Zetsubou Woeâs: Part 1
*In another section of the lab, Monotaro and Monophanie boot up the call to Zetsubouâs headquarters.
O-Ok Monophanie...You tell Shirogane that we failed to kill Akamatsu with the Exisalâs, and Iâll tell her that Monodam betrayed us and is working with her now.
Whoâs gonna tell her that Monosuke was killed by her and that Monokidâs Exisal has been compromised...!?
Uuuuuh...I dunno...Scissors Paper Rock for it?
How are we going to do that!? We donât have fingers!
Ugh! Itâs starting!
What is it? Whatever news youâve brought forward had better be good.
Uh...well...
*One explanation later.
You WHAT!?
L-Like we said...! We thought Monodam had killed Akamatsu, but then he apparently started speaking against Zetsubouâs ideals, so Monosuke was forced to shut him down!
But Akamatsu saved him, and now Monodam is fighting on her side! The AI sheâs with also compromised Monokidâs Exisal, so now sheâs got two Exisalâs and her super spear, against just the two of us!
AI huh? I think they might be referring to Sora on that one.
Sora, huh? Thatâs a name I havenât heard in a long time.
*The other members of Organization Zetsubou actually sit with Tsumugi as she talks to the Monokubs, sans Celeste, Nagito and Mikihiko.
Ugh! MORONS! Why did I ever think I could rely on you for any of this!
Weâre trying our best! But she keeps on outsmarting us every time!
Yeah, like thatâs difficult! You know what!?
That thing I said about letting you all out if you kill her!? FORGET IT! I hope you both get SLAUGHTERED!
*Shirogane angrily ends the call.
...!?
No...!
...
That was pretty harsh, Mugi-chan.
Hey...Itâs not like itâs any great loss to us, right?
Honestly, from my perspective, it looks to me like you never planned on letting the Monokubs leave the lab in the first place.
...What gave it away?
If nothing else, your reaction just now. So I was right?
Sort of. I did plan on taking them out, but...I was going to repurpose them a little. But now I donât think Iâll bother. No amount of refurbishment can rescue that level of ineptitude.
Hey, at least we can finally move on from this. Maybe we should send down a strike force to take care of the Future Foundation outside.
Ahem...Iâm sorry...Who said anything about us moving on?
Eh?
Kaede Akamatsu is still alive in that lab. And because of that, weâre not finished yet.
This may be our one and only opportunity to eliminate her before things spiral out of control.
Mugi-chan, why are you so hung up on this!? Is it THAT essential to you that we kill this one girl over ANYONE ELSE the Future Foundation has?
I mean...Itâs not as if thereâs not rhyme or reason behind it, right? Akamatsuâs clearly strong enough to take down an Exisal, and the whole point of those was to be undefeatable death mechs.
Itâs enough to get ME pumped up, so give both her and Mugimu a little bit of credit, Yukari!
Narumiâs battle-hungry antics aside, I gotta agree. The problem isnât that Akamatsu isnât a threat, because sheâs proven that she very much is.
Itâs just...she seems to be a relatively minor one compared to the likes of Sakura Ogami, Hajime Hinata and Kuripa Kurafto, which weâve also had to contend with. And yet right now, she seems to be everybodyâs priority.
Correction: Sheâs not everybodyâs priority. But she automatically becomes everyoneâs focus because sheâs solely Shiroganeâs priority.
Yeah...thanks for that clarification...Not that we needed it.
What do you even plan to do, Tsumugi? If the Kubs are a bust, are you just gonna drop a ton of Monokumaâs on the lab and call it a day?
âA Ton of Monokumaâsâ in terms of power, are equivalent to that of one Exisal. Akamatsu has already proven sheâs capable of taking them down, AND she has two at her disposal. It wonât be of much use.
So whatâs the plan?
The plan is Iâm going to send someone I ACTUALLY can trust into the lab to eliminate her and her little battalion sheâs got accompanying her, not to mention Iâll have to slaughter that traitorous Monokub too.
Who did you have in mind?
Actually, Ms Otonokoji. I was thinking of you.
*Kanade stops fiddling with her guitar pick and looks up.
What...!?
Itâs not like youâve had a lot to do lately. I donât think you can overpower Kaede, but youâre definitely nimble and cunning enough to outmaneuver and outsmart her and her companions.
Plus, wouldnât it be nice to see your old friend Sora again?
I get what youâre saying...but even so, Iâll pass.
Hey! You were given an order! Thereâs no âpassingâ on that!
And Iâve chosen to refuse that order. Need I remind you that this relationship that we have is purely give and take, Zetsubou?
*Kanade shifts so she sits more comfortably and smugly in her seat.
Iâm on your side and will do whatever you want provided itâs within reason, and then in the end, I expect you to give me what you offered. But given that your personal grudge against one girl is a ridiculous waste of my time, I think Iâll pass.
...
Mugimu, just drop it. Sheâs clearly not interested-
My apologies Otonokoji-san. I think I may have led into this conversation the wrong way.
Like you said, our relationship is give and take. So what if I was to give you the best thing you could possibly take?
Huh?
The thing that you desire most...What we offered to you upon your resurrection...Itâs IN that lab, WITH Akamatsu.
!!!??
*Kanade drops the cool act, lurching to her feet and glaring wide-eyed, bared-fangs at Shirogane.
Wh-What did you say!?
Mugi-chan!? A-Are you sure you want to-!?
Why do you think I havenât just shot an atomic missile at that lab and called it a day? Aside from the fact that thereâs Killing Game Targets within the vicinity, the bargaining chip we in Zetsubou have for you is in that lab, and has been all this time.
Go in there, and kill Kaede Akamatsu...Kill both the treacherous Kub and the shitty little AI...and itâs all yours.
You...had better not...be lying to me...!
I wouldnât bullcrap you when it comes to something like this.
So you donât intend to let the Kub live? You seem to deal with traitors very seriously.
Uchui! Oh, Iâm sorry, I forgot you were here.
If I could, I would torture him before I kill him, but itâs best for us to just get him out of the way.
Iâd say you have your priorities on straight, but...I think all of us in this room can conclusively agree that you donât.
*Tsumugi turns to Uchui.
Iâm sorry, what did you say?
Forgive me for speaking out of turn, but I want you to know this. It may come to a point where you can either kill Akamatsu, or host your penultimate Killing Game. And you might not be able to do both, so what would you do in that situation.
Your Killing Game has been your main plan this whole time. Would you sacrifice all of it, just for the sake of this vengeance you seem to be seeking?
...
Mugi-chan, he has a point. Answer me this. Whatâs more important to you?
Kaede Akamatsuâs death, or making your dream Killing Game come true?
Akamatsuâs death. No question.
!!!??
Woah! Didnât see THAT coming.
What the fresh hell...!?
Mugimu!?
No hesitation...!
!!!??
*Tsumugi gets up, and starts to leave the room.
Iâve given you what you want. For now, this little gathering is adjourned.
I need to...think...
*Tsumugi exaunts.
What the actual hell was that about...?
Is...Is she serious? Sheâs going to throw it all away, sacrificing what could be her grand master plan and everything sheâs built up...JUST to kill ONE GIRL!?
You Zetsubou fools confuse the hell out of me. More than once now, youâve talked about your ideas of grandeur, and how youâre going to change the world together.
And yet most of you always do shit that interferes with those ideas, because it suits your own personal interests. At least Future Foundation are committed!Â
I mean...everyone expects that from me and Akira, but from our LEADER!?
What confuses me is that we do not even know Shiroganeâs motive. Sheâs obviously completely serious about wanting to kill Kaede Akamatsu, but isnât telling anyone, not even us, why she desires such a thing?
Like I was saying, Akamatsuâs not nearly dangerous enough, so even if Mugimu thought she would be a problem later, I donât really get it.
So the real question is...What is she so afraid of?
Afraid? You think...sheâs SCARED of Akamatsu?
Maybe not of Akamatsu herself...but something that her presence in this conflict invites...
Iâm gonna go talk to her.
*Yukari stands up and starts to follow Tsumugi.
KOIME! Wait!
...!
*Yukari turns back one last time before she leaves.
What Shirogane told me just now...is it true!?
...
...Yes. It is. I can confirm everything Tsumugi just said is true.
You want proof! Take a look!
*Alter Ego Junko suddenly makes an image pop up on the screen. As soon as Kanade sees it, she squeals with excitement.
What you do from this point on is your choice, Kanade Otonokoji. You wonât see any of us trying to stop you.
...Alright...You know what? Forget I said anything.
As long as I can get my eyes on the prize...Nothing else matters...~

I actually wonder if Taylor truly believes every person sheâs with is the best in bed. Many people end up in relationships where the sex isnât as good as it was in a previous relationship, and many people are okay with that because they feel like they canât find someone who ticks all the boxes. Theyâre either good boyfriends or good in bed. And I wonder if thatâs also how she might feel?
Unless Iâm remembering things wrong, the first time she outright said someone was much better in bed than everyone else before was in her songs about Joe. Her relationship with Joe was just sex at first, so it makes sense that the sex would need to be good to continue. Then they fell for each other and they tried to make the relationship work. But they were incompatible in a lot of ways and I wonder if a lot of her âloveâ was based on how good the sex was. Which is not to say thatâs all the relationship was, but it sounds like it was a huge foundation of it and given they were pretty incompatible, I wonder if sex was a huge part of it.
Then she was feeling bored and unloved, and maybe they were having sex less often. If you think about it, werenât their happiest times the moments they were hiding away together at the beginning of the relationship (in the honeymoon phase), during the pandemic (when there wasnât much else to do) and around the time when they got engaged (which also usually leads to a sort of honeymoon phase again). When they were away from each other, or when they might have been having sex less often because itâs normal for that to happen or maybe because Joe was moody (and with that not in the mood for sex), is when the relationship wasnât going as well. What if that was normal for him but it made her feel unloved? What if the âpulling awayâ was just a normal sex 3 times a week kind of deal but anything less than sex every day made her feel unloved?
When she was with Calvin, I remember thinking about her previous relationships and how she always seemed to end them after the honeymoon phase. Then you also get toxic situations she keeps coming back to. She has this idea of a soulmate but she wants a level of constant passion that I donât know if she can achieve? The jealousy probably brought a sort of spice to her relationship with Joe and I think itâs possible she felt bored when the relationship was a normal relationship.
When she felt unloved, the idea of Matty was hot and he also promised to marry her. So she went for it and I wouldnât be surprised if âit wasnât sexy once it wasnât forbiddenâ didnât have some truth to it. But at that point, even if the sex wasnât THAT good, there was still a lot of thrill. Maybe it wasnât the quality of the sex that was hot, but the story they had made up in their heads about being meant to be together and how he saved her from Joe and all that stuff they believed. Matty left before she came down from that cloud and thatâs why she was so hurt. But in a few months she probably wouldâve grown bored again.
This is also why I wonder if itâs going to work with Travis. I think he has a higher sex drive than Joe and I think heâs all over her all the time, which she likes and makes her feel loved and makes it feel like theyâve just started dating all the time. But I wonder how that will evolve. Is he the best sex sheâs had or did she decide after everything that went down last year that she cared more about being and feeling loved? I think last year she realized that Matty and Joe werenât good matches for her, but is Travis actually a perfect match or is she just going for someone whoâs different and ticks the boxes the other guys didnât tick (safety being a huge one) while not ticking some boxes that those guys did?
I donât know if I expressed all of my thoughts properly because I donât want to reread that. But this isnât about who is better in bed out of her exes, but about how Taylor sees her relationships/sex/soulmates. But the main point was: maybe a lot of her relationship with Joe was based on how good the sex was and because that didnât work, maybe sheâs trying to care less about how good sex is and putting weight on other things, like how loved she feels?
Idk in my experience from older friends, all of whom are into sex because hi itâs me I wouldnât really be able to friends with older women especially who are ambivalent about that kind of thing, sex tends to get better for women as you figure your own shit out more. Maybe younger girls/Gen Z girls do masturbate a fair amount in their teens and early twenties but most of us millennials and certainly older women didnât. Also I think if youâre with a partner thatâs taking time to like learn you and your preferences, the sex is gonna keep getting better. Obviously youâll need to spice things up and try out fantasies and whatnot but I personally have found sex to be more and more consistent and good as Iâve gotten older and in my current relationship like also itâs actually gotten better (it was pretty fucking spectacular but itâs gotten better still) rather than plateaued. So to me I think Taylor and Travis are having super great sex by her metric. Maybe it didnât blow her mind as much as Joe at first because there was such a stark constraint from before and him but with Travis I think itâs⌠just as good and as you say super consistent now while theyâre in the honeymoon period. Weâll see if that ever changes and how her considerations around perfect partners change should that happen.
I think a difference between Joe and Travis though is she really spent ages being like âthis is just sex donât get played bestieâ to herself with Joe, and Travis from very early on was clearly making it quite clear he wants to date her not just have it be a little thing they remember fondly and tell their respective separate grandkids about. So she does feel a lot more secure. I think itâs less about less loved, and more about more secure. And I think the sex is đđź tbh. I donât think sheâd date someone at this point in her life if they were meh in bed.

hey! are akane and arete both girls?
(i'd love to read all your books! pls let us know when and if you publish them! in the mean time, can we get snippets from both pirates and post-chosen one if at all feasible?)
yes, akane and arete are both girls! also you are so kind!!! i would love to one day be published, but as of right now writing is just my passion/hobby (full time student and part time worker, so it's what i do in my spare time, but an integral part of my life all the time). writeblr will definitely be the first to know when something changes though. or when i actually finish something.
you can indeed get a snippet from the post-chosen one wip (i really need a name for it haha). here's an excerpt from chapter two: bonesetter.
(for context purposes, alice is currently employed as a sentinel in the govt. jamie is her 'handler.' she just lost the magician once again and had to go to the hospital)
âHas anyone told you that you would have been great at politics?â Jamie replied ruefully. âYou and I both know Iâd be terrible at politics,â Alice told him. âIâm just well versed in how to use power.â She yawned, readjusting herself. Exhaustion was beginning to set into her bones, the lull of unconsciousness a heavy burden to fight off. âYou did learn from the best, after all,â Jamie finished, looking down at his hands. Alice smiled faintly. âDidnât serve anyone that well in the end, though.â Look at where power and politics had gotten her sister. Look at where Alice herself had ended up, still a pawn in the political system, no matter how hard she fought. The Revolution might have won, but Alice had always known she wasnât the true winner. She never would have been, no matter the outcome. âWe helped create this world,â Jamie said. âDonât forget about the cost,â Alice reminded him bitterly. Nothing, no Commonwealth, no peace, no future, nothing had ever been worth Helena. Too bad Alice had had no say in the matter.
as i mentioned, i haven't started actually drafting the pirate story quite yet, so no snippet on that end. however, i will share a little more sustenance on the world/plot!
magic wise, the world is sort of infused with magic all around. magic interacts differently with different people, and not everyone gets a 'gift.' there are three broad categories for people who do have some sort of magical ability. miracles, who are the gifted, and usually have small, subtle abilities. they are largely considered 'good.' the second are witches, whose power usually does not differentiate between good and bad (perhaps it depends on the user). they're feared, and not well liked, but at least they're still human. the third level is monsters. usually this refers to actual monsters, such as sea beasts and ghosts and all that, but also to those who were once human, but became corrupted. (the term has been applied liberally, and not always in correct parallelisms with the actual definition).
the seas are ruled/overseen by the all seas assembly (asa), which is a religious organization and political power. it is an independent authority that outlines universal rules individual nations are beholden to (think intergovernmental organizations like the un for similar authorities). they currently have two out of four pieces of the Stone Heart (which is the heart of one of the great gods). they had a third piece, but arete's mom stole it, and it is now lost to the seas. legend has it that once the stone heart is unified as one again, it will be a beacon to nisa's heart, the Star Heart (working on that name idk if i like it). legend also has it that arete's mom found the star heart, so after her fiery death (which arete escaped), piracy surged.
