1.30.18 Lunchtime drawing: A tree still with some of this morning’s snow behind the masonry wall and iron fence of the tiny triangular Second Cemetery of the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue Shearith Israel (1805-29) in Greenwich Village, which was larger before West 11th Street was extended through the graveyard in 1830.

Tomorrow at 7pm I'll be speaking at Shearith Israel, the oldest Jewish Congregation in North America - dating back to 1654!! Originally, Governor Stuyvesant did not want to allow entry for the 23 Jewish refugees to New Amsterdam because of their religion. Sound familiar?? After previously fleeing the Inquisition, these Spanish/Portuguese Sephardic Jews fled Recife, Brazil when it was conquered by Portugal. Many also settled in Caribbean Islands at that time, forming the oldest Caribbean communities in the Western Hemisphere. Learn more tomorrow night at Shearith Israel 7pm - 8:30pm.
