December 25
Tall men were these, the shepherds come from flocks
And wearing sheephides with the dew still wet
Upon the wool…
No further movement
Till the youngest, kneeling still, moved on
From out the rest, and when his eyes had marked
The swaddling bands… and did not shrink at what he saw.
The full words spilled out to her in eagerness
Of quiet flocks, the brightness of the sky…
The music that had sifted
Down, more fragile than the light of stars…
The upswept choirs and surge and flight of wings:
I bring you tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people: for this day is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David. And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger…Glory to God in the highest: and on earth peace to men of good will.
(Excerpted from A Woman Wrapped in Silence By John W. Lynch)
Today's Reflection:
How swiftly the shepherds respond! How quickly do you respond to the call of God? What causes you to hold back an immediate response? The angels tell the shepherds, “I bring you tiding of great joy…” How can these words encourage you to respond more quickly. Why do you think it is the youngest who tells Mary about what he saw?

How to Dream Like a Pagan - History Documentary
Personal...when being taught to understand and interpret dreams of importance (not all are, believe it or not...) one of the ways I learned to coerce myself into lucid dreaming re the subject matter I wanted to discover was in sensory deprivation. In the same way flotation tanks were once a “thing”, ancient Celts and other cultures had similar methods (one involving being sewn inside bullhides which was also a rite of passage but provided symbolic, life changing dreams and visions).
Now, lacking flotation tanks (and I wouldn’t go there, tbh) I found the beginning of “Jive’s” pretty trippy vid bringing back memories. My trade in life was as an animal hide tanner, so sheepskins and deerhides I’d no lack of. My father also tanned red deerhides. So I learned to sleep on deerhides (over time, they soften to buttery beauty) and to put sheephides under them, and cover myself with more deerhides, when I wanted to delve into the dreaming world.
The red deer is a creature that means a great deal to me. Aged thirteen I dreamed of riding a red stag across a hill nearby our crofthouse and into a cave in the hill (that didn’t actually exist in “real” life). Since then my life has always been tied up, in many ways, with red deer. (Take note of what Jive says about animal skins btw)
This was my “trick”, my thing, a cocoon, the method I used that primed my mentality to kickstart the subsconscious and let it know what I wanted to do, where I wanted to go. And most of the time, it worked. I developed the routine so that it became as natural as breathing whilst at the same time, nothing commonplace. This was *my* version of being bullhide sewn, or horsehide sewn, this was my version of something my ancestors did and that link with the past helped train my mind to seek what I wanted to find.
There are good *reasons* most shamanic traditions use ritual, theatrical acts and specific practices.
And of course, being Scots born, the practice of finding a hollow hill, barrow or “druid’s temple” to sleep upon isn’t an unknown thing.
I’m retired now (health reasons) but still have many skins and hides with me that I will keep. When I’m ill, I automatically sleep on top of sheepskins. And it automatically makes me feel that bit better, immediately.
The hides and the way we can interract with the spirit of the animal that once wore them is also an aspect of animism.

Ireland Moto Trip Day 05
Westport to Bunratty in THE RAIN
We woke pretty early without much sleep. Two surfers were out on the beach, probably from the van parked across the cove. They didn’t take too many passes before heading back in - it was pretty cold out and I can only imagine how cold the water was. We were able to make coffee and breakfast and pack up the camp gear without rain, which was so key. After looking at a map, we decided it didn’t make much sense to ride back to Westport to meet mom and dad because it was going to take us two hours just to get to their first stop at Dunquaire Castle en route to our next destination, Bunratty. So we texted the plan to meet them at the castle and hit the road again. Then it poured again. I mean like really fucking poured. I was freezing by the time we stopped for gas about 20km out from the castle. Despite the heated grips on the F700 my hands were completely numb (I had on two layers of gloves - one inner layer I use for extremely cold weather snowboarding days and one outer layer of armored leather). My Fox dirt riding boots had collected an actual pool of water inside them by this time. Even the inside of my helmet was wet because I had to vent it to prevent fogging. We had all rented Klim gear from Celtic Rider - jacket and pants to try out for the ride. And it proved to be far superior to any road riding gear I’ve had in the past. And this day tested it’s threshold. My core was completely dry. What Klim gear can’t do is protect your ass from a completely soaked sheepskin seat. Write that down.
