Who were your favorite characters from G3/G4 mlp and why?
G3:
Wisteria - i love a good garden horse who's also a big socialist and hates the idea of being royalty cos she misses being with her friends
Minty - the goofiest lovable horse in the entire franchise that always delivered G3's most iconic moments (you broke santa? scene comes to mind) and its offensive she was never brought back for G4
Pinkie Pie - I honestly prefer this version over G4 Pinkie, cos seeing a level-headed, snarky yet still upbeat Pinkie, its a lot more fun and interesting to see than a wacky, emotionally unstable mess that is G4 Pinkie
Kimono - I really wish she was in G3 a lot more, cos the idea of a village hermit pony (not because she hates everyone but because shes very introverted) who occasionly helps the ponies with problems or give advice or just be someone to confide in is a great idea
Lily Lightly - her special about learning to love your weird wonderful self is such an important, sweet lesson cos even grown ass adults struggle to embrace being cringe. And her horn glowing makes her passion for lights that much more interesting cos its like she's sharing her love of lights to make everyone glow like she does. What a pioneer, she invented electric lights for these horses
Rarity - I love how much of a rambunctious little goober Rarity is, especially for a princess in training. Like she doesnt care that she never fell off a waterfall, she immediately wants to do it again. She loves to rollerskate, play around in the mud and wants to play with a caterpillar rather than study, like a real kid would do. But she does actually take her princess lessons seriously and grows into a more responsible person, without losing her fun-loving self.
Scootaloo - out of all the G3 ponies, Scoots stands out for being a little ankle biter but has a good heart. She can be selfish, impulsive and stubborn, again G3 really knows how to write kid characters
Sweetie Belle - the epitome of no thoughts, head empty and I love her for it. She's so baby and happy, that telling a white lie is a foreign concept to her
Cheerilee - I like her more neurotic and shy version than her teacher counterpart in G4, I also like that her dynamic with Scootaloo isnt toxic, unlike a lot of sibling relationships in media, the two are not only similar in age but also share the same stubbornness, but the two are quick to apologise to each other and its clear they still love each other, despite their differences.
Rainbow Dash - I LOVE DIVA DASH SO MUCH. WHY THE FUCK DID BRONIES COMPLAIN ABOUT HER OVER THE YEARS? SHE'S HILARIOUS?!
G4:
Twilight Sparkle - as much as I hate how much she became a vector for the writers spewing friendship, I love how Twilight became a great protagonist growing from an asocial student to the princess of friendship, being the straight mare to everyone's antics. Although her perfectionism and fanaticism have become flanderised over the years
Fluttershy - talk about a glow up, she went from an insufferable uwu wallflower to an introverted, yet snarky and self-confident pony who has retained all her lessons of self-assertion and yet still being the sweet, shy horse we all know. Also shy quiet characters having dry wit and has calm indignation when something ticks them off is just peak character writing
Rarity - this horse made me love ultra feminine characters, i remember hating Rarity when I started watching cos I knew she would be just the stereotypical diva bitch character that reminded me of all the girls i had to deal with in school at the time (me having insecurities about my femininty didnt help), but damn i couldnt be more wrong, cos she's a wonderfully sassy yet kind and passionate character. Her love of fashion and creating is infectious and while her friends are wildly different to her, she tries her best to make something she knows they will all like and isnt afraid to get her hooves dirty to help others
Discord - the most uniquely designed and characterised character. As someone who starts off a chaotically evil villain to a chaotic good reformed ally cos the shy horse reached out to him, its no surprise he became so popular in both the show and fandom. And to this day, his redemption is the most well-executed example ive seen cos of how tentative it was. I love how incredibly devoted he is to Fluttershy and will kill anyone who harms her. I just wish he had more scenes with the rest of the mane 6, I would've loved more Pinkie and Discord pulling pranks together.
Maud Pie - you will never find another pony in the entirety of MLP like Maud. Stoic, blunt and very literal in her choice of words, expressionless yet becomes instantly emotional and caring when her loved ones are hurt or in danger. Like whoever wrote her, I love you cos she's the most refreshing character ive seen. I love characters who look like eternally on autopilot yet will spring into action like a bat out of hell if the people they love are hurt.
Sunset Shimmer - The fact Sunset Shimmer didnt become a protagonist in her own right in Equestria Girls cos WE HAVE TO HAVE A TWILIGHT in every MLP G4 universe is a crying shame. She was saved from being a boring high school girl villain obsessed with power and thats it to a strong-willed, passionate, devoted friend who will fight tooth and nail to make her friends happy. I love how EQG reforms a bully without forcing Sunset to lose her edge and fiery temper cos that was always the biggest problem kids shows fall into when redeeming bullies. That scene were Sunset yells at Sci-Twi for unintentionally causing a lot of damage to Canterlot High and putting her friends in danger was palpable.
Princess Cadance - one of the most level headed characters in the show and honestly does a much better job at being a mentor to Twilight than Celestia. Also her relationship with Shining Armor is peak power couple. I love how despite being more powerful than he is, Cadance never treats him as someone beneath her. She's just great and I hate teenage me for calling her a bland Barbie horse.
Trixie - Trixie is the prime example of designated bitch cos the show tries desperately hard to make her look like a villain when all she did was put on a magic show and boast about her magic. Even when she gets redeemed, she was treated with more scorn and derision than DISCORD (who did a lot worse than Trixie) and becomes friends with a pony who one time SOLD HER HOUSE WITHOUT HER PERMISSION TO A RANDO JUST BECAUSE THEY HAD AN ARGUMENT THAT THE WAGON WAS TOO SMALL FOR BOTH OF THEM TO SLEEP IN. JESUS this show treated her like shit. its a damn shame cos Trixie's self-confidence and sarcasm made her a delight and underneath all her theatrics, she really does care for people and that wouldve been interesting to discuss if the show didnt constantly harp on her being arrogant COS HOW DARE SHE
Spike - Ive really grown to like Spike looking back, while Twilight has become more erractic and insane as time went on, Spike has become the straight man. I love how unphased he is about liking traditionally girly things and is comfortable with being a dragon who likes pony things. Of course bronies lambasted him for being selfish and mean or impulsive at times, cos how dare a kid character acts like a kid. I also like how overly excited he is about wanting to help others, from Twilight to Applejack to Rarity. I just really wish the writers dropped the whole crush he had on Rarity, cos the show got REALLY WEIRD with it.
Sunburst - what a delightfully nerdy horse. From hyperfixating on ancient pony lore and artifacts to being precise about a right answer percentage in a town trivia contest, he's hilarious and way too good of a character to be saddled with Starlight Glimmer of all people. He shouldve been Trixie's best friend if we're being honest.
Sorry for late reply!

JOYCE: Well, there are some things I'd be happy to see you share. Like the slaying. I mean, two of you fighting is safer than one, right? BUFFY: I guess. JOYCE: Unless, I mean, you heard her. She loves the slaying. Couldn't she take over for you? BUFFY: Mom, no one can take over for me. JOYCE: But you're going to college next year. I think it would be... BUFFY: Mom, the only way you get a new Slayer is when the old Slayer dies. JOYCE: Then that means you... When did you die? You never told me you died! BUFFY: It was just for a few minutes.

Hairstylist Tanisha Meeks did some sorcery to create a curly, red bob with Halle Bailey’s locs for the Met Gala! Whoa!
Tumblr media
Chloe Bailey sang her heart out at the Essence Black Women In Hollywood Awards in 2023 with this intricate updo!

The sister duo walked hand-in-hand at The Earshot Prize event in 2022. Both of them had honey-blonde looks, but styled differently. We love individuality!
Tumblr media
Chloe has sported blonde locs for a while now! In 2021, she added bedazzled edge extensions to the side of her face. How cool!
Tumblr media
Now this is how you transform into a character! Halle wore her locs in flowing, hobo red locs to look like our version of Ariel for The Little Mermaid premiere.

