racer. Who would break a few rules here and there if she can get away with it.

Sakura: • The starry-eyed friendly girlie who’s a bit tomboyish. She’s always finding new ways to be amazed by the world around her.

• She’s the optimistic sister of the Mint sisters. She can also be known as the one with swords.

• Has a fondness of early 2000’s mainly the poppy and cool stuff behind it. She loves wearing Mori Kei fashion, while listening to Hikaru Utada. Though she only wears it when she feels comfortable when being alone.

• Sakura loves making weapons, upgrading her own swords, or just practice in the woods. She even does parkour to cut down any candy cane branches to make firewood.

• She makes her own bow in order to let video game characters and some gamers not confuse her with Candlehead. Since they have similar features, but are very different in tone and style. Even when others don’t see it; she would just ignore them and mumble something in Japanese so they wouldn’t understand.

• In her time off she would sing by herself. She’s would do this when she’s alone and sometimes be comfortable enough to sing around someone she likes.

• She LOVES the outdoors so much that HATES being inside. Not to the point that she’s a stray cat but more like someone wants to do something outside and can’t waste time being inside. She would even stay outside in the rain just to have fun.

Aaaages ago (2018), I had a Hazbin Sinner OC who was heavily, heavily based off of "Out Alive", "Prom Night" and "Just One Yesterday" ; Diana the Hyena. A Prom Queen who wholesale slaughtered the competition. I've tweaked her some since her last postage.

Diana called for a toast in the girl's locker room, and when asked why they were meeting there of all places, she quietly 'confessed' to them that she had snuck in a bottle of alcohol and didn't want them to be busted celebrating in the hallway, or an empty classroom. Naturally, that was intriguing! Off the gaggle of gals went to gather, and Diana pulled out an obscure brand bottle that smelled like lime and looked like lemonade. It was intriguing! The girls all collected a shot, and Diana, who already had her own cup poured, asked the most charismatic of them all to lead the toast for 'good luck'.

Downing her cup first, Diana watched closely to make sure the others would follow in suit, and once they all took a swig, she gasped and said she heard a noise outside. The girls, already feeling the effects of something strange in their stomachs, buckled with anxiety. She told them not to move, that she would investigate, and she slipped out as girls began rushing to the toilets and sinks to unload their stomachs. She locked the door, put a folded step ladder beneath the knob, and snuck away, slipping the bottle of her own special concocted poison into her backpack that she'd stuff away in the pool room.

Diana was the shining star of her Science Class who just so happened to have a love for True Crime. Not a good combination.

Seeing as the other candidates did not show up, there was really only one present gal in attendance to vote for. Not everyone's first choice, but honestly, she was for a chunk of them. She was such a sweet gal who took her time out to help others with their science questions when they were struggling, and she was quite amicable. She would've stood a fair shot because of that! But her self-consciousness about her appearance in comparison to the others, and practically possessing eagerness to try out her homemade poison, really won out in the end ( and animals are not to be experimented on - humans are a more humane test subject in her opinion(?????????) ).

These are not good reasons at all to do what she did, and yet they were hers. Sometimes it really can be that simple. Wanting the win, wanting to see how well her experiment worked, and following an insatiable morbid curiosity for a mind that consumed too much content about murder at such a young age.

It was a lovely time for Diana. Dancing, celebrating, partying away the hours with her new crown and sash, and science friends who were more than happy to celebrate her victory. It was a damn good night! The fact there were now lots of girls laying dead in a locker room is just an afterthought, really.

The night ended, and as everyone was leaving, Diana was taken captive by a trio of boys before she could make it to the parking lot where her mother was waiting to pick her up. Dragged with her backpack all the way to the tree grove behind the school, she was confronted by them -- and one of the surviving candidates, who was rasping and clearly too sick to engage in much conversation, but her boyfriend was more than happy to make up for the loss.

Overpowered, Diana was beaten and bruised, but the finishing blow was the candidate discovering the bottle in her backpack and deciding to literally give Diana a taste of her own medicine. The boys held her down, and the candidate force fed her the entirety of the bottle. It didn't take long for her to pass.

Since then on, Diana's been on missing posters that have been long forgotten by now, an overseen case, a missing girl with a potentially promising future never to be found. No one knows by whose hand the victims perished, because the killer was already taken care of with no evidence left on the crime scene - her killers certainly didn't want to be caught, and unfortunately seen the girls unsolved deaths as a necessary evil for their reputation and future.

Now as a Sinner, Diana has been getting by as an employee of Carmilla's, a scientist specializing in experimentation and liquefying holy weaponry into usable form. She's really trying to put them in pill form, but hasn't found quite the durable capsule yet. Given how she died from being force fed her own poison, she's a little obsessive over this project.