A little clip from leaving the camp site and riding to Dunquaire that day:
We finally got to Dunquiare Castle and somehow beat my mom and dad. We found out later they had tried to take a quicker route to get there, and got led THREE times to a road that no longer existed. The first word out of my dad’s mouth when we saw him was “miserable”. I’m laughing now, but at the time it actually was pretty rough. Once we found out the castle was completely outdoors and there was no place to escape the rain, we all said screw castles and decided to just hammer the remaining 80km out to Bunratty on the closest highway we could find.
A completely soaked GoPro and soggy sheephide seat.
In Bunratty we were staying at a place called Bunratty Villa; more of a family-run Inn than a hotel, outside of town in the countryside. It was beautiful, and I was soaked and frozen but all I needed was a nice drink. No bar. Ok a hot shower and then we’d ride into town for a drink. No hot water in the room. For a brief moment I wanted to bail and go to the next town where I could find an actual hotel with an actual bar and actual hot showers, I was SO COLD. But we all dried off, the rain miraculously stoped and we walked the 15 minute walk into town for dinner at Durty Nellies, a bar that had been there since the 1600s (and I stopped being a baby). I’m not sure whether my dad ate more there or on the way there - he obsessively picks blackberries any time he sees them and the streets there were lined with them in every direction. We made a few stops at gas stations and gift shops to pick up some alcohol so our rooms could be properly stocked in the absence of a bar. The family running Bunratty Villa were so extremely nice that it made up for anything originally bothering me. They took all our soaked clothes to wash and dry them, and even hung my sheepskin out on a line to dry.

5 Things To Make 2019 Brighter, Better, and Beautiful
New year, new us! We know you're perfect just the way you are, but there’s nothing like the beginning of a new year to feel like you’ve got a completely clean slate. Whether it’s upping your fitness routine, drinking less coffee, or maybe just getting outside for a walk every now and then, resolutions are about doing something different with the intention of making it a habit. We’ve asked a few of our Hunt Country Volume 7 Members to share with us some of the ways they’re moving into 2019.
Paige Buscema.
1. NO EXCUSES MONDAY
‘No Excuses Monday’ is the creation of Paige Buscema, Owner and Founder of Eyetopia, Inc. “I council local small businesses from time to time in my community here in Leesburg”, Paige says. “ I instituted "No Excuses Monday" to help all of us stay focused on our goals and check tasks off our 'to do" list each week. No Excuses Monday is always started with 10 minutes of gathering my ideas for the day before I get out of bed, 20-30 minutes of exercise before anything else gets done, and closes with a home cooked meal with family or friends as a reward for a day well spent. I also believe every workday morning should begin with at least 8ozs of water. This is a simple way to help your body flush toxins, re-hydrate and prepare for the day ahead. My key to overall happiness is to take 2 days per month that are scheduled exclusively for me, by me and about me. ‘Me’ days prevent burn out and are a required tool in the chest of every accomplished entrepreneur”.
Rosanna Smith. Photo by Candice Adelle Photography.
2. A HEALTHY MINDSET
Our creative friend Rosanna Smith, Owner of Bella Villa Vintage Rentals gave us a good list of things for a positive mindset. “When I’m not on site styling an event or participating in a meeting with other creatives, potential and current clients, or industry colleagues, I’m at my home office alone and working. Here are some of the things I try to stick by to keep my mental health in check:
1. 7.5 hours of sleep 2. 1 espresso shot in the morning (not coffee all day) 3. Olive Oil on my face 4. Brisk walks and fresh air 5. Home made Kefir (no sweetener, and packed with probiotics!) 6. Healthy home grown food 7. Pellegrino (measured water) 8. Red Wine at dinner (1/2 to 2 glasses) 9. Basics and Chores before Ipad and Phone
“I hate when I spend hours just scrolling through Insta feeds etc, when the bed's not made, the dishes are dirty, I'm not dressed, my teeth aren't brushed... sometimes it happens and I don't recommend it”.