The Best Yuri of 2020
2020 was hell in every way, and many of us are looking forward to new possibilities and advances in 2021. However, the year brought us many small moments and gifts worth celebrating. Among these, the explosive growth and change within the Yuri genre are among the most precious and most outstanding achievements. This second century of Yuri opened with a bang, as phenomenal new works, creators, and moments made their mark and helped change the future genre.
Tumblr media
This annual list is a celebration of just a handful of the fantastic titles, people, and events in Yuri. There are likely some even greater ones that did not make the list because there is so much content in both English and Japanese that even I cannot keep up. However, among the troves of treasure, these titles stood out as shining examples of Yuri excellence. Some were released this year, others were recently adapted into English, and still, others are established titles that rose to prominence to dominate the conversation and my mind this year, but every one of them is worthy of being on this list and in your heart.
Here is the Best Yuri of 2020!
15: The Curse of Kudan Remastered
Japanese Yuri visual novel developers show no sign of slowing down as they continue to push to new heights and try new ideas. These are the same amazing people who brought us the delightful educational Yuri game The Expression Amrilato and the hilarious and surprisingly queer OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbando’s. However, this most recent release, The Curse of Kudan Remastered, is their best work yet. Released near Halloween, this game brings a new edge of dark mystery and the occult to Yuri audiences worldwide.
The Curse of Kudan is available on MangaGamer, JAST USA, Denpasoft, and Sekai Project.
Tumblr media
14: Adachi and Shimamura
English audiences were finally treated this year to Hitoma Iruma’s long-running and wildly successful Yuri light novel series, Adachi and Shimamura. Although the story struggles to gain traction, dedicated readers’ have their patience rewarded with a sweet tale full of gay pining. Alternatively, you can jump into its stellar anime adaptation, with gorgeous visuals and realized characters you will actually be willing to put up with the annoying Yashiro just to see where the title characters go. The series shows no sign of slowing down either, as the manga adaptation is coming to Western audiences next year.
Adachi and Shimamura is available to stream on Funimation. The light novel series is published by Seven Seas - https://amzn.to/3rTSZTK
Tumblr media
Honorable Mention: Happy Go Lucky Days
The OVA adaptation of Fragtime got most of the attention this year. Still, director Takuya Satou and Pony Canyon also gave us this much-overlooked “love is love” anthology movie based on Takako Shimura’s manga (Sweet Blue Flowers, Wandering Son). The first short in the film, “Happy,” is easily the best Yuri anime of the year. It follows the beautiful yet realistic queer love story of two women hooking up at a mutual ex-girlfriend’s wedding, only for the relationship to blossom and warm viewers’ hearts. Sadly, while stylized, the budget demanded the animation cut a few too many corners. Additionally, the subsequent stories are at best tedious and at worst alarmingly problematic, which is why Happy Go Lucky Days only gets an honorable mention.
The OVA is streaming on HIDIVE
Tumblr media
13: Mieri Hiranishi
The Yuri scene has many colorful creators with a breadth of different ideas and stories in the genre, yet few have provided as much humor and joy as Mieri. This talented creator spectacularly tumbled into the scene with her manga essay The Moment I Realized I Wasn’t Straight, which embodies the brutal honesty and realism of Nagata Kabi and matches it with exaggerated hilarity. She continues to chronicle her painful struggles of being a butch girl in love with butch girls in the monthly series The Girl that Can’t Get a Girlfriend. Alternatively, you can follow her on Twitter for just as much heart and laughter.
Read The Girl that Can’t get a Girlfriend on Tapas and Webtoon.
Tumblr media
12: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!
My Next Life as a Villainess has what can only be described as volcanic bisexual energy. Every character protagonist Catarina Claes encounters is entirely enthralled by her. Of course, she is far too preoccupied with her quest to avoid doom flags and change her ultimate fate to notice any romantic interest. The series is rewarding and well structured, as views are just as focused on how Catarina plans to avoid certain doom as they are with the various romantic misses her band of companions cooks up. While the “friendship ending” did not capitalize on its Yuri potential, it was perhaps the most satisfying possibility for this crazy harem, at least until season two comes out, which looks, unfortunately, to be significantly less queer.
My Next Life as a Villainess is streaming on Crunchyroll
Tumblr media
11: Love Me for Who I Am
Kata Konayama’s manga series is less Yuri than a general LGBT work, but it has a lesbian character and explores her identity and struggles in great detail. Few titles before have captured the exciting and nervous waves of emotions that young people feel as they explore gender and sexual identities and try to find themselves. This heartfelt and extremely queer series rubberbands between cute moe dress up to tragic and gripping backstory, keeping readers on their toes the whole time.
Love me for Who I Am is published by Seven Seas - https://amzn.to/3rTSZTK
Tumblr media
10: A Summer’s End – Hong Kong 1986
Oracle and Bone’s debut visual novel, A Summer’s End, is set in a vibrant and electric 1980’s Hong Kong. Drawing inspiration from classic Asian cinema, music, and fashion. The worlds of Michelle, a young office worker, and a free-spirited woman named Same collide. The two struggle to comprehend and accept each other’s feelings just as they struggle against society’s expectations and prejudices. An incredibly thoughtful and touching adventure, the creators incorporated vital contemporary elements include Asian LGBTQ rights and growing political unrest in Hong Kong, into this illustrious game.
The visual novel is available on Steam.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mention: Goodbye, My Rose Garden
In the same vein as A Summer’s End, Goodbye, My Rose Garden is a beautiful period piece that incorporates LGBT views into its shattering narrative. The story follows a bright-eyed immigrant, Hanako, wanting to make a new life in England as an author at the dawn of the twentieth century. She takes a job as a maid to noblewoman Alice, but their relationship takes a turn when Alice asks Hanako to kill her. This poignant tale is beautiful and an honest depiction of love and its conflict with responsibility and society.
Goodbye, My Rose Garden is published by Seven Seas Entertainment - https://amzn.to/3hFSyaG
Tumblr media
9: Shio Usui
Usui’s hit Shaikaijin Yuri manga Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon could easily take this spot even though it is not even out in English until February 2021. The manga is already making waves and receiving constant praise. The characters and their journey to discover love and self-acceptance are as charming as they are relatable and grounded. However, it is the creator, Usui, who really deserves acclaim. Not just for their work on Doughnuts, but having a second serialized story, Onna Tomodachi to Kekkon Shitemita, in monthly Yuri magazine Comic Yuri Hime simultaneously. It is even more remarkable when you consider these two iconic stories are Usui’s first long-running works, as they only contributed one-shots before.
Tumblr media
8: Bloom Into You: Regarding Saeki Sayaka
Bloom Into You is possibly the most iconic Yuri series in the past decade, and while the manga deserves its own place on this list, the best thing to come out of the series as a whole is easily the light novels. This trilogy by Adachi and Shimamura creator Hitoma Iruma dives deep into supporting cast member Sayaka. Readers are treated to a delightful journey as she discovers her sexuality, experiences heartbreak, and finally finds herself breaking free and falling in love. With the help of gorgeous illustrations by Nakatani Nio herself, Iruma masterfully captures Sayaka’s unique voice and emotions in this wonderful series. Whether a fan of the originals or not, every Yurijin must check out Regarding Saeki Sayaka.
The light novel series is published by Seven Seas - https://amzn.to/3hFSyaG
Tumblr media
7: Our Teachers are Dating
The best a Yuri can get. This workplace romance follows two teachers at the start of a new relationship taking nervous yet enthusiastic first steps, including saying I love you, going on their first date, and even sleeping together. It is so heartfelt and salacious that readers will squeal the whole time. Additionally, our heroines are supported in their relationship by everyone they know, their students, colleagues, and even the principal. It is a perfect world for these two lovebirds! Our Teachers are Dating would easily be number one or two in any other year, but the competition is fierce in 2020. So even though this is only number seven, it is still a master class Yuri manga.
The manga is published by Seven Seas Entertainment - https://amzn.to/38XY3O9
Tumblr media
6: Amongst Us
Who would have thought that a comedy alternative universe story spinoff of a fantasy action series would be the single best Yuri webcomic this year? Shilin’s astounding artwork illustrations the hilarious and irresistible journey of girlfriends Blackbird and Veloce. These two eccentric young women get into all kinds of everyday mischief that bounces between tender and touching romance, completely outrageous comedy, and downright thirst-inducing sorcery. Seriously, you should buy the first volume for Veloce’s back muscles alone. The storyline skips between time, but both their established relationship and their meeting as teenagers are adorkable and captivating.
Amongst Us is available online free on Webtoon and the comic’s website. The first volume is in paperback on Shilin’s site.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mention: Éclair
There are a lot of Yuri anthologies out there, and they have done some beautiful things. Many focus on themes like Syrup. Others collect a series of stories by an author into one bound work. However, out of all of them, Éclair is the most successful. ASCII Media Works took some of the genre’s most extraordinary creators and let them do whatever they wanted, and the results are spectacular. The incredible talent behind Éclair somehow packs a full volume’s worth of story and character into just a few pages with every chapter. While the first volume came overseas a few years ago, Yen Press gave Yurijin a gift this year by releasing the entire rest of the series in which readers can get lost.
The anthology series is published by Yen Press - https://amzn.to/38XY3O9
Tumblr media
5: I’m in Love with the Villainess
A small trend of isekai Yuri with villainesses emerged recently, and I honestly had few hopes of I’m in Love with the Villainess. The series is pretty popular, but I often find that this does not denote quality, and with isekai having some institutional issues, I suspected this would fall flat. Then the volume three cover showcased an incredible accomplishment, allowing for a lesbian relationship to blossom into a family with children, and it blew me away. Finally, I read volume one and realized that the series has incredible character, some of the best world-building I have ever seen in a light novel, thoughtful discussions of inequality and societal issues, and most impressively, open and frank discussion of queer identity and life Yuri has ever seen! This one is something special.
The series is published by Seven Seas Entertainment - https://amzn.to/3nedvdZ
Tumblr media
4: The Last of Us Part II
Yes, I know this one is not Yuri and that a portion of the population despises this game and will likely be exceptionally angry at me for including it. However, I maintain that it was an incredibly challenging masterpiece. Naughty Dog did not take the easy route out and delivered one of the most devastating media experiences I have ever seen. As I said in my article about the game, playing it changed me, and it sticks with me to this day. The Last of Us Part II earns its spot on this list because it pushed boundaries more with LGBTQ inclusion than any other AAA game. From brave inclusion of LGBTQ themes to queer characters and storylines at its center, the game changes gaming and it will never go back.
The Last of Us Part II is available on PlayStation 4
Tumblr media
3: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
She-Ra feels like the culmination of all the LGBTQ progress western cartoons have made over the past few years. From The Legend of Korra to Steven Universe, young people are finally seeing more LGBTQ people represented on the small screen. This epic fantasy concluded with an amazing and powerful lesbian romance, delivering on its queer promise and revolutionized representation in a trope-defying crescendo.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is streaming on Netflix
Tumblr media
2:  The Conditions of Paradise
The greatest single Yuri work of all in 2020 was the English release of Akiko Morishima’s breakthrough manga, The Conditions of Paradise. Initially released in 2007, this anthology detailed the love between adult women. It was in every way a manga ahead of its time, and seeing it finally get a small piece of the recognition it deserves overseas is a true gift. The fact that we can own this legendary piece of Yuri history and Morishima’s other anthologies is nothing short of a blessing from the Yuri goddess.
The Conditions of Paradise is published by Seven Seas Entertainment - https://amzn.to/38bh4xq
Tumblr media
Honorable Mention: Otherside Picnic
This eerie sci-fi horror series combines the best of pulse-pounding thrillers, complex and intelligent hard science fiction, and exciting Yuri romance. Author Iori Miyazawa spends as much time crafting a well-paced and intriguing narrative about a mysterious world where occult creatures roam as he does establishing two believable and grounded heroes in Sorawo and Toriko. The romance between the two may be slow to start, but their chemistry is undeniable and as the stakes and story build, so too does their relationship. Not only are the light novels incredible, but the series’ manga adaptation is coming soon to the West as well as an upcoming TV anime in early 2021.
Otherside Picnic is streaming on Funimation. The light novels are published by J-Novel Club - https://amzn.to/3niiv1g
Tumblr media
1. Yuri subgenres
For a long time, Yuri was not a genre of its own, but elements of romances or bonds between women found in other works. Now, thanks to an increasing library of works, the advent of social media, and a wider audience, Yuri is a genre on its own, with many creators telling different stories in different styles. However, 2020 saw the continued emergence of something extraordinary, subgenres. Yuri is now so vast, we can actually categorize the works within. Depending on their characters, like classic schoolgirl romances or spicy shakaijin office affairs, their world, such as fantasy or isekai series and thrilling science fiction adventures, and even other elements within. One of my personal favorites is the feminist Yuri that emerges from titles like Sexiled, where women celebrate the accomplishments of other women and dismantle power structures stacked against them. Now, no matter what kind of Yurijin you are, there is something for you to love.
Tumblr media
I am happy to leave 2020 behind, but I bring with me a renewed love and admiration for Yuri. 2021 looks to be a somehow even better year for the genre, and I am thrilled to experience every minute of it that I can. Yuri has transformed into something far greater than I ever thought it would be, and let us all enjoy its evolution and expansion together in 2021.