& that's a little of the foundation for the present timeline i'm trying to figure out!!
help me decide my nanowrimo
#.txt#asks and answers#my writing#wip: post-chosen one#wip: pirates#thank you so much. highest compliment is people saying they would read my books#makes me want to go crazy and publish my first drafts online even though that would compromise uhh numerous things#like my intellectual property? but yeah. softly punching the wall with joy#trying to chose an excerpt was HARD and i even cut the one i chose a lot...#wish there was an excerpt for pirates but no ;-; sadly not yet#worldbuilding#and yeah arete and akane are like sisters rivals friends soulmates etc etc#because the whole thing is that arete wants akane to be her first mate because she trusts akane to be the one person to stand up to her#so even when she gathers a crew before reuniting with akane the first mate position is never fulfilled#well there's a lot more to it but that's part of it

Meant To Be (iii)
Pairing: Hotch x F!Reader
Summary: After meeting Garcia you make quick work of helping with the case, desperate to prove yourself to Hotch. Once the two of you help the team wrap everything up itâs time for them to return home. Which also means itâs time for you and Hotch to talk. One on one.
Warnings: Nothing in this chapter.
Word Count: 5,288
A/N: I wanna say Iâm super happy you guys are enjoying this series cause honestly Iâm having a lot of fun writing it! I love you all dearly. (If youâre just now finding this series, thatâs perfectly alright! Iâm glad youâre here! Feel free to catch up and enjoy the rest of the story. Hereâs a link to Part 1 and Part 2 of Meant To Be.)
The elevator ride to the bottom floor of the building was quick, allowing you to make your way to Garciaâs office in a matter of minutes. There was a plaque up next to the door, indicating that you were in the right place. Taking a moment to steady yourself you exhale before knocking on the door. A voice on the other side tells you to come in so you do. Around you are dozens of impressive looking monitors, all of which are doing something different. On top of the long L-shaped desk there were several small trinkets and toys, bringing a sort of life into the dark room. The woman sitting in front of you spins around in her chair to look at you, a quick flash of confusion on her face. She looks extremely kind and everything about her appearance makes you want to smile.Â
âHello. My name is Y/N L/N. Are you Penelope Garcia?âÂ
âYes, I am. What can I do for you?â Once youâre sure youâre in the right place you step forward to shake her hand. She stands so that you are both on the same level now, shifting awkwardly.Â
âSorry to barge in like this. Everything has gone pretty fast this morning. Iâm a new agent for the BAU. Today is my first day. The rest of the team just left on a case and SSA Hotchner asked me to stay behind and help from here.â Her face lights up with a bright smile.
âOh, thatâs awesome! Itâs really nice to meet you! Please come in, sit down. Make yourself comfortable.â With this, she pulls another chair up to the desk and then sits back down in her own. âI didnât actually know we had any new agents joining us. That being said, welcome! Iâm almost always here by myself so the company will be nice. You and I can get to know each other.â You nod with a smile, watching her as she continues what she was doing. There are several different tabs open across the screens with loads of information that she seems to be compiling. When she sees your incredulous face she laughs.
âI know, itâs a lot. Iâm just trying to get as much preliminary information as I can to send to the team. Thatâs what youâll be helping me with. We collect research, data, important records. Anything they need to find out, we provide. Kind of cool, right?â Remaining silent, you nod. Upon seeing this, Garcia stops typing for a moment. âI know it may not seem as exciting as field work but itâs still very important. Donât worry, Iâll make it fun. I promise you wonât be bored.â Patting your knee, she continues typing and you watch carefully now. This is where you will be until the case is over so you intend to make the absolute best of it. Everyone on the team has their own special skills and now is the time to learn from Garcia.Â
âSo what exactly are you looking for right now?âÂ
âI am compiling a list of the victimâs friends and family, plus witnesses from the robberies who might be able to give us any information. This will give the others a clear list of where to go first. Iâm also seeing what I can find about the people who were at the banks on the days of the robberies in case thereâs anything useful they need to know. Financial troubles, criminal records, anything to possibly link the witnesses to one another.â Scooting your chair forward so you can see better, you lean an elbow on the desk.Â
âWhat can I help with?â You ask hopefully.Â
âOh, I think that was the sexiest thing Iâve ever heard. I canât even count on one hand how many times Iâve had someone down here and all they do is sit and look over my shoulder. Sorry, rambling. I can get you logged into a monitor here and it looks like the next thing on my list was looking into the victimâs workplace. Sound good?âÂ
âYes, absolutely.â She moves over quickly and gets a separate monitor opened so you can begin researching.Â
âWeâll probably do what research we can in the next twenty to thirty minutes and then weâll call the team to tell them what weâve found out.â With that, you make quick work of doing everything you can in the time you have. Even if it is the last thing you ever do, you will prove to Aaron Hotchner just how valuable a team member you are.Â
++++++++++
The jet takes off fairly soon once the team is onboard. They all stow their go-bags and begin settling in for the flight. It is going to be a longer one today so they are all preparing themselves for the journey. Aaron finds a seat near a far window where he sets the case file down in front of himself and begins reading. His mind is swimming with thoughts and he will do anything to quiet them. The scene plays out over and over in his head, the memory still painfully fresh. Why had he said those things? He was unnecessarily harsh and he is fully aware of this. Now the first memory youâll have of starting your dream job will be your new boss treating you appallingly. What had even compelled him to speak to you that way? Seeing you had overwhelmed him. The way you looked when you came into his office for the first time. The way your hair framed your face, the light hopefulness in your eyes, the way you captivated him with your movements. Standing there, just feet away from him, you had looked just as beautiful as the first day he met you. God, why did he lie like that? How could he have said he didnât recognize you when you had stayed in his thoughts more times than he would like to admit over the past year? All the emotions he felt at the mere thought of you made him nauseous and he had no way of understanding them. As badly as he felt for it, he knew that for the time being it would be best to let you work from the BAU headquarters.Â
âHotch, are you okay?â JJâs voice brings him quickly back to reality. The fact that she could see how deeply in thought he was makes him feel an odd sense of shame and he straightens in his seat.Â
âOf course, Iâm fine.â With this, she goes back to her own seat. With a huff of exhaustion, Hotch continues reading. The cabin is silent for a time as the other team members sit reading their case files.Â
âSo,â Morganâs voice breaks the quiet. âWhat do we think of Y/N?â The mention of your name causes Hotch to perk up against his will.Â
âWell, I like her.â Emily is the first to chime in. âI know you guys all got to meet her before me but thereâs just something about her. An inherent sweetness. Iâm really excited to work with her.âÂ
âMe, too,â JJ says next. âI thought she was kind and open. In this job, that kind of personality is hard to find. I just hope the things she sees doesnât cause her to lose that. The world needs more kind people, not less. She seems tough though. I think she can handle it.âÂ
âI totally agree,â Morgan adds, leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed. âSheâs got a little bit of fierceness in her but I like that. Youâve gotta be tough to do this job but sheâs also sweet. Thatâs important too. Plus, that kidâs got the cutest smile. Kind of reminds me of my sisters.â At the mention of your smile, Hotch closes his eyes briefly trying to picture that smile directed at him. He quickly catches himself and looks back down at the file.Â
âWell, I canât say I know her that well yet but she seems intelligent. She certainly has eagerness to learn. I think that will help her be successful. Itâs very ... refreshing.â Spencer says with a small smile.
âI agree. Right off the bat sheâs got a very likable energy,â Rossi begins letting himself trail off for a moment. âAlthough, I have to say there is something about her that is so familiar. I canât quite place how I might know her though. Her name too, I recognize it. For a second I thought she recognized me too but I canât be sure.â The rest of the team watches him for a moment as he tries to recollect how he knows you but he quickly comes up blank. âIâm sure Iâll think of it eventually. Nevertheless she seems like a good kid. Iâm excited to see her at work. Just a shame weâll all have to wait.âÂ
Hearing this Aaron shifts in his seat, knowing that the comment is directed at him since he was the one that made you stay behind. He is suddenly very aware of the other team members looking at him.Â
âYeah, Hotch. Why isnât she here? I thought for sure youâd wanna see what she can do.â Derek locks eyes with Aaron, causing him to debate how to answer the question. All his life Hotch has worked to control his feelings and the way that they manifest so his face remains expressionless as he thinks for a short second.
âI think that for right now her time would be better spent helping Garcia and getting used to her new environment. I agree that she does seem very intelligent and more than capable. I would just like to speak with her one on one first before thrusting her into the high intensity atmosphere that comes with our line of work.â However, this answer doesnât seem to satisfy Morganâs curiosity.Â
âShe told me when she came out of your office that you said you didnât remember her. Is that true?â This continued line of questioning makes his blood begin to boil. Aaron Hotchner of all people knows that lies are what cause the foundations of trust to crumble. If he canât be honest with himself, how can he expect to be honest with his team? And yet, he finds himself unable to expose his own misdeed.Â
âYes, that is correct. Weâve had a lot of cases come and go in the last few years and no one should be expected to remember every interaction they have in that length of time. According to her it was only one day and it was a long time ago at that. I apologized to her and she understood. That is the end of it.âÂ
âLook, Iâm not passing judgement Hotch. Iâm just saying I can understand why she was so hurt,â Hearing this causes his heart to clench. âShe looks up to you. She didnât even have to tell me that, I could just see it. You mentored her in a time that was very uncertain, when she had a lot to prove. She still has a lot to prove and Iâm sure she thought that you would have her back and the first thing you tell her is that you donât even remember who she is? I get it man, youâre under a lot of stress right now but sheâs a part of your team. I just thought you of all people would be a little more sensitive than that.âÂ
His words cut right through Aaronâs heart like a knife but before he has a chance to say anything the laptop screen in the center of the cabin lights up, revealing you and Garcia. Glad for a break from the tension the rest of the team members look toward the screen. With one last glance at Morgan, Hotch leans towards him. âWe will discuss this later.â His voice is firm and dangerous but he pulls away to look at the laptop. âWhat did you find?â He directs at the two of you.
Seeing him causes you to straighten in your seat as you ready yourself to put on your most professional face. Garcia begins telling everyone what she was able to find out about the victim. She has significantly more information than you do but once sheâs done she allows you to share what you found. The victim worked at a local grocery store but he had been previously employed at the bank where the robbery took place. The team begin building a rough profile based on the information. You listen closely to their analysis of the unsubs, making mental notes on what you might add to the profile. Before you have a chance to add anything, Hotch thanks the two of you for your work and hangs up. For a moment, you could swear you saw a hint of sadness when he looked at you but you were sure it was just a glitch on the screen.Â
âSorry sweetpea. I could totally tell you wanted to add something. They can be pretty abrupt like that sometimes.â You simply give a small shrug. âWell, why donât you tell me what it was? Itâll give you a little practice for building profiles.â She scoots to the edge of her chair, looking at you intently to which you give a small laugh.
âWell, as we know all of the unsubs are large burly men. The five of them could easily subdue the few weaker people that were present at each of the robberies and yet they chose to bring guns. I believe this shows that they feel a certain sense of inadequacy in their everyday lives. Despite their masculine appearance I would suspect they all have mediocre jobs where they are looked down upon or treated poorly. Itâs possible that they all work at the same place but I would imagine they probably met somewhere else. Maybe a support group of some sort. The use of weapons gives them a sense of power over the victims that helps them live out their mass fantasy. The victim of the last crime scene was shot in the head which indicates some personal relationship between him and the unsub who pulled the trigger. That could be a good place to start.âÂ
âWell, it definitely makes sense to me. Maybe we can start looking in to possible support groups for these type of men. Oh, and anyone that might possibly have had reason to kill our victim.â Garcia immediately begins typing and you scoot closer to her side.Â
âShouldnât we wait for the order from Hotch?â She laughs at this.Â
âTrust me, sweetheart. At the end of the day heâs gonna thank us for the head start. One thing to know about the boss man. He likes to see initiative but he also wants you to follow his exact orders. Itâs a fine balance but once you figure out how to work the line, heâs gonna love you for it.â The thought of Hotch loving you for anything at all in the world makes your heart flutter. Almost instantly you stop that train of thought and berate yourself for even entertaining it.Â
âWell, I guess we better get started then.â The rest of the day goes smoothly. You and Garcia coordinate everything beautifully, finding a good amount of information that you save to send to Hotch at the most convenient time. The day seems to be over almost as quickly as it began and you thank Garcia before heading out to your car. The drive home seems to be much more monotonous than before. It seems like youâre back inside your apartment and stretched out on the couch before you can hardly blink. Rolling over, you reach for your phone which you had thrown on the coffee table. With a groan, you begin dialing your sisterâs number. As much as today sucked there was no one in the world youâd rather vent to than your sister.Â
âWell hey there babe. Iâve been patiently awaiting your call. Give me just a minute to get sat down. I want to hear every last detail.â There are sounds of shuffling on the other side of the phone as she finds a seat. âOkay, Iâm all good. Now, tell me about your first day at the BAU! Was it everything you dreamed it would be?âÂ
âYeah, not exactly,â You laugh. âIt was kind of rough to be honest.â There is a moment of silence as you think how to begin.
