Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964

This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

James Denton Reunites With Son on Screen for ‘Perfect Harmony’ on Hallmark; Will Perform Original Song With Sherri Saum 

James Denton will star alongside his son, Sheppard Denton, in Hallmark‘s “Perfect Harmony,” a new original moving premiering in the fall on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Sherri Saum will also star.

In, “Perfect Harmony,” Denton portrays Jack Chandeller while Saum plays Barrett Woodword. When thier mutual friends, Naomi (Julia Benson) and Simon (Peter Benson), are ready to tie the knot, they ask the duo to be Best Man and Maid of Honor.

“Barrett is a buttoned-up college professor. Jack on the other hand, is a laid-back, former pop star. They have been like oil and water since they met 10 years prior but, to support Naomi and Simon, they agree to set aside their differences,” the movie’s description reads. “At the engagement party, Barrett is horrified to learn Jack’s plan for party music was nothing more than a playlist. She guilts him into performing but he insists she join him on stage, much to his son Teddy’s (Sheppard Denton) dismay as Barrett also happens to be his professor. Jack and Barrett bring down the house with their duet and with that, the frost between them begins to thaw. As Jack and Barrett continue to spend time together leading up to the wedding, they surprisingly find themselves getting along. Slowly, they begin to change their perceptions of each other and find they may be more in tune than either of them would have imagined.”

Denton will perform original song “Ooh Wee Ooh,” as well as “Perfect Harmony,” the latter a duet with Saum. Original music is composed by Jack Lenz.

“James Denton has long been an audience favorite and we can’t wait for viewers to see him showcase his musical talent in this role,” says Elizabeth Yost, senior vice president of programming at Hallmark. “The story is fun and full of heart, and sharing the screen with his son Sheppard is an added bonus.”

“Auto Theft Penalty To Be Made Stiff,” Toronto Star. November 30, 1917. Page 13. --- Instructions by Attorney-General to Judges and Magistrates --- No more kid gloves treatment for motorcar thieves, announced Magistrate Denton to-day. ‘I jave received a letter from the Attorney-General practically instructing me to treat these cases very differently in future,’ said his Worship. ‘The same instructions have been sent, I understand, to all judges and magistrates in the city.’ And for a moment Wm. Pitton, Charles Long, John Sheppard, and George Williams, four young lads, seemed likely to be the first victims of the new severity. Ten days ago they pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing an auto from J. Medland, but explained that they had merely one for a ride and brought the machine back again. His Worship convicted them, but remanded them ten days for sentence. Crown Attorney Corley took it that that was their punishment, and refused bail. To-day, because of the Attorney-General’s letter, the magistrate was for making an example of them, but Mr. Corley and the owner of the car pleaded an effectively that his Worship reluctantly made it only ten days more in jail. It was Sam Corbett’s second time for B.O.T.A. Six months – no alternatives. Tough Luck, By Gum! Seen dumping a big box of gum, which didn’t belong to him, off a truck which he was driving for the Dominion Express Company, John Mulhall was accused of stealing the gum from his employers. On that, and on a second charge of stealing a $400 Persian lamb coat from Holt, Renfrew and Comapny, he was committed for trial. A Distinguished Democrat. Announcing himself as the son of the ex-President of the United States, John Arthur Taft went down to the Union Station, baggage in hand, to arrange for his ‘special’ train. It wasn’t on hand and the hartless railway officials made no effort to get one; in fact, they seemed quite disregardful of their distinguished customer, other than to hand him over to the police. John Arthur seemed disposed to criticize Canada’s railway system a bit in Police Court to-day, but Clerk Webb pacified him by the assurance that the doctor at the Reception Hospital would ‘fix’ all that. ‘He’s a great arranger, is that doctor,’ said Mr. Webb. ‘Oh, he’s a fine fellow that way.’ ‘Am I going for duration?’ asked the distinguished one. ‘Oh, no, just a week,’ said he comforter. ‘Merely to see what arrangements we can make.’ J. Arthur departed satisfied that everything would be all right and the ‘special’ would come through in due course. Two Disputants Remanded A week’s remand was given to Benjamin Rosenberg and Jacob Cooperberg, who were arrested last night on a charge of disorderly conduct following a clash at Elizabeth and Dundas streets. Too Many Bonds Lost. ‘Where’s the bail bond?’ demanded Magistrate Denison. ‘That’s what I would like to know,’ replied Crown Attorney Corley. ‘This is becoming serious. We are losing a bail bond every day.’ Then it developed that, although technically out on bail, Aberdeen Le Gash was actually in custody. But Mr. Corley hastened to explain that he had been re-arrested by the immigration authorities. His wife, Margeret Le Gash, could not be found, and so a warrant was issued for her arrest. On a charge of keeping a resort they were both remanded until December 4th.

