I rewatched Zuko and Azula's Agni Kai recently and it's left me wondering ā€“ when Zuko begins to goad Azula into striking him with lightning, was he making the decision to kill her?
Because had Azula shot lightning directly at him like he planned and not at Katara, the most forthright implication to me is that he was intending to strike Azula with her own lightning. And Azula, for all her mastery, would not have been able to counter that.
On the other hand, maybe he wasn't planning to kill her at all and was simply planning to redirect it elsewhere (similar to what he did with Ozai). But given the tone of tragedy throughout the Agni Kai, the fact that they both acknowledge that this fight will be "the end" to them, I don't think it's inaccurate to read Zuko's actions as him preparing to kill Azula, even though an Agni Kai doesn't have to end with death (and in canon it didn't). Also, why goad her into striking him with lightning if he wasn't planning on doing something intentional with it? If anything, it adds another layer to the tragedy to me, because I don't believe Zuko wants to kill her. And it stands in such contrast to the way that Azula desperately wants to kill him.
I also think that there would have even been something sadly poetic in that sort of demise for Azula should the Agni Kai had gone this direction: Azula, struck down by her preferred sub-skill. Azula, struck down by the very bolt of lightning that she intended to kill her brother with. Azula, struck down by her own power.

You know who they did the dirtiest in Arcane? Apart from Vander that is.
The answer is Mel. My baby girl lost her two boyfriends and I'm tired of pretending like I'm okay about it.
She gave everything to their dream.
"She wanted to use them." YES! At first! At first she thought they were a great investment. Then she came to love them with more sincerity and more care than many other relationships in the show. Sure some of the toxic things she'd learnt from her home tended to seep into the relationship, but she did everything she could to prune that away.
She loved them. She poured everything into their dream. Everything into helping Jayce get rid of Heimerdinger when he wanted to ban the research that could help Viktor, everything to help them both vote for peace and make the council decision unanimous. Everything to get back to them, after getting kidnapped! šŸ„ŗ After going through every version of hell, she immediately gravitated to where she would find them, šŸ˜ find the only loves that had ever accepted her without necessarily demanding anything in return.
And Riot just took that away. And I'm tired of acting like I'm okay with it.
I'm tired of everyone saying Mel deserves better than Jayce and Viktor, tired of people shipping her with people she's never met (especially when the aim is just to give her someone who is not Jayce or Viktor), I'm tired of the strong independent black woman stereotype following Mel around when it's the LAST thing that she wants when she only just learnt to be soft with Jayce and open with her heart once again. I am tired of people calling her a manipulator as if her character arc ended there, as if she did not unlearn toxic love and traded it for the gentle bond she then had with her two favourite scientists.
I'm tired of people not acknowledging that she had to leave Piltover, not just because the Medarda family needed her, but also because her boys were gone. The family she had finally made for herself, the family she was willing to abandon her family name for. They're gone and I don't think Riot will ever be kind enough to give them back to her.
Everyone else, even Ekko sort of has a family to fall back to. Mel has successfully lost everyone. The fact that Lest is the closest person to Mel left says way too much about how awful this whole situation is.
And I am TIRED, I am so sick and TIRED, of people acting like she did not love Jayce and Viktor. I am so sick and tired of people acting like Jayce did not love her. It probably hurt him too to leave her behind.
The tragedy of them is that Jayce knew Mel still had the chance to refind her feet, but Viktor had only ever had Jayce, and Jayce would NEVER leave Viktor alone. And it hurts that Mel probably wished she could have gone with them, because now she has to start everything from scratch and barely anyone in the fandom acknowledges that side of her pain and I HATE IT!
(Jayce might have been created for Viktor in League Lore, but Mel was created for Jayce. šŸ„ŗšŸ˜ Mel was created to love Jayce and they took her baby away.) #HappyHare(Mel)WhereHaveYouBuriedAllYourChildren?TellMeSoISayšŸ˜

Why is Hera so hostile to Leto in a manner that she isn't with the other lovers of Zeus? I can't think of any other woman who was targeted so much by Hera. One could say she didn't want Leto to give birth because her children would be a competition to Hera's children, but why bother her even after she had already given birth? Is it because Leto herself is also a threat to Hera?
Sort of I guess?
I don't think Leto would ever be a threat to Hera's role as the queen of the gods but Hera might see her as a competitor for Zeus' affection, even though I think Zeus would not marry someone else and replace Hera.