âOkay. Start at the beginning, walk me through it.âÂ
âAlright. Well, I got inside and I was honestly just in awe of being there, just getting to stand in that room. It felt like I was invincible. Derek Morgan was the first one to talk to me. He was just as charming as I remembered. Anyway, he introduced me to the rest of the team and we got to talk for a bit which was really nice, you know? From the get go I really felt like part of the team.âÂ
âNow you know I hate to interrupt but all of this sounds great!âÂ
âYeah, well, that was the best part of the day and it didnât last very long. After I met everyone I went up to Aaron Hotchnerâs office to give him my paperwork. Iâm sure you know by now that I was pretty excited to see him again, right? Well, when I told him how excited I was to be working with him again he told me that he didnât actually know who I was. He completely forgot about me. I mean, I guess I get it. Itâs been a year and a half and he meets a lot of people. Why would he remember me specifically?â
âY/N, donât invalidate your own feelings. What he said upset you and itâs okay to be hurt. That would have hurt my feelings too. Youâre a really great person and he sucks for not thinking about you ever since he met you.â Hearing this, you canât help but laugh a bit. Her ability to defend you no matter what always cheers you up.Â
âThank you. I appreciate that. I just wish he thought the same. Anyway, I gave him my paperwork so I could travel with the team. They got a case this morning and I was planning to go with them but for some reason Hotch made me stay behind even though I am cleared to be in the field. It just really bummed me out because I was super ready to get out there and start working but I got benched for my very first case. He had me stay with this girl named Garcia, sheâs the teamâs technical analyst. I mean, sheâs really sweet and we worked super well together but I just wish I could have been out there doing the things that I spent seven years of my life training for.âÂ
âI am so sorry. That sucks. I know how excited you were. Look at the bright side, this is only your first case. Youâll have plenty of opportunities to get out there and prove yourself. Itâs all gonna work out.â Unable to keep from smiling, you roll over on your side.Â
âThanks. I really hope youâre right.â Sensing the fact that youâre still upset she decides to help by changing the subject.Â
âSo, who all did you meet today? I know you already knew a few of the team members but was there anybody new?âÂ
âYeah, Elle and Gideon are no longer there. Iâm really sad I missed getting to work with them but the people I met seem really amazing. The first girl I met was named Emily Prentiss. She was really nice. The other was a guy named David Rossi.â When you finish your sentence there is nothing but silence on the other end of the phone. You wait a minute for your sisterâs response but there is nothing. Before you can ask whatâs wrong she chimes in again.Â
âDid you say David Rossi?â There is a tone in her voice that you donât recognize and it causes concern to stir in your stomach.Â
âYeah, why? Whatâs up?â There is another moment of silence.Â
âItâs -- itâs nothing. I shouldnât bring it up. Youâve already had a rough day.â As if she can sense your anxiety she continues. âDonât worry, itâs nothing bad. I promise Iâll tell you later, okay? I just donât think we should talk about it right now, thatâs all.â As much as you want to pry you can tell that no matter how much you ask, youâre not getting the answer out of her. With a sense of unease you agree and try changing the conversation again. Once youâve changed the topic to something other than work you can feel her ease again and the two of you talk for nearly 45 minutes. After a while you decide to call it a night and shortly afterwards you find yourself in bed. You hadnât even realized how exhausted you were until your head hit the pillow. Your sleep is dreamless which you decide in the morning is probably a good thing.Â
++++++++++
The remainder of the case is spent hunkered down in Garciaâs office either doing frantic research or simply getting to know one another. In just a short while the two of you become very fast friends. You realize quickly that you share a lot of common interests and all of your conversations are endlessly fascinating. It also doesnât take you very long to realize that you actually enjoy the work that you do with her. There is quite a bit of skill required to dig as deeply and accurately as the two of you do. It is a race against the clock to find everything you need in order to help the team and there is a certain level of excitement that comes with that. Of course you still wish you were out in the field but in the end you learn a lot and make a good friend along the way. The case ends rather succinctly with all five unsubs found and arrested with no more casualties along the way. Itâs a good feeling, knowing that you helped to catch the bad guys and no one had to die for you to do so. The day the team is set to return you and Garcia head out for coffee before they show up, figuring that you deserve a little treat after all of your hard work. You make light conversation as you make your way back into the building just in time for the team to arrive. You watch them each make their way to their desks, setting down their bags and taking a moment to rest. Of course the last one to walk in is Hotch who heads straight up to his office, shutting the door behind him.Â
When you feel like itâs an appropriate time you make your way over to Morganâs desk. Upon seeing you his lips crack into a wide smile.Â
âWell hey sweetheart! I have to say, you did awesome work on this case.â As he says this, he extends his hand for a high five which you quickly grant him. âI know it wasnât easy having to sit out but you did great. Iâm proud of you.â It takes everything in you not to blush.Â
âThanks. I learned a lot and I made a good friend along the way.â
âYeah, Garciaâs pretty great isnât she?â He says with a knowing smile.
âShe definitely is. She talks about you a lot, you know.âÂ
âOh, I know. Baby girl just canât stop thinking about me. Not that I blame her, of course.â At this you lightly punch his arm.Â
âYou are both such teases.â This makes Morgan laugh.Â
âWe gotta keep things interesting.â He leans forward as though heâs about to start his paperwork but he quickly leans back to look at you. âHey, now that Iâm back we gotta go out for drinks tonight. Everyone else is already game so long as you are.âÂ
âYeah, Iâd like that.â You confirm with a grin.
âGreat. You know, Iâd say Iâm buying but I kind of feel like you owe me.â Your brow furrows in confusion.
âWhat do you mean by that?âÂ
âWell, I was trying to get some answers for you so I asked Hotch why he wouldnât let you on the case and he royally chewed me out for it. In his defense I probably shouldnât have asked in front of the rest of the team but that decision still just doesnât sit right with me.â Morganâs words mingle in your head. It doesnât sit right with you either but it isnât really your place to question your bossâ orders.Â
âIâm sorry he got upset with you. I do appreciate you defending me though. Youâre my knight in shining denim.â
âAnytime kid. Iâm happy to help.â Getting to talk to Morgan has almost instantly lifted your spirits. However, it doesnât take long for your heart to drop into your stomach.Â
âAgent L/N. May I speak to you in my office please?â You hadnât even noticed that Hotch had come out of his office until his voice drew your attention to him. With a quick look at Morgan, who gives you a reassuring glance, you push yourself off his desk and make your way over to where Hotch is standing. Once youâre at his side he extends a hand, allowing you to step inside first. He follows quickly, shutting the door behind him. âPlease, have a seat.â He says, gesturing towards a leather couch on the far wall. As you begin to sit on one end he takes up residence on the other, his knee just inches away from yours. Once youâre both settled he focuses all of his attention on you. He doesnât seem angry but you arenât holding your breath. Itâs best to just stay professional and speak with him earnestly.Â
âIâm glad to see you all back safely sir.â You begin. After the stress of the case, you want to make sure he knows that as hurt as you were by his previous decision you harbor no ill will towards him.Â
âThank you. Itâs not very often that cases end as well as this one did. You understand that, donât you? This was a special circumstance.âÂ
âYes, I realize that. Iâm just grateful that it did end happily even if it was just this once.â There is an intensity in the way he watches you.
âGood. I just want to make sure you fully know what to expect.âÂ
âI do sir. I did the day that I applied for school. I wouldnât be here if I didnât.â Staying silent for a moment he nods as if in thought.Â
âI know before I left I said we would be able to talk. Iâd like to learn a little bit more about you and from there Iâll be able to evaluate your abilities before taking you into the field. I know it wasnât the decision you were hoping for but I hope you understand it nonetheless.â
âOf course. Itâs not my place to question you and in the end I learned a lot from Garcia. Plus she was nice to work with.âÂ
âGood. Iâm very glad to hear that you were able to make the most of the situation.â He stops for a moment, his gaze relaxing. âI wanted to tell you how well you did on this case. A challenge was presented to you and you handled it with grace. The information you provided was incredibly helpful and your suggestions were very well thought out. I was very impressed.â The softness in his eyes as he praises you leaves a fluttering sensation in your stomach. Throughout the entirety of the case you had been so hell bent on proving yourself to him and hearing him say that you had done well made every hour of hard work worth it. As much as your heart is singing you have to remind yourself to be calm. Even though he is being kind to you now, he had made his feelings known to you during your first meeting. There is no reason to read into things. Clearly he doesnât feel what you feel.Â
âThank you sir. I would be lying if I said I wasnât disappointed when I was left behind but I realized that Iâm grateful to be here no matter what. I worked really hard to get here, to be doing this kind of work, and not everyone gets the chance to do what theyâre truly meant to be doing. As heartbreaking as the outcome of this job usually is, I canât imagine myself doing anything else.â With every word the two of you are locked into one anotherâs eyes. For a moment you can almost swear he is holding his breath.Â
âI appreciate that sense of purpose. I will always support my team but it makes it easier with members who are invested.âÂ
âI am. Completely. Iâm here. I know you havenât gotten a real chance to see me work but please know that my heart is in this.âÂ
âThat was never in question,â Hotch pauses, letting his eyes fall to his lap as he considers his next sentence. âI believe now that I made a rash decision in asking you to stay behind. I can see that you are mentally prepared to be in the field. I apologize for my harsh words. I of course canât say anything for your physical performance yet but I wonât be able to evaluate the full extent of your abilities until I am able to watch you in the field. On the next case I would like you to join the rest of the team.â A breath of relief leaves your lips.
âOf course. Iâm ready to get to work.â
âI know. Youâll have the chance soon enough. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to come speak with me.âÂ
âThank you sir.â Hotch simply nods in response, beginning to stand. You follow his actions, gathering that he is done with the conversation. As you make your way to the door, feeling much lighter than when you came in, he stops you.
âAgent L/N,â The sound of his voice causes you to turn back. âI just wanted to say again that Iâm sorry for not remembering you. I never meant to hurt you. It isnât that you were forgettable. Itâs just that a lot has happened in the last year.â This apology seems much more heartfelt than before and you try to hide a smile.Â
âI forgive you, sir.â With that you take your leave, making your way right back to Morganâs desk. The shift in your mood must be palpable because he looks up at you with a smile.
âThatâs not the face of someone that just got yelled at by Hotch.âÂ
âNo, no he didnât yell at me. He was just telling me I did a good job and he cleared me to work in the field on the next case.âÂ
âGood for you, kid. Iâm glad weâre finally gonna get a chance to see what you can really do,â Nodding you rest against the edge of his desk again. âNow, see? That wasnât too bad was it?â Looking back towards Hotchâs office you can see him bent over his desk, filling out paperwork. Being able to watch him for a moment without fear of falling apart allows you to crack a small smile.
âNo. I guess it wasnât.âÂ

đChasing the Sun
Chasing the Sun is my long Safi/Theron fic, which starts pre-SoR and goes until I decided that I didn't like canon anymore and took it massively AU. It's currently undergoing lots of rewrites because I've made about 50 different AU decisions and I keep changing my mind about how they all work together.
It's a lot of missing moments, extra exposition, and fixing some of the things that don't make sense from Forged Alliances all the way through Ziost, and then when it gets to KOTFE it goes off the rails and I just start doing other things with the plot, but the main focus is Safi and Theron's relationship and how it progresses. Very much a romance story with a backdrop of galaxy saving and other shenanigans.
It also is the foundation for my unified canon AU, in which all 8 of my main class OCs found the Alliance but do things differently than the KOTFE story. (Safi is the Commander, everyone else + Theron and Lana are on a sort of council thing, they engage in galactic chicanery and drama.)
Have a glimpse of the ridiculous level of romance that's typical throughout this thing (although I will say this scene in particular is at the high end of the spectrum even for this fic):
âSafiya,â he murmured softly, wrapping his fingers around her wrist and moving her hand from his cheek to his lips so he could press a kiss against the center of her palm. Safiâs eyes darkened with surprise and pleasureâhe almost never called her by her full name unless he was annoyed with her, but the tenor of his voice left no doubt that annoyance was the farthest thing from his mind.
âTheron,â she whispered, her voice trembling slightly with emotion.
Suddenly that feeling, the one that was wonderfully new yet old and familiar, swelled up inside of Theron, and though for a split second he felt so terrified that he might be sick, he had no chance of stopping the words before they fell from his mouth, somber and joyful all at once.
âI love you,â he said, and for a moment he couldnât believe heâd actually said it; never before, in his entire life, had he uttered those words to anyone, but as nerve-wracking as it was to hear them hanging in the air between he and Safi, he couldnât bring himself to regret saying them.
âI love you, too,â Safiâs smile was blinding when she answered, and Theron realized that just as he had never said those words, they had never been said to him either, but it seemed very right that Safi was the first to give him the joy of hearing them.

Lus and the Human Portal Clone Theory
Even before Keeping Up A-fear-ances aired, I have been working for almost a year now on running through all the possible various suspects with wonderful folks like @sepublicâ , @anistarroseâ , and @elementalist-kdjâ . Like the post title indicates, from sheer process of elimination, the only conclusion that made sense to me was a clone made of Luz by the portal door, and Iâve been working on refining and reworking said conclusion up to the version I will lay out here.
Now, as @safetayyâ , @theowlhouseheadcanons , and @50shades-of-blue have heard from me before, the portal I've long suspected was not made to go from the Demon Realm to the Human Realm, but rather to go from the Human Realm to the Demon Realm by humans, for humans. This is because it then could tie into the hypothetical existence of a Luz clone without having the issue of asking where Eda, Lilith, and King's clones are, as the clone in this case is the result of a function of the door to create a basic level duplicate of any human that passes through it rather than it happening for just anyone that passes through.
With this, it's because the suitcase form of the portal looks as thought it indicates it was used for temporary trips to the Demon Realm, much like how suitcases were used when railways and international boats made travel more accessible for the middle and lower classes. For example:
Going by the way the door âfacesâ and the way it swings open, the ergonomics of the portal makes it look an awful lot like a right handed out swing door, with the Human Realm on the âinsideâ and the Demon Realm on the âoutside.â And the arrow in the diagram depicts the general direction of traffic that such right handed, out swing doors are typically design with in mind - ergo, showing what way the portal appears to facilitate travel in.
Now, before you ask, the reason why I think the portal could have been created in the human realm in the first place is that it might require an extra component/bit of help or two from the Owl Deity which Iâve discussed before in the past as hinted by these connected designs:
Iâll explore how I feel the revelation that such a twist about the portalâs origins could play into the themes and narrative of the show under the cut, but overall, I feel these are potential significant details to keep in mind for the rest of this arc of building a new door and handling the idea of Lus having initially been made as a temporary-duration clone, hence how "Luz" comes off so uncannily in the letters as she wasn't meant for long term impersonations.
That, and why I named this the Human Portal Clone theory, for those wondering about the name.
Alongside this, my thought has been that walking back through the portal to the Human Realm basically makes the portal send a recall signal to tell the clone to return to it, where the clone would be reabsorbed into the portal and its memories are given to the original. However, with Luz going back into the Demon Realm for a brief time in YBOS, I am of the mind that it doesnât just make another clone, but rather that doing so merely made the door turn off the recall signal and allowed "Lus" to resume the impersonation.
And as for the clone itself and why theyâre writing letters to Camila, well, imagine it from Lus' perspective. To her at the time of creation, the last thing she probably knew was that she had been chasing the cute little owl that took her Azura book into the woods, and right when the bus to Reality Check Camp was about to arrive.
Also, if you think about it, Lus being the work of someone we/donât know yet raises way more plot threads/questions than answers compared to being the work of the portal, as outlined below:
TLDR at end of post for those wondering
Belos? How and why before YBOS where he actually started paying attention to Luz for the first time and actually got his hands on a portal?Â
Eda? Why would she do all this and not tell Luz she can goof around without needing to worry about her mom or the camp/in time to fool the camp, especially when it took a good amount of time for Eda to even start feeling that close to Luz?Â
Hooty got ruled out from the getgo since he canât hold pencils, King just isnât that subtle, and everyone else that Luz knows has the major issues of just straight up not knowing about the camp in the first place. Well, that and a lack of another known method of getting to the Human Realm in the first place.
The camp? Why would they worry about a missing camper whose disappearance is all HER fault and thus would more logically result in a call to her parent than some convoluted clone conspiracy?Â
And finally, some currently completely unknown third party?
If weâre talking a Changeling, A) itâd be easy for Luz to dismiss them and B) that just makes all the ominous portrayal of Lus super straightforward instead of a subversion like is the showâs shtick.
If weâre talking dimensional counterparts, A) they have to REALLY have led a very similar life to Luzâs in order for there to be enough common ground for Luz to listen, and B) dimensional counterparts arenât even a confirmed or likely thing that people cooked up from Episode 1 side characters influenced by Amityâs concept art.
And if weâre talking some complete surprise third party group or another, it doesnât make sense to introduce a third party and their motives and plans to the show this late in when Belos is already taking up the bulk of it all.
