@averagecygnet-blog i accidentally deleted your ask about my opinion on the themes in Black Friday 😶 sorry bout that anywhere here’s my thoughts.

So like first of all, like you’ve already said, the critique of consumerism is incredibly heavy handed. You are right. It is not at all subtle. We’ve all heard Made in America. But I really don’t think it was possible to tell this story and have it be subtle; this was always going to be an incredibly overt anti-capitalist message.

Starting with the real life inspirations of the premise, the “Tickle-Me Wiggly” is already a direct reference to “Tickle-Me Elmo,” which was a toy that inspired real life riots ending in at least a handful of injuries and arrests. In the scene right after the Wiggly Jingle, Paul and Emma discuss Cabbage Patch Kids. The Cabbage Patch riots have their own wiki page. The idea of parents literally resorting to violence over toys on Black Friday is something that already happens. So this musical is really just looking at those events, saying, “Wow, capitalism sure makes people behave badly,” and then pushing that concept to its most exaggerated form. The fact that it isn’t subtle is not a bug, it’s a feature.

I also see people bring up this theme almost entirely in relation to the song Made in America rather than connecting it to almost every scene. As if this isn’t a show that doesn’t begin with an advertisement. The opening number is an ad.

(Apparently an effective one, considering how quickly Starkid sells out of the Lord in Black dolls whenever they sell them. People literally watched a whole musical about how the doll represents using the product of capitalism to distract from societal problems and then went and bought the doll. And I would have, too, if I had the money. But I think about the irony.)

I'm not going to go through every scene and the capitalist imagery in it, mostly because I don't actually have anything particularly unique to say about it. Like most of them are fairly self-explanatory and I'm not particularly good at analysis. But do want to specifically bring up the lyrics of "Our Doors Are Open" since they usually get overshadowed by people talking about how much cunt Corey served (it's a lot of cunt. Record amounts of cunt served), because the entire song is both satirical and foreshadowing. Also the bridge of "First of Famine" and the dehumanization of the worker, etc. etc.

I'm also fascinated by the social dynamics in Black Friday. Lex is basically raising her sister due to their mother's neglect; Tom is a single dad; Becky is a domestic abuse survivor; and while Linda's family externally looks very well-put together, she's had multiple affairs, and it's revealed in the Nightmare Time episode "Honey Queen" that she blatantly plays favorites with her kids and has a terrible relationship with her father. Lex is a poor retail worker, Tom and Becky are middle class, and Linda is very wealthy. Black Friday more than any other Starkid show acknowledges the implications of social class, I think. I wonder if part of why a lot of people don't like it is because it's not really escapism the way a lot of other musicals are; it's pretty clear about dealing with real life problems, in a very simplified but obvious way.

I think all the time about the scene where Linda tells Becky, in front of a crowd, that everyone knew her husband was abusive and chose to stay silent. It's such an important moment because it's directly showing the audience just how cruel Linda is. It had been implied before but this was on another level. And it also serves as, again, a pretty basic depiction of how society treats victims. Like, saying that "bystanders will always look away as long as there's plausible deniability to preserve their own comfort" is pretty simple, but that doesn't mean it's a bad point to make, and I think it's made well. The title song also has the lines "I don't want your half-baked sympathy, / When did it save those in need?" which reinforces a similar concept; expressing pity isn't the same as actually taking any kind of action.

And then, of course, there is all the religious imagery. Every time I watch this show I notice more of it, it's everywhere and it's so cool. The show takes place during the holiday season so there are a lot of references to Christmas, specifically. Wiggly keeps saying it will be his birthday, and Linda will "birth" him, so they are tied to Jesus and the Virgin Mary, symbolically (While writing this I had the thought that Wiley possibly counts as the angel Gabriel, then). And I think that using Christmas works because of how commercial Christmas in the US is. If your eldrith god is using capitalist desires as a recruiting tactic, having him bastardize Christmas for his own purposes is a pretty logical step I think. It's also not just that Wiggly is associated with Christmas thematically but also in a sense the iconography of the holiday becomes Wiggly. The garlands on the balcony turning into Wiggly's tentacles is one of the greatest set design pieces I've ever seen. Even apart from the functionality of it as a low-cost set that can go unnoticed until it's needed, it so perfectly evokes the imagery of Wiggly literally corrupting the holiday imagery. The first time I saw that scene I was amazed. I don't feel like checking rn who did the set design for Black Friday but whoever they are, they're fucking incredible. No notes.