Chef Ryan Ross. Photo by Robin Marie Photo.
3. EATING WELL
Chef Ryan Ross of Lovage & Co., who creates some of the most beautiful food we have ever seen, gave us a little inspiring insight on her own health rituals to keep through the new year. “I wake up in the morning, drink warm water with lemon and proceed to eat as many nutrient dense items as possible for my first two meals of the day, or snacks, whatever my day lends it self to, until about mid afternoon”, Ryan says. “Then I feel like I did my due diligence and can go out to eat with friends or eat whatever I would like for dinner! Front loading your day with vegetables and fruits, superfood packed smoothies, whole foods, dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and all of the other delicious and nutritious options out there is a great way to set your day up for success.”
Colleen O’ Bryant.
4. BOTANICAL INTENTIONS
“So, I'm not much of a ‘Resolutioner’ but rather an ‘Intentioner’ ”; a fresh perspective from our friend Colleen O’ Bryant, Herbalist and Owner of Wild Roots Apothecary. “I don't vow but rather intend to put my best efforts into being a better me. When I do mess up, I treat failing as a learning experience and continue to strive towards self-awareness.” Of course, we had to ask her recommendations on how to stay healthy in the new year, after all, Colleen is a magician when it comes to the blending of botanicals and herbs to make remedies. “Herbal medicine and the season of Winter go hand in hand. Rosemary, sage, thyme, cilantro, parsley, and oregano all bring a freshness and vitality to these cold winter months. My favorite way to help eliminate or decrease both the craving and use of sugar is by using sweet or warming herbs. Think of adding cinnamon dust on your apples, nutmeg in your cocoa, or mixing a bit of a Chai tea into your coffee as little herbal boosts”.
Brooke Streep.
5. DON’T OVERCOMPLICATE THE SIMPLE
Our talented friend Brooke Streep, owner and founder of Table Terrain says “My favorite thing to do when the weather is cold, is to enjoy the silence and cuddle up on one of our sheephide rugs, on a comfy chair, and read a good book”. There’s something beautiful in the simple, and Brooke knows it.
Ready to tackle 2019? We’re certainly taking away a few tips from some of the ladies of Volume 7, and we hope you are too.

2019!!!
The year of ME
It’s the 2nd of January and oh boy did December just fly by. I’m sad to be taking down my Christmas tree in a few days..
The last few weeks of work were busy but a lot of fun. We had so many Christmas parties that we barely had enough time for all the meetings and other work. We also got to leave early on Friday the 21st, which was super nice. I went home to my parents on the evening of the 22nd after some much needed me-time and building a cozy Christmas house in the Sims 4. On the 23rd me and mum drove through a literal winter wonderland with trees sugarcoated in fresh snow to visit grandmum, grandpa and my uncle. We helped grandmum with her Christmas cooking and spent a few hours over there before driving back home listening to Christmas music. Grandmum gave me new mittens with flowers and pearls in them that she’s made, and money to go and buy myself a piano book. ♥
The 24th was spent traditionally. I woke up early to watch Christmas cartoons, we had rice porrige for breakfast and went to light up candles at the graveyards. This time I left a candle for my godfather as well.♥ Then it was time for Christmas sauna, although mum couldn’t go (or didn’t want to go?) because her surgery scars are still pretty fresh. It breaks my heart to see her go into the bedroom and close the door and be careful nobody sees her. I hope it’s just because she doesn’t want me to see and it isn’t actually as big of a deal for her but it must be pretty intense having your body go through such changes nonetheless.. After sauna we had a delicious meal (reindeer, parsnip puré, sweet potato fries, beetroot casserole and gravy, with panna cotta for dessert), watched From all of us to all of you (as is tradition) and handed out presents. I got a new set of pajamas, mittens, a giftcard for a pedicure, a giftcard for clothes and a painting (although it’s more like a framed paper cutout craft). Me and my boyfriend also got a present together. Mum and dad really liked their presents as well. I can’t remember if I wrote about them already but I got mum some pajama pants, a new Sauna seat cloth, a shower gel and a hand cream. Dad got a sweater and a Star Wars workout shirt. Both of them got some tea and for our summer house I got a sauna headrest, a book about natural herbs and a bird book.