Hell, if anything, the continued existence of the duplicate in of itself would indicate that the target of the conspiracy is none other than Camila Noceda than anything to do with Luz or Eda, especially with the complete lack of anyone taking advantage of Luz and or Eda.Â
From the getgo, Witches Before Wizards already hard-baked into the show the idea that Luz is NOT inherently special or anything into the foundations of the show from the getgo - ergo, Camila likely just is an absolutely regular human being, someone who has no justification for such a convoluted conspiracy to surround them.
That said, I believe that the idea of the portal having originated from the Human Realm could potentially play into some interesting stories to be had with Camila and Lus here, especially as the conspiracy board shot from the promo was confirmed by Dana to apparently be from S2A, not from the episodes past Yesterdayâs Lie:
After all, with Luz searching the library for a way home this coming episodes, perhaps she might figure out something the next couple of episodes that allows her texts to send through, which would logically lead to the above picture. That, and Camila and Lus being confused by and trying to figure out whatâs going on there.
I mean, the cabin in the woods likely has a very close connection to the portal and itâs origins given how closely tied the two structures seem to be, and as far as we can tell, Luz never mentioned the cabin in her videos to Camila, but if Lus tries to retrace her steps, that would be a natural vector to lead Camila to the cabin and thus allow us a chance to actually investigate it.
That said, all following the trail would do is lead her and Lus to a dead end at the abandoned cabin, where they would have nothing else to do except discuss their complicated relationship concerning Luz and twiddle their thumbs while waiting for Luz to finish things on her end - which while something I think would be interesting to see, I just donât see how much of a way to keep them in the greater picture of the show without some kind of project or activity that the two of them could work together on on screen.Â
And thatâs what leads me to a particular train of thought here, starting with the question of what if Luz FAILS to make a working portal over the course of S2A and such?
With the possible in-universe mystery over what the heck is going on with Lus, perhaps the cabin might hold some notes from the original last human owner - if not potentially the creator - of Edaâs portal as well as potentially some of the same materials and such from previous trips.
Cue CAMILA building a working portal, following in the footsteps of the original creator and such and thus finding a reason to stay on screen, all the while potentially demonstrating both why Belos wanted the portal instead of making his own, as well as diving into the Owl Deityâs connection with the original portal. Heck, maybe the Owl Deity is only accessible in the Human Realm and that plays a part in Belos wanting to get to the Human Realm, which would bring Camila directly into contact with the magic her daughter has been interacting with.
Also, just imagine the internal conflict going on here with Lus. After all, helping Camila build a portal to get the original Luz -and hoo boy would that be a tough thing to grapple with- would most definitely do that and make both Lus AND Camila question how much the latter likes Lus vs Luz.
Like, just imagine it. There would be major chances for Lus and Camila to discuss what would happen if and when theyâre finished with the portal, and what will happen to Lusâ relationship with Camila if and when Luz gets back.
Does Camila really prefer her daughter to be all more ânormalâ like Lus, or does she prefer the old, âweirdâ daughter from before the summer with Luz?
Perhaps she might be able to figure out how to strike a nuanced balance between the two, and all on a metaphorical journey to truly build a better connection between her and her daughter(s?).Â
TLDR: Or in short, I canât help but feel it would be fitting to see Camila building a bridge WITH Lus TO Luz.Â
Particularly, by being the one to craft an actual working portal in the Human Realm instead of Luz in the Demon Realm, showing a parent putting in an active effort to get down to their childâs level rather than waiting for said child to try to get up to their parentâs level even if they canât or find it incredibly hard to do so.

My mother was a copyeditor for the Times for 33 years so I benefit from a subscription. They send out a weekly newsletter on Monday mornings and this one felt important to share. So I am copying and pasting here, inclusive of links and diagrams:
Good morning. Many vaccine skeptics have since changed their minds and gotten shots. Hereâs why.
How to persuade
When the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a poll at the start of the year and asked American adults whether they planned to get vaccinated, 23 percent said no.
But a significant portion of that group â about one quarter of it â has since decided to receive a shot. The Kaiser pollsters recently followed up and asked these converts what led them to change their minds. The answers are important, because they offer insight into how the millions of still unvaccinated Americans might be persuaded to get shots, too.
First, a little background: A few weeks ago, it seemed plausible that Covid-19 might be in permanent retreat, at least in communities with high vaccination rates. But the Delta variant has changed the situation. The number of cases is rising in all 50 states.
Although vaccinated people remain almost guaranteed to avoid serious symptoms, Delta has put the unvaccinated at greater risk of contracting the virus â and, by extension, of hospitalization and death. The Covid death rate in recent days has been significantly higher in states with low vaccination rates than in those with higher rates:
(For more detailed state-level charts, see this piece by my colleagues Lauren Leatherby and Amy Schoenfeld Walker. The same pattern is evident at the county level, as the health policy expert Charles Gaba has been explaining on Twitter.)
Nationwide, more than 99 percent of recent deaths have occurred among unvaccinated people, and more than 97 percent of recent hospitalizations have occurred among the unvaccinated, according to the C.D.C. âLook,â President Biden said on Friday, âthe only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated.â
The three themes
What helps move people from vaccine skeptical to vaccinated? The Kaiser polls point to three main themes.
(The themes apply to both the 23 percent of people who said they would not get a shot, as well as to the 28 percent who described their attitude in January as âwait and see.â About half of the âwait and seeâ group has since gotten a shot.)
1. Seeing that millions of other Americans have been safely vaccinated.
Consider these quotes from Kaiserâs interviews:
âIt was clearly safe. No one was dying.â â a 32-year-old white Republican man in South Carolina
âI went to visit my family members in another state and everyone there had been vaccinated with no problems.â â a 63-year-old Black independent man in Texas
âAlmost all of my friends were vaccinated with no side effects.â â a 64-year-old Black Democratic woman in Tennessee
This suggests that emphasizing the safety of the vaccines â rather than just the danger of Covid, as many experts (and this newsletter) typically do â may help persuade more people to get a shot.
A poll of vaccine skeptics by Echelon Insights, a Republican firm, points to a similar conclusion. One of the most persuasive messages, the skeptics said, was hearing that people have been getting the vaccine for months and it is working very well without any major issues.â
2. Hearing pro-vaccine messages from doctors, friends and relatives.
For many people who got vaccinated, messages from politicians, national experts and the mass media were persuasive. But many other Americans â especially those without a college degree â donât trust mainstream institutions. For them, hearing directly from people they know can have a bigger impact.
âHearing from experts,â as Mollyann Brodie, who oversees the Kaiser polls, told me, âisnât the same as watching those around you or in your house actually go through the vaccination process.â
Here are more Kaiser interviews:
âMy daughter is a doctor and she got vaccinated, which was reassuring that it was OK to get vaccinated.â â a 64-year-old Asian Democratic woman in Texas
âFriends and family talked me into it, as did my place of employment.â â a 28-year-old white independent man in Virginia
âMy husband bugged me to get it and I gave in.â â a 42-year-old white Republican woman in Indiana
âI was told by my doctor that she strongly recommend I get the vaccine because I have diabetes.â â a 47-year-old white Republican woman in Florida
These comments suggest that continued grass-roots campaigns may have a bigger effect at this stage than public-service ad campaigns. The one exception to that may be prominent figures from groups that still have higher vaccine skepticism, like Republican politicians and Black community leaders.
3. Learning that not being vaccinated will prevent people from doing some things.
There is now a roiling debate over vaccine mandates, with some hospitals, colleges, cruise-ship companies and others implementing them â and some state legislators trying to ban mandates. The Kaiser poll suggests that these requirements can influence a meaningful number of skeptics to get shots, sometimes just for logistical reasons.
âHearing that the travel quarantine restrictions would be lifted for those people that are vaccinated was a major reason for my change of thought.â â a 43-year-old Black Democratic man in Virginia
âTo see events or visit some restaurants, it was easier to be vaccinated.â â a 39-year-old white independent man in New Jersey
âBahamas trip required a COVID shot.â â a 43-year-old Hispanic independent man in Pennsylvania
#point being: if there are people you know in your life who have not gotten vaccinated. BE RELENTLESS#this is the most crucial outreach we can be doing#covid#covid-19

How to meet (or reunite with) your Digimon partner, according to 02
Hereâs a post dedicated to those of you who are worried or sad about Kizunaâs premise, or how the way it ends is supposed to lead up to the 02 epilogue, and are thinking of that elephant-in-the-room question of âso then how do they get their partners back?â Iâm not the Kizuna staff, so I canât say anything for sure, but I can tell you that 02 gives us some interesting leads here!
Youâre probably thinking âwerenât Kizuna and the problem of partnership dissolution made after 02? Isnât this an Adventure movie? Why are you bringing 02 into this?â Ah, but you see, that might be true if youâre thinking of it on a technical plot level, but 02 as a series isnât as thematically displaced from Kizuna as you might think, especially when the exact same real-life incident about a kid skipping grades, the one that literally was the foundation for 02â˛s creation to begin with, was brought back 20 years later for Menoaâs backstory. Certainly, a lot of the plot points introduced in Kizuna are new to it, but the themes and things it wants to say about self-acceptance and how to pursue happiness have very deep parallels to 02 -- which means that itâs not much of a stretch to think that some of the answers to the questions presented in Kizuna can be found in 02, too.
While itâs true that âgetting your partner back from adulthood existential-crisis induced disappearanceâ is not a problem that necessarily presented itself in 02, remember that weâre dealing with a lot of theme parallels here -- a Digimon is part of oneâs heart, and the central characters of both narratives (Ken and Menoa) had backstories that came from the same real-life story, one that warns that pressuring a kid into âadultâ situations that theyâre not emotionally prepared to handle will mess them up and cause them to lose their sense of self. The answer to the question of âhow to get a partner backâ in Kizuna was only pursued by the very scientifically-minded Menoa, who mashed keys on the keyboard and played around with egg data to get it to work, but this is Digimon, where these kinds of fateful meetings and evolutionary moments happen because of the heart, and everyone depicted lost their partners for reasons related to mentality and not science (remember, Menoa lost Morphomon at 14). Has Menoa done any real introspection in the last eight years? Probably not.
So, back in 02, when Ken did lose his sense of self, he eventually came back to his senses and decided to reclaim Wormmon. Thanks to how the plot worked, Wormmon merely âdiedâ and was set to be reborn at the Village of Beginnings, but...
Just being reborn by the mechanics of the plot wouldnât do it. Ken would never be able to find Wormmon again until he accepted something else, which is...
...himself. Everything good and bad about him, what heâd done in the past, how he has to move on with that, and how to move on with the person he actually is instead of the shell of the Kaiser. And with that, he is led to Wormmon, and is able to start the process of repairing their relationship.
So the point made here in 02 episode 23 is: one will only be able to be reunited with their partner if they can accept everything about themselves and become able to move on -- something that Menoa, who forced herself into the role of an âadultâ in the hopes of getting more acceptance among her peers and eventually drowned herself in nostalgia, was most certainly not doing over the course of the movie.
So anyway, we get to 02 episode 50, and the parallel becomes even less subtle -- âa Digimon partnerâ is given a very direct correlation to âoneâs own personal aspirations and dreamsâ. If you look back at the entire plot of 02 up to this point, with Ken and the Dark Seed children, all of them have been shoving aside âthemselvesâ and âwhat they wanted to doâ in an effort to please others -- to become well-behaved, studious, athletic, whatever society expected of them, instead of what they wanted to do.Â
So all of the kids admit all of the embarrassing, âundignifiedâ dreams that theyâd been holding back because theyâd felt that they werenât âallowedâ to have them (following Daisukeâs shameless example of admitting that heâs fine with doing something as simple as running a ramen shop), and are encouraged to be a bit shameless about it and forget what society wants them to do, instead of what they want to do. The word âbeliefâ is brought up a lot in this episode -- itâs not just having dreams, you also have to really, truly believe in your ability to make them happen and have the gusto to follow them without restraint.
And so, this strong resolution to have âbeliefâ allows their partners to spontaneously manifest in front of them -- and itâs all but stated that said âdreamsâ and said partners are equivalent, and even implied that their partners had always existed in their hearts in some form, just not able to truly appear until they fully accepted themselves. Or, in other words, you will only be able to meet your partner when you embrace everything about yourself and what you want to do, regardless of what others think or what society expects of you, and have the will to pursue it.
(By the way, yes. Spontaneously manifest. Even if most of Adventure/02 had been defined by concrete mechanics for the most of it, in the end, this is still a narrative about the human heart before anything else.)
And guess who else learns this lesson by the end of the episode?
When Oikawa, who had been childishly (hmmm) chasing after shallow symbols of his past in order to get it back (hmmmmmm) because he considered himself too much of a âtainted adultâ (hmmmm, sounds familiar) back in 02 episode 48, finally comes to realize what his actual mistake was and that he should have been more free about pursuing his dreams instead of accepting Chikara taking them away from him and Hiroki, Oikawa is finally able to reconnect with the partner heâd âlostâ all of those years ago (hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm). So, again, you will only be able to reunite with your partner once you accept everything about yourself and what you should do from here on out.
(Hey, fun fact: Pipimon also spontaneously appeared in front of Oikawa the moment he accepted this. Although the exact specifics of the current âadulthoodâ issue were probably not conceived until Kizuna, ânot being able to reach a partner that you once had due to cutting your own dreams offâ has precedent!)
Moreover, Menoaâs backstory seems practically engineered to make sure that she never witnessed this nor learned this lesson -- she lost her partner âeight years agoâ, in 2002, the exact same year the events of 02 took place. Assuming that she lost said partner in the middle of the year (her flashback seems to take place in spring or so, when university admissions results are issued), this would have prevented her from participating in the âworld tourâ battles around the world in 02 episodes 40-42 and engaging with Daisuke and friends, and particularly from joining in the final fight with BelialVamdemon and therefore witnessing what happened with the Dark Seed children and Oikawa. Which means that her ability to get this cynical about partnership dissolution being âinevitableâ and that thereâs no way to regain your hopes and dreams was enabled by the fact that she didnât get to learn the lesson that the Tokyo Chosen Children did all those years ago...
Letâs look at the four who lost their partners over the course of Kizuna. Where were they at the time they lost their partners?
Menoa: Considering herself spurned by other people who âlook at her weirdâ and desperate to âlive on her own two feetâ and âbe useful to the worldâ, forced herself into the role of an âadultâ by getting herself to skip grades into a university setting she was unprepared for, for the sake of recognition more than anything, and ended up living a very lonely life
Taichi: Isolated himself from others for the sake of living independently and âhaving his own life to liveâ, losing focus about anything he wanted to do, and allowing himself to get slowly disconnected from Agumon
Yamato: Developed a sense of detachment from his old hobbies and started living life for a âgrace periodâ due to lack of real focus on what he wanted to do
Sora: Started forcing herself into âobligationsâ to succeed her mother in flower arrangement and from her Chosen Child duties, to the point she isolated herself from others and started losing control over herself
(Funny thing: a big part of 02â˛s story was about finding support in others and fostering your relationships, and here we are with four people who are slowly âisolatingâ themselves from others...)
Itâs not about âbecoming an adultâ and losing your partner. Itâs about shoving yourself into the societally-enforced standard of an adult and losing yourself in the process, and therefore losing your ability to see your partner.
