Dr. Ra:

I look over what Tulsix was able to send me overwhelmed, I was so tired but sleeping would just bring on the Infectious nightmare and I'm forced to drug myself further to numb the worms. The worms naturally keep my body functioning so it makes me far more sicker again then if they we're working in there to keep me alive. A few days of constant work on it, visiting the babies for more blood going towards Nala (and Dathan's) poisoning. Checking on Gwen's recovery, hearing Marcellus complain though his condition wasnt as bad as everyone's else. I still had to come to his beck and call. I twitch having been caught walking down the hall to go see test results in another lab. He demanded when Caelus could be treated next. Its been a few days... I still wasnt sure.. it was..ready. I decided not to update the first machine, instead make a new machine. We might need the old machine for .. for..

I try to remember what Infection was left.. somewhere..

I felt so numbed to them now I couldn't even remember.

(Marcellus): "WHEN is Caelus going to be wok-"

(Michael): "You complain more then my granddaughter.." He tisks at Marcellus coming back from visiting Gwen.

(Marcellus): "Michael! Enough games! Where is he!?"

(Michael): "You cant visit him and get infected again you know..."

(Marcellus): "What about Nala.."

(Michael): "There is no point, both are frozen and can not speak to you."

I inch away to the door feeling like I can leave now. Michael stops me to discus the research on the baby's blood. How it seemed to be positively effecting Dathen. I almost got a complement for 'making them'. But he wont give me the credit for improvement and just betrays on about the small amount of hybrid wraith in Dathan did not prove the blood could help Nala. After seeing Marcellus's DNA structure get completely changed he questioned my methods, reminding me Nala had to be RESTORED in a complete and whole manner and not in some botched way.

"Of course sire, yes sire I understand.."

I say trying to blink away any amount of focus of me being here right now.

(Michael): "AND those names.. what we're you thinking?! UGH just get out of my sight and get back to WORK!"

I wake up from my zone out picturing dirt at his scream and dart for the other room.

Sterling came back from the Trydien sector to bitch about the lost General women, Korra being gone for so long meant there is no political puppet to dangle in front of them so he wanted to get her from Tulco but learned from Uriah she was gone.

(Sterling): "Is Gwen the only who can make her hybrid trydien race?! We need those creatures nullified if she cant then give us the Declension Serum. They are just as powerful as Bain Ones."

(Borin): "We dont know if that caused the Infection or not..its dangerous..no one is allowed to use it.."

He shoots me a look and I stand there feeling more pained at them talking about my greatest 'success' / failure.

(Sterling): "We've used it for years, it did not cause that...whats the point of holding those planets if your just going to leave us with it. Isnt your son the 'king' of Ingnitcore then why is it MY problem to keep them from ripping it apart?!"

(Borin): "I dont have the time to set Nash up there if I did I would have taken care of them far better then you can and have. Get out."

(Sterling): "I'm warning you right now, my Prince if you dont act we'll loose it...."

He leaves rather begrudgingly. I guess I cant ask his help on the job, he wont be sticking around if he has to go back there.

(Peli): "I could take Nash..."

(Borin): "No stay away from that little freak..."

He hushed back at her, much to her surprise.

He then yells at me much like Michal about how I'm not doing enough or something and another.

"Its true, I haven't been able to look at Gwen's..results as much dealing with..Caelus's recovery. But I dont see much promise with her memories. You know that."

I add in, knowing he spent all this time on it. My 2nd option wouldnt be much. Well it would be if I told him the truth.. I know that's Perry's venom. So they we're there..so close..

SO. close.

(Borin): ((I think she did it to herself, its VERY selective memory loss..too selective to be natural. OR you did it..I dont believe she could make something I cant crack...))

"And I can?" I cant mindtalk this weak.

(Borin): "I taught her what she knows!" He counters back and hovers back near Gwen who woke up gaging in pain again, hugging herself if that could help the bandages keep her together in more.

I think..what Perry did wasnt meant for her. It was way to strong. He must have loaded it for Bane.. like a nuke.

(Peli): "Its nothing, nothing your stupid father is going to shut up and let you rest.. dont wake up.. go back to sleep baby."

(Gwen): "N..no I.m...o..kay.."

I stare at her trying to make myself feel ok with withholding what I knew about that. Her insides we're probably going to liquify....

*twitch*

I take a deep yet labored breath cause my lungs without the worms keeping healthy feel like a 80 year old man who smoked his way out of a paper bag. The guilt was to much, I grab Gwen's blood samples and take it to a further away lab to try to stop the liquification. I slack off my research on Caelus's cure a few more days to accomplish this. At least the machine was being worked on, it was on a ship so it could be easily thrown into the sun just in case I also wanted the two way transfer to become a one way transfer..somewhere to be destroyed forever but I wasnt sure yet how to accomplish that. Break it into something compacted like dart yet I had a sickening sort of feeling to that for some reason. Then of course there was general transporter error.