(AO3)
June 1st falls on a random Tuesday. The weather is decent enough, the sun bright but not harsh, and the air is pleasant, slowly dipping to colder temperatures.
Everyone crowds around various desks to chatter before homeroom, and Iida spends a grand total of two minutes trying to bring about order before migrating towards Todoroki’s desk to join in the conversation he’s having with Midoriya and Sero. When there’s roughly 14 seconds to spare before Aizawa rolls into the class in his signature yellow sleeping bag, everyone takes their seats and on time, as always, Aizawa arrives.
Three things are noted immediately:
1.     The yellow sleeping bag is nowhere in sight. It’s happened before, but not often.
2.    There’s a strange bounce to Aizawa’s step. Not like a normal bounce, but he’s not dragging his feet like a reluctant, sleep-deprived sloth. His steps are focused and intentional. This is a very rare, almost never-before-witnessed sight.
3.    His hair is up. He doesn’t usually do it up for class, though they’ve seen him pull it into a pony when he’s dressed more casually and not in his hero attire. This is an unprecedented situation.
The class watches Aizawa wearily because, from literal months of experience, they have realized that when something is out of the ordinary, shit usually flings itself towards the fan in a most spectacularly dramatic fashion.
Even Bakugou is on-edge, watching Aizawa like a hawk. Midoriya is ready to whip his iconic notebook out and make yet another behavioral observation under the Eraserhead section. Iida looks ready to disperse any tension. They are all ready.
Aizawa sets his stuff down, gruffly wishes them good morning and then turns around to write something on the board.
They are not ready.
It’s not a big deal at all actually. In hindsight, its stupidly minor, but with Aizawa, it stands out bright and shiny, and even Koda makes a small noise of surprise.
Aizawa’s hair is pulled into a pony with a scrunchie. Which is fine, all well and good. But the scrunchie is made of a rainbow-colored hyper shiny material, which is surprising, because Aizawa always seems allergic to color, especially on his person.
And finally, there are only 6 colors in the rainbow. Momo connects the dots before the rest, though Midoriya follows closely behind.
‘That’s-‘
‘-pride,’ Midoriya breathes, soft but just enough for Bakugou, Jirou, and Sero to hear.
The class is shocked for the first ten or so minutes, as more and more people make the connection, but honestly, it’s just a scrunchie. And with Eri under Aizawa’s care, it isn’t unlikely that he’s worn one of her hair ties or something. This is probably a coincidence, even if it is the first of June, so everyone stops fixating and starts focusing on class.
The scrunchie goes unmentioned and1A is on the same page- it’s definitely just a one-time thing.
It is not a one-time thing.
On the second of June, Aizawa saunters in seemingly back to his normal attire, and a few shoulders slump. They might all be saying its a coincidence, but that doesn’t mean they’re happy about it. There’s something so reassuring about the idea of their teacher, someone that protects them fiercely and loyally, being supportive.
Aizawa doesn’t seem to pick up on the mood, he just assigns them some self-study before taking a seat at his desk. And then he, very uncharacteristically, puts his feet up and reclines in his chair, a folder propped open in his lap.
There’s a collective inhale, the whole class breathing in as one because there it is- undeniable proof that it isn’t a coincidence.
On Aizawa’s feet are the brightest, most vibrantly gay pride socks ever. Each of the 6 colors loop around the material before the pattern repeats, and there’s no white material or anything, just the colors of the flag over and over.
‘Holy shit,’ Mina whisper-shouts, and her smile is blinding. Uraraka giggles. Tokoyami nods sagely and says, ‘The support of a figure of authority is a beacon against the darkness of humanity.’
They do their best to focus on self-study, but there’s a buzz around the class, a happy vibe that permeates the air and saturates it completely. There’s a glob of purple in the corner that seems indifferent, if not actively dismayed, but he goes ignored.
Midoriya writes something in his notebook and puts three stars next to it.
On the third of June, Aizawa has a rainbow hair clip pushing his bangs out of his face, and on the fourth, the soles of his shoes are rainbow and proud.
The competition begins the following Monday.
The thing about class 1A is that they try to support one another in any way possible, to encourage and stand together and everything. The other thing is that they’re hella competitive. It’s a hero course after all, and they’re trying to come out on top and be the best.
And it turns out their teacher, the chilled, nonchalant, mostly uninterested Aizawa Shota, is almost more than a little competitive when it comes to this stuff.
On Monday, Momo uses a pride scrunchie to pull her hair into her signature ponytail. Jirou has a band around her wrist that says love is love is love, and Satou bakes rainbow cookies for the whole class, leaving a few on Aizawa’s desk beforehand.
Their teacher walks in with his hair up again, and when his eyes settle on the cookies, they widen fractionally before he schools his expression into a more neutral one. He greets them all and his eyes flit over Jirou’s band, and the colorful cookie crumbs around the class. When he looks at Momo, she quickly turns her head to the side, showing off her hair accessory that matches his.
Aizawa doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t smile, or even nod, nothing. He just kinda gets down to business. At least, that’s what it would look like to someone on the outside.
But 1A reads him- they watch the way he pushes his hair back, fingers lingering on his scrunchie while he reads out their assignment. They see the way his eyes momentarily linger on the cookies or Jirou’s wrist, such small, quick glances that they all catch because they read him. They know him, and he knows that they know.
When class ends, the room is filled with warm giggles when Aizawa leaves, the plate of cookies in hand.
The next day, Ojiro has a braid in his tail with different threads mixed in there, forming the familiar rainbow pattern. Mina has her horns painted in a pride flag ombre, spanning three different colors on each. Kirishima uses a rainbow hairband to keep his bangs out of his face during training, and Midoriya switches out his black shoelaces for rainbows.
Aizawa’s eyes ping pong around the class, and for a moment everyone wonders how many dress codes they’re breaking but he doesn’t say anything again. He just reads out their assignments as usual, his own pride pin shining brightly on his chest, against the black of his hero uniform.
It’s all fun and games, full of warmth and support until Aizawa starts pulling out the big guns.
Because when Aizawa walks in with a multicolored scarf wrapped around his neck, the class collectively realizes- he is challenging them, and beating them quite mercilessly at that.
It’s obvious enough that even Bakugou growls in frustration, and then the games begin.
Mina shaves the word Pride into Iida’s undercut. Kaminari paints his nails. Hagakure replaces all her uniform buttons with multicolored ones. Shoji replaces his teal blue face mask with a pride one, and Uraraka has a few braids on the back of her head too. Satou’s desserts get more and more elaborate, more and more eye-catching and delicious.
The day after Aizawa walks in with a multicolored scarf, belt and goggles set, Satou stays up the entire night baking, set on paying their teacher back thrice fold.
Morning finds a rainbow croquembouche perched on Aizawa’s desk. Even Bakugou gives Satou a nod of respect because what the fuck? It’s literally a tower of sweets, brightly colored and absolutely delectable, and they get the biggest reaction out of Aizawa yet. His eyes widen, mouth dropping into a shocked little ‘o’, and his eyes immediately seek out Satou, who gives him a wide grin. Shaking his head incredulously, Aizawa conducts his class as usual. It’s a herculean task but he manages.
He still walks out with the entire dish balanced in his hands with great care.
Every teacher in their year has rainbow-colored tongues for the rest of the day.
Aizawa retaliates with eyeshadow. Rainbow eyeshadow. Jirou’s mouth drops, Aoyama starts wailing dramatically and even Todoroki looks impressed. Bakugou clicks his tongue and looks away, and Mina wants revenge.
The entire class comes together for the final showdown. Everyone tries to put color in their hair, though it doesn’t really work for the darker colors. Tokoyami adds a few sprinkles of glitter into his feathers, Iida switches his plain black frames to much more gaudy pride ones, and Todoroki and Bakugou have the most vibrant hair of them all, bright and ridiculous. Aizawa eyes them fondly almost, and that’s when they should’ve realized they were way out of their depth.
Because on June 30th, Aizawa walks into the class, his uniform spick and span, hair down, a ridiculous bounce in his step. Everyone eyes him from head to toe, and when they land on his feet, Kirishima inhales shakily.
‘No,’ he whispers.
‘Oh yes,’ Aizawa answers, his grin far too gleeful.
‘No fucking way,’ Bakugou snarls. His hands are shaking.
‘Language,’ Aizawa admonishes, his smile widening.
‘We’re doomed,’ Mina mumbles.
And right then, Aizawa taps the heels of his shoes together, and his pride rainbow shoes glow up and that’s it. Class 1A has lost. They accept it rather graciously, all things considered. Aizawa cackles like an evil witch, and Sero comforts a weeping Kaminari.
On July 1st, things go back to normal. Mostly normal.
Because Midoriya keeps the shoelaces. Someone sneaks a rainbow charm on Bakugou’s bag that he somehow keeps forgetting to obliterate to pieces. Kirishima doesn’t switch out his hairband, and Ojiro asks Tsuyu to braid his tail when they go out for more casual outings.
And Aizawa? Well, the soles of his hero boots are never quite the same.

G5 SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
My thoughts! (cute pic added so it wont be just boring text)
Tumblr media
So I just saw the movie.
I been waiting for this ever since it was announced. I gotta say I was skeptical about it first but now Im like 'huh I see"
General : lighthearted movie with good music.
Plot : mediogre, I wanted to know more what happend!?
Questions :like SUNNYS DAD??? he died HOW??? HOW.. WHY WERE THE placements in his house..? Why did everyone start hating each other? What happend to Twilight and her friends?
Im sure everyones ASKING these question and I feel like movie should had covered this but maybe its a work for the show.
Thoughts : I really loved the animation! outstaniding and so many refernces and little clues every where that Im not sure I picked these up. So much to notice! The FREAKING pinup calender of Hitch.. GAY... and yeH This leads me to thibk that they are adults like in their 20s? like why else would there be that kind of joke or idk. After all Sunny lives alone too and Izzy? Also Sprout literally has the man child vibes so I doubt they are really young. Late teens at max I think! THE GUARDS were so cute and funny.Dont mind if i SHIP em lol. Also Sprout lowkey gay we all know that. Their worlds were really pretty and I liked how funny sterotypes they all had of each other. The music was so good. Sprouts song is the best!! The ending makes me think SUNNYS wings and horn arent permanent. They were see threw so yeah that wont be a thing in the show so I dont think non of us need to scream about that. Really have so much questions and movie answered so little that it makes me think what did the movie told us? I did really enjoy it but did it explain enough about their current world to us? No absolutely not!
Unicorn/Pegasi/Earth pony:
Another intresting thing to note is how unicorns who use to be higher class ones in g4 are now primitive nations. They live in woods and didnt seem to have any tehnology ? They seem to be like this "hipster" society that lives in woods and collect crysthals and read poems. Anything to just get their time off. Earth ponies have a powerful propaganda going on. A very dictatorship kind of way of thinking. They all work as a little town society like all the tribes but earth ponies propaganda to hate and be scared of unicorns and Pegasi seems much stronger. Their society seems to me like a little town community kind of. They have some technology- doesnt seem to have smartphones but they have movies and other things. Pegasi seems to be most obssed with tehnology and celerbtiy and gossip media. Much like canterlot use to be with lots celebrities and higher class ponies. I guess they just needed soemtjing cuz they lost their abilty to fly so they all came obssed with royal family and celebrities and gossip culture. What im saying each tribe had their own way of coping with things. To unicorns this seemed to be the most hurtful because they had no "fake" hope like the Pegasi had who thought royal family only could fly.
Characthers: Im gonna get hate for this but I really liked Sprout? like I know he is man baby but I thought the dictator ship kind ruling was pretty funny and well he just wanted to make his mom proud. I liked that his mom wasnt insane either? like she saw that the power was getting to his head. Speaking of moms Queen Haven is icon. I like her. She just likes glamour and camera. Nothing wrong with that. I LAUGHED WHEN I SAW THAT THEY HAD GOLDEN JAIL. Pegasi are clearly very wealthy. Zipp to me in this movie was the weakest characther? she barely had any moments of her own. Pipp had more mean energry than i thought like I thought she was gonna be literally like OMG SLAAAY QUEEN YASSS all the time but she gladly wasnt. Im looking forward more to see both of the sisters and their differnces. Kinda reminds me of me and my sister tbh one is all about fashion and expensive things in life and I am well.. I like more earthy things. So im lookin forward seeing those two interact the most.Hitch was pretty cool. He is like mix of applejack and fluttershy. I like him, not bad at all but very charming and clearly adored in town. Ok now the best SUNNY AND IZZY!! they are kinda... fruity hehzhejdjej I MEAN NOT STRAIGHT but also I love how I could see them as literally soulmates in friend way.. the latern thing.. that was so sniff.. I CRIED OK.. SHRED SINGLE TEAR. anywayd Im glad Izzy isnt RANDOM XD RAWR kinda pony I thought shed be. Will see how they are treated later. SUNNY is just precious also SOCIALIST AF.. bruh zjejs idk how I feel about that like she has that vibe love and tolerance to all but it could go so wrong. But Im glad she didnt loose optimism fully in end! She is previous.
The plot is how it is so ILL give this movie solid 8/10. Enjoyable!
Anyways in general I think the movie was good! Go watch it. if not for anything else then the visuals and songs are really good!