And so, by the end of Kizuna, all four of them have lost their partners -- but we also see the characters we know and love starting to follow their way to what we know is the 02 epilogue, through some very unsubtle hint dropping (retroactive hints to the careers weâre already aware of, such as Taichiâs future in diplomacy). Which means that the eventual existence of the 02 epilogue is in itself the answer to the question, because the epilogue is: everyone found what they wanted to do and pursued it, and therefore everyone eventually figured out their personal aspirations and what they wanted to do, and were able to accept and pursue it, which was established earlier as the key to meeting your partner.
By the way! Itâs also revealed in 02 episode 50 that the Digital World itself is at least partially formed on âthe power to materialize emotionsâ (both positive and negative), which is the explanation for so many phenomena over both Adventure and 02 being related to the human heart, and presumably is also why Digimon partners can even exist to begin with (theyâre literally supposed to be a part of the inner self, so the power of the Digital World is what âbrings them outâ). All four âdisappearancesâ on record happened with all four of them in the real world, fixated on their obligations to society and attempting to turn themselves into model citizens, but all of the above âmeetingsâ with partners in 02 -- and Menoa making true âcontactâ with Morphomon (inside Eosmon) for the first time since her disappearance -- also happened in the Digital World, the world of idealistic dreams, personal aspirations, and the materialization of peopleâs emotions.

https://equalizersoccer.com/2021/03/05/christen-press-forward-position-training-profile-uswnt/
Christen Press is known for scoring world-class goals. The onlooking public swoons over the final product which is so often a picturesque finish bent into the side netting or hammered into the upper corner. Press often does this with such confidence that she makes the extraordinary look easy, even though it is anything but.
That final product, though, is in some ways the simpler part of the process. Pressâ training habits and approach to the game embody the notion that most of an athleteâs work is done away from the public eye, on training fields and when nobody else is watching. Her unique approach to the game starts with individual training, where her focus on off-ball movement and manipulating tight spaces â rather than shooting for the sake of it, or individual dribbling drills â develops her ability to distinguish herself from any other forward. More than most, she can seamlessly transition between wide and center-forward roles.
âI think especially in the U.S., we donât have as many players that manipulate space with off-ball movement,â Press said in an interview last year. â[Itâs] something I learned in Europe and I think all European forwards do this, but we donât often have players who do that. We typically have had players who are using strength to create space. So, I think when I play in the nine specifically, but even wide, my strength is off-ball movement, being very unpredictable, hard to mark, being dynamic and being kind of like blindside, off-ball so that Iâm always stretching the line. And I think thatâs a huge strength because it gives the midfield more room to play.â
All goal-scorers require a certain level of selfishness to be successful, which Press recognizes. What sets her apart is the execution in those moments. To paraphrase her teammate, Megan Rapinoe, you can always make a selfish decision to shoot and not pass⌠as long as you score.
âIn the final third, I think Iâve always had a goal-scorerâs mentality,â Press said. âOnce Iâm in range of shooting, I donât think about anything else. If I happen to pass, itâs because I couldnât have shot. And I think that thereâs a breed of players that are just wired that way. And then thereâs a breed of players that play the same position that arenât. I am wired like that, and thereâs also pros and cons to it, but my first thought is always setting my feet to score, setting my feet to take a touch and then score. And then anything else that happens in that space is just a second option, honestly.â
***
Press blazed her own path to being a United States womenâs national team regular. She left the U.S. club scene in 2012 to play in Sweden, feeling as though she needed to make a change after largely being left out of the U.S. picture by then head coach Pia Sundhage. Her back story has been recounted ad nauseam over the past decade, but it is still essential to understanding the person and the player â a do-everything forward who has been shaped by these experiences. Her path is unique among her peers of the same generation, and it shows in her different approach to playing forward.
Press famously thrived in Gothenburg, becoming the first American to win the Damallsvenskanâs golden boot. That move abroad â at a time when U.S. internationals not only were not playing abroad, but were actively discouraged from doing so â ironically solidified her place in the United States team ever since. Her goal in last monthâs SheBelieves Cup against Argentina was her 60th, tying her with Shannon MacMillan for ninth in U.S. history.
Press grew up as a pure No. 9, a goal-scorer. She carried on with that through college, lighting up the scoring record books at Stanford, and used that to her advantage during that glorious first stretch of her career in Sweden. Cracking the national team was a different story. Abby Wambach was the incumbent No. 9 at the time, often alongside Amy Rodriguez, and Alex Morgan â who graduated college the same year as Press â burst onto the scene as the U.S.â up-and-coming No. 9, meaning Press was often relegated to wide positions.
For a long time, Pressâ place there felt shoehorned, no doubt a contributing factor to a relatively quiet World Cup in 2015, when she was pegged by so many to be the breakout star. Slowly, however, she adapted, choosing to accept whichever role she was given if it meant playing for the best team in the world. Now, she thrives in both wide and central roles. The difference was tangible at the 2019 World Cup, where the wide role which once looked so uncomfortable for Press was the one which she stepped into for the semifinal against England, due to Megan Rapinoeâs injury. Press scored 10 minutes into that impromptu start, helping the U.S. reach (and win) a second straight final.
âI think that I have more of a responsibility than any other forward to play in all the roles as needed and I think thatâs historically been because Iâve been a substitute coming on,â she said. âSo, you kind of have to be ready for whoeverâs coming out; youâre the first sub on. And now, I think itâs just flexibility because Iâve done it and Iâve done it okay in several positions that everyoneâs like, âoh, well she can.â So, I think thatâs a blessing and a curse. It gets you on a roster to be versatile, but I feel like having a stake on the field is like youâre in one position and youâre always going to show up in that position. I think that that has its pros as well.â
Today, it is accepted as fact that Press can play across all three positions on the front line: center forward, wide left and wide right. For years, that versatility was a burden she carried, a struggle through the purgatory of being an elite player without a defined position. Now, however, she has leveraged this to her advantage. Press has for so long juggled different forward positions that she has mastered each of them. Her lack of a defined position contributes to the outside worldâs inability to explicitly qualify her greatness, but it is also the very thing which makes Press such a singular talent.
Her shift throughout the front line illustrates how the forward position varies between certain roles, even if in nuanced ways. Press said the definitions are a little more blurred in this system, and that each forward shares the responsibility to get in behind and score, but the physical difference in where each position lines up on the field affects how she plays each position.
âI think technically it is very different playing in the different positions, because your orientation is just completely changed,â she said. âAnd I think my whole career, I played with the offside line behind me. Thatâs a nine. So, playing wide for the first time was really hard because you see the whole game through one eye. And your dominant foot and your mobility of your hips â I know it sounds crazy â really affects what you can and canât do on each side. But now Iâve been passed around so many times, I feel like Iâm like, okay, my second eye is â I can still see out of this one.â
***
Press views each offseason as a little book of its own. In past years, she would write a draft of what those figurative chapters would be, listing the things she wanted to improve in her game and designing drills to achieve those goals. Press said that she has had trainers in the past, but nobody knows what she needs better than her.
She tries to balance the design of her training sessions to work on skills she thinks she is exceptional at and areas where she thinks she is not very good. Anything in between gets lost. This is where those subtle foundations are formed daily.
âI have a very regimented way that I train, a flow of when I control practice, this is how it flows,â Press said. âWithin each segment of my training, Iâll have specific things that Iâm working on, and always starting in the beginning of training with the most simple drills that you would never actually see a professional do âreally, really childish and then just working on the mechanics and growing from there.â
Press points to quick-release shooting as one of these simple things she trains: she starts as basic as lining up a bag of balls on the six-yard line and quickly shooting with only one step, to work on generating power. Press executes this better than any other teammate and that is because she has, through the years, taken what is seemingly a disadvantage and figured out a way to create an advantage out of it.
Instead of viewing the ball as stuck under her feet, Press sees an opportunity to catch a defender between steps or a goalkeeper flat-footed. Whereas many forwards are especially dangerous when barreling down the field at speed, Press might be the best goal-scorer in the world from a standing-still position in open play. She trains that â again, by beginning simply. Press will line up a bag of balls on the six-yard line and shoot in quick succession, taking only one step back to reset. This is the foundation of generating power.
âI think that if I look through the years [at] the space I train in, itâs in that exact âD,ââ she said, referencing the arch at the top of the 18-yard box. âAnd I think the way that you most often score there is using your defenders as a shield and a little bit into negative space, and then bending the ball. I think thatâs absolutely my best way of scoring.
âAnd I think thatâs because of my strengths. I can get into the pocket with speed often. I donât actually like dribbling around defenders very much. I donât practice dribbling so Iâve got one way to get by them, but I often work on manipulating my defenders so they canât block my shot, rather than working on manipulating them so I can get by them. And I think thatâs why then I developed a shot that I can take basically with the ball under my feet and generate a lot of power, because itâs unexpected for the goalkeeper and itâs out of reach for the defender.â
Training this type of skill is very intentional. Even on a field by herself, with no active defenders, Press knows that if she takes four steps before a shot, she has failed. In a game, with real defenders, she will have been tackled or her shooting window will have closed.
Soccer is about a feeling, Press says. U.S. Soccer sends film to players after each training session so they can self-evaluate. Press says she does not look at how she performed technically, but rather what her body language said about her approach to a given training session.
She has not gone without dry spells or rough patches, from the more subtle grind of transitioning to wide roles and changing teams, to the more obvious and overt moments, such as the penalty-kick shootout miss in the 2016 Olympic quarterfinal against Sweden.
There is a notion that forwards need short memories, to not dwell on such misses. Press said she views things slightly differently, borrowing some inspiration from fellow teammates.
âI think instead of even a short memory, I always told myself since I was a young person: the more I miss, the closer I am to my next goal,â she said. âBecause itâs almost like once you play long enough, youâve missed so many times that itâs no longer emotional. I guess a certain miss in a certain moment might be, but even those, Iâve done it; Iâve missed as bad as you can miss and Iâve let the team [down]. So, life goes on and I feel like if Iâm in a game and Iâve missed an easy goal, that means the next one, Iâm gonna score. Because Iâve missed a million easy goals before, and Iâve always scored again. So, thatâs kind of how I approach it and I actually think I see this a bit in Carli [Lloyd]. If she ever misses an easy chance, she kind of becomes ravenous. She hunts and hunts because she wants to replace that memory with something else, and I try to even embody that a bit, where Iâm even more hungry in the final part of that field.â
Lloyd and Press combined for a goal against England at the 2020 SheBelieves Cup. The play was a microcosm of all these things: Press intentionally drifting into open space on the opponentâs back line before receiving the ball, opening her hips to face up to goal in one fluid motion, and firing a quick shot which caught Englandâs defenders and goalkeeper by surprise. The camera angle from behind Press showed just how much the ball bent to tuck into the side netting. ESPN announcer Sebastian Salazar screamed a phrase which quickly made its way to a t-shirt: âChristen Press, what have you done?!â
It was another spectacular goal from Press, one worthy of all the plaudits it received. What had she done? Well, it was the same she has been doing for a long time, drifting between forward positions and scoring a noteworthy goal from skills she has developed away from the public eye."

Thereâs No Business Like Show Business: Chapter 3
âFred. Howâs their acting like to you?â Jack asked in a low voice.
They were seated at the edge of the stalls. They could also see Bond from where they were, completely focused on the stage.
âIâm not an actor myself, so this is just my personal opinion â but I think theyâre awfully good,â Fred replied.
Jack gazed at the stage with a serious look in his eyes.
âI think so too. I wonât discount the fact that their sets and props look a little homemade, maybe due to a lack of budget; but when it comes to acting, each one of them is highly skilled. I can tell that the performers are all deeply familiar with the intent of the script.â
They were no theatre professionals for sure, but they possessed an eye for the true essence of their art.
The creases near Jack's eyes deepened as he quietly groaned.
âAnd best of all is that lady.â
âYeah, I thought so too,â Moran agreed. With Fred included, all of them were focused on the lone person on the stage.
As Jack had pointed out, Maya, the chairwoman, was the standout actress even among the highly-skilled members of her own company.
Although she only held the lead role in âThe Little Match Girlâ, and was relegated to supporting roles for the other stories, the delivery of her lines, the movements of her body and hands, and even the slight shifts in her gaze â each and every one of her actions was perfectly under her control. They had seen a glimpse of this when sheâd stood before her fellow company members previously, but this person on stage was completely different from the one who'd spoken to them at the entrance.
Even accounting for the fact that she had written the script herself, this level of sophistication in acting was not one which could be achieved by some run-of-the-mill actress. Moreover, the lines and pauses in the script had been carefully crafted to make it easy for the audience to relate to the stories.
From then on, the three of them enjoyed the rest of the play in silence, marvelling at her exceptional talent. Eventually, the rehearsal came to an end.
âââThat concludes our performance. Thank you very much for coming.â
After her closing words, the company lined up on stage, silently waiting for Bondâs comments. While there had not been any flashy moments during the performance, almost all of them had sweat on their foreheads. Each breath they took revealed the depth of their concentration.
ââŚâŚâŚâŚâ
For a short while, Bond stared at the stage without saying a word. Growing uneasy at the silence, the company members lowered their gazes slightly.
After what seemed like an eternity, Bond cleared his throat, and adjusted his posture. Seeing that, the company members straightened their backs.
âââIf I were to summarise my thoughts, I think your acting has already reached a high standard. Iâm sure all of you have put in much time and effort to achieve this.â
Their faces beamed at his compliment. But Bond would not allow them to be satisfied with that alone.
He rose from his seat.
âBut thatâs also why some bad habits have stood out to me. For example, the witch in âThe Little Mermaidâ: there were times when your movements were too exaggerated. I know that you wanted to emphasise her sinister nature, but the way you did so may turn off the audience.â
âY-YesâŚâŚâ
The actress whoâd been singled out hung her head, perhaps out of shock. But Bond ignored this, and pointed to another woman.
âNow, you played the main character in âThe Red Shoesâ. I watched your steps after putting on the shoes â have you properly studied dance? Itâs true that even some stage professionals may think that itâs alright to just mimic the real thing, but if you really want to make your performance more authentic, you must take the time to learn how to do it properly. Your audience will not be satisfied unless you show them a level of skill that will astonish even people in that profession.â
âUnderstood!â she responded with vigour.
âNext up is you: the way you project your voiceâââ
Then Bond singled out each of the performers in turn, highlighting in detail what they needed to work on. He only needed to watch their play once to spot areas for improvement at such a fine level of detail â his eye for the arts gave them all a sense of the former professionalâs brilliance.
At last, Bond finished addressing every member of the company. But he then swept his gaze over the entire theatre.
âIn additionâŚâŚ this isnât your fault at all, but your success today was only possible due to the small size of this theatre,â he said, with some distress. âIf we were in a bigger venue, the hall would be wider and deeper to accommodate the larger audience. In other words, Iâm afraid that with your current performance, your voices simply would not reach the entire audience.â
Maya paled.
âSo, in order to accommodate the size of the venueâŚâŚâ
âYes. The worst-case scenario would be that you have to rework the entire play. By the way, when is the opening night?â
âTâTwo weeks later.â
The entire room was enveloped in silence. Even from where they were seated, Moran and the others felt the weight of their despair: all the hard work they had put in thus far, might just have amounted to nothing.
Even Bond, who had revealed this harsh reality, dropped his gaze and grimaced.
âWell, there are a fair number of productions that focus only on the stage, and do not account for the size of the audience, so you may not have to changeâââ
âââNo, weâll do it.â
Maya sharply interrupted his proposal.
