General Thoughts on Jamming with Cherry Jam

One of the better song episodes we've had this season, with the fiddle and celtic style helping it stand out. And it was fun to hear the various things everyone was up to (I, too, would want to see if ferret parks are actually a thing). But one has to wonder why Cherry Jam and the others are still wearing their berry fairy wings. You'd think that they would have come up with a new look after splitting off from Sherry Bobbleberry. Still, it was nice to see them again.

Now that there are credits on the youtube uploads, it seems a bit egregious not to credit Cherry Jam and the others, while including Lime's singing voice (as a stunt singer?). Sure, there's a lot of voices, but come on.

The straight to dvd special that they feature in that I watch so often on long car rides when I was a kid is free on YouTube and they are everything to me I love them so much

If you have a spare forty minutes and want to experience a piece of my childhood you should go watch it! Every time I see unripe strawberries I still think of Margalo and I know all of Sherry’s solo by heart I love them so much <3

3. Of the 8 main characters, Lemon Meringue, Blueberry Muffin, Bread Pudding, and Sour Grapes are the only main characters who have not received a musical episode that focuses on them. So far, they have only sung in group songs.

4. Bread Pudding is the only main character who has NEVER been heard singing without another berry accompanying him. Berry Merry Melody, Huck's New Job, Beat The Heat, Let The Good Times Roll, Scary-Oke, Sweet Victory, A Splash of Fun, and Turn Things Around all have him sing as part of an ensemble or in a duet with someone else (usually Huckleberry)

5. This is a bar graph comparing each character and the number of episodes they've sung in (as of Turn Things Around).

As you can see, Strawberry has sung the most at 22 times, while Sour Grapes has the lowest at 7.

6. Huckleberry Pie is the only main character whose debut is also a musical episode.

7. Purple Pieman, Aunt Praline, and the Berry Fairies are the only non-main characters to receive music episodes, being villain, supporting, and minor characters respectively.

Purple Pieman technically has 2 songs, but his second is the intentionally bad rap he had in Hot, Fresh, and Trending, which was not a music episode

The Berry Fairies also technically have 2 songs, Find Your Voice and Contrary Berry (which is stated to be theirs by Orange Blossom in Best New Year's EVER), however, none of the Fairies have ever been heard singing the latter song.

8. Sherry Bobbleberry, despite being the Berry Fairies' (former) lead singer, is the only member of the band who did not sing at any point. Ironic, ain't it?

Summer of Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Fairy Tales

I liked the episodes on this DVD a little bit more than the previous ones, but that's mostly due to the first one. The second one just makes my head hurt.

Taken as a whole, the Strawberryland view on fairies is not a particularly pleasant one. Nearly every fairy we meet is selfish and unpleasant. The first episode makes it seem like it's just Margalo who needs an attitude adjustment, but then we actually go to fairyland in the second episode and nope! They're all just like that. No wonder we never saw them again.

The first episode is a little annoying with the whole 'liar's reveal' plot, but it has what I think is the best song in the whole 2003 reboot, Merry Berry Fairy, so I will forgive it a lot for that. The second episode, however, has no redeeming qualities at all. (Okay, maybe some of Ginger Snap's lines, but that's it.) The whole thing is just riddled with plot contrivances to make the story work, and on top of that, the last song is just a recap of the whole story we literally just watched!

Considering that these two episodes are meant to go together, when Sherry was trying to get someone, anyone, to listen to her warning, why not have Strawberry suggest they try to find Margalo? This story is clearly set after that one (since Custard mentions the fairy princess class system), so it would make sense for them to try and get her help. Of course, asking the second episode to make sense is perhaps a bit much. Still, even just a throw-away line about her being out in the strawberry fields, or something, would have been enough. Ah well.