Aragorns ranked based on how funny they are
5.Rankin-Bass Aragorn:
Tumblr media
Shows up late in the movie with little explanation. Gandalf’s like “you should do a suicide-mission march on the Black Gate” and Aragorn’s like “eh sure I guess I wasn’t planning on doing anything else today.”
All in all he’s not as funny as the other Aragorns, but he gets points for Just Rolling With It and for that sick helmet.
Funniness Level: 7/10 love how his fashion sense is the polar opposite of Bakshi Aragorn
4.Musical Aragorn:
Tumblr media
The musical in general is a hilariously amazing mess and I love it. It was also drastically rewritten many times over its run, so Aragorn’s characterization varies depending on the version.
In the the bootleg I listened to, I *think* what they were going for was.
Aragorn hides his true identity from everyone until the second act. Then he finally reveals he’s the Lost King of Gondor to Boromir, as Boromir is dying. And while that’s a compelling idea it’s also funny bc Boromir’s just like:
“Dude--”
Tumblr media
“You couldn’t have told me this sooner???????”
Tumblr media
If I remember right the musical implies that Arwen is also one of the few people Aragorn has told about his true heritage? I think this means Musical!Aragorn apparently only reveals he’s the Lost King to a) the pretty girl he’s crushing on and b) the handsome man he has homoerotic subtext with. VALID
Funniness Level: 9/10 your crush would probably be more impressed to hear you were the Lost King of Gondor if they weren’t busy dying from multiple arrow wounds
3. Book Aragorn:
FUN FACT: Aragorn sings more in the books than he does in the actual musical. The musical cut all of Aragorn’s songs. The cowards.
He’s only a “loner” for the Aesthetic....... He makes the hobbits feel sorry for him by saying “a hunted man often wearies of mistrust and longs for friendship” right before introducing them to his friend Glorfindel, and his friend Elrond, and his friend Arwen, and oh yeah he’s friends with Bilbo too, and---
Also. There’s a moment in the “Tale of Aragorn and Arwen” where Aragorn’s like “I’m in love with Arwen” and Aragorn’s mom says “well she’s out of your league” and Aragorn responds “so I have to be sad and alone for all my life???” and his mom is like “yup.” Iconic
Aragorn has way too many names and way too many of them have to do with his long legs. Strider, Wingfoot, Longshanks, Telcontar (Strider in Elvish, the last name he takes as King.) He’s got 50 names and half of them are variations on “Daddy Long Legs”
Funniness Level: 100/10 would be a lot higher but I deducted points bc I’m kinkshaming his obsession with legs
2.Peter Jackson Aragorn:
Tumblr media
PJ Aragorn is so terrified of the burden of being king that he tries to hide from it. He just wants to be free.
In the Two Towers Aragorn and Eowyn discuss what to do with an unruly battle-scarred horse. Aragorn tells Eowyn that the horse should be set free.
Tumblr media
It doesn’t matter if the horse is kingly. It doesn’t matter if, as Eowyn says, he’s a  royal horse that once belonged to the king’s son. Because the horse is sad.
Even if he’s a kingly royal horse, he is very sad.
People are expecting too much from the horse and it’s making him scared!!!! He’s not a bad horse, he’s just panicking because he feels trapped!!!! So they should set him free, Aragorn insists. He just wants to be free.
“He has seen enough of war,” Aragorn says as he walks away. And you wonder if he’s talking about the horse............... or himself.
Because PJ-Aragon just wants to be free! Free, like the horses! He relates to the horses! The horses are like him, because they too feel trapped and they’re rebellious and unruly and desperately long for freedom!!!!!!!!!
“You just don’t understand me, mom Elrond!!!!!”
Funniness Level: 20000000/10, he’s the protagonist of a Horse Girl Movie who somehow stumbled into a fantasy epic
Ralph Bakshi Aragorn:
Ralph Bakshi Aragorn is serious, sober, noble, and regal.
John Hurt voices him, and his performance is honestly one of the best parts of the movie. He’s legitimately a good Aragorn!!! And on paper, he seems like he would be the least funny Aragorn.
But just.
Just.
He’s a Very Serious Aragorn but he dresses like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hobbits walk into the Prancing Pony and Aragorn’s sitting in the corner, no pants, with his bare legs stretched out like he’s trying to seduce them.
Tumblr media
And no one ever comments on this!!!! Aragorn is always Rolling to Seduce but none of the other characters acknowledge it!!!!!
Then there’s the animation. The Bakshi film was made by a team of inexperienced animators who relied on tracing over live-action footage as a crutch, which is why the animation looks Like That(tm). The character’s faces float around their heads and their movements, especially in the battle scenes where the live-action reference wasn’t that good, are always.......hmmmmmm.
Aragorn vs Ringwraith WHO WOULD WIN???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Funniness Level: 3000000000000/10 sparks joy

🌈RH POSITIVITY🌈
DISCLAIMER: you do not have to agree with the following writing. you can believe in these pairings romantically or platonically, however you’d like to interpret them! these are personally written to be in a romantic way, as ships, so please at least acknowledge that! you don’t even have to like any of these ships! if you are still into shipping but don’t ship these pairs, that’s completely fine! you are not obligated to agree. this is a post about positivity.
FEATURING:
Jade x Skyler
Poppy x Skyler
Ruby x Bella
Sunny x Poppy
Bella x Sunny
Skyler x Violet
Bella x Amaya
💙SKYLER X JADE💚
i haven’t really thought of a ship name for them, but i’m getting nature vibes (blue like the water and green like the earth) so idk! maybe something elemental? i have no clue haha.
anyway this ship is so underrated! one of their most iconic moments (in my opinion) is the way they look at each other in the fashion studio commercial. ofc, there is more to them than that. i like how in tune these two are with their emotions. they feel them on such powerful levels. i feel like they can really connect this way, even when there’s a misunderstanding going on (episode four) i love how they made up. usually jade is the one to focus hard on projects, even if it’s in a sarcastic manner, but the roles sort of switched with skyler thinking about the project and jade being caught up in her emotions. i love how they made up & bonded at the end of the episode, too!
🧡POPPY X SKYLER💙
i also don’t know if these two have a ship name. maybe Blue Butterfly? or SkyFly? or Popler? i have no clue! but i do know that these two are super underrated! i have been shipping them from around episode three because they are just so cute! they definitely seem to have a close bond, especially being complimentary colour gals along with being roommates.
i feel like even though skyler gets very emotional, she is still pretty grounded & realistic. i think poppy gets caught up in her feelings in a different way than skyler does, so i imagine skyler could be someone who helps bring poppy back to her senses. i also imagine they are supportive gfs who give each other tips & advice from time to time. i feel like one of skyler’s fav things about poppy would be her sense of silliness as well as her skills with music. i can imagine poppy would often talk and brag about skyler to all of her friends.
❤️RUBY X BELLA💗
i haven’t really seen an established ship name for this pair nor have i come up with one for myself. i’m thinking of something along the lines of Valentines, Roses, Strawberry or Sweet Cherries! but i think this pair is very overlooked in the series.
they are definitely close, being roommates and all. they are both very amazing gals, impulsive in any way possible, and always there to help hype a friend up. i feel like they share a common interest in getting the job done, no matter what the cost is. ruby needed to prove her point to violet, even if it meant contradicting herself. bella wanted to take a photo of her set design, even if it meant losing her spot at rainbow high. i feel like this duo could accomplish a lot together, and they’re definitely smarter than they appear. i feel like they would do amazing things together!
💛SUNNY X POPPY🧡
i have seen Sunset used at this pairs ship name! i personally use Citrus but i think Sunset is just adorable! i feel like this is yet again, one of the most underrated duos in rainbow high
i love how poppy just knew her music would cheer sunny up when she was feeling down. i also love the chaotic energy these two hold. they simply share one brain cell. i feel like my top three scenes of theirs would be when they were dancing together in episode two, when they were trying to read the words behind the mirror in episode four, and when sunny was trying to stall from poppy entering her dorm room in episode twelve. i just love the goofy energy this duo radiates. cheerful girlfriends! i feel like they would have very little complications in a relationship together and would always come to mutual understandings.
💗BELLA X SUNNY💛
i personally refer to this ship as Pink Lemonade and i haven’t seen another ship name for them! but ive never really seen content about this duo. they haven’t gotten too many scenes in the series so it’s understandable. but of course, i see potential in them!
i feel like they would possibly be a thinker x feeler duo, so i already sense a sort of balance between them. they’re both very considerate and caring. i feel like sunny, with her naturally sweet and convincing personality, would be able to successfully handle bella’s impulsive decisions and i feel like bella would make sure sunny gets the care and support she deserves! they were both very caring of skyler and ruby’s whereabouts in episode six, and i feel like they would have fun working on projects together.
💙SKYLER X VIOLET💜
i don’t talk about this duo as much as i should! i refer to them as “Skylet” and they give me mega rarishy vibes! (from my little pony)
honestly, i think they aren’t so bad. ofc, there’s the factor that violet showed absolutely no care whatsoever for skyler’s breakup and really only wanted to stream it for her channel. i like to think that behind the scenes, violet realized that and apologized for it, and skyler was understanding and thanked her. i feel like the more developed version of violet pairs well with skyler. violet is another one of the impulsive, aggressive characters in rainbow high. she does what she wants when she feels like it. with skyler being someone who usually sees both sides to a situation & gives extremely helpful advice, i feel like she could ground violet when needed. that is, if violet were able to consider her words. i also think this duo would just generally be very soft! vi would totally give support to sky when she’s feeling v emotional.
💗BELLA X AMAYA🤍
okay hear me out. this duo has potential. of course, i can only really run off of headcanons and theories with my thoughts on this ship, since they lack content in the canon series. but i feel like they have potential. i kinda wanna call this ship Strawberry Marshmallow but idk haha. maybe there would be a cooler name that is kind of in reference to the episode 7/8 drama
i feel like bella, being considerate in the way she is, would definitely make sure amaya feels included during group tasks. they both play leadership roles and would honestly make a great power duo in that sense! another thinker x feeler ship in my opinion but they still share common personality traits that i feel wouldnt clash. of course, they have a misunderstanding going on in canon, and last we knew, bella wasn’t real fond of amaya. but she doesn’t know amaya personally so who is to say that wouldnt get along if they did!