These Biglaw Firms Are Officially Diversity Certified

A little over a year ago, a bold idea was formed at a Diversity Lab event, the Women in Law Hackathon. Modeled after the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview a minority candidate for head coach or general manager vacancies, the idea first proposed by Mark Helm, a partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson, was to create a system to encourage Biglaw firms to consider women or minority candidates for leadership roles at the firm.

Named the Mansfield Rule after Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to practice law in the U.S., asks firms to consider two or more candidates who are women or attorneys of color when hiring for leadership and governance roles, promotions to equity partner, and hiring lateral attorneys. And, if the firms can demonstrate 30 percent of the pool for these positions are diverse, they’ll be “Mansfield Certified.” A year later, we have our first official list of Mansfield Certified firms.

A total of 50 firms are in the process of implementing the rule, and in its inaugural year, 41 firms have been Mansfield Certified:

The Diversity Lab is continuing to work with the firms that are working toward this goal.

That so many firms have signed onto the program is seen as a great success, as reported by Law.com:

“Law firms are not typically early adopters on risky endeavors, especially ones where the results will be made public,” said Caren Ulrich Stacy, CEO of the Diversity Lab, which worked with the firms to implement the Mansfield Rule.

“But these 41 firms showed their true desire to boost diversity in leadership by trying something new and tough to implement,” she said.

Another benefit law firms have seen from implementing the rule is documenting just how well they’re doing on questions of diversity:

“The Mansfield Rule has really brought a rigor and discipline to the whole process,” said David Koschik, partner and member of White & Case’s executive committee.

“It’s also caused us to look at situations where we might either not have a female partner or diverse partner in our minds ready for a leadership opportunity [and] it’s caused us to look at why that is,” he said.

Diversity Lab is currently working on Mansfield 2.0, which will expand the rule to include LGBTQ+ attorneys.

STUDIO CITY, CA – September 30, 2022 – James Denton (“Desperate Housewives,” “A Kiss Before Christmas”) and Sherri Saum (“The Fosters”) star in “Perfect Harmony,” a new original premiering Sunday, October 16, (9 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Sheppard Denton reunites with his father on-screen for the first time since his debut role in Hallmark Channel’s “For Love and Honor” in 2016. Denton performs the original song “Ooh Wee Ooh,” and Saum duets with him on “Perfect Harmony,” also written especially for the movie.

When Jack Chandeller (Denton) and Barrett Woodward’s (Saum) mutual friends Naomi (Julia Benson, “Seasoned with Love”) and Simon (Peter Benson, “Big Sky River”) are ready to tie the knot, they ask the pair to be Best Man and Maid of Honor. Barrett is a buttoned-up college professor. Jack on the other hand, is a laid-back, former pop star. They have been like oil and water since they met 10 years prior but, to support Naomi and Simon, they agree to set aside their differences. At the engagement party, Barrett is horrified to learn Jack’s plan for party music was nothing more than a playlist. She guilts him into performing but he insists she join him on stage, much to his son Teddy’s (Sheppard Denton) dismay as Barrett also happens to be his professor. Jack and Barrett bring down the house with their duet and with that, the frost between them begins to thaw. As Jack and Barrett continue to spend time together leading up to the wedding, they surprisingly find themselves getting along. Slowly, they begin to change their perceptions of each other and find they may be more in tune than either of them would have imagined.