Some day *is too drugged out and overworked to know the day of the year details* ;)

I'm on the Infected hive trying not to puke blood in my hazard suit trying to stay in attention for a meeting.

I prattle on my progress of the machine, well the hybrids building it cause I cant really do the manual labor, at least I got out of that. I was however doing the panel's myself that would be installed last by them when the time came.

(Soren): "How much gunk can you put on that one drone?"

"Oh..you'd be surprised how much..."

I couldn't remember now, how many on Xero...

He looks at me disgusted and focuses on the King trying to be very impressive.

(Soren): "Who goes in first?"

(Michael): "I will only risk Caelus's life if I must... if anyone goes in the new machine it will be Julian.."

"Will you allow me to try to break the buffer so there is no sacrifice?"

(Michael): "Do you think that's wise when this is the most important run though..if he turns out human it will be far better then any alternative."

"Of course.."

I try not to panic, I dont want to even imagine what the drone would be like with..all that.

My health decline for the last few days was now too apparent. The King ordered the only Lyratsian he had trusted, Dr. Quasar's specimen clone from the Safar Zoo to look over more calculations for Julian strain machine. Since whatever he did to himself to have infection full control must have went over my head and been some Lysterian secret.

(Quasar): "I am SO honored for another chance your majesty."

(Michal): "Just get on with it.." He shoos her away and I would have liked to see such a famous scientist at work checking the machine but .. passes out smacking into wall on the way down.

I apologize for how long this one is! I wanted to get these two out of the way and I guess I didn’t think it through so we got a two in one deal for this one. Also, I’m not entirely satisfied with how they look so I may update their colorings sometime. 

One more after this and I swear I’m done giving Koba siblings/family members! XD

Personality:

Despite the abuse and torture his family members endured from humans, Gavin is an optimistic ape with a more positive view on life. While he is aware of and acknowledges the pain humans can cause, he refuses to believe all humans are bad-unlike his older brothers. 

Though Gavin is part of the Ape Army, it’s more than obvious he doesn’t belong in it as he is often hesitant about harming or killing anyone, even elks. Due to this passive nature, he is seen as weak and soft to his fellow ape soldiers. What they don’t understand (or perhaps, refuse to) is that Gavin simply doesn’t want to kill or end conflict with death and believes there are better ways to do so. 

This, of course, would draw a wedge between him and his father and brothers who hate all humans. In Dawn, Gavin sides with Caesar. Agreeing that Malcolm and his group aren’t dangerous. Much to the dislike of his father and brothers. 

When Caesar was supposedly killed by the humans, Gavin is horrified at the prospect that the humans may have been bad all along and become enraged, joining his two brothers in the battle in the city. His anger is, however, short lived when he finds out that Koba had killed Ash (though he and Ash and Blue Eyes were not particularly friends, he still respected them and saw them as good apes). 

Ash’s death causes Gavin to reevaluate his older brother and realize how far he was willing to go for revenge-revenge that, Gavin believed, had more to do with Koba and was never really about Caesar’s ‘death’ at all.

Once he finds out the truth, Gavin has an identity crises. Not only had he killed, an action that went against everything he believed in, but he had killed for nothing. This causes him to become depressed and deeply resent Koba, and even Carlos who, as he believed, knew what Koba was capable of and let it happen.

His relationship with his remaining siblings suffers as well. With Nemo being refusing to discus the situation at all and Gavin blaming Dolly for it all as he believes that, as the oldest and the older twin and “the only responsible one in the family”, she should have seen it before anyone else did. Rose is the only one he doesn’t fight with, but does resent her for her being too young and too innocent to understand what has happened. 

Obviously in Revelations, he is completely against Grey and Red’s schemes and makes it very clear he wants nothing to do with Koba’s followers or anything relating to what his brother had done. However, he is dragged into it by coincidence as he is one of the soldiers to bring the females and children back into the forest and is later tied up.

After Red and the rest of Koba’s Loyalists are chased out, Gavin is reunited with his siblings and realizes that Nemo, despite going along with Red’s plan, never agreed to killing the guard apes and had never believed Koba was better as a leader than Caesar. 

Due to Nemo being conflicted on where he stood on the matter and feeling like he just didn’t belong anymore, he leaves the colony. Leaving Gavin with only his sisters left. 

In War, due to the constant fighting and death, Gavin is forced to give up his beliefs and dislike of killing and becomes a stronger and better fighter-though it comes at a price, as he feels he no longer knows who is anymore and focuses only on keeping his sisters safe. 

After the killings of Cornelia and Blue Eyes, he goes off with the colony to their new home-only to be found and taken prisoner by the AO army instead. He is forced into work along with Dolly and the other apes while Rose is separated from them. Though he is disappointed in Caesar and outwardly shows it upon his return, he does forgive him and changes his mind after he convinces the Colonel to feed the apes. 