Calculators and Key Changes
Summary: Kazami blew into Republic City High like a hurricane. The students loved her, she changed how the arts program was run and rose it out of the ashes. She got along with most all of the staff, that is, except for one.
Lin would give her props for saving the arts program, but that’s as far as it went. The failed opera singer was obviously looking for what she’d see as an “easy” gig to get her back in the papers and then abandon her students. And she wasn’t going to offer praise for a one trick pony.
But when things shift, when there’s an understanding, can their students push the two titans of the school together to find their own happiness?
A/N: This is a completely self indulgent high school AU. I tried to write it in second person POV, but it didn’t flow well so it is third person with it being Lin x OC. Many props go to @kuvirasbrat for helping me get this shaped though <3

Homecoming season at Republic City High meant many things. Mostly, it meant spirit days where both students and teachers made fools of themselves attempting to meet the day’s theme. Today was easy enough, it was a “Going to the Beach!” motif. Kazami dug around in her closet until she finally found the floppy hat that she’d been gifted one year. Putting it on her head, she checked her outfit in the mirror. She’d chosen a bright blue tank top that highlighted her eyes, the straps of swimsuit could be seen just enough. Over it, she wore her black, floral, kimono style cardigan over it to cover herself. Itw as one of her favorites that fell a bit long on her form. Her dark skinny jeans were on point for those trips and she finally slipped into her old sandals to finish it off. Making sure she had her large sunglasses as well, her high ponytail made the hat uncomfortable but it could be fixed at school. She was already running late.
Running out to her car, she’d have to skip the coffee this morning, but Lin had been surprising her with a coffee on her desk lately. She really needed to remember to thank her properly for that, maybe with some homemade scones.
Thanks to a dicey streetlight call, really it was yellow and why would you have them there if not to get people through, she made it on time. Opening the choir room door, she moved to throw her purse in the desk drawer again and smiled when she saw not only the coffee but a croissant sitting on her desk as well.
“Lin Beifong you are a mind reader.” Kazami murmured as she sat back with both the coffee and the pastry. Tossing the hat on the desk for now, she enjoyed the quiet that had enveloped her.
Finishing the croissant, she got up and opened her classroom doors to let in her students. Parking her sunglasses on the top of her head, she smiled and complimented her students as they filed in with their own beach gear. Bolin of  course outdid them all with his old time full body swimsuit and inflatable rubber duck.
Sipping the coffee a little bit more, hoping for the caffeine to kick in, she walked over to the piano. “Alright, shall we--”
“Ms. Ikeda, isn’t that Ms. Beifong’s handwriting on your cup?” Asami asked, taking her normal spot next to the piano.
“I don’t know Miss Sato, perhaps you’d like to take it down to her and see for yourself?” Kazami raised a brow, fingers pressing into the keys. “And while you’re at it, perhaps you can pass along Korra’s sweatshirt to her.”
Asami blushed but immediately backed down from the teasing question. Smirking at the student, the older woman threw a hand up and started into their warm ups.
******
Lin wasn’t the most fond of homecoming, or spirit week. The themes were ridiculous and she was not one to enjoy making a fool of herself. Today’s wasn’t so bad though, she supposed. Slipping into the school, she wore a pair of jeans she had cuffed to her ankles and belted to better fit her waist. Tucked into those pants was a dark green tank top covered by an open, white cotton button down shirt that she had rolled to her elbows. Donning a pair of sneakers, she made quick strides to her classroom to see if the surprise coffee would be there again.
Flicking the lights on, she smiled when indeed, it was. Grabbing the cup, she smiled when she saw the little message on the cup.
See you for lunch duty! Enjoy!
~K
Grabbing the cup, she sipped it and hummed at the taste of her coffee. Grabbing the graded tests from her bag, she sat in her chair and took some time with her coffee. She ought to find out what Kazami’s coffee order is and surprise her with some. She was sure Kya knew it, the two had gone for coffee with Izumi. Or maybe one of the kids would know. Asami would tell her without too much guff.
Reaching for her pen, other things that needed to be graded sat on her desk calling to her. Starting in on those she contemplated the choir director. The woman seemed to be genuine in all of her interactions, she ought to look up a video of her performing one of these days. The more she talked to her, the more curious she had become.
At first, interactions stuck to the lunch room. Cordial comments slowly became banter. Banter became conversations and observations of students. From there it began to move out of the lunch room. It began with little moments of poking their heads in during each other’s office hours, walking each other out at the end of the day, and coordinating to stand around at things together. They bonded over a shared love of enjoyment of obscure books that made them think, and trashy romance novels that made them laugh, old time movies, the fact that neither could stand Raiko as principal but weren’t about to leave their students to him, and the fact that coffee was the superior drink only next to a good aged red wine.
Humming to herself, she looked up when a knock sounded through her office and she saw Mako standing there. “Hey kid, come on in.”
“Hi chief, I was wondering if I could get you to explain this again. I’m not getting it.” Mako said, stepping into the room and set his bag down.
“Sure, You have your book?” Lin asked, reaching for her glasses. The homework could wait a little longer. “Alright, show me where you’re getting lost.”
********
When Lin strode into the cafeteria, she smirked when she saw Kazami, this time wearing her hat, and her large sunglasses on her face.
“Now that’s a look.” Lin commented, chuckling slightly at the indignant look Kazami threw back at her.
“I will have you know I am a peak fashion icon amongst the other teachers. Besides, you need one of these hats worse than I do.” Kazami pointed out, reaching up to pull the sunglasses off for now.
There they were, there were those damn eyes that seemed to lure her in. “If you say so. At least we don’t have kids coming in just their swimsuits.”
“You must not have had Bolin in your class yet.”
“...please don’t tell me…”
“Oh yes, complete with an inflated rubber duck. The good news is that it’s an older suit so he’s covered.”
“Spirits give me strength.”
Kazami lost it then, laughing at the horrified look on Lin’s face. A hand reached out to rest on Lin’s toned armed and the grey haired woman smiled at the other.
“Glad you find it so hilarious.” Lin rolled her eyes, crossing her arms.
“The look on your face is priceless! Oh, I wish I’d had my camera.” Kazami wiped the corner of her eyes from the tears that had formed. “Your outfit is great though, I meant to tell you. The green does great things for your eyes.”
Lin felt a blush cross her cheeks, and murmured a quiet thanks to the other as they kept one eye on their students. “Speaking of this homecoming crap, are you going to the big game tonight?”
“I don’t know, are you?” Kazami asked, looking over at her. “They’re not really my thing normally but if you’re going and want some company I’d show up.”
“You don’t have to, a couple of the kids in my class asked me to go tonight. I can go on my own though.” Lin shrugged, she’d done it often enough. But a part of her really hoped that she’d go.
“No, I’d like to go. I can support the band students, a couple of them are in my choir classes as well, and besides, someone has to make sure you don’t get too grumpy.” Kazami teased, nudging her. Digging her granola bar out of her pocket, she handed half to Lin with a small smile.
Returning the gesture, Lin took the granola bar offered to her and bit into it. It’d become their tradition. One would bring a bar to eat and they’d split it. Hers tended to be nut and fruit based with either chocolate or peanut butter drizzled on it. Lin’s tended to be more protein based, but found herself leaning towards ones that were a little sweeter as they started to share more lunch duties together.
“Do you want to meet at the school tonight?” Lin asked, finishing a bite of the granola bar.
“Actually, do you want to meet somewhere? We could grab pizza then head over.” Kazami offered, moving to toss the wrapper for the bar in the trash. “Besides, trying to find anyone at those games is impossible.”
Lin blinked and felt her heart rate pick up. It wasn’t a date. Was it? No, surely she wouldn’t just drop it that simply if it was. Would she? Shit, now she was taking too long to reply.
“Sure, that sounds great.”
“Great! I’ll shoot you an email this afternoon with my number. I definitely want to go home and change into something a bit warmer to sit out in the evening air in.” Kazami beamed at Lin.
“Here, I have my phone with me.” Lin answered, digging into her pocket for it. Handing it over, she let Kazami put her number in and watched as she called herself.
“There, that’s perfect.” Hearing the bell sound, Kazami smiled at Lin. Reaching up, she took her hat and put it on Lin’s head and chuckled at the look. “I’ll text you the place. Enjoy the hat.”
*********
“Did you see that?!” Bolin asked, practically bouncing in his seat.
“Ikeda definitely gave her number to Beifong!” Korra grinned as the group stood to head to class.
“I wonder if they’re going on a date tonight.”
“I doubt it, Beifong promised to be at the game tonight.”
“It’s the weekend, idiot. They could still go out.”
“Oh my-- she gave her the hat!”
“Everything is going according to plan.”
“We’ll have to plan our next moves carefully though.”
“This ship will sail before the end of the year.”
*********
Spirits, what had she been thinking? Kazami sighed and rubbed her face. They were just going to pizza as colleagues, newly found friends. Right? Sure, Lin was attractive, there was no denying that. You’d be stupid not to acknowledge it. She also had a wicked sense of humor when you dug around for it. And apparently a sweet side. But it wasn’t a date. Was it?
Well, fuck.
“Just keep it casual.” Kazami muttered to herself.
Keeping the same dark wash skinny jeans, she pulled on one of the black t-shirts she had in her closet with the gold “Republic City High Choir” printed on it in a not completely terrible cursive font. On the back of it she had “Director” printed. Most of the other kids with this one had their section. It was a whole thing last year. Throwing a dark cardigan over it, she slipped into ankle boots before finally releasing her hair from it’s high ponytail. Running fingers through it, she enjoyed the soft waves that she managed to tease out of it and shook it out. Grabbing a blanket from one of the hall closets, the weather had said it was going to be one of the colder nights tonight, she headed out to her car.
Lin waited outside of the pizza shot, leaning against the old brick easily. She’d kept the jeans and sneakers on, and she also kept the green tank top, but had pulled on a warmer sweater over it. Seeing Kazami’s  car pull up behind hers, she smiled and pushed away from the building before walking to her car to open the door for her.
“Why thank you, my good lady.” Kazami smiled and stepped out of the car.
“I haven’t seen that one.” Lin said, pointing at her shirt.
“They were for a trip we took last year.” Kazami answered, leading the way over to the building.
********
Eating pizza, Kazami learned that Lin preferred her pizza spicy if possible and was a meat eater. She also would pair it with a lighter beer, that was unexpected, but fascinated Kazami. She preferred a pizza slice covered in vegetables, and if that wasn’t available, just a simple cheesy slice would always do the trick as well. Following Lin’s example with the beer, the two grabbed a table and dug into their food. Kazami insisted on buying dinner since it was her idea in the first place.
The topics remained light, after all, they’d be heading out soon for the game. Questions about lessons, when the next concert was and if Kazami needed some help with setting up the choir shell, how the math team was going and were they thinking about cooperating with the new engineering team that met up after school.
Finishing their dinner, they stood from the table and walked back to their cars.
“Why don’t you ride with me over? We can come back for your car once the game is over.” Lin offered when Kazami had headed for her own vehicle.
“That’s not a bad idea, let me just grab the blanket I threw in here for tonight.” Kazami agreed, pulling the door of her car open to grab it.
Hurrying over to Lin again, she climbed into the car and settled in it. She wasn’t surprised at all with how clean the inside of Lin’s car was. Everything was pristine. Enjoying the subtle eucalyptus and lavender smell she’d picked for it, Kazami settled and held the blanket close to herself.
“So do you go to this game every year?” Kazami asked, looking over at her.
“Almost. Usually have a student or two that asks me to go and support them.” Lin shrugged, easily easing them into traffic.
The radio played something quietly, a soft jazz if Kazami was picking it up right. Enjoying the easy quiet between them, she hummed along with the different instruments until they pulled into the parking lot.
********
Kazami had no idea what was going on while watching the game. All she knew was that she was cheering when Lin did, leaning over when she tried to explain things. She ended up with the band around half time, chuckling and speaking with the band director, hugging her kids that were also in choir.
The green eyed woman watched Kazami and felt herself smiling. The woman had no idea what was going on with the game but supported the students all the same. She made sure to see her students who played in the band, in her element and talking about the music that would be played for the halftime production. But she also made sure to get back to Lin before being gone too long.
“How’re they holding up?” Lin asked looking over at her.
“They’re great! The show is going to be great, I’ve seen them rehearse a couple of times.” Kazami answered, plopping down in her spot.
“I was going to go down to see my students, they’ve got the longer half time with the whole court thing. You mind if I go down there?” Lin asked, pulling her jacket closer to herself.
“Not at all, I think I’ll get us some tea actually. I’ve got a stash back in my classroom, and some honey. You want some?” Kazami asked, offering Lin a smile.
“That would be great, if you have jasmine I’d take some of that.” Lin answered, moving to stand.
“I do, and I’ll meet you back here.” Kazami answered , leaving her blanket to save their spots.
Tucked away in her classroom, she hummed to herself, filling her kettle and turned it on. Digging around in her cupboards, she managed to come up with two mugs. Dropping tea bags into them, she waited until the water boiled before pouring it in. Squeezing some honey in, she grabbed both of them before making her way back to the stadium.
Kazami made it back to their spot first and huddled on the bench. Smiling, she watched Lin talk with a couple of the kids before wrapping the blanket around herself. Setting Lin’s tea down, she brought hers up, holding it between both hands and took in the warm chai smells before taking her first sip.
When Lin returned to the bleachers, she took the tea herself and held it with a relieved sound. “Spirits it’s getting cold out.”
“There’s a reason I brought this along.” Kazami pointed out, watching Lin a moment before offering her one end of the blanket. “Come on, it’s warmer under here.”
Lin hesitated a moment before scooting closer and took the other side of the blanket. Their sides pressed together, it really was warmer. Her heart thudded gently as Azami’s light floral perfume hit her nose.
“You trust me?” Lin asked suddenly, looking over at Azami.
“Well that question worries me, but yes.” Azami answered, a confused look crossing her features.
“Come on.” Lin said, standing and reached to help her up.
********
Leading her through old staircases and up the older side of the building, Lin finally pushed a door open and led Kazami out onto the roof. The sun was going down, deep reds and pinks streaked across the golden sky as dark purples began to poke through as well.
“Lin...this spot is incredible.” Kazami said, turning to look at her.
“I used to come out here with Aang, back when I was their age.” Lin answered, coming to join her. Sitting down, Lin let her legs dangle off the edge, a hand reaching up to help Kazami down to sit next to her.
“I always forget you knew and grew up with that family.” Kazami said, settling next to Lin and offered her the blanket again.
They sat in companionable silence for some time, drinking their team and watching as the sky began to transition from the warm day into what appeared to be a cool night. Watching the kids, Kazami fell into the trap that sitting on a roof seemed to hold for people. She began to confess.
“I never wanted any of this you know.” Kazami murmured, staring out at the sky.
Lin frowned and turned to the other woman. “What?”
“I never wanted to be an opera singer. I enjoyed music, and singing, but I never wanted to spend my life doing that.” Kazami murmured, setting her mug aside, she pulled the blanket closer and sighed softly. “My mother wanted to go into it, but she didn’t have the voice for it. My grandmother sang and it was just...expected. When she found out I could sing...I was forced into lessons when I was five. I wasn’t allowed to go out often because I had lessons.”
“You were just a kid though.”
“And my mother didn’t care.” Kazami answered, a shrug coming from her. “I didn’t have siblings, and my father locked himself in his study. When I wanted to go outside and play, or attend things like prom instead of a recital, I was guilt tripped. How could I not accept this, after all the effort she put into this. By the time I was old enough to realize it, I was trapped. I was signed up with a company. Hiding who I was because opera singers have doting husbands. They let their male counterparts woo them and their managers walk on them.”
A hand reached over for Kazami’s slender one. Lin squeezed her fingers between her own. “What did you want?”
Smiling, she leaned into Lin and sighed gently. “I wanted to own a bookshop. I would fill it with trinkets and maps from all over after I traveled. A safe space for all, with a little bakery.”
“I can see you in that, exactly like that.” Lin murmured, moving to lean her head against Kazami’s. “Why’d you go into teaching? Why not open your shop?”
“Being in the professional world...I saw so many kids like me. Trapped in a world of music that they didn’t want. That didn’t want them as they were. I wanted to give them that safe space. To be themselves, to love music, to give them the option to go into it long  term, or just have a place where they could sing and have a break from other classes. As much as I wanted that shop I wanted to also help those kids.” Kazami answered, closing her eyes as she enjoyed the warmth and the comfort the other woman offered. “I didn’t want kids to break down like I did. To fall so deep into their own darkness to the point that they hated their craft.”
Lin had heard about the breakdown. About how Kazami had simply stopped in the middle of a production, walked off the stage, and closed the door on the auditorium. Her mother had publicly announced Kazami was dead to her. Disowned and written out when Kazami confirmed she was gay. She’d heard her talking to kids about the depression she’d suffered where she hadn’t been able to get out of bed. How confused she’d been about her own identity away from music. Who was she if she wasn’t an opera singer? And yet, here Lin sat with a woman who bent over backwards for her students and her friends. Who tried to do so much for everyone and be there for anyone that needed her.
And Lin understood so much of that story.
“You know who my mother is. Everyone does. She was a single mom raising us and I get that she was busy. My sister and I both understood it. The only difference is that nothing I did was ever enough. I was valedictorian, I was captain of our sports team, I went straight into college.” Lin murmured and sighed, shaking her head. “Suyin was the one that skipped school. Did anything that she could to get attention.”
“Well, good to know some things haven’t changed.” Azami said, before she could realize it. Suyin had started at the school around the same time she had. Needless to say, while she tried to be polite, she really wasn’t too fond of Suyin. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean…”
“No, you’re definitely right.” Lin said, a bitter chuckle escaped from her. “I was dropping something off at school and caught Suyin trying to skip class and smoke spirits knows what. Tried to go after her and catch her but she threw a branch or some piece of metal she’d been holding, I didn’t pay too much attention to it, but it happened so fast and it sliced into my face. Mom took me to the hospital, nothing was written into Su’s file, she was sent to the grandparents who spoiled her. Mom quit at the end of the year. Neither one ever mentioned the event. I haven’t spoken properly to them since.”
She waited for Kazami to turn to her, to tell her that she should make things right with her family. That she should just forgive them at this point. But she didn’t. Instead, Kazami squeezed her hands and interlaced their fingers together. Instead of a pitying look, she offered her one of understanding and acceptance.
“Well, you’re not on your own anymore.”
The statement hung in the air, whether she meant it as friends, or something more, neither of them knew, but in that moment, as the game ended and they stayed up on the roof to continue to bear their souls to one another. Laughing quietly, huddling together, as the thread of the universe began to tie their fates together in a neat bow.