âYouâve seen how I am; Iâve always been timid and hesitantâŚâŚ but theatre is the one thing I will never compromise on. Especially now â this is a rare opportunity for us. For my fellow company members, for the people whoâve supported us this far, I want to show them something Iâve put every effort into making.â
ââŚâŚâŚâŚâ
At her words, the rest of the company nodded in silence.
Even with the actual performance only two weeks away, Maya and her company had steeled their hearts and chosen to start again from scratch. That stubborn determination surprised Bond, and even Moran and the rest.
âUâUmâŚâŚ Mr Bond, I actually have something I wish to discuss with youâŚâŚâ
Out of the blue, Mayaâs voice had grown soft.
âUâUm, if it is alright with you, just for the next two weeks, could you sit in during our rehearsals? AâAh, actually, just whenever you have the time would be fineâŚâŚâ
Bond chuckled.
Even after being told about all those problems, they refused to stand down, and even continued to ask for help. Their mental fortitude sparked hope in him, and he couldnât help but let out a grin.
Bond shot the party in the stalls a questioning look. Moran looked to Jack and Fred in turn, before giving him a thumbs-up.
With that, the former flames of passion within Bond burned even hotter. He faced the company members with a determined grin.
âââOkay. But I will be especially tough on you all, so be prepared.â
Then, he called out to Fred.
âFred-kun. I would like your help as well â is that alright with you?â
âUnderstood,â he replied, standing up.
âBond, Iâm always happy to teach knife-wielding.â
âAnd you can always ask me about gun handling.â
âNow that would be helpful,â Bond smiled at Jack and Moranâs jests, then turned back to the stage.
âWell then, everyone â for the next two weeks, letâs do our best together.â
⌠⌠⌠âŚ
âDuring a performance, you must be always be aware of three things: the audience, the other actors, and yourself. If the feeling of being âwatchedâ becomes too strong for you, first direct your attention within yourself. Then, you will be able to focus on your acting once again.â
âI donât advocate the idea of getting into a role. In the end, acting is just a skill: what you should focus on instead is how you are moving.â
âAlthough an effective way of bringing out emotions is to dredge up your past memories, I would advise you to avoid that. Recent memories are too concrete and vivid â if you must do so, use memories from your distant past. And be careful: if you frequently immerse yourself in negative emotions, you will hurt yourself on a spiritual level too.â
In a small theatre in Whitechapel, Bondâs instructions came forth ceaselessly.
He stood on stage together with the company members: carefully reviewing their movements, even acting them out himself as an example on occasion, and putting in every effort to raise the level of their production.
The remaining two weeks were short, but with their foundations already strong to begin with, Maya and her company steadily honed their acting skills to perfection.
One week left until the show. His work as an instructor had finally ended for the day, and he let out a sigh as he sat in the stalls to catch his breath.
âGood work today â fancy a sip?â
Having watched the proceedings from the stalls, Moran handed him a bottle of water. It was a beer bottle â very Moran-like â and Bond accepted it with a smile.
âThanks, Moran-kun.â
Bond gulped down a single mouthful of water.
âSo, howâs the play going?â
âAt first I thought we would be hard-pressed for time, but they truly exceeded my expectations. I think we might just make it. âŚâŚScratch that, we will make it.â
Moran nodded.
âThatâs right. And they seem to be well-liked by the residents around here. I really hope they can pull it off.â
As Moran gazed off into the distance, a thought just occurred to Bond. He cocked his head.
âCome to think of it, you really didnât have to tag along with me all this time, you know?â
Ever since the day Bond had agreed to lend his support to the company, his other colleagues had stopped over from time to time to cheer him on. However, Moran had made it a point to come to the theatre every day without fail.
Moran scratched his cheek in embarrassment.â¨
ââŚâŚWell, itâs not like I have anything else to do when there arenât any missions. As a senior member of this organisation, Iâm just here to see how my junior works.â
âEven though youâve been skipping out on chores at the mansion?â
âDâDammit, I told you before: I always do my share of the work, you know.â
Bond had said that half-jokingly, but his words flustered Moran nevertheless. It seemed he had not been entirely wrong about that.
Bond returned his gaze to the stage.
ââŚâŚThank you, Moran-kun,â he said quietly.
âHmm? Didnât you already say that earlier?â
âThis one means something different,â he said, with a hint of mischief in his voice. Moran raised an eyebrow in bemusement, but the presence of a caring senior alone warmed Bondâs heart.
Just then, they heard the sound of the theatre doors opening.
As the two men turned to look, they saw a portly middle-aged man with a magnificent moustache standing at the entrance.
Maya hurriedly bowed in his direction. âTâThank you so much for your help thus far! What brings you all the way here?â
From her formal manner, it seemed this was the very noble who had asked them to stage the opening act for his theatre.
âAh, youâve been working hard, I see,â he said as he stroked his moustache, a big smile on his face.
âYes; with your assistance, weâve been able to prepare for the performance in time. Iâm sure the audience will be satisfied withâââ
âWell, about that.â
The man interrupted Maya, still all smiles.
âââYour performance has been cancelled.â
âWhat?â
No one could believe their ears.
Her expression brimmed with confusion.
âU-Um, what do you meanâŚâŚ?â
âWhat does it mean? Just pretend our conversation back then didnât happen. Thatâs all.â
The man made another simple pronouncement, then smiled as if nothing was wrong.
âHonestly, itâs just as well that this has happened, since Iâve also been troubled over your debut. So what Iâm saying is, your company doesnât have to turn up. Thatâs alright with you, isnât it?â
The entire company was still in a state of shock. Then, Bond addressed the man directly.
âNow hold on just a moment. What do you mean, you were troubled? Then why did you ask them to perform? Whatâs more, isnât it a little late to cancel the performance at this juncture?â
Hearing that, the man sighed in displeasure.
âWho are you, anyway? Someone connected to this company? Iâm not happy to be asked so many questions at once.â
âThen Iâll summarise it for you. If you were going to cancel the performance so easily, why bother requesting Maya and her company to perform anyway?â
At Bondâs question, the nobleman shrugged his shoulders.
âWell, thatâs simple. I just felt like it.â
ââŚâŚWhat?â
Those shocking words froze him to the core.
âIâd heard about a reputable theatre company in the slums. Since thereâs this notion of noblesse oblige anyway, I thought a performance would be a good topic for conversation and approached them. But then I grew to realise that the thought of poor people stepping onto the sacred stage of an official theatre just didnât sit well with me. So yesterday, I finally decided to put an end to this madness.â
âHow could youâŚâŚâ
He had asked Mayaâs company to perform on a whim, and then cancelled their act on a selfish whim as well. And this was all decided just âyesterdayâ. Even though they had been putting in every effort into their play.
The nobleman continued.
âThatâs all I had to say. You poor folk are living off the graces of the nobility, so be grateful that I even bothered to come all this way to talk to you. Now that Iâm finished here, Iâll be leaving. The smell here is simply an assault on my senses.â
Right before he walked out, the man spat out one last line.
âWell, at least you all had a nice dream, didnât you?â
ââŚâŚâŚ!â
A violent rage surged within Bond. Somehow, he managed to grit his teeth and hold himself back. If he were to retaliate right now, he would be inviting unnecessary reprisal on Maya and her company rather than himself. So all he could do was look daggers at the noblemanâs back as he left.
The theatre was enveloped in a mournful silence. Everyone seemed to have lost their verve, and no one uttered a word. Bond was shaking with frustration.
Amidst the heavy atmosphere, just one man â Moran â gazed upon the situation with composure.
Finally, Maya, the chairwoman, mumbled in a thin voice.
âUm, Iâm so sorry. I think, Iâm not feeling too wellâŚâŚâ
Then, with a hollow expression, she headed to the dressing room, her footsteps shaky.

Thinking back to the earlier volumes, isn't it weird that Ozpin either 1) didn't notice Jaune faked his transcripts (imagine if he was a Salem agent) or 2) decided to just trust this kid with fake transcripts when he is so paranoid that not even his inner circle has his complete trust?
I've always worked under the assumption that he had to have known. Even just ignoring the unlikely event that Jaune managed to secure transcripts that were that persuasive and Ozpin never followed up with/realized that Jaune didn't attend a previous school as he claimed (the huntsmen world seems to be a small one, increasing the likelihood of Ozpin hearing about potential new students, and Jaune couldn't have passed the test Blake, Ren, and Nora did for those students with unconventional educations prior to Beacon), he also just acts like he knows and is keeping it quiet. Ozpin is not at all surprised by Jaune's lack of knowledge regarding landing strategies, or his genuine fear about the initiation. Some like Ruby may be nervous about teams, but no one else is scared because to a Beacon level huntsmen there's nothing to be scared of - this stuff is easy-peasy. A guy asks for a parachute to safely land? That would have immediately tipped Ozpin off if he didn't already know. Plus, the person in these scenes who does pick up on these discrepancies, Glynda, is the one Ozpin ignores. "Oh, you think Mr. Arc isn't ready for Beacon? Haha, no reason to address that little observation..."
He had to have known, so the real question is why he'd allow this. You're right that it was a security risk, but it appears far riskier in a post-Fall story. Yes, of course Ozpin always knew about the threat Salem posed even if the audience did not, but the Fall wasn't just a shock to us and the other characters. I think people forget that it was absolutely a shock to Ozpin too. As far as he was aware, things were going swimmingly. It's that wonderful time of peace! Yeah, he starts hearing reports of enemy movements around the same time that Jaune was allowed in (meaning that any worry wouldn't have started until he'd already taken a risk on Jaune), but no one could have predicted that within a few months the entire school would be overrun with grimm. Meanwhile, telling people about Salem has been a known risk for at least several lifetimes. Letting Jaune into the school without credentials is only perceived as such a big risk after we've watched Cinder pull that exact stunt: sneaking into Beacon as a student and helping to destroy it from within. But, given the knowledge everyone had in Volumes 1-3, it doesn't surprise me that Ozpin would see one action as a STAGGERINGLY bigger risk than the other. He doesn't tell his inner circle about Salem because every time he tells people about Salem they drop the fight, betray him to her, or fall into such despair that they're functionally no longer allies - as the group beautifully demonstrated when the secrets came to light. Jaune is just... taking a chance on a kid with potential. One is a proven risk within a war that impacts all of Remnant; the other is only at that same level of risk if Ozpin were truly paranoid and spiraling when it came to imagining the worst possible scenario for every situation. What if this bumbling kid is secretly an intelligent spy sent to undermine my school from within, despite every possible proof to the contrary?
But it's details like this that make me roll my eyes so hard at the "Ozpin doesn't trust anyone" rhetoric of both the show and the fandom. Not trusting everyone with everything - because different people are more likely to be trustworthy or not; different pieces of information have the ability to do more damage than others - is not the same thing as not trusting, period. Ozpin, like Ironwood, has never been paranoid. Everything he fears is true, proven again and again across multiple lifetimes. It's not paranoia when people are literally betraying you left and right. Yet despite this, Ozpin extends a shocking amount of trust. It's as you say, he does let this unknown kid try his hand at being a huntsmen. He lets a former White Fang member into Jaune's class, allowing her to hide her status as a faunus the whole while, outright telling her that she can keep her secrets until she's ready to share them. He previously allowed two bandits into his school - who later revealed they'd come with the explicit purpose of learning how to murder huntsmen!! - and despite being betrayed by one he still keeps her brother as his second in command. He trusted his inner circle with everything but the secret that has screwed him over time and time again. He trusted a bunch of nobody students when they randomly showed up at his safehouse, demanding to be a part of this battle. He trusted them again despite the horrific way they put his trauma on full display. And then hit him. Screamed at him. Ignored him for months on end. He trusts them so much that when four of them came back with Emerald he didn't even question it. This 14yo boy I'm inhabiting wants to risk everything by "trusting love" in the woman who, just a few hours ago, was trying to help Cinder murder our Maiden? Lol yeah sure, why not.
Ozpin extends an extraordinary amount of trust given his circumstances. That's canon to my mind. What's ridiculous is that the comparatively few times he's held back have been blown into this inaccurate image of him being paranoid, or so manipulative that he refuses to allow anyone else agency through information. But Ozpin trusting others 99% of the time is the part of the story that has always made sense. Trusting others with caution during such a dangerous war is not - and should not - be criticized for this extent, especially when the other option presented is pure foolishness. Which, frankly, is where I think Oscar is at, surviving his blind faith in someone like Hazel purely because the plot bends to accommodate that. It also remains a strange theme in the face of Ruby's current characterization. Ozpin, according to the show, is flawed because he didn't trust love... yet this is the same volume when Ruby tells all of Remnant that Ironwood can't be trusted. No explanation, no attempt to reach out, just a black and white dismissal that he is an enemy now, full stop. And we can't even contextualize that with, "Well, Ironwood is too far gone to ever trust again. There are some cases where love just isn't enough" when we redeemed both Emerald and Hazel within episodes of each other. The PTSD riddled former-ally doing horrific things in the name of saving at least some of his kingdom is too far gone, but the guy who murdered the majority of Mistral's huntsmen, works directly for Salem, and has spent his two major appearances trying to kill/torture a kid is not? Yeeeaahh. That's really absurd to my mind. At the end of the day, RWBY's themes of trust are just fundamentally flawed. There is no solid foundation to work from and no continuity across the series, let alone across different characters. Ozpin trusted Jaune, but is said to be too untrusting because the show is basing "trust" on whichever characters it likes most in a given moment. It is, again, why we get a "Ruby will save the day because she's so trusting. More trusting than Ozpin ever was" while she is, in that exact moment, keeping these secrets from Ironwood. Or themes of Ruby uniting the world... while she explicitly says, "But not that guy." Any compelling story about trust we might have gotten died the day the group stole everything from Ozpin, punished him for things outside of his control, cut him out of their lives until the plot forced them to work together again, and the story never once went, "Hmm. Maybe our supposedly trusting, forgiving heroes shouldn't have done all that."

Date anon again! Have you posted your ocs?? I don't think I've seen them srry if someone already asked about them!
Hey date anon! Thank you so much for your ask about my OCs, it means a lot to me that people are interested in them! I had this laying around in my inbox for an era and a half, but I thought now would be the perfect time to release them!
If anyone wants to learn more about these babes, just ask! I put a lot of time and love into them.
HAPPY 150+ FOLLOWERS, EVERYONE!
My (Main) JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo OCs!
Daphne Libertina (she/her)
Say HIII GIRLIEEE to my first and most developed Vento Aureo OC, Daphne! Sheâs your classic Y2K aesthetic airhead archetype. While designing her, I found Bimbo TikTok and fell in love with the aesthetic and the ideology. Because of this, a lot of the ditzy behaviour I worked into Daphneâs personality and design is inspired by Chrissy Chlapeckaâs New Age Bimbo. Sheâs kind of a hyperfeminine vessel for whatever âgirlyâ sentiments I have as well. Iâm not that outwardly feminine in my daily life (I have a gender crisis every second week, subscribe for more!), so Daph was an experiment in expressing it elsewhere. This resulted in a newfound obsession with the colour pink and a renewed love for characters like Elle Woods and Cher Horowitz.
You might know her from my absolute banger of an art debut, the âNectarâ post*. Her besties include @blackevermoreâs Chiara, @amarettocoffeeâs Gina, and @bucciaratis-titty-windowâs Strelitzia. Love ya galz, xoxo!
