Ok so I spent all night yesterday thinking about this cause I didn’t really have one before this ask

To begin, PJ has Ink’s vitiligo, face shape, nose, smile and natural hair colour (light beige). On Error’s side, she has his yellow teeth, dark skin and (somewhat) thick eyebrows. No, the yellow teeth can’t go away

They have alopecia, a buzz cut and generally dyes their remaining hair magenta, cyan and yellow. For those who don’t know, alopecia is a disease that causes hair loss. I include it to reference his missing head part in his original design. They also wear piercings such as: a nose piercing, helix and lobe.

-I based this Victor HEAVILY off of the Gotham version, because that's the only Batman media where I've seen it be interesting at all. He is a killer (hehe) assassin and all-around weird guy

-Also as you can see I have changed up Pyg a LOT too. She's a gal now because I'm a sucker for fucked up women. She definitely didn't kill her family and her apron is definitely not human leather I promise you can come close to her I swear

-If you've ever seen Gotham, that one thing that Victor does to Butch is basically what Pyg does to people. She "reprograms" them, or at the very least tortures the hell out of them so they learn their lessons (or until they die). Oz kind of lets her run free as long as she deals with whichever person he sends her way and doesn't get too crazy

-Pyg's name is shortened to just Pyg in this version, not Professor Pyg. She has really no license to dig around in people. Her name was just a mean nickname given to her by the press/other criminals when she started out, because everyone thought she was dumb and piggish. Much like Oz, though, she made it her brand. (Also, Pyg's real name is Leslie Valentine :] )

I haven't reached my goal yet for her surgery, ^ ^; While she is doing fine I can't say she's doing 'better' either. Im still looking for a job + trying to make money on the side but it's very difficult.

as of currently we can no longer touch her finger without it causing her to cry and scream(or yelp VERY loudly) in pain as the tumor itself has mainly eaten away and pushed the nail out further and further from its original position. We keep it clean and trimmed as best we can, but even then it starts bleeding at times. She's able to run/walk/hop and has plenty of energy as she normally is, but she's still in great pain :c I would show a picture of how it looks but I fear it may be too graphic for tumblr to handle. That's now bad it is :(

A while ago I made a post about Share A Smile Becky, the first Barbie-line doll to be depicted as using a wheelchair, as well as some other Barbies with disabilities in the line-up - specifically mentioning a variety of Barbies and Kens in wheelchairs, with prosthetic limbs, and with vitiligo.

Since I made that post, Mattel launched the first Barbie doll depicted with Down Syndrome.

This Barbie was released in collaboration with NDSS, and features a head sculpt with features common among people with Down Syndrome, and is wearing leg braces.

I thought I might take the time to talk about some other Barbies who are depicted as having disabilities or using mobility aids, medical devices or assistive technologies.

For example, there is a Chelsea (Barbie's little sister!) who has a back brace to wear for scoliosis.

There is at least one Barbie in the Fashionistas line depicted with hearing aids!

As well as one who does not have hair on her head. It is not specified for what reason this Barbie has no hair - she could have alopecia, have recently undergone chemotherapy, or maybe she just rocks the bald look.

There is still a long way to go, of course. For example, to my knowledge to date there are no Barbies with canes or walkers. However I think it's good steps in the right direction.

hello again! I'm making an au of a show and I wanted to give most of the characters some disability/disorder/condition.

One character had hair loss (not much and it was magically healed) in the show and I wanted to give her actual hair loss, however she wears a hijab and I was wondering if it was like the mask trope for people with facial differences since she'd always go out with her head covered.

And the other character can see other people's dreams and I was thinking of giving him narcolepsy, but is it insensitive given his magic(?) when awake?

I personally would never count religious garnements as evoking this trope, I think it's perfectly fine. "Hijabi dealing with hair loss" is a description that fits a lot of people! I have no issue with this and think it's quite cool.

There's also the fact that people who wear a hijab still take it off at home, so presumably she will be described without it at some point. But you can mention her lack of hair when she's out as well - maybe her friend who also wears a hijab struggles with a strand of hair poking out, and she jokes about not having to deal with that anymore.

Of course it depends on what kind of relationship she has with her facial difference, but a lot of people who had theirs for a long time will reference it in a very casual way. Just a once-in-a-while reminder that "yeah it's still there".

If you want to be Extra Safe™, you can consider a type of alopecia that affects the eyebrows and eyelashes as well (alopecia universalis), which would make it visible at all times. You can also have another character with alopecia who has it more visible, things like that.

Re: narcolepsy: It doesn't seem inherently offensive or insensitive to me. (For context, doctors suspected narcolepsy with me, now no one is sure, it's up in the air, but not official. My body is a mystery.)

For starters, I can name exactly 3 characters with narcolepsy, and 2 are from the same book series. Mysterious Benedict Society, first published 2008, has 2 characters with narcolepsy, which is portrayed sort of okay. And there's one character in The Boys, who was made narcoleptic because his actor often napped on set. My friend, who has narcolepsy, said the only rep he has seen is a one-off episode of Scrubs where the gag is that the narcoleptic has cataplexy when he sees tits, and no other time. As you can imagine, that's definitely not any sort of respectful representation. And he said maybe the Unconscious Argentinean from Moulin Rouge, but again, just sort of vague.

Essentially, there's very little to be found in terms of tropes in the first place, so it's not like you're following any harmful tropes.

As to the power, it seems like while it's connected to narcolepsy, it doesn't necessarily hinge entirely on it. And, more importantly, it doesn't erase the character's disability. That's really the main thing to avoid when it comes to giving disabled characters superpowers.

This is also a power that someone without narcolepsy have, but it's not jumping out as something insensitive.

As a side note, really vivid dreams can be a symptom of narcolepsy. If you want to give him this symptom, maybe this can play a part in the discovery of his powers, or in him not realizing immediately that they are powers.