Having just watched the Lord of the Rings films I thought I’d give a nice little list of some random things I enjoy and maybe a few that I don’t (This is not a book vs film analysis. This is just me being silly).
This one sparks joy
Sam and Frodo are shown stumbling home after having a good aul’ knees up at the local pub just before Gandalf arrives to tell Frodo that, in his house, there is an item that could very well bring about the end of the world as they know it. Oh and he needs to leave right now because the single most evil being in Middle Earth has Frodo’s name and address. Like, the two lads are drunk when this happens! Love it XD
Sean Astin’s all over the place accent
Hobbit dad Boromir <3<3<3
Gimli going on and on about Dwarvish hospitality, somehow completely missing the major ominous vibe that the entrance into Moria gives off. And the corpses. He got so excited that, for a minute, he lived in a world where he wasn’t surrounded by corpses
Sean Bean’s delivery of the “They have a cave troll” line is just perfection
Orlando Bloom’s faces in the background
Aragorn telling Sam to go find Athelas. Nothing to do with the scene itself. It just always makes me think of Donkey looking for the blue flower with red thorns XD
Aragorn is very much turned on by Arwen putting a sword to his throat
One of the Goblins (?) makes a great face when the first Uruk-Hai is born(??). He’s like what the fuck what the fuck
Saruman gives this newly born(??) Uruk his orders in the main room of his tower while said Uruk is still stark naked and absolutely filthy... It’s so odd I can’t help but love it. At least give him a second XD
I think it means we also get to see an Uruk bum?
Saruman has lovely nails. I need to know where he gets them done
The Uruk-Hai don’t wear pants/leggings. Sky’s out, thighs out, boys! (Don’t blame them. They each seem to have my entire body weight worth of muscle on each leg. I’d show ‘em off too)
The main Uruk has a high pony tail. Fashion icon.
Sam delivers a speech so touching that even Gollum looks like he’s about to start crying
We get a close up of that moth Gandalf speaks to. Just a few moments of nothing but one of these fuzzy little friends. Best scene
The rawest line ever spoken has to be when Sam is asked if he’s Frodo’s bodyguard and he responds with “His Gardener”.
The delivery of every one of Sam’s speeches
Just Sam in general T_T
The score! It’s just...perfect (however you feel about a live action Silm adaptation, surely you must agree that we do need a Silm score? I need a score for it!)
The fact that the ending is so perfectly bitter sweet that I my chest genuinely feels tight after having watched it T_T
This one does not spark joy
Why does nobody clean their nails???? Like, never mind Sauron, ye’re all going to die of preventable infectious diseases at this rate!!
The lack of Legolas going to fetch the sun :(
Actually, just the lack of book!Legolas’ nonsense in general
Liv Tyler whispers all her lines. She just...she whispers everything...and speaks so slowly... why???? please stop!
The giant, mud-covered amniotic sack thing that the Uruk-Hai are dug out of. What...what even is that?? I’m no expert, but I’m pretty certain that the orcs just fuck like the rest of us, no?
Denethor eating...I just did not need to see that. It was unnecessary.