When I first posted about her on an old blog, one of my old friends, Peggy, pleasantly surprised me by linking the song "The Ballad of Sara Berry" LMAO. LOVE SOME KILLER PROM QUEENS.

There was an awkward silence as the aspiring witches stood there and gawked at me expectantly. I stared back at them with mild astonishment. I didn't feel so bad now about all of my failed previous attempts! Rebecca and Burnside couldn't do any better! This proved that lowfolk really were useless (except for Barkingthwaite and Venatrix … I was either really lucky or really good to get them) I would really have my work cut out for me with this group. Perhaps after I established contact with Edessa's lowfolk magick school, I could offload these girls onto them, thereby freeing up Rebecca and Burnside to help me tend to more important (i.e. elfly) matters.

"Pleased to meet you, Your Lordship," the bear in the school uniform finally said, after the silence had become uncomfortable. "Harriet Gardener, at your service. I must say, I am delighted to have the great Lord Randal here at our coven. I have some bold new ideas to bring the study of magick into the modern age. The witches resumed the activities they were engaged in when I arrived, and Burnside led me over to the edge of the clearing.

okay, you didn't ask for my stupid rambles (and i swear one day i'll stop — *insert the 'today is not that day' meme*) so here are some facts:

RUE PARKER

‘the wayhaven chronicles’ canon

personality stats: sarcastic, easygoing & charming (also: not really a stickler for the rules and authority in general);

professional skills: deduction, science & combat — no matter what she's doing or how many times she's done it, the results will always be perfect and spot on;

rebecca → relationship status: not overly bad. honestly? could be better, but it could be much, much worse (personal note #1: rebecca is not my favourite character in the series and i'd probably be happier if she had died already — fingers crossed for book 5, sorry-not-sorry, becky — or, at least, if the narrative/characters would stop forcing the readers/mc to forgive her);

tina & verda → relationship status: best pals. her ride-or-die squad;

felix → relationship status: best friend. she found a mischievous kindred soul to relate with and if you ever encounter them together... run (there's this scene at the beginning of book 3, where adam/ava asks why the werewolves attacked them and rue answered with: "i may have made one teeny sarcastic comment", causing adam's/ava's soul to leave their body, lol);

bobby → relationship status: ex-boyfriend (personal note #2: i've always hated that the mc's gender/sexuality is what determines the ros' and bobby's gender) — she's not bothered by him at all, but since her responses are very sarcastic, well... rest in peace, robert marks;

mason → relationship status: a big, bright question mark;

personal canon

if i have to choose a few words to describe her, i'd say: naturally talented, wild card & big dick energy;

hyperactive little kid — couldn't stay still at all. always exploring the world around her, climbing up some tree/furniture or hiding somewhere in the house/backyard to play (the sitters tasked with keeping an eye on her went batshit crazy all. the. time);

as i said here, rue is extremely smart, often prone to boredom if something is not mentally challenging/stimulating enough (which can also be applied to her romantic relationships);

if you ever need someone to cut out some tension (or spike it up even more), she is the right gal for you. unfortunately, 99% of the time, the saying 'taking things seriously' is not part of her vocabulary (e.g. in book 3, when finding out about the trappers' bounty, she says: "how much am i worth?"). what can i say, she really likes to have a good time;

sarcasm is her default mode, plus she always downplays her feelings/emotions by either ignoring them or making badly-timed jokes;

rarely bothered by anything (e.g. in book 3, during the 'fight' with mason/morgan at the bakery, rue replies with: "me being naked is way more important to you") plus, not a jealous person ever (alima included, when she'll make her appearance);

was in an on-again/off-again relationship with bobby. after a while, though, she got exceedingly bored by the monogamous lifestyle and decided to dump his ass;

never had serious relationships/fell in love before — this is partly because: a) she's a free-spirited person & b) she's scared shitless of commitment (mostly caused by rook's death and seeing what that did to rebecca). in a sense, she and mason are quite similar;

just thinking about the word 'love' has her panicking really bad (i.e. after the 'date' at the antique shop), so when mason will inevitably confess his feelings to her... the only way i can see this going is with rue assuming it's all some kind of prank but, once her huge brain will catch on the fact that mason is not exactly the joking type, she will get cold feet and blearily say: "uhh, thank you, i guess?". after realizing what she has said/done, she will skedaddle so fast that the only thing people are going to see is an indistinctive, blurry form (later, she will definitely wish for an asteroid to hit her);

likes to sing everywhere: in the shower, at her workplace, inside the car, you name it (and she's also very good at hitting those high notes too — while she was attending the police academy, 'the karaoke incident' happened and no one beside her and tina knows the truth about it. verda is still trying to unsuccessfully bribe them to know what took place);

excellent chef — loves to cook/bake when she has some free time (she just thinks the entire process is pretty neat, starting with a few ingredients to achieve a full-on meal);