And then the music. This is by far my favorite Starkid score overall. I love it so much. Partially because I, known 80's pop-rock enjoyer, am obsessed with a good synthesizer, but also just because of how well the songs suit this particular story. The synths are used most in the songs that show Wiggly's influence (Feast or Famine, Adore Me, Wiggle). Is "non-traditional instruments represent the unknown and otherworldly" the most unique special concept ever? No. But I like it and it sounds cool so like idc.

Jeff Blim is an incredible songwriter who is so talented in so many genres, and I'm always impressed with the songs he writes for Hatchetfield. I think sometimes we don't appreciate enough that all of these songs are by one guy (also Matt Dahan's musical direction for the entire series and the underscoring for both seasons of Nightmare Time that works in the melodies of previously used songs so incredibly). All of the Nightmare Time songs are so different, and all three of the stage shows have a very distinctive sound that really makes sense with the story that's being told. And one of the things Jeff does best in my opinion is the use of repeated melodies and leitmotifs.

Hatchetfield is full of them. There's been a lot of discussion of it in Nerdy Prudes because that show has so many motifs (i.e. the Nightmare Time riff, the "I'm not a loser" melody), and one of them actually comes from Black Friday. In The Summoning, right after Wiggly says "fwendy-wends," the keyboard melody that plays is the same as the part in the song Wiggle that goes "We will build a portal just for [when he comes]" (The last few notes fade directly into the chorus of The Summoning). I'm not the first person to notice this or anything but I thought it was so cool when it happened.

And Wiggle itself is using a different melody: The Carol of the Bells. Again, it ties into the idea of Wiggly completely taking over the idea of the Christmas season. The lyrics of Wiggle also include the lines "He will rise up with joyful noise," and I didn't realize that not everyone would catch that as a religious reference until a friend commented about it but "joyful noise" is a biblical reference (Psalm 100:1). It all ties back to the religious themes.

This last one may not be intentional, but the last song also really makes me think of another Christmas carol? The opening lyrics of What If Tomorrow Comes ("Do you all see what I see, / What I know, / What I see?") really reminds me of the song "Do You All Hear What I Hear?" The melody is different and only vaguely similar so I may be reading too far into it, but I always got the feeling that I'd heard something like that before and wasn't able to place it until last year.

Anyway TLDR Black Friday is heavy handed but I think it actually works better that way, and I like how strong the imagery throughout it is.

Excluding space babies, there are a handful of episodes that, stand-alone, are really good. Of course, there'd never be more than a handful because the international franchise pairing with corporate overlords only had time for 9 episodes apparently.

In fact, I like most of the season, considering I don't watch them as a season. Church on Ruby Road was interesting, playing with the idea of magic and the Timeless Child arc.

The Devil's Chord was fun and intriguing, playing with the gods and monsters idea again, and having cool 4th wall breaks and a fun villain. Its drawbacks were the stupid fucking musical number that rtd wrote with no canon reason other than "Maestro's influence", which is a repeat of what he did with the 60th (writing utter bullshit and pinning it on a stupid fucking cause that makes 0 canon sense).

Boom was incredible. For starters, it was written by someone who wasn't rtd, so that's amazing. Also, as a theatre kid, having tur central actor unable to move their body for the entire performance tickled my brain in all the best ways. All in all, it felt like an episode from 12's era, when Doctor was at its peak for me. Great episode. Made me hopeful for the future (hahahaha😶)

73 Yards was also incredible (ignoring the finale). It heightened that (false) sense of mystery surrounding Ruby, and ramped up the horror subtheme started by Wild Blue Yonder. I really enjoyed it, and it was a great story. Felt a lot like Heaven Sent, which is am achievement (All of this praise is for the standalone. RTD pissed all over his good writing with the finale, and 73 Yards was ruined by EoD).

Dot and Bubble played with some interesting ideas but was kinda meh. It was a cool reality to see 15 suffer racism (bit like 13 suffering misogyny), and it was good to see the Doctor mad again.

Rogue was very cool, and I thought it was great. Made me wish we had a Thasmin kiss tho.

Legend of Ruby Sunday, aka the good half of the finale, was very interesting. All the mystery and the magic and the reunions. They dismissed the whole bigeneration plot line, and the fact that 15 didn't see any of this shit coming meant that the bigeneration plot line was completely fucked. 14 and 15 aren't the same person in a looped time line. They're just clones of each other. The whole "therapy" situation is utter bullshit. RTD just can't kill t*nnant for shit (fr love David Tennant in other stuff and as a person in general just getting sick of him in Dr who). Sutekh's reveal could have been handled a bit better, but overall his entrance gave me chills. Loved that. Just needed a bit more detail on how he avoided the TARDIS sensors for two thousand years.