Can the doll industry be saved?
“Child, things may not be spelled correctly but I had to make my point! I never look when I’m on a rant lol.”
Question that has been laying on my mind for quite sometime. Before this depression of what looks like “blind bag” galore! We used to have doll isles where you could find Monsters & Pony teenagers! It was a different time. Toy company’s at the moment try something different and it worked out for some and others not so much.
We can say that for a few years there has been a drought in the “fashion doll” department! Barbie went from glamour to farmer! And America’s new craze is no longer fairy tale children and icy princesses! It’s now a baby crazy!
Lol Surprise! Has become more then a “top toy” it’s officially become a pop culture phenomenon! With sales grossing higher everyday! MGA! Decided to put a holt on their once top toy that caused quite the controversy “Bratz” to work on something that captures the “Melanie Martinez” cry baby effect. Some themes go as far as. . Pop icons from Marilyn to Britney! And creepy witches to Oz! The line is creative and just like “bratz” the line has more then just dolls. . Bedding! Apparel! Doll house! Bouncy house! Party supplies And many more! I do believe that the lols have brought creativity and excitement for collectors! I do hope that they do what other companies such as “Moose toys” with the shoppie line! & Make them bigger! and more exciting play sets! The dolls have competition but no one is near! Not even the 60yr old blonde icon who’s tooken on MGA in the past can compete with its popularity of these tiny baby’s in platforms. MGA, also is kind of taking things to the next strange level with pooping unicorns! Yes! That’s right! Pooping unicorn dolls & slime! If you agree or not! They are taking every trend and throwing it into one toy!
Let’s talk Barbie: Though! If it were not for this blonde pop icon! We would not have any monsters/bratz/or lols! Barbie has always been about taking risk but also being somewhat an approacible toy for parents to love but hate. Let’s take a look at recent years! Of course Barbies popularity over the past few decades has plummeted! Dating all the way back to 2001 when dolls jeans got lower and shoes got higher! And even though “Life in the dream house” kind of saved the pop icon from her competition at the time like (Monster High / Frozen) even though both “Mattel” and now hasbro owns the rights to Disney princesses line & MH! Is kind of no longer. now with the competition slowing down! Barbie has only Barbie to focus and let’s just say she’s needs a lot more work. I myself a curvy individual, finds the different body’s / colors are wonderful. What I don’t find wonderful is that Barbie has become basic and boring! She’s tooken the bait and listened to what parents want! and has lost what once made her, her! Clothing has become very cheaply made! Everything is printed on fabric or molded and painted to the doll. Hair is thin! Make up!?! What make up! Now they have little things that are make up related but even the manufacturers are screwing up by durpy eyes and mouth being were the cheeks are. It’s gotten sloppy! No imagination! No creativity! Barbie could make a comeback and I do love all these sheros line of dolls but make Barbie glamours again! I’ve never been more disappointed with the line. Mattel hire these wonderful people such as it’salexb! SailorB! The work they put into styling and photography! It needs a new! Young and exciting group of people who care for the industry and the doll herself. Now! There are so many iconic people working for Mattel! I personally Just feel that people need to really see what’s going on. I’ve always wanted to design dolls and Barbie was one of the reasons I wanted to design in the first place. Barbie, needs a new creative direction and why hide what made Barbie so wonderful in the first place. Barbie can be a feminist and like pink! #barbie2020 come back to us!
Mattel brought back Polly Pocket! Needless to say she is cute but the line is just another pass in the wind. Dumbing down Polly and making her part of a new generation. Why! Moose toys has released Polly pocket sized shopkins shoppie ones and they are as close to 1993 Polly as we are gonna get. Adorable and colorful!
Boxy Girls : ehh! Cute idea! Not really executed properly. Enchantimals are in limbo! It’s only been 2 years since the line has been out! That’s not really looking good. Again! It goes back to painting on tops and bad quality. Jojo has become an icon to many with her songs and dolls but Hannah isn’t shaking yet!
I could be here for days talking and ranting about dolls but the industry is not completely a fail and the play is endless with lines like “Snapstars & Off the hook” I don’t know what needs to come but hasbro has to step up the game of one of the greatest doll line in history. Make better Disney princesses! Make them beautiful and fashionable and Ariel is my favorite! She doesn’t need a skirt around her tail! And hasbro please step it up! Ariel turns 30! Let’s do more. Hairdorables are cute for the moment but in all honesty! How long is this blind bag craze going to last! Even shopkins have become stagnant. Let’s pray for better! Hayden Williams, working on the bratz dolls for 2018 became controversial topic! but, he did a wonderful job and will see! Who knows! Maybe bratz will make a comeback in stores. Look at the craze of the bratz challenge made popular by Martin Cantos! We may see them hopping on shelves again!
Ps. Bring toys r us back!
My love and reason I started collecting “Monster High” has had such a fail over the last few years! You can no longer find them in stores! Good news that they were not painted out of the “Mattel” mural at toy fair! This year. And Mattel is working on their own tv network and they could possibly bring the ghouls back with high force! Fingers crossed.
Let’s hope that toys and dolls will get back to being wonderful again but fabric coast money and so dose production. Company’s can only do so much! Let’s see what the possibilities bring.

Mary McCartney: Sir Paul, growing up a Beatle’s daughter and Linda, my mother
She has a Beatle for a dad and an impressive portfolio including celebrity subjects and a portrait of the Queen. But it’s Mary McCartney’s mother, Linda, who has had the most influence on her life. Here she reveals why
The Times, January 26 2019
When Mary McCartney was in her early twenties, she remembers phoning her mother, Linda, in Sussex, home to the McCartney family after life in the Beatles, and announcing, “I’ve decided I want to become a photographer.” Her mother immediately gave her a Leica R. It has been 20 years since Linda McCartney’s death from breast cancer, which devastated her husband and their four children, and yet that camera is beside Mary McCartney today, as if representing Linda’s presence in her daughter’s life.
In the past 20 years, Mary McCartney has gone from being initially unsure – “I didn’t know how to work with lights at the beginning” – to being one of the most successful female photographers in the UK. Like her mother, who was the first woman to shoot a cover for Rolling Stone magazine, she has photographed icons. These include the Queen. She has worked for magazines and advertising campaigns and, in the past few years, has gradually shifted her focus towards exhibitions, books and making films. She has, in many ways, followed the professional path trodden by Linda, an inspiration to her not only because she was an early activist for vegetarianism, but because of the nature of her work. As McCartney puts it, “Capturing memories in a moment.”
“At times I have been professionally pigeon-holed by people presuming that everything I’ve got within my career is because of my name,” McCartney says. “But that just isn’t realistic.
“No jobs or assignments have ever come because of that. I don’t dwell on it. But the challenge is that I’m close to my family. I don’t want not to be able to embrace that, but then I don’t want to be pigeon-holed as the daughter of Paul McCartney rather than Mary the photographer, with a new exhibition or a book. I’ve reached the point where I’m not shying away from it. It’s more how other people deal with it, rather than how I do.
“My mum was a professional photographer before she ever knew my dad, and that was how they met. A huge amount of her work was done years before she met him, but a certain number of people would still say that she’s a celebrity photographer who started when she married him, because of his connections. It’s understandable why it happens, but it’s a fine balance.”
I feel slightly guilty here because, when I first looked through McCartney’s impressive body of work, I did assume she got a few celebrity sittings over a lunch or two at the McCartneys’ kitchen table. What with her famous pa and her famous sister, the fashion designer Stella McCartney.
For the record, she says she does not have celebrities on a Rolodex. “A lot of the celebrity photographs I have done have been through being asked to do them. They’re not my friends or people I know. Maybe it is that people know I am not going to take advantage of them and try to get a photograph that is going to be sensationalised in some way. I don’t think it’s necessarily to do with my background. I wouldn’t particularly connect with someone as a celebrity, because I’m not an actress.”
We are in McCartney’s studio because she is about to publish a book of pictures called Paris Nude, an extraordinarily intimate nude study in black and white of a stand-up called Phyllis Wang, whom McCartney knew only vaguely before arriving in her apartment in Paris on a hot day last summer. The book came about after a happy misunderstanding in which McCartney asked Wang to model for a commercial project and signed her text “xxx”, taken by Wang as a request for her to pose for explicit shots. By the time the misunderstanding was cleared up, they both had begun to think, “What a great idea!”
A few months later, McCartney was in Wang’s apartment asking her to take her knickers off, an embarrassing moment for photographer and subject that took a bit of working up to, via the jeans. “I was like, ‘You’re going to have to take the knickers off now.’ And they’re sort of pushed down the sofa. You can see them pushed in.”
By definition, the pictures are intimate. Wang is naked on the sofa, by the fireplace, writhing about in the shower and in the bath, where McCartney’s lens zooms in to swirling water so that the viewer looks on and is tempted to ask, blimey, is that a pair of buttocks there? Let’s not dwell on Wang’s reappearing lady garden. It is part of McCartney’s fascination with the female form and follows on neatly from her first exhibition, Off Pointe: a Photographic Study of the Royal Ballet After Hours, for which she photographed ballet dancers in real life, smoking fags, drinking Coke, going to the cash machine and, yes, having a bath. It is, McCartney says, intimacy with her subject that she craves. For the viewer, it is permitted voyeurism.
There is no doubt Mary McCartney gets people to do things for her that perhaps they might have previously ruled out. She shows me a book of her pictures called Twelfth Night, featuring Mark Rylance backstage in white tights and face make-up. “He just said, ‘Want to stay?’ And he never says that.
“I think I do meet people and then I’m intrigued, like, who is that real person? That if I got into their world more, my immediate perceptions might change.
“There is definitely a connection with my background. I think before I would shy away from it and go, ‘There is no connection.’ But now I kind of think, ‘Why am I so interested in that?’ It has to be something.”
In other words, being judged only as a McCartney and not as the person beyond the name informs her work. She wants the truth, the real story, and she wants the trust.
The family famously grew up in Sussex, the children riding ponies and attending comprehensive school. Twentieth-century legends flitted in and out of the house, hanging out by the Aga and eating Linda’s vegetarian food – so it’s not exactly Mum or Dad coming home from the accountancy firm and slogging to pay the mortgage. But in many ways, the children were protected from any notion of what their own celebrity meant to the world beyond them. “We used to live in a very close environment. We wouldn’t have a lot of staff around, so we would wash our own dishes. And when I rode, we used to brush and tack up the horse ourselves.
“I know it’s been documented over the years that we children are really normal, but it’s probably more about being real and human. Maybe it’s that we have values. If I stay with a friend, I strip the bed. I make sure that my children hang up their towels and don’t chuck them on the floor. They need to be good humans when they go out into the world and be nice to people, considerate.
“I think the fact I went to a comprehensive school means I have met lots of different types of people. I have a very close set of friends from when I was 12. Then I have a close set of friends from when I moved to London as a teenager and I’ve collected some new ones along the way. I think that implies that I haven’t changed dramatically from then, but I think I’ve developed over the years and grown in confidence and understanding.
“What it is for me is that my upbringing of being in a bit of fishbowl, being looked at and watched, means that very close relationships with my family and friends are so important. I kind of crave that [feeling] when I’m working. I like relationships.”
I was very interested in what McCartney would be like when the boot was on the other foot. For somebody who invites trust, how trusting can she be? The early signs in the lead-up to the production that is a photoshoot were ominous. The business of so many of us – journalist, photographer, assistants, make-up artist – being invited into McCartney’s world was not without discussion. Frankly, I was as nervous as she says she was when she arrived in Paris to photograph Wang with her kit off. “You look quite calm,” she says to me, smiling. Actually, I’m not that calm. But nobody frisked me at the door or grilled me about my questions. While she was upstairs getting ready, her dog, Paddy, sniffed around my legs.
McCartney is tiny in person. She is dressed in clothes by Stella, naturellement. She is a very generous model. “I don’t see the point of agreeing to have your picture taken and then being difficult,” she says. “It’s a collaboration. It must be intimidating to take a picture of a photographer, but then on the other hand you can collaborate more.”
While her style is very cool, she can also look a bit, well, chilly, something that often defines her sister in pictures (no doubt Stella is a poppet when she’s got her slippers on). However, she is very happy to smile to requests of “a bit warmer”. Actually, as it turns out, she’s homely, has an active role in her mother’s vegetarian food company, for which she has just made a film, cooks mountains of food for pleasure and loves Bake Off. Who knew? Those pesky perceptions again.
----------
The first defining moment of Mary McCartney’s life was leaving home for London. As the eldest of Paul’s three children with Linda (he adopted Heather, Linda’s child by another relationship), she was the first to leave. “When I arrived in London [being a McCartney] wasn’t really a thing. More was being a vegetarian. I probably defended myself on that more than anything else during that era. It’s exciting that is no longer the world.”
She worked first as a picture researcher before moving to edit her mother’s archive for an exhibition in New York. Seeing herself and her tastes reflected back at her in Linda’s photographs was empowering, she explains. “I’d always grown up watching her take pictures, and I was looking through these contact sheets and they were so inspiring and varied, like a diary. The biggest thing I like to do is capture memories and moments. I realised we had a very similar sensibility. Looking at these pictures I thought, ‘Oh my God, that is exactly how I am as well.’ ”
The gift of the Leica followed, consolidated by a technical course in how to use it and then a few years establishing herself, gaining confidence as she went along.
She made new friends, partied in Soho, the Groucho Club, the Colony Club, Gerry’s. “If you meet someone, you don’t immediately say who you are or what your background is. It’s only after time.”
The second defining moment of her life was when, aged 27, McCartney was faced with Linda’s diagnosis of breast cancer. “I hoped that she would get better, that there would be a different outcome,” she says sadly. “She got on with everything and she looked great. She had a sparkle in her eye the whole time. There are pictures that I took at the time that I thought, if she makes it through this, then I’ll publish them. But the fact that she didn’t means I won’t.”
On the way to the loo I spot a painting of Linda by Paul. She’s wearing a yellow blouse, sitting in a yellow armchair beside a yellow baby grand, which matches the colour of her hair. The pencil inscription on the mount reads, “All the love in the world to my Mary, love Dad. March 06.” It was a gift given eight years after Linda died. Elsewhere there is a beautiful photograph of a young Stella looking into her sister’s lens while enclosed in Linda’s arms. It seems such a poignant picture – perhaps one of those that have gone unpublished. “Afterwards, we all looked after each other,” McCartney explains, “and we all got through it the best we could.”
The loss is still there – it feels palpable – but she has a coping mechanism. “What I really tried to do was think of the positives of the situation. It was not a positive situation at all, but the things that I take from it are at least that I had time to spend with her, and I spent a lot of time with her through the last couple of years. We talked a lot, very openly, and we were really close.
“In that way I don’t have regrets, because that comforts me and I know that she was as comfortable as she could be.”
In 2015, McCartney exhibited her pictures next to those of her mother’s in a show called Mother Daughter at the Gagosian gallery in New York. It was a tribute to the person who had most profoundly shaped her life.
It is Linda’s character, her essence, that McCartney says she aspires to. “She was a really great character, really fun, great sense of humour. No one else like her. Funky, rebellious and didn’t care what people thought about her. I haven’t met many people like that. I used to think, ‘Does she actually mean it when she says she doesn’t care what people think?’ But I know she actually, really didn’t care. I think for anyone who loses someone they’re close to, it’s weirdly good to feel so sad, because it means you cared about the person that much. I think if someone had that much personality, they always stay with you to a degree, because you’ll be in certain situations and you’ll always be able to imagine what they’ll say. I try and hold on to that rather than thinking about some of the more distressing things.”
McCartney was 29 when Linda died. Towards the end of that same year she married Alistair Donald, her first husband, and by the following April of 1999, she became a mother herself. She concedes there might be a connection between losing a mother and having a child. “I don’t overthink those things, but it does seem likely. Other people I know who have lost a parent do often end up having a child soon after. I don’t really know what that connection is, but I feel like it is probably there.”
Her second son followed three and a half years later, but ultimately the marriage did not last. “I lost my mother, got married, had a baby. I think of it as a shame not to have stayed married ... Relationships are the most intriguing thing to get right.”
In 2008, she had her third son with the director Simon Aboud, whom she married in 2010, and a fourth in 2011. “I didn’t plan to have a big family; I’m not a big planner. I like to have things develop as I move along.”
Three of her four boys are still at home. The eldest, Arthur, is 19 and at college. “I like mayhem,” she says. “I can be in a situation with a lot going on and I like it. I’m happy to have lots of conversations going on at the same time. I like things to be a bit messy, a bit unpredictable and not too preplanned.”
The children all appreciate their grandfather, “but it’s not something you really think about. At school they’ll do songs that have been written by Dad, so I think they’re very proud as well. For me, rather than it being, ‘Oh, my dad’s Paul McCartney,’ it’s more, ‘What an amazing artist he is,’ and how much he has achieved. How level-headed he is, and what a great relationship we have. It’s all those kinds of things. If I see a picture or hear something on the radio, I’m impressed [for him] rather than thinking, ‘Oh. I’m in this family.’ ”
Turning 50 in August is not meaningful to her, but she does admit maturity is. “I think I appreciate it all more now. I appreciate my relationship and my friends. I appreciate my career. I think that’s the thing. You don’t when you are younger. Now, it is what makes me happy. Like, I’ll be walking down the street and a song will come on and it will make me appreciate being alive.”
As I plan to leave for my journey home, McCartney asks, “Would you like to go to the loo?” Actually, yes, I say. I’ve got a long trip. She laughs at her mother-hen-ishness.
After I wash my hands, I turn to see a photograph propped up on the lavatory. Is that Barack Obama there with a smiling Sir Paul? And then I spot all the McCartneys with Michelle O on the end. Blow me down, it’s a McCartney/Obama line-up.
As I leave, one of McCartney’s oldest friends arrives. She too is very smiley.
“It was she who also made me become a photographer,” McCartney explains, “because when we were young, she’d take pictures of us all together and she’d chop our heads off.”
They’re doing a bit of admin. “Apparently being a photographer means you can vouch for a visa,” McCartney says, killer-heeled boots now kicked off her feet.
As she says, it’s all real, but it’s not normal.
Paris Nude by Mary McCartney is published by Heni on February 7