During the escape, Gavin protects as many apes as he could. He gets shot twice but survives and reunites with his sisters after the avalanche and later joins to their new home.

In the end, Gavin is no longer the passive and hesitant ape he used to be but becomes a strong and self-assured ape. He still believes killing doesn’t have to be the way but now recognizes and accepts that sometimes, it’s not a matter of what’s right an wrong. Only what’s necessary.

If this were a real life person, what would they be doing right now?: Hmm, I kinda feel like Gavin would be one of those bookworm, nature loving type of person. Despite having damaged and war-wanting family members, he knows he’s not a tough guy and doesn’t try to be and chooses to focus on the beauty that lives in the world rather than dwell on the icky and dark side of it.

Personality:

Nemo can be described as cold, bitter and quick tempered. Out of all of Carlos’ children, he is the most reserved. He never shares what he’s thinking and when asked, he can come off as condescending. One thing that he does make clear though, is his hatred of humans which he shares with Koba and their father. 

As a soldier to the Ape Army, Nemo is a skilled fighter and is well liked by his fellow ape soldiers-contrary to Gavin. When in battle with a human, he would grab their arms and bend them unnaturally to break the bones. 

In Dawn, after the encounter with Malcolm’s group in the woods, Nemo doesn’t say one way or the other if he believes they are dangerous but does agree that they can’t be trusted and that the colony ‘must show strength’ as Koba put it.

Later, when Malcolm convinces Caesar to let him and the others work on the dam, Nemo is one of the apes assigned to first watch the construction (or guard the humans) and then to assist in clearing the dam out. The whole time he’s at the dam, he glares at any human who’d dare meet his eye however, he does try to intervene when Koba verbally attacks Caesar and then follows him after the fight between the two. Confronting himont what he just did, saying: “I don’t like this anymore than you do, but Caesar is not the enemy.”

Nemo, despite not liking Caesar’s rule and resenting him for the battle between him and his brother, did not take part in or had any knowledge of Koba’s plan to kill him. When Caesar is supposedly killed by the humans, he immediately joins his brother in attacking the human city. Though Nemo kills many humans himself, he is taken by surprise at his brother’s apparent enjoyment at the battle. He hides it well, but like Ash and Blue Eyes, becomes concerned about his brother’s behavior. 

It is, sadly, only after Ash’s death that Nemo realizes the monster Koba was. Nemo may have also hated humans but, in his eyes, “Koba took it too far.” He decides to confront their father, Carlos, in hopes that maybe he can talk some sense into his brother-only to realize in dismay that his father is on Koba’s side. 

Nemo didn’t believe his brother and father would harm him or Gavin, Dolly and Rose but at that point, he wasn’t sure if he knew them at all anymore. Believing that if Koba had no qualms with killing Ash, he could likely kill his brothers and sisters too. With Carlos supporting it.

When Caesar kills Koba, Nemo is angry at everything. Angry at his brother for causing a war, angry at his father for supporting it, and angry at Caesar for killing Koba. It doesn’t help that Caesar acts cold towards Nemo, as he doesn’t know if he can trust him anymore. 

Much like he did with Grey, Red see’s this as an opportunity to enlist Nemo for his plan. Believing that, out of all of Koba’s siblings, he would be the most likely to join Koba’s Loyalists. Nemo, still believing Caesar’s sympathy for humans makes him weak and out of spite, agrees to join them on the grounds that the colony would be safer somewhere else. 

However, much to the surprise of Red, Grey and the rest of Koba’s followers, Nemo makes it very clear that he does not believe his brother a ‘better king’ than Caesar by saying: “I saw him kill Ash. What kind of king kills his own people?”.

Although Nemo did not understand the full extent of Red’s plan, he did catch on that Red was the one pulling the strings and that he was keeping certain details from him. He, however, did not realize that Grey and Winter were tangled up in it as well. 

He realizes he was wrong to join the followers when Red and Koba’s Loyalists hold the colony hostage and kill several guarding apes-forcing Nemo to participate in the take over. Nemo, believing he and his siblings could be next in the crosshairs, does what he is told without expression. Focusing more on survival than anything else. 

When he overhears a conversation between Red and Winter about killing Cornelia, he decides he’s had enough of his brother’s followers and leaves. Only to reappear when Red tries to kill Cornelia himself. 

While Grey and Red fight, Nemo frees any and all apes that are tied up and is one of the apes to chase out Koba’s Loyalists. Making him a traitor in their eyes and in the eyes of his father. Though Nemo is redeemed, he now see’s Koba’s madness everywhere. In the apes who follow him and it effecting the remainder of the colony. 