And finally, the episode that untied all the others from each other, Empire of Death. The mystery that terrified Maestro, the God of music and revels, and caught the obsession of Sutekh, the God of death and eternity, was utter bullshit. Ruby's mum is just some guy. A nice thought- we thought she was some godlike entity but she was just an ordinary human. Except. We didn't think that. RTD wrote that. The snow, the "song in her soul", the fact that Ruby's mum couldn't be perceived with anything but the naked eye, not even with Time Lord equipment- that's all superhuman shit. You can't explain that away with "she's normal". That's not how it works. Oh and the God of literal actual Death was defeated by a real good dogleash? Nah man. If you want us to take things seriously, don't pull shit like that. Also they defeated him literally the same way they did last time, adding the aforementioned dog leash. Also the fact that her mum is just normal means that the whole mystery about the specter's words in 73 yards is just... pointless? Completely useless?

Also, no one names their daughter by pointing at a sign (that wasn't there in the original shot).

And Ruby's exit was so nothing. I didn't feel a single thing. There was no emotional connection to the character. She left of her own directive. After 9 45minute episodes. Don't know if people honestly were emotional about that, because there was nothing there.

Overall, good episodes. Bad season.

maybe you gave up playing properly hours ago, sipping on your drink, far too entertained watching them bicker. maybe you roll casually and the number would be on the last card tan needs to complete his set. he'd ask you not to buy it, saying he'll give you all his other cards AND money, "I will give you my strand and my last 50 quid, just please don't buy it,"

you'll be nice and leave it until lem comes around and snatches it up, snickering as he sets his cash down to pay. he'll be like, "come on mate, it's just a game," only he's winning and dominating the board

it would end with you playing on your phone, tapped out the game as they continue fighting. new rules would be added after every turn and tan would be in heaps of debt - constantly borrowing money from the bank to give to lem when he lands on his properties

tan would still be convinced he can win, and lem would just be entertaining it.. until hours go by, and lem decides to call a truce, offering a rematch next week

maybe it ends in a game of uno at the coffee table to rewind - only it's the same story again, ruthlessly slapping +4 on top of +4. he'd end up with half the deck of cards. BUT he'd give you all a run for your money for casino games though

I think he'd be a great uncle while simultaneously being an awful brother !! he'd let his niece do things she wanted, knowing that lem wouldn't be happy. she wants to eat ice cream before dinner? two scoops won't hurt. she wants to go to the toy shop and get even more toys? no problem, uncle tan has his cards at the ready. she wants to watch tv before bed? one episode is okay surely

tho he won't always go over his brother's head, bc he respects him - but sometimes he just can't help it, he loves to spoil

he'd begrudgingly let her do his makeup. she'd be bossy, making him sit and be quiet as she brushes on purple eye shadow and crazy amounts of blush. she'd also want him to join in with her tea party, or play make-believe/ princesses with her, he'd have no choice but to play along and smile while wearing the tiara

like lem, I feel like she'd be very loud and quite full-on, so when there's finally a moment of silence, he savours it. she'd probably knock herself out from all playing and would just curl up at his side

towards the end of babysitting, tan would probs make her super hyper just to annoy lem tehe. maybe pump her full of sugar or spin her around for ages

A/N: This wasn’t really a request but it gave me a couple of ideas that I wanted to work through so here it is, there will be this part and I think one more after this then the story is done.

*Part 2*

Chuya had been tracking the group that had attempted to kill (Y/M/N), something about it being a small group across seas bothered him, the information that Dazai had given him was not wrong he knew that, but there was something else lurking below the surface and it had something to do with you.

It only took a few days for him to realise that if he wanted to find out anything more he’d have to go and find the group himself, there wasn’t any members left in the city, they had all gone home by now. The info packet that Dazai had given him showed that they were based in Europe. Chuya left you with a subordinate that already had kids. She was happy to add you to her home for a couple of weeks while Chuya dealt with them, he’d add a little extra to her pay once he was done.