Famille :  Il est né en 1963 à  Nashville (Tennessee, USA), cadet d’une famille de 3 enfants. Son père était dentiste, avait servi dans l’armée et s’occupait de la musique dans l’église méthodiste Westmoreland United de Westmoreland.

En 1997, il épouse Jenna Lyn Ward, dont il divorce en 2000. En 2002, il épouse Erin O’Brien, rencontrée sur scène en jouant dans la même pièce de théâtre et avec qui il a 2 enfants : Sheppard, à qui il chantait Singing in the rain quand il était petit, car il en aime le style, et est devenu par conséquence la chanson préféré de son fils, et Mailin. Sa femme et lui ont (eu) ouvert une salle de sport dans laquelle elle donne des cours. C’est d’ailleurs elle qui l’a “maintenu en forme” pour son rôle dans Desperate Housewives.

Etudes :  Il est diplômé de l’Université du Tennessee en télévision et journalisme. Il y a appris la langue française... et a repris des cours particuliers intensifs en 2024 pendant sa participation à Danse Avec Les Stars !

Carrière professionnelle :  D’abord dans le secteur de la publicité, il quitte cette première carrière professionnelle à 23 ans pour se lancer dans le théâtre. Il déménage à Chicago et devient comédien dans le The Griffin Theater and Strawdog Theater Ensemble. Son premier rôle sur les planches est celui de Stanley dans la pièce  A Streetcar Named Desire. Dans les années 90′, il joue son premier rôle dans la série TV The Untouchables. Une décennie plus tard, ses projets l’amènent vers les séries TV et des apparitions dans des films. C’est ainsi qu’il se retrouve sur le même film qu’Harve Presnell en 1997.

Il tient un rôle principal de vétérinaire dans la série The Hanleys avant qu’ABC décide d’annuler sa diffusion. Il se console avec son rôle de Mr Lyle dans la série Le Caméléon.

Il obtient ensuite le rôle de Mike dans Desperate Housewives sur ABC, après le non-renouvellement de sa série Agence Matrix. Beaucoup d’acteurs et de membres de l’équipe technique ont travaillé pour ces deux séries. Pour son rôle emblématique de plombier dans la série culte Desperate Housewives, il remporte des prix collectifs, et profite du confort apporté par le succès de cette série pour développer son talent musical en jouant dans son groupe 16:9. Il joue en effet du piano et de la guitare en famille depuis toujours.  Et a écrit une chanson pour sa femme :)

Le succès de cette série populaire lui permet également de représenter des marques : Serengeti (2009) et Daniel Hechter (2011/2014), dont le parfum ‘Caractère’. Cette dernière collaboration professionnelle l'amènera jusqu’en  France, puisque les vidéos promotionnelles auront lieu, entre autres, à Paris, puis à Bordeaux.

A la fin de cette série, il prend une pause pour déménager et s’occuper de sa famille, dont la belle-sœur est touchée par un cancer du sein. Puis petit à petit, il revient devant la caméra, mais avec des projets dont le tournage est géographiquement proche ou comportant peu d’épisodes, comme la série Good Witch en 2015. Il connaissait déjà l’actrice principale pour avoir joué en 2003 dans un épisode de la série JAG ... qui a vu les débuts de son ex-partenaire  Andrea Parker.

Ayant la confiance des directeurs de la chaîne Hallmark, il a alterné les tournages canadiens saisonnier de la série Good Witch avec un TVfilm pour la même chaîne, et enfin des pièces de théâtre là où vit sa famille. A la fin de cette série TV, il a poursuivi son partenariat avec la chaîne, qui lui a donné l’opportunité de (co)produire des TVfilm, dont deux partagés avec son fils aîné, Sheppard  (Instagram), pour la première fois ensemble à l’écran, faisant décidément le goût de la scène une affaire de famille, même si ses enfants ne veulent pas en faire leur métier à l’âge adulte.