The twins are definitely a big reason why Hera begrudged Leto - it is outright stated in the Callimachus Hymn to Delos that the reason Hera especially targeted Leto was because she was told that Apollo would be dearer to Zeus than Ares is. Zeus is very proud of Artemis as well. As he himself puts it, he doesn't mind facing Hera's wrath for children like her.
But the continued hatred even after the birth of the twins (like sending Tityus to rape Leto) could have been for different reasons. This wasn't like one of those affairs Zeus would have with mortal women where he'd leave them behind once the child is conceived. Neither could Hera, despite her many attempts, get rid of Leto like she did with the other lovers. Not only did Leto give Zeus children that he loves dearly, she also stayed on Olympus despite Hera's hatred towards her (which isn't directed to any of Zeus' other divine mistresses, btw). It might have also been because Leto herself is dear to Zeus, if the way she's treated on Olympus is any proof. In the Homeric hymn to Apollo, Leto stands next to Zeus - in the Olympian assembly - to welcome their son. Hera is completely absent from the scene, as if Leto had taken her place even if temporarily. Now you could say this is because Apollo himself is such a powerful and glorious son in a way that no other son of Zeus is, so of course Leto would get such an honor (the hymn itself presents it this way).
But here's another instance - in the Iliad, when Hera goes to seduce Zeus, he is obviously very smitten but before getting into the action, he lists some of his lovers (I believe these were his favorite lovers, as a lot of others are not mentioned):
"for never has such desire for goddess or mortal woman so gripped and overwhelmed my heart, not even when I was seized by love for Ixionā€™s wife, who gave birth to Peirithous the godsā€™ rival in wisdom; or for Acrisiusā€™ daughter, slim-ankled Danaļæ½ļæ½, who bore Perseus, greatest of warriors; or for the far-famed daughter of Phoenix, who gave me Minos and godlike Rhadamanthus; or for Semele mother of Dionysus, who brings men joy; or for Alcmene at Thebes, whose son was lion-hearted Heracles; or for Demeter of the lovely tresses; or for glorious Leto; or even for you yourself, as this love and sweet desire for you grips me now.ā€™ (Book 14, trans. A. T. Murray)
Notice how when talking about most of them, he also mentions the children they bore to him but when Demeter and Leto are mentioned, he doesn't bring up their children at all despite them being some of the most accomplished kids of his. What's more, he takes Leto's name just before Hera's. I mean, this is an interpretation but it looks like not only did Zeus love Leto the most out of all his mistresses - giving her a place second to that of his wife, but also his love for her wasn't necessarily only because she gave him two amazing children.
Nonnus does something similar in the Dionysiaca (but this time Zeus is enamored with Persephone instead of Hera) but more notably, when Typhoeus attacks Olympus and Zeus is discouraged, Nike takes the form of Leto to encourage him and it's pretty telling of what Leto meant to Zeus.
One interesting similarity between Hera and Leto is that they both had a giant try to rape them. Porphyrion tried to violate Hera (Zeus inspired him to do this) and Tityus tried to violate Leto (upon Hera's order). Though both of them were killed, only Tityus got an eternal punishment in Tartarus of having his liver/heart eaten out by vultures so Zeus seems to have taken a greater offense at Tityus trying to assault Leto.
Again, I don't think Zeus would ever take anyone other than Hera as his permanent wife - she is irreplaceable to him. There's an entire myth about Hera leaving him and Zeus winning her back. Their relationship is obviously complex and involves all kinds of emotions including love and hate. But Leto is continually dear to him as well and that's something Hera can't do much about.