On the 25th me and dad visited my other grandmum and cousins and had a Christmas lunch with them. My twin cousins are going to start their military service in a few days, which is incredible.. In the evening mum and I went for a long walk and we made pizza for dinner.
On the 26th I went xc-skiing with dad for the first time this winter and it was a lot of fun. I did 6-ish kilometers on my first run this year, which is really motivating. Back in the day 5 km was not even a consideration and now I did it on my first run of the season! Other than that we spent our days until the 27th chilling together and being cozy. It was much needed and so very nice.
My new sleeping cottage was supposed to be delivered to our summer house before Christmas but the truck that was supposed to transport it broke down. Then it was supposed to be loaded up and delivered on the 27th but turns out it was too big to be transported without a permit so I still don’t have it. I hope it gets here soon, it’s been snowing nonstop and it’ll be impossible to transport it in this weather.. I’ve already planned out the layout and furnishings, and even bought a sheephide from my sheep farmer colleague for the main living space. I want it to be spring already!
On the 27th both me and my guy came back to the apartment. He opened my present and I opened my new pair of knit wool socks from his grandpa. My parents got us two board versions of escape room games. We played our first round of The Captain is Dead with little success but it was a lot of fun anyway. On the 28th we went shopping and helped our friend find new frames for new glasses. She came over to try The Captain is Dead with us but we still didn’t win the game. On the 29th I met up with my ballet friends for some frozen pizzas and long chats. It was amazing to see them again since one is in London and the other two have moved across the country. I’m so proud of us for staying in touch since it would be really easy to drift apart now that we don’t go to class together anymore. Every last Friday of the month we tell each other how we’re doing and occasionally message each other in-between.
The 30th of December was spent playing Mass Effect Andromeda with my guy, and for New Years Eve two of our friends came over to make pizza, play Cards Against Humanity, go watch fireworks, play The Captain is Dead (AND finally beat it!) and play The Ultimate Chicken Horse until 4am. We all slept in until past midday on the 1st, my friend left and me and my guy started the Witcher 3 (finally). He’s playing it on my PC because I can’t be bothered to care for Geralt too much as a character and also the game is really graphic for my tastes. I’m reserving the rights to change my opinion on these two points as the game goes on however.
Now that I’m all caught up it’s time for the usual New Years sap. 2018 was a really hard year for me but DAMN if I didn’t SMASH all my goals and achieve so much. I aced my MA thesis and GRADUATED, I found out I passed JLPT N2, I was ASKED for my dream job without even applying for it, I spent 3 AMAZING weeks travelling around Japan and got to cross off Sanrio Puroland from my bucket list. It was the warmest summer since 2014 and I got to spend so much time with mum and dad at our summer house. I got to start a new hobby and tried lots of new things in 2018. Looking at my passion planner from 2015 all my 3 year goals have been achieved and I am so incredibly proud of myself for it. So what about 2019 then?
2019 will be a year to continue the process of reinvention, reassessing and reprioritizing that I was sort of forced to start in 2018 with a new stage in life. That also came with a total lifestyle rebranding in what I eat, what I wear and what I want from my future. 2019 is also a year to dream big and start working towards those dreams. My successes up until now have given me confidence to know that I can achieve any goals, hopes and dreams I set for myself (as long as they’re somewhat realistic).