“Where are you going without your little shadow?” Dazai asked, leaning against the wall outside his apartment block. “I need to find the group that started all this, I don’t think they’re done.” Chuya answered. “Why do you think that?” Dazai asked. “It’s just strange that they would know about your weretiger across the sea. Surely there’s a weapon closer to home that they can use if they just wanted to get on the map in their own country.” Chuya explained. “I figured I should just ask them.” “That would be fun.” Dazai smirked as he kicked off the wall. “I think the Dark Twins should come back if only for her.” “You won’t be able to get a flight that quickly and I won’t be waiting for you.” Chuya grumbled. “Don’t worry I’ll meet you there.” He smirked as Chuya rolled his eyes climbing into his car and heading to the airport.

“How the hell did you get here before me!?” Chuya asked as he exited the airport in London. “I told you I could get here and I meant it.” Dazai answered “the group that we are looking for work in and around East London it should be easy to find them considering they aren’t expecting us to be here.” “How do you know all of that?” Chuya asked. “I’ve been looking into them since, I found out that they wanted Atsushi, I have to protect my own interests too.” Dazai explained. “So that’s why you're here, to protect the weretiger?” Chuya asked. “Chuya don’t forget, she was my friend too, I want to protect Atsushi but I will avenge her too.” Dazai answered as he led him to a car. “I assume that you still don’t know how to drive.” Chuya muttered. “Guilty.” He laughed scratching the back of his head.

Chuya honestly doesn’t know how they made it in one piece with Dazai’s last minute direction changes and the busy roads. Eventually they got to a club, music pumping out the door, you could feel the base in the floor. “There’s no point in trying to use the door, they aren’t going to let us in.” Chuya muttered. “You're right, you looked like a teen trying to be an adult, the hat only makes it worse.” Dazai explained. “Shut up.” Chuya muttered through gritted teeth “There’s probably an entrance around the back that we can use.” They both walked around the back, the alley leading behind the club was crowded and it wasn’t long before they realised that the gang they were looking for was right there. “Hey kid you know what you wandered into?” One of them asked. “I think they’re talking to you, Chuya.” Dazai teased as he pushed his hands into his pockets. “Did you just call me kid?” Chuya asked. “Are you implying that you're not?” He asked. “I’m 22 years old.” Chuya answered, his hands still firmly in his pockets “we just want to get into the bar.” “Then use the front door.” He ordered. “Don’t think your boss will let us through the front door.” Dazai shrugged. “Surely he’s informed you of the people that he’s decided to mess with.” “Mess with?” The thug asked, finally taking the time to look at them both, it seemed that Chuya’s uniform struck a nerve with him. “Keep them busy while I get the boss.” Chuya watched as the man disappeared into the building, the first male to step forward attempted to hit him but it didn’t land instead he dodged out of the way kicking him in chin, he was vaguely aware of someone moving behind him so he moved away from the male as he dropped turning to face the other man. “Why aren’t they using guns?” Chuya asked. “Guns aren’t common here and using them will just cause a panic, the police will be here before anything can be solved.” Dazai answered. “Makes sense.” Chuya nodded. “It does, doesn’t it, you Port Mafia folk are all so loud.” A new voice said, taking Chuya’s attention from the male that had stepped back now. “So what are you doing here?”

“I’m here to talk to you about a woman that you or your people attacked in Yokohama.” Chuya explained. “Not my fault that someone paid good money to have her killed.” He shrugged. “What about her daughter, you injured her mother, she would have died if you killed the daughter, why leave the kid alive?” Chuya asked. “They wanted her, they said they’d collect her after we left.” The man shrugged “and as payment they would hand over the weretiger.” “Let me guess they haven’t paid up.” Dazai said “whoever spoke to you never had the weretiger, he’s under the protection of my organisation the ADA.” “What!?” He asked. “Now you’ve made two very powerful enemies.” Dazai shrugged. “So tell me who hired you.” “They never gave a name, they were an organisation in Japan. They said that they would be able to get me anything that I wanted.” “Well they lied, the only thing that they got you was a death sentence.” Chuya said through gritted teeth as he looked at the man. “Nothing else that might save your life?” Dazai asked. “We’ve been looking into them ourselves, they didn’t expect us to have anyone that could track them, but we have a pretty good hacker on the payroll, she found that the messages tracked back to a government facility, one that was supposed to be a secret, it’s based in Yokohama, that was why we took the deal we figured as government officials they could deliver.” He explained. “You made one mistake, which was believing the government is the strongest power in that city. If they were, they wouldn’t need you.” Dazai smirked. “Now Chuya I think that's all they can offer us, do as you please.” “Don’t tell me what to do.” Chuya growled as he got to work.