Pour la même chaîne, il a présenté à plusieurs reprises une émission annuelle qui met en valeur le rôle des animaux dans notre quotidien : Hero Dog Awards

Il a mis de longues années avant de rejoindre les réseaux sociaux, dont il se méfie, a d’ailleurs supprimé des comptes (Twitter) et renommé d’autres (Instagram). Durant un laps de temps où l’un de ses comptes était actif, l’acteur en a profité pour publier un  message de soutien pendant le Sras-covid19. Depuis, l’acteur se tient de nouveau loin des réseaux sociaux... jusqu’à l’émission télévisuelle française Danse Avec Les Stars !

Avec d’autres acteurs de séries TV, il a également formé un groupe de musique caritatif, à l’image des Enfoirés en France : Band From TV. L’acteur y joue de la guitare, talent qu’il démontre par ailleurs dans quelques scènes des séries Desperate Housewives et Good Witch, ainsi que dans les Tvfilms. Il a également profité du confinement Covid-19 pour mettre sa fille à la guitare, son fils en jouant aussi (Instagram), et le donne en conseil pour une quarantaine durant une interview à Today. 

Il a récolté également des fonds via des tournois caritatifs de baseball, via le Taco Bell MLB All-Star Legends & Celebrity ou bien encore le Steve Garvey Celebrity Softball Game, ici avec l’actrice Alyssa Milano (Charmed) :

Fan de ce sport, il participe même aux entraînements officiels d’équipe locale de baseball, comme en 2011, et assiste souvent à des matchs. Il a  d’ailleurs appelé l’un de ses chiens Dodger, du nom de l’équipe de Baseball qu’il affectionne.

Il lui est également arrivé de récolter des fonds caritatifs via des tournois de golf ou d’athlétisme ou de basket... comme un certain Willie Gault ou Jeffrey Donovan. Ou encore au bowling et au poker... comme une certaine Andrea Parker.

Il vit actuellement dans le Minnesotan et une partie de l’année à Los Angeles pour ses projets professionnels... à la marina^^ ... en mode Ma Seule Famille (2015) ^^.

Le 13 octobre 2022 l’acteur James Denton a donné une interview au TV Guide pour promouvoir la diffusion du TVfilm Perfect Harmony.

Après avoir rappelé le lien qui lie l’acteur avec la chaîne Hallmark, avec la série Good Witch et sa saison 7 terminée en 2021, l’article introduit son personnage Jack Chandeller dans le TV film Perfect Harmony, qui chantera le titre original : "Ooh Wee Ooh,".

Et après avoir rappelé que son fils joue son propre fils dans le tv film, et qu’il s’agit de la 3ème collaboration après For Love and Honor (2015) et Kiss Before Christmas (2021) avec sa partenaire de la série Desperate Housewives, l’article annonce que deux chansons seront chantées en duo : "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" et "Total Eclipse of the Heart".

James Denton : "I love this movie," [...] "My co-producer Jonathan Eskenas came to me and said, 'I know you play guitar, why don't we do something that's music centered?'  That was the germ of the idea. Jon and I trying to come up with something that hadn't been done."

C’est donc connaissant la pratique musicale de l’acteur que ce tv film a été conçu, sachant que ses deux enfants jouent aussi de la guitare et pour sa fille, chante aussi.

TV Guide : What do you like about being a producer? James Denton : This is the first one where I had my hands in everything. This one was really a labor of love. It's sort of perfect for my stage of life because I'm not chasing work like I used to. I'm slowing down a little bit on purpose. So I have some time to do things other than act. It's very creatively rewarding and fulfilling not just the pre-production but in the post. There are few examples where I would say, 'I know there's a better take of this.'  That's really rewarding after all these years of being at the mercy of other editors.

TV Guide : And your son gets to play your son in the movie. How did that come about ? James Denton : We wrote my son into this because I just think he's a brilliant actor. It's wasted that he's not doing it for a living. I owe Hallmark a lot for letting me cast him sight unseen. He didn't have to audition. We wrote the role for him.

TV Guide : What was it like working with him ? James Denton : We had a ball. We were there for almost five weeks. We had an apartment in Winnipeg. It was one of the best times of my life easily. We would talk a little bit of movie at home, a little bit of scenes, but basically, we left that to the director. It's tricky as a dad on set because you are biting your tongue a lot. We didn't talk much shop we just had a lot of fun, eating junk food and just hanging out. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I wish more actors got to have because being across from him in front of a camera, there's nothing like it.