Stand: Scarlet Letter (Namesake: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne [Book]). Alternatively**, Teen Idle (Namesake: Teen Idle by MARINA [Song])
*DISCLAIMER: She does not actually do⌠that. Even if @bucciaratis-titty-window says otherwise. Donât listen to her. (That being said, take a wild guess who I ship her with.)
**âWhy does she have two stand names?â Her stand was developed as SL but TI adheres to the music reference stand criteria. That being said, itâs a creative choice that I use SL regardless. Both pieces of media play a huge part in her foundation.
Capriccio âCremaâ Solitario (they/them)
Described often by my friends as a feral noodle, Capriccioâcodename Crema*âis my compulsory âHey, I kinda wanna bang literally all of La Squadra???â self insert that gives me intense gender envy. Capri started out as a joke character, as their old name was âLa Squadra Thotâ or âLSTâ for short (take from that what you will). This was eventually shortened to âLa Thotraâ ⌠until I gave them a tragic backstory and a real personality. That being said, their base function was still present in their later design: they were La Squadra Esecuzioniâs stress toy for a little while, but eventually settled down with two of my favourite assassin degenerates and holds their own as a valuable member of the team.
Stand: Mindless Self Indulgence/MSI (Namesake: Mindless Self Indulgence [Band])
*I have a headcanon that La Squadraâs ânamesâ are all codenames, and that they have perfectly reasonableâif not slightly referentialânormal names.
Lucetta âLuluâ Vitali (she/her/they/them)
Lucetta is probably the closest OC I have to a genuine self insertâsheâs the most like me out of all of my JoJo OCs, anyway. Funnily enough, she doesnât have that much development outside of her relationship dynamic with her long-term boyfriend*. Iâm still trying to figure out how to translate all of meâor at least the key parts of meâinto her and how she lives. Stay tuned for that. For now, Iâll bet that sheâs working an entry level position in the writing industry, a projection of my future (hopefully).
Dierdre Darling (she/her)
Stand: N/Aâjust a regular olâ person.
*For the record, I'm actually currently single & happy that way. Lulu, however, is dating her high school sweetheart. Guess who!
Mild gore warning on this one, she's... special.
Dierdre came to me in a moment of exercise delirium while listening to Blood Eater by Mom, and was inspired by the way zombies work in the TV show iZombie. Well, thatâs how her stand works, anyway. She began Araki-style, power first and character second. Sheâs a shrill, unhinged woman with an insatiable craving for human flesh, blood and bone. Sheâs kinda like Secco, but worse. And yes, those teeth are purposefully, cosmetically sharpened. Also, a Unita Speciale member. Ask @bucciaratis-titty-window who babysits her.
Sheâs not exactly âwithâ anyone right now, but the joke at the beginning of her development was that sheâd fallen hopelessly in love with a man who could create the rot and decay of time before her very eyes⌠oh, did I mention sheâs fascinated by decay?
Stand: Living Dead Girl (Namesake: Living Dead Girl by Rob Zombie [Song])

@panharmonium - this post is partly serious ponderings and partly just me having some lighthearted fun, so apologies once again in advance if the tone is all over the place, but you mentioned in our conversation that you feel "less settled" about how Yamato feels about/views romance and how it relates to him personally, and - big surprise! - once more I'm in the same boat as you. You might not be as interested in discussing this or might not have much to say about it since we're not given as much "evidence" in comparison to Kakashi, and if so that's totally okay, but I got to thinking about it idly and then I got sucked in and went back and referenced some relevant episodes and now my brain is Intrigued, haha!
Of course, what I said before about my 'default' being essentially "just about all characters are a-spec until distinctly substantiated not to be" holds true in Yamato's case as well, but at least with Kakashi we've seen on a few occasions how he behaves when someone shows romantic interest in him; we get a pretty good sense where his head is at in those circumstances. There hasn't really been a similar situation with Yamato, he's much more of a 'blank slate' in that regard. He went from being an experiment in a giant test tube, to being a member of a covert organization where he had no name of his own, no past or future, no life beyond his assigned missions, and then spends the rest of his life up until very recently in the slightly-less-secluded-but-still-covert sister branch of the previous organization where he now has a bit more personal experience with things like friendship, but his life is still mostly spent doing things like assassinating people, gathering secret intel, spywork, etc. I can't really imagine Danzo sitting down all the orphaned or otherwise 'stray' kids that grew up in the Foundation to discuss "the birds and the bees" with them. đ So my assumption is most of them had to make do with picking up what they could from any of their older peers on the topics of sex education and dating advice? Since Danzo was apparently still considering recruiting Kakashi when he was around 19-20 (and after he ordered him to be killed a few years before that, the nerve!), it appears that not all Foundation ANBU grew up there/had some scraps of personal lives outside Foundation headquarters? But obviously I would guess very little romance/dating if any was tolerated under Danzo's watch.
So then, cue me picturing 14-year-old!Tenzo asking Kakashi stuff like, "Hey, senpai? How do you know if you have a crush on someone?" and Kakashi just replies, "Beats me, kid." and pats him on the shoulder.
What if--and this is a very silly idea, forgive me--what if Kakashi first picked up an icha icha novel as a way to, like, find examples to more easily explain romantic matters to Tenzo, who can then figure out for himself how he feels about it all? And then Kakashi, who we saw was already a bookworm as a kid, gets drawn into the plots because they're light and frivolous and the opposite of the dark, unpleasant, life-or-death lifestyle of the ANBU.
What REALLY got my mind going down a rabbit hole was when I remembered how Yamato reacted to Sakura trying to convince Naruto she loved him now instead of Sasuke. Going back and watching that scene again, Yamato has one of the stronger shocked reactions/expressions when Sakura makes her declaration, and once the surprise wears off a little, he's still very taken aback and there's even some consternation when he questions, "What is going on?!?" and Kakashi has to physically hold him back from intervening. Yamato is continuously caught off guard by all the revelations made by Sakura and then Sai, with a marked difference in how he accepts the news that Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro deliver to them immediately afterwards. And then, he doesn't even get to be there to witness the confrontation with Sasuke and everything that happens and is said there! He only hears the abridged version. So it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if right before Yamato leaves with Naruto on their "secret S-rank mission", he quietly takes Kakashi aside and asks, "Are... are the kids gonna be alright? Sakura just tried to kill the person she loves. And I'm still a bit ticked off he ditched me again, but Naruto did just had a panic attack so bad that he fell unconscious from it! I tried to get him to eat some porridge, but he didn't have any appetite and he said he was having nightmares about Sasuke. And now he apparently seems okay with fighting Sasuke again, even if it means they both die? What do I do if we run out of ideas for ways for Naruto to train or other things to do stuck on a boat for weeks and Naruto gets so bored he starts thinking about stuff and he ends up upset again because the girl he likes lied to him and agrees with everyone else that Sasuke needs to be treated like an enemy? I'm not trained for this, senpai!" And Kakashi is reminded again of how much he regrets trying to reassure Sakura everything would be okay after Naruto's and Sasuke's first fight on top of the hospital, and all he can say is, "Well, if it's any consolation, you can't do any worse than me at comforting crying, heartbroken subordinates." And that's the last thing they talk about the last time they saw each other? They're both doing all they can to help and protect these kids but they both feel so inadequate on a number of levels and it makes me so sad! So then I try to put a humorous spin on it... đ
Anyway, I'm not trying to portray Yamato as this poor innocent baby when it comes to how romance works, but it struck me that he probably hasn't had much opportunity to experience much in the romantic realm, and then he's thrust head-first into substituting for his personal hero and not only is that first mission a disaster, but he's now surrounded by a bunch of pining, angsty teenagers! Maybe it's a good thing he might've not heard that the reason why Naruto completely lost control of the Nine Tails during Pain's attack and he wasn't there to stop him from transforming, was because Hinata confessed her love to Naruto and then was very nearly killed in front of him?
#my thoughts in this post seemed more interesting and funny in my head so sorry if this sounds dumb or reductive or unimportant#we can just ignore it if so#but yeah I'm perfectly happy to see him as aroace too but I know that it's mostly something that hasn't been addressed yet#I mean yukimi asked him if he wanted to run away together with her which is usually framed as a romantic thing e.g. running away to elope?#but I don't think that was the intention there since she was projecting her little brother onto Tenzo#and Tenzo was mainly confused by her in general as it was and he was all of ten or eleven years old so...#tenzo#yamato#kakashi 'n' tenzo#team seven#naruto

A Motherâs Intuition
AO3
Maddie Fenton prides herself on being a woman of science. A woman full of reasoning and logic who has spent her entire career working on showing her credibility by proving that ghosts exist; not only that, but to show the dangers that they hold to the living. After so many years of being mocked and belittled she finally got her big break with that ghost portal. Once ghosts started coming into Amity Park, she knew she had something tangible that would shake the foundations of the scientific community that have been perceived as Law. Everyone would know that there exists a space that these laws donât apply (in more ways than one). She and Jack would finally get their brilliance recognized, and her children could finally look at their parents with pride knowing that theyâre the first to discover and pioneer this new branch of science never before studied by mankind.
With that being said, Maddie was the one who always brought a more realistic approach to the ideas Jack came up with. They made a good team like that, covering each otherâs blind spots to the best of their abilities. Maddie was seen as the rational one, less emotionally swayed compared to her jovial and at times overly enthusiastic husband. Thatâs not a bad thing really, since it keeps Maddie grounded in not becoming too absorbed in observing at a microscopic level and he forces her to step back and relook at her project with new eyes with a wider perspective. This is all to say that Maddie is an observant person. Her profession relies on her ability to analyze and being able to report and reflect on those observations.
All this needs to be mentioned because Maddie has been feeling strange lately. Well, perhaps lately isnât the right word. This is a feeling that has existed within her for awhile, itâs just become impossible to ignore the longer it stays. This is a blind spot that has grown too large to push aside.
Dread is one way to describe this feeling. Anxiety is another. At its worst peak, paranoia might be more applicable.
Right now Maddie is sitting at her dinner table with her family. Itâs a Sunday night, she had ordered pizza earlier in the evening because the radioactive hot dogs are holding yesterdayâs leftovers hostage. Itâs a normal evening for the Fentons all things considered.
Except for the slightly shaky hands, which is strange for a woman who has skilled precision with a scalpel. Except for the pounding in Maddieâs chest, her pulse has been quickening the longer theyâre having dinner, and sheâs starting to hear that same pulse pounding behind her ears. Except for the slight chill that never leaves her despite sitting next to her husband who runs so warm he might as well be a personal heater.
Thereâs the tightening of her chest that leaves her struggling to breathe properly. It feels as if at any moment she may have to start gasping for breath like her sister Alicia used to as a kid before she got an inhaler to treat her asthma.
Ultimately, these are all the signs Maddie feels when sheâs scared. Itâs been a while since sheâs felt true fear that wasnât outweighed by adrenaline and excitement. She usually can hold her own against any human and sheâs smart to never fight a ghost at close range. She canât remember the last time she had felt helpless enough to fear like this.
As a woman who is a master at martial arts, sheâs had a lot of past experience in her training going up against powerful opponents. There were certain opponents (especially in her early years of training) that made her feel like she was prey, that if she lost her focus for a moment, she would be pulverized. This is the same feeling only a thousand times worse.
Maddie has been trying to deny the connections sheâs been weaving since the first prick of nervousness first reached her. She was a woman of science, she needed evidence to support her conclusion; correlation does not equal causation. However, her martial arts background has told her to trust your instincts; itâs a survival trait warning of a potential danger. The conflict of these two perspectives have been arguing in her head about the odd common thread with these spikes of anxiety.
These feelings only seem to appear whenever Danny was around.
It was such a silly observation at first, more of an offhand thought. But as time went on, and her nerves were worsening, the thought stayed with her in the back of her mind.
Maddieâs mind tries to be rational about the ordeal, trying to convince herself that these feelings of anxiety could be due to stress, or some effect of the ghost portal. The fact that something primal is screaming at her that her son âthe boy who currently has a piece of pepperoni stuck to the side of his lip and is pouting at Jazzâis a threat to her livelihood is what worries her.
Could he be possessed by a ghost? No, thatâs ridiculous; his eyes are blue, he canât be possessed. They look a little brighter than normal. Thatâs the kitchen lighting, Danny is NOT involved in this.
It feels like it has to be ghost related. This feeling of dread is common with several of the ghosts that have appeared in Amity Park before. Sheâs noticed that the more powerful ones are more likely to cause this instinctual feeling compared to the little ghost blobs who only cause a shiver to your spine once physical contact is made.
ââright Mom?â, Maddie jumps a bit and looks up to realize that Jazz was looking directly at her. She notices that the pizza box is empty, and the tableâs been cleared, except for her own plate. Was she out of it for that long?
âSorry honey, I didnât hear what you said. Could you repeat the question?â. She tried to offer a smile, but she could tell looked more like a grimace. Jack was looking at her worriedly, but he knew better than to push her to talk in front of the kids. Jazz looked back with a soft smile, but her brows were furrowed.
Maddie didnât look in Dannyâs direction.
âI was just saying I should have the leftover slice of pizza for tomorrow instead of Danny because I have seniority rights, right?â
Maddie blinked at Jazz for a moment before recollecting herself and standing up from her seat and moving to the sink to wash the dishes, forcefully ignoring the back of her mind screaming at her to run as far away as she can from here and never look back.
âNow you two, thereâs no need to fight like that. Why donât I just give you both some lunch money for tomorrow and weâll call it even?â She smiled at Jazz, subtly angling herself so her back wasnât facing towards Danny and kept him in her peripheral vision.
She doesnât want to think of why she did that.
--
Later that night, Maddie couldnât sleep. She managed to convince Jack that she was feeling better after dinner, and now sheâs wide awake trying to remember why that fear felt so familiar. She recognized the unease that only comes from being in close contact with a ghost. Itâs the same feeling that lingered in her system after having a ghost possess her; thereâs a specific rolling in her stomach that comes from it. The feelings she got during dinner tonight felt like a specific ghost, something about it felt familiar but she couldnât put her finger on it.
When she finally went to sleep, she was restless with dreams of sharp bright blue eyes, looming shadows that suffocated her, and sweet awkward smiles that slowly turned into menacing and haunting grins.
--
The rest of the week had been a pretty regular one. Jack and Maddie had spent most of the week building some new weapons that could help capture Phantom once and for all. Because of this, they had been eating in their lab. If Maddie felt relief at using her work as a shield to avoid family dinner, thatâs her secret to keep.
The week had been quiet with no battles or major ghost sightings until a massive ghost battle broke out between Phantom and another one of the reoccurring ghosts on Friday. Skulker was the name of the ghost if what she had overheard from her sonar dish on the family RV was correct. It was all the way across town. Jack was behind the wheel, and Maddie was checking over the new prototype they had been working on all week that would hopefully weaken a ghostâs powers. They were hoping that Phantom could be their first test subject.
As they were about halfway to the battle, Maddie suddenly got a prickly feeling in her neck. She was well acquainted with that feeling when nearing ghosts, so she dismissed it as usual. But it got worse the closer they reached their destination. Her body slowly began to tense up, more, her breaths were becoming shallower, and her mouth had suddenly run very dry.