When the police did get there notified of an explosion, they found that the club itself was unharmed but the back alley was destroyed with a gang they had been looking to take down themselves in various stages dead or dying. There was no indication to what had happened there only the craters that covered the floor where the gang members all laid.

1. Who is your favourite character in 2?

I feel slightly like I’ll get lynched for picking a favourite, but - Crowley. Hands down. Not just for the DT factor, although I’m sure it contributes. I just really love everything about how his character is presented in the TV show, from all his performative showing off to the very obvious insecurities and nerves he’s trying to cover up at any given moment, I think he’s lovely. I want to wrap him in a blanket and give him tea. Which is very Aziraphale-coded of me.

2. Who is your least favourite character in 1?

Uhh… that’s a vast sea of characters you’re asking me to pick from. I can’t pick villains, cuz let’s face it my very favourite is the most villain. If I restrict myself to main companions, I guess… Yaz? I know that will be an unpopular opinion, I just don’t think she was super compelling as a character, and her relationship with the Doctor felt very anticlimactic to me, so as a companion she just fell flat for me.

3. What’s your favourite episode of 4?

I’m trying to pick… Either episode 2, because of the scene where Carlisle and Natalie go on the date in the drag club (because, unironically, I remember getting actual butterflies at how romantic I thought it was), or the final episode 6,  watching Carlisle throw caution to the wind and fully come into his own as utter manipulative bastard to get what he wants. Actually, yeah, that one.

4. What is your favourite season of 5?

Because I tend to watch them all in one big chunk, I’m struggling to remember what even happens in separate seasons. I really liked Hugh in it, so either Season 1 or 2.

5. What’s your favourite relationship in 3?

Sam and Gene. Easy one! 😄 I don’t even care if it’s platonic or romantic, I think they had amazing chemistry that clashed against each other constantly and made it so compelling to watch. I love that they very genuinely irritate the life out of each other and just as reluctantly like each other.

6. Who is your anti relationship in 2?

Think I’m going to have to steal an answer here, but Newt and Anathema because I also don’t like the ‘prophesy said so I guess’ foundation of it. It didn’t bother me massively as a pairing, I just wasn’t very interested in it.

7. How long have you watched 1?

Casually since I was 15 and it started coming out again in 2005. I’ve watched every new series with my mum, but only joined the fandom (got obsessive) around 2019.

8. How did you become interested in 3?

John Simm. That’s the whole answer. My joining the Doctor Who fandom led to TenSimm shipping, and from there stalking the filmography of both David Tennant and John Simm as truly excellent actors. I watched a lot of shows I’d missed out on previously from them both during the downtime of the pandemic, Life on Mars was an enduring favourite.

Difficult. In terms of raw numbers, I’ve rewatched TTOI more than any of them, I used to play the four seasons on literal repeat for days. Good Omens makes me giddier than anything I’ve ever watched. But in terms of longevity of interest, I’d have to say DW.

I’m gonna be basic and still think about the Doctor/Master pairing, but if we’re talking unusual iterations of it… Spymaster and Ten just absolutely outdoing each other in the needy olympics would be fascinating. Thirteen and Missy is a close second. Missy would so appreciate Thirteen’s barely-contained feral vibes. She’d wanna keep her on a leash, it’d be great.

Ooooh that’s so difficult. I love TTOI for the insane improv skills of Capaldi and the rest of the cast, but in terms of raw chemistry it’s gotta be LoM.

Why did you develop Jon's backstory the way you did?

I will avoid spoilers because his full story hasn't been revealed yet.

I always had the question when watching the show "why was Jon the best adult for Shawn?"

If you think about it, it doesn't make sense. Out of all the adults we see on the show, Jon has the least amount of experience with kids and no support to take on a troubled teen and his needs.

It was implied on the show that despite his wealthy upbringing, Jon had a personal understanding of the road Shawn was heading down. Then based on what Eli told Shawn about Jon and his family, there is a long-term estrangement between him and his parents. At the very least, Jon would understand to an extent the feeling of parental abandonment Shawn struggles with.

But still what was it that made Jon the right one for Shawn?

My answer: because he lived a parallel life to Shawn when he was a teen and got into much worse trouble that Shawn ever did. Had Jon not had an adult in his life who saw his struggle and intervened, his life would have been gone down a very dark path.

The last thing he wants is for Shawn to go through that. Not when he can intervene and stop that downward slide before it happens by following the example his mentor set.