Simon and Betty don't get into that absolute batshit, tho I'm sure they'd still have some shenanigans in their years lolz. But ye, it works p well for them, they deserve chill vibe time-

Base amory is always obsessed with magic, so it was perfect to translate to this. He would love Simon's books and study antiquarian stuff on the side of his chemistry science nerd degree. And when Betty and Simon can't find the crown, amory with his stubborn ass would find it a perfect way of proving his metal to retrieve it where a famous person couldn't lolz. He always feels like he has something to prove, which manifests in his reckless determination and stubbornness. His goal was to prove the existence of magic and theorized the artifacts were tools and a map to determining the code to spells with your own hands. His dad always thought it was absolutely stupid, that he was wasting his potential on silly fantasies, daddy-o wasn't a fan of Simon either when amory would talk about a lecture of his. Amory's dad is kinda like, take Marcy's dad, and remove the goofy cray cray, he's kinda jus a gruff and generally aggressive ass. Abusive in many flavors and imprinted a lot of the trauma response behaviors in amory.

(I'm tryna summarize best I can but omyglob-)

The gal on the bottom right was amory's fiance, who didn't know much bout this stuff but tried to support him, yet something didn't sit right with her about seeking objects like those that are buried away. Amory was wrapped up in his head and didn't listen, which leads to kirona leaving, as she couldn't deal with his progressively worse obsessive behavior, especially after he found the crown and put it on. He did not keep it together with the crowns effects, and nearly hurt kirona before she managed to land hitting the crown off his head. He was so engulfed in what he saw that he didn't even hear her when in her high adrenaline state was scolding him. When kirona tried to take the crown to get it away, he reached out to take it back which made her more angry. High emotion time and all that she rushed out from the apartment.

Amory tried to show the crown off as proof of his theories, that he just needed to study it more. They didn't believe what he told them of it, so in his frustration he put it on to show them, trying to keep it together this time, but it went a bit crazy with him freezing some peeps and getting in ppls face hah.

His deal is that he totally is like, "itsfineitafineitsfine-" thinking he totally has it all under control, that he can figure it out.

Over the years, he thinks he's found a way to stifle the madness to get a clearer head. In his chaotic potion making, made a sort of toh eda elixir. It helps but doesn't fix fix it, and he'll start growing a tolerance so he keeps changing it and trying to figure out other ways. So he's kinda in between ice king and winter king in sanity lol

Instead of capturing princesses like ice king, glacier king (amory) tricks wizards into signing a contract to basically give their body to science, door to door business bich in the wizard City lmao, jus like I got ✨free healthcare✨ XD also collects various creatures of ooo to study mutations and differences between how the natural creatures are and hexed creatures. Glacier would also be fascinated by bubblegum for her own mad scientist side lol. He would a hundred percent steal her candy people making instructions or randomly bug her for tips or share his own.

Finn and Jake would be a nuisance cuz y'know they'd sabotage his hostage lab rats biz, but after getting over that he'd find it kind of amusing and a cut between the cycle he's been in. So later in the show would study them lol not entirely sure how all the parts would work- but that's most of what I got so far

Nah, bc I have tingz to say about Halloweentown!

I'll start off saying that I wouldn't really want a re-write or a reboot or something like that, but the way it could have been spread out was a missed opportunity I'll always lament on. What do you mean Gal? I'm glad you asked ghost in my corner! I mean to say that HT really could have been the Cromwell series and not just about my gurl Marnie. But instead ALL of the Cromwell children and their relations with magic and the magic worlds.

(Is she about to go into a tangent? Yes, yes she it)

Let's talk about little Sophie. Movie one demonstrates just how much more powerful she was to Marnie with her being much younger and already using magic without her knowledge. Now the argument could be that its just how all the children were since at that age of course they wouldn't know how to control their magic. However, never once was it mentioned either offhandedly or directly that Marnie or Dylan also experienced such a thing. Perhaps they did, but for argument sake, I'm only using the facts shown in the movies and the fact is, Sophie wanted that cookie and gonna get that cookie 🍪. All that being said, I wish we got more of Sophie and that struggle of obviously being the Family's prodigy but being overlooked by Aggie's favoritism towards Marnie (*I'll be going over this much much later in a different post 👀).