Being happy and having time to relax are so much easier now that I have a job and I feel like things are exactly the way they’re supposed to be. That also comes with a creeping fear of stagnation, which is why in 2019 I’d like to spend time learning new skills (namely improving my photography and piano) and reading/listening to books and podcasts to keep on learning now that I’m not actively studying anymore. I’d hate to come home from work and waste away on the sofa day after day. In addition to learning new skills and keeping my mind and body occupied I’m going to pay more attention on body conditioning and increasing my flexibility. I finally bought myself a foam roller (a really expensive one at that!) and it’s been worth every cent. I’ve also been following stretching routines and hopefully this spring I could go to a yoga or Body Balance class more often. Another obvious goal is to continue on my fitness path and it is really motivating now that I’ve actually seen results from my diet change in 2018 as well as from starting Body Combat. In more ways than one I feel like 2019 will be my year to relax and spend time on things that matter to me. I’m excited. ☼
So the Tumblr exodus of December 17th 2018 happened and my blog seems largely unaffected. Regardless I’m glad to have a backup of my diary posts just in case. Seems like these random occasional diary posts will continue for now. I’m trying to stick to a minimum of once a month but we’ll see. I’m not going to guilt myself over it since going through my old blog posts I literally wrote which homework I did and on what day. Yes, I know it was mainly to keep myself accountable but still I feel like even though these longer recap posts take hours to write and I might miss important memories or other details the contents are much more relevant than what I ate and which part of the syllabus I revised on what day. Heh.
Happy 2019 - hope it brings relief to the world and success to all the deserving, kind and friendly people. ♥

❝ that’s a nice story. ❞ (from irene, only if you want to!)
“Och, and I’m sure you’ve a better one to tell,” scoffed Rowan. “What could possibly beat a tale of a man being drowned and eaten by a loch-dwelling horse?”

FREYJA AND CATS, THOR AND GOATS...
THE NORSE GODDESS FREYJA WAS, AMONGST OTHER THINGS A GODDESS OF WAR, LOVE, SEIDHR(MAGIC). SHE TRAVELLED IN A CHARIOT PULLED BY CATS.
THOR ALSO TRAVELLED IN A CHARIOT PULLED BY GOATS. HE WOULD FEED HUNGRY PEOPLE HE FOUND, AND HIS OWN SELF, BY SLAUGHTERING THE GOATS AND COOKING AND EATING THEM. COME THE MORNING, THE GOATS WERE AS “NORMAL” AGAIN, ALIVE, KICKING, RARING TO GO.
FREYJA ALSO WORE CAT FUR GLOVES, MITTENS LINED WITH CAT FUR. PERHAPS THIS IS WHAT GAVE THE LINK DOWN THROUGH THE AGES BETWEEN WITCHES AND THEIR CAT FAMILIARS.
IN OLDER TIMES, ANIMALS WERE GIVEN AS SACRIFICE TO THE OLD GODS. THEIR BLOOD WAS POURED OVER SACRED STONES OR THE HEARTH (DOMESTIC MAGIC) AND THE MEAT COOKED AND EATEN.
BEFORE FOLKS GO OFF THE DEEP END ABOUT ANIMAL SACRIFICE, I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT WHICH IS THE MOST DECENT, RESPECTFUL WAY TO TAKE AN ANIMAL’S LIFE.
OFFER IT AS A SACRED BEAST WORTHY ENOUGH TO BE PRESENTED TO THE GODS. NOTHING WASTED, THE BLOOD FED THE GODS AND THE MEAT FED THE PEOPLE. THE HIDE WOULD BE TANNED AND TURNED INTO USEFUL CLOTHING OR OTHER ITEMS.
OR WALKING INTO A SUPERMARKET AND PICKING UP A PACK OF FROZEN BURGERS WHICH STEMMED FROM A BUNCH OF COWS YOU DIDN’T KNOW, DIDN’T REAR AND CAN’T SAY IF THEY LED DECENT LIVES OR NOT?
BEFORE I GO ANY FURTHER, I’M *NOT* ADVOCATING WE ALL GO OUT AND BEGIN SACRIFICING GOATS TO THOR, PIGS TO FREYR, ETC.