Due to his connection to Koba, him being one of his followers and him still not liking Caesar’s rule, Nemo decides he no longer belongs in the colony. Feeling that, as long he is part of the colony, he will never be able to escape his older brother’s shadow and that there would always be dislike and distrust between him and Caesar. Therefor, instead of staying, he chose to leave.  Hoping he can start a new life somewhere else and leave the betrayal and memory of his brother and father behind him. 

In making this choice, he leaves Dolly, Gavin and Rose behind as they refused to leave. Though Nemo knew his siblings would be safe, it is a bitter pill as he knows there is a chance he may never see them again.

If this were a real life person, what would they be doing right now?: I can honestly, 100%, say that Nemo would be that silent guy who sits in class and never talks but will beat the living crap out of anyone who pisses him off. Regardless of the consequences that may come from it.

Some Extra Notes:

Both Nemo and Gavin are inspired by my cats: Nemo was named after my eldest cat and shares the same characteristics as him while Gavin was inspired by a cat I had when I was younger (that cat’s name was Gizmo. I would have named him after that cat but because ‘Nemo’ and ‘Gizmo’ are so twin-sounding I just named him ‘Gavin’ instead. I still think ‘Gizmo’ might be a good name for the Planet of The Apes universe though). 

Part of Nemo’s character is similar to S Snape from Harry Potter: It’s hard to tell if he’s your enemy or an ally. 

In Before The Storm, Gavin and Nemo are Donkeys and have been serving the AO Army since they were young children. Having been kidnapped by them when Nemo was six and Gavin only one. 

Both are half brothers and have different mothers (in both RP’s and in Before The Storm, it can be assumed Nemo’s mother was killed by humans while Gavin’s died in childbirth). 

Gavin and Nemo both have scars in Before The Storm and AO brandings however, in role-play-verses, Gavin would likely not have any scars. 

Nemo’s fate is open for debate in role-plays. Meaning, he could have either survived the war and found a new home or colony, or he could have been killed (by soldiers or by something else).

It is very likely the only members of Koba’s family to survive and remain in the colony would be Dolly, Gavin and Rose. 

Out of all the sibling OC’s, Nemo is the most similar to Koba: Both hate humans and can and/or will kill them if given reason to however, Nemo will only kill a human if it is necessary and would not take it to the extreme that Koba did. Nemo would also only kill a human who had harmed other apes (in present events) whereas Koba kills out of revenge (out of past events). Most of all though, both see Caesar’s compassion for humans as a sign of weakness and dislike his rule (though I think that’s more Nemo than Koba).