Perhaps we could have seen the fear that she'll never be as good as Marnie despite being stronger and since she's not getting that same level of training, Sophie might fear that her abilities will diminish instead of flourish into the Witch we all know she could be. I think the third movie should have been more about Sophie and that internal struggle of knowing deep down she's naturally stronger, but could never measure up to Aggie's high expectations. I'm not saying I'd like to see Sophie suffer or turn "Evil" but I'd love to see the turmoil that would arise from that internal struggle and how she views her relationships with her grandma and Marnie. Maybe she sees Aggie the way that her mother sees Aggie, maybe Sophie gets Gwen a little deeper. Maybe she understands Dylan in a way that makes Sophie a bridge between him and Marnie.

Speaking of Dylan. My poor boy, Dylan. OK, where to start. Oh, I know! (Bit of a rant incoming) How about the blatant disrespect for his boundaries and preferences? How many times has he stated he doesn't want to identify as a Warlock or that he doesn't feel comfortable with Magic to begin with? Since movie one this man has stated that he didn't like magic and that's more of a science guy. Cool, that's cool right? Nope, not for Marnie and Aggie apparently.

Yes, we all know that Dylans isn't the strongest warlock and that's because he has successfully locked it away within himself, that's his prerogative, he's happier with the "Normies" he's comfortable. Yet time and time again he's pushed into uncomfortable situations for the sake of Marnie's comfort (end of rant). Dylan is a muti-layered character that's actually very complex, however the story seems to continue this one note narrative of him being the "buzzkill" the "party-pooper" the one always complaining about having an amazing gift. But what may be a gift to you can be a curse to someone else. To Marnie, discovering that she's (genetically and historically) special was one of the greatest days of her life while simultaneously, it was crushing to Dylan. That gap of weirdness to normalcy has just widened and now its not as simple as being an outcast (for early 2000s standards lol) but it's inherently linked within. To Dylan, he knows he could never really be normal. Like Sophie, we really needed to see that turmoil played out without it being a joke because after the first and second movies, it's not funny anymore. He's not Marnie, he doesn't see Magic as a deep fundamental part of his being.

Can you imagine the feeling of being told your family name is important enough that it links to the founding of an entire world and that very world expects so much from you, but you don't have the drive to deliver? And why should you, it's just a name, right? You didn't choose to Heir from greatness, why is there so much pressure to do what you don't want to? That's what I think rings through Dylan. Because even in a place of Monsters and ghouls and magic, he's still the outcast. A Cromwell who doesn't have the ambition to become as great as their line before them? It's unheard of, it's strange. So, something must be wrong with them right? I think the fourth movie (we will FOREVER ignore HT4, what HT4?!) Should haven been about Dylan and his full acceptance as he is without the influence of his family. I think it should have been him going to a college of his own choosing (bc why would you make one child attend the same college as the other child just to keep an eye on them – uh, huh!?) we watch him find his footing and meets another witch/warlock who also finds mortal normalcy comforting. I think if he finds people like him who validates his feelings Dylan would be able to come to terms with so many internal struggles that be has such as he quiet resentment towards Marnie and Aggie. I think at even at a young age, Dylan truly understood Gwen and that's why he was always on her side with everything (also bc he's a mama's boy. Let's be real ✨️).

Often times I just that there were several missed opportunities for flesh out these characters and their importance in the world of Halloweentown and how they each interacted with their magical roots and culture.

I want to talk about Gwen as well, but I think that deserves its own post so I'll be doing another long one on her (and Aggie). But I will say you do look at things from her perspective as an adult in comparison as a child. I actually feel sort of sad for her, but I'll get into it soon. I have so many things to say about Halloween town and alot of the old 2000s disney spooky movies we grew up with and how they connect. I did an entire video on TT on how I believe HT and nightmare before Christmas is connected which I'll be placing here but in a more written cohesive format.

The charm of the Jazz Age is in full swing in this book, with its delightfully silly slang and seedy, corrupted dealings that lurk under the glitz of 1920s Chicago. I know some readers may find a lot of the 20s speak overbearing and confusing, but I think it endears me a little bit more to it. Naturally, Ruby, a self-proclaimed flapper, uses it more in her POV chapters than Guy, so it adds a little bit more characterization to her, as well as gives the dual narrations their own tones and styles.