stranger things thoughts n spoilers under the cut! i really enjoyed this season.
-one of my favorite things about st has always been the aesthetic of the show. the eighties-inspired visuals are always so strong and this season looked especially stunning— that mall?? holy shit. i love seeing vintage logos and the fashion (el’s look this season was so kickass) and the color palette this season was so beautiful. it felt like summer (and fireworks were popping outside of my house when i watched the finale it was very atmospheric)
-the transitions between scenes really worked for me, especially the comedic ones (“it’s impossible to break in!!1!!”) they built tension and felt very cheesy eighties scifi. the whole evil russians thing also felt very period
the adults
-i’ve never been super huge on jopper but this season won me over. besides all the fighting, they did make a really good team.
-murray and alexei were hilarious and i loved their duo, especially juxtaposed with joyce and hopper. the scene in the car was so funny and then the emotional whiplash of the woodpecker scene man :(
-like everyone else with a pulse i am in love with winona ryder, and she really shined this season. joyce grew so much as a character without disregarding her trauma, she’s a badass and man after that finale she deserves a goddamn break
scoops troop
-god erica was so good. all of her lines were gold and i love that her and dustin kind of bonded by the end (THE MY LITTLE PONY THESIS!!!). i think someone needs to make a gifset of nancy giving dustin a pep talk at the snow ball and then erica insulting him
-the erica/steve/robin/dustin dynamic was just overall really good.
-i esp liked dustin taking care of robin and steve when they were drugged— that was really good.
-so let’s talk about robin. i was so ready for her to be one dimensional and just like? steve’s girlfriend or whatever. and after the first couple episodes i was already impressed— robin was fucking awesome!! she’s a badass!! translating the russian code, she was so funny, maya hawke did an amazing job with her character. and when she came out??? man i fucking lost it. i paused the show and called someone and just said STRANGER THINGS SAID GAY RIGHTS and she said she didn’t want spoilers so i hung up. i did not expect them to go there with robin, but i’m so glad they did.
the party
-i think mike and eleven are very cute but watching them make out at the beginning made me a little uncomfortable? people sexualizing these kids (esp mbb) has been a problem so it just felt a little icky. but mike serenading el was great and very much relatable and his love speech (the thing old people say to each other) was precious.
-i loved seeing them just!! be teenagers!!
-max and el going to the mall and madonna playing and el starting to find herself was so cathartic
-the kids had some really iconic moments but “I DUMP YOUR ASS” was one of the best, and max+el’s moment on the bus after was very very good
-so, will. i’m upset that he didn’t have much to do this season after those first couple episodes. but the fight with mike and him destroying castle byers really hit me. noah schnapp is so damn talented— he captured so perfectly that feeling of alienation from your friends, that feeling of realizing childhood is really over now. as a queer person that hit me especially hard
jancy
-i felt for nancy this season, and watching her deal with misogynist pigs in the workplace made me respect her on a new level. everyone on this show deserves a goddamn break but i want to see nancy succeed.
-i wasn’t sure if i would enjoy the whole gang being separated for this season but i ended up enjoying all of the storylines and it made the payoff at the end when they were all reunited really cool.
-i was in a play my junior year and the main character was always referencing his girlfriend— SUSIE BABY— and she didn’t show up until the very end of the show. so when dustin started talking about his girlfriend suzie from camp i immediately thought of that play, and the ending had me floored. i really love that gaten got to sing and i loved everyone’s reactions and i esp loved how campy that duet was
-a lot of people are upset with billy’s death, but i think that’s what had to happen. it felt real. or at least, as real as heroic death by otherworldly monster can get. honestly i was kind of indifferent to the whole billy thing this season despite it being a main plot point, but dacre’s acting was very very good
-the hopper voiceover at the end really had me crying in my camp know where shirt from target. man,
going forward:
-i really don’t think hopper is dead. they didn't actually show him die?? and the post credits scene.. i feel like it would have been a bigger deal if they weren’t planning on coming back to this next season
-s4 nancy in a blazer a la working girls. shoulder pads baby!!
-will is going to have to talk to mike about the fight that was never addressed.
-i want more of robin! robin coming out and robin maybe getting a girlfriend and robin and steve being friends (thank god steve has a friend his own age god).
-those goodbyes felt really short— i bet fall or christmas 2020/1986 the byers are going to be back in town visiting or something and shit is going to go down.
i probably could come up with more to say but i want to go get sonic before happy hour is over

LIFE ON THE MOON HC
Robert Grossman (A/CVR) Robert Grossman
From an artist who reveled in illustrating “the un-illustratable,” a historical graphic novel based on the “Great Moon Hoax,” the most successful newspaper hoax ever. In 1835, New York newspaper The Sun published a series of six articles declaring the discovery of life-and even civilization–on the Moon, which the paper attributed to the famous contemporary astronomer Sir John Herschel. According to The Sun, the lunar inhabitants included unicorns, bison, bipedal tail-less beavers, and intelligent humanoids with bat-like wings.
Life on the Moon is a full-length graphic novel capturing this mythical world. Creator Robert Grossman said the book is set in a time when “many of the signal achievements of the 19th Century still lay well in the future, Andrew Jackson was president, the steamboat was the summit of technology, and news traveled slowly.” The unfettered novel includes real historical figures such as P.T. Barnum, Jean Jacques Audubon, Lorenzo Da Ponte, Charles Goodyear, and Edgar Allan Poe.