Ch. 24 - One Last Dance

"It's stuck! We can't get out and the steam is filling up the room fast!" "Harmful steam?" "Well it's certainly not playful Steam!!" "Oh Shut up, Mary! Do you want to get out of here or not?!" "MY NAME IS VANDERWOOD! Stop trying to be buddy-buddy with her and help me pry this door open!" "It's not going to open from in here!" Vanderwood was desperately trying to get any grip on the large metal door that he could while Seven was trying his best to work through the steam and find any other options. "How about both of you shut up, and one of you give me your location!" "North East section, in the 3rd hanger, 4 units down and on the right!" "Wow...you think you two would be a better team if you're that in sync." "Just hurry!" The station went silent as the two men continued to look for an escape route just in case their third party couldn't make it to them on time. She was running faster than she had run in quite some time. Her breath's were even and sweat was rolling down her neck. Her long hair was tucked up in a plain black baseball cap. "I can't get a grip on anything! The steam is too hot! Seven any other options?" "Yeah, the door being opened from the outside!" She tried to pick up the pace, but the next turn she was supposed to take came up and she could see the shadows of people that clearly were the enemy. She tried to turn on her heel but the rate at which she tried to stop had forced her flat on her ass. She shuffled backwards furiously and then got up to once again run at top speed but in another direction. "Listen! I'm a single person trying to avoid a large wave of people looking for intruders. Of which I am one. And I am trying to avoid them while making my way to the idiots that alerted them of intruders. Idiots that set off a trip wire, LIKE THIS WAS THE FIRST MISSION THEY'D EVER BEEN ON."   She ducked into an archway where a small drinking fountain was kept. She removed her backpack and took out four small discus shaped devices. "Seven, how do these little UFO things work?" "Oh! My gadgets. Ho~Ho~! They'll divert sound. Well I mean technically they will pick up your sound and transfer it somewhere else. Don't ask how it works. Unless you're a big genius boy like me, you won't understand." "JUST TELL HER WHAT TO DO WITH THEM, IDIOT!" "OKAY! Just attach them to a wall or, preferably the ceiling so the go unnoticed. Keep one with you. Turn that one clockwise until the LED strip is red. The others, it doesn't matter what color. The different colors just mean different sounds they put out. It doesn't exactly mute any sound you make it just kind of, pads it, and then lets it out elsewhere. So if you stomp around, it won't sound like stomps, just maybe light footsteps? And then wherever you put the other ones it will expel that sound in the hopes to distract or divert the enemy." "Can I throw them?" "They should withstand a simple toss. They're magnetic so no worries about stickage." "That's not a word and wait...'in the hopes to' meaning, YOU HAVEN'T TESTED THEM?!" "Listen Mary, with all the chores you give me, I didn't have time." "Oh you pea brained little-!" "Stuff it, Vanderwood! Lay off! Let's just hope they work and I didn't just waste precious getaway time." She turned one of the disks to red, just like Seven said and sprinted in a new direction. Making sure to spread them well enough apart, she tossed the three others up on the ceiling one by one. Several long strides later and she arrived at the door. She knocked with the outer part of her fist. "I'm looking for a couple of Morons, would that be who is occupying this room?" "JUST OPEN THE DOOR!" "Wow, again. You two really need to take this act on the road." She looked for a lever, a handle, a latch, something to open the door. "You have got to be kidding me? What kind of old-timey steamboat shit is this?" "What do you see?" "It's a turn wheel! Like you would steer a ship with but..." She gripped the handles and pushed using all of her body weight. "It won't move!" "Well from in here it looks like an automatic door that obviously shuts off when an alarm goes off." "Thanks, Seven. I'm sure that information really helps her." "Just shut up! I can't move it!" She went from pushing to pulling, planting her legs firmly and trying to use them as anchoring leverage. "I have to break it loose." She knew she needed to put every bit of her body weight into it. She looked above her head and saw some exposed piping. She stepped on the turning wheel and hoisted herself up to the pipe. She grabbed onto it in a pull up motion and firmly placed both her feet on separate wheel grips. Putting all of her weight down on her feet and pushing the grips forward, she held her breath and tried to focus all of her energy. Feeling the wheel slowly start to move she stopped pushing. Swinging back and forth on the pipe she was gripping she built momentum and in one swoop coming forward, she kicked the wheel and released the pipe. The wheel snapped out of it's locked position and rapidly spun while the door started to pry open. She laid on the floor catching her breath, when the two men that were trapped inside swooped her up by the pits of her arms and ran with her dragging behind. The three sat on the dock. Seven untying the boat, and Vanderwood inside of the boat, making sure the package they had retrieved was tucked away, safe.   "You guys are unbelievable. I have to be on a plane in 30 minutes!" "No one said you had to tag along on our missions." "Yeah, it's not our fault you miss the action since you've gone on the straight and narrow path." "Quit bitchin. What if I wasn't here?" "...we would have figured it out." "Okay, Seven. You keep telling yourself that. I need to make a phone call." She walked further up the dock and took out her cellphone, pacing back and forth waiting for the call to be connected. "Welp! Mission Accomplished!" Seven spoke in high spirits as he jumped in the boat. "Better take off soon!" "And you really think whatever we just collected will help you find your brother?" Vanderwood nodded to where he stored the back pack. "I truly think so." "You better hope it helps a little, or that one is going to be pissed." Again Vanderwood nodded toward up the dock where their third party member could no longer be seen. Suddenly bright spotlights, large in diameter started to whirl around outside of the fortress they just left. Alarms  were ringing at eardrum shattering levels. "START THE BOAT!" She was running back up the dock towards the boat signalling them to pull away from the dock. Vanderwood fired up the engine and started to drive away. She would either jump in or swim a short distance for them to throw something to her. Seven was getting the rope prepared to throw out when a bullet flew by his head and hit the exterior of the boat. "SNIPERS!" Seven yelled as he hit the deck and Vanderwood ducked as much as he could while still trying to navigate the boat. She reached the end of the dock, all of her weight pushing down so she could spring herself off of the deck and into the water. More shots rang out. "AAHHH!" "SAMANTHA!" The bullet just grazed her ankle but it threw her off balance, she slipped off the dock, into the water. She immediately tried to just start swimming, but she felt a tug on her skull. "What are you doing?!" "My hair! It's stuck!" Her long ginger hair had fallen out of it's baseball cap and was now tangled in the splintering wood and loose nails holding up the old rickety dock. "Just pull it off of there and swim! It's just hair!" "It won't come out!!" Sam grabbed onto her hair and tugged and tugged but her hair would come loose from the dock, her skull, or break apart. Seven looked around the boat desperately for something to use and grabbed the first thing he knew would work. He dove into the water and swam to the dock. Vanderwood killed the engine and turned off the lights in hopes that they wouldn't be visible for just even a split second to buy them some time. "Samantha!" Seven reached her and tried to pull on her hair but came up with the same results. "Okay, Sam, we're gonna have to burn it off..." "I don't care!" She was obviously in pain and if she could just rip her hair off like a wig she could. movies watched in 2018

kimi no na wa - why am i the only person who thought this movie was just okay???  i see where the people who loved it are coming from, i just...didn’t.  gorgeous though, i’ll give it that.

