My first book of the Doctor series arrived this week and another one will come by the end of the month.

As a librarian I care a lot for books much more than digital reading and the German company who print PDF's into books is surely happy about their returning costumer:)

I also love nothing more than inventing a whole world attached to an AU story.

My teachers used to say I had way too much imagination but decades after finishing school it came in handy.

My mind allows me to create a world I enjoy as much as watching the series years ago.

Sometimes even more.

I let the company print my favourite stories from the 22 part series which make each book heavy and around 900 pages.

This series means as much to me as the original BBC show because besides it's great and high quality it gave me inspiration to work through my depression this summer and most of all it shows a Sherlock I can relate to.

Sherlock and all his issues and what others ( except) him would call a disability are so well described and shows his strength and weakness in equal measures and his constant fight for himself and John and often we see that Sherlock simply feels too deeply and get easily hurt.

John is equally greatly described!

His patience, loyalty and sometimes temper ( in normal actions and situations) is certainly another highlight.

And makes you love the character even more than before.

But even the characters you can't relate or won't are so extraordinary largely scaled and considered from different psychological angles that you can't stop thinking about.

Not an easy read and some chapters are triggering but important to understand Dr. Holmes and yourself.

You can't explain going through the rain without getting wet:)

Dr. Holmes and Dr.Watson are so real for me as the detective and his blogger.

The character analyses in this stories are exceptional and I go through all kind of emotions every time I'm reading it.

That's why I love to create their own visual world.

Do we really need a million adaptations of Sherleck Holmes. Like, even if sherlock isn’t a boring white dude?  That’s Great but I’d still rather see a completely original story with a completely original detective that is not a boring white dude. There are only so many ways you can make a pun of a study in scarlet.

Sherlock Frankenstein and the Legion of Evil - Dark Horse Comics

I’m not going to say it - but I can’t NOT say it. JEFF LEMIRE IS JUST REALLY GOOD Y’ALL!

This book is just a great sleuth story. You follow Lucy Weber, proud daughter of Black Hammer - a Green Lantern parallel in Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer universe. She is a recent graduate of journalism school, and is setting out to solve the mystery of what happened to her father. You see, 10 years ago, Black Hammer and may of the “Bronze Age” heroes disappeared while fighting the Anti-God. The problem is no one knows why or where they went; most people assume they are dead. But not Lucy. She feels that her father is still alive and desperately wants him to be. She decides that the only way to find information about him is to find some of the greatest villains her father ever faced. After all, all the heroes that he fought with have disappeared or died. The villains are all that are left.

She then goes off on a fantastic detective adventure. Fantastic in that it is easy to read, you learn what you need to know as you go, and she ACTUALLY learns about clues actively. She is no Mary Sue, but is only determined, smart, and finds things through chance and the incompetence of those trying to stop her. She is passionate and creative, and gets herself into and out of situations using those skills. But what else can you expect from the daughter of the world’s greatest hero?

But Jeff Lemire does not leave Lucy Weber to steal the stage. This is not a just a story about Lucy trying to find her father, but also frames villains in empathetic and horrible ways. Sherlock Frankenstein is an immortal man who does now want to be alone, who has retired from evil in shame and the loss of his recent love; Mectoplasm is a boy who died who was then resurrected into the body of a robot, and all he wants is a TV back in his room. Cthu-Lou is a mild mannered plumber named Lou who was turned into an emissary for the Elder God Cthulhu living in the sewers; he only commited crimes because Cthulhu commanded him to do so. The Metal Minotaur was a woman who would create massive suits of power armor that was eventually brought down by her own hubris when a too large machine broke her back and paralyzed her. It makes these villains good villians, because you get a glimpse into their “why” and the variety of cause and effects that create villains. Some are resurrected robot zombies, others are possessed by horrifying squid Gods and maybe some must wanted the power that came with controlling the world. None of them claim they’re good, but the ones that could certainly did not shy away from their second chances. 

David Rubin’s art style is also very innovative. Usually when people read comics you read one page at a time, reading panels from left to right almost like when reading a book. Artists do sometimes use full spreads and use a variety of tricks, like overlaying panels, having characters reach across multiple panels, or even using speech bubbles to direct your vision and control how we understand the action on the page. Sometimes that disrupts the regular flow of comic reading, and I almost wonder if David Rubin delights in doing that. 

He used full page spreads a LOT, which is actually pretty good. You can get a lot of story telling done that way, and show a lot of continuous action. He then uses all that space to upset the traditional reading flow. On one page, for example, you had to read the page in a circle, like you were also following the hallways and staircases down like the characters on the page. He broke from traditional panels a lot, too, using panels to show sub-conversations or other activities that did not fit in the main action. This really demonstrated the vastness of spaces; frankly, it felt a bit cinematic, and really allowed for the story to flow smoothly. 

I can’t really say that Black Hammer is a good comic for beginners. Jeff Lemire uses a lot of shortcuts when referring to his characters. For example, it helps to know what Sherleck Frankenstein meant when he was talking about Golden, Silver, and Bronze Age heroes. But I still recommend it for people who like super heroes, but maybe have had enough Batman, Thor, and Superman in their life.

just make sure you’re caught up with the new episodes or check what blogs tag spoilers and have xkit blacklist because it’s dog-eat-dog out there and spoilers are EVERYWHERE... though i assume if you’re following me you have this part figured out