No⌠it canât beâŚ
There they were in front of Skulker and Phantom and all Maddie could do was tense up in terror and barely stop herself from letting out a whimper. This feels too familiar, he feels likeâŚ
Phantom suddenly crashes on top of their windshield, he groans and begins to lift himself off the hood of the RV when for a brief moment, his eyes meet Maddieâs. He sends a sheepish smile and begins to fly up towards Skulker, immediately striking him down with an ectoblast.
Meanwhile, Maddie feels all the blood drain from her face and she feels her eyes begin to fill up with tears. Jack is yelling about that darn ghost damaging his RV, but she can barely focus. She recognized the feeling now. The interaction between the two of them didnât even last a minute, yet it is staying with her all the same.
The smile Phantom gave reminded her of a black-haired boy who would get caught staying up late looking at his telescope. A boy who would give her that same smile whenever he was confronted about skipping class and missing his assignments. She sees that smile every day in her own home.
It looked so odd, having that smile come from a boy with bright white hair, and eyes that glowed toxic green. The smile was sharper, with incisors that were just short of becoming fangs. But it was still recognizable.
She can no longer deny it, Phantom and Danny are connected. Danny even leaves her with the same sense of terror and fear that only a ghost as powerful as Phantom could do. It feels more potent with Phantom; looking him in the eye for that moment almost made her scream bloody murder.
Jack was never as attuned to the emotional effects that ghosts brought on due to his natural bravery and confidence (she has a theory about his family bloodline having adopted some traits that could block out these senses of fear which leads them to being better ghost hunters). However, even Jack had once mentioned that he felt unnerved by Phantom, which says a lot about the power that child ghost must hold. But to think that powerful monster is somehow connected to her son was a situation she never would have considered. Was he possessed?
When did it happen? Was it around the time that Maddie first began feeling unnerved?
How didnât you notice? The back of her mind whispered to her. Youâre his mother, arenât you?
The weight of her realization begins to set it. The burden of fearing her son with no tangible reason for doing so. Her own neglect and obliviousness about missing this massive part of her sonâs life fills her with guilt. Suddenly the weapon in her hand, ready to be used against Phantom (Danny?) makes her nauseous.
She feels her body beginning to shut down and go into autopilot. Maddie dazedly notices that she and her husband are parked in the middle of a street, in easy range to get blasted or crushed, or incinerated or possessed by these ghosts. She is in no condition to fight.
She feels a little hysterical thinking about her own safety when her son (or some possessed version of him) is out there fighting a ghost after literally crashing into an RV with military grade protection.
âJack, we should go homeâ, Maddie hoarsely interrupts her husbandâs tangent.
He looks like he was about to protest until he saw his wifeâs bloodshot eyes, holding back tears and white as a sheet. Without further prompting, he turned the car around and as soon as the stiffening fear had melted away from Maddieâs shoulders did she finally allow the tears to fall.

TALK TO US ABOUT MASS EFFECT I HAVE BEEN AN INSANE MASS EFFECT/SHAKARIAN TRASH PERSON SINCE 20-FUCKING-11 AND LEMME TELL YOU THOSE FEELINGS HAVENOT TARNISHED A SINGLE FRACTION IN THOSE TEN YEARS OH MY GOOOOOOODDDSSSS!!!!!!!
I DEMAND A PLAY-BY-PLAY UP TO THE MINUTE OF YOUR REACTIONS TO EVERYTHING!!!!
you are so valid and I totally see why everyone I've ever mentioned it to loves the hell out of it
aksdjlsdfj I meannnn if you want to hear my rambling about it then hell yeah
Okay, gonna put this below the cut to save everyone else XD also- since I'm not leaving this Mass Effect obsession anytime soon, if you're not interested in seeing occasional posts about it, please feel free to block the tag "night plays ME"~
(mild spoilers ahead??)
((also for real I mean it when I say this is rambling as hell lol, apologies and no stress if absolute no one reads all this))
OKAY SO Mass Effect 1-
Stars help me, I was honestly hooked right from the start?? Like even in Legendary Edition (the combined trilogy just re-released in one "can play it on one system + minor improvements", for anyone who doesn't know) where it's smoothed out, of course it's obvious that ME1 is a decade old... but the foundation for these relationships are all there and gods I love them already.
Like - Kaiden right off the top is a delightful good fightin lad, what the hell. I've heard that he's viewed as 'bland' by a good portion of the fan community but I dunno, he's a delight and even more complex by the time 2 rolls around and you encounter him on Horizon, it was honestly Ashley I was way more meh about - mostly because before you can learn about her family history/etc, she comes off as hella xenophobic and I was immediately offended for my growing space family that she didn't like/trust all the aliens around, pfff.
(she gets redeemed a bit through further actions/evolving thoughts, but I thought in retrospect it was a bummer that they didn't flip the order there, give her a chance to be liked before the complicating factor of being so rude about aliens >:c that then she could grow from... ah well. Apparently she has a good arc but uh, let's just say I chose Kaiden at the "key junction" in the latter part of the game so I won't be seeing anymore of Ashley uh... anytime soon, haha.)
Garrus??? Is??????? The ABSOLUTE best???????????
I liked him from the start, I'm always a bit of a sucker for a rogue-detective "the system won't bring this bastard to justice, so I've got to" type and all their moral shadiness XD But he just gets better, honestly, and where I'm at in ME2 (right before the Reaper IFF mission, as of typing this, with everyone's loyalty!) I am only digging myself deeper into this hole-
-*wheezing* okay anyways -
Wrex is AMAZING I love fightin' middle-aged krogan bastard, gods. Liara is great too, I'm a sucker for a wlw relationship (playing fem!Shepard, so) - buuuut I'll admit she's a bit more one-note in ME1. Last week while I was still on ME1 I remember hearing (while trying to dodge spoilers) that her arc is really good, though. I think they leaned a little hard on the 'innocent but sexy' sterteotype on her (so despite the yikes aspect of a few of the things I've learned in ME2, lol, I actually really like the complexity that's been added to her character.)
Saved Liara first, so by the time I got to Noveria and had the standoff with Benezia there was the chance to have emotions over Liara having to face her TwT and of course, I made the questionable but quality decision to free Queen Rachni heheh. no ragrets
More than a blow-by-blow of my choices though I totally wanna take the chance to say that even in the mild jankiness of ME1 (goddammit, the Mako.... please..... please just go up this impossible cliff I just want to resource hunt-) the way that the lore, both obvious/key to main plot and the lesser/filler/background/world-building kinds... I just love it. It incorporates it well, you can go ham in the codex learning more, or just dive into the basics - it's clearly a complex galaxy (and they do an even better job in 2 of fleshing it out further), and it never really felt overwhelming. It was pretty natural figuring it all out-!
Plus the interesting implications of resource hunting amongst the sapient races, and the little side missions you better bet I did every one of- there's so much rich depth in the story if you do 'em!! (And that lead with that Keeper side mission...? Looking back, damn, clever foreshadowing-!!!)
And oh my gods, Ilios??? hell yeah. I loved that mission so much, especially having Garrus & Kaiden with me when talking to the hologram/computer, and more than anything, that last sprint in the Mako trying to get to the jump before it closed-???
yeet the boi-
Also mannn I love a good setpiece, and having to go up the side of the elevator, space-side?? such a cool setup!!
Plus it felt good having been Paragon enough (as simple as the good v bad vibe system is, I don't hate it, lol) to avoid one of the Saren fights, ngl. And the er, "second fight" with Sovereign-Saren.... hell yeah
... I'll admit I had to double check my choice re whether to save the Council. I did in the end, but I swear, sometimes the way they phrase things I'm like ".... okay but Garrus is right, defeating Sovereign is more important than these few leaders??????" woops. Listen, priorities, is all I'm saying..... ( ̄ăŽďżŁ|||)ă
'Course later they emphasize (in ME2) that there were 10,000 people on that same ship and I was like well I wouldn't have second guessed if I'd known that, I mean c'mon-
Also I did indeed romance Liara in this one, so I got that scene ;Dc But,,,, I also knew by the end that I was totally gonna romance Garrus in 2 since he's an option then finally,,,,, lemme tell you the guilt as I waffled over whether to romance Liara bc of it. hahaha.
Aaaaand Mass Effect 2-
So I'm only up to right before the Reaper IFF Mission, so I don't know the ending, etc etc lol. That said, I've just finished every side mission I've found with the exception of the Shadowbroker Quest and the Arrival Quest (I've heard the latter basically leads into ME3, and the former is best either right before the Omega 4 jump or in postgame).
So from the start - fuck yeah fuck yeah what a high adrenaline start Shepard noooooo but also yes save Joker aH-
The motion comic too hot damn nice job
I loved this setup, seriously - especially forcing Shep into this situation, having to work with/for Cerberus, and the compelling reasoning given behind "why" they do what they do (I especially found it a good point that the Salarians have the Task Force, the Asaris the Commandos, the Turians the- etc... like, true, when you put it like that, having a similar group advancing human interests/solving human interstellar problems is pretty reasonable...). That said, I love too that it really isn't shied away from how Cerberus is nonetheless fucked up - or its at least done fucked up stuff.
Listen, I still think some messed up stuff is gonna be revealed in 2's endgame......... after that Horizon mission and the Collector's ship???? TIM I SEE YOU YOU SHADY MF-
aaanyways lol...
I'm so so glad on a gameplay level they nixed the Mako style exploration. A few Hammerhead missions are fine and a lot more focused than the slippery ass navigation in that glorified ATV, pfff. The probes are a neat way of getting after similar resources - and more importantly, having good levels and some good hubs (the Zakera Wards, Omega, Ilium, etc) is way way more fun than having a more 'sprawling' space that is.... a lot of empty nonsense, lol.
Then there's the fact that we get Joker right off the bat and you can interact with him so much - and him and EDI??? Get out gods I love them. Kasumi is so right when she says they sound like a bickering old married couple lol. I have a terrible feeling that some shit is gonna happen with EDI..... but I don't think she's evil as-is, at least.
Side-eying the hell out of those "access forbidden" parts of her that she doesn't even know.... and the fact that her AI core has a locked door access................... something's gonna happen gdi LEAVE OUR ADOPTED AI ALONE.
(Also Joker pls stop fracturing your thumb on the mute button)
Also please save me there are so many hot aliens in this game,,,,, the xeno/monsterfuckers really comin' through strong in the sequels............... doin' the lord's work........................................
In general, I love how many levels ME stepped up in two with complexity and interwoven narratives!! Like, to the point it'd be almost a drag to replay ME1, even though it was fun going through it (if occasionally a bit tedious with the cookie cutter rando planet science/mine facilities, lol). Like, just from how fun and interesting ME2 is, mostly! more of all the pre-introduced races, plus new ones, plus more filling in of intragalactic politics, and more interesting implications of all these space-faring races mixing....
Also gods WREX and his planet holy shit,,,,, fuckin' hell yeah my man get their shit together and also adopt Grunt yes good-
And Mordin??? My singing semi-evil scientist best friend forced to confront his choices more than he thought he ever would have???? With some of the best ongoing general report chatter of all the companions??
(when I tell you I choked on my coffee when I talked to him after confirming romance choice w/ Garrus and that 'pamphlet' and 'anaphalactic shot if ingesting-' kajsldkfjsldfjk)
Like, fuck, the fact that they actually dive into the mixed morality and horrors of the genophage, and you can confront Mordin on it, for good reason, yet he still stands his ground, until finally some bits of his loyalty mission seem to... affect him, and I'm guessing might set up things for 3 with him? Unsure, but either way, damn, the fact that they start to dig into it...
And Taliiiii my beloved forbidden alien wife TwT her loyalty mission was SO GOOD. I love how varied they all are?? Getting to defend her and discover what she'd unwittingly been a part of-!!
Zaeed is a bastard but tbh I love that he is and that he's unapologetic in him - and Kasumi omg, best thief. A heist?? Gods, yes- I love our couch lounge chats XD
Samara is..... illegally.......... she's an illegally powerful and beautiful and eloquent MILF...........................
(.... listen I'm sapphic as hell and I'm kicking my own ass for picking her up last aksjdlfksjdfl - but her loyalty mission, damn. And seeing how there's this interesting cultural subset, and the struggle with the Asari in that they unquestioningly accept/respect justicars, but also know that the impact outside their culture is a diplomacy nightmare waiting to happen-)
,.,,,,,T,,, Thane,,,,,
I am weak for morally implicated murder dads okay?? And that voice??? His mannerisms?????? How you first see him, and that prayer after assassinating her...???????? And his history/his people's history with the hanar, gods I love how messy it is, it feels so much more real!
Also Jack is a mess and I love her (and want to get her some therapy, omg), and her and Miranda nearly duking it out after you've done both their loyalty missions??? so good and makes a lot of sense-! Honestly I would love more interactions between teammates on the ship, but there's already so much the devs had to balance I can't blame 'em for minimizing, heh. But suffice to say I also love Miranda and Jacob, even if I'm softest for my alien crew XD Hell yeah Jacob, we'll get loud and spill drinks on the citadel indeed TwT
.... I could write a whole essay on how much I love Garrus oTL Perhaps because he and Tali are the throughlines from 1 on your 2 crew, I have some of the strongest feelings about them... but genuinely, he was one of my favorite companions in the first game, and how you find him as Archangel in two? Getting to help him fight his way out after he's gone nearly 48 hours straight fighting off three gangs alone, jfc. His vengeance quest and what can happen there.... That line? fuck me, that line -
It's so much easier to see the world in black and white. Grey? I don't know what to do with gray...
How DARE you come for my heart like this, devs holy shit
(also, some other choice faves so far from the series from him include We can disobey suicidal orders?? and This wasn't in my training manual... [in 1, if you have him with you @ th Thorian fight] and his whole.... pop the heat sink - in his romance ;Dc)
asdasdfksadjfkl like I said I can write an essay on him PFFF suffice to say I'm very looking forward to his romance scene and where things go in 3
But yeah gods I'm just gonna keep rambling if I'm not careful lol. Gods I don't even know what to talk about it's all so good and while I can understand people roasting the obviousness of Paragon V Renegade (v neutral) choices/alignments, I think they do a pretty damn good job in 2 of pushing it further - to the point that there were some times that I accidentally got renegade points and I wasn't that mad, haha. There's so much fun in the interactions that I just have a good time anyways~
I have so many thoughts about TIM (The Illusive Man) and Cerberus.... theories evolving galore............... and like, what the hell!! Omega 4 going to the center of the galaxy is such a cool twist, goddamn - though my heart still breaks at losing Kaiden (his line if you haven't romanced him?? about feeling like he lost a limb when he lost you??? holy shit.... but I also can't blame him for not trusting Cerberus to the point of it affecting his ability to trust Shepard... like fuck Shep go after himmmm) I'm really excited to see where that goes since he comes back in 3, and what the fuck happens with Cerberus bc while I love the fact that obviously there are a lot of people in it for the right reasons, doing good work, there are those that are doing the opposite, and I have a very bad feeling about where TIM will end up landing....
All that said though I need to do the Reaper IFF mission (where I'm lightly spoiled as to getting That Boy, but not how/what happens to make it so - just that it's apparently wise to have all your side missions done before getting him...) and the actual Omega 4 jump. So we'll see what happens and what I think about it from there heheh!
.... major kudos and genuine props if you made it here to the end, I am so sorry for not editing on condensing all this, and appreciate you so much ;w;
#night answers#night plays ME#(yes that's a purposeful pun lol)#((i sure have played myself by starting this series its so good aksdjflskjfd))