darkest hour - my mother considers churchill to be one of the most heroic figures of her lifetime, and she felt positively about this movie.  that’s good enough for me.  (also, that one fucking SHOT of this movie was better than the entirety of the actual film about dunkirk.  you know the one i mean.  and the scene in the underground, holy shit, did i cry.)

thoroughbreds - i would have declared it perfect if it had ended about ten minutes earlier than it did.  i fucking hate epilogues.  still, two of the fastest rising stars in horror sharing the screen was as awesome as you’d think (though this is more of a thriller i suppose).  also i’m the only person who’s annoyed by this, i’m sure, but olivia cooke’s bedroom was CLEARLY IN ANYA TAYLOR-JOY’S HOUSE.  that bedroom was clearly part of that house.  details bug me sometimes.  what can i say?  and i mean if the house hadn’t been so goddamn perfect a setting for this film i wouldn’t have noticed,  so...

daddy’s home 2 - god help me, but i found this sort of cute.  never saw the first one and don’t plan to, but somehow found myself watching and vaguely enjoying this one.  plus i love that my mother now asks “was she a matilda?” every time a girl in the 9-13 age range shows up in a movie.  i’m counting the days until we can rent hereditary so i can finally say “yes, actually.”  (i swear to god if that’s the one time she doesn’t ask that i will scream.  as an aside, the trailers for that look REALLY good.  i’m so glad milly finally got to do a horror movie, and i’m doubly glad that it looks like it might be a good one, because obviously i’ll be seeing that in theaters.)

three billboards outside ebbing, missouri - it was okay.  that’s really the extent of my feelings about it. frances mcdormand’s performance is one for the books, and woody harrelson’s is noteworthy as well.  and peter dinklage is always good...and i don’t think i’ve seen samara weaving in anything before, but she did so much with such a tiny role in this...the acting is overall stellar, is where i’m going here.  and the soundtrack is great.  (not JUST because i have soft spots for renee fleming and the joan baez version of ‘the night they drove old dixie down’, but it helps.)  but good god am i uncomfortable with the “racist asshole is actually a good guy despite still being super racist, as written by a white guy” trope.  and i thought sam rockwell’s performance was pretty lukewarm.  i see why people felt so positively about it, but i didn’t like it that much.  it had its moments.  but again, having a hard time moving past sam rockwell’s character.  

growing up smith - maybe this time i’m the racist, but the indian-american (or indian-englishman in the case of bend it like beckham) fish out of water movies always, always, always charm the fuck out of me.  this one is fairly weak on its own merit - lots of cliches - but it’s just likeable. i’d also love to know if the screenwriter based any aspects of the dad character on his own dad, or smith on himself, since the film is set in around the time he would’ve grown up.  

all i see is you - literally, and i’m using the word correctly here, the most disturbing fictional film i’ve ever seen in my life.  holy shit.  it’s literally - again, really! - the most horrific scenario i can envision (pun not intended but i wish it had been).  blake lively has come a long way since she played bridget vreeland and serena van der woodsen, and she really impressed me here.  indeed, if she hadn’t been so easy to like, the movie might not have worked so well, but i did genuinely care about her character.  (that fish tank bothered me, though.  again, i know, details, but...discus would be dead in zero seconds flat in that type of environment.)  the ending felt a bit like the screenwriter realized they’d forgotten to write an ending, though.  As a film it’s not that great, but the premise is so goddamn chilling and blakely lively is so easy to care about that it’s really stuck with me.

eddie the eagle - one of the things i’m looking forward to the most about getting older is anticipating which events that have occurred during my lifetime are going to be the ones that “stick.”  i can’t wait to (god willing) be able to sit through a movie about something i lived through and be able to go on about my memories of those events and see how the fictionalized account pairs up with what i remember.  it’s one of the things i’m looking forward to the most about seeing i tonya, actually.  there have been a few things that fit that category so far (diana, the people v. oj simpson, dubya), but nothing that feels *personal* yet, if that makes any sense (which i AM anticipating from i tonya).  all of this to say, this movie is saccharine and full of cliches but it’s kind of awesome that this guy’s story is something that stuck.  it’s not that good, but it’s obvious how much effort went into it, and if i had a kid who was into sports or other competitive activities, i’d probably suggest they watch this.  it felt a LOT like cool runnings to me, and it’s probably just as “true to life” - which is to say, not terribly - and i think it’s set during the same winter olympics, come to think of it.  