TV Guide : Are there any scenes that come specifically from your life together ? James Denton : We added a couple of scenes just because of the conversations he and I had at home. There's a scene where I walk in and he's playing the guitar. I wanted to be able to say, 'When did you get better than your old man?' because I've said it 100 times at home. [In] another scene, he was having trouble really letting me have it because I'm his dad. Between takes I said, 'Remember that time you went off on mom and me at dinner about trying to put you in all these clubs, and you finally just snapped?' And I said, 'Yes! That! Action !

TV Guide : But Sheppard doesn't want to act full-time ? James Denton : He's at the University of the South getting a psychology degree. He's a musician. He has music on Spotify. On his songs, he plays all the instruments – drums, bass, guitar, horns. He's a fantastic musician so if he could do that, I think he would quit school and do that.

TV Guide : To turn to the romance of the movie, you and Sherri Saum have such good chemistry. James Denton : Sherri is so grounded and heartfelt. She was a revelation. She has a quality about her that's almost regal. I fall in love with her every time I watch the movie.

TV Guide : I liked the maturity of their relationship. James Denton : [laughs] When you cast me, you get maturity. We wanted to come up with characters where it made sense that this is where they were in their lives, kind of set in their ways and that makes it a little more fun to watch them—both her journey with coming out artistically and having the guts to be published and my character not just professionally but also romantically. We see both of them sort deal with the insecurities and self-doubt and overcome them in 88 minutes.

TV Guide : Do you think there's a larger message viewers might take away from this movie ? James Denton : I hope there's a lesson to people that you can apologize. These two people apologize a lot and there's power in that.

TV Guide : You both sing in this movie.  Both original songs and covers. James Denton : I'm not a singer.

TV Guide : This movie would say otherwise ! James Denton : Thank God for pitch correction. I can get by. The trick is to be so synced that people buy it. All the guitar is me. All the singing is Sherri and myself but I definitely feel better if we can lay it down before and get it sweetened a little bit.

TV Guide : Is there a time in the movie when you sang live and didn't pre-record ? James Denton : There's one verse of the song "Perfect Harmony" we did live with just boom mics on the set. I hope we get some credit for that because nobody does that anymore. I survived it. I had just worked that song to death because I knew it was the big finale. I'm good enough to kind of fake it.

TV Guide : The movie has two original songs. The first is "Ooh Wee Ooh" which is Jack's big hit and although it is a silly-sounding title, the song turns out to have a much deeper meaning. Jack wrote the song for his late wife while she was undergoing chemotherapy. James Denton : Jonathan Eskenas wrote the lyrics and Jack Lenz wrote the music to make it an earworm that just felt like silly mouth sounds. Jack is such a kind of cheesy, one-hit guy. We hope people will go back and listen to the song and it's so obvious that he's talking about someone getting better. Barrett says a couple of times I presumed the popular was simple and I was wrong.

TV Guide : This movie gets a little more serious than many Hallmark movies. James Denton : A lot of people don't want to feel anything negative while watching a Hallmark movie which is why this is on Movies & Mysteries. The Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel they are doing a little deeper dive. There are things we did in this movie that we would not have been able to on Hallmark. That scene where my son throws down the book and kind of gets in my face?   You can't raise your voice on Hallmark. We were able to do more.

TV Guide : The movie has a happy ending but it also seems like just the beginning of Jack and Barrett's story. Will there be a Perfect Harmony 2? James Denton : I hope so. I loved working with Sherri. It seems like a no-brainer. Obviously, it's a business and a lot of it is based on the numbers. It's screaming to me to have a sequel. We've bounced around a lot of ideas about what happens to these two and so there's conversation.  

TV Guide : What's next for you? James Denton : Hallmark has approached me about doing a movie next spring about empty nesters. We just found out they are going to put that in production and that I'll also produce that with Jonathan Eskenas.