#Zeus#Hera#Leto#if you think about it Leto is like the opposite of Hera#she is a great mother#she bore children that Zeus is actually proud of#she never rebels and even begs for forgiveness when her son rebels against Zeus#she's generally mild natured and never lashes out#also if you look into this obscure myth of how Hera established an altar in the name of Leto#because Leto's name was used to cover up the secret relationship between Zeus and Hera#(which kinda sorta implies that Zeus was *maybe* courting or even married to Leto at that time)#it all gets even more complicated for both Hera and Leto#ALSO in the texts that record the syncretism bw Greek and Egyptian gods#Some authors make Hera the mother of Apollo#and Leto was Apollo's nurse#Those texts also mention that this Apollo defeated Typhoeus and became the king of Egypt#So he was like the ideal son of Zeus and Hera#And it's so interesting to me#how this Apollo - the perfect son of Hera - transitioned into a sort of rival figure to Hera in the greek myths#and Typhoeus who was defeated by Hera's son became the son of Hera in the Greek myths#on a different note#to this day I can't understand why Zeus would inspire Porphyrion to do such a thing#was it to get back at Hera for the Tityus incindent?#I shall headcanon it that way (even though I prefer to ignore this version)#well of course not that Zeus would have ever let Porphyrion actually have his way with Hera regardless of the reason#but yeah that was such move and it's wild that the mythographer didn't tell us that reason behind Zeus' action#I've also seen people hc that it was because Zeus wanted Heracles to save Hera so that she's accept him finally#which is also an interesting explanation#especially if you consider that Heracles was also given Hera's breast milk (without her consent)#anyway that's enough rambling ig

I know this has already been said and Iā€™m super late, but Mia as the protag of RE8 would have been so good. The contrast between Mia, the Lords, and Mother Miranda would have been absolutely interesting. I'm shoving everything under a read more because damn I have so many thoughts about Mia.
Lady Dimitrescu is a woman that cannibalizes and drinks the blood of her servants and intruders. On top of that, she tortures before preying on them. She does this willingly and very much derives pleasure from doing so. Lady Dā€™s gothic triplets hunt any poor fool that wanders in. Itā€™s a fun family activity for them just as much as itā€™s for sustenance.Ā
Do you know what this parallels? The Baker family under Evelineā€™s control. They patrol the estate and anyone who rejects the ā€œgiftā€ either ends up molded or on the dinner table. This family also partakes in a fucked up version of a family dinner, eating the victims that refused their little girlā€™s ā€œgift.ā€Ā
However, a major difference between the Baker and Dimitrescu family is their willingness to participate in these activities. A family of cannibals; one forced while the other relishes in it.Ā
Mia is still very traumatized by her three years in the Bakerā€™s estate. Breaking into the castle to find her daughter would force her back. Hello to all the emotions that come with those memories, the ones Mia has been trying to forget. The harder you try to forget something, the more you think about it. What better way to make Mia acknowledge Dulvey, Louisiana than by forcing her into something so similar?Ā
And while sheā€™s still reeling from remembering her time in captivity, why not push her a bit further down memory lane with House Beneviento? Mia has demonstrated at multiple points in RE7 that she does care about other lives. She lies to Ethan to keep him from getting caught up in her work. She tries to save Alan and crew members of "The Annabelle" (the crew members are a bit more indirect, she mainly focused on Alan) by containing Eveline. After Jack finds her, Mia keeps her distance to keep from infecting them while trying to write a warning. She tries her hardest during RE7 to save Ethan.Ā
Miaā€™s hallucinations could center on her guilt. The failure to stop Eveline and the lives ruined as a result. How she was always too late to help anyone. Ethan curing her, a criminal, over Zoe, the person helping him. Leaving Zoe behind in the shattered remains of her home and family. Surviving. Visions of Ethan hinting at his ā€œconditionā€ could lure her to the manor. A little nudge to the whole ā€œhe was mold the entire timeā€ plot twist without fully giving it away.Ā
Moreau, lacking in self worth and very attached to a woman who doesnā€™t give him the time a day, yet still he considers her as his mother. Most of his actions are for the attention and validation from his ā€œmother.ā€ No matter what Moreau does, heā€™ll never have her affection or time. Itā€™s sad, isnā€™t it? To witness a man try so hard only to be rejected. And isnā€™t that familiar? Mia once felt compassion for someone with similar traits.Ā
Remember the little girl who considered you her mother? The one that spent three years waiting for you to love her after you promised? The one you had a hand in killing? What makes you think you could ever be a good mother after what you did? Why are you trying so hard to save Rose when you didnā€™t even extend the same courtesy to Eveline?
Yā€™all know how Miaā€™s past is a mystery? Like why she was working for the Connections and how she was even recruited and all that. Heisenberg would be a great way to explore it. A man taken, forced into becoming something else, and stuck in a family he doesnā€™t want. Mia can relate. He wants to use her daughter as a weapon. She was willing to let another child be used as a weapon. Theyā€™re alike, so surely Mia would be willing to side with him.