flower - i had some problems with it, but it’s SUCH an easy movie to LIKE, i can’t find the energy to complain too much.  there are some structural problems; for a dark comedy there isn’t quite a lot of comedy; there are a few plot threads that could either have been filled out more or dropped entirely; zoey deutch and her “teen” friends have deeper facial lines than i do (one of them honest to god looks forty, and i’ll give zoey deutch a pass because she owns this role, but the other two could easily have been cast with more convincingly young actors); but goddammit, i just LIKED this movie.  i long suspected that zoey deutch was too good for dreck like why him? (i like that movie, but it’s not good) and before i fall, and she proved me so right.  her performance is gorgeous.  adam scott and the guy playing her stepbrother (i don’t know his name) are perfectly cast.  the story is delightfully weird and i never had any goddamn idea where anything was going.  and the adorable pet rat doesn’t die horribly.  if the plot summary or trailer appeal to you, i think you’ll like it.  if not, i doubt you will.  but it’s exactly my cup of tea.

the killing of a sacred deer - i don’t like this director at all.  i’ve tried so hard, but i don’t.  this movie is more of the same from him.  if you’ve liked his past work, you’ll like this.  if you’re not a fan, this won’t convert you.

First of all, I am an AdultTM and as such I am permitted to set by own Bed Time. There are many reasons why you might receive notifications from me so ‘early’.

I have a blog post on queue every morning between 5am and 6am my time (so probably 3am and 4am your time). It goes up automatically, so I can see initial responses before I go to work.

I think Patreon sends its emails at the same time each day, regardless of when I post. I certainly don’t type there early in the morning.

Sometimes I’m on nightshift and can get kinda bored at 3am sometimes.

Sometimes I just can’t sleep, especially with the changing day/night cycles.

Most of the blog runs on queue, honestly. At least three posts a day do.

If you an reinforce the behaviour by arranging frequent, short visits to the vet clinic where nothing happens but lots of treats, she may start to associate the vet clinic with positive things (food) ad no scary things. This might make the rest ofher life easier.

I would like to suggest that any surgery on a rat is likely to be not simple, because they do have particular anesthetic requirements that can make their recovery difficult. Also that a lot of traditional rat medicine hinges on using post mortem examination as a diagnostic tool, which is not useful at all with pet rats.

In dog and cat medicine most of our equipment and even medications are not suitable for rats, or very difficult to adapt. We simply have fewer options, and generally less experience with these species Most vets I know will attempt to treat them, but with a great big disclaimer saying I don’t do this often, and a quick question as to whether you’d prefer to go to a nearby clinic that does see rats more often.

She is probably not going to have any long term personality changes from being desexed, though might be out of sorts for a few days after the anaesthetic. If anything they tend to be less stressed because they’re not attracting Toms.

We send our patients home with aftercare instructions. We have a default one that we print for routine surgery like desexing, and a customized one for non-routine procedures.

We also read it out to our clients when they pick up their pet, and point out that all these instructions are written down, because it’s easy to forget details when you’re worried.

Novel protein diets, and ideally single proteins source diets, are more use for allergies than just going ‘grain free’.

‘Grain Free’ labelling on food particularly vexes me because it’s not regulated. You can find ‘grain free’ food that really mean ‘corn free’ and either use grain byproducts or straight up use rice. Last time I checked, rice was a grain.

It’s like ‘Hollistic’ - it means nothing on a pet food label. Neither does ‘Organic’, pet food companies do not have to use all organic products in pet food to label the food as organic. These are marketing ploys like ‘all natural’ which are targeting your emotions and don’t mean anything when it comes to the food.

If you’ve come across a novel protein diet, or a minimum ingredient diet, that is beneficial for your cats then stick with it. But recognise what’s marketing and what’s useful.

You might also want to consider something like a halti collar, which pulls the dog’s nose downwards to their chest when they pull, instead of something that goes around the neck.

No. And here’s the thing- all modern dog breeds are equally distant from their wolf-like ancestor, unless they have been recently mixed with wolves again.

Their health problems are different to those dogs with more extreme anatomy, but dogs that look like wolves are not inherently healthier.

This is called line breeding, where the offspring of a ‘perfect’ individual are repeatedly bred back to the same individual generation upon generation to try to recreate it. All you really do is lose genetic diversity very quickly and allow recessive deleterious genes to proliferate in the population.

This is why just about everywhere else that’s not the purebred pet world, this is considered a bad thing to do.

But I’d love to know what harm was being done by CDC employees answering ‘the most basic of data requests.’'

Thus CDC officials now seem to want to substitute public relations for straightforward information provision.  Given that the mission of CDC is public health, this seems to be an example of mission-hostile management, a concept we have used most often to refer to the management of private health care organizations, not US government agencies.  Charles Ornstein of ProPublica commented

This is genuinely disturbing. The idea that someone at CDC headquarters needs to sign off on responses to basic data requests shows a level of media control beyond which I have ever seen. What’s next?