Ruby is a spitfire of a gal, a real hotsy totsy that uses her mind reading abilities to murder abusive men that have no empathy towards the women they murder or take advantage of. If you're in the mood for a "we support women's wrongs" sort of book, this one will definitely take the cake. The book doesn't really go into any sort of moral ambiguity towards Ruby's actions. She believes what she's doing is necessary, knowing that innocent people would get murdered if she did nothing. Murder is a last resort, saved for those with no chance at redemption. I think if this were a book that tried a little bit more with its theming or attempted to tell a grander narrative, it would have seemed a tad shallow, but since it tries for more of a simpler story, I'm going to let it pass.

I was mostly entertained with the book, but I definitely thought it could have gone deeper. At its core, toxic masculinity and how it affects people, both men and women, is its most apparent source of conflict beyond the physical characters. Ruby has had to read the uncouth dangerous thoughts of men who have no issue hurting others for power and control. She knows how they devalue women, and so she tries to protect as many as she can. I think Kulper could have gone further with this angle if she incorporated it into Guy's story as well. As it stands, Guy, a shapeshifter, is more concerned with controlling his ability, thinking it makes him a freak and may have contributed to some horrible things from his past. 

I wonder if making toxic masculinity a part of Guy's journey as well would have done more for strengthening certain themes of the book, as well as give him a stronger connection with Ruby. In a world and time where the strong, debonair man reigns supreme and is the set standard, Guy, a shy, flustering nerdish type, would have no doubt felt the pressures of society to become something greater in order to flourish. Using his abilities to contort and mold himself into what society wants, only to realize that those expectations were dangerous and twisted, would have been a great source of internal conflict, showing that toxic masculinity harms not only women, but also men in the long run. If pulled off well, it could have made for a more interesting and layered read.

As it is, Murder for the Modern Girl is more of a popcorn sort of book, enough to be entertained, but nothing too insightful. I still had a lot of fun with it, especially with its aspects of magical realism, the aesthetic of the time period, and Ruby's gumption and determination. Kulper has another book set in this world coming out soon so I definitely will be checking that out when it releases.

pandora doesn't understand the concept of love ( she isn't the god of love and lust after all ). she thinks love is what devotees give to her when they decide to worship her, which isn't entirely wrong. it is a form of love but not the romantic kind. she had always considered obsession to be love for her, the need to want to crawl under someone's skin, to want to be the air they breath, cannibalism = love, that sort of thing. it isn't even in a lust kind of way either, pandora doesn't feel sexual desire tho she does act like a succubus in a sense. she may indulge on sexual acts with other gods/deities but she thinks of it as nothing more than sharing a mutual bond or a fight to dominate the other. she kinda is the one-night stand kind of gal unless they want to give her a second chance considering others don't like sticking around for too long due to her chaotic nature.

and yeah i ship her with ford but kinda like how i ship billford, pandora sees ford as a passionate devotee who puts up with her more than any other human she has encountered. his need for knowledge is intoxicating to her bc she can do the most insane things and he'll eat that shit right up bc wowo he is so interested in her that he writes report after report of her powers and creations. he gives her attention constantly too which is another huge green flag for pandora and doesn't want him to think about anyone else as much as he thinks about her. possessiveness, that's also another term for love for her. and ofc in ford's pov, he is a sucker for godly entities with vast knowledge of the world and then some that are willing to give to him. everything is for science and research and he can't stop craving for more. sure, ford has more of a chance to fall in love ( and maybe he does idk yet kek ) and he is well aware that he can't stop thinking about her. and sometimes he debates whether it be bc he actually likes LIKES her or bc pandora is a wild card who might've implanted a "spell" on him to force him to think about her so it gets him fumbled and distrustful at times but he still finds himself back at her feet so ye.

I mean, it depends on when you're entering our canon! I think that it was one of those pairings where it was a very gradual learning about each other. Despite her best efforts to know everything immediately.

2. Were there any traits or things about your F/O that you didn’t know about until after you got together?

Again, we're such a gradual collision, if that makes sense? It feels hard to pinpoint what I knew 'before' and 'after.' I had never seen her soft before we got together. I didn't know that she ever calmed down, ever turned off that laser focus that she showed in our early days together. That was definitely a revelation. That she could hold me gently, that she could lie down and close her eyes. I couldn't picture that when I first met her at all.

3. Have you influenced each other’s hobbies/interests? Do you feel you’ve “rubbed off” on each other’s personalities?

Definitely! Her endless curiosity about things has rubbed off on me, and I listen to her infodump about magic/science things so often that my brain is very slowly picking up on things. In return, I think that she enjoys nature more: it's where I grew up, and it's where I go when I need to be calmed down. In my company, she has an easier time not seeing the forest as just a source of potential knowledge, but an actual concrete thing to be enjoyed with the senses.
