We could all use a little Mermaid Magic in our life. When things in my life get a bit too much I pour over the treasures I have found on my trips to the ocean. Shells, sand dollars, crab claws, bird bones, coral, stones and more. Just holding these in my hand, feeling their power, their lesson to go with the flow, to remember that this moment too will pass. I image this is much what a Mermaid feels as she swims among all these glorious treasures - simple, pure Mermaid Magic. I have a set of watercolors that I mixed myself about a year or so ago. At the time I didn’t have any watercolor pans to put them in so I cleaned 8 of the smaller shells I found during my journeys and used them to hold my colors. It has since become my favorite set to pull out and use. I always wonder if they have a magical quality in them, being in a sea shell. . It’s still surprises me when a painting turns out nothing like I envisioned and ends up being a true illustration of what I’m feeling. This started out with bright pinks and blues , very light and happy and when I had almost finished I hated it. Nothing about it felt real. I took this colored called bloodstone it’s almost a black purple and began to cover the entire page with it. It gave it almost a dirty grungy look. I then proceeded to use that same color and go over each of the butterflies changing their pretty and light color to a dark dreary look. When I finished I added a few more dark butterflies and as I looked at it the word “hidden” popped into my head . There are days I feel like I’m hidden in all the mess, the messy tangle of feelings and emotions from life. Hidden from all that’s beautiful and bright even though all that is right before my eyes. No matter how much I tried to make her smile more she ended up with such a somber look, so I’m going with it. She is called Grace. She embodies a strength most do not know, it is only seen when confronted with the worst of times or situations, yet even then those who don’t know her will call her weak. Weak Bc she will shed tears, and show compassion. But those are not weaknesses those are her strengths and the way she is able to connect on a deeper level with others and herself. Well hello my little friend. I’ve always loved whimsical owls. Something you might not know is that my first ever sold painting was of an owl, my most sold print in my Etsy shop was of an owl and This is my first watercolor owl and She makes me happy. I like that she’s a bit quirky and imperfect, she has soulful eyes and just the right combination of happy and sad, in those eyes. I tend to jump around with my art because I just like to try so many things. I am challenging myself to create at least 5 owls in watercolor. I would like to commit to 10 but when I think of that number in my head it feels like so many. 😩So for now I’m going to commit to 5. These make me happy 😃 I was cleaning my studio table up the other day and stacked all my “practice / doodles” together. As I looked through them contemplating on throwing out the sheets ( bc realize these are scraps of paper with all kinds of “tests” typically on both sides lol. But there were some things I really liked and didn’t want to part with So I decided I’m just gonna cut out the piece I like and I can glue them into my journal if I want. There are days when I feel cracked or broken open. The sadness from my grief, the hole inside me from many losses, the pain I often hide inside. I wonder what the world would look like if we could actually see what others are going through, if their inside was on the outside. Would we be kinder, gentler, more loving to others? Lots to think about in a world that I feel is so broken. Maybe just for today we could see the “inside” of people share a smile with someone, or a warm hello. These are things that are free, we have been giving the gift of love and kindness, you can’t use it up so why are we so reluctant to use these gifts? Today I’m using @prima_watercolor decadent pies palette. I did have to sneak one color in from the Tropicals palette as I need a touch of pink for my hydrangea :). . Watercolor Tip: A fantastic way to practice watercolor is to look for fun things to paint around your home and set up a little display so you can actually see the shadows and highlights on an object.