At Health Care Renewal, we have often discussed the anechoic effect, a taboo against public discussion of many aspects of health care dysfunction, particularly those that might discomfit people who are personally profiting from the current system.  In particular, the currently dysfunctional health care system has made the leaders of big health organizations, particularly for-profit corporations,  hugely wealthy.  Furthermore, big health care organizations have been eager to develop financial relationships with health care professionals, academics, leaders of non-profit organizations and NGOs, etc, leading to a web of conflicts of interest draped over health care.  Who wants to speak out when doing so may offend not only distant CEOs, but also one's colleagues, bosses, friends, relatives etc who may have financial ties to those CEOs' corporations?  Furthermore, who wants to speak out when large corporations command huge marketing and public relations operations that can be used to drown out unwanted ideas, and legal departments ready to threaten litigation? Now government health care officials seem to be enlarging their own public relations efforts while shutting off access of honest information.  This will only make open discussion of the true causes of health care dysfunction more difficult.  Even more chilling is the threat that health care officials now may be attempting actual censorship.  We have depended on health care journalists to root out bad behaviors that lead to health care dysfunction, and by doing break taboos about discussion such behaviors.  Up to now we have assumed at least that government would not make it harder for journalists to do their job, protected by the Bill of Rights protections of free speech and a free press.  But now the current administration seems to be taking the side of censorship. From Censoship to Incitement of Violence? Even worse, some worry that the regime's hostility to journalists  threatens their actual harm.  In early September, the New York Times reported on comments by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who

was reacting to Mr. Trump’s recent comments at a rally in Phoenix during which he spoke of 'crooked media deceptions' in reports of the violent clashes at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., that resulted in the death of a counterprotester. In Phoenix, the president’s words also appeared to whip up audience hostility toward journalists. The failing @nytimes writes false story after false story about me. They don't even call to verify the facts of a story. A Fake News Joke! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 28, 2017 'It’s really quite amazing when you think that freedom of the press, not only a cornerstone of the Constitution but very much something the United States defended over the years, is now itself under attack from the president himself,' [UN official] Mr. al-Hussein said. 'It’s a stunning turnaround.'

Furthermore,

'To call these news organizations fake does tremendous damage,' Mr. al-Hussein added. 'I believe it could amount to incitement. At an enormous rally, referring to journalists as very, very bad people — you don’t have to stretch the imagination to see then what could happen to journalists.'

Ominously, the response from the White House included more unsubstantiated charges of "false narratives," and threatened media tha fails to be responsible as judged by the regime, never mind the First Amendment and its promise of free speech and a free press. 

the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said in an emailed statement, 'We believe in free press and think it is an important part of our democracy, but the press also has a big responsibility to the American people to be truthful. Their job is to report the news, not create it. 'Is it not ‘dangerous’ for the media,' she continued, 'to create false narratives and overzealous attacks against the president that the American people chose to be their leader? The president is focused on growing our economy, creating jobs, securing our border and protecting Americans. Since those are also the priorities of most Americans, hopefully the media will make covering them theirs.'

Strong, even overzealous verbal and written attacks on politicians, the president included, have been essential parts of American democracy since the Bill of Rights was ratified.  The First Amendment shows that our political system values such boisterous discourse.  The White House press secretary thus threatened not only the press but the fundamental US system of government.   Strategic Hostility Finally, there is an argument that the regime's attacks on the media may not be just reckless, but  strategic and calculated.  The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right of freedom of opinion and expression, Prof David Kaye of University of California - Irvine School of Law, wrote,

The President’s attacks may be reckless – who knows whether someone in his audience will take the President’s word as license to take action against enemies of the American people? – but they are not without purpose. They have concrete aims: to intimidate reporters into certain kinds of coverage, or clarify for his favored outlets what coverage he desires, or plant the seeds of doubt about news stories (such as the Russia investigation led by Robert Mueller).

However, when we tie together the jeremiads and rhetoric with what the Trump administration is doing in other governing spaces, the practice of attacking the press becomes clearer as policy than solely reckless rant. First, the attack on the press is not merely rhetorical; it is increasingly reflected in policy.

And,

Second, Trump’s incendiary statements work in tandem with a pattern of lying and disinformation, both aiming to limit the accessibility of truthful information. 

And,

Third, the administration operates as if it has something to hide.

Who knows what they might be hiding.  But there certainly have been plenty of accusations of  severe conflicts of interest and corruption affecting the Trump presidency? Summary Up to last year, I was cautiously optimistic that the anechoic effect was starting to erode, enabling the health care discussion to begin to encompass the deeper causes of health care dysfunction.  Since November, however, we seem to be going backward.  What little openness and transparency that were developing are at risk of sinking under a new tide of propaganda and censorship.  My concerns have primarily been about health care and health care dysfunction, but the larger trends threaten our whole society and the ability of the US to maintain itself as a republic.  Ben Franklin's warning becomes more acute.  What we have is only 

A republic if you can keep it.