ALL MY LIFE, I’VE BEEN AROUND LIVESTOCK. MY PARENTS RAISED COWS, POULTRY, PIGS AND PONIES AND COWS. I DID LIKEWISE (MINUS THE PONIES...TOO EXPENSIVE TO KEEP) AND BEING HEATHEN THERE WERE TIMES “DINNER” WAS TIED UP WITH “BLOT” AND THE GOAT MEAT WE ATE WAS IN HONOUR OF THOR OR ANOTHER DEITY.
MY TRADE WAS AS A SELF EMPLOYED ANIMAL HIDE TANNER.
I’M SCOTTISH (NOT BRITISH) BUT I KNOW THAT BRITS RECOIL IN HORROR AT THE THOUGHT OF EATING HORSEMEAT, YET ON THE CONTINENT IT’S REGULARLY EATEN (AND IT’S VERY TASTY AND GOOD) AND EVEN OUR ANCESTORS BOTH REVERED *AND* ATE HORSE FLESH.
TO THOSE CURRENTLY GIVING AN INWARD “EEUW” AT THE THOUGHT, TELL ME HOW THE LIFE AND SOUL OF A HORSE IS SO DIFFERENT TO THAT OF A COW, A PIG, A GOOSE OR GOAT?
SO FREYJA WORE CATFUR LINED MITTENS, MOST OF THE NORSE PEOPLE WORE SOME KIND OF ANIMAL HIDES AND FUR FOR WARMTH AND STATUS. AS DID THE CELTS.
THESE CAME FROM MEAT LIVESTOCK ANIMALS OR HUNTED BEASTS.
(GO OUT WITH NOTHING BUT A VIKING AGE LONGBOW AND FACE DOWN A WILD BOAR. YOU’VE *EARNED* IT’S HIDE, TRUST ME...)
NOW, OF COURSE, VEGANISM RULES AND THOSE OF US WHO CONTINUE TO EAT MEAT ARE OFTEN DEMONISED, THOSE OF US WHO WEAR LEATHER, LIKEWISE, AND GODS HELP THOSE OF US WHO STILL WEAR FUR. (THAT’D BE ME, AND IT’S USUALLY FOX AND HAS BEEN TANNED FROM SCRATCH BY MY OWN SELF).
THEY SAY THAT MODERN MATERIALS MAKE FUR REDUNDANT IN COLD WEATHER NATIONS NOW. I’VE TRIED BOTH. NO THEY DON’T. FUR REMAINS NATURE’S MOST WARM MATERIAL FOR KEEPING HUMANS ALIVE IN SUB ZERO TEMPERATURES.
AND WHEN YOU’VE CREATED THAT CLOTHING FROM SCRATCH, FROM THE CULLING OF THE ANIMAL TO THE STITCHING OF THE BOOTS, TROUSERS AND PARKA, YOU EARN THE RIGHT TO WEAR IT.
I THINK FEW PEOPLE NOW WOULD EVER WEAR CAT FUR MITTENS. KNOWINGLY....
BUT I STILL STREW MY SHEEPHIDES OVER MY SOFAS AND ON THE FLOORS. I STILL TRIM MY WINTER PARKA WITH FOX FUR AND MAKE RABBIT FUR MITTENS. (SORRY FREYJA...IF I MADE CAT FUR MITTENS TODAY, I’D BE LYNCHED, PROBABLY PHYSICALLY. BUNNIES, HOWEVER, SEEM TO BE FINE. I DON’T SEE THE DIFFERENCE BUT OTHERS DO.....)
NON HEATHENS (AND MANY MODERN HEATHENS ) STATE “MODERN TECHNOLOGY” AS THE REASON WHY WE NO LONGER NEED TO PRODUCE SUCH ITEMS AS LEATHER, FUR CLOTHING OR USE ANIMAL BY PRODUCTS IN THE WAYS OUR ANCESTORS DID.
I’D LIKE TO LIST ALL THE WAY “MODERN TECHNOLOGY” HAS FUCKED UP OUR WORLD ALREADY BUT FOLKS PROBABLY WOULDN’T LISTEN.