But Heisenberg is cocky and Mia isnā€™t the person she was prior/during 7. Even if she was on board with using Eveline as a weapon to end all wars or whatever bullshit the Connections told her, sheā€™s not willing now. Not after what sheā€™s seen and been through. This section could be Heisenberg goading her through the tvs/intercoms about her past to change her mind with Mia remaining steadfast in her refusal.
And then thereā€™s Mother Miranda. Two mothers trying to get their daughters back through vastly different means. Because of the group photo showing Mia and Miranda with Eveline this encounter can go one of two ways.Ā
Miranda and Mia know each other and have worked together before. Whether it be on the E-Series Project (with Mia becoming the caretaker and spending copious amounts of time at the lab) or though some other means at work.Ā
Theyā€™ve only briefly met when the Connections were in a hurry to transport Eveline.
Either way, Miranda would compare them. As a mother, Mia must understand what sheā€™s trying to accomplish. Would Mia not do the same as she? Maybe at this point Miranda shows she killed Ethan to demoralize to prevent her from interfering with the ceremony. Tells her sheā€™s too late once again and to give Rose to her because sheā€™ll be the superior mother.
Idk, I guess you could switch to Ethan instead of Chris so he can still have Eveline tell him heā€™s moldy. But heā€™s a stubborn man and he forces himself back to weaken Miranda so Mia can kill her. Chris shows up and Ethan does the same thing he did at the end by blowing himself up with Chris forcing Mia (with Rose) on the helicopter. That way the Shadow of Rose DLC can still be about Rose and Ethan.Ā
TLDR; Mia should have been the protagonist because it would have allowed us to explore her character and background more. It was a missed opportunity especially since so much of RE8 centers around mothers. It would have played out better as closing off the Winters Family saga as well since we could have tied the loose ends that came with Miaā€™s mysterious past.

Iā€™ve convinced myself Will, Katherine, and Elizabeth all had different fathers and tangentially Iā€™ve convinced myself of why.
Eleanor, with her sister dead, knows sheā€™s the last of the Blood of the Lady and knows itā€™s her duty to bear new Blood to continue the fight, especially with Simon so close on her heels. So she decides itā€™s time for a classic one night stand, no need to get attached to man who could never understand her circumstances. And success sheā€™s pregnant and can continue her line!
But oh no. Something is not right about this pregnancy, Will himself speculates that it could have been unnatural in some way. Something gives it away. Eleanor knew who Will was going to be before he was born, tried to end her pregnancy too late, and then tried to kill him but failed because, well, heā€™s hers, he came from her and now that heā€™s a real baby in the real world and she didnā€™t birth a two headed, five handed demon, she canā€™t bring herself to kill a baby. Cause thatā€™s what he is. Not a demon, not a king, a child. And so she ended up raising him.
But okay, sheā€™s 99.99999% sure she just gave birth to the equivalent of the antichrist, and even though she canā€™t kill him she still wants to be able to thwart him in the theoretical future. So she gets cracking on baby number 2 with a new man this time, itā€™s not like she wouldā€™ve been able to find the first one if she tried. What are the odds that a person can give birth to the antichrist twice? Minimal, since heā€™s already here alive and well.
This second time goes smoothly, fantastically, much better than the birth/exorcism/ancient ritual that was the first one. And in Eleanorā€™s arms rests a normal baby girl, and she can relax about giving birth to two antichrists.
Some fuzzing in the years between but Katherine has been sent away and she decides she needs another kid. And why wouldnā€™t she? Her own sister got killed, so what if something, god forbid, ever happened to Katherine? There would be no one to carry the line, no one to stop the Dark King, who is currently sat on the living room floor making the paper figurines he drew fight each other. Sheā€™ll need to burn those later.
And so comes man number three. Itā€™s been strange and lonely and paranoia inducing to be a single mother on the run, but sheā€™s in wayyy to deep to bring another person into this mess. And with man number three comes child 3. And once again, thereā€™s no dark omens, no stretching shadows, no horrifying pregnancy scares, just a normal baby girl once again. Success. 2/3 ainā€™t bad on ā€œdid you give birth to The Dark Kingā€ odds.
And Will, so young, so curious, just wants to take a look, wants to understand, wants to feel connected to who he rightfully assumes will be joining their strange, paranoid little family, but as soon as he gets close heā€™s ripped away from Elizabeth. Eleanor is afraid he will taint her in some way, maybe even kill her. Heā€™s never done anything like that, but she canā€™t trust him. Thereā€™s something in his eyes she canā€™t trust, no matter how young or innocent.
